¹ Nabuchodonosor the kynge caused a golden Image to be made whiche was .lx. cubytes hye, & sixe cubytes thycke. This he made to be set vp in the feld of Dura in the lande of Babylon, ² and sent out to gather together the dukes, lordes and nobles, the iudges and offycers, the debytes, & shreues, with all the rulers of the lande, that they mighte come to the dedicacyon of the Image whiche Nabuchodonosor the kynge had set vp. ³ So the dukes, lordes and nobles, the iudges and offycers, debytes and shreues with all the rulers of the land gathered them together, and came vnto the dedycatynge of the Image, that Nabuchodonosor the kynge had set vp. Now when they stode before the Image, whiche Nabuchodonosor set vp, ⁴ the bedel cryed out with al his might: O ye people, kynredes and tunges, to you be it sayde: ⁵ that when ye heare the noyse of the trompettes, whiche shalbe blowen, wyth the harpes, shawmes, Psalteryes, Symphonyes and all maner of Musick: ye fall doune and worshyp ye the golden Image, that Nabuchodonosor the kynge hath set vp. ⁶ Who so then falleth not downe & boweth hym selfe, shall euen the same houre be caste into an hote burnynge ouen. ⁷ Therfor when all the folcke hearde the noyse of the trompettes that were blowen, with the harpes, shawmes, Psalteryes, Simphonyes and all kynde of Melody: then all the people, kynredes and nacyons fell doune, and bowed them selues vnto the golden Image, that Nabuchodonosor the kynge had set vp. ⁸ Now were there certayne men of the Caldees, that wente euen then, and accused the Iewes, ⁹ and sayde vnto the kynge Nabuchodonosor: O kyng, God saue thy lyfe for euer. ¹⁰ Thou beynge kynge, haste geuen a commaundement, that all men when they heare noyse of the trompettes, harpes, shawmes, psalteryes, symphonyes and all the other melodyes: shall fall downe, and bowe them selues towarde the golden Image: ¹¹ who so then fel not doune, and worshypped not, that he shulde be caste into an hote burnynge ouen. ¹² Now are there certayne Iewes, whome thou haste set ouer the offyces of the lande of Babylon, namely, Sydrach, Mysach & Abednago. These men (O kynge) regarde not thy commaundement, yea they wyll not serue thy Goddes, nor bowe them selues to the golden Image, that thou haste set vp. ¹³ Then Nabuchodonosor in a cruell wrathe, and displeasur, commaunded that Sidrach, Misach and Abednago shulde be broughte vnto hym. So these men were broughte before the kynge. ¹⁴ Then Nabuchodonosor spake vnto them, and sayde: what? O Sidrach Misach and Abednago, wyll not ye serue my Goddes, nor bowe youre selues to the golden Image, that I haue set vp? ¹⁵ well, be readye here after, when ye heare the noyse of the trompettes blowe wyth the harpes, shawmes, psalteryes, symphonyes and all the other melodyes: that ye fall doune, and worshyppe the Image whiche I haue made. But yf ye worshyppe it not, ye shall be caste immedyatly into an hote burnynge ouen. Let se, what God is there, that maye delyuer you oute of my handes? ¹⁶ Sidrach, Misach and Abednago aunswered the kynge, and sayde: O Nabuchodonosor, we oughte not to consente vnto the in this matter, for why: ¹⁷ oure GOD whome we serue, is able to kepe vs from the hote burnynge ouen (O kynge) and can right well delyuer vs oute of thy handes. ¹⁸ And thoughe he wyll not, yet shalte thou knowe (O kynge) that we wil not serue thy Goddes, nor do reuerence to the Image, whiche thou haste set vp. ¹⁹ Then was Nabuchodonosor full of indignacyon, so that the countenaunce of hys face chaunged vpon Sidrach, Misach, and Abednago. Therfor he charged and commaunded, that the ouen shuld be made seuen tymes hoter, then it was wonte to be, ²⁰ and spake vnto the strongeste worthyes that were in hys hoste, for to bynde Sidrach, Misach and Abednago, & to cast them into the hote burnynge ouen. ²¹ So these men were bounde in theyr cotes hosen, shues with theyr other garmentes, and caste into the hote burnynge ouen: ²² for the kynges commaundemente was so strate, and the ouen was exceadynge hote. As for the men that put in Sydrach, Mysach & Abednago, the flamme of the fyre destroyed them. ²³ And these thre men Sidrach, Misah & Abednago fell doune in the hote burnynge ouen, beinge fast bound. ²⁴ Then Nabuchodonosor the kyng marueyled, & stode vp in al haste: he spake vnto hys councell, and sayde: dyd not ye caste these thre men bounde into the fyre? They aunswered, and sayde vnto the kynge: Yea O kynge. ²⁵ He aunswered and sayde: lo, for all that, yet do I se foure men goynge lowse in the myddeste of the fyre, and nothynge corrupte: and the fourthe is lyke an angell to loke vpon. ²⁶ Vpon thys wente Nabuchodonosor vnto the mouth of the hote burnynge ouen: he spake also, and sayde: O Sydrach, Mysach & Abednago, ye seruauntes of the hye God: go forthe, & come hyther. And so Sydrach, Mysach, and Abednago wente oute of the fyre. ²⁷ Then the dukes lordes and nobles, and the kynges councell came together to se these men, vpon whom the fyre had no maner of power in theyr bodyes: In so much that the very hearre of theyr head was not burnte, & theyr clothes vnchaunged: Yea there was no smel of fyre felt vpon them. ²⁸ Then spake Nabuchodonosor, and sayde: Blessed be the God of Sidrach, Misach and Abednago, whiche hath sente his aungel, & defended hys seruauntes, that put their trust in him: that haue altered the kynges commaundement: and yeoparde theyr bodyes thervpon, rather then they wolde serue or worshyp any other God, excepte theyr owne God onelye. ²⁹ Therfore I wyll, and commaund, that al people, kynredes and tunges, whiche speake any blasphemye agaynst the God of Sidrach, Misach and Abednago, shall dye, and theyr houses shalbe prysed: Because there is no God that maye saue, as thys. ³⁰ So the kynge promoted Sidrach, Misach, and Abednago, in the land of Babylon.

