¹ If you will return, O Israel, says Jehovah, if you will return to me and if you will put away your abominations out of my sight, then you will not be removed. ² And you will swear, As Jehovah lives, in truth, in justice and in righteousness. And the nations will bless themselves in him and in him they will glory.
³ For Jehovah says thus to the men of Judah and to Jerusalem, Break up your* tillable ground and sow not among thorns. ⁴ Circumcise yourselves to Jehovah and take away the foreskins of your* heart, you* men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, lest my wrath go forth like fire and burn so that none can quench it, because of the evil of your* practices.
⁵ Declare in Judah and proclaim in Jerusalem and say, Blow the trumpet in the land. Cry aloud and say, Assemble yourselves and let us go into the fortified cities. ⁶ Set up a standard toward Zion. Flee for safety, do not stay. For I will bring evil from the north and a great destruction.
⁷ A lion has gone up from his thicket and a destroyer of nations. He is on his way, he has gone forth from his place, to make your land desolate, that your cities be laid waste, without inhabitant. ⁸ For this gird you* with sackcloth, lament and wail, for the fierce anger of Jehovah is not turned back from us.
⁹ And it will happen at that day, says Jehovah, that the heart of the king will perish and the heart of the rulers and the priests will be astonished and the prophets will wonder.
¹⁰ Then I said, Ah, lord Jehovah! Surely you have utterly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, You* will have peace, but the sword reaches to the life.
¹¹ At that time it will be said to this people and to Jerusalem, A hot wind from the bare heights in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to winnow, nor to cleanse, ¹² a full wind from these will come for me. Now I will also utter judgments against them. ¹³ Behold, he will come up as clouds and his chariots as the whirlwind. His horses are swifter than eagles. Woe to us! For we are ruined.
¹⁴ O Jerusalem, wash your heart from wickedness, that you may be saved. How long will your evil thoughts lodge within you?
¹⁵ For a voice declares from Dan and proclaims evil from the hills of Ephraim: ¹⁶ You* make mention to the nations. Behold, proclaim against Jerusalem, that watchers come from a far country and give out their voice against the cities of Judah. ¹⁷ They are as keepers of a field against her all around, because she has been rebellious against me, says Jehovah.
¹⁸ Your way and your practices have procured these things to you. This is your wickedness, for it is bitter, for it reaches to your heart.
¹⁹ My anguish, my anguish! I am pained at my very heart. My heart is in an uproar in me. I cannot hold my peace, because you have heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war. ²⁰ Destruction upon destruction is cried, for the whole land is laid waste. Suddenly my tents are destroyed and my curtains in a moment.
²¹ How long shall I see the standard and hear the sound of the trumpet? ²² For my people are foolish. They do not know me.
They are foolish sons and they have no understanding. They are wise to do evil, but they have no knowledge to do good.
²³ I beheld the earth, and behold, it was waste and void and the heavens and they had no light. ²⁴ I beheld the mountains, and behold, they trembled and all the hills moved to and fro. ²⁵ I beheld, and behold, there was no man and all the birds of the heavens were fled. ²⁶ I beheld, and behold, the fruitful field was a wilderness and all the cities of it were broken down at the presence of Jehovah and before his fierce anger.
²⁷ For Jehovah says thus: The whole land will be a desolation, yet I will not make a full end. ²⁸ For this the earth will mourn and the heavens above be black, because I have spoken it, I have purposed it and I have not relented, nor will I turn back from it. ²⁹ Every city flees for the noise of the horsemen and bowmen. They go into the thickets and climb up upon the rocks. Every city is forsaken and not a man dwells in it.
³⁰ And you, when you are made desolate, what will you do? Though you clothe yourself with scarlet, though you deck you with ornaments of gold, though you enlarge your eyes with paint, in vain you make yourself fair. Your lovers despise you, they seek your life.
³¹ For I have heard a voice as of a woman in travail, the anguish as of her who brings forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of Zion, who gasps for breath, who spreads her hands, saying, Woe is me now! For my soul faints before the murderers.

² Then Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, Put away the foreign gods that are among you* and purify yourselves and change your* garments.

¹⁵ Cursed be the man who makes a graven or molten image, an abomination to Jehovah, the work of the hands of the craftsman and sets it up in secret. And all the people will answer and say, Truly.

¹⁴ Now therefore fear Jehovah and serve him in sincerity and in truth. And put away the gods which your* fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt and serve you* Jehovah.

¹⁶ And they put away the foreign gods from among them and served Jehovah. And his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.

³ And Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, If you* do return to Jehovah with all your* heart, then put away the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you* and direct your* hearts to Jehovah and serve him only. And he will deliver you* out of the hand of the Philistines.

¹³ And the king defiled the high places that were before Jerusalem, which were on the right hand of the mountain of corruption, which Solomon the King of Israel had built for Ashtoreth the abomination of the Sidonians and for Chemosh the abomination of Moab and for Milcom the abomination of the sons of Ammon.

²⁴ Moreover Josiah put away the psychics and the wizards and the household-idol and the idols and all the abominations that were seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, that he might perform the words of the law which were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in the house of Jehovah.

⁸ And when Asa heard these words and the prophecy of Oded the prophet, he took courage and put away the abominations out of all the land of Judah and Benjamin and out of the cities which he had taken from the hill-country of Ephraim. And he renewed the altar of Jehovah, that was before the porch of Jehovah.

⁸ neither will I any more remove the foot of Israel from the land which I have appointed for your* fathers, if only they will observe to do all that I have commanded them, even all the law and the statutes and the ordinances given by Moses.

⁶ Turn to him from whom you* have deeply revolted, O sons of Israel.

¹ They say, If a man puts away his wife and she goes from him and become another man's, will he return to her again? Will not that land be greatly polluted? But you have played the prostitute with many lovers. Yet return again to me, says Jehovah.

¹² Go and proclaim these words toward the north and say, Return, you backsliding Israel, says Jehovah, I will not look in anger upon you*, for I am merciful, says Jehovah. I will not keep anger everlasting.

¹⁴ Return, O backsliding sons, says Jehovah, for I am a husband to you*. And I will take you*, one of a city and two of a family and I will bring you* to Zion.

²² Return, you* backsliding sons, I will heal your* backslidings. Behold, we have come to you, for you are Jehovah our God.

⁴ Circumcise yourselves to Jehovah and take away the foreskins of your* heart, you* men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, lest my wrath go forth like fire and burn so that none can quench it, because of the evil of your* practices.

⁴ And I will cause them to be tossed to and fro among all the kingdoms of the earth, because of Manasseh, the son of Hezekiah, king of Judah, for what he did in Jerusalem.

³ Jehovah says thus: Execute you* justice and righteousness. And deliver he who is robbed out of the hand of the oppressor. And do no wrong. Do no violence to the traveler, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place.
⁴ For if you* do this thing indeed, then there will enter in by the gates of this house kings sitting upon the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, he and his servants and his people.
⁵ But if you* will not hear these words, I swear by myself, says Jehovah, that this house will become a desolation.

⁹ I will even give them up to be tossed to and fro among all the kingdoms of the earth for evil, to be a reproach and a proverb, a taunt and a curse, in all places where I will drive them.

⁵ saying, Return now each one from his evil way and from the evil of your* practices and dwell in the land that Jehovah has given to you* and to your* fathers, from everlasting even to everlasting.

¹⁵ I have also sent to you* all my servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, saying, Return now every man from his evil way and amend your* practices and do not go after other gods to serve them and you* will dwell in the land which I have given to you* and to your* fathers. But you* have not inclined your* ear, nor listened to me.

³ It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I purpose to do to them, that they may return every man from his evil way, that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin.

¹⁸ And they will come there and they will take away from there all the detestable things of it and all the abominations of it.

¹³ has given forth upon interest and has taken increase, will he then live? He will not live. He has done all these abominations. He will surely die. His blood will be upon him.

⁷ And I said to them, Cast away every man the abominations of his eyes and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt. I am Jehovah your* God. ⁸ But they rebelled against me and would not listen to me. They did not every man cast away the abominations of their eyes, nor did they forsake the idols of Egypt. Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them, to accomplish my anger against them in the midst of the land of Egypt.

⁹ Now let them put away their prostitution and the dead bodies of their kings, far from me and I will dwell in the midst of them everlasting.

² Contend with your* mother. Contend, for she is not my wife, nor am I her husband. And let her put away her prostitutions from her face and her adulteries from between her breasts,

¹⁶ They return, but not to him on high. They are like a deceitful bow. Their rulers will fall by the sword for the rage of their tongue. This will be their scorning in the land of Egypt.

¹ O Israel, return to Jehovah your God, for you have fallen by your iniquity.

¹² Yet even now, says Jehovah, turn to me with all your* heart and with fasting and with weeping and with mourning.

²² to place away from yourselves the old man, according to your former conduct, the one who is corrupted according to the lusts of deception; ²³ and to be young again in the spirit of your mind, ²⁴ and to have clothed yourselves with the new man, who was created according to God, in righteousness and holiness of the truth.
²⁵ Hence, placing all the lying away from yourselves, speak, each one the truth with his neighbor, because we are members of one another. ²⁶ ‘Be angry and do not sin.’Do not let the sun set upon your anger, ²⁷ nor give a chance to the devil. ²⁸ Let the one who steals, steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working at what is the good thing with his hands, in order that he may have something to give to the one who has need. ²⁹ Do not let any rotten speech travel from your mouth. But if something is good for the building up of a need, do this in order that it may give a favor to those who are hearing. ³⁰ And do not make the Holy Spirit of God sorrowful, in whom you were sealed to the day of redemption. ³¹ Let all bitterness and fury and anger and outcrying and blasphemy, together with all malice, be taken away from you;

¹⁸ and in your seed will all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.

²⁰ You will fear Jehovah your God. Him you will serve and to him you will cling and by his name you will swear.

⁶ And Solomon said, You have shown to your servant David my father great loving kindness, just-as he walked before you in truth and in righteousness and in uprightness of heart with you. And you have kept for him this great loving kindness, that you have given him a son to sit on his throne as it is this day.

¹⁷ His name will endure everlasting. His name will be continued as long as the sun. And men will call him fortunate. All nations will call him fortunate.

⁴ The king’s strength also loves justice. You establish uprightness. You execute justice and righteousness in Jacob.

²³ I have sworn by myself, the word has gone forth from my mouth in righteousness and will not return, that to me every knee will bow, every tongue will confess to God.

²⁵ In Jehovah all the seed of Israel will be justified and will glory.

¹ Hear this, O house of Jacob, who are called by the name of Israel and have come forth out of the waters of Judah, who swear by the name of Jehovah and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness ² (for they call themselves of the holy city and steady themselves upon the God of Israel, Jehovah of hosts is his name):

¹⁶ so that he who graces himself in the earth will bless himself in the God of truth and he who swears in the earth will swear by the God of truth. Because the former troubles are forgotten and because they are hid from my eyes.

² And though they say, As Jehovah lives, surely they swear falsely.

²⁴ but let he who boasts boast in this, that he has understanding and knows me, that I am Jehovah who exercises loving kindness, justice and righteousness, in the earth. For in these things I delight, says Jehovah.

¹⁶ And it will happen, if they will diligently learn the ways of my people, to swear by my name, As Jehovah lives, even as they taught my people to swear by Baal, then they will be built up in the midst of my people.

¹⁹ And I will betroth you to me everlasting. Yes, I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice and in loving kindness and in mercies.

⁸ And I will bring them and they will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem. And they will be my people and I will be their God, in truth and in righteousness.

³¹ that, just-as it has been written, ‘He who boasts, let him boast in the Lord.’

¹⁷ But he who is boasting, let him boast in the Lord.

⁸ Now the Scripture foreseeing that God would make righteous the Gentiles from faith, proclaimed the good-news beforehand to Abraham, saying, ‘All the nations will be blessed in you.’

³ For we are the circumcision, who are giving-divine service in the spirit of God, and boast in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh;

¹⁸ Also, it will bring forth thorns and thistles to you and you will eat the herb of the field.

