¹ They say, If a man puts away his wife and she goes from him and become another man's, will he return to her again? Will not that land be greatly polluted? But you have played the prostitute with many lovers. Yet return again to me, says Jehovah.
² Lift up your eyes to the bare heights and see. Where have you not been lain with? By the ways you have sat for them, as an Arabian in the wilderness and you have polluted the land with your prostitutions and with your wickedness.
³ Therefore the showers have been withheld and there has been no latter rain. Yet you have a prostitute's forehead; you refused to be ashamed.
⁴ Will you not from this time cry to me, My Father, you are the guide of my youth? ⁵ Will he retain his anger everlasting? Will he keep it to the end? Behold, you have spoken and have done evil things and have had your way.
⁶ Moreover Jehovah said to me in the days of Josiah the king, Have you seen what backsliding Israel has done? She has gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree and there has played the prostitute. ⁷ And I said after she had done all these things, She will return to me, but she returned not. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it.
⁸ And I saw, when, for this very cause that backsliding Israel had committed adultery, I had put her away and given her a document of divorcement, yet treacherous Judah her sister did not fear, but she also went and played the prostitute.
⁹ And it happened through the lightness of her prostitution, that the land was polluted and she committed adultery with stones and with stocks. ¹⁰ And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah has not returned to me with her whole heart, but in pretense, says Jehovah.
¹¹ And Jehovah said to me, Backsliding Israel has shown herself more righteous than treacherous Judah. ¹² Go and proclaim these words toward the north and say, Return, you backsliding Israel, says Jehovah, I will not look in anger upon you*, for I am merciful, says Jehovah. I will not keep anger everlasting.
¹³ Only acknowledge your iniquity, that you have transgressed against Jehovah your God and have scattered your ways to the strangers under every green tree and you* have not obeyed my voice, says Jehovah.
¹⁴ Return, O backsliding sons, says Jehovah, for I am a husband to you*. And I will take you*, one of a city and two of a family and I will bring you* to Zion.
¹⁵ And I will give you* shepherds according to my heart, who will feed you* with knowledge and understanding.
¹⁶ And it will happen, when you* are multiplied and increased in the land, in those days, says Jehovah, they will no more say, The ark of the covenant of Jehovah, nor will it come to mind. Neither will they remember it, nor will they miss it. Neither will it be made any more.
¹⁷ At that time they will call Jerusalem the throne of Jehovah and all the nations will be gathered to it, to the name of Jehovah, to Jerusalem. Neither will they walk any more after the stubbornness of their evil heart. ¹⁸ In those days the house of Judah will walk with the house of Israel and they will come together out of the land of the north to the land that I gave for an inheritance to your* fathers.
¹⁹ But I said, How I will put you among the sons and give you a desirable land, a pleasant heritage of the hosts of the nations! And I said, You* will call me My Father and will not turn away from following me.
²⁰ Surely as a wife treacherously departs from her husband, so you* have dealt treacherously with me, O house of Israel, says Jehovah.
²¹ A voice is heard upon the bare heights, the weeping and the supplications of the sons of Israel, because they have perverted their way; they have forgotten Jehovah their God.
²² Return, you* backsliding sons, I will heal your* backslidings. Behold, we have come to you, for you are Jehovah our God. ²³ Truly it is in vain from the heights, the multitude on the mountains. Truly in Jehovah our God is the salvation of Israel.
²⁴ But the shameful thing has devoured the labor of our fathers from our youth, their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters. ²⁵ Let us lie down in our shame and let our confusion cover us, for we have sinned against Jehovah our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even to this day and we have not obeyed the voice of Jehovah our God.

²⁴ Do not defile you* yourselves in any of these things. For in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out from before you*, ²⁵ and the land is defiled. Therefore I visit the iniquity of it upon it and the land vomits out its inhabitants.
²⁶ You* therefore will keep my statutes and my ordinances and will not do any of these abominations, neither the home-born, nor the stranger that travels among you*, ²⁷ (for all these abominations the men of the land have done, who were before you* and the land is defiled), ²⁸ that the land not vomit you* out also, when you* defile it, as it vomited out the nation that was before you*.

²⁹ But from there you* will seek Jehovah your God. And you will find him when you search after him with all your heart and with all your soul. ³⁰ When you are in tribulation and all these things have come upon you, in the latter days you will return to Jehovah your God and listen to his voice. ³¹ For Jehovah your God is a merciful God. He will not fail you, neither destroy you, nor forget the covenant of your fathers which he swore to them.

²¹ then they will bring the maiden out to the door of her father's house and the men of her city will stone her to death with stones, because she has done senselessness in Israel, to play the prostitute in her father's house. So will you put away the evil from the midst of you.

¹ When a man takes a wife and marries her, then it will be, if she finds no favor in his eyes, because he has found some unseemly thing in her, that he will write her a document of divorcement and give it in her hand and send her out of his house.
² And when she has departed out of his house, she may go and be another man's. ³ And if the latter husband dislikes her and writes her a document of divorcement and gives it in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if the latter husband dies, who took her to be his wife, ⁴ her former husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife after she is defiled. For that is abomination before Jehovah and you will not cause the land to sin, which Jehovah your God gives you for an inheritance.

² And his concubine played the prostitute against him and went away from him to her father's house to Bethlehem in Judah and was there the space of four months.

⁵ The earth also is polluted under the inhabitants of it, because they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, broken the everlasting covenant.

⁶ Seek Jehovah while he may be found. Call you* upon him while he is near. ⁷ Let the wicked man forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts. And let him return to Jehovah and he will have mercy upon him and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
⁸ For my thoughts are not your* thoughts, nor are your* ways my ways, says Jehovah. ⁹ For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your* ways and my thoughts than your* thoughts.

⁷ And I brought you* into a plentiful land, to eat the fruit of it and the goodness of it.
But when you* entered, you* defiled my land and made my heritage an abomination.

²⁰ For from old time I have broken your yoke and burst your bonds. And you said, I will not serve, for upon every high hill and under every green tree you bowed yourself, playing the prostitute.

²³ How can you say, I am not defiled; I have not gone after the Baals? See your way in the valley. Know what you have done, a swift dromedary traversing her ways,

²² Return, you* backsliding sons, I will heal your* backslidings. Behold, we have come to you, for you are Jehovah our God.

¹ If you will return, O Israel, says Jehovah, if you will return to me and if you will put away your abominations out of my sight, then you will not be removed.

¹⁴ O Jerusalem, wash your heart from wickedness, that you may be saved. How long will your evil thoughts lodge within you?

⁴ Moreover you will say to them, Jehovah says thus: Shall men fall and not rise up again? Shall he turn away and not return? ⁵ Why has this people of Jerusalem then slid back by a perpetual backsliding? They hold firm deceit. They refuse to return. ⁶ I listened and heard, but they did not speak aright. No man repents of his wickedness, saying, What have I done? Everyone turns to his course as a horse that rushes headlong in the battle.

²⁶ You have also committed fornication with the Egyptians, your neighbors, great of flesh and have multiplied your prostitution, to provoke me to anger.

²⁸ You have played the prostitute also with the Assyrians, because you were insatiable. Yes, you have played the prostitute with them and yet you were not satisfied. ²⁹ You have moreover multiplied your prostitution to the land of traffic, to Chaldea and yet you were not satisfied with this.

⁴ And the names of them were Oholah the elder and Oholibah her sister. And they became mine and they bore sons and daughters. And as for their names, Samaria is Oholah and Jerusalem Oholibah. ⁵ And Oholah played the prostitute when she was mine and she doted on her lovers, on the Assyrians her neighbors, ⁶ who were clothed with blue, governors and rulers, all of them desirable young men, horsemen riding upon horses. ⁷ And she bestowed her prostitutions upon them, the choicest men of Assyria all of them.
And on whomever she doted, with all their idols she defiled herself. ⁸ Neither has she left her prostitutions since Egypt. For in her youth they lie with her and they handled the bosom of her virginity and they poured out their prostitution upon her.
⁹ Therefore I delivered her into the hand of her lovers, into the hand of the Assyrians, upon whom she doted. ¹⁰ These uncovered her nakedness. They took her sons and her daughters and they killed her with the sword. And she became a parable among women, for they executed judgments upon her.
¹¹ And her sister Oholibah saw this, yet she was more corrupt in her doting than she and in her prostitutions which were more than the prostitutions of her sister. ¹² She doted upon the Assyrians, governors and rulers, her neighbors, clothed most gorgeously, horsemen riding upon horses, all of them desirable young men. ¹³ And I saw that she was defiled. They both took one way.
¹⁴ And she increased her prostitutions, for she saw men portrayed upon the wall, the images of Chaldeans portrayed with vermilion, ¹⁵ girded with belts upon their loins, with flowing turbans upon their heads, all of them rulers to look upon, according to the likeness of the Babylonians in Chaldea, the land of their nativity.
¹⁶ And as soon as she saw them she doted upon them and sent messengers to them into Chaldea. ¹⁷ And the Babylonians came to her into the bed of love. And they defiled her with their prostitution and she was polluted with them and her soul was alienated from them.
¹⁸ So she uncovered her prostitutions and uncovered her nakedness. Then my soul was alienated from her, just as my soul was alienated from her sister. ¹⁹ Yet she multiplied her prostitutions, remembering the days of her youth in which she had played the prostitute in the land of Egypt. ²⁰ And she doted upon their paramours, whose flesh is as the flesh of donkeys and whose seminal-discharge is like the seminal-discharge of horses.
²¹ Thus you called to remembrance the lewdness of your youth, in the handling of your bosom by the Egyptians for the breasts of your youth.
²² Therefore, O Oholibah, thus says the lord Jehovah: Behold, I will raise up your lovers against you, from whom your soul is alienated and I will bring them against you on every side: ²³ the Babylonians and all the Chaldeans, Pekod and Shoa and Koa and all the Assyrians with them, desirable young men, governors and rulers all of them, rulers and men of renown, all of them riding upon horses. ²⁴ And they will come against you with weapons, chariots and wagons and with a company of peoples. They will set themselves against you with buckler and shield and helmet all around. And I will commit the judgment to them and they will judge you according to their judgments.
²⁵ And I will set my jealousy against you and they will deal with you in fury. They will take away your nose and your ears and your residue will fall by the sword. They will take your sons and your daughters and your residue will be devoured by the fire. ²⁶ They will also strip you of your clothes and take away your fair jewels.
²⁷ Thus I will make your lewdness to cease from you and your prostitution from the land of Egypt, so that you will not lift up your eyes to them, nor remember Egypt any more.
²⁸ For thus says the lord Jehovah: Behold, I will deliver you into the hand of those whom you hate, into the hand of those from whom your soul is alienated. ²⁹ And they will deal with you in hatred and will take away all your labor and will leave you naked and bare. And the nakedness of your prostitutions will be uncovered, both your lewdness and your prostitutions.
³⁰ These things will be done to you, because you have played the prostitute after the nations and because you are polluted with their idols.
³¹ You have walked in the way of your sister, therefore I will give her cup into your hand. ³² The lord Jehovah says thus: You will drink of your sister's cup, which is deep and large. You will be laughed to scorn and have more scorning. It contains much. ³³ You will be filled with drunkenness and sorrow, with the cup of astonishment and desolation, with the cup of your sister Samaria. ³⁴ You will even drink it and drain it out. And you will gnaw the shards of it and will tear your breasts, for I have spoken it, says the lord Jehovah.
³⁵ Therefore thus says the lord Jehovah: Because you have forgotten me and cast me behind your back, therefore you also bear your lewdness and your prostitutions.
³⁶ Jehovah said moreover to me, Son of man, will you judge Oholah and Oholibah? Then declare to them their abominations. ³⁷ For they have committed adultery and blood is in their hands. And with their idols they have committed adultery. And they have also caused their sons, whom they bore to me, to pass through the fire for them to be devoured.
³⁸ Moreover they have done this to me: They have defiled my sanctuary in the same day and have profaned my Sabbaths. ³⁹ For when they had slain their sons to their idols, then they came the same day into my sanctuary to profane it, and behold, thus they have done in the midst of my house.
⁴⁰ And furthermore you* have sent for men who come from far, to whom a messenger was sent. And behold, they came, for whom you washed yourself, painted your eyes and decked yourself with ornaments, ⁴¹ and sat upon a stately bed, with a table prepared before it, you did set my incense and my oil upon it.
⁴² And the voice of a multitude being at ease was with her. And with men of the common sort, were brought drunkards from the wilderness and they put bracelets upon the hands of those two women and beautiful crowns upon their heads.
⁴³ Then I said of her who was old in adulteries, Now they will play the prostitute with her and she with them. ⁴⁴ And they went in to her, as they go in to a prostitute. So they went in to Oholah and to Oholibah, the lewd women.
⁴⁵ And righteous men, they will judge them with the judgment of adulteresses and with the judgment of women who shed blood, because they are adulteresses and blood is on their hands.
⁴⁶ For thus says the lord Jehovah: I will bring up a company against them and will give them to be tossed to and fro and robbed. ⁴⁷ And the company will stone them with stones and dispatch them with their swords. They will kill their sons and their daughters and burn up their houses with fire.
⁴⁸ Thus I will cause lewdness to cease out of the land, that all women may be instructed not to do according to your* lewdness. ⁴⁹ And they will recompense your* lewdness upon you* and you* will bear the sins of your* idols. And you* will know that I am the lord Jehovah.