²³ Then the Lordes of the Philistines gathered them together, for to offer a solempne offringe vnto Dagon their God, and to reioice: for they sayd, our God hath deliuered Samson oure enemie into oure handes.

But Dauid auoyded out of hys presence two times.

³⁵ what God of any land hath deliuered his lande out of mine hand, that the lorde shoulde delyuer Ierusalem out of myne hande.

¹⁷ But of a truthe Lorde, the kynges of Assiria haue destroyed nacyons and their landes, ¹⁸ and haue set fyre on their Goddes. For they were no Goddes, but the worke of the handes of man, euen wood and stone. And therfore they destroyed them. ¹⁹ Nowe therfore Lorde our God, saue thou vs oute of his hande, that all the kingdomes of the earth may knowe, that thou Lorde art God alone.

²⁷ I wote where thou dwellest, and thy cominge out and goyinge in know I to, and howe thou settest vp thy brystelles agaynste me. ²⁸ And because thou settest vp thy bristelles against me, and that thy raginge is come vp to myne eares: therfore I wil put a rynge in thy nose and a byt in thy lyppes, and wyll brynge the backe agayne the same way thou camest.

²⁰ And they were holpe agaynst them, and the Hagarites were delyuered into theyr handes with all that were wyth the Hagarites. For they cryed to God in the battell, and he hearde them, because they trusted to hym.

¹⁶ And Dauid spake to the chefe heades of the Leuites, that they should appoynte of theyr brethren to synge wt instrumentes of musycke psalteries, harpes & symbales that sounded, and to synge on hye with Ioyfulnesse.

²⁸ And al Israel brought the Arcke of the Lordes couenaunt wyth shoutynge and blowynge of hornes, & with trompettes and symbales that sounded, and wyth psalteries and harpes.

⁵ euen Asaph the chefe, and next to him Zachariah then Ieiel, Semiramoth, Iehiel, Mathathiah, Eliab, Banaiah, Obed Edom, and Ieiel with Psalteries & Harpes. But Asaph wyth soundynge symbales ⁶ and Banaiah and Iahaziel pryestes wyth trompettes contynuallye before the Arcke of the couenaunt of God.

¹ And Dauid and the captaines of the hoste appoynted out to do seruice, the sonnes of Asaph of Heman and Iduthun, whiche dyd prophesie with harpes psalteries & symbales: & the multytude of them were men to do seruyce in their offices. ² The sonnes of Asaph: Zaur, Ioseph, Nathaniah, Aserealah, to wayte on Asaph, whyche prophesyed by the kynge. ³ The sonnes of Iduthun: Godoliah, Zuri, Isaiah, Rasabiah and Mathathiah, Semei, syxe, at the handes of their fathers Iduthun wyth harpes: which Iduthun prophesyed for to thanke and prayse the Lord. ⁴ The sonnes of Heman: Bokiahu, Mathaniah, Vziel, Zubuell, Ierimoth, Hananiah, Hanam, Eliathat, Gedalthi, Romanthi Ezer, Iesbokasah, Malothi, Hothir and Mahazioth. ⁵ All these were the sonnes of Heman the kynges Sear of vysions with the worde of God, to lyfte vp the horne. God gaue to Heman .xiiij. sonnes, and thre doughters. ⁶ All these were at the hande of their father to synge in the house of the lord with symbales, psalteries, and harpes in the seruyce of the house of God. And at the hand of the king was Asaph, Iduthun and Heman.

