¹ These are the Actes of Nehemiah the sonne of Hachalia. It fortuned in the moneth Casleu in the twentye yeare, that I was in the castell at Susan: ² and Hanani one of my brethren came with certayne men of Iuda, and I asked them how the Iewes dyd that were delyuered and escaped from the captyuite, and how it wente at Ierusalem. ³ And they sayde vnto me: The remnaunt of the captiuite are there in the lande in great misfortune and rebuke. The walles of Ierusalem are broken doune, and the gates thereof are brente wyth fyre. ⁴ When I hearde these wordes, I sat me doune and wepte, and mourned two dayes, & fasted and prayed before the God of heauen ⁵ & sayde: O Lorde God of heauen, thou greate & terryble God, thou that kepest couenaunt and mercy for them that loue the, and obserue thy commaundementes: ⁶ let thyne eares herken & thyne eyes be open, that thou mayeste heare the prayer of thy seruaunte, whiche I praye nowe before the daye and nyghte for the chyldren of Israel thy seruauntes, and knowledge the synnes of the chyldren of Israel, which we haue commytted agaynst the. And I and my fathers house haue synned also. ⁷ We haue bene corrupt vnto the, in that we haue not kepte the commaundementes, statutes and lawes, which thou commaundedst thy seruaunt Moyses. ⁸ Yet call to remembraunce the word that thou commaundest thy seruaunt Moses, and saydeste: Yf ye transgresse, then wyll I scater you abroade among the nacyons. ⁹ But yf ye turne vnto me, and kepe my commaundementes and do them: though ye were caste oute vnto the vttermost parte of heauen yet wyll I gather you from thence, and wyll brynge you from thence, euen vnto the place, that I haue chosen for my name to dwel ther ¹⁰ They are thy seruauntes, & thy people whom thou haste delyuered thorowe thy greate power and myghtye hande. ¹¹ O Lorde, let thyne eares herken to the prayer of thy seruaunte, & the prayer of thy seruauntes, whose desyre is to feare thy name, and let thy seruaunte prospere thys daye, and graunte hym mercye in the syght of thys man: for I was the kynges buttelar.

¹¹ Deliuer me from the handes of my brother Esau: for I feare hym: least he wyll come and smyte the mother wyth the chyldren.

²⁸ And he said: thou shalt be called Iacob no more, but Israel. For thou hast wresteled with God and hast preuayled.

² And Pharao was angrye wt them and put them inwarde in hys chefe marshals house:

⁹ And the chefe butlar tolde his dreame to Ioseph and sayde vnto hym. In my dreame me thought there stode a vyne before me, ¹⁰ & in the vyne were .iij. braunches, and it was as though it budded, and her blossoms shott forth: & the grapes there of waxed rype. ¹¹ And I had Pharaos cuppe in my hand, and toke of the grapes & wronge them into Pharaos cuppe, & delyuered Pharaos cuppe in to hys hande. ¹² And Ioseph sayd vnto him, this is the interpretacion of it. ¹³ The .iij. braunches are thre dayes: for wythin thre dayes shall Pharao lyft vp thyne heade, & restore the vnto thyne offyce agayne, and thou shalt delyuer Pharaos cuppe in to his hande, after the old maner, euen as thou dydest when thou wast his butlar.

²¹ And restored the chefe buttelar vnto hys buttelarshippe agayne, and he reched the cuppe in to Pharaos hande,

²³ Notwythstandyng the chefe buttelar remembred not Ioseph, but forgat hym.

⁹ Than spake the chefe buttelar vnto Pharao saying. I do remembre my faute thys daye.

¹⁴ And God almightye geue you mercy in the syghte of the man and send you youre other brother and also BenIamin, and I wylbe as a man robbed of his chyldren.

¹ Then the Lord sayed vnto Moyses: Nowe shalte thou se what I wyll do vnto Pharao for wyth a myghtye hande shall he let them go, and wyth a myghty hande shal he dryue them out of his land.

⁹ Therfore it shall be a sygne vnto the vpon thyne hande a remembraunce betwene thyne eyes, that the Lordes lawe maye be in thy mouth. For with a stronge hande the Lord brought the out of Egypt,

¹³ And thou cariedest wyth thy mercye this people which thou delyueredest, & broughtest them wyth thy strength vnto thy holy habitacion.