¹¹ Say to them, As I live, says the lord Jehovah, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked man, but that the wicked man turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your* evil ways, for why will you* die, O house of Israel?

² When Jehovah spoke at the first by Hosea, Jehovah said to Hosea, Go, take to you a wife of prostitution and children of prostitution, for the land commits great prostitution, departing from Jehovah.

¹ O Israel, return to Jehovah your God, for you have fallen by your iniquity. ² Take with you* words and return to Jehovah. Say to him, Take away all iniquity and accept what is good. So we will render as bullocks the offering of our lips. ³ Assyria will not save us. We will not ride upon horses, nor will we say any more to the work of our hands, Our gods. For in you the fatherless finds mercy.
⁴ I will heal their backsliding. I will love them freely. For my anger is turned away from him.

¹⁰ Arise and depart, for this is not your* resting-place, because of uncleanness that destroys, even with a grievous destruction.

³ Therefore you say to them, Jehovah of hosts says thus:
Return to me, says Jehovah of hosts and I will return to you*, says Jehovah of hosts.

¹⁶ And he was desiring to fill his belly from the carob pods that the swine were eating, and no one was giving anything to him. ¹⁷ Now having come to himself, he said, How many of my father’s hired servants are abounding, even of bread? But I am perishing here in famine! ¹⁸ After having risen up, I will be traveling to my father, and will say to him, Father, I have sinned at heaven, and in your sight. ¹⁹ I am no more worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants. \ulnone\nosupersub ²⁰ And standing up, he came to his father. ²² But the father said to his bondservants, Bring out the foremost robe and clothe him, and give him a ring for his hand and shoes for his feet; ²³ and when you have brought the fattened calf, sacrifice it, and when we eat it, we should be joyous. ²⁴ Because this one, my son, was dead and then lived again, and was perishing and then was found. And they began to be joyous.

¹⁴ And she put the garments of her widowhood off from her and covered herself with her veil and wrapped herself and sat in the gateway of two-springs Enaim, which is by the way to Timnah, becauses he saw that Shelah was grown up and she was not given to him as a wife.

² You* will surely destroy all the places in which the nations that you* will dispossess served their gods, upon the high mountains and upon the hills and under every green tree.

³ And he had seven hundred wives, princesses and three hundred concubines. And his wives turned away his heart.

¹³ And the king defiled the high places that were before Jerusalem, which were on the right hand of the mountain of corruption, which Solomon the King of Israel had built for Ashtoreth the abomination of the Sidonians and for Chemosh the abomination of Moab and for Milcom the abomination of the sons of Ammon.

⁴ And behold, the glory of the God of Israel was there, according to the appearance that I saw in the plain.
⁵ Then he said to me, Son of man, lift up your eyes now the way toward the north. So I lifted up my eyes the way toward the north, and behold, northward of the gate of the altar was this image of jealousy in the entry.
⁶ And he said to me, Son of man, see what they do, even the great abominations that the house of Israel commit here, that I should go far off from my sanctuary? But you will again see yet other great abominations.

There also they made their sweet aroma and they poured out there their drink offerings.

¹⁹ And I will break the pride of your* power. And I will make your* sky as iron and your* earth as brass,

²³ And your sky that is over your head will be brass and the earth that is under you will be iron.

¹⁷ and refused to obey, neither were mindful of your wonders that you did among them, but stiffened their neck. And in their rebellion they appointed a captain to return to their bondage. But you are a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abundant in loving kindness and did not forsake them.

⁶ And I will lay it waste. It will not be pruned nor hoed, but there will come up briers and thorns. I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.

³ O Jehovah, do not your eyes look upon truth? You have stricken them, but they were not grieved. You have consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction. They have made their faces harder than a rock. They have refused to return.

²⁴ Neither do they say in their heart, Let us now fear Jehovah our God, who gives rain, both the former and the latter, in its season, who preserves to us the appointed weeks of the harvest.

¹² Who is the wise man, who may understand this and he to whom the mouth of Jehovah has spoken, that he may declare it? Why has the land perished and burned up like a wilderness, so that none passes through?

²² Are there any among the vanities of the nations that can cause rain? Or can the heavens give showers? Are not you he, O Jehovah our God? Therefore we will wait for you, for you have made all these things.

¹⁶ As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of Jehovah, we will not listen to you.
¹⁷ But we will certainly perform every word that has gone forth out of our mouth, to burn incense to the queen of heaven and to pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our rulers, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we had plenty of food and were well and saw no evil.

⁷ But the house of Israel will not listen to you, for they will not listen to me. For all the house of Israel are of a hard forehead and of a stiff heart.

³⁰ How weak is your heart, says the lord Jehovah, seeing you do all these things, the work of an impudent prostitute, ³¹ in that you build your vaulted place at the head of every way and make your lofty place in every street. And have not even been as a prostitute, in that you scorn hire. ³² A wife who commits adultery, who takes strangers instead of her husband!
³³ They give gifts to all prostitutes, but you give your gifts to all your lovers and bribe them, that they may come to you on every side for your prostitutions. ³⁴ And you are different from other women in your prostitutions, in that none follows you to play the prostitute. And in your giving a hire and no hire is given to you, therefore you are different.

¹⁶ Is not the food cut off before our eyes, yes, joy and gladness from the house of our God? ¹⁷ The seeds rot under their clods. The garners are laid desolate. The barns are broken down. For the grain is withered. ¹⁸ How do the beasts groan! The herds of cattle are perplexed because they have no pasture, yes, the flocks of sheep are made desolate.
¹⁹ O Jehovah, I cry to you. For the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness and the flame has burned all the trees of the field. ²⁰ Yes, the beasts of the field pant to you, for the water brooks are dried up and the fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness.

⁷ And I also have withheld the rain from you*, when there were yet three months to the harvest. And I caused it to rain upon one city and caused it not to rain upon another city. One piece was rained upon and the piece upon which it did not rain withered.

⁵ Jehovah in the midst of her is righteous. He will not do unrighteousness. Every morning he brings his justice to light. He does not fail, but the unjust man knows no shame.

¹¹ And I called for a drought upon the land and upon the mountains and upon the grain and upon the new wine and upon the oil and upon what the ground brings forth and upon men and upon cattle and upon all the labor of the hands.

²⁵ Beware that you do not renounce the one who speaks. For if those men did not flee when they renounced the one who divinely-warned them upon the earth, much more we may not flee who are turning away from him, who is from the heavens;

¹⁴ Because this God is our God everlasting and forever. He will be our guide even to death.

⁵ Because you are my hope, O lord Jehovah, my trust from my youth.

¹⁷ O God, you have taught me from my youth and I have declared your wondrous works until now.

⁹ With what will a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to your word.

⁴ to give prudence to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion,

¹⁷ who forsakes the companion of her youth and forgets the covenant of her God

² Go and cry in the ears of Jerusalem, saying, Jehovah says thus, I remember for you the kindness of your youth, the love of your espousals, how you went after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown.

²⁷ who say to a block of wood, You are my father and to a stone, You have brought me forth. For they have turned their back to me and not their face.
But in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise and save us.

¹⁹ But I said, How I will put you among the sons and give you a desirable land, a pleasant heritage of the hosts of the nations! And I said, You* will call me My Father and will not turn away from following me.

⁹ They will come with weeping. And I will lead them with supplications. I will cause them to walk by rivers of waters, in a straight way in which they will not stumble. For I am a father to Israel and Ephraim is my firstborn.

¹⁸ I have surely heard Ephraim sympathize within himself saying, You have disciplined me and I was disciplined as a calf unaccustomed to the yoke. Turn me back and I will be turned back, for you are Jehovah my God.
¹⁹ Surely after that I was turned back. I repented and after I was instructed, I killed* upon my thigh. I was ashamed, yes, even confounded, because I bore the reproach of my youth.
²⁰ Is Ephraim my dear son? Is he a darling child? For as often as I speak against him, I do earnestly remember him still. Therefore my heart yearns for him. I will surely have mercy upon him, says Jehovah.

¹⁵ And I will give her, her vineyards from there and the valley of Achor for a door of hope. And she will make answer there, as in the days of her youth and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.