¹² Sow to yourselves in righteousness. Reap according to kindness. Break up your* tillable ground, for it is time to seek Jehovah, till he comes and rains righteousness upon you*.

⁷ Now others fell upon the thorns, and the thorns shot up and choked them.

²² And he who was sown among the thorns, this is he who hears the word, and the anxiety of this age and the deception of riches, choke the word and he becomes unfruitful.

⁷ And other seed fell among the thorns, and the thorns shot up and choked it, and it gave no fruit.

¹⁸ And these are those who are sown among the thorns; these are those who hear the word, ¹⁹ and the anxieties of this age, and the deception of riches, and the lusts concerning all the rest of the worldly things travel into their hearts, are choking the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

⁷ And other fell in the midst of the thorns, and the thorns sprang up together with it and choked it.

¹⁴ But what fell among the thorns, these are those who have heard, and while they are traveling on with life, they are choked by anxieties and riches and sensual-delights of this life, and they are not bringing themselves to maturity.

⁷ Do not be misled. God is not ridiculed; for whatever a man sows, he will also be reaping this thing. ⁸ Because he who is sowing to his own flesh will be reaping corruption from his flesh, but he who is sowing to the Spirit will be reaping everlasting life from the Spirit.

²⁸ then I will walk contrary to you* in wrath and I also will discipline you* seven times for your* sins.

¹⁶ Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your* heart and be no more stiff-necked.

⁶ And Jehovah your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your seed, to love Jehovah your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live.

²² For a fire is kindled in my anger and burns to the lowest Sheol and devours the earth with its increase and sets on fire the foundations of the mountains.

²⁷ Behold, the name of Jehovah comes from far, burning with his anger and in thick rising smoke. His lips are full of indignation and his tongue is as a devouring fire, ²⁸ and his breath is as an overflowing stream that reaches even to the neck, to sift the nations with the sieve of destruction. And a bridle that makes them go-astray will be in the jaws of the peoples.

¹⁷ Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, who have drunk at the hand of Jehovah the cup of his wrath. You have drunk the bowl of the cup of staggering and drained it.

²⁶ Egypt and Judah and Edom and the sons of Ammon and Moab and all who have the corners of their hair cut off, who dwell in the wilderness. For all the nations are uncircumcised and all the house of Israel are uncircumcised in heart.

⁵ And I myself will fight against you* with an outstretched hand and with a strong arm, even in anger and in wrath and in great indignation.

¹² O house of David, Jehovah says thus: Execute justice in the morning and deliver he who is robbed out of the hand of the oppressor, lest my wrath go forth like fire and burn so that none can quench it, because of the evil of your* practices.

¹⁹ Behold, the tempest of Jehovah, wrath, has gone forth, yes, a whirling tempest. It will burst upon the head of the wicked.

⁷ It may be they will present their supplication before Jehovah and will return each one from his evil way, for great is the anger and the wrath that Jehovah has pronounced against this people.

¹¹ Jehovah has accomplished his wrath. He has poured out his fierce anger and he has kindled a fire in Zion, which has devoured the foundations of it.

¹³ Thus my anger will be accomplished and I will cause my wrath toward them to rest and I will be comforted. And they will know that I, Jehovah, have spoken in my zeal, when I have accomplished my wrath upon them.
¹⁴ Moreover I will make you a desolation and a reproach among the nations that are all around you, in the sight of all who pass by.
¹⁵ So it will be a reproach and a taunt, a lesson and an astonishment, to the nations that are all around you, when I will execute judgments on you in anger and in wrath and in wrathful rebukes–I, Jehovah, have spoken it–

¹² He who is far off will die of the pestilence and he who is near will fall by the sword and he who remains and is besieged will die by the famine. Thus I will accomplish my wrath upon them.

¹⁸ Therefore I will also deal in wrath. My eye will not spare, nor will I have pity. And though they cry in my ears with a loud voice, yet I will not hear them.

³⁸ And I will judge you, as women who break wedlock and shed blood are judged. And I will bring upon you the blood of wrath and jealousy.

³¹ Cast away from you* all your* transgressions, by which you* have transgressed and make you* a new heart and a new spirit. For why will you* die, O house of Israel?

³³ As I live, says the lord Jehovah, surely with a mighty hand and with an outstretched arm and with wrath poured out, I will be king over you*.

⁴⁷ And say to the forest of the South, Hear the word of Jehovah. The lord Jehovah says thus: Behold, I will kindle a fire in you and it will devour every green tree in you and every dry tree. The flaming flame will not be quenched and all faces from the south to the north will be burnt by it. ⁴⁸ And all flesh will see that I, Jehovah, have kindled it. It will not be quenched.

¹⁷ I will also kill* my hands together and I will cause my wrath to rest. I, Jehovah, have spoken it.

⁸ That it may cause wrath to come up to take vengeance, I have set her blood upon the bare rock, that it should not be covered.

¹³ In your filthiness is lewdness. Because I have cleansed you and you were not cleansed, you will not be cleansed from your filthiness any more, till I have caused my wrath toward you to rest.

⁶ Seek Jehovah and you* will live, lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph and it devour and there is none to quench it in Bethel.

² before the decree bring forth, before the day passes as the chaff, before the fierce anger of Jehovah comes upon you*, before the day of Jehovah's anger comes upon you*.

⁴³ And if your hand offends you, cut it off. It is good for you to enter into life crippled, rather than having your two hands, and to go into hell, into the unquenchable fire, ⁴⁴ where a maggot of them is not dead and the fire is not quenched. ⁴⁵ And if your foot offends you, cut it off. It is good for you to enter into life lame, rather than having your two feet, and to be cast into hell, into the unquenchable fire, ⁴⁶ where a maggot is not dead and the fire is not quenched. ⁴⁷ And if your eye offends you, cast it out. It is good for you to enter into the kingdom of God one-eyed, rather than having two eyes, and to be cast into the hell of fire, ⁴⁸ where a maggot of them is not dying and the fire is not quenched. ⁴⁹ For everyone will be salted with fire and every sacrifice will be salted with salt. ⁵⁰ The salt is good, but if the salt has become non-salty, in what shall you season it? Have salt in yourselves and be at peace one with another.

²⁸ For he is not a Jew openly; nor is circumcision what is openly in the flesh, ²⁹ but he is a Jew in the hidden thing, and the circumcision is of the heart, in spirit, not in the writing; whose praise is not from men, but from God.

¹¹ in whom you were also circumcised with a circumcision not made with hands, in the stripping off of the body of the sins of the flesh, in the circumcision of the Christ,

²⁰ And it happened, when Joshua and the sons of Israel had made an end of killing them with a very great slaughter, till they were consumed and the remnant which remained of them had entered into the fortified cities,

²⁰ Declare this in the house of Jacob and proclaim it in Judah, saying,

¹ Flee for safety, you* sons of Benjamin, out of the midst of Jerusalem. And blow the trumpet in Tekoa and raise up a signal on Beth-haccherem. For evil looks forth from the north and a great destruction.

¹⁴ Why do we sit still? Assemble yourselves and let us enter into the fortified cities and let us be silent there. For Jehovah our God has put us to silence and given us water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against Jehovah.

¹² Who is the wise man, who may understand this and he to whom the mouth of Jehovah has spoken, that he may declare it? Why has the land perished and burned up like a wilderness, so that none passes through?

² Hear the words of this covenant and speak to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem,

¹¹ But it happened, when Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up into the land, that we said, Come and let us go to Jerusalem for fear of the army of the Chaldeans and for fear of the army of the Syrians. So we dwell at Jerusalem.

² Son of man, speak to the sons of your people and say to them, When I bring the sword upon a land and the people of the land take a man from among them and set him for their watchman, ³ if, when he sees the sword come upon the land, he blows the trumpet and warns the people, ⁴ then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet and takes no warning, if the sword comes and takes him away, his blood will be upon his own head.
⁵ He heard the sound of the trumpet and took no warning; his blood will be upon him. But if he had taken warning, he would have delivered his soul.
⁶ But if the watchman sees the sword come and does not blow the trumpet and the people are not warned and the sword comes and takes any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity, but I will require his blood at the watchman's hand.

¹ Set the trumpet to your mouth. As an eagle he comes against the house of Jehovah, because they have transgressed my covenant and trespassed against my law.

⁶ Shall the trumpet be blown in a city and the people not be afraid? Shall evil befall a city and Jehovah has not done it?

⁸ The lion has roared, who will not fear? The lord Jehovah has spoken, who can but prophesy?

¹⁰ Go through, go through the gates. Prepare you* the way of the people. Cast up, cast up the highway. Gather out the stones. Lift up an ensign for the peoples.

¹³ And the word of Jehovah came to me the second time, saying, What do you see? And I said, I see a boiling caldron and the face of it is from the north. ¹⁴ Then Jehovah said to me, Out of the north evil will break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land.
¹⁵ For behold, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north, says Jehovah. And they will come and they will set every one his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem and against all the walls of it all around and against all the cities of Judah.

²¹ How long shall I see the standard and hear the sound of the trumpet?

²² Jehovah says thus, Behold, a people comes from the north country and a great nation will be stirred up from the outermost parts of the earth.

⁷ And afterward, says Jehovah, I will deliver Zedekiah king of Judah and his servants and the people, even such as are left in this city from the pestilence, from the sword and from the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their life and he will kill* them with the edge of the sword. He will not spare them, nor have pity, nor have mercy.

⁹ behold, I will send and take all the families of the north, says Jehovah and Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant and will bring them against this land and against the inhabitants of it and against all these nations all around. And I will utterly destroy them and make them an astonishment and a hissing and everlasting desolations.

² Declare among the nations and proclaim and set up a standard, proclaim and conceal not. Say, Babylon is taken. Bel is put to shame. Merodach is dismayed. Her images are put to shame; her idols are dismayed.

²² A sound of battle is in the land and of great destruction.

¹² Set up a standard against the walls of Babylon. Make the watch strong. Set the watchmen. Prepare the ambushes. For Jehovah has both purposed and done what he spoke concerning the inhabitants of Babylon.

²⁷ Set up a standard in the land. Blow the trumpet among the nations. Prepare the nations against her. Call together against her the kingdoms of Ararat, Minni and Ashkenaz. Appoint a marshal against her. Cause the horses to come up as the rough canker-worm.

⁵⁴ The sound of a cry from Babylon and of great destruction from the land of the Chaldeans!

¹⁰ And in that day, says Jehovah, there will be the noise of a cry from the fish gate and a wailing from the second quarter and a great crashing from the hills.

¹ In his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up and Jehoiakim became his servant three years. Then he turned and rebelled against him.

¹ And it happened in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he and all his army, against Jerusalem and encamped against it. And they built forts against it all around.

⁷ Your* country is desolate. Your* cities are burned with fire. Your* land–strangers devour it in your* presence and it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers.

⁹ In my ears says Jehovah of hosts, of a truth many houses will be desolate, even great and fair, without inhabitant.

¹¹ Then I said, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until cities be waste without inhabitant and houses without man and the land become utterly waste,

¹⁵ The young lions have roared upon him and yelled and they have made his land waste. His cities are burned up, without inhabitant.

⁶ Therefore a lion out of the forest will kill them; a wolf of the evenings will destroy them; a leopard will watch against their cities. Everyone who goes out from there will be torn in pieces, because their transgressions are many and their backslidings are increased.

¹¹ And I will make Jerusalem heaps, a dwelling-place of jackals. And I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant.

³⁸ He has left his covering as the lion. For their land has become an astonishment because of the fierceness of the oppressing sword and because of his fierce anger.

⁹ Why have you prophesied in the name of Jehovah, saying, This house will be like Shiloh and this city will be desolate, without inhabitant?
And all the people were gathered to Jeremiah in the house of Jehovah.

⁸ And it will happen, that the nation and the kingdom which will not serve the same Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and that will not put their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, that nation I will punish, says Jehovah, with the sword and with the famine and with the pestilence, until I have consumed them by his hand.

