¹ [A Song of Ascents.] Many times they have afflicted me from my youth up. Let Israel now say, ² many times they have afflicted me from my youth up, yet they have not prevailed against me. ³ The plowers plowed on my back. They made their furrows long. ⁴ The LORD is righteous. He has cut apart the cords of the wicked. ⁵ Let them be disappointed and turned backward, all those who hate Zion. ⁶ Let them be as the grass on the housetops, which withers before it grows up; ⁷ with which the reaper doesn't fill his hand, nor he who binds sheaves, his bosom. ⁸ Neither do those who go by say, "The blessing of the LORD be on you. We bless you in the name of the LORD."

¹² But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread out. And the Egyptians were in dread of the children of Israel. ¹³ And the Egyptians ruthlessly made the children of Israel labor, ¹⁴ and they made their lives bitter with hard labor, in mortar and in brick, and in all manner of labor in the field, all their labors which they ruthlessly made them do.

²² Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, "You are to cast every son who is born to the Hebrews into the river, but every daughter you are to keep alive."

⁷ "You shall no longer give the people straw to make brick, as before. Let them go and gather straw for themselves. ⁸ The number of the bricks, which they made before, you require from them. You shall not diminish anything of it, for they are idle; therefore they cry, saying, 'Let us go and sacrifice to our God.' ⁹ Let heavier work be laid on the men, so they may labor at it and pay no attention to lying words." ¹⁰ The taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spoke to the people, saying, "This is what Pharaoh says: 'I will not give you straw. ¹¹ Go yourselves, get straw where you can find it, for nothing of your work shall be diminished.'" ¹² So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather dry stalks for straw. ¹³ The taskmasters kept pressing them, saying, "Fulfill your work quota, your daily amount, as when there was straw." ¹⁴ The officers of the children of Israel, whom Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten, and demanded, "Why haven't you fulfilled your quota both yesterday and today, in making brick as before?" ¹⁵ Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried to Pharaoh, saying, "Why do you deal this way with your servants? ¹⁶ No straw is given to your servants, and they tell us, 'Make brick.' and look, your servants are beaten; but the fault is in your own people." ¹⁷ But he said, "You are idle. You are idle. Therefore you say, 'Let us go and sacrifice to God.' ¹⁸ Go therefore now, and work, for no straw shall be given to you, yet you shall deliver the same number of bricks." ¹⁹ The officers of the children of Israel saw that they were in trouble, when it was said, "You shall not diminish anything from your daily quota of bricks."

¹⁵ Wherever they went out, the hand of the LORD was against them for harm, as the LORD had spoken, and as the LORD had sworn to them: and they were in great distress.

⁸ Therefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Cushan Rishathaim king of Aram Naharaim; and the children of Israel served Cushan Rishathaim eight years.

⁸ And they shattered and oppressed the children of Israel that year. Eighteen years they oppressed all the children of Israel that were beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead. ⁹ The people of Ammon passed over the Jordan to fight also against Judah, and against Benjamin, and against the house of Ephraim; so that Israel was very distressed. ¹⁰ The children of Israel cried to the LORD, saying, "We have sinned against you, even because we have forsaken our God, and have served the Baals." ¹¹ The LORD said to the children of Israel, "Did I not save you from the Egyptians, and from the Amorites, from the people of Ammon, and from the Philistines? ¹² Also the Sidonians, and Amalek, and Midian oppressed you; and you cried to me, and I saved you out of their hand.

¹⁹ Now there was no smith found throughout all the land of Israel; for the Philistines had said, "Lest the Hebrews make them swords or spears."

¹ Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the people from the exile were building a temple to the LORD, the God of Israel; ² then they drew near to Zerubbabel, and to the heads of ancestral houses, and said to them, "Let us build with you; for we seek your God, as you do; and we sacrifice to him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought us up here." ³ But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of ancestral houses of Israel, said to them, "You have nothing to do with us in building a house to our God; but we ourselves together will build to the LORD, the God of Israel, as king Koresh the king of Persia has commanded us." ⁴ Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building, ⁵ and hired counselors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Koresh king of Persia, even until the reign of Daryavesh king of Persia. ⁶ In the reign of Achashyerosh, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem. ⁷ In the days of Artachshasta wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his companions, to Artachshasta king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in Aramaic, and set forth in the Aramaic language. ⁸ Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artachshasta the king as follows: ⁹ [From] Rehum the commander, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions, the Dinaites, and the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Shushanchites, the Dehaites, the Elamites, ¹⁰ and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and in the rest of the country beyond the River. ¹¹ This is the copy of the letter that they sent to Artachshasta the king: Your servants the men beyond the River. And now, ¹² be it known to the king, that the Jews who came up from you have come to us to Jerusalem; they are building the rebellious and wicked city, and have finished the walls, and repaired the foundations. ¹³ Be it known now to the king that if this city is built, and the walls finished, they will not pay tribute, custom, or toll, and in the end it will be hurtful to the kings. ¹⁴ Now because we eat the salt of the palace, and it is not appropriate for us to see the king's dishonor, therefore have we sent and informed the king; ¹⁵ that search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers: so you shall find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful to kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time; for which cause was this city laid waste. ¹⁶ We inform the king that, if this city be built, and the walls finished, by this means you shall have no portion beyond the River. ¹⁷ Then the king sent an answer to Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions who dwell in Samaria, and in the rest of the country beyond the River: Peace, and so forth. ¹⁸ The letter which you sent to us has been plainly read before me. ¹⁹ I decreed, and search has been made, and it is found that this city of old time has made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made in it. ²⁰ There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, who have ruled over all the country beyond the River; and tribute, custom, and toll, was paid to them. ²¹ Make a decree now to cause these men to cease, and that this city not be built, until a decree shall be made by me. ²² Take heed that you not be slack herein: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings? ²³ Then when the copy of king Artachshasta's letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went in haste to Jerusalem to the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.

¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up. While I suffer your terrors, I am distracted.

¹ [A Song of Ascents.] I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from?

¹ [A Song of Ascents. By David.] I was glad when they said to me, "Let's go to the LORD's house."

¹ [A Song of Ascents.] To you I do lift up my eyes, you who sit in the heavens.

¹ [A Song of Ascents. By David.] If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, let Israel now say,

¹ [A Song of Ascents.] Those who trust in the LORD are as Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but remains forever.

¹ [A Song of Ascents.] When the LORD brought back those who returned to Zion, we were like those who dream.

¹ [A Song of Ascents. By Solomon.] Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

¹ [A Song of Ascents.] Blessed is everyone who fears the LORD, who walks in his ways.

¹² "Stand now with your enchantments, and with the multitude of your sorceries, in which you have labored from your youth; if so be you shall be able to profit, if so be you may prevail.

² "Go, and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, 'Thus says the LORD, "I remember you, the devotion of your youth, the love of your weddings; how you went after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.

²¹ I spoke to you in your prosperity; but you said, 'I will not hear.' This has been your way from your youth, that you did not obey my voice.

³ Judah has gone into exile because of affliction and harsh servitude; she dwells among the nations, she finds no rest: all her persecutors overtook her in the midst of her distress.

³ and they played the prostitute in Egypt; they played the prostitute in their youth; there were their breasts pressed, and there was handled the bosom of their virginity.

¹⁵ I will give her vineyards from there, and the Valley of Achor for a door of hope; and she will respond there, as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.

¹ "When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my son.

¹⁹ He will deliver you in six troubles; yes, in seven there shall no evil touch you.

¹⁹ Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him out of them all.

¹ [For the Chief Musician. A contemplation by the sons of Korah.] As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants after you, God.

¹³ I was pushed hard, to make me fall, but the LORD helped me.

¹⁸ I also tell you that you are Peter, and on this Rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.

³³ I have told you these things, that in me you may have peace. In the world you have oppression; but cheer up. I have overcome the world."

³⁵ Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Could oppression, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? ³⁶ Even as it is written, "For your sake we are killed all day long. We were regarded as sheep to be slaughtered." ³⁷ No, in all these things, we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. ³⁸ For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, ³⁹ nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

⁸ We are pressed on every side, yet not crushed; perplexed, yet not to despair; ⁹ pursued, yet not forsaken; struck down, yet not destroyed;

⁸ They did not prevail, neither was a place found for them any more in heaven. ⁹ The great serpent was thrown down, the ancient serpent, he who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world. He was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

⁷ "As when one plows and breaks up the earth, our bones are scattered at the mouth of Sheol."

²³ and I will put it into the hand of those who afflict you, who have said to your soul, 'Bow down, that we may walk over you;' and you have laid your back as the ground, and as the street, to those who walk over."

¹⁵ The LORD, the God of Israel, you are righteous; for we are left a remnant that has escaped, as it is this day. Look, we are before you in our guiltiness; for none can stand before you because of this."

³³ However you are just in all that has come on us; for you have dealt truly, but we have done wickedly;

¹³⁷ TZADE. You are righteous, LORD. Your judgments are upright.

⁶ Blessed be the LORD, who has not given us as a prey to their teeth. ⁷ Our soul has escaped like a bird out of the fowler's snare. The snare is broken, and we have escaped.

⁵ The proud have hidden a snare for me, they have spread the cords of a net by the path. They have set traps for me. Selah. ⁶ I said to the LORD, "You are my God." Listen to the cry of my petitions, LORD. ⁷ LORD, the Lord, the strength of my salvation, you have covered my head in the day of battle. ⁸ LORD, do not grant the desires of the wicked. Do not let their evil plans succeed, or they will become proud. Selah. ⁹ As for the head of those who surround me, let the mischief of their own lips cover them. ¹⁰ Let burning coals fall on them. Let them be thrown into the fire, into miry pits, from where they never rise. ¹¹ An evil speaker won't be established in the earth. Evil will hunt the violent man to overthrow him.