¹ O Israel, return to Jehovah your God, for you have fallen by your iniquity. ² Take with you* words and return to Jehovah. Say to him, Take away all iniquity and accept what is good. So we will render as bullocks the offering of our lips. ³ Assyria will not save us. We will not ride upon horses, nor will we say any more to the work of our hands, Our gods. For in you the fatherless finds mercy.

¹⁴ Yet you* say, Why?
Because Jehovah has been witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have dealt with treacherously, though she is your companion and the wife of your covenant.

⁷ Will the Lord cast off everlasting? And will he be favorable no more? ⁸ Has his loving kindness ceased forever? Does his promise come to an end in this generation? ⁹ Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has he shut up his tender mercies in anger? Selah.

⁵ Will you be angry with us everlasting? Will you prolong your anger to all generations?

⁸ Jehovah is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abundant in loving kindness.
⁹ He will not always contend, nor will he keep it everlasting.

¹⁶ For I will not contend everlasting, nor will I always be angry, for the spirit would faint before me and the souls that I have made.

⁹ Do not be angry very severely, O Jehovah, nor remember iniquity forever. Behold, look, we beseech you, we are all your people.

¹² Go and proclaim these words toward the north and say, Return, you backsliding Israel, says Jehovah, I will not look in anger upon you*, for I am merciful, says Jehovah. I will not keep anger everlasting.

⁶ Behold, the rulers of Israel, each one according to his power, have been in you to shed blood.

¹ Woe to those who devise wickedness and work evil upon their beds! When the morning is light they practice it, because it is in the power of their hand.

³ Their hands are upon what is evil to do it diligently. The ruler asks and the judge asks for a bribe. And the great man, he utters the evil desire of his soul. Thus they weave it together.

¹ Woe to her who is rebellious and polluted, to the oppressing city! ² She obeyed not the voice. She received not correction. She trusted not in Jehovah. She did not draw near to her God. ³ Her rulers in the midst of her are roaring lions. Her judges are evening wolves. They leave nothing till the morrow. ⁴ Her prophets are airy and treacherous men. Her priests have profaned the sanctuary. They have done violence to the law.
⁵ Jehovah in the midst of her is righteous. He will not do unrighteousness. Every morning he brings his justice to light. He does not fail, but the unjust man knows no shame.

²³ For they also built for them high places and pillars and Asherim, on every high hill and under every green tree.

⁷ And it was so, because the sons of Israel had sinned against Jehovah their God who brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh King of Egypt and had feared other gods, ⁸ and walked in the statutes of the nations, whom Jehovah cast out from before the sons of Israel and of the kings of Israel, which they made.
⁹ And the sons of Israel did things secretly that were not right against Jehovah their God. And they built for them high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fortified city. ¹⁰ And they set up for them pillars and Asherim upon every high hill and under every green tree, ¹¹ and there they burnt incense in all the high places, as the nations did whom Jehovah carried away before them. And they worked wicked things to provoke Jehovah to anger. ¹² And they served idols, of which Jehovah had said to them, You* will not do this thing.
¹³ Yet Jehovah testified to Israel and to Judah, by every prophet and every seer, saying, Turn from your* evil ways and keep my commandments and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your* fathers and which I sent to you* by my servants the prophets. ¹⁴ Notwithstanding, they would not hear, but stiffened their neck, like the neck of their fathers who did not believe in Jehovah their God.
¹⁵ And they rejected his statutes and his covenant that he made with their fathers and his testimonies which he testified to them. And they followed vanity and became vain and went after the nations that were all around them, concerning whom Jehovah had charged them that they should not do like them.
¹⁶ And they forsook all the commandments of Jehovah their God and made for them molten images, even two calves and made an Asherah and worshiped all the host of heaven and served Baal.
¹⁷ And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire and used divination and enchantments and sold themselves to do what was evil in the sight of Jehovah to provoke him to anger.

⁷ Upon a high and lofty mountain you have set your bed. You also went up there to offer sacrifice.

¹⁹ Your own wickedness will discipline you and your backslidings will reprove you. Know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and a bitter, that you have forsaken Jehovah your God and that my fear is not in you, says the Lord, Jehovah of hosts.
²⁰ For from old time I have broken your yoke and burst your bonds. And you said, I will not serve, for upon every high hill and under every green tree you bowed yourself, playing the prostitute.

⁸ And I saw, when, for this very cause that backsliding Israel had committed adultery, I had put her away and given her a document of divorcement, yet treacherous Judah her sister did not fear, but she also went and played the prostitute.

¹¹ And Jehovah said to me, Backsliding Israel has shown herself more righteous than treacherous Judah.

²⁴ But they listened not, nor inclined their ear, but walked in their own counsels, in the stubbornness of their evil heart and went backward and not forward.

² while their sons remember their altars and their Asherim by the green trees upon the high hills.

³¹ in that you build your vaulted place at the head of every way and make your lofty place in every street. And have not even been as a prostitute, in that you scorn hire.

¹¹ And her sister Oholibah saw this, yet she was more corrupt in her doting than she and in her prostitutions which were more than the prostitutions of her sister.

¹³ Yet Jehovah testified to Israel and to Judah, by every prophet and every seer, saying, Turn from your* evil ways and keep my commandments and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your* fathers and which I sent to you* by my servants the prophets. ¹⁴ Notwithstanding, they would not hear, but stiffened their neck, like the neck of their fathers who did not believe in Jehovah their God.

⁶ So the posts went with the letters from the king and his rulers throughout all Israel and Judah and according to the commandment of the king, saying, You* sons of Israel, turn again to Jehovah, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, that he may return to the remnant of you* who escaped out of the hand of the kings of Assyria. ⁷ And be you* not like your* fathers and like your* brothers, who trespassed against Jehovah, the God of their fathers, so that he gave them up to desolation, as you* see.
⁸ Now be you* not stiff-necked, as your* fathers were, but yield yourselves to Jehovah and enter into his sanctuary, which he has made holy everlasting and serve Jehovah your* God, that his fierce anger may turn away from you*. ⁹ For if you* turn again to Jehovah, your* brothers and your* sons will find compassion before those who led them captive and will come again into this land. For Jehovah your* God is gracious and merciful and will not turn away his face from you*, if you* return to him.
¹⁰ So the posts passed from city to city through the country of Ephraim and Manasseh, even to Zebulun. But they laughed them to scorn and mocked them.
¹¹ Nevertheless certain men of Asher and Manasseh and of Zebulun humbled themselves and came to Jerusalem. ¹² Also the hand of God came upon Judah to give them one heart, to do the commandment of the king and of the rulers by the word of Jehovah.

⁸ And I saw, when, for this very cause that backsliding Israel had committed adultery, I had put her away and given her a document of divorcement, yet treacherous Judah her sister did not fear, but she also went and played the prostitute.
⁹ And it happened through the lightness of her prostitution, that the land was polluted and she committed adultery with stones and with stocks. ¹⁰ And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah has not returned to me with her whole heart, but in pretense, says Jehovah.
¹¹ And Jehovah said to me, Backsliding Israel has shown herself more righteous than treacherous Judah.

⁴⁶ And your elder sister is Samaria, who dwells at your left hand, she and her daughters. And your younger sister, who dwells at your right hand, is Sodom and her daughters.

² Son of man, there were two women, the daughters of one mother. ³ And they played the prostitute in Egypt. They played the prostitute in their youth. There their breasts were pressed and there was handled the bosom of their virginity.
⁴ And the names of them were Oholah the elder and Oholibah her sister. And they became mine and they bore sons and daughters. And as for their names, Samaria is Oholah and Jerusalem Oholibah.

¹ Come and let us return to Jehovah, for he has torn and he will heal us. He has struck and he will bind us up. ² After two days he will revive us. On the third day he will raise us up and we will live before him. ³ And let us know, let us follow on to know Jehovah. His going forth is sure as the morning and he will come to us as the rain, as the latter rain that waters the earth.
⁴ O Ephraim, what shall I do to you? O Judah, what shall I do to you? For your* goodness is as a morning cloud and as the dew that goes away early.

¹ O Israel, return to Jehovah your God, for you have fallen by your iniquity.

¹ When a man takes a wife and marries her, then it will be, if she finds no favor in his eyes, because he has found some unseemly thing in her, that he will write her a document of divorcement and give it in her hand and send her out of his house.

³ And if the latter husband dislikes her and writes her a document of divorcement and gives it in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if the latter husband dies, who took her to be his wife,

⁶ In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria took Samaria and carried Israel away to Assyria and placed them in Halak and on the Habor, the river of Gozan and in the cities of the Medes.
⁷ And it was so, because the sons of Israel had sinned against Jehovah their God who brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh King of Egypt and had feared other gods, ⁸ and walked in the statutes of the nations, whom Jehovah cast out from before the sons of Israel and of the kings of Israel, which they made.

⁹ And it happened in the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah King of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria and besieged it. ¹⁰ And at the end of three years they took it. Samaria was taken in the sixth year of Hezekiah, which was the ninth year of Hoshea King of Israel. ¹¹ And the king of Assyria carried Israel away to Assyria and put them in Halak and on the Habor, the river of Gozan and in the cities of the Medes,

¹ Jehovah says thus, Where is the document of your* mother's divorcement, with which I have put her away? Or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you*? Behold, for your* iniquities you* were sold and for your* transgressions your* mother was put away.

⁴⁷ Yet you have not walked in their ways, nor done according to their abominations, but, like it was a very little thing, you were more corrupt than they in all your ways.

⁹ Therefore I delivered her into the hand of her lovers, into the hand of the Assyrians, upon whom she doted.

¹¹ And her sister Oholibah saw this, yet she was more corrupt in her doting than she and in her prostitutions which were more than the prostitutions of her sister. ¹² She doted upon the Assyrians, governors and rulers, her neighbors, clothed most gorgeously, horsemen riding upon horses, all of them desirable young men. ¹³ And I saw that she was defiled. They both took one way.
¹⁴ And she increased her prostitutions, for she saw men portrayed upon the wall, the images of Chaldeans portrayed with vermilion, ¹⁵ girded with belts upon their loins, with flowing turbans upon their heads, all of them rulers to look upon, according to the likeness of the Babylonians in Chaldea, the land of their nativity.
¹⁶ And as soon as she saw them she doted upon them and sent messengers to them into Chaldea. ¹⁷ And the Babylonians came to her into the bed of love. And they defiled her with their prostitution and she was polluted with them and her soul was alienated from them.
¹⁸ So she uncovered her prostitutions and uncovered her nakedness. Then my soul was alienated from her, just as my soul was alienated from her sister. ¹⁹ Yet she multiplied her prostitutions, remembering the days of her youth in which she had played the prostitute in the land of Egypt. ²⁰ And she doted upon their paramours, whose flesh is as the flesh of donkeys and whose seminal-discharge is like the seminal-discharge of horses.
²¹ Thus you called to remembrance the lewdness of your youth, in the handling of your bosom by the Egyptians for the breasts of your youth.