¹⁰ Jehovah says thus: Yet again there will be heard in this place–of which you* say, It is waste, without man and without beast, even in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, that are desolate, without man and without inhabitant and without beast–

²² Behold, I will command, says Jehovah and cause them to return to this city. And they will fight against it and take it and burn it with fire. And I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant.

¹⁹ Behold, he will come up like a lion from the pride of the Jordan against the strong habitation. For I will suddenly make them run away from it. And he who is chosen, him I will appoint over it. For who is like me and who will appoint a time for me and who is the shepherd who will stand before me?

¹⁷ Israel is a hunted sheep, the lions have driven him away. First, the king of Assyria devoured him and now at last Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon has broken his bones.

⁴⁴ Behold, the enemy will come up like a lion from the pride of the Jordan against the strong habitation. For I will suddenly make them run away from it and he who is chosen, him I will appoint over it.
For who is like me and who will appoint a time for me and who is the shepherd who can stand before me?

¹⁹ Also, you son of man, appoint you two ways that the sword of the king of Babylon may come. Those two will come forth out of one land. And mark out a place. Mark it out at the head of the way to the city. ²⁰ You will appoint a way for the sword to come to Rabbah of the sons of Ammon and to Judah in Jerusalem the fortified.
²¹ For the king of Babylon stood at the parting of the way, at the head of the two ways, to use divination. He shook the arrows to and fro. He consulted the household-idol. He looked in the liver.

⁷ For thus says the lord Jehovah: Behold, I will bring upon Tyre, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, king of kings, from the north, with horses and with chariots and with horsemen and a company and many people.
⁸ He will kill your daughters in the field with the sword. And he will make forts against you and cast up a mound against you and raise up the buckler against you. ⁹ And he will set his battering engines against your walls and with his axes he will break down your towers.
¹⁰ Because of the abundance of his horses their dust will cover you. Your walls will shake at the noise of the horsemen and of the wagons and of the chariots, when he will enter into your gates, as men enter into a city in which a breach is made.

¹⁰ The lord Jehovah says thus: I will also make the multitude of Egypt to cease by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. ¹¹ He and his people with him, the terrible of the nations, will be brought in to destroy the land. And they will draw their swords against Egypt and fill the land with the slain.

¹⁹ And because of the greatness that he gave him, all the peoples, nations and languages trembled and feared before him. Whom he wanted, he killed and whom he wanted, he kept alive and whom he wanted, he raised up and whom he wanted, he put down.

⁴ The first was like a lion and had eagle's wings. I beheld till the wings of it were plucked and it was lifted up from the earth and made to stand upon two feet as a man and a man's heart was given to it.

⁴ And Jehovah said to Moses, Take all the chiefs of the people and hang them up to Jehovah before the sun, that the fierce anger of Jehovah may turn away from Israel.

⁴⁹ He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath and indignation and trouble, a discharge of messengers of evil.

²⁵ Therefore the anger of Jehovah is kindled against his people and he has stretched forth his hand against them and has struck them. And the mountains tremble and their dead bodies are as refuse in the midst of the streets.
For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

¹² the Syrians in front and the Philistines behind and they will devour Israel with open mouth.

¹⁷ Therefore the Lord will not rejoice over their young men, nor will he have compassion on their fatherless and widows. For everyone is profane and an evildoer and every mouth does senselessness.

²¹ Manasseh, Ephraim and Ephraim, Manasseh and together they will be against Judah.

⁴ They will only bow down under the prisoners and will fall under the slain.

⁶ Wail you*, for the day of Jehovah is at hand. It will come as destruction from the Almighty.

² They have gone up to the house and to Dibon, to the high places, to weep. Moab wails over Nebo and over Medeba. On all their heads is baldness. Every beard is cut off. ³ In their streets they gird themselves with sackcloth. On their housetops and in their broad places, everyone wails, weeping abundantly.

¹² And in that day the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, called for weeping and for mourning and for baldness and for girding with sackcloth.

¹¹ Tremble, women who are at ease. Be troubled, you* careless ones. Strip you* and make you* bare and gird sackcloth upon your* loins.

²⁶ O daughter of my people, gird with sackcloth and wallow yourself in ashes. You make mourning, as for an only son, a most bitter lamentation. For the destroyer will suddenly come upon us.

²⁴ The fierce anger of Jehovah will not return until he has executed and till he has performed the intents of his heart. In the latter days you* will understand it.

²⁰ Moab is put to shame, for it is broken down. Wail and cry, tell it by the Arnon, that Moab is laid waste.

¹² Cry and wail, son of man, for it is upon my people. It is upon all the rulers of Israel. They are delivered over to the sword with my people. Strike therefore upon your thigh.

² Son of man, prophesy and say, The lord Jehovah says thus: Wail you*, Alas for the day!

¹² Yet even now, says Jehovah, turn to me with all your* heart and with fasting and with weeping and with mourning. ¹³ And tear your* heart and not your* garments and turn to Jehovah your* God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abundant in loving kindness and relents of the evil.

¹⁰ And I will turn your* feasts into mourning and all your* songs into lamentation. And I will bring sackcloth upon all loins and baldness upon every head and I will make it as the mourning for an only son and the end of it as a bitter day.

³⁷ And it happened in the morning, when the wine had gone out of Nabal, that his wife told him these things and his heart died within him and he became as a stone. ³⁸ And it happened about ten days after, that Jehovah killed* Nabal, so that he died.

⁴ Then a breach was made in the city and all the men of war fled by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the king's garden (now the Chaldeans were against the city all around) and the king went by the way of the Arabah.

⁴ My heart is struck like grass and withered, because I forget to eat my bread.

³ And the spirit of Egypt will fail in the midst of it and I will destroy the counsel of it. And they will seek for the idols and for the charmers and for those who have familiar spirits and for the wizards.

¹¹ The rulers of Zoan are utterly foolish. The counsel of the wisest counselors of Pharaoh has become stupid. How will you* say to Pharaoh, I am the son of wise men, the son of long-ago kings? ¹² Where then are your wise men? And let them tell you now and let them know what Jehovah of hosts has purposed concerning Egypt.

¹⁶ In that day the Egyptians will be like women and they will tremble and fear because of the shaking of the hand of Jehovah of hosts, which he shakes over them.

³ Therefore my loins are filled with anguish. Pangs have taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman in travail. I am pained so that I cannot hear. I am dismayed so that I cannot see. ⁴ My heart wanders. Horror has frightened me. The twilight that I desired has been turned into trembling to me.

³ All your rulers fled away together. They were bound by the archers. All who were found of you were bound together; they fled afar off.
⁴ Therefore I said, Look away from me. I will weep bitterly. Labor not to comfort me for the destruction of the daughter of my people. ⁵ For it is a day of trouble and of treading down and of perplexity, from the Lord, Jehovah of hosts, in the valley of vision, a breaking down of the walls and a crying to the mountains.

⁹ Abide and wonder, take your* pleasure and be blind. They are drunken, but not with wine. They stagger, but not with strong drink. ¹⁰ For Jehovah has poured out upon you* the spirit of deep sleep and has closed your* eyes. The prophets and your* heads, the seers, he has covered.

³¹ The prophets prophesy falsely and the priests bear rule by their means. And my people love to have it so. And what will you* do in the end of it?

¹³ For from the least of them even to the greatest of them everyone is given to covetousness. And from the prophet even to the priest everyone deals falsely. ¹⁴ They have also lightly healed the hurt of my people, saying, Peace, peace, when there is no peace.

¹⁹ Where now are your* prophets who prophesied to you*, saying, The king of Babylon will not come against you*, nor against this land?

⁴ And it happened that, when Zedekiah the king of Judah and all the men of war saw them, then they fled and went forth out of the city by night, by the way of the king's garden, through the gate between the two walls and he went out toward the Arabah.
⁵ But the army of the Chaldeans pursued after them and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho. And when they had taken him, they brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath and he gave judgment upon him.

⁷ Then a breach was made in the city and all the men of war fled and went forth out of the city by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the king's garden, (now the Chaldeans were against the city all around) and they went toward the Arabah.

⁹ And my hand will be against the prophets who see false visions and who divine lies. They will not be in the council of my people, nor will they be written in the writing of the house of Israel, neither will they enter into the land of Israel.
And you* will know that I am the lord Jehovah.
¹⁰ Because, even because they have seduced my people, saying, Peace and there is no peace and when a man builds up a wall, behold, they daub it with untempered mortar, ¹¹ say to those who daub it with untempered mortar, that it will fall.
There will be an overflowing shower and you*, O great hailstones, will fall and a stormy wind will tear it. ¹² Behold, when the wall has fallen, will it not be said to you*, Where is the daubing with which you* have daubed it?
¹³ Therefore thus says the lord Jehovah: I will even tear it with a stormy wind in my wrath and there will be an overflowing shower in my anger and great hailstones in wrath to consume it.
¹⁴ So I will break down the wall that you* have daubed with untempered mortar and bring it down to the ground, so that the foundation of it will be uncovered. And it will fall and you* will be consumed in the midst of it.
And you* will know that I am Jehovah.
¹⁵ Thus I will accomplish my wrath upon the wall and upon those who have daubed it with untempered mortar. And I will say to you*, The wall is no more, nor those who daubed it, ¹⁶ namely, the prophets of Israel who prophesy concerning Jerusalem and who see visions of peace for her and there is no peace, says the lord Jehovah.

⁴¹ ‘You despisers, behold and marvel and disappear, because I am working a work in your days, a work which you may never believe, even if someone describes it to you.’

¹⁴ For this time I will send all my plagues upon your heart and upon your servants and upon your people, that you may know that there is none like me in all the earth.

²⁰ And Jehovah said, Who will entice Ahab, that he may go up and fall at Ramoth-gilead? And one said on this manner and another said on that manner.
²¹ And there came out a spirit and stood before Jehovah and said, I will entice him. ²² And Jehovah said to him, With what? And he said, I will go forth and will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets. And he said, You will entice him and will also prevail. Go forth and do so. ²³ Now therefore, behold, Jehovah has put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these your prophets and Jehovah has spoken evil concerning you.

¹⁰ who say to the seers, Do not see and to the prophets, Do not prophesy to us right things. Speak to us smooth things. Prophesy deceits.

³⁵ For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake and for my servant David's sake.

¹⁷ O Jehovah, why do you make us wander from your ways and harden our heart from your fear? Return for your servants' sake, the tribes of your inheritance.

⁶ Then I said, Ah, lord Jehovah! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am a child.

¹⁸ Your way and your practices have procured these things to you. This is your wickedness, for it is bitter, for it reaches to your heart.

¹² They have denied Jehovah and said, It is not he. Neither will evil come upon us, nor will we see sword nor famine.

¹⁴ They have also lightly healed the hurt of my people, saying, Peace, peace, when there is no peace.

¹³ Then I said, Ah, lord Jehovah! Behold, the prophets say to them, You* will not see the sword, nor will you* have famine, but I will give you* assured peace in this place.
¹⁴ Then Jehovah said to me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name. I did not send them, nor have I commanded them, nor did I speak to them. They prophesy to you* a lying vision and divination and a thing of nothing and the deceit of their own heart.

¹⁷ They say continually to those who despise me, Jehovah has said, You* will have peace. And to everyone who walks in the stubbornness of his own heart they say, No evil will come upon you*.

¹⁷ Ah lord Jehovah! Behold, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm. There is nothing too hard for you,

²¹ The youth and the old man lie on the ground in the streets. My virgins and my young men have fallen by the sword. You have slain them in the day of your anger. You have slaughtered and not pitied.

¹³ And it happened, when I prophesied, that Pelatiah the son of Benaiah died. Then I fell down upon my face and cried with a loud voice and said, Ah lord Jehovah! Will you make a full end of the remnant of Israel?

⁹ And if the prophet is deceived and speaks a word, I, Jehovah, have deceived that prophet. And I will stretch out my hand upon him and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel.
¹⁰ And they will bear their iniquity. The iniquity of the prophet will be even as the iniquity of him who seeks him,

²⁴ Hence also, God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts into uncleanness, that their bodies should be dishonored among themselves.