⁶ and yet shew mercy vnto thousandes among them that loue me and kepe my commaundementes.

³³ And I wyl strawe you among the Heathen, and wyl draw out a swerde after you, and youre land shal be waste, and your cityes desolate. ³⁴ Then the Lande shall reioyce in hyr Sabbothes, as longe as it lyeth voyde and ye in youre enemyes lande: euen then shal the Lande kepe holy day and reioyce in hir Sabbothes. ³⁵ And as longe as it lyeth voyde it shall rest, for that it could not rest in your Sabothes, when ye dwelt therin. ³⁶ And vpon them that are left a liue of you I wyl sende a fayntnes into theyr hertes, in all the land of their enemies: so that the sound of a leaf that falleth, shall chase them & they shall flee as though they fled a swerde, and shall fal, no man folowyng them. ³⁷ And they shal fal, one vpon another, as it were before a swerde, euen no man folowyng them, and ye shal haue no power to stand before your enemies. ³⁸ And ye shall peryshe amonge the Heathen, and the land of your enemies shal eate you vp. ³⁹ And they that are lefte of you, shall pyne away in theyr vnryghtuousnes, euen in their enymyes lande, and also in the misdedes of their fathers shall they consume.

³⁴ These are the commaundementes whyche the Lorde gaue Moses in charge to giue vnto the chyldren of Israell in mount Sinai.

¹ And now herken Israel vnto the ordinaunces & lawes which I teach you, for to do them, that ye maye lyue & go and conquere the lande whych the Lorde God of youre fathers geueth you.

⁵ Beholde, I haue taught you ordinaunces & lawes such as the Lorde my God commaunded me that ye should do euen so in the land whither ye go to possesse it.

²⁵ If after thou haste gotten chyldren and chyldrens chyldren & hast dwelt long in the lande, ye shall marre your selues and make grauen ymages after the likenes of whatsoeuer it be, and shall worke wyckednes in the syght of the Lord thy God, to prouoke him. ²⁶ I cal heauen and earth to recorde vnto you thys day, that ye shal shortely perishe from of the lande whither ye go ouer Iordan to possesse it: ye shal not prolong your daies therin but shal shortly be destroyed. ²⁷ And the Lorde shal scatter you among nations, & ye shalbe left fewe in numbre among the people whyther the lord shal bryng you,

²⁹ Neuerthelater ye shall seke the Lord your God euen ther, and shall fynde hym it thou seeke hym wyth all thyne herte and wyth all thy soule. ³⁰ In thy tribulation and when all these thynges are come vpon the euen in the later dayes, thou shalte turne vnto the Lorde thy God, and shalte herken vnto hys voyce. ³¹ For the Lord thy God is a pitiful God, he wil not forsake the neyther destroy the, nor forget the appoyntment made wt thy fathers whyche he sware vnto them.

¹ And Moses called vnto all Israel & said vnto them: Heare Israell the ordinaunces and lawes which I speake in thine eares this daye, & learne theim, & take hede that ye do them.

⁹ Vnderstande therefore, that the Lord thy God he is god & that a true god, which kepeth pointment and mercy vnto them that loue him and kepe hys commaundementes, euen thorowe oute a thousande generations

²¹ Se thou feare them not for the Lord thy God is among you a mighty God and a terrible.

²⁹ Moreouer they are thy people and thine enherytaunce, whyche thou broughteste oute wyth thy myghty power & wyth thy streatched out arme.

⁵ but ye shal enquere the place which the Lord your God shal haue chosen out of all youre trybes to putte hys name there, and there to dwell.

²¹ If the place which the Lorde thy God hath chosen to put his name there be farre from the, then thou maiste kyll of thy oxen and of thy shepe which the Lord hath geuen the as I haue commaunded the & thou maiste eate in thyne owne citye whatsoeuer thy soule lusteth.

¹⁵ And remembre that thou waste a seruaunt in the lande of Egypte, and the Lord thy God delyuered the thence: wherfore I commaunde the thys thyng to daye.

