¹³ In your filthiness is lewdness. Because I have cleansed you and you were not cleansed, you will not be cleansed from your filthiness any more, till I have caused my wrath toward you to rest.

¹⁴ Moreover all the chiefs of the priests and the people, trespassed very greatly after all the abominations of the nations. And they polluted the house of Jehovah which he had made holy in Jerusalem.
¹⁵ And Jehovah, the God of their fathers, sent to them by his messengers, rising up early and sending, because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling-place. ¹⁶ But they mocked the messengers of God and despised his words and scoffed at his prophets, until the wrath of Jehovah arose against his people, till there was no remedy.

⁴ What could have been done more to my vineyard that I have not done in it? Why, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, it brought out wild grapes?
⁵ And now I will tell you* what I will do to my vineyard. I will take away the hedge of it and it will be eaten up. I will break down the wall of it and it will be trodden down. ⁶ And I will lay it waste. It will not be pruned nor hoed, but there will come up briers and thorns. I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.

¹³ Yet the people have not turned to him who killed* them, nor have they sought Jehovah of hosts. ¹⁴ Therefore Jehovah will cut off from Israel head and tail, palm-branch and rush, in one day. ¹⁵ The elder and the honorable man, he is the head. And the prophet who teaches lies, he is the tail. ¹⁶ For those who lead this people make them go-astray and those who are led by them are destroyed.
¹⁷ Therefore the Lord will not rejoice over their young men, nor will he have compassion on their fatherless and widows. For everyone is profane and an evildoer and every mouth does senselessness.
For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

²⁸ They are all grievous revolters, going about with slanders. They are brass and iron. They, all of them, deal corruptly.
²⁹ The bellows blow fiercely, the lead is consumed of the fire. In vain do they go on refining, for the wicked are not plucked away. ³⁰ Waste silver, men will call them, because Jehovah has rejected them.

³ From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon, king of Judah, even to this day, these twenty-three years, the word of Jehovah has come to me and I have spoken to you*, rising up early and speaking. But you* have not listened.
⁴ And Jehovah has sent to you* all his servants the prophets, rising up early and sending them, (but you* have not listened, nor inclined your* ear to hear), ⁵ saying, Return now each one from his evil way and from the evil of your* practices and dwell in the land that Jehovah has given to you* and to your* fathers, from everlasting even to everlasting. ⁶ And do not go after other gods to serve them and to worship them and provoke me not to anger with the work of your* hands. And I will do you* no hurt.
⁷ Yet you* have not listened to me, says Jehovah, that you* may provoke me to anger with the work of your* hands to your* own hurt.

¹⁸ I have surely heard Ephraim sympathize within himself saying, You have disciplined me and I was disciplined as a calf unaccustomed to the yoke. Turn me back and I will be turned back, for you are Jehovah my God.

¹³ Thus my anger will be accomplished and I will cause my wrath toward them to rest and I will be comforted. And they will know that I, Jehovah, have spoken in my zeal, when I have accomplished my wrath upon them.

¹⁸ Therefore I will also deal in wrath. My eye will not spare, nor will I have pity. And though they cry in my ears with a loud voice, yet I will not hear them.

⁴² So I will cause my wrath toward you to rest and my jealousy will depart from you and I will be quiet and will no more be angry.

²⁴ Son of man, say to her, You are a land that is not cleansed, nor rained upon in the day of indignation.

³⁶ Jehovah said moreover to me, Son of man, will you judge Oholah and Oholibah? Then declare to them their abominations. ³⁷ For they have committed adultery and blood is in their hands. And with their idols they have committed adultery. And they have also caused their sons, whom they bore to me, to pass through the fire for them to be devoured.
³⁸ Moreover they have done this to me: They have defiled my sanctuary in the same day and have profaned my Sabbaths. ³⁹ For when they had slain their sons to their idols, then they came the same day into my sanctuary to profane it, and behold, thus they have done in the midst of my house.
⁴⁰ And furthermore you* have sent for men who come from far, to whom a messenger was sent. And behold, they came, for whom you washed yourself, painted your eyes and decked yourself with ornaments, ⁴¹ and sat upon a stately bed, with a table prepared before it, you did set my incense and my oil upon it.
⁴² And the voice of a multitude being at ease was with her. And with men of the common sort, were brought drunkards from the wilderness and they put bracelets upon the hands of those two women and beautiful crowns upon their heads.
⁴³ Then I said of her who was old in adulteries, Now they will play the prostitute with her and she with them. ⁴⁴ And they went in to her, as they go in to a prostitute. So they went in to Oholah and to Oholibah, the lewd women.
⁴⁵ And righteous men, they will judge them with the judgment of adulteresses and with the judgment of women who shed blood, because they are adulteresses and blood is on their hands.
⁴⁶ For thus says the lord Jehovah: I will bring up a company against them and will give them to be tossed to and fro and robbed. ⁴⁷ And the company will stone them with stones and dispatch them with their swords. They will kill their sons and their daughters and burn up their houses with fire.
⁴⁸ Thus I will cause lewdness to cease out of the land, that all women may be instructed not to do according to your* lewdness.