²⁰ And so they arose erlye in the mornyng, and get them out vnto the wyldernesse of Tekua. And as they went out, Iehosaphat stode and sayde: heare me Iuda, and ye enhabyters of Ierusalem. Beleue in the Lorde youre God, and so shall ye continue: and beleue his prophetes & so shall ye prospere.

¹⁵ Wherfore now lett not Hezekiah deceyue you ether perswade you of thys fashyon, nor yet beleue hym. For as no God amonge so manye nacyons and kyngdomes, was able to rydde hys people out of myne hande & the hande of my fathers: euen so moche lesse shall youre God kepe you oute of myne hande. ¹⁶ And yet moare dyd his seruauntes speake agaynst the Lorde God and agaynst his seruaunt Hezekiah. ¹⁷ And therto he wrote a letter to raile on the Lorde God of Israel & spake therin sayinge: as the Gods of the nacyons of other landes haue not delyuered theyr people out of myne hande, no moare shall the God of Hezekiah delyuer hys people out of myne hande.

²¹ And the Lorde sent an angell & destroyed all the men of warre and the Lordes & capitaynes of the hoste of the kyng of Assur, that he turned hys face wyth shame towarde hys owne lande. And when he was come into the house of his God, he was there ouerthrowen wyth the swerde euen by them that issued oute of hys bowelles.

³ Whosoeuer now amonge you is of hys people, the Lord his God be with him, & let him go vp to Ierusalem in Iuda, and buylde the house of the Lorde God of Israell. He is the God that is at Ierusalem.

Therfore sent we out, & caused the kynge to be certyfyed therof. ¹⁵ That it maye be soughte in the Chronycles of thy progenitours, and so shalte thou fynde in the same Chronycles, & perceyue, that thys cytye is sedicious & noysome vnto kinges & landes, & that they cause other also to rebell of olde, & for the same cause was this cyty destroyed. ¹⁶ Therfore do we certyfy the king, that yf this citie be buylded, and the walles therof made vp, thou shalt kepe nothynge on this syde the water by the reason of it.

¹¹ But they answered vs with these wordes, and sayd: We are the seruauntes of the God of heauen and earth, & buylde the house that was buylded many yeares a go whyche a greate kynge of Israel buylded and set vp.

Who hath made those thynges, whyche come out by so greate heapes? And he can call them all by their names. For there is nothynge hyd vnto the greatnesse of his power, strength, and myght. ²⁷ How maye then Iacob thyncke, or how maye Israel saye: My wayes are hyd from the Lorde, and my God knoweth not of my iudgementes. ²⁸ Knowest thou not, or hast thou not hearde, that the euerlastynge God the Lorde whiche made all the corners of the earth, is nether weery nor faynt, & that his wysdome can not be comprehended, ²⁹ but that he geueth strength vnto the weery, and power vnto the faynte? ³⁰ Chyldren are weery and faynt, and the strongest men fall: ³¹ But vnto them that haue the Lorde before their eyes, shal strength be encreased, Aegles wynges shall growe vpon them: When they runne they shall not fal: and when they go, they shal not be weery.

And though there growe but lytle frute because of drouth, yet is he not carefull, but he neuer leaueth of to brynge forth fruite.

I magnifyed and praysed hym that lyueth for euermore, whose power endureth alwaye, and his kingdome from one generacion to another: ³⁵ in comparison of whom al they that dwel vpon the earth, are to be reputed as nothinge. He handleth accordinge to hys wyl, among the powers of heauen & amonge the inhabytours of the earthe: and there is none that maye resyste hys hande, or say: what doest thou?

For we were greued out of measure passinge strength, so greatlye that we despeared euen of lyfe. ⁹ Also we receiued and aunswere of death in our selues, and that because we woulde not put oure truste in oure selues: but in God, whiche rayseth the dead to lyfe again, ¹⁰ & which delyuered vs from so greate a death, and doth delyuer. On whom we truste that yet here after he will delyuer,

¹⁷ For oure excedynge trybulation whiche is momentanye and lyghte, prepareth an excedynge and eternall wayghte of glory vnto vs,

³ For it is sufficient for vs, that we haue spent the time that is past of the lyfe, after the wil of the Gentiles, walking in wantonnes, lustes, dronckennes, in eatinge, drinkinge & in abominable Idolatrie. ⁴ And it semeth to them a straunge thynge, that ye runne not also with them vnto the same excesse of riote, and therfore speake they euyl of you,

¹² Dearely beloued, be not troubled in hys heate, whiche nowe is come amonge you to trye you as though some straunge thing had happened vnto you: ¹³ but reioice in as much as ye are partakers of Christes passions, that when his glory appereth, ye maye be mery and glad.
