¹⁴ The days in which we came from Kadesh Barnea, until we had come over the Wadi Zered, were thirty-eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were consumed from the midst of the camp, as the LORD swore to them.

²⁶ They went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, to the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word to them, and to all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.

²⁸ Tell them, 'As I live, says the LORD, surely as you have spoken in my ears, so will I do to you: ²⁹ your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness; and all who were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, who have murmured against me, ³⁰ surely you shall not come into the land, concerning which I swore that I would make you dwell in it, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun. ³¹ But your little ones, that you said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which you have rejected. ³² But as for you, your dead bodies shall fall in this wilderness. ³³ Your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your prostitution, until your dead bodies be consumed in the wilderness. ³⁴ After the number of the days in which you spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, you will bear your iniquities, even forty years, and you will know my alienation.' ³⁵ I, the LORD, have spoken, surely this will I do to all this evil congregation, who are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die."

⁶⁴ But among these there was not a man of them who were numbered by Moses and Aaron the priest, who numbered the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai. ⁶⁵ For the LORD had said of them, They shall surely die in the wilderness. There was not left a man of them, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

¹¹ 'Surely none of the men who came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob; because they have not wholly followed me:

² It is eleven days' journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh Barnea.

¹⁹ We traveled from Horeb, and went through all that great and terrible wilderness which you saw, by the way to the hill country of the Amorites, as the LORD our God commanded us; and we came to Kadesh Barnea.

³⁴ The LORD heard the voice of your words, and was angry, and swore, saying, ³⁵ "Surely not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land, which I swore to give to your fathers,

⁴⁶ So you stayed in Kadesh many days, according to the days that you remained.

³ You turn man to destruction, saying, "Return, you descendants of Adam."

⁹ For all our days have passed away in your wrath. We bring our years to an end as a sigh.

¹¹ Therefore I swore in my wrath, "They won't enter into my rest."

²⁶ Therefore he swore to them that he would overthrow them in the wilderness,

¹⁵ "'"Moreover also I swore to them in the wilderness, that I would not bring them into the land which I had given to them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the most beautiful of all lands;

⁵ However with most of them, God was not well pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.

⁸ do not harden your hearts, as in the provocation, like as in the day of the trial in the wilderness, ⁹ where your fathers tested me and challenged me, and saw my works for forty years. ¹⁰ Therefore I was displeased with this generation, and said, 'They always err in their heart, but they did not know my ways;' ¹¹ as I swore in my wrath, 'They will not enter into my rest.'" ¹² Beware, brothers, lest perhaps there be in any one of you an evil heart of unbelief, in falling away from the living God; ¹³ but exhort one another day by day, so long as it is called "today;" lest any one of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. ¹⁴ For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our confidence firm to the end: ¹⁵ while it is said, "Today if you will hear his voice, do not harden your hearts, as in the rebellion." ¹⁶ For who, when they heard, rebelled? No, did not all those who came out of Egypt by Moses? ¹⁷ With whom was he displeased forty years? Was not it with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? ¹⁸ To whom did he swear that they would not enter into his rest, but to those who were disobedient? ¹⁹ We see that they were not able to enter in because of unbelief.

⁵ Now I want to remind you, though you already know all these things, that the Lord, having saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.