² Contend with your* mother. Contend, for she is not my wife, nor am I her husband. And let her put away her prostitutions from her face and her adulteries from between her breasts, ³ lest I strip her naked and set her as in the day that she was born and make her as a wilderness and set her like a dry land and kill her with thirst.

⁴ For the sons of Israel will abide many days without king and without ruler and without sacrifice and without pillar and without ephod or household-idol.

¹⁵ Though you, Israel, play the prostitute, yet do not let Judah offend and do not come to Gilgal, nor go up to Beth-aven, nor swear, As Jehovah lives. ¹⁶ For Israel has behaved himself stubbornly, like a stubborn heifer. Now Jehovah will feed them as a lamb in a large place. ¹⁷ Ephraim is joined to idols, let him alone.

¹⁵ All their wickedness is in Gilgal, for there I hated them. Because of the wickedness of their practices I will drive them out of my house. I will love them no more. All their rulers are rebels.
¹⁶ Ephraim is struck. Their root is dried up. They will bear no fruit. Yes, though they bring forth, yet I will kill the beloved fruit of their womb. ¹⁷ My God will cast them away because they did not listen to him and they will be wanderers among the nations.

⁶ Among the smooth stones of the valley is your portion. They, they are your lot, even to them you have poured a drink offering; you have offered an oblation. Shall I be appeased for these things?

² Lift up your eyes to the bare heights and see. Where have you not been lain with? By the ways you have sat for them, as an Arabian in the wilderness and you have polluted the land with your prostitutions and with your wickedness.

⁸ But they are together stupid and foolish, the instruction of idols! It is but a block of wood.

¹⁷ You also took your fair jewels of my gold and of my silver, which I had given you and made for you images of men and played the prostitute with them.

¹⁰ These uncovered her nakedness. They took her sons and her daughters and they killed her with the sword. And she became a parable among women, for they executed judgments upon her.

¹² My people ask counsel at their stock and their staff declares to them, for the spirit of prostitution has made them go-astray and they have played the prostitute, departing from under their God.

¹⁹ Woe to him who says to the wood, Awake! To the dumb stone, Arise! Shall this teach? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.

³³ And Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that pertained to the sons of Israel and made all who were found in Israel to serve, even to serve Jehovah their God. All his days they did not depart from following Jehovah, the God of their fathers.

⁴⁴ As soon as they hear of me they will obey me. The foreigners will submit themselves to me.

³ Say to God, How awesome are your works! Through the greatness of your power your enemies will submit themselves to you.

³⁶ But they deceived him with their mouth and lied to him with their tongue. ³⁷ For their heart was not right with him, nor were they faithful in his covenant.

⁶ I will send him against a profane nation and against the people of my wrath. I will give him a charge, to take the spoil and to take the prey and to tread them down like the mud of the streets.

² You have planted them. Yes, they have taken root, they grow. Yes, they bring forth fruit. You are near in their mouth and far from their heart. But you, O Jehovah, know me. You see me and try my heart toward you.

¹⁴ And they have not cried to me with their heart, but they howl upon their beds. They assemble themselves for grain and new wine. They rebel against me.

⁵¹ Neither has Samaria committed half of your sins, but you have multiplied your abominations more than they and have justified your sisters by all your abominations which you have done.
⁵² You also, bear your own shame, in that you have given judgment for your sisters, through your sins that you have committed more abominable than they. They are more righteous than you. Yes, be also confounded and bear your shame, in that you have justified your sisters.

¹⁶ For Israel has behaved himself stubbornly, like a stubborn heifer. Now Jehovah will feed them as a lamb in a large place.

⁷ And my people are bent on backsliding from me. Though they call them to him who is on high, none at all will exalt him.

² and will return to Jehovah your God and will obey his voice according to all that I command you this day, you and your sons, with all your heart and with all your soul,

²⁹ In the days of Pekah King of Israel, Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria came and took Ijon and Abel-beth-maacah and Janoah and Kedesh and Hazor and Gilead and Galilee, all the land of Naphtali. And he carried them captive to Assyria.

⁶ In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria took Samaria and carried Israel away to Assyria and placed them in Halak and on the Habor, the river of Gozan and in the cities of the Medes.

²³ until Jehovah removed Israel out of his sight, as he spoke by all his servants the prophets. So Israel was carried away out of their own land to Assyria to this day.

¹ Now it happened in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah King of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.

⁹ For if you* turn again to Jehovah, your* brothers and your* sons will find compassion before those who led them captive and will come again into this land. For Jehovah your* God is gracious and merciful and will not turn away his face from you*, if you* return to him.

⁵ How long, O Jehovah? Will you be angry forever? Shall your jealousy burn like fire?

⁵ Because you, Lord, are good and ready to forgive and abundant in loving kindness to all those who call upon you.

¹⁵ But you, O Lord, are a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abundant in loving kindness and truth.

⁸ Jehovah is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abundant in loving kindness.

¹⁷ But the loving kindness of Jehovah is from everlasting to everlasting upon those who fear him and his righteousness to son's sons,

⁸ Jehovah is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great loving kindness.

¹³ He who covers his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.

²² I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, your transgressions, and as a cloud, your sins. Return to me, for I have redeemed you.

⁵ Will he retain his anger everlasting? Will he keep it to the end? Behold, you have spoken and have done evil things and have had your way.

⁷ And I said after she had done all these things, She will return to me, but she returned not. And her treacherous sister Judah saw it.

¹⁴ Return, O backsliding sons, says Jehovah, for I am a husband to you*. And I will take you*, one of a city and two of a family and I will bring you* to Zion.

¹⁸ In those days the house of Judah will walk with the house of Israel and they will come together out of the land of the north to the land that I gave for an inheritance to your* fathers.

⁸ but, As Jehovah lives, who brought up and who led the seed of the house of Israel out of the north country and from all the countries where I had driven them. And they will dwell in their own land.

¹¹ For I am with you, says Jehovah, to save you. For I will make a full end of all the nations where I have scattered you, but I will not make a full end of you. But I will discipline you in measure and will in no way leave you unpunished.

⁸ Behold, I will bring them from the north country and gather them from the outermost parts of the earth and with them the blind man and the lame man, the woman with child and she who travails with child together. They will return here a great company.

²⁶ then I will also cast away the seed of Jacob and of David my servant, so that I will not take of his seed to be rulers over the seed of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. For I will cause their captivity to return and will have mercy on them.

²⁵ Therefore thus says the lord Jehovah: Now I will bring back the captivity of Jacob and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel. And I will be jealous for my holy name.

¹ Come and let us return to Jehovah, for he has torn and he will heal us. He has struck and he will bind us up.

⁸ How shall I give you up, Ephraim? How shall I cast you off, Israel? How shall I make you as Admah? How shall I set you as Zeboiim? My heart is turned within me. My compassions are kindled together. ⁹ I will not execute the fierceness of my anger. I will not return to destroy Ephraim. For I am God and not man, the Holy One in the midst of you and I will not come in wrath.

¹⁸ Who is a God like to you, who pardons iniquity and passes over the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in loving kindness.
¹⁹ He will again have compassion upon us. He will tread our iniquities under foot and you will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. ²⁰ You will perform the truth to Jacob and the loving kindness to Abraham, which you have sworn to our fathers from the days of long-ago.

²⁰ But the law entered in beside us, in order that the trespass might increase, but where sin increased, the favor over-abounded; ²¹ in order that, just-as sin reigned in death, so also the favor might also reign through righteousness to everlasting life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

⁴⁰ And they will confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers, in their trespass which they trespassed against me and also that, because they walked contrary to me, ⁴¹ I also walked contrary to them and brought them into the land of their enemies. If then their uncircumcised heart be humbled and they then accept of the punishment of their iniquity, ⁴² then I will remember my covenant with Jacob and also my covenant with Isaac and also my covenant with Abraham will I remember and I will remember the land.

¹ And it will happen, when all these things have come upon you, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before you and you will call them to mind among all the nations, where Jehovah your God has driven you, ² and will return to Jehovah your God and will obey his voice according to all that I command you this day, you and your sons, with all your heart and with all your soul, ³ that then Jehovah your God will turn your captivity and have compassion upon you and will return and gather you from all the peoples where Jehovah your God has scattered you.

²⁷ He sings before men and says, I have sinned and perverted what was right and it did not profit me. ²⁸ He has redeemed my soul from going into the pit and my life will behold the light.

²⁵ Withhold your foot from being unshod and your throat from thirst. But you said, It is in vain. No, for I have loved strangers and after them I will go.

⁶ Moreover Jehovah said to me in the days of Josiah the king, Have you seen what backsliding Israel has done? She has gone up upon every high mountain and under every green tree and there has played the prostitute.

²⁵ Let us lie down in our shame and let our confusion cover us, for we have sinned against Jehovah our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even to this day and we have not obeyed the voice of Jehovah our God.

²⁰ We acknowledge, O Jehovah, our wickedness and the iniquity of our fathers, for we have sinned against you.

¹⁵ But you trusted in your beauty and played the prostitute because of your renown and poured out your prostitutions on everyone who passed by; his it was.

¹⁸ After having risen up, I will be traveling to my father, and will say to him, Father, I have sinned at heaven, and in your sight. ¹⁹ I am no more worthy to be called your son. Make me like one of your hired servants. \ulnone\nosupersub ²⁰ And standing up, he came to his father. But while he was still distant, far from him, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell upon his neck and kissed him. ²¹ But the son said to him, Father, I have sinned at heaven, and in your sight. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.

⁸ If we should say that we have no sin, we are misleading ourselves and the truth is not in us. ⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ¹⁰ If we should say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar and his word is not in us.

⁹ Unless Jehovah of hosts had left to us a seed, we should have been as Sodom, we should have been like Gomorrah.

¹³ And if there is yet a tenth in it, it also will in turn be eaten up. As a terebinth and as an oak, whose stock remains when they are felled, so the holy seed is the stock of it.

²² For though your people, Israel, be as the sand of the sea, a remnant of them will return. A destruction is determined, overflowing with righteousness.

¹¹ And it will happen in that day, that the Lord will set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, who will remain, from Assyria and from Egypt and from Pathros and from Cush and from Elam and from Shinar and from Hamath and from the islands of the sea. ¹² And he will set up an ensign for the nations and will assemble the outcasts of Israel and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.

⁶ Yet there will be gleanings left in it, as the shaking of an olive tree–two or three berries in the top of the uppermost bough, four or five in the outmost branches of a fruitful tree, says Jehovah, the God of Israel.