¹⁴ And se that thou bowe not from any of these wordes which I commaunde the this daye ether to the ryght hande or to the lefte, that thou woldest goo after straunge goddes to serue them. ¹⁵ But and yf thou wilt not herken vnto the voice of the Lord thy God to kepe and to do al his commaundementes and ordinaunces which I commaunde the thys day: then all these curses shall come vpon the & ouertake the:

⁶⁴ And the Lord shall scater the amonge all nacions from the one ende of the world vnto the other and there thou shalt serue straunge goddes, whyche nether thou nor thy fathers haue knowne: euen wood and stone.

² and come agayne vnto the Lorde thy GOD and herken vnto hys voyce accordynge to all that I commaunde the this day: both thou and thy children with al thyne herte and al thy soule: ³ Then the Lorde thy God wyll turne thy captiuite and haue compassyon vpon the, and goo and fet the agayn from all the nacyons, amonge which the Lord thy God shal haue scatered the. ⁴ Though thou wast cast vnto the extreme partes of heauen: euen from thence wyl the Lorde thy God gether the and from thence fett th ⁵ and brynge the into the lande which thy fathers possessed, & thou shalt enioye it. And he wyl shewe the kyndnesse and multiplye the aboue thy fathers.

²⁶ I haue determined to skatter them thorowoute the worlde, and to make awaye the remembraunce of theym from amonge men. ²⁷ Were it not that I feared the raylynge of theyr enemies, lest theyr aduersaries woulde be proude and saye: our hye hande hathe done all these worckes and not the Lorde. ²⁸ For it is a nation that hath an vnhappye forcast, and hath no vnderstanding in them:

¹⁷ And the messenger answered & sayd: Israel is fled before the Philistines, & there is a great slaughter chaunsed amonge the people, and thy two sonnes, Hophni & Phinehes are dead, & therto the arck of God is taken. ¹⁸ And when he made mencyon of the arcke of God, Eli fell from of hys stole backwarde towarde the gate, and hys necke brake, & he dyed: for he was olde & vnweldye and he had iudged Israel fourtye yeares. ¹⁹ And his doughter in lawe Phynehes wife was wt chylde & nye the byrthe. And when she hearde the tydynges of the taking of the arcke of God, & that her father in law, & her husband were dead, she bowed her self & trauayled, for her paynes came vpon her. ²⁰ And about the time of her death, the wemen that stode about her, said vnto her: feare not, for thou hast borne a sonne. But she aunswered not nor regarded it ²¹ And she named the child Ichabod, saiyng: honoure is departed from Israel. Because the arcke of God was taken, & her father in law and her husband were dead. ²² And therfore she sayde, honoure is gone from Israel, because the arcke of God was taken.

¹¹ it repenteth me that I haue made Saul King. For he is turned from me, & hath not parformed my commaundementes, wherfore Samuel was euyl apayde & cryed vnto the Lord all nyght.

³ and se that thou kepe thy appointment of the Lorde thy God, that thou walke in his waies and kepe his commaundementes, ordinaunce, lawes and testimonies, euen as it is written in the law of Moses: that thou mayest vnderstand al that thou oughtest to do, and al that thou shouldest medyll wyth.

²³ & sayde: Lorde God of Israel, there is no God lyke the in heauen aboue or in the earthe benethe, that kepest appoyntment & mercye wyth thy seruauntes that walcke before the wyth all theyr hertes:

²⁸ but loke to the prayer of thy seruaunt and his supplicacyon O Lorde my God, to geue an eare vnto the noyce and prayer which thy seruaunt prayeth before the thys daye, ²⁹ that thine eyes maye be open vpon thys house nyght & daye, & vpon the place, of whiche thou haste sayde, my name shalbe there: that thou herken vnto the prayer which thy seruaunt shal pray in thys place.

³ And the Lorde sayde vnto hym: I haue hearde thy prayer and intercessyon that thou madest before me, & haue halowed thys house which thou hast buylt, to put my name there for euer, and myne eyes and myne herte shalbe there perpetuallye.

⁶ But and yf ye and youre chyldren shall turne away from after me, and shall not kepe myne ordynaunces whiche I haue set before you, but shall go, & serue other Goddes and bowe youre selues vnto them: ⁷ then I wyll weede Israel oute of the lande whiche I haue geuen them. And this house which I haue halowed for my name, I wyll put out of my syghte, And Israell shall be a prouerbe and a fable vnto all nacyons.

¹⁰ And al the hoste of the Caldeyes that were with the chefe Marshal, brake doune the walles of Ierusalem rounde aboute.

