¹² She has wearied herself with toil, yet her great scum does not go forth out of her, her scum by fire.

⁵ And Jehovah saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only continually evil. ⁶ And Jehovah regretted that he had made man on the earth and it grieved him in his heart. ⁷ And Jehovah said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the ground, from man to beast, to creeping things and birds of the heavens, because I regret that I have made them.

²¹ And Jehovah smelled the sweet aroma. And Jehovah said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for the sake of man, because the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth. I will not again kill* everything living, as I have done.

⁵ Why will you* still be stricken, that you* revolt more and more? The whole head is sick and the whole heart faint.

¹³ You are wearied in the multitude of your counsels. Let now the astrologers, the star-gazers, the knowers from the new moons, stand up and save you from the things that will come upon you.

⁹ And you went to the king with oil and increased your perfumes and sent your ambassadors far off and debased yourself even to Sheol. ¹⁰ You were wearied with the length of your way, yet you did not say, It is in vain. You found a quickening of your strength, therefore you were not faint.

¹³ For my people have committed two evils: They have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

³ O Jehovah, do not your eyes look upon truth? You have stricken them, but they were not grieved. You have consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction. They have made their faces harder than a rock. They have refused to return.

⁵ And they will deceive each one his neighbor and will not speak the truth. They have taught their tongue to speak lies. They inwardly set up an ambush.

¹⁴ Every man has become stupid, without knowledge. Every goldsmith is put to shame by his graven image. For his molten image is falsehood and there is no breath in them. ¹⁵ They are vanity, a work of delusion. In the time of their visitation they will perish.

¹⁶ As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of Jehovah, we will not listen to you.
¹⁷ But we will certainly perform every word that has gone forth out of our mouth, to burn incense to the queen of heaven and to pour out drink offerings to her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our rulers, in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. For then we had plenty of food and were well and saw no evil.

⁵⁸ Jehovah of hosts says thus: The broad walls of Babylon will be utterly overthrown and her high gates will be burned with fire. And the peoples will labor for vanity and the nations for the fire and they will be weary.

⁶ Therefore thus says the lord Jehovah: Woe to the bloody city, to the caldron whose rust is in it and whose rust has not gone out of it! Take out of it piece after piece. No lot has fallen upon it.

¹³ In your filthiness is lewdness. Because I have cleansed you and you were not cleansed, you will not be cleansed from your filthiness any more, till I have caused my wrath toward you to rest.

¹³ As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil has come upon us. Yet we have not entreated the favor of Jehovah our God, that we should turn from our iniquities and have discernment in your truth.
¹⁴ Therefore Jehovah has watched over the evil and brought it upon us, for Jehovah our God is righteous in all his works which he does and we have not obeyed his voice.

¹ Ephraim feeds on wind and follows after the east wind. He continually multiplies lies and desolation. And they make a covenant with Assyria and oil is carried into Egypt.

¹³ Behold, is it not of Jehovah of hosts that the peoples labor for the fire and the nations weary themselves for vanity?

¹⁸ What profits the graven image, that the maker of it has engraved it, the molten image, even the teacher of lies, that he who fashions its form trusts in it, to make dumb idols?
¹⁹ Woe to him who says to the wood, Awake! To the dumb stone, Arise! Shall this teach? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.