¹³ For thus it will be in the midst of the earth among the peoples, as the shaking of an olive tree, as the gleanings when the vintage is done.
¹⁴ These will lift up their voice. They will shout. For the majesty of Jehovah they cry aloud from the sea. ¹⁵ Therefore glorify you* Jehovah in the east, even the name of Jehovah, the God of Israel, in the isles of the sea.

⁵ For your maker is your husband. Jehovah of hosts is his name. And the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer. He will be called the God of the whole earth.

¹⁹ Your own wickedness will discipline you and your backslidings will reprove you. Know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and a bitter, that you have forsaken Jehovah your God and that my fear is not in you, says the Lord, Jehovah of hosts.

³ And I will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them again to their folds and they will be fruitful and multiply.

⁸ Behold, I will bring them from the north country and gather them from the outermost parts of the earth and with them the blind man and the lame man, the woman with child and she who travails with child together. They will return here a great company.
⁹ They will come with weeping. And I will lead them with supplications. I will cause them to walk by rivers of waters, in a straight way in which they will not stumble. For I am a father to Israel and Ephraim is my firstborn.
¹⁰ Hear the word of Jehovah, O you* nations and declare it in the isles afar off and say, He who scattered Israel will gather him and keep him, as a shepherd does his flock.

³² not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, because they did not continue in my covenant and I disregarded them, says Jehovah.

¹¹ For thus says the lord Jehovah: Behold, I myself, even I, will search for my sheep and will seek them out. ¹² As a shepherd seeks out his flock, in the day that he is among his sheep that are scattered abroad, so I will seek out my sheep and I will deliver them out of all places where they have been scattered in the cloudy and dark day.
¹³ And I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries and will bring them into their own land. And I will feed them upon the mountains of Israel, by the watercourses and in all the inhabited places of the country. ¹⁴ I will feed them with good pasture and their fold will be upon the mountains of the height of Israel. There they will lie down in a good fold and on fat pasture they will feed upon the mountains of Israel.

¹⁹ And I will betroth you to me everlasting. Yes, I will betroth you to me in righteousness and in justice and in loving kindness and in mercies. ²⁰ I will even betroth you to me in faithfulness and you will know Jehovah.

⁷ Awake, O sword, against my shepherd and against the man who is my companion, says Jehovah of hosts. Strike the shepherd and the sheep will be scattered. And I will turn my hand upon the little ones.
⁸ And it will happen, that in all the land, says Jehovah, two parts in it will be cut off and die, but the third will be left in it. ⁹ And I will bring the third part into the fire and will refine them as silver is refined and will try them as gold is tried. They will call on my name and I will hear them. I will say, It is my people and they will say, Jehovah is my God.

²⁷ Now Isaiah cries on behalf of Israel, ‘If the number of the sons of Israel is like the sand of the sea, only the remnant will be saved;

⁴ But what does the divine-answer say to him? ‘I have left to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to Baal.’ ⁵ Therefore so there has also become a remnant according to the chosen of grace in this current time. ⁶ But if it is by grace, it is no more from works, otherwise grace becomes grace no more. But if it is from works, no more is it grace; otherwise work is work no more.

¹⁴ but now your kingdom will not continue. Jehovah has sought for him a man after his own heart and Jehovah has appointed him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what Jehovah commanded you.

²¹ The lips of a righteous man feeds many, but the foolish die for lack of understanding.

²⁰ And though the Lord give you* the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your teachers will not be hidden anymore, but your eyes will see your teachers. ²¹ And your ears will hear a word behind you, saying, This is the way, walk you* in it when you* turn to the right hand and when you* turn to the left.

⁴ And I will set up shepherds over them who will feed them. And they will fear no more, nor be dismayed. Neither will any be lacking, says Jehovah.

²³ And I will set up one shepherd over them and he will feed them, even my servant David. He will feed them and he will be their shepherd.

²⁴ And my servant David will be king over them and they all will have one shepherd. They will also walk in my ordinances and observe my statutes and do them.

⁴ And he will stand and will feed his flock in the strength of Jehovah, in the majesty of the name of Jehovah his God and they will abide. For now he will be great to the ends of the earth. ⁵ And this man will be our peace.
When the Assyrian will come into our land and when he will tread in our palaces, then we will raise against him seven shepherds and eight principal men.

⁴² But the Lord said, Who then is the faithful and prudent steward, whom his lord will be designating over his bondservants, to give them their food-allowance in season?

¹ Assuredly, assuredly, I am saying to you, He who does not enter in through the door into the sheep’s pen, but goes up elsewhere, that man is a thief and a robber. ² But he who enters in through the door is the shepherd of the sheep. ³ The doorkeeper opens to him, and the sheep hear his voice and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. ⁴ And whenever he has cast out his own sheep, he travels before them and the sheep follow him, because they know his voice. ⁵ But they may never follow another man, but will be fleeing from him, because they do not know the voice of others.

¹⁵ Therefore when they had a meal, Jesus says to Simon Peter, Simon, Son of Jonah, do you ^{F} love me more-than these things?
He says to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.
He says to him, Feed my lambs.
¹⁶ He says to him again a second-time, Simon, Son of Jonah, do you ^{F} love me?
He says to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.
He says to him, Shepherd my sheep.
¹⁷ He says to him the third-time, Simon, Son of Jonah, Do you ^{F} love me?
Peter was sorrowful because he said to him the third-time, Do you ^{F} love me like a friend? And he said to him, Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you like a friend.
Jesus says to him, Feed my sheep.

²⁸ Therefore, take-heed to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit placed you as overseers, to shepherd the congregation of the Lord and God, which the Lord acquired through his own blood.

⁶ Now we are speaking wisdom among the mature ones; yet a wisdom not of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are being done-away-with;

¹² But we did not receive the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God; in order that we might know the things which were granted to us by God. ¹³ We also speak these things, not in the taught things from mankind, in words of wisdom, but in the taught things from the Holy Spirit; combining together with spiritual words of wisdom, spiritual things.

¹ And brethren, I was not able to speak to you as to spiritual people, but as to fleshly ones, as to infants in Christ. ² I gave you milk to drink and not food, for you were not yet able to eat it. But still you are not able even now,

¹¹ And he gave some to be : the apostles, and the prophets, and the evangelists, and the shepherds and teachers ¹² for the equipping of the holy-ones, for the work of the service, for the building up of the body of the Christ,

¹² For you also ought to be teachers by now because of the time, but you again have need of one to teach you what are the fundamental principles of the beginning oracles of God, and have become ones having need of milk and not of solid nourishment. ¹³ For everyone who partakes of milk is inexperienced of the word of righteousness; for he is an infant. ¹⁴ But solid nourishment is for the mature ones, from those who, through their habit, have had their senses exercised to the discerning of both good and evil.

² as newborn babies, long-for the logical milk which has no treachery, in order that you may grow in it;

¹ I am encouraging the elders the ones among you, (the fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of the Christ, also the partner of the glory which is about to be revealed). ² Shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising the oversight, not by compulsion, but willfully, nor covetously, but eagerly; ³ nor like one lording it over his inheritances, but by becoming examples to the flock. ⁴ And when the Chief-Shepherd is made manifest, you will be getting the unfading crown of glory.

²² The little one will become a thousand and the small one a strong nation. I, Jehovah, will hasten it in its time.

⁴ And they will build the old wastes. They will raise up the former desolations and they will repair the waste cities, the desolations of generations and generations.

¹⁷ For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth and the former things will not be remembered, nor come into mind.

¹ Jehovah says thus, Heaven is my throne and the earth is my footstool. What manner of house will you* build to me and what place will be my rest? ² For all these things my hand has made and all these things came to be, says Jehovah.
But to this man I will look, even to him who is poor and of a crushed spirit and who trembles at my word.

⁴ Do not trust in lying words, saying, The temple of Jehovah, the temple of Jehovah, the temple of Jehovah, are these.

¹⁹ And out of them will proceed thanksgiving and the voice of those who make merry. And I will multiply them and they will not be few. I will also glorify them and they will not be small.

²⁷ Behold, the days come, says Jehovah, that I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man and with the seed of beast.

⁸ But you*, O mountains of Israel, you* will shoot forth your* branches and yield your* fruit to my people Israel, for they are at hand to come. ⁹ For, behold, I am for you* and I will turn into you* and you* will be tilled and sown.
¹⁰ And I will multiply men upon you*, all the house of Israel, even all of it and the cities will be inhabited and the waste places will be built. ¹¹ And I will multiply upon you* man and beast and they will increase and be fruitful. And I will cause you* to be inhabited according to your* former estate and will do better to you* than at your* beginnings. And you* will know that I am Jehovah.
¹² Yes, I will cause men to walk upon you*, even my people Israel and they will possess you and you will be their inheritance and you will no more hereafter bereave them of sons.

²⁶ Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them. It will be an everlasting covenant with them and I will place them and multiply them and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them everlasting.

¹⁰ Yet the number of the sons of Israel will be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered. And it will happen that, in the place where it was said to them, You* are not my people, it will be said to them, The sons of the living God. ¹¹ And the sons of Judah and the sons of Israel will be gathered together and they will appoint themselves one head and will go up from the land, for great will be the day of Jezreel.

⁹ For behold, I will command and I will sift the house of Israel among all the nations, just as grain is sifted in a sieve, yet the least kernel will not fall upon the earth.

¹⁴ And I will bring back the captivity of my people Israel and they will build the waste cities and inhabit them and they will plant vineyards and drink the wine of it. They will also make gardens and eat the fruit of them. ¹⁵ And I will plant them upon their land and they will no more be plucked up out of their land which I have given them, says Jehovah your God.

¹¹ In that day you will not be put to shame for all your practices, in which you have transgressed against me. For then I will take away out of the midst of you those who rejoice in your pride and you will no more be haughty in my holy mountain.

⁴ Jehovah of hosts says thus: There will yet old men and old women dwell in the streets of Jerusalem, every man with his staff in his hand for very age. ⁵ And the streets of the city will be full of boys and girls playing in the streets of it.

⁷ And Ephraim will be like a mighty man and their heart will rejoice as through wine. Yes, their sons will see it and rejoice. Their heart will be glad in Jehovah.
⁸ I will whistle for them and gather them. For I have redeemed them and they will increase as they have increased. ⁹ And I will sow them among the peoples and they will remember me in far countries. And they will live with their sons and will return.

¹¹ and Josiah fathered Jechoniah and his brethren, at the time of the exile of Babylon.

⁹ Do not think to say among yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; for I say to you, that God is able to lift up children out of these stones for Abraham.

²⁰ Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you Jews say, that in Jerusalem is the place where it is essential to worship.
²¹ Jesus says to her, Woman, believe me, the hour is coming, when you will be worshiping the Father, neither in this mountain, nor in Jerusalem. ²² You worship what you do not know. We worship what we know, because salvation is from the Jews. ²³ But the hour is coming and now is, when the true worshipers will be worshiping the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father also is seeking such who are worshiping him. ²⁴ God is a Spirit, and it is essential for those who are worshiping him to worship in spirit and truth.

