¹ Do not be envious of evil men; neither desire to be with them:

¹⁰ Lot lifted up his eyes, and saw all the plain of the Jordan, that it was well-watered everywhere, like the garden of God, like the land of Egypt, in the direction of Zoar. (This was before God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) ¹¹ So Lot chose the Plain of the Jordan for himself. Lot traveled east, and they separated from each other. ¹² Abram lived in the land of Canaan, and Lot lived in the cities of the plain, and moved his tent as far as Sodom. ¹³ Now the people of Sodom were evil, sinning greatly against God.

¹ The two angels came to Sodom at evening. Lot sat in the gate of Sodom. Lot saw them, and rose up to meet them. He bowed himself with his face to the earth, ² and he said, "See now, my lords, please turn aside into your servant's house, and stay all night, and wash your feet, then you may rise up early, and go on your way." They said, "No, but we will stay in the street all night." ³ But he urged them so strongly that they came in with him, and entered into his house. He made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate. ⁴ But before they could lie down to sleep, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, both young and old, all the people from every quarter. ⁵ They called to Lot, and said to him, "Where are the men who came in to you this night? Bring them out to us, that we may have sex with them." ⁶ Lot went out to them at the entrance, and shut the door behind him. ⁷ He said, "Please, my brothers, do not act so wickedly. ⁸ Look, I have two virgin daughters. Please let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them what seems good to you. Only do not do anything to these men, because they have come under the protection of my roof." ⁹ They said, "Stand back." They said, "This one fellow came in to live as a foreigner, and he appoints himself a judge. Now will we deal worse with you, than with them." They pressed hard on the man Lot, and drew near to break the door. ¹⁰ But the men reached out their hands and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut the door. ¹¹ They struck the men who were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they were unable to find the door.

⁹ Do not gather my soul with sinners, nor my life with bloodthirsty men;

¹ [By David.] Do not fret because of evildoers, neither be envious against those who work unrighteousness.

⁷ Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him. Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who makes wicked plots happen.

³ For I was envious of the arrogant, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

¹¹ If they say, "Come with us, Let's lie in wait for blood; let's lurk secretly for the innocent without cause; ¹² let's swallow them up alive like Sheol, and whole, like those who go down into the pit. ¹³ We'll find all valuable wealth. We'll fill our houses with spoil. ¹⁴ Throw in your lot with us. We'll all have one purse." ¹⁵ My son, do not walk in the way with them. Keep your foot from their path,

³¹ Do not envy the man of violence. Choose none of his ways.

²⁰ One who walks with wise men grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm.

¹⁷ Do not let your heart envy sinners; but rather fear the LORD all the day long.

¹⁹ Do not fret yourself because of evildoers; neither be envious of the wicked:

¹⁹ Now the works of the flesh are obvious, which are: sexual immorality, uncleanness, lustfulness, ²⁰ idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousies, outbursts of anger, rivalries, divisions, heresies, ²¹ envyings, murders, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these; of which I forewarn you, even as I also forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

⁵ Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, "The Spirit which he made to dwell in us yearns jealously"? ⁶ But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