²⁶ Because of this, God gave them up to passions of dishonor; for even their females exchanged the natural use into what is contrary to anything natural;

²⁸ And just-as they did not approve to have God in their full knowledge, God gave them up to an unapproved mind, to do those things which are not proper.

⁹ even he, whose presence is according to the working of the Adversary in every power and in signs and in lying wonders, ¹⁰ and in all deception of unrighteousness in those who are perishing, because they did not accept the love of the truth, that they might be saved. ¹¹ And because of this, God will be sending them a working of error, that they may believe in the lie; ¹² in order that they all might be judged who did not believe the truth, but were delighted in unrighteousness.

⁴ Therefore I said, Look away from me. I will weep bitterly. Labor not to comfort me for the destruction of the daughter of my people.

⁸ In measure, in sending it forth, you contend with it. He has removed with his rough blast in the day of the east wind.

¹⁶ You will winnow them and the wind will carry them away and the whirlwind will scatter them. And you will rejoice in Jehovah. You will glory in the Holy One of Israel.

⁶ For we have all become as unclean and all our righteous acts are as a menstruation cloth. And we all fade as a leaf. And our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.

¹⁹ Behold, the voice of the cry of the daughter of my people from a land that is very far off: Is not Jehovah in Zion? Is not her King in her? Why have they provoked me to anger with their graven images and with foreign vanities?

¹ Oh that my head were waters and my eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!

⁷ Therefore Jehovah of hosts says thus: Behold, I will melt them and try them, for how else should I do, because of the daughter of my people?

¹⁷ And you will say this word to them: Let my eyes run down with tears night and day and do not let them cease. For the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous wound.

²³ Behold, the tempest of Jehovah–wrath–has gone forth, a sweeping tempest. It will burst upon the head of the wicked. ²⁴ The fierce anger of Jehovah will not return until he has executed and till he has performed the intents of his heart. In the latter days you* will understand it.

¹ Jehovah says thus: Behold, I will raise up against Babylon and against those who dwell in Leb-kamai, a destroying wind. ² And I will send strangers to Babylon, who will winnow her and they will empty her land. For in the day of trouble they will be against her all around.

¹¹ My eyes fail with tears, my heart is troubled, my liver is poured upon the earth, because of the destruction of the daughter of my people, because the young sons and the nursing-babes faint in the streets of the city.

⁴⁸ My eye runs down with streams of water, for the destruction of the daughter of my people.

³ Even the jackals draw out the breast; they give suck to their young ones. The daughter of my people has become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness.

⁶ For the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the sin of Sodom, that was overthrown as in a moment and no hands were laid upon her.

¹⁰ The hands of the pitiful women have boiled their own children. They were their food in the destruction of the daughter of my people.

¹⁰ Yes, behold, being planted, will it flourish? Shall it not utterly wither when the east wind touches it? It will wither in the beds where it grew.

¹² But it was plucked up in fury. It was cast down to the ground and the east wind dried up its fruit. Its strong twigs were broken off and withered. The fire consumed them.

³ Therefore they will be as the morning cloud and as the dew that passes away early, as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the threshing-floor and as the smoke out of the chimney.

¹⁵ Though he is fruitful among his brothers, an east wind will come, the breath of Jehovah coming up from the wilderness and his spring will become dry and his fountain will be dried up. He will make spoil of the treasure of all desirable vessels.

¹² whose winnowing fan is in his hand, and he will be thoroughly cleansing his threshing floor, and he will be gathering his grain into the barn, but the chaff he will be burning up with unquenchable fire.

¹⁶ And I will utter my judgments against them concerning all their wickedness, in that they have forsaken me and have burned incense to other gods and worshiped the works of their own hands.

⁸ therefore thus says the lord Jehovah: Behold, I, even I, am against you and I will execute judgments in the midst of you in the sight of the nations.

¹¹ The lord Jehovah says thus: Strike with your hand and stamp with your foot and say, Alas! because of all the evil abominations of the house of Israel, for they will fall by the sword, by the famine and by the pestilence. ¹² He who is far off will die of the pestilence and he who is near will fall by the sword and he who remains and is besieged will die by the famine. Thus I will accomplish my wrath upon them.
¹³ And you* will know that I am Jehovah, when their slain men will be among their idols all around their altars, upon every high hill, on all the tops of the mountains and under every green tree and under every thick oak, the places where they offered sweet aroma to all their idols.

⁸ Now I will shortly pour out my wrath upon you and accomplish my anger against you and will judge you according to your ways. And I will bring upon you all your abominations. ⁹ And my eye will not spare, nor will I have pity. I will bring upon you according to your ways. And your abominations will be in the midst of you.
And you* will know that I, Jehovah, do kill*.

⁴⁹ Jehovah will bring a nation against you from far, from the end of the earth, as the eagle flies, a nation whose tongue you will not understand,

²⁸ whose arrows are sharp and all their bows bent. Their horses' hoofs will be accounted as flint and their wheels as a whirlwind.

⁵ They come from a far country, from the outermost part of heaven, even Jehovah and the weapons of his indignation, to destroy the whole land.

¹ The burden of Egypt. Behold, Jehovah rides upon a swift cloud and comes to Egypt. And the idols of Egypt will tremble at his presence and the heart of Egypt will melt in the midst of it.

¹⁵ For, behold, Jehovah will come with fire and his chariots will be like the whirlwind, to render his anger with fierceness and his rebuke with flames of fire.

³¹ For I have heard a voice as of a woman in travail, the anguish as of her who brings forth her first child, the voice of the daughter of Zion, who gasps for breath, who spreads her hands, saying, Woe is me now! For my soul faints before the murderers.

¹⁹ Woe is me because of my hurt! My wound is grievous, but I said, Truly this is my grief and I must bear it.

¹⁹ Our pursuers were swifter than the eagles of the heavens. They chased us upon the mountains. They laid wait for us in the wilderness.

³ Jehovah is slow to anger and great in power and will by no means clear the guilty.
Jehovah has his way in the whirlwind and in the storm and the clouds are the dust of his feet.

³ The shield of his mighty men is made red. The valiant men are in scarlet. The chariots flash with steel in the day of his preparation and the cypress spears are brandished. ⁴ The chariots rage in the streets; they rush to and fro in the broad ways. The appearance of them is like torches. They run like the lightnings.

⁸ Their horses also are swifter than leopards and are more fierce than the evening wolves. And their horsemen press proudly on. Yes, their horsemen come from far. They fly as an eagle that hastens to devour.

³⁰ and then the sign of the Son of Man will be appearing in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will be grieving, and they will be seeing the Son of Man coming upon the clouds of heaven with power and with much glory.

⁷ Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will be seeing him and those who stabbed him, and all the tribes of the earth will be grieving over him. Yes he comes, Amen.

¹⁸ If I regard wickedness in my heart, the Lord will not hear.

¹¹³ I hate those who are of a double mind, but I love your law.

²² How long, you* simple ones, will you* love simplicity? And scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge?

¹⁶ Wash you*, make you* clean, put away the evil of your* practices from before my eyes. Cease to do evil. ¹⁷ Learn to do good. Seek justice, make the oppressed fortunate, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.
¹⁸ Come now and let us reason together, says Jehovah, though your* sins be as scarlet, they will be as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, they will be as wool.
¹⁹ If you* are willing and obedient, you* will eat the good of the land.

⁷ Let the wicked man forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts. And let him return to Jehovah and he will have mercy upon him and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

²⁷ I have seen your abominations, even your adulteries and your neighings, the lewdness of your prostitution, on the hills, in the field. Woe to you, O Jerusalem! You will not be made clean. How long will it yet be?

³³ Either make^*\'b0 the tree good and its fruit good; or make^*\'b0 the tree rotten and its fruit rotten; for the tree is known from its fruit.

¹⁹ For out of the heart comes forth evil reasonings, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimonies, blasphemies. ²⁰ These things are what desecrate the man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not desecrate the man.

²⁶ Blind Pharisee! First cleanse the cup from within and the plate, in order that the outside of them might also become clean.
²⁷ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you are similar to whitewashed burial chambers, which on the outside indeed appear beautiful, but inside are full of dead men’s bones, and full of all uncleanness.

³⁹ But the Lord said to him, Now you, the Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the platter, but the inside of you is full from swindling and wickedness.

²² Therefore repent from this, your malice, and beseech God; if, then, the deliberation of your heart will be forgiven to you.

²¹ because having known God, they did not glorify him as God, nor gave-thanks, but became-futile in their reasonings and their heart was darkened without understanding.

²⁰ and again, ‘The Lord knows the reasonings of the wise, that they are futile.’

⁸ Draw near to God and he will be drawing near to you. Cleanse your hands sinners and purify your hearts you indecisive!

¹⁵ And Joshua said to them, If you are a great people, get up to the forest and cut down for yourself there in the land of the Perizzites and of the Rephaim, since the hill-country of Ephraim is too narrow for you.

⁷ And they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hill-country of Naphtali and Shechem in the hill-country of Ephraim and Kiriath-arba (what is Hebron) in the hill-country of Judah.

²⁹ And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father who was born to Israel. However the name of the city was Laish at first.

¹ Then all the sons of Israel went out. And the congregation was assembled as one man, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, with the land of Gilead, to Jehovah at Mizpah.

¹⁶ The snorting of his horses is heard from Dan. At the sound of the neighing of his strong ones the whole land trembles. For they have come and have devoured the land and all that is in it, the city and those who dwell in it.

⁴⁹ Jehovah will bring a nation against you from far, from the end of the earth, as the eagle flies, a nation whose tongue you will not understand, ⁵⁰ a nation of fierce countenance, that will not regard the person of the old, nor show favor to the young, ⁵¹ and will eat the fruit of your cattle and the fruit of your ground, until you are destroyed, that also will not leave you grain, new wine, or oil, the increase of your cattle, or the young of your flock, until they have caused you to perish. ⁵² And they will besiege you in all your gates, until your high and fortified walls come down, in which you trusted, throughout all your land. And they will besiege you in all your gates throughout all your land, which Jehovah your God has given you.

¹ Come near, you* nations, to hear. And listen, peoples. Let the earth hear and the fullness of it, the world and all things that come out from it.

³ Then Isaiah the prophet came to king Hezekiah and said to him, What did these men say? And from where did they come to you? And Hezekiah said, They have come from a far country to me, even from Babylon.

¹⁷ They are as keepers of a field against her all around, because she has been rebellious against me, says Jehovah.

¹⁵ Behold, I will bring a nation upon you* from far, O house of Israel, says Jehovah. It is a mighty nation. It is an nation of old, a nation whose language you do not know, nor understand what they say.

¹⁸ Therefore hear, you* nations and know, O congregation, what is among them.

⁶ Both great and small will die in this land. They will not be buried, nor will men lament for them, nor cut themselves, nor make themselves bald for them,

¹⁰ Hear the word of Jehovah, O you* nations and declare it in the isles afar off and say, He who scattered Israel will gather him and keep him, as a shepherd does his flock.

¹ And it happened when Jerusalem was taken, in the ninth year of Zedekiah king of Judah, in the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and all his army came against Jerusalem and besieged it.

²² In his right hand was the divination for Jerusalem, to set battering rams, to open the mouth in the slaughter, to lift up the voice with shouting, to set battering rams against the gates, to cast up mounds, to build forts.

¹ And it happened in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he and all his army, against Jerusalem and encamped against it. And they built forts against it all around. ² So the city was besieged to the eleventh year of king Zedekiah. ³ On the ninth day of the fourth month the famine was severe in the city, so that there was no bread for the people of the land.
⁴ Then a breach was made in the city and all the men of war fled by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the king's garden (now the Chaldeans were against the city all around) and the king went by the way of the Arabah.

²⁶ Nevertheless they were disobedient and rebelled against you and cast your law behind their back and killed your prophets who testified against them to turn them again to you and they worked great provocations.

³⁰ Yet many years you prolonged with them and testified against them by your Spirit through your prophets. Yet they would not listen. Therefore you gave them into the hand of the peoples of the lands.