⁹ This tabernacle, (which is a figure toward the present time); according to which both gifts and sacrifices are offered, is not able to complete he who is giving-divine service to God according to the conscience, ¹⁰ being only fleshly ordinances, (upon the basis of foods, drinks and assorted ceremonial washings), laid upon us till a time of reformation.
¹¹ But Christ came as a high-priest of the future good things, through the greater and more complete tabernacle, not made with hands, that is, not of this creation, ¹² nor through the blood of male-goats and calves, but through his own blood, entered in once for all into the holy of holies, having found everlasting redemption.

⁸ After saying this above, You do not wish, nor were you delighted in sacrifice and offering and whole burnt-offerings and sacrifices concerning sin, (which are offered according to the law), ⁹ then he has said, ‘Behold, I am coming to do your will, O God.’He assassinates
the first covenant, in order that he should establish the second covenant,

¹⁹ Therefore brethren, having boldness for the entrance into the holy-places by the blood of Jesus, ²⁰ a way which he inaugurated for us, a fresh and living way, through the curtain, that is, his flesh; ²¹ and having a great priest over the house of God;

²¹ And Jehovah smelled the sweet aroma. And Jehovah said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for the sake of man, because the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth. I will not again kill* everything living, as I have done.

³⁹ And it will be to you* for a hem, that you* may look upon it and remember all the commandments of Jehovah and do them and that you* not follow after your* own heart and your* own eyes, after which you* use to play the prostitute,

²⁹ The secret things belong to Jehovah our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our sons until everlasting, that we may do all the words of this law.

¹⁹ But it happened, when the judge was dead, that they turned back and dealt more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them and to bow down to them. They did not cease from their practices, nor from their stubborn way.

⁸ and might not be as their fathers: a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that did not set their heart aright and whose spirit was not steadfast with God.

³ Glorious things are spoken of you, O city of God. Selah.

² And it will happen in the latter days, that the mountain of Jehovah's house will be established on the top of the mountains and will be exalted above the hills and all nations will flow to it. ³ And many peoples will go and say, Come and let us go up to the mountain of Jehovah, to the house of the God of Jacob and he will teach us of his ways and we will walk in his paths. For out of Zion will go forth the law and the word of Jehovah from Jerusalem.
⁴ And he will judge between the nations and will decide concerning many peoples and they will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning-hooks. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, neither will they learn war any more.

¹ In the year that king Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up and his train filled the temple.

⁸ Yes, in the way of your judgments, O Jehovah, we have waited for you, to your name. Even to your memorial, is the desire of our soul.

¹⁸ Lift up your eyes all around and behold. All these gather themselves together and come to you. As I live, says Jehovah, you will surely clothe you with them all, as with an ornament and gird yourself with them, like a bride. ¹⁹ For, as for your waste and your desolate places and your land that has been destroyed, surely now you will be too narrow for the inhabitants and those who swallowed you up will be far away.
²⁰ The sons of your bereavement will yet say in your ears, The place is too narrow for me. Give a place to me that I may dwell. ²¹ Then you will say in your heart, Who has fathered these for me, seeing I have been bereaved of my sons and am solitary, an exile and wandering to and fro? And who has brought up these? Behold, I was left alone, these, where were they?
²² The lord Jehovah says thus: Behold, I will lift up my hand to the nations and set up my ensign to the peoples. And they will bring your sons in their bosom and your daughters will be carried upon their shoulders. ²³ And kings will be your nursing fathers and their queens your nursing mothers. They will bow down to you with their faces to the earth and lick the dust of your feet. And you will know that I am Jehovah and those who wait for me will not be put to shame.

⁶ Also the foreigners who join themselves to Jehovah, to minister to him and to love the name of Jehovah, to be his servants, everyone who keeps the Sabbath from profaning it and holds fast my covenant,

¹⁹ So they will fear the name of Jehovah from the west and his glory from the rising of the sun. For he will come as a rushing stream, which the breath of Jehovah drives.

³ And nations will come to your light and kings to the brightness of your rising. ⁴ Lift up your eyes all around and see. They all gather themselves together. They come to you. Your sons will come from far and your daughters will be carried in the arms. ⁵ Then you will see and be radiant and your heart will thrill and be enlarged, because the abundance of the sea will be turned to you. The wealth of the nations will come to you. ⁶ The multitude of camels will cover you. The dromedaries of Midian and Ephah, all those from Sheba will come. They will bring gold and frankincense and will proclaim the praises of Jehovah. ⁷ All the flocks of Kedar will be gathered together to you. The rams of Nebaioth will minister to you. They will come up with acceptance on my altar and I will glorify the house of my glory.
⁸ Who are these that fly as a cloud and as the doves to their windows? ⁹ Surely the isles will wait for me and the ships of Tarshish first, to bring your sons from far, their silver and their gold with them, for the name of Jehovah your God and for the Holy One of Israel, because he has glorified you.

¹ Jehovah says thus, Heaven is my throne and the earth is my footstool. What manner of house will you* build to me and what place will be my rest?

²⁰ And they will bring all your* brothers out of all the nations for an oblation to Jehovah, upon horses and in chariots and in litters and upon mules and upon dromedaries, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, says Jehovah, as the sons of Israel bring their oblation in a clean vessel into the house of Jehovah.

¹⁴ but have walked after the stubbornness of their own heart and after the Baals, which their fathers taught them.

⁸ Yet they obeyed not, nor inclined their ear, but walked each one in the stubbornness of his evil heart. Therefore I brought upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do, but they did them not.

²¹ Do not abhor us. For your name's sake, do not disgrace the throne of your glory. Remember, do not break your covenant with us.

¹² And you* have done evil more than your* fathers, for, behold, you* walk each one after the stubbornness of his evil heart, so that you* listen not to me.

¹² A glorious throne, set on high from the beginning, is the place of our sanctuary.

¹² But they say, It is in vain. For we will walk after our own devices and we will do everyone according to the stubbornness of his evil heart.

²³ Jehovah of hosts says thus, the God of Israel: Yet again they will use this speech in the land of Judah and in the cities of it when I will bring again their captivity: Jehovah bless you, O habitation of righteousness, O mountain of holiness.

²⁶ And above the expanse that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone. And upon the likeness of the throne was a likeness as the appearance of a man upon it above.

⁷ And he said to me, Son of man, this is the place of my throne and the place of the soles of my feet, where I will dwell in the midst of the sons of Israel everlasting. And the house of Israel will no more defile my holy name, neither they, nor their kings, by their prostitution and by the dead bodies of their kings in their high places,

¹ But in the latter days it will happen, that the mountain of Jehovah's house will be established on the top of the mountains and it will be exalted above the hills and peoples will flow to it.
² And many nations will go and say, Come and let us go up to the mountain of Jehovah and to the house of the God of Jacob and he will teach us of his ways and we will walk in his paths. For out of Zion will go forth the law and the word of Jehovah from Jerusalem.
³ And he will judge between many peoples and will decide concerning strong nations afar off. And they will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning-hooks. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, nor will they learn war any more.
⁴ But they will sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree and none will make them afraid. For the mouth of Jehovah of hosts has spoken it. ⁵ For all the peoples walk each one in the name of his god. And we will walk in the name of Jehovah our God everlasting and forever.

¹¹ And many nations will join themselves to Jehovah in that day and will be my people and I will dwell in the midst of you. And you will know that Jehovah of hosts has sent me to you.

²⁰ Jehovah of hosts says thus: Peoples will yet come and the inhabitants of many cities. ²¹ And the inhabitants of one city will go to another, saying, Let us go speedily to entreat the favor of Jehovah and to seek Jehovah of hosts. I will go also. ²² Yes, many peoples and strong nations will come to seek Jehovah of hosts in Jerusalem and to entreat the favor of Jehovah.
²³ Jehovah of hosts says thus: In those days, ten men will take hold, out of all the languages of the nations, they will take hold of the skirt of him who is a Jew, saying, We will go with you*, for we have heard that God is with you*.

²¹ because having known God, they did not glorify him as God, nor gave-thanks, but became-futile in their reasonings and their heart was darkened without understanding.

¹⁴ For sin will not have lordship over you; for you are not under the law, but under grace.

⁴ For the weapons of our warfare are not fleshly, but are mighty in God, toward the demolition of strongholds, ⁵ demolishing evil reasonings and every exalted thing which is lifting itself up against the knowledge of God and capturing every device of the Adversary to the obedience of the Christ;

²⁶ But the Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of all of us.

¹⁷ Therefore I am saying and testifying this in the Lord: you are to walk no longer as the rest of the Gentiles are also walking, in the futility of their mind, ¹⁸ having been darkened in their mind, having been alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance which is in them, because of the hardening of their heart, ¹⁹ who are apathetic, gave themselves up to unbridled-lusts, for the working of all uncleanness in greed.

¹¹ And it will happen in that day, that the Lord will set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, who will remain, from Assyria and from Egypt and from Pathros and from Cush and from Elam and from Shinar and from Hamath and from the islands of the sea. ¹² And he will set up an ensign for the nations and will assemble the outcasts of Israel and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth. ¹³ Also the envy of Ephraim will depart and those who besiege Judah will be cut off. Ephraim will not envy Judah and Judah will not besiege Ephraim.

¹⁵ but, As Jehovah lives who brought up the sons of Israel from the land of the north and from all the countries where he had driven them. And I will bring them again into their land that I gave to their fathers.

³ For behold, the days come, says Jehovah, that I will turn again the captivity of my people Israel and Judah, says Jehovah and I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers and they will possess it.

⁴ In those days and in that time, says Jehovah, the sons of Israel will come, they and the sons of Judah together. They will go on their way weeping and will seek Jehovah their God.

²⁰ In those days and in that time, says Jehovah, the iniquity of Israel will be sought for and there will be none and the sins of Judah and they will not be found. For I will pardon those whom I leave as a remnant.

¹⁶ And you, son of man, take one stick and write upon it, For Judah and for the sons of Israel his companions. Then take another stick and write upon it, For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim and for all the house of Israel his companions. ¹⁷ And join them one to another into one stick for yourself, that they may become one in your hand.
¹⁸ And when the sons of your people will speak to you, saying, Will you not show us what you mean by these? ¹⁹ say to them, The lord Jehovah says thus: Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim and the tribes of Israel his companions and I will put them with it, even with the stick of Judah and make them one stick and they will be one in my hand. ²⁰ And the sticks on which you write will be in your hand before their eyes.
²¹ And say to them, The lord Jehovah says thus: Behold, I will take the sons of Israel from among the nations where they have gone and will gather them on every side and bring them into their own land. ²² And I will make them one nation in the land, upon the mountains of Israel and one king will be king to them all. And they will no more be two nations, nor will they be divided into two kingdoms any more at all.