¹¹ Then set it empty upon the coals of it, that it may be hot and the brass of it may burn and that the filthiness of it may be molten in it, that the scum of it may be consumed.

¹ When I would heal Israel, then the iniquity of Ephraim is uncovered and the wickedness of Samaria. For they commit falsehood and the thief enters in and the troop of robbers ravages outside.

⁹ Strangers have devoured his strength and he does not know. Yes, gray hairs are here and there upon him and he does not know. ¹⁰ And the pride of Israel testifies to his face. Yet they have not returned to Jehovah their God, nor sought him for all this.
¹¹ And Ephraim is like a silly dove, without understanding. They call to Egypt. They go to Assyria. ¹² When they will go, I will spread my net upon them. I will bring them down as the birds of the heavens. I will discipline them, as their congregation has heard.
¹³ Woe to them! For they have wandered from me. Destruction to them! For they have trespassed against me. Though I would redeem them, yet they have spoken lies against me. ¹⁴ And they have not cried to me with their heart, but they howl upon their beds. They assemble themselves for grain and new wine. They rebel against me.
¹⁵ Though I have instructed and strengthened their arms, yet they devise mischief against me. ¹⁶ They return, but not to him on high. They are like a deceitful bow. Their rulers will fall by the sword for the rage of their tongue. This will be their scorning in the land of Egypt.

⁶ And I also have given you* cleanness of teeth in all your* cities and want of bread in all your* places.
Yet you* have not returned to me, says Jehovah.
⁷ And I also have withheld the rain from you*, when there were yet three months to the harvest. And I caused it to rain upon one city and caused it not to rain upon another city. One piece was rained upon and the piece upon which it did not rain withered. ⁸ So two or three cities wandered to one city to drink water and were not satisfied.
Yet you* have not returned to me, says Jehovah.
⁹ I have struck you* with blasting and mildew. The multitude of your* gardens and your* vineyards and your* fig trees and your* olive trees the palmer-worm has devoured.
Yet you* have not returned to me, says Jehovah.
¹⁰ I have sent among you* the pestilence according to the manner of Egypt. I have slain your* young men with the sword and have carried away your* horses and I have made the stench of your* camp to come up even into your* nostrils.
Yet you* have not returned to me, says Jehovah.
¹¹ I have overthrown cities among you*, as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and you* were as a brand plucked out of the burning.
Yet you* have not returned to me, says Jehovah.
¹² Therefore thus I will do to you, O Israel and because I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, O Israel.

² She obeyed not the voice. She received not correction. She trusted not in Jehovah. She did not draw near to her God.

⁷ I said, Only fear me. Receive correction, so her dwelling will not be cut off, according to all that I have appointed concerning her. But they rose early and corrupted all their practices.

³⁷ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who have been sent to her! How-often I willed to have gathered together your children in the manner a bird gathers together her brood under her wings, and you did not will it! ³⁸ Behold, your house is left to you desolate;

⁷ Now he said to the vine-dresser, Behold three years, I come seeking fruit and find none in this fig tree. Cut it down. Why does it also do-away-with the good soil?
⁸ But he answered and says to him, Lord, Also leave it this year, until I should dig around it and put in manure; ⁹ and if it indeed produces fruit, good; otherwise you will be cutting it down in the future.

⁸ But to those seeking things out of selfish ambition and who are indeed disobedient to the truth, but obey unrighteousness, he will repay with fury and wrath, ⁹ affliction and distress upon every soul of man who is working evil, both of the Jew first and of the Greek.

¹ Therefore beloved, having these promises, we should cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, completing holiness in the fear of God.

¹¹ He who is doing wrong, let him still do wrong and the filthy, let him still be filthy and the righteous, let him still practice righteousness and the holy one, let him still be holy.