⁸ And the daughter of Zion is left as a booth in a vineyard, as a shed in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city.

²⁰ But if you* refuse and rebel, you* will be devoured with the sword, for the mouth of Jehovah has spoken it.
²¹ How the faithful city has become a prostitute! She who was full of justice! Righteousness lodged in her, but now murderers.
²² Your silver has become dross, your wine mixed with water. ²³ Your rulers are rebellious and companions of thieves. Everyone loves bribes and follows after rewards. They judge not the fatherless, nor does the cause of the widow come to them.

⁹ For it is a rebellious people, lying sons, sons who will not hear the law of Jehovah,

²³ But this people has a revolting and a rebellious heart. They have revolted and gone.

² The becoming one and delicate one, the daughter of Zion, I will cut off. ³ Shepherds with their flocks will come to her. They will pitch their tents against her all around. They will feed every one in his place.

⁸ Jerusalem has grievously sinned, therefore she has become as an unclean thing. All who honored her despise her, because they have seen her nakedness. Yes, she sighs and turns backward.

¹⁸ Jehovah is righteous, for I have rebelled against his commandment. Hear, I beseech you*, all you* peoples and behold my sorrow. My virgins and my young men have gone into captivity.

³ And he said to me, Son of man, I send you to the sons of Israel, to nations that are rebellious, which have rebelled against me. They and their fathers have transgressed against me even to this very day. ⁴ And the sons are impudent and stiff hearted.
I send you to them and you will say to them, The Lord says thus Jehovah. ⁵ And they, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear (for they are a rebellious house), yet will know that there has been a prophet among them.
⁶ And you, son of man, do not be afraid of them, nor be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns are with you and you dwell among scorpions. Do not be afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they are a rebellious house. ⁷ And you will speak my words to them, whether they will hear, or whether they will forbear, for they are most rebellious.

⁷ O Lord, righteousness belongs to you, but to us shame of face, as at this day, to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to all Israel, who are near and who are far off, through all the countries where you have driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against you.
⁸ O Lord, to us belongs shame of face, to our kings, to our rulers and to our fathers, because we have sinned against you. ⁹ To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgiveness, for we have rebelled against him, ¹⁰ nor have we obeyed the voice of Jehovah our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets. ¹¹ Yes, all Israel have transgressed your law, even turning aside, that they should not obey your voice. Therefore the curse has been poured out upon us and the oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God. For we have sinned against him. ¹² And he has confirmed his words, which he spoke against us and against our judges who judged us, by bringing upon us a great evil, for under the whole heaven has not been done as has been done upon Jerusalem.
¹³ As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil has come upon us. Yet we have not entreated the favor of Jehovah our God, that we should turn from our iniquities and have discernment in your truth.
¹⁴ Therefore Jehovah has watched over the evil and brought it upon us, for Jehovah our God is righteous in all his works which he does and we have not obeyed his voice.
¹⁵ And now, O Lord our God, who has brought your people forth out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand and has gotten you renown, as at this day, we have sinned, we have done wickedly.
¹⁶ O Lord, according to all your righteousness, I beseech you, let your anger and your wrath be turned away from your city Jerusalem, your holy mountain. Because for our sins and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and your people have become a reproach to all who are all around us.
¹⁷ Now therefore, O our God, listen to the prayer of your servant and to his supplications and cause your face to shine upon your sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord's sake. ¹⁸ O my God, incline your ear and hear. Open your eyes and behold our desolations and the city which is called by your name. For we do not present our supplications before you for our righteousness, but for your great mercies' sake.
¹⁹ O Lord, hear. O Lord, forgive. O Lord, listen and do. Defer not, for your own sake, O my God, because your city and your people are called by your name.

⁴³ Because the days will be coming upon you, and your enemies will put a military-barrier around you and will surround you, and will crowd you on every-side, ⁴⁴ and will be leveling you to the bedrock, and your children among you, and they will not be leaving in you one stone upon another stone, because you did not know the time of your visitation.

²⁰ But whenever you behold Jerusalem surrounded by encamped armies, then know that her desolation has drawn near. ²¹ Then those who are in Judea, let them flee to the mountains, and those who are in the midst of her, let them vacate, and those who are in the region, do not let them enter in it. ²² Because these are days of vengeance, that all things which have been written may be fulfilled. ²³ But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing in those days! For a great calamity will be upon the land, and wrath among this people. ²⁴ And they will be falling by the edge of the sword and will be captured into all the nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled on by the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles should be fulfilled.

⁵ that the triumphing of the wicked is short and the joy of the profane but for a moment? ⁶ Though his height mounts up to the heavens and his head reaches to the clouds, ⁷ yet he will perish forever like his own manure. Those who have seen him will say, Where is he? ⁸ He will fly away as a dream and will not be found. Yes, he will be chased away as a vision of the night. ⁹ The eye which saw him will see him no more, neither will his place any more behold him. ¹⁰ His sons will seek the favor of the poor and his hands will give back his wealth. ¹¹ His bones are full of his youth, but it will lie down with him in the dust.
¹² Though wickedness be sweet in his mouth, though he hide it under his tongue, ¹³ though he spares it and will not let it go, but keep it still within his mouth, ¹⁴ yet his food in his guts is turned. It is the gall of adders within him. ¹⁵ He has swallowed down riches and he will vomit them up again. God will cast them out of his belly. ¹⁶ He will suck the poison of adders. The viper's tongue will kill him.

¹⁷ Fools are afflicted because of their transgression and because of their iniquities.

³¹ Therefore they will eat of the fruit of their own way and be filled with their own devices.

²² His own iniquities will take a wicked man and he will be held with the cords of his sin.

¹ Jehovah says thus, Where is the document of your* mother's divorcement, with which I have put her away? Or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you*? Behold, for your* iniquities you* were sold and for your* transgressions your* mother was put away.

¹⁷ Have you not procured this to yourself, in that you have forsaken Jehovah your God when he led you by the way?

¹⁹ Your own wickedness will discipline you and your backslidings will reprove you. Know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and a bitter, that you have forsaken Jehovah your God and that my fear is not in you, says the Lord, Jehovah of hosts.

¹⁹ And it will happen, when you* will say, Why has Jehovah our God done all these things to us? Then you will say to them, Just as you* have forsaken me and served foreign gods in your* land, so you* will serve strangers in a land that is not yours*.

¹⁹ Hear, O earth: Behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not listened to my words. And as for my law, they have rejected it.

¹⁹ Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him to death? Did he not fear Jehovah and entreat the favor of Jehovah. And Jehovah relented of the evil which he had pronounced against them? Thus might we commit great evil against our own souls.

⁶ O my soul, do not come into their council, to their assembly, my glory, do not be united, because they killed* a man in their anger and they hocked an ox in their self-will.

⁹ And when you* go to war in your* land against the adversary that oppresses you*, then you* will shout out an alarm with the trumpets. And you* will be remembered before Jehovah your* God and you* will be saved from your* enemies.

²¹ The river Kishon swept them away, that ancient river, the river Kishon. O my soul, march on with strength.

² You, my soul, have said to Jehovah, You are my Lord. I have no good beyond you.

⁵ Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you in an uproar within me? Hope in God, because I will yet praise him for the help of his countenance.
⁶ O my God, my soul is cast down within me. Therefore I remember you from the land of the Jordan and the Hermons, from the hill Mizar.

¹ Praise Jehovah, O my soul and all that is within me, praise his holy name.

⁷ Return to your rest, O my soul, because Jehovah has dealt bountifully with you.

⁵³ Hot indignation has taken hold upon me because of the wicked who forsake your law.

¹³⁶ Streams of water run down my eyes, because they do not observe your law.

¹ Praise Jehovah.
Praise Jehovah, O my soul.

⁵ My heart cries out for Moab. Her nobles flee to Zoar, to Eglath-shelishiyah. For they go up with weeping by the ascent of Luhith. For they raise up a cry of destruction in the way of Horonaim.

¹¹ Therefore my heart roars like a harp for Moab and my inward parts for Kir-heres.

³ Therefore my loins are filled with anguish. Pangs have taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman in travail. I am pained so that I cannot hear. I am dismayed so that I cannot see.

⁵ Declare in Judah and proclaim in Jerusalem and say, Blow the trumpet in the land. Cry aloud and say, Assemble yourselves and let us go into the fortified cities.

¹⁰ For the mountains I will take up a weeping and wailing and for the pastures of the wilderness a lamentation, because they are burned up, so that none passes through, nor can men hear the voice of the cattle. Both the birds of the heavens and the beasts have fled; they are gone.

¹⁷ But if you* will not hear it, my soul will weep in secret for your* pride. And my eye will weep greatly and run down with tears, because Jehovah's flock is taken captive.

¹⁷ And you will say this word to them: Let my eyes run down with tears night and day and do not let them cease. For the virgin daughter of my people is broken with a great breach, with a very grievous wound.
¹⁸ If I go forth into the field, then, behold, the slain with the sword! And if I enter into the city, then, behold, those who are sick with famine! For both the prophet and the priest go about in the land and have no knowledge.

⁹ And if I say, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name, then there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones and I am weary with forbearing and I cannot.

⁹ Concerning the prophets: My heart within me is broken. All my bones shake. I am like a drunken man and like a man whom wine has overcome, because of Jehovah and because of his holy words.

³¹ Therefore I will wail for Moab, yes, I will cry out for all Moab. For they will mourn the men of Kir-heres. ³² With more than the weeping of Jazer I will weep for you, O vine of Sibmah. Your branches passed over the sea. They reached even to the sea of Jazer. The destroyer has fallen upon your summer fruits and upon your vintage.

¹⁶ For these things I weep. My eye, my eye runs down with water, because the comforter who should refresh my soul is far from me. My sons are desolate, because the enemy has prevailed.

⁴⁸ My eye runs down with streams of water, for the destruction of the daughter of my people. ⁴⁹ My eye pours down and does not cease, without any intermission, ⁵⁰ till Jehovah looks down and beholds from heaven. ⁵¹ My eye stirs my soul, because of all the daughters of my city.

¹⁵ As for me, Daniel, my spirit was grieved in the midst of my body and the visions of my head troubled me.

²⁸ Here is the end of the matter. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts troubled me much and my countenance was changed in me, but I kept the matter in my heart.

²⁷ And I, Daniel, fainted and was sick certain days. Then I rose up and did the king's business. And I wondered at the vision, but none understood it.

¹⁶ I heard and my body trembled. My lips quivered at the voice. Rottenness enters into my bones and I tremble in my place, because I must wait quietly for the day of trouble, for the coming up of the people who invade us.

¹⁵ That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of waste and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, ¹⁶ a day of the trumpet and alarm, against the fortified cities and against the high battlements.

⁴¹ And as he drew near, he saw the city and wept over it, ⁴² saying, If you had known in this day, even you, for-sure, the things which are for your peace! But now they were hidden from your eyes.

² that great sorrow is in me and constant anguish in my heart. ³ For I was praying for myself to be accursed from the Christ on behalf of my brethren, my relatives according to the flesh,

¹ Brethren, indeed the delight of my heart and my supplication to God on behalf of Israel, is for their salvation.

¹⁹ My little-children, of whom I am in travail again till whenever Christ has been formed in you.

⁵ And Jehovah said to Moses, Say to the sons of Israel, You* are a stiff-necked people. If I go up into the midst of you for one moment, I will consume you. Therefore now put off your ornaments from you, that I may know what to do to you.

¹⁸ And if for these things you* will not yet listen to me, then I will discipline you* seven times more for your* sins.

²¹ And if you* walk contrary to me and will not listen to me, I will bring seven times more plagues upon you* according to your* sins.

²⁴ then I also will walk contrary to you* and I will kill* you*, even I, seven times for your* sins.

²¹ Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.

⁴⁵ You* get up from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment. And they fell upon their faces.

⁷ Deep calls to deep at the voice of your waterfalls. All your waves and your billows have gone over me.

¹⁹ And praise his glorious name everlasting. And let the whole earth be filled with his glory. Truly and Truly.