²⁵ Therefore thus says the lord Jehovah: Now I will bring back the captivity of Jacob and have mercy upon the whole house of Israel. And I will be jealous for my holy name.
²⁶ And they will bear their shame and all their trespasses by which they have trespassed against me, when they will dwell securely in their land. And none will make them afraid ²⁷ when I have brought them back from the peoples and gathered them out of their enemies' lands and am made holy in them in the sight of many nations.
²⁸ And they will know that I am Jehovah their God, in that I caused them to go into captivity among the nations and have gathered them to their own land. And I will leave none of them any more there,

¹¹ And the sons of Judah and the sons of Israel will be gathered together and they will appoint themselves one head and will go up from the land, for great will be the day of Jezreel.

¹² Ephraim encompasses me around with falsehood and the house of Israel with deceit, but Judah yet rules with God and is faithful with the Holy One.

¹⁵ And I will plant them upon their land and they will no more be plucked up out of their land which I have given them, says Jehovah your God.

⁶ And I will strengthen the house of Judah and I will save the house of Joseph and I will bring them back. For I have mercy upon them and they will be as though I had not cast them off. For I am Jehovah their God and I will hear them.

²⁴ Yes, they despised the desirable land. They did not believe his word,

³⁵ The wise will inherit glory, but shame will be the promotion of fools.

⁸ But now, O Jehovah, you are our Father. We are the clay and you our potter and we are all the work of your hand.

⁴ Will you not from this time cry to me, My Father, you are the guide of my youth?

⁷ How can I pardon you? Your sons have forsaken me and sworn by those who are no gods. When I had fed them to the full, they committed adultery and assembled themselves in troops at the prostitutes' houses.

¹⁰ Many shepherds have destroyed my vineyard. They have trodden my portion under foot. They have made my desirable portion a desolate wilderness.

³⁹ And I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear me forever, for the good of them and of their sons after them.
⁴⁰ And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from following them, to do them good. And I will put my fear in their hearts, that they may not depart from me.

⁶ I swore to them in that day, to bring them forth out of the land of Egypt into a land that I had searched out for them, flowing with milk and honey, which is the glory of all lands.

⁹ And out of one of them came out a little horn, which grew exceedingly great, toward the south and toward the east and toward the glorious land.

¹⁶ But he who comes against him will do according to his own will and none will stand before him. And he will stand in the glorious land and in his hand will be destruction.

⁴¹ He will also enter into the glorious land and many countries will be overthrown. But these will be delivered out of his hand: Edom and Moab and the chief of the sons of Ammon.

⁴⁵ And he will plant the tents of his palace between the sea and the glorious holy mountain, yet he will come to his end and none will help him.

⁸ How shall I give you up, Ephraim? How shall I cast you off, Israel? How shall I make you as Admah? How shall I set you as Zeboiim? My heart is turned within me. My compassions are kindled together.

⁸ Therefore, do not be similar to them, for your Father knows what things you have need of before you ask him. ⁹ Therefore pray thus: our Father, the one in the heavens, let your name be made holy.

¹¹ He came to his own and those who were his own did not receive him. ¹² But as many as received him, he gave to them the authority to become children of God, to the believing ones in his name, ¹³ who were born, not from bloods, nor from the will of the flesh, nor from the will of man, but from God.

²⁶ For you are all sons of God, through the faith, in Christ Jesus.

¹ Behold what sort of love the Father has given to us, in order that we might be called children of God. Because of this, the world does not know you, because it did not know him. ² Beloved, we are now the children of God and it was not yet manifested what we will be. ² Lift up your eyes to the bare heights and see. Where have you not been lain with? By the ways you have sat for them, as an Arabian in the wilderness and you have polluted the land with your prostitutions and with your wickedness.

⁸ And I saw, when, for this very cause that backsliding Israel had committed adultery, I had put her away and given her a document of divorcement, yet treacherous Judah her sister did not fear, but she also went and played the prostitute.
⁹ And it happened through the lightness of her prostitution, that the land was polluted and she committed adultery with stones and with stocks. ¹⁰ And yet for all this her treacherous sister Judah has not returned to me with her whole heart, but in pretense, says Jehovah.

¹¹ For the house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt very treacherously against me, says Jehovah.

¹⁵ But you trusted in your beauty and played the prostitute because of your renown and poured out your prostitutions on everyone who passed by; his it was. ¹⁶ And you took of your garments and made high places for you, decked with various colors and played the prostitute upon them, things which should not come, nor should it be.
¹⁷ You also took your fair jewels of my gold and of my silver, which I had given you and made for you images of men and played the prostitute with them. ¹⁸ And you took your embroidered garments and covered them and set my oil and my incense before them. ¹⁹ My bread also which I gave you, fine flour and oil and honey, with which I fed you, you even set it before them for a sweet aroma and thus it was, says the lord Jehovah.
²⁰ Moreover you have taken your sons and your daughters, whom you have borne to me and you have sacrificed these to them to be devoured. Were your prostitutions a small matter, ²¹ that you have slain my children and delivered them up, in causing them to pass through the fire to them?
²² And in all your abominations and your prostitutions you have not remembered the days of your youth when you were naked and bare and were weltering in your blood.
²³ And it has happen according to all your wickedness, (woe, woe to you! says the lord Jehovah), ²⁴ that you have built yourself a vaulted place and have made you a lofty place in every street. ²⁵ You have built your lofty place at the head of every way and have made your beauty an abomination. And have opened your feet to everyone who passed by and multiplied your prostitution. ²⁶ You have also committed fornication with the Egyptians, your neighbors, great of flesh and have multiplied your prostitution, to provoke me to anger.
²⁷ Behold therefore, I have stretched out my hand over you and have diminished your portion and delivered you to the will of those who hate you, the daughters of the Philistines, who are ashamed of your lewd way. ²⁸ You have played the prostitute also with the Assyrians, because you were insatiable. Yes, you have played the prostitute with them and yet you were not satisfied. ²⁹ You have moreover multiplied your prostitution to the land of traffic, to Chaldea and yet you were not satisfied with this.
³⁰ How weak is your heart, says the lord Jehovah, seeing you do all these things, the work of an impudent prostitute, ³¹ in that you build your vaulted place at the head of every way and make your lofty place in every street. And have not even been as a prostitute, in that you scorn hire. ³² A wife who commits adultery, who takes strangers instead of her husband!
³³ They give gifts to all prostitutes, but you give your gifts to all your lovers and bribe them, that they may come to you on every side for your prostitutions. ³⁴ And you are different from other women in your prostitutions, in that none follows you to play the prostitute. And in your giving a hire and no hire is given to you, therefore you are different.
³⁵ Therefore, O prostitute, hear the word of Jehovah. ³⁶ The lord Jehovah says thus: Because your filthiness was poured out and your nakedness uncovered through your prostitutions with your lovers and because of all the idols of your abominations and for the blood of your sons, that you gave to them, ³⁷ therefore, behold, I will gather all your lovers, with whom you have taken pleasure and all those whom you have loved, with all those whom you have hated, I will even gather them against you on every side. And I will uncover your nakedness to them, that they may see all your nakedness.
³⁸ And I will judge you, as women who break wedlock and shed blood are judged. And I will bring upon you the blood of wrath and jealousy. ³⁹ I will also give you into their hand and they will throw down your vaulted place and break down your lofty places. And they will strip you of your clothes and take your fair jewels and they will leave you naked and bare.
⁴⁰ They will also bring up a company against you and they will stone you with stones and thrust you through with their swords. ⁴¹ And they will burn your houses with fire and execute judgments upon you in the sight of many women. And I will cause you to cease from playing the prostitute and you will also give no wage any more. ⁴² So I will cause my wrath toward you to rest and my jealousy will depart from you and I will be quiet and will no more be angry.
⁴³ Because you have not remembered the days of your youth, but have raged against me in all these things, therefore, behold, I also will bring your way upon your head, says the lord Jehovah. And you will not commit this lewdness with all your abominations.
⁴⁴ Behold, everyone who uses proverbs will use this proverb against you, saying, As is the mother, so is her daughter. ⁴⁵ You are the daughter of your mother, who loathes her husband and her sons. And you are the sister of your sisters, who loathed their husbands and their sons. Your* mother was a Hittite and your* father an Amorite. ⁴⁶ And your elder sister is Samaria, who dwells at your left hand, she and her daughters. And your younger sister, who dwells at your right hand, is Sodom and her daughters.
⁴⁷ Yet you have not walked in their ways, nor done according to their abominations, but, like it was a very little thing, you were more corrupt than they in all your ways.
⁴⁸ As I live, says the lord Jehovah, Sodom your sister has not done, she nor her daughters, as you have done, you and your daughters. ⁴⁹ Behold, this was the iniquity of your sister Sodom: pride, fullness of bread and prosperous ease was in her and in her daughters and she did not strengthen the hand of a poor and needy man. ⁵⁰ And they were haughty and committed abomination before me. Therefore I took them away as I saw fit.

¹ And Jehovah said to me, Go again, love a woman beloved of her friend and an adulteress, even as Jehovah loves the sons of Israel, though they turn to other gods and love cakes of raisins.

⁷ They have dealt treacherously against Jehovah, for they have borne strange sons. Now the new moon will devour them with their fields.

⁷ But like Adam they have transgressed the covenant. There they have dealt treacherously against me.

¹¹ Judah has dealt treacherously and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem. For Judah has profaned the holiness of Jehovah which he loves and has married the daughter of a foreign god.

³² And the messenger of Jehovah said to him, Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out as an adversary, because your way is perverse before me.

²⁷ He sings before men and says, I have sinned and perverted what was right and it did not profit me.

⁹ He who walks uprightly walks securely, but he who perverts his ways will be known.

³ The foolishness of a man subverts his way and his heart rages against Jehovah.

² They have gone up to the house and to Dibon, to the high places, to weep. Moab wails over Nebo and over Medeba. On all their heads is baldness. Every beard is cut off.

¹⁰ For you have forgotten the God of your salvation and have not been mindful of the rock of your strength.
Therefore you plant pleasant plants and set it with foreign slips.

³² Can a virgin forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? Yet my people have forgotten me days without number.

¹⁵ Why do you cry for your hurt? Your pain is incurable, for the greatness of your iniquity. Because your sins were increased, I have done these things to you.
¹⁶ Therefore all those who devour you will be devoured and all your adversaries, every one of them, will go into captivity. And those who despoil you will be a spoil and all who prey upon you I will give for a prey. ¹⁷ For I will restore health to you and I will heal you of your wounds, says Jehovah, because they have called you an outcast, saying, It is Zion, whom no man seeks after.

