¹⁷ Hynder not the ryght of the straunger nor of the fatherlesse, nor take wedowes rayment to pledge.

²¹ Vexe not a straunger nether opresse hym for ye were strangers in the land of Egipt ²² Ye shal trouble no widdowe nor fatherlesse chylde:

²⁶ If thou take thy neyghboures rayment to pledge, that thou delyuer it vnto him agayne by that the sunne go downe. ²⁷ For that is hys couerlet onely: euen the raymente for his skynne wherein he slepeth: or els he wyll crye vnto me and I wyl heare him, for I am mercyfull.

² Thou shalt not folowe a multitude to do euell: neyther answere in a matter of plea that thou (wouldest to folow manye) turne asyde from the trueth,

⁶ Thou shalt not hinder the right of the poore that are amonge you in their sute.

⁹ Thou shalt not oppresse a straunger, for I knowe the herte of a straunger, because ye were straungers in Egypt.

¹⁷ Se that ye know no man in Iudgement: but heare the small as well as the greate & be afrayed of no man, for the iudgment is Gods. And the cause that is to harde for you, bryng vnto me and I will heare it.

¹⁷ For the Lord your God, he is god of Goddes, and Lorde of Lordes, a greate God, a myghty and a terrible whych regardeth no mans person, nor taketh giftes: ¹⁸ but doth right vnto the fatherles & wydowe and loueth the straunger, to giue him fode and raiment.

¹⁹ Wrest not the lawe nor know any person nether take any reward for giftes blind the wise & peruert the wordes of the ryghtuous.

⁶ No man shal take the neather or the vppermylstone to pledge, for then he taketh a mans lyfe to pledge.

¹³ but delyuer hym the pledge agayne by that the sonne go doune, & let him slepe in hys awne rayment and blesse the. And it shalbe ryghteousnes vnto the, before the Lord thy god.

¹⁹ Cursed be he that hyndreth the right of the straunger, fatherlesse and wydowe, and all the people shall saye Amen.

³ Behold here I am: answere me before the Lorde & before his annoynted, whose oxe haue I taken? or whose asse haue I taken? whom haue I done wrong to? or whom haue I pylled? And of whose hand haue I receiued any bribe, to blynde myne eyes therewith? & I wyll restore it you agayne. ⁴ And they sayde thou hast done vs no wronge, nor pylled vs, nether hast thou taken ought of any mannes hande.

⁸ Shoulde suche one then as vseth violence, wrong and oppression (doing al thing of parcialite, and hauinge respecte of personnes) dwel in the lande? ⁹ Thou hast sent wyddowes away emptye and oppressed the poore fatherlesse.

¹¹ When al they that hearde me, called me happie: & when all they that sawe me, wyshed me good. ¹² For I delyuered the poore when he cried, and the fatherlesse that wanted helpe. ¹³ He that shoulde haue bene lost, gaue me a good worde, and the wyddowes herte praysed me. ¹⁴ And why? I put vpon me ryghteousnes, whyche couered me as a garment, and equyte was my croune. ¹⁵ I was an eye vnto the blinde, and a fote to the lame, ¹⁶ I was a father vnto the poore and when I knew not their cause, I sought it oute diligently. ¹⁷ I brake the chaftes of the vnrighteous, and plucte the spoyle oute of their tethe.

¹ A Psalme of Asaph. God standeth in the congregacion of the Goddes, and is a iudge amonge the iudges. ² How long will ye geue wrong iudgement, and accept the personnes of the vngodly? Selah. ³ Defende the poore and fatherlesse, se that suche as be in nede & necessitie haue right. ⁴ Deliuer the outcaste & poore, & saue hym from the hande of the vngodly. ⁵ Neuerthelesse, they will not be learned & vnderstande, but walke on styll in darkenesse: therfore must all the foundacions of the lande be moued.

³ Lorde how longe shall the vngodly, how longe shall the vngodly triumphe? ⁴ How longe shall all wicked doers speake so disdaynfully, and make such proude boastynge? ⁵ They smyte doune thy people, O Lorde, and trouble thine heritage. ⁶ They murthur the wydowe & the straunger, and put the fatherlesse to death.

²⁰ Wilt thou haue any thing to do with the stoole of wickednesse, which ymagineth mischief in the lawe? ²¹ They gather them together agaynste the soule of the righteous, and condemne the innocent bloude.