²⁰ Look upon Zion, the city of our solemnities. Your eyes will see Jerusalem a quiet habitation, a tent that will not be removed. The stakes of which will never be plucked up, nor will any of the cords of it be broken.

⁹ But these two things will come to you in a moment in one day: the loss of sons and widowhood. In their full measure they will come upon you, in the multitude of your sorceries and the great abundance of your enchantments. For you have trusted in your wickedness. You have said, None sees me.

² Enlarge the place of your tent and let them stretch forth the curtains of your habitations. Spare not. Lengthen your cords and strengthen your stakes.

⁶ Set up a standard toward Zion. Flee for safety, do not stay. For I will bring evil from the north and a great destruction.

¹⁹ Woe is me because of my hurt! My wound is grievous, but I said, Truly this is my grief and I must bear it. ²⁰ My tent is destroyed and all my cords are broken. My sons have gone forth from me and they are not. There is none to spread my tent any more and to set up my curtains.

¹⁸ Let them be put to shame who persecute me, but do not let me be put to shame. Let them be dismayed, but do not let me be dismayed. Bring upon them the day of evil and destroy them with double destruction.

⁶ And he has taken away his tabernacle violently, as a garden. He has destroyed his place of assembly. Jehovah has caused solemn assembly and Sabbath to be forgotten in Zion. And in the indignation of his anger has despised the king and the priest.
⁷ The Lord has cast off his altar. He has spurned his sanctuary. He has given up the walls of her palaces into the hand of the enemy. They have made a noise in the house of Jehovah, as in the day of a solemn assembly.
⁸ Jehovah has purposed to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion. He has stretched out the line. He has not withdrawn his hand from destroying. And he has made the rampart and wall to lament, they languish together. ⁹ Her gates are sunk into the ground. He has destroyed and broken her bars. Her king and her rulers are among the nations where the law is not. Yes, her prophets find no vision from Jehovah.

⁴⁷ Fear and the pit have come upon us, devastation and destruction.

²⁵ Destruction comes. And they will seek peace and there will be none.
²⁶ Mischief will come upon mischief and rumor will be upon rumor.
And they will seek a vision of the prophet, but the law will perish from the priest and counsel from the elders.

²¹ For thus says the lord Jehovah: How much more when I send my four severe judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword and the famine and the evil beasts and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast!

¹⁵ Alas for the day! For the day of Jehovah is at hand and it will come as destruction from the Almighty.

⁷ I saw the tents of Cushan in affliction. The curtains of the land of Midian trembled.

²⁸ And do not be afraid of those who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul, but rather fear the one who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

⁹ who will be suffering-punishment, the sentence of everlasting utter-destruction away from the face of the Lord, and away from the glory of his strength,

²⁵ And Jeremiah lamented for Josiah. And all the singing men and singing women spoke of Josiah in their lamentations to this day. And they made them an ordinance in Israel, and behold, they are written in the lamentations.

³ And the King of Egypt deposed him at Jerusalem and fined the land a hundred talants of silver and a talant of gold.

⁶ Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against him and bound him in fetters to carry him to Babylon. ⁷ Nebuchadnezzar also carried of the vessels of the house of Jehovah to Babylon and put them in his temple at Babylon.

¹⁰ And at the return of the year king Nebuchadnezzar sent and brought him to Babylon, with the desirable vessels of the house of Jehovah and made Zedekiah his brother king over Judah and Jerusalem.

¹⁷ Therefore he brought upon them the king of the Chaldeans, who killed their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary and had no compassion upon young man or virgin, old man or hoary-headed. He gave them all into his hand.

¹⁹ My anguish, my anguish! I am pained at my very heart. My heart is in an uproar in me. I cannot hold my peace, because you have heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.

⁶ Do you* thus requite Jehovah, O foolish people and unwise? Is not he your father who has bought you? He has made you and established you.

²⁸ For they are a nation void of counsel and there is no understanding in them.

³ But Amnon had a friend whose name was Jonadab, the son of Shimeah, David's brother. And Jonadab was a very sly man.

²¹ And Ahithophel said to Absalom, Go in to your father's concubines that he has left to keep the house and all Israel will hear that you are a stink with your father. Then the hands of all who are with you will be strong.
²² So they spread Absalom a tent upon the top of the house and Absalom went in to his father's concubines in the sight of all Israel.
²³ And the counsel of Ahithophel, which he gave in those days, was as if a man inquired at the oracle of God; so was all the counsel of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom.

¹ The fool has said in his heart, There is no God.
They are corrupt. They have done abominable works. There is none that does good. ² Jehovah looked down from heaven upon the sons of men to see if there were any who understood, who sought after God. ³ They are all gone aside. They are morally-corrupt together. There is none who does good, no, not one.
⁴ Have all the workers of wickedness no knowledge, who eat up my people as they eat bread and do not call upon Jehovah?

³ The ox knows his owner and the donkey his master's crib, but Israel does not know; my people does not consider.

⁹ And he said, Go and tell this people, Hear indeed, but do not understand and see you* indeed, but do not perceive. ¹⁰ Make the heart of this people fat and make their ears heavy and shut their eyes, lest they see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn and be healed.

¹¹ When the limbs of it are withered, they will be broken off. The women will come and set them on fire, for it is a people of no understanding. Therefore he who made them will not have compassion upon them and he who formed them will show them no favor.

¹⁰ For Jehovah has poured out upon you* the spirit of deep sleep and has closed your* eyes. The prophets and your* heads, the seers, he has covered.
¹¹ And all vision has become to you* as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to a man who is learned, saying, Read this, I beseech you. And he says, I cannot, for it is sealed. ¹² And the book is delivered to him who is not learned, saying, Read this, I beseech you. And he says, I am not learned.

¹⁹ Who is blind, but my servant, or deaf, as my messenger that I send? Who is blind as he who is at peace with me and blind as Jehovah's servant? ²⁰ You see many things, but you do not observe. His ears are open, but he does not hear.

⁴ Then I said, Surely these are poor, they are foolish, for they do not know the way of Jehovah, nor the law of their God.

²¹ Hear now this, O foolish people and without understanding, who have eyes and do not see, who have ears and do not hear:

⁷ Yes, the stork in the heavens knows her appointed times and the turtledove and the swallow and the crane observe the time of their coming, but my people do not know the law of Jehovah.
⁸ How can you* say, We are wise and the law of Jehovah is with us? But, behold, the false pen of the scribes has worked falsely. ⁹ The wise men are put to shame. They are dismayed and taken. Behold, they have rejected the word of Jehovah and what manner of wisdom is in them?

⁸ But they are together stupid and foolish, the instruction of idols! It is but a block of wood.

²³ Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? Then you* also may do good, who are accustomed to do evil.

¹ Hear the word of Jehovah, you* sons of Israel, for Jehovah has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor goodness, nor knowledge of God in the land.

⁶ My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you, that you will be no priest to me. Since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your sons.

⁴ Their practices will not allow them to turn to their God, for the spirit of prostitution is within them and they do not know Jehovah.

¹ Woe to those who devise wickedness and work evil upon their beds! When the morning is light they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand.

¹⁶ Woe to you, you blind guides, that say, Whoever swears by the temple, it is nothing, but whoever swears by the gold of the temple, he is obligated. ¹⁷ You are foolish and blind; for which is greater, the gold, or the temple that makes the gold holy? ¹⁸ And, Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing, but whoever swears by the gift which is upon it, he is obligated. ¹⁹ You^\'b0 are foolish and blind; for which is greater, the gift, or the altar that makes the gift holy? ²⁰ Therefore, he who swears by the altar swears by it, and by all things upon it. ²¹ And he who swears by the temple, swears by it, and in the one who has dwelt in it. ²² And he who has sworn by the heaven, swears by the throne of God, and in the one who is sitting upon it.
²³ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and yet have left behind the weighty things of the law: justice and mercy and faith. You ought to do these, and not to have left behind those other things. ²⁴ You blind guides, who strain out the gnat and swallow the camel! ²⁵ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Because you cleanse the outside of the cup and the plate, but they are full from swindling and unrighteousness inside. ²⁶ Blind Pharisee! First cleanse the cup from within and the plate, in order that the outside of them might also become clean.

⁸ And his lord praised the steward of unrighteousness because he had done prudently, because the sons of this world are more prudent to their own generation; even beyond the sons of the light.

³ And they will be doing these things to you, because they have not known the Father, nor me.

²² They were foolish, claiming to be wise,

¹¹ No one is understanding. No one is seeking out God.

¹⁹ For your obedience has reached out to all men. Therefore I rejoice over you, but I wish for you to be indeed wise as to what is good, and harmless to what is evil.

²⁰ Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has God not made the wisdom of the world foolish? ²¹ For since, in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know God, it delighted God through the foolishness of the preaching to save those who believe.

²⁰ Brethren, do not become children in your mindsets, (but be infants in malice), but become mature in your mindsets.

² And the earth was without form and void and darkness was upon the face of the deep and the Spirit of God fluttered upon the face of the waters.

³⁰ And they will roar against them in that day like the roaring of the sea. And if a man looks to the land, behold, darkness and distress and the light is darkened in the clouds of it.

¹⁰ For the stars of heaven and the constellations of it will not give their light. The sun will be darkened in its going forth and the moon will not cause its light to shine.

¹⁹ The earth is utterly broken. The earth is torn apart. The earth is shaken violently. ²⁰ The earth will stagger like a drunken man and will sway to and fro like a hammock. And the transgression of it will be heavy upon it and it will fall and not rise again.
²¹ And it will happen in that day, that Jehovah will punish the host of the high ones on high and the kings of the earth upon the earth. ²² And they will be gathered together as prisoners are gathered in the pit and will be shut up in the prison. And after many days they will be visited.
²³ Then the moon will be confounded and the sun ashamed, for Jehovah of hosts will reign in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem. And glory will be before his elders.

⁷ And when I will extinguish you, I will cover the heavens and make the stars of it dark. I will cover the sun with a cloud and the moon will not give its light. ⁸ All the bright lights of heaven I will make dark over you and set darkness upon your land, says the lord Jehovah.

²⁹ But immediately after the affliction of those days, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not be giving her radiance, and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken;

³⁵ The heaven and the earth will be passing away, but my words may never pass away.

⁴ Jehovah, when you went forth out of Seir,
when you marched out of the field of Edom, the earth trembled, the heavens also dropped,
yes, the clouds dropped water. ⁵ The mountains flowed like lava at the presence of Jehovah, even
yon Sinai at the presence of Jehovah, the God of Israel.

¹¹ And he said, Go forth and stand upon the mountain before Jehovah. And behold, Jehovah passed by and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before Jehovah, but Jehovah was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but Jehovah was not in the earthquake.

⁷ Then the earth shook and trembled. The foundations also of the mountains quaked and were shaken because he was angry.

¹⁰ But Jehovah is the true God. He is the living God and an everlasting King. At his wrath the earth trembles and the nations are not able to abide his indignation.

²⁰ so that the fishes of the sea and the birds of the heavens and the beasts of the field and all creeping things that creep upon the earth and all the men who are upon the face of the earth, will shake at my presence. And the mountains will be thrown down and the steep places will fall and every wall will fall to the ground.

⁴ And the mountains will be melted under him and the valleys will be split, as wax before the fire, as waters that are poured down a steep place.
⁵ The mountains quake at him and the hills melt and the earth is upheaved at his presence. Yes, the world and all who dwell in it.
⁶ Who can stand before his indignation? And who can abide in the fierceness of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire and the rocks are broken apart by him.

⁶ He stood and measured the earth. He beheld and drove apart the nations. And the eternal mountains were scattered. The everlasting hills bowed. His traveling are everlasting.

¹⁰ The mountains saw you and were afraid. The tempest of waters passed by. The deep uttered its voice and lifted up its hands on high.

⁴ How long will the land mourn and the herbs of whole country wither? For the wickedness of those who dwell in it, the beasts are consumed and the birds, because they said, He will not see our latter end.

³ Therefore the land will mourn and everyone who dwells in it will languish with the beasts of the field and the birds of the heavens. Yes, the fishes of the sea will also be taken away.