¹⁸ The LORD is righteous, for I have rebelled against his commandment. Please listen all you people, and see my suffering. My virgins and my young men have gone into captivity.

²² The LORD's faithful love does not cease; his compassion does not fail.

⁷ Lord, righteousness belongs to you, but to us open shame, as at this day, to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to all Israel, who are near, and who are far off, through all the countries where you have driven them, because of their unfaithful deeds that they have committed against you.

¹³ Haman recounted to Zeresh his wife and all his friends everything that had happened to him. Then his wise men and Zeresh his wife said to him, "If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of Jewish descent, you will not prevail against him, but you will surely fall before him."

⁵ The Jews struck all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, and with slaughter and destruction, and did what they wanted to those who hated them.

¹³ Let my accusers be put to shame and consumed. Let them be covered with disgrace and scorn who want to harm me.

⁴ "Come," they say, "and let's destroy them as a nation, that the name of Israel may be remembered no more." ⁵ For they have conspired together with one mind. They form an alliance against you. ⁶ The tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites; Moab, and the Hagrites; ⁷ Gebal, Ammon, and Amalek; Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre; ⁸ Assyria also is joined with them. They have helped the descendants of Lot. Selah. ⁹ Do to them as you did to Midian, as to Sisera, as to Jabin, at the river Kishon; ¹⁰ who perished at Endor, who became as dung for the earth. ¹¹ Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb; yes, all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna;

⁶ Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. Those who love you will prosper.

¹² Therefore it will happen that, when the Lord has performed his whole work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, he will punish the fruit of the willful proud heart of the king of Assyria, and the insolence of his haughty looks.

²² this is the word which the LORD has spoken concerning him. The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and ridiculed you. The daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you.

²⁸ But I know your sitting down, your going out, your coming in, and your raging against me. ²⁹ Because of your raging against me, and because your arrogance has come up into my ears, therefore I will put my hook in your nose and my bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came.

³⁵ 'For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake, and for my servant David's sake.'"

¹¹ Now many nations have assembled against you, that say, "Let her be defiled, and let our eye gloat over Zion."

¹⁴ So the angel who talked with me said to me, "Proclaim, saying, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts: "I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy. ¹⁵ I am very angry with the nations that are at ease; for I was but only a little angry, but they added to the calamity." ¹⁶ Therefore thus says the LORD: "I have returned to Jerusalem with mercy. My house will be built in it," says the LORD of hosts, "and a line shall be stretched forth over Jerusalem."' ¹⁷ "Proclaim further, saying, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts: "My cities will again overflow with prosperity, and the LORD will again comfort Zion, and will again choose Jerusalem."'"

³ It will happen in that day, that I will make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all the peoples. All who burden themselves with it will be severely wounded, and all the nations of the earth will be gathered together against it.

⁶ In that day I will make the chieftains of Judah like a pan of fire among wood, and like a flaming torch among sheaves; and they will devour all the surrounding peoples, on the right hand and on the left; and Jerusalem will yet again dwell in their own place, even in Jerusalem.

²² If anyone does not love the Lord, a curse be on him. Our Lord, come.

²⁶ Therefore their inhabitants were of small power. They were dismayed and confounded. They were like the grass of the field, and like the green herb, like the grass on the rooftops when it is scorched by the east wind.

² For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither like the green herb.

⁷ though the wicked spring up as the grass, and all the evildoers flourish, they will be destroyed forever.

²⁷ Therefore their inhabitants had little power. They were dismayed and confounded. They were like the grass of the field, and like the green herb, like the grass on the rooftops when it is scorched by the east wind.

⁵ Thus says the LORD: "Cursed is the man who trusts in man, and makes flesh his arm, and whose heart departs from the LORD. ⁶ For he shall be like the heath in the desert, and shall not see when good comes, but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, a salt land and not inhabited.

⁶ But when the sun had risen, they were scorched. Because they had no root, they withered away.

⁶ He who goes out weeping, carrying seed for sowing, will certainly come again with joy, carrying his sheaves.

¹⁰ For you have forgotten the God of your salvation, and have not remembered the rock of your strength. Therefore you plant pleasant plants, and set out foreign seedlings. ¹¹ In the day of your planting, you hedge it in. In the morning, you make your seed blossom, but the harvest flees away in the day of grief and of desperate sorrow.

⁷ For they sow the wind, and they will reap the whirlwind. He has no standing grain. The stalk will yield no head. If it does yield, strangers will swallow it up.

⁸ For he who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption. But he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap everlasting life.

⁴ Look, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and said to the reapers, "The LORD be with you." They answered him, "The LORD bless you."

²⁶ Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD. We have blessed you out of the house of the LORD.