³⁵ and saye: saue vs o God oure sauyoure, and gather vs together, and delyuer vs from amonge the Heathen, to thanke thy holy name, and to prayse the with the prayse that becometh the.

²¹ Moreouer what nacyon on the earth is lyke thy people Israel, which God went and redemed to be his own people, & to make the a name of excellencye & terriblenesse, with castyinge out nacyons from before thy people,

⁴⁰ So now my God let thyne eyes be open & thyne eares attente vnto the prayers made in thys place.

⁴ But he slue not theyr chyldren as it is wrytten in the lawe, euen in the boke of Moses to whome the Lord commaunded saying: the fathers shall not dye for the childrens causes, nor the chyldren for the fathers, but euery man shall dye for hys owne synne.

² And he dyd that pleased the Lorde in all poyntes as dyd hys father Oziah: saue, that he came not to the temple of the Lorde, and that the people dyd yet corrupt them selues.

¹⁰ And now ye purpose to kepe vnder the chyldren of Iuda and Ierusalem and to make them bondemen & bondwemen. What other thynge do ye (ye vnhappye) then offende the Lorde youre God.

⁶ For oure fathers haue trespaced & done euel fauoredly in the eyes of the Lord oure God: and haue forsaken hym, and turned awaye theyre faces from the habitacion of the Lorde and turned to theyr backes.

¹ In the fyrste yeare of Cyrus king of Persia (that the word of the lord spoken by the mouth of Ieremy mighte be fulfylled) the Lord stered vp the sprete of Cyrus kynge of Persia, that he caused it be proclamed thorowout al his empyre, ye and by wrytinge also, saying:

¹ These are the children of the land that went vp oute of the captyuite (whom Nabuchodonozor the kynge of Babylon had caryed awaye vnto Babilon) and came again vnto Ierusalem and into Iuda, euery one vnto hys cyty,

⁸ Be it knowne vnto the kynge, that we came into Iewri to the house of the great God, whyche is buylded with rouge stone, and beames are layed in the walles, and the worcke goeth fast forth and prospered in their handes.

¹¹ But they answered vs with these wordes, and sayd: We are the seruauntes of the God of heauen and earth, & buylde the house that was buylded many yeares a go whyche a greate kynge of Israel buylded and set vp. ¹² And after oure fathers had prouoked the God of heauen vnto wrath, he gaue them ouer into the hand of Nabuchodonozor the kyng of Babilon the Caldee, whiche brake doune thys house, & caried the people away vnto Babilon.

¹² But the God that dwelleth in heauen, destroye al kinges and people, that put to their hande to alter & to breake doune the house of God at Ierusalem. I Darius haue commaunded, that this he diligently done.

⁶ This Esdras was a quicke scribe in the lawe of Moses, whiche the Lord God of Israel dyd geue. And the kinge gaue him al that he requireth accordynge to the hande of the Lord his God vpon him. ⁷ And there went vp certayne of the children of Israel, & of the priestes, and of the Leuites, of the syngers, of the porters, and of the Nethinims vnto Ierusalem, in the seuenth yeare of kinge Arthaxerses.

²⁷ Praysed be the Lord God of our fathers which so had inspired the kinges hert to garnysh the house of God at Ierusalem: ²⁸ & hath inclined his mercy vnto me in the presence of the king, & his councelers, & before al the kinges hys estates. And I was conforted (according to the hande of the Lorde my God ouer me) & so gathered I the heades of Israel together, that they might go vp with me.

³ When I hearde thys, I rent my clothes and my rayment, and plucte of the hearre of my heade, and of my bearde, and sate mournyng.

My God I am ashamed, and darre not lyfte vp myne eyes vnto the my God: for our wyckednesses are growne ouer our heade, & oure trespaces are waxen greate vnto the heauen. ⁷ Sence the tyme of oure fathers haue we bene in greate trespace vnto this day, and because of oure wyckednesses haue we and oure kinges ben delyuered into the hand of the kynges of the nacyons, into the swerde, into captyuite, into spoyle, and into confusion of face as it is come to passe thys daye. ⁸ But now is there a lytle and sodayne gracyousnes come from the Lord oure God, so that some of vs are escaped, that he may geue vs a nayle in hys holy place, that oure God may lighte oure eyes, and geue vs a lytle life in oure bondage. ⁹ For we are bondmen, and oure God hath not forsaken vs in oure bondage, and hath enclined mercy vnto vs in the syght of the kinges of Persia, that he should geue vs lyfe, and promote the house of oure God, & to set vp the desolacyon therof, and to geue vs an hedge in Iuda and Ierusalem.