² I will utterly consume all things from the face of the ground, says Jehovah. ³ I will consume man and beast. I will consume the birds of the heavens and the fishes of the sea and the stumbling blocks with the wicked. And I will cut off man from the face of the ground, says Jehovah.

²³ The whole land of it is brimstone and salt, a burning. It is not sown, nor bears, nor any grass grows in it, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which Jehovah overthrew in his anger and in his wrath, ²⁴ even all the nations will say, Why has Jehovah done thus to this land? What is the meaning of the heat of this great anger?
²⁵ Then men will say, Because they forsook the covenant of Jehovah, the God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, ²⁶ and went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods that they did not know and that he had not given to them. ²⁷ Therefore the anger of Jehovah was kindled against this land, to bring upon it all the curse that is written in this book. ²⁸ And Jehovah rooted them out of their land in anger and in wrath and in great indignation and cast them into another land, as at this day.

⁷ You, even you, are to be feared. And who may stand in your sight when once you are angry?

³⁴ a fruitful land into a salt desert, for the wickedness of those who dwell in it.

⁹ In my ears says Jehovah of hosts, of a truth many houses will be desolate, even great and fair, without inhabitant. ¹⁰ For ten acres of vineyard will yield one 9-gallon container and a homer of seed will yield but an ephah.

²⁰ In that day the Lord will shave with a razor what is hired in the parts beyond the River, even with the king of Assyria, the head and the hair of the feet and it will also consume the beard.
²¹ And it will happen in that day, that a man will keep alive a young cow and two sheep. ²² And it will happen, that because of the abundance of milk which they will give he will eat butter. For everyone who is left in the midst of the land will eat butter and honey.
²³ And it will happen in that day, that every place where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silver coins, will be for briers and thorns. ²⁴ Men will come there with arrows and with bow, because all the land will be briers and thorns. ²⁵ And all the hills that were dug with the mattock, you will not come there for fear of briers and thorns, but it will be for the sending forth of oxen and for the treading of sheep.

² Judah mourns and the gates of it languish. They sit in black upon the ground and the cry of Jerusalem has gone up. ³ And their ranking men send their little ones to the waters. They come to the cisterns and find no water. They return with their vessels empty. They are put to shame and confounded and cover their heads, ⁴ because of the ground which is cracked. Because no rain has been in the land, the plowmen are put to shame; they cover their heads. ⁵ Yes, the female-deer also in the field calves and forsakes it because there is no grass. ⁶ And the wild donkeys stand on the bare heights. They pant for air like jackals. Their eyes fail because there is no herbage.

¹² Therefore for your* sake Zion will be plowed as a field and Jerusalem will become heaps and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest.

⁴⁴ And yet for all that, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them, neither will I abhor them, to destroy them utterly and to break my covenant with them, for I am Jehovah their God,

²¹ to fulfill the word of Jehovah by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed its Sabbaths; as long as it lay desolate it kept Sabbath, to fulfill seventy years.

¹¹ Then I said, Lord, how long? And he answered, Until cities be waste without inhabitant and houses without man and the land become utterly waste, ¹² and Jehovah has removed men far away and the forsaken places be many in the midst of the land.

¹ Behold, Jehovah makes the earth empty and makes it waste and turns it upside down and scatters abroad the inhabitants of it.

³ The earth will be utterly emptied and utterly laid waste, for Jehovah has spoken this word. ⁴ The earth mourns and fades away. The world languishes and fades away. The lofty people of the earth languish.
⁵ The earth also is polluted under the inhabitants of it, because they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, broken the everlasting covenant.
⁶ Therefore the curse has devoured the earth and those who dwell in it are found guilty. Therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned and few men left. ⁷ The new wine mourns. The vine languishes. All the merry-hearted do sigh. ⁸ The joy of tambourine ceases. The noise of those who rejoice ends. The joy of the harp ceases. ⁹ They will not drink wine with a song. Strong drink will be bitter to those who drink it. ¹⁰ The waste city is broken down. Every house is shut up, that no man may come in. ¹¹ There is a crying in the streets because of the wine. All joy is darkened. The gladness of the land has gone. ¹² Desolation is left in the city and the gate is struck with destruction. ¹³ For thus it will be in the midst of the earth among the peoples, as the shaking of an olive tree, as the gleanings when the vintage is done.

⁷ A lion has gone up from his thicket and a destroyer of nations. He is on his way, he has gone forth from his place, to make your land desolate, that your cities be laid waste, without inhabitant.

¹⁰ Go up upon her walls and destroy, but make not a full end. Take away her branches, for they are not Jehovah's.

¹⁸ But even in those days, says Jehovah, I will not make a full end with you*.

³⁴ Then I will cause to cease from the cities of Judah and from the streets of Jerusalem, the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, for the land will become a waste.

¹¹ They have made it a desolation. It mourns to me, being desolate. The whole land is made desolate, because no man lays it to heart. ¹² Destroyers have come upon all the bare heights in the wilderness. For the sword of Jehovah devours from the one end of the land even to the other end of the land. No flesh has peace.

¹⁶ to make their land an astonishment and a everlasting hissing, everyone who passes by it will be astonished and shake his head.

¹¹ For I am with you, says Jehovah, to save you. For I will make a full end of all the nations where I have scattered you, but I will not make a full end of you. But I will discipline you in measure and will in no way leave you unpunished.

²⁸ Do not fear, O Jacob my servant, says Jehovah, for I am with you. For I will make a full end of all the nations where I have driven you, but I will not make a full end of you. But I will discipline you in measure and will in no way leave you unpunished.

¹⁴ And I will stretch out my hand upon them and make the land desolate and waste, from the wilderness toward Diblah, throughout all their habitations.
And they will know that I am Jehovah.

²⁸ And I will make the land a desolation and an astonishment. And the pride of her power will cease. And the mountains of Israel will be desolate, so that none will pass through.

⁸ Behold, the eyes of the lord Jehovah are upon the sinful kingdom and I will destroy it from the face of the earth, except that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, says Jehovah.
⁹ For behold, I will command and I will sift the house of Israel among all the nations, just as grain is sifted in a sieve, yet the least kernel will not fall upon the earth.

²⁷ Now Isaiah cries on behalf of Israel, ‘If the number of the sons of Israel is like the sand of the sea, only the remnant will be saved; ²⁸ for he is completing and cutting-short the word in righteousness because having been cut-short, the Lord will make the word upon the earth.’ ²⁹ And, just-as Isaiah has said before, ‘If the Lord of Hosts did not leave us a seed, we would have become like Sodom and would have been similar to Gomorrah.’

¹ Therefore I say, God has not thrust away his people, has he? Let it not happen! For I am also an Israelite, from the seed of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin. ² God did not thrust away his people which he knew beforehand. Or do you not know what the Scripture says by Elijah? How he petitions God against Israel, saying, ³ ‘Lord, they have killed your prophets and have made ruins of your altars, and I am left alone and they are seeking my life.’ ⁴ But what does the divine-answer say to him? ‘I have left to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to Baal.’ ⁵ Therefore so there has also become a remnant according to the chosen of grace in this current time. ⁶ But if it is by grace, it is no more from works, otherwise grace becomes grace no more. But if it is from works, no more is it grace; otherwise work is work no more. ⁷ Therefore what? What Israel is seeking after, it did not obtain this, but the chosen obtained it and the rest were hardened;

¹⁹ God is not a man, that he should lie, neither the son of man, that he should repent. Has he said and will he not do it? Or has he spoken and will he not make it good?

²⁹ And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent, for he is not a man that he should repent.

²⁴ Jehovah of hosts has sworn, saying, Surely, as I have thought, so will it happen and as I have purposed, so will it stand, ²⁵ that I will break the Assyrian in my land and tread him under foot upon my mountains. Then will his yoke depart from them and his burden depart from their shoulder.
²⁶ This is the purpose that is purposed upon the whole earth and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all the nations. ²⁷ For Jehovah of hosts has purposed and who will annul it? And his hand is stretched out and who will turn it back?

⁴ The earth mourns and fades away. The world languishes and fades away. The lofty people of the earth languish.

⁸ The highways lie waste. The wayfaring man ceases. The enemy has broken the covenant. He has despised the cities. He does not regard man. ⁹ The land mourns and languishes. Lebanon is confounded and withers away. Sharon is like a desert and Bashan and Carmel shake off their leaves.

⁴ And all the host of heaven will be dissolved and the heavens will be rolled together as a scroll. And all their host will fade away as the leaf fades from the vine and as a fading leaf from the fig tree.

¹⁰ declaring the end from the beginning and from long-ago things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel will stand and I will do all my pleasure, ¹¹ calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man of my counsel from a far country. Yes, I have spoken. I will also make it occur. I have purposed. I will also do it.

³ I clothe the heavens with blackness and I make sackcloth their covering.

²³ I beheld the earth, and behold, it was waste and void and the heavens and they had no light. ²⁴ I beheld the mountains, and behold, they trembled and all the hills moved to and fro. ²⁵ I beheld, and behold, there was no man and all the birds of the heavens were fled. ²⁶ I beheld, and behold, the fruitful field was a wilderness and all the cities of it were broken down at the presence of Jehovah and before his fierce anger.

¹⁶ Therefore pray you not for this people, nor lift up cry nor prayer for them. Neither make intercession to me, for I will not hear you.

¹¹ And Jehovah said to me, Pray not for this people for good. ¹² When they fast, I will not hear their cry. And when they offer burnt offering and meal offering, I will not accept them. But I will consume them by the sword and by the famine and by the pestilence.

¹ Then Jehovah said to me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind would not be toward this people. Cast them out of my sight and let them go forth.
² And it will happen, when they say to you, Where will we go forth? Then you will tell them, Jehovah says thus: Such as are for death, to death and such as are for the sword, to the sword and such as are for the famine, to the famine and such as are for captivity, to captivity.
³ And I will appoint over them four kinds, says Jehovah: the sword to kill and the dogs to tear and the birds of the heavens and the beasts of the earth, to devour and to destroy.
⁴ And I will cause them to be tossed to and fro among all the kingdoms of the earth, because of Manasseh, the son of Hezekiah, king of Judah, for what he did in Jerusalem. ⁵ For who will have pity upon you, O Jerusalem? Or who will sympathize with you? Or who will turn aside to ask of your welfare?
⁶ You have rejected me, says Jehovah. You have gone backward. Therefore I have stretched out my hand against you and destroyed you. I am weary with relenting.
⁷ And I have winnowed them with a fan in the gates of the land. I have bereaved them of sons. I have destroyed my people. They did not return from their ways. ⁸ Their widows have increased to me above the sand of the seas. I have brought upon them, against the mother of the young men, a destroyer at noonday. I have caused anguish and terrors to fall upon her suddenly.
⁹ She who has borne seven, languishes. She has given up the spirit. Her sun has gone down while it was yet day. She has been put to shame and confounded. And the residue of them I will deliver to the sword before their enemies, says Jehovah.

¹⁰ For the land is full of adulterers. For because of swearing the land mourns. The pastures of the wilderness are dried up. And their course is evil and their might is not right.

²⁰ The anger of Jehovah will not return until he has executed and till he has performed the intents of his heart. In the latter days you* will understand it perfectly.

¹⁴ I, Jehovah, have spoken it. It will happen and I will do it. I will not go back. I will neither spare, nor will I relent. According to your ways and according to your practices, they will judge you, says the lord Jehovah.

¹⁴ I will ransom them from the power of Sheol. I will redeem them from death. O death, where are your plagues? O Sheol, where is your sting? Repentance will be hid from my eyes.

¹⁰ The field is laid waste; the land mourns. For the grain is destroyed, the new wine is dried up, the oil languishes.

⁴⁵ Now there became darkness upon all the earth from the sixth hour until the ninth hour

³³ Now when it became the sixth hour, there became darkness over the whole earth until the ninth hour

⁹ having made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his delight which he purposed in him,

¹¹ In him in whom, we were also made an inheritance, having been predetermined according to the purpose of the one who is working all things after the plan of his will.

