¹ [A Song of Ascents.] Out of the depths I have cried to you, LORD.

⁴ The waves of death surrounded me, and the currents of ungodliness overwhelmed me. ⁵ The cords of Sheol were around me. The snares of death came on me. ⁶ In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried out to my God. He heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry before him came into his ears.

¹⁶ He sent from on high. He took me. He drew me out of many waters.

¹⁶ Turn to me, and have mercy on me, for I am desolate and afflicted. ¹⁷ Relieve me from the distresses of my heart, and bring me out of my distresses. ¹⁸ Consider my affliction and my travail. Forgive all my sins.

² He also brought me up out of a pit of tumult, out of the miry clay; and he set my feet on a rock, making my steps secure.

⁷ Deep calls to deep at the noise of your waterfalls. All your breakers and waves have swept over me.

¹ [For the Chief Musician. To the tune of "Lilies." By David.] Save me, God, for the waters have come up to my neck. ² I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold. I have come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.

¹⁴ Deliver me out of the mire, and do not let me sink. Let me be delivered from those who hate me, and out of the deep waters. ¹⁵ Do not let the flood waters overwhelm me, neither let the deep swallow me up. Do not let the pit shut its mouth on me.

²⁰ You, who have shown us many and bitter troubles, you will let me live. You will bring us up again from the depths of the earth.

⁶ You have laid me in the lowest pit, in the darkest depths. ⁷ Your wrath lies heavily on me. You have afflicted me with all your waves. Selah.

³ The cords of death surrounded me, the pains of Sheol got a hold of me. I found trouble and sorrow. ⁴ Then I called on the name of the LORD: "LORD, I beg you, deliver my soul."

¹ [A Song of Ascents.] I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from?

¹ [A Song of Ascents. By David.] I was glad when they said to me, "Let's go to the LORD's house."

¹ [A Song of Ascents.] To you I do lift up my eyes, you who sit in the heavens.

¹ [A Song of Ascents. By David.] If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, let Israel now say,

¹ [A Song of Ascents.] Those who trust in the LORD are as Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but remains forever.

¹ [A Song of Ascents.] When the LORD brought back those who returned to Zion, we were like those who dream.

¹ [A Song of Ascents. By Solomon.] Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

¹ [A Song of Ascents.] Blessed is everyone who fears the LORD, who walks in his ways.

¹ [A Song of Ascents.] Many times they have afflicted me from my youth up. Let Israel now say,

⁵³ They have cut off my life in a pit, and have cast a stone on me. ⁵⁴ Waters flowed over my head; I said, 'I am finished.' ⁵⁵ I called on your name, LORD, out of the depths of the pit.

² He said, "I called because of my affliction to the LORD. He answered me. Out of the belly of Sheol I cried. You heard my voice. ³ For you threw me into the depths, in the heart of the seas. The flood was all around me. All your breakers and waves passed over me. ⁴ I said, 'I have been banished from your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple.'

⁷ In the days of his flesh, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence.