⁴ In those days and in that time, says Jehovah, the sons of Israel will come, they and the sons of Judah together. They will go on their way weeping and will seek Jehovah their God. ⁵ They will inquire concerning Zion with their faces toward it, saying, Come and join yourselves to Jehovah in an everlasting covenant that will not be forgotten.

¹⁶ But those of them who escape will escape and will be on the mountains like doves of the valleys. All of them moaning, each one in his iniquity.

³⁵ Therefore thus says the lord Jehovah: Because you have forgotten me and cast me behind your back, therefore you also bear your lewdness and your prostitutions.

¹⁴ For Israel has forgotten his maker and built palaces. And Judah has multiplied fortified cities. But I will send a fire upon his cities and it will devour the castles of it.

⁶ According to their pasture, so they were filled. They were filled and their heart was exalted. Therefore they have forgotten me.

⁹ Hear this, I beseech you*, you* heads of the house of Jacob and rulers of the house of Israel, who abhor justice and pervert all equity.

¹⁰ And I will pour upon the house of David and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplication. And they will look to me whom they have pierced. And they will mourn for him, as a man mourns for his only son and will be in bitterness for him, as a man who is in bitterness for his firstborn.
¹¹ In that day there will be a great mourning in Jerusalem, as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the valley of Megiddo. ¹² And the land will mourn, every family apart, the family of the house of David apart and their wives apart, the family of the house of Nathan apart and their wives apart, ¹³ the family of the house of Levi apart and their wives apart, the Shimeite family apart and their wives apart, ¹⁴ all the families that remain, every family apart and their wives apart.

¹⁰ For the sorrow which is according to the will of God is working unregrettable repentance for salvation, but the sorrow of the world is working death.

⁴ Draw to me, we will run after you. The king has brought me into his chambers. We will be glad and rejoice in you. We will make mention of your love more than of wine. They love you in uprightness.

⁸ In measure, in sending it forth, you contend with it. He has removed with his rough blast in the day of the east wind.

¹⁷ For I will restore health to you and I will heal you of your wounds, says Jehovah, because they have called you an outcast, saying, It is Zion, whom no man seeks after.

¹⁸ I have surely heard Ephraim sympathize within himself saying, You have disciplined me and I was disciplined as a calf unaccustomed to the yoke. Turn me back and I will be turned back, for you are Jehovah my God.

⁶ Behold, I will bring it health and cure and I will cure them. And I will reveal to them abundance of peace and truth.

⁵ Afterward the sons of Israel will return and seek Jehovah their God and David their king and will come with fear to Jehovah and to his goodness in the latter days.

¹ Come and let us return to Jehovah, for he has torn and he will heal us. He has struck and he will bind us up. ² After two days he will revive us. On the third day he will raise us up and we will live before him.

⁴ Yet I am Jehovah your God from the land of Egypt and you will know no god but me and besides me there is no savior.

⁴ I will heal their backsliding. I will love them freely. For my anger is turned away from him.

⁸ Ephraim will say, What have I to do any more with idols? I have answered and will regard him. I am like a green fir tree. From me, your fruit is found.

⁹ And I will bring the third part into the fire and will refine them as silver is refined and will try them as gold is tried. They will call on my name and I will hear them. I will say, It is my people and they will say, Jehovah is my God.

⁸ Salvation belongs to Jehovah. Your blessing be upon your people. Selah.

³⁹ But the salvation of the righteous is from Jehovah. He is their stronghold in the time of trouble, ⁴⁰ and Jehovah helps them and rescues them. He rescues them from sinners and saves them, because they have taken refuge in him.

¹ I will lift up my eyes to the mountains. From where will my help come? ² My help is from Jehovah, who made heaven and earth.

² Behold, God is my salvation. I will trust and will not be afraid, for Jehovah, even Jehovah, is my strength and song and he has become my salvation.

¹¹ I, even I, am Jehovah and besides me there is no savior.

⁹ Those who fashion a graven image are all of them vanity. And the things that they delight in will not profit. And their own witnesses do not see, nor know, that they may be put to shame.

¹⁵ Verily you are a God who hides yourself, O God of Israel, the Savior.

¹⁷ But Israel will be saved by Jehovah with an everlasting salvation. You* will not be put to shame nor confounded world without end.

²⁰ Assemble yourselves and come, draw near together, you* that are escaped of the nations. They have no knowledge that carry the wood of their graven image and pray to a god that cannot save.

⁷ They bear it upon the shoulder. They carry it and set it in its place and it stands. From its place it will not remove. Yes, he may cry to it, yet it cannot answer, nor save him out of his trouble.
⁸ Remember this and show yourselves men. Bring it again to mind, O you* transgressors.

¹ Who is this who comes from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah, this who is glorious in his apparel, marching in the greatness of his strength? I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save.

¹⁴ Every man has become stupid, without knowledge. Every goldsmith is put to shame by his graven image. For his molten image is falsehood and there is no breath in them. ¹⁵ They are vanity, a work of delusion. In the time of their visitation they will perish.
¹⁶ The portion of Jacob is not like these. For he is the former of all things and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance. Jehovah of hosts is his name.

⁸ O you hope of Israel, the Savior of it in the time of trouble, why should you be as a traveler in the land and as a wayfaring man who turns aside to abide for a night?

¹⁴ Heal me, O Jehovah and I will be healed. Save me and I will be saved, for you are my praise.

⁷ But I will have mercy upon the house of Judah and will save them by Jehovah their God and will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, by horses, nor by horsemen.

⁸ Those who regard lying vanities forsake their own mercy. ⁹ But I will sacrifice to you with the voice of thanksgiving. I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of Jehovah.

²² You worship what you do not know. We worship what we know, because salvation is from the Jews.

¹³ For according to the number of your cities are your gods, O Judah and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem you* have set up altars to the shameful thing, even altars to burn incense to Baal.

⁶¹ Then you will remember your ways and be ashamed, when you will receive your sisters, your elder sisters and your younger and I will give them to you for daughters, but not by your covenant.

⁶³ that you may remember and be confounded and never open your mouth any more, because of your shame, when I have forgiven you all that you have done, says the lord Jehovah.

⁸ For she did not know that I gave her the grain and the new wine and the oil and multiplied to her silver and gold, which they used for Baal.

¹⁰ I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness. I saw your* fathers as the first ripe in the fig tree at its first season. But they came to Baal-peor and consecrated themselves to the shameful thing and became abominable like what they loved.

⁶ It will also be carried to Assyria for a present to King Jareb. Ephraim will receive shame and Israel will be ashamed of his own counsel.

¹⁷ Then my anger will be kindled against them in that day and I will forsake them and I will hide my face from them and they will be devoured and many evils and troubles will come upon them, so that they will say in that day, Have not these evils come upon us because our God is not among us? ¹⁸ And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evil which they will have worked, in that they have turned to other gods.

² And you* will make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land. You* will break down their altars. But you* have not listened to my voice. Why have you* done this?

⁶ and I said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to you, my God, for our iniquities are increased over our head and our guiltiness has grown up to the heavens. ⁷ Since the days of our fathers we have been exceedingly guilty to this day. And for our iniquities have we, our kings and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity and to plunder and to confusion of face, as it is this day.
⁸ And now for a little moment favor has been shown from Jehovah our God, to leave us a remnant to escape and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes and give us a little reviving in our bondage. ⁹ For we are bondmen, yet our God has not forsaken us in our bondage, but has extended loving kindness to us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God and to repair the ruins of it and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem. ¹⁰ And now, O our God, what will we say after this? For we have forsaken your commandments, ¹¹ which you have commanded by your servants the prophets, saying, The land, to which you* go to possess it, is an unclean land through the uncleanness of the peoples of the lands, through their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their filthiness. ¹² Now therefore do not give your* daughters to their sons, neither take their daughters to your* sons, nor seek their peace or their prosperity forever, that you* may be strong and eat the good of the land and leave it for an inheritance to your* sons until everlasting.
¹³ And after all that has come upon us for our evil deeds and for our great guilt, seeing that you, our God, have punished us less than our iniquities deserve and have given us such a remnant, ¹⁴ will we again break your commandments and make a marriage-agreement with the peoples who do these abominations? Would you not be angry with us till you had consumed us, so that there should be no remnant, nor any to escape?
¹⁵ O Jehovah, the God of Israel, you are righteous, for we are left a remnant that has escaped, as it is this day. Behold, we are before you in our guiltiness, for none can stand before you because of this.

³² Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty and the awesome God, who keeps covenant and loving kindness, do not let all the travail seem little before you, that has come upon us, on our kings, on our rulers and on our priests and on our prophets and on our fathers and on all your people, since the time of the kings of Assyria to this day.
³³ However you are just in all that has come upon us, for you have dealt truly, but we have done wickedly, ³⁴ neither have our kings, our rulers, our priests, nor our fathers, kept your law, nor listened to your commandments and your testimonies with which you testified against them.

⁷ Our fathers did not understand your wonders in Egypt. They did not remember the multitude of your loving kindnesses, but were rebellious at the sea, even at the Red Sea.

²⁹ Let my adversaries be clothed with dishonor and let them cover themselves with their own shame as with a robe.

¹³ Neither have I obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined my ear to those who instructed me!

¹¹ Behold, all you* who kindle a fire, who gird yourselves about with firebrands, walk you* in the flame of your* fire and among the brands that you* have kindled. This you* will have from my hand. You* will lie down in sorrow.

¹⁷ Have you not procured this to yourself, in that you have forsaken Jehovah your God when he led you by the way?

²⁶ As the thief is shamed when he is found, so is the house of Israel shamed, they, their kings, their rulers and their priests and their prophets,

²⁶ O daughter of my people, gird with sackcloth and wallow yourself in ashes. You make mourning, as for an only son, a most bitter lamentation. For the destroyer will suddenly come upon us.

²¹ I spoke to you in your prosperity, but you said, I will not hear. This has been your manner from your youth, that you obeyed not my voice.

⁷ Our fathers sinned and are not and we have borne their iniquities.

¹⁶ The crown has fallen from our head. Woe to us! For we have sinned.

¹⁸ They will also gird themselves with sackcloth and horror will cover them. And shame will be upon all faces and baldness upon all their heads.

³² I do this not for your* sake, says the lord Jehovah; be it known to you*. Be ashamed and confounded for your* ways, O house of Israel.

⁶ nor have we listened to your servants the prophets, who spoke in your name to our kings, our rulers and our fathers and to all the people of the land.
⁷ O Lord, righteousness belongs to you, but to us shame of face, as at this day, to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to all Israel, who are near and who are far off, through all the countries where you have driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against you.
⁸ O Lord, to us belongs shame of face, to our kings, to our rulers and to our fathers, because we have sinned against you. ⁹ To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgiveness, for we have rebelled against him, ¹⁰ nor have we obeyed the voice of Jehovah our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.

² And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth will awake, some to everlasting life and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

²¹ Therefore, what fruit were you having then in the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death.