²¹ but he with an oath through the one who says pertaining to him, ‘ The Lord swore and will not regret, you are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.’

¹² And I saw when he opened the sixth seal and a great earthquake happened, and the sun became black like hairy sackcloth and the whole moon became like blood;

⁶ When the men of Israel saw that they were in a strait (for the people were distressed), then the people hid themselves in caves and in thickets and in rocks and in coverts and in pits.

⁴ Then a breach was made in the city and all the men of war fled by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the king's garden (now the Chaldeans were against the city all around) and the king went by the way of the Arabah. ⁵ But the army of the Chaldeans pursued after the king and overtook him in the plains of Jericho. And all his army was scattered from him.
⁶ Then they took the king and carried him up to the king of Babylon to Riblah. And they gave judgment upon him. ⁷ And they killed the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes and put out the eyes of Zedekiah and bound him in fetters and carried him to Babylon.

¹¹ Therefore Jehovah brought upon them the captains of the army of the king of Assyria, who took Manasseh in chains and bound him with fetters and carried him to Babylon.

¹⁹ And men will go into the caves of the rocks and into the holes of the earth, from before the terror of Jehovah and from the glory of his majesty, when he arises to shake the earth mightily.
²⁰ Men will cast away their idols of silver and their idols of gold in that day, which have been made for them to worship, to the moles and to the bats, ²¹ to go into the caverns of the rocks and into the clefts of the ragged rocks, from before the terror of Jehovah and from the glory of his majesty, when he arises to shake the earth mightily.

¹⁷ One thousand will flee at the threat of one. You* will flee at the threat of five, till you* are left as a beacon upon the top of a mountain and as an ensign on a hill

⁴ And it happened that, when Zedekiah the king of Judah and all the men of war saw them, then they fled and went forth out of the city by night, by the way of the king's garden, through the gate between the two walls and he went out toward the Arabah.
⁵ But the army of the Chaldeans pursued after them and overtook Zedekiah in the plains of Jericho. And when they had taken him, they brought him up to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath and he gave judgment upon him.
⁶ Then the king of Babylon killed the sons of Zedekiah in Riblah before his eyes. Also the king of Babylon killed all the nobles of Judah.

¹ I saw the Lord standing beside the altar. And he said, Strike the capitals, that the thresholds may shake and break them in pieces on the head of all of them and I will kill the last of them with the sword. There will not one of them flee away and there will not one of them escape.

³⁰ Then they will begin to say to the mountains, Fall upon us, and to the hills, Hide us.

¹⁵ And the kings of the earth and the great-men and the commanders and the rich and the strong and every bondservant and free man, hid themselves in the caves and in the rocks of the mountains; ¹⁶ and they say to the mountains and to the rocks, Fall upon us and hide us from the face of the one who is sitting upon the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb; ¹⁷ for the great day of his wrath has come, and who is able to stand?

³⁰ And when Jehu came to Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it. And she painted her eyes and attired her head and looked out at the window.

³ And what will you* do in the day of visitation and in the desolation which will come from far? To whom will you* flee for help? And where will you* leave your* glory?

⁶ And the inhabitant of this coast will say in that day, Behold, such is our trust, where we fled for help to be delivered from the king of Assyria. And we, how will we escape?

¹⁴ The sinners in Zion are afraid. Trembling has seized the profane. Who among us can dwell with the devouring fire? Who among us can dwell with everlasting burnings?

²¹ What will you say when he will set over you as head those whom you yourself have taught to be friends to you? Shall not sorrows take hold of you as of a woman in travail?

²⁰ Go up to Lebanon and cry. And lift up your voice in Bashan and cry from Abarim. For all your lovers are destroyed. ²¹ I spoke to you in your prosperity, but you said, I will not hear. This has been your manner from your youth, that you obeyed not my voice. ²² The wind will feed all your shepherds and your loved ones will go into captivity. Surely then you will be ashamed and confounded for all your wickedness.

² She weeps bitterly in the night and her tears are on her cheeks. Among all her loved ones she has none to comfort her. All her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they have become her enemies.

¹⁹ I called for my loved ones, but they deceived me. My priests and my elders gave up the spirit in the city, while they sought food for themselves to refresh their souls.

¹⁷ Our eyes do yet fail in looking for our vain help. In our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save.

³⁶ The lord Jehovah says thus: Because your filthiness was poured out and your nakedness uncovered through your prostitutions with your lovers and because of all the idols of your abominations and for the blood of your sons, that you gave to them, ³⁷ therefore, behold, I will gather all your lovers, with whom you have taken pleasure and all those whom you have loved, with all those whom you have hated, I will even gather them against you on every side. And I will uncover your nakedness to them, that they may see all your nakedness.
³⁸ And I will judge you, as women who break wedlock and shed blood are judged. And I will bring upon you the blood of wrath and jealousy. ³⁹ I will also give you into their hand and they will throw down your vaulted place and break down your lofty places. And they will strip you of your clothes and take your fair jewels and they will leave you naked and bare.
⁴⁰ They will also bring up a company against you and they will stone you with stones and thrust you through with their swords. ⁴¹ And they will burn your houses with fire and execute judgments upon you in the sight of many women. And I will cause you to cease from playing the prostitute and you will also give no wage any more.

⁹ Therefore I delivered her into the hand of her lovers, into the hand of the Assyrians, upon whom she doted. ¹⁰ These uncovered her nakedness. They took her sons and her daughters and they killed her with the sword. And she became a parable among women, for they executed judgments upon her.

²² Therefore, O Oholibah, thus says the lord Jehovah: Behold, I will raise up your lovers against you, from whom your soul is alienated and I will bring them against you on every side: ²³ the Babylonians and all the Chaldeans, Pekod and Shoa and Koa and all the Assyrians with them, desirable young men, governors and rulers all of them, rulers and men of renown, all of them riding upon horses. ²⁴ And they will come against you with weapons, chariots and wagons and with a company of peoples. They will set themselves against you with buckler and shield and helmet all around. And I will commit the judgment to them and they will judge you according to their judgments.

²⁸ For thus says the lord Jehovah: Behold, I will deliver you into the hand of those whom you hate, into the hand of those from whom your soul is alienated. ²⁹ And they will deal with you in hatred and will take away all your labor and will leave you naked and bare. And the nakedness of your prostitutions will be uncovered, both your lewdness and your prostitutions.

⁴⁰ And furthermore you* have sent for men who come from far, to whom a messenger was sent. And behold, they came, for whom you washed yourself, painted your eyes and decked yourself with ornaments, ⁴¹ and sat upon a stately bed, with a table prepared before it, you did set my incense and my oil upon it.

⁹ Will you yet say before him who slays you, I am God? But you are man and not God, in the hand of him who wounds you.

¹³ You were in Eden, the garden of God. Every precious stone was your covering, the ruby, the topaz and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald and the carbuncle and gold. The workmanship of your tambourine and of your pipes was in you. In the day that you were created they were prepared.

³ how shall we flee, having neglected so-great a salvation, which having received at the beginning was spoken through the Lord, which was confirmed to us from those who heard it?

² with whom the kings of the earth fornicated and those who are dwelling in the earth were made drunken from the wine of her fornication.

⁴ And the woman having been dressed in purple and scarlet arrayed with gold and precious stone and pearls, having in her hand a golden cup being full of abominations and the unclean things of her fornication of the earth,

¹³ These have one intention and they are giving their power and authority to the beast.

¹⁶ And the ten horns which you saw and the beast, these will hate the prostitute and will make her desolate and will make her naked and will eat her flesh and will be burning her up in fire. ¹⁷ For God gave to their hearts to do his intention and to do it with one intention and to give their kingdom to the beast, till the words of God should be completed. ¹⁸ And the woman whom you saw is the great city, which has a kingdom over the kings of the earth.

⁴⁶ And Rebekah said to Isaac, I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth. If Jacob takes a wife of the daughters of Heth, those like these, of the daughters of the land, what good will my life do me?

¹ My soul is weary of my life. I will give free reign to my complaint. I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

⁵ Woe is me, that I journey in Meshech, that I dwell among the tents of Kedar!

¹⁵ And when you* spread forth your* hands, I will hide my eyes from you*. Yes, when you* make many prayers, I will not hear; your* hands are full of blood.

⁵ Then I said, Woe is me! For I am undone, because I am a man of unclean lips and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips. For my eyes have seen the King, Jehovah of hosts.

⁸ And they will be dismayed. Pangs and sorrows will take hold. They will be in pain as a woman in travail. They will look in amazement one at another, their faces, faces of flame.

¹⁴ I have for a long time held my peace. I have been still and refrained myself. Now I will cry out like a travailing woman. I will gasp and pant together.

² The becoming one and delicate one, the daughter of Zion, I will cut off.

²³ They lay hold on bow and spear. They are cruel and have no mercy. Their voice roars like the sea and they ride upon horses. Each one set in array, as a man to the battle, against you, O daughter of Zion.
²⁴ We have heard the report of it. Our hands grow feeble. Anguish has taken hold of us and pangs as of a woman in travail.

¹⁸ If I go forth into the field, then, behold, the slain with the sword! And if I enter into the city, then, behold, those who are sick with famine! For both the prophet and the priest go about in the land and have no knowledge.

¹⁸ Why is my pain perpetual and my wound incurable, which refuses to be healed? Will you indeed be to me as a deceitful brook, as waters that fail?

²¹ Therefore deliver up their sons to the famine and give them over to the power of the sword and let their wives become childless and widows and let their men be slain of death and their young men struck of the sword in battle.

²³ O inhabitant of Lebanon, who makes your nest in the cedars, how greatly to be pitied you will be when pangs come upon you, the pain as of a woman in travail!

⁶ Ask you* now and see whether a man travails with child. Why do I see every man with his hands on his loins as a woman in travail and all faces are turned into paleness?

² Jehovah says thus, the God of Israel, to you, O Baruch:

⁴¹ Kerioth is taken and the strongholds are seized and the heart of the mighty men of Moab at that day will be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.

²² Behold, he will come up and fly as the eagle and spread out his wings against Bozrah. And the heart of the mighty men of Edom at that day will be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.

²⁴ Damascus has grown feeble. She turns herself to flee and trembling has seized on her. Anguish and sorrows have taken hold of her, as of a woman in travail.

⁴³ The king of Babylon has heard the news of them and his hands grow feeble. Anguish has taken hold of him and pangs as of a woman in travail.

¹⁷ Zion spreads forth her hands. There is none to comfort her. Jehovah has commanded concerning Jacob, that those who are all around him should be his adversaries. Jerusalem is among them as an unclean thing.

²⁰ Behold, O Jehovah, for I am in distress. My heart is troubled. My heart is turned within me. For I have grievously rebelled. Abroad the sword bereaves; at home there is as death.

⁵ And to the others he said in my hearing, Go through the city after him and kill*. Do not let your* eye spare, nor have you* pity. ⁶ Kill utterly the old man, the young man and the virgin and little sons and women, but do not come near any man upon whom is the mark. And begin at my sanctuary. Then they began at the old men who were before the house.

⁴⁶ For thus says the lord Jehovah: I will bring up a company against them and will give them to be tossed to and fro and robbed. ⁴⁷ And the company will stone them with stones and dispatch them with their swords. They will kill their sons and their daughters and burn up their houses with fire.

¹³ The sorrows of a travailing woman will come upon him. He is an unwise son, for it is time he should not abide in the place of the breaking forth of sons.

¹ Woe is me! For I am as when they have gathered the summer fruits, as the grape gleanings of the vintage. There is no cluster to eat. My soul desires the first ripe fig.

⁵ ‘Say to the daughter of Zion, Behold, your King is coming to you, meek and has been mounted upon a donkey and a colt, the son of a donkey.’

¹⁶ For if I proclaim the good-news, it is not boasting to me; for necessity is laid upon me, but woe is to me, if I, myself, do not proclaim the good-news.

³ For whenever they are saying, Peace and security; then sudden utter-destruction stands by them, just-like the travail a woman has in her womb, and they may never flee away from it.