²² Se that thou robbe not the pore because he is weake, & oppresse not the simple in iudgment: ²³ for the Lorde him selfe wyll defende their cause, and do vyolence vnto them that haue vsed vyolence.

⁵ lest they beyng dronken forget the law, & regarde not the cause of the poore, and of al such as be in aduersite.

⁸ If thou seyst the poore to be oppressed and wrongeously dealt withall, so that equite & the right of the law is wrasted in the lande: maruell not thou at such iudgement, for one great man kepeth touch with another, and the mightye helpe them selfes together.

²³ Thy prynces are traytours and companyons of theues. They loue gyftes altogether, & folowe rewardes. As for the fatherles, they helpe hym not to hys ryght, nether wyll they let the wydowes causes come before them.

¹⁵ Wherfore do ye oppresse my people, and marre the faces of the innocentes? thus shall the God of Hostes reuyle them.

¹⁵ He that ledeth a godly lyfe (saye I) and speaketh the trueth: He that abhorreth to do vyolence and dysceyte: he that kepeth his hande that he touche no rewarde: which stoppeth hys eares that he heare no councel agaynste the innocent: which holdeth doune hys eyes, that he se none euyll.

²⁸ hereof are they fat and welthy, and are runne awaye fro me wyth shameful blasphemyes. They mynistre not the lawe, they make no ende of the fatherlesses cause, they iudge not the poore according to equite.

³ Thus the Lorde commaundeth: kepe equyte and ryghtuousnesse, delyuer the oppressed from the power of the violent: do not greue ner opppresse the straunger, the fatherlesse ner the wyddowe, and shede no innocent bloude in this place.

⁷ In the haue they dispysed father & mother, in the haue they oppressed the straunger, in the haue they vexed the widdowe and the fatherlesse.

²⁹ The people in the lande vseth wicked extorcyon and robbery. They vexe the poore and nedye and oppresse the straunger agaynste ryghte.

⁷ Ye turne the lawe to worm wode, and caste doune ryghtuousnes vnto the grounde. ⁸ The Lorde maketh the seuen starres and the Dryons, he turneth the nighte into daye, and of the daye he maketh darcknesse. He calleth the waters of the sea, and poureth them oute vpon the playne grounde: the Lorde is hys name: ⁹ He rayseth destruccyon vpon the myghty people, and bringeth doune the stronge hold: ¹⁰ but they owe hym euill wil, that reproueth them openly, and who so telleth them the playn truth they abhorre hi ¹¹ For so muche then as ye oppresse the poore, & robbe him of his best sustenaunce: therfore, where as ye haue buylded houses of square stone, ye shall not dwel in them. Maruelous pleasaunt vyneyardes shal ye plante, but the wyne of them shall ye not drynck: and why? ¹² as for the multitude of your wickednesses and your stout synnes, I know them ryghte well. Euemyes are ye of the ryghtuous, ye take rewardes, ye oppresse the poore in iudgement.

¹ O wo vnto them, that Imagyn to do harme, & deuyse vngracyousnesse vpon their beddes, to perfourme it in the cleare daye: for there power is agaynst God. ² When they couet to haue lande, they take it by vyolence, they robbe men of their houses. Thus they oppresse a man for his house, & euery man for hys heretage.

³ yet they saye: they do well, when they do euil. As the prince wyll, so sayeth the iudge: that he maye do him a pleasure agayne. The greate man speaketh what his herte desyreth: & the hearers alowe hym.

¹⁰ Do the widdow, the fatherlesse, the straunger, and poore no wronge: and let no man ymagen euil against his brother in his hert.

⁵ I wil come and punish you, and I my selfe will be a swyf wytnes against the witches, agaynst the aduouterers, agaynste false swearers: yea, and agaynst those, that wrongeouslye kepe backe the hyrelinges dewtye: which vexe the widdowes and the fatherlesse and oppresse the straunger, and feare not me, sayeth the Lord of Hostes.

¹⁴ The souldioures lykewyse demaunded of him saiynge: and what shall we do? And he sayde to them: Do violence to no man: neither trouble any man wrongfullye: but be content with your wages.

⁶ But ye haue despysed the pore. Are not the ryche they whiche oppresse you: and they which drawe you before iudges?
