¹ Wine is a mocker, and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise.

²¹ He drank of the wine and got drunk. He was uncovered within his tent. ²² And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father naked and told his two brothers outside. ²³ Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it on both their shoulders, went in backwards, and covered the nakedness of their father. Their faces were turned the other way, and they did not see their father's nakedness.

³¹ The firstborn said to the younger, "Our father is old, and there is not a man in the land to sleep with us according to the custom of all the land. ³² Come, let's make our father drink wine, and we will sleep with him, that we may preserve our family through our father." ³³ They made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and slept with her father. He did not know when she lay down, nor when she arose. ³⁴ It came to pass on the next day, that the firstborn said to the younger, "Look, I slept last night with my father. Let us make him drink wine again tonight. You go in, and sleep with him, that we may preserve our family through our father." ³⁵ They made their father drink wine that night also. The younger went and slept with him. He did not know when she lay down, nor when she got up. ³⁶ Thus both of Lot's daughters became pregnant by their father.

³⁶ Abigail came to Nabal; and look, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king. Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very drunk. Therefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light. ³⁷ It happened in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, that his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. ³⁸ It happened about ten days after, that the LORD struck Nabal, so that he died.

¹³ And the next day David summoned him, and he ate and drank in his presence, and he made him drunk. But in the evening he went out and lay on a bed with the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house.

²⁸ And Absalom commanded his servants, saying, "Mark now, when Amnon's heart is merry with wine; and when I tell you, 'Strike Amnon,' then kill him. Do not be afraid. Haven't I commanded you? Be courageous, and be valiant."

¹⁶ They went out at noon. But Ben Hadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty-two kings who helped him. ¹⁷ the young men of the governors of the districts went out first; and Ben Hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, "Men are coming out from Samaria." ¹⁸ He said, "If they have come out for peace, take them alive; or if they have come out for war, take them alive." ¹⁹ So these went out of the city, the young men of the governors of the districts, and the army which followed them. ²⁰ They each killed his man. The Arameans fled, and Israel pursued them. Ben Hadad the king of Aram escaped on a horse with horsemen. ²¹ The king of Israel went out, and struck the horses and chariots, and killed the Arameans with a great slaughter.

²⁹ Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? ³⁰ Those who stay long at the wine; those who go to seek out mixed wine. ³¹ Do not look at the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly. ³² In the end, it bites like a serpent, and poisons like a viper. ³³ Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind will imagine confusing things. ³⁴ Yes, you will be as he who lies down in the midst of the sea, or as he who lies on top of the rigging: ³⁵ "They hit me, and I was not hurt. They beat me, and I do not feel it. When will I wake up? I can do it again. I can find another."

⁴ It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, or for princes to take strong drink,

²² Woe to those who are mighty to drink wine, and champions at mixing strong drink;

⁷ They also reel with wine, and stagger with strong drink. The priest and the prophet reel with strong drink. They are swallowed up by wine. They stagger with strong drink. They err in vision. They stumble in judgment.

¹² "Come," say they, "I will get wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and tomorrow shall be as this day, great beyond measure."

¹¹ Prostitution, wine, and new wine take away understanding.

⁵ On the day of our king, the princes made themselves sick with the heat of wine. He joined his hand with mockers.

¹⁵ "Woe to him who gives his neighbor drink, pouring your inflaming wine until they are drunk, so that you may gaze at their naked bodies. ¹⁶ You are filled with shame, and not glory. You will also drink, and be exposed. The cup of the LORD's right hand will come around to you, and disgrace will cover your glory.

¹⁰ nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor slanderers, nor swindlers, will inherit the Kingdom of God.

²¹ envyings, murders, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these; of which I forewarn you, even as I also forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

¹⁸ Do not get drunk with wine, which is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,