¹⁴ As for vs, we haue turned backe, & haue let go thy commaundementes, to make contracte wyth the people of these abhomynacyons. Wylte thou then be wrothe at vs, tyl we be vtterlye consumed, so that nothing remaine and tyll there be no delyueraunce?

¹ And when Esdras prayed after this maner, & knowledge, wept & laye before the house of God, there resorted vnto hym oute of Israel a very great congregacion of men and wemen, & chyldren: for the people wepte very sore.

⁹ Then all the men of Iuda and Beniamin gathered themselues together vnto Ierusalem in thre dayes, that is on the twentye daye of the nynth moneth: and all the people sate in the strete before the house of God, and trembled, because of the matter, and for the rayne.

¹¹ confesse now therfore vnto the Lorde God of your fathers, and do hys pleasure, and separate youre selues from the people of the lande, and from the straunge wyues.

⁶ let thyne eares herken & thyne eyes be open, that thou mayeste heare the prayer of thy seruaunte, whiche I praye nowe before the daye and nyghte for the chyldren of Israel thy seruauntes, and knowledge the synnes of the chyldren of Israel, which we haue commytted agaynst the. And I and my fathers house haue synned also.

¹ In the moneth Nisan in the twentieth yeare of kynge Arthaxerses, when the wyne stode before him, I toke vp the wyne, & gaue it vnto the kynge & I was heauy in hys presence.

³ & sayde vnto the kynge: God saue the kynges lyfe for euer, shulde I not loke sadly? the cytye of my fathers buryall lyeth waste & the gates thereof are consumed with fyre. ⁴ Then sayde the kyng vnto me: what is then thy request? then made I my prayer to the God of heauen,

⁸ & letters vnto Asaph the Lord of the kynges wood that he may geue me wood for beames to the gates of the palace, which are hard on the house and harde on the walles of the citie, and for the house that I shall entre into. And the kynge gaue me accordynge to the good hand of God vpon me:

¹³ And I rode by nyghte vnto the valey porte before the Dragon well, and to the Donge porte, and consydered the walles of Ierusalem that were broken doune, and the portes thereof consumed with the fyre.

¹⁷ And I sayde vnto them: ye se the myserye that we are in, how Ierusalem lyeth waste, & how the gates thereof are brente with fyre, come let vs buylde vp the walles of Ierusalem, that we be no more a rebuke.

¹⁴ and loked, and gat me vp, and sayde vnto the chefe men and rulers, & to the other people: be not ye afraied of them thinke vpon the greate Lord, which ought to be feared and fyghte for youre brethren, sonnes, doughters, wyues, and houses.

² And I commaunded my brother Hanani, & Hananiah the ruler of the palace at Ierusalem: for he was a faithfull man, and feared God more then dyd many other)

²⁹ and testyfyest vnto them, that they should turne agayne vnto thy lawe. Notwythstandyng they were proude, and herkened not vnto thy commaundementes, but synned in thy lawes (whiche a man shuld do, & lyue in them) & turned the shoulder awaye & were styfnecked, and wolde not heare. ³⁰ And manye yeares dyddest thou forbeare them, & testifyedst vnto them thorowe thy spryte, euen by the offyce of thy Prophetes, and yet wold they not heare Therfore gauest thou them into the hande of the nacyons in the landes. ³¹ But for thy greate mercyes sake thou haste not vtterlye consumed them, nether forsaken them: for thou arte a gracyous and mercyfull God. ³² Nowe oure God, thou great God, mightye and terryble, that thou kepest couenaunte and mercy, regarde not a lytle of the trauaile that hath happened vnto vs, and our kynges prynces, priestes, prophetes, fathers and all thy people, sence the tyme of the kynges of Assur vnto thys daye.

¹ These sealers were: Nehemiah (that is) Hathirsatha the sonne of Hachaliah & Zedekiah,

³ These are the heades of the lande that dwelte in Ierusalem and in the cities of Iuda. And euery one dwelt in hys possession, & in their cyties of Israel, the priestes, Leuites, the Nethinims, and the chyldren of Salomons seruauntes.

¹ In the tyme of Ahasuerus which raygned from Iudia vnto Ethiophia ouer an hundred & seuen and twentye landes, ² what tyme as he sate on hys seate royal in the castel of Susan

⁸ The statutes of the Lord are ryght, and reioyse the hert: the commaundement of the lord is pure, and geueth lyght vnto the eyes. ⁹ The feare of the Lorde is cleane, and endureth for euer: the iudgementes of the Lord are true and ryghtuous altogether.

⁵ Therfore I confessed my sinne vnto the & hyd not myne vnryghtuousnes. I sayde: I wyll knowledge myne offence and accuse my selfe vnto the Lord, & so thou forgauest me the wickednesse of my synne Selah.

The towers and bulworkes shalbe become deunes for euermore, the pleasure of Mules shalbe turned to pasture for shepe:

⁹ Be not to sore displeased (O Lorde) and kepe not our offences to longe in thy remembraunce, but considre that we are all thy people. ¹⁰ The cytyes of thy Sanctuary lye waste, Sion is a wildernesse, and Ierusalem a deserte. ¹¹ Oure holy house whiche is oure bewty, where oure fathers praysed the, is brent vp: yea all oure commodities & pleasures are wasted awaye.

¹⁴ O ye shrinkinge children, turne agayne, sayeth the Lorde: and I wilbe maried wyth you. For I will take one oute of the citie, and two oute of one generacyon from amonge you, and bring you out of Sion:

¹⁸ And I wyll persecute them wyth the swearde, with honger and death. I wyll delyuer them vp to be vexed of all Kyngedomes, to be cursed, abhorred, laughed to scorne, and put to confusyon of all the people, amonge whome I haue scatred them:

³⁷ Beholde, I wyll gather them together from all landes, wherin I haue scatred them in my wrath, in my fearfull, and greate displeasure: and wyll brynge them agayne vnto this place, where they shal dwell safely.

³⁹ Wherfore then murmureth the lyuynge man? let hym murmure at hys owne synne. ⁴⁰ Nun. Let vs loke well vpon oure owne wayes, and remembre oure selues, and turne agayne to the Lorde. ⁴¹ Let vs lyft vp oure hertes with oure handes vnto the Lorde that is in heauen. ⁴² We haue bene dyssemblers, and haue offended, wylt thou therfore not be intreated?

Then shal the stretes and walles be buylded again .lxij. weakes, but wyth harde troublous time. ²⁶ After these .lxii. weakes shall Christ be slaine and they shall haue no pleasure in hym. Then shall there come a people with the Prince, and destroye the cytie and the Sanctuarye: & his ende shall come as the water floude. But the desolacion shall continue till the ende of the battell. ²⁷ He shall make a stronge bonde with many, for the space of a weke: and when the weke is halfe gone, he shall put doune the slayne and meateofferinge. And in the temple there shalbe an abhominable desolacion, till it haue destroyed all. And it is concluded, that thys wasting shall continue vnto the ende.

¹³ For when God made promes to Abraham, because he had no greater thynge to sweare by, he sweare by hym selfe, ¹⁴ saiynge: Surelye I wyl blesse the, and multyplye the in deede. ¹⁵ And so after that he had taryed a longe tyme, he enioyed the promes. ¹⁶ Men verelye sweare by hym that is greater then them selues, & an othe to confyrme the thynge, is amonge them an ende of all stryfe. ¹⁷ So God wyllynge verye aboundauntlye to shewe vnto the heyres of promes, the stablenes of hys counsayle, he added an othe, ¹⁸ that by two immutable thynges (in which it was vnpossyble that GOD shaulde lye) we myghte haue perfecte consolacyon, whiche haue fled, for to holde faste the hope that is set before vs,

¹⁸ Praye for vs. We haue confydence because we haue a good conscience in all thynges, and desyre to lyue honestlye.

⁹ If we knowledge oure sinnes, he is faythfull and iust, to forgeue vs our sinnes, and to clense vs from al vnrightuousnes.

² for true and ryghteous are his iudgementes, for he hath iudged that great whore, whiche dyd corrupte the earth with her fornicacion, & hath auenged the bloude of his seruauntes of her hand.
