¹ And after these things, in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia, Ezra the son of Seraiah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah,

⁴ Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, so that he may count the silver which is brought into the house of Jehovah, which the doorkeepers have gathered from the people.

⁸ And Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the Book of the Law in the house of Jehovah. And Hilkiah gave the Book to Shaphan, and he read it.

¹⁸ And the chief of the executioners took Seraiah the chief priest, and Zephaniah the second priest, and the three doorkeepers.

⁴ Eleazar fathered Phinehas. Phinehas fathered Abishua. ⁵ And Abishua fathered Bukki. And Bukki fathered Uzzi. ⁶ And Uzzi fathered Zerahiah. And Zerahiah fathered Meraioth. ⁷ Meraioth fathered Amariah. And Amariah fathered Ahitub. ⁸ And Ahitub fathered Zadok. And Zadok fathered Ahimaaz. ⁹ And Ahimaaz fathered Azariah. And Azariah fathered Johanan. ¹⁰ And Johanan fathered Azariah, he who acted in the priest's office in the temple that Solomon built in Jerusalem. ¹¹ And Azariah fathered Amariah. And Amariah fathered Ahitub. ¹² And Ahitub fathered Zadok. And Zadok fathered Shallum. ¹³ And Shallum fathered Hilkiah. And Hilkiah fathered Azariah. ¹⁴ And Azariah fathered Seraiah. ¹¹ and Azariah the son of Hilkiah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Zadok, the son of Meraioth, the son of Ahitub, the ruler of the house of God,

⁹ And they came to Hilkiah the high priest, and they delivered the silver that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered from the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim, and from all the remnant of Israel, and from all Judah and Benjamin, and they returned to Jerusalem.

¹⁵ And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the Book of the Law in the house of Jehovah. And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan.

¹⁴ And the elders of the Jews built, and they were blessed through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. And they built and finished it according to the command of the God of Israel, and according to the command of Cyrus, and Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia.

¹⁰ For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the Law of Jehovah, and to do it, and to teach statutes and judgments in Israel.

¹² Artaxerxes, king of kings, to Ezra the priest, a scribe of the Law of the God of Heaven, perfect peace, and now:

²¹ And I, Artaxerxes the king, make a decree to all the treasurers who are Beyond the River, that whatever Ezra the priest, the scribe of the Law of the God of Heaven, shall ask of you, it shall be done exactly,

¹ These are now the chief of their fathers, and the genealogy of those who went up with me from Babylon, in the reign of Artaxerxes the king. ² From the sons of Phinehas; Gershom. From the sons of Ithamar, Daniel. From the sons of David, Hattush. ³ From the sons of Shechaniah, from the sons of Parosh, Zechariah. And with him were counted by genealogy of the males a hundred and fifty. ⁴ From the sons of Pahath-moab, Eli-hoenai the son of Zerahiah, and with him two hundred males. ⁵ From the sons of Shechaniah, the son of Jahaziel, and with him three hundred males. ⁶ From the sons also of Adin, Ebed the son of Jonathan, and with him fifty males. ⁷ And from the sons of Elam, Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah, and with him seventy males. ⁸ And from the sons of Shephatiah, Zebadiah the son of Michael, and with him eighty males. ⁹ From the sons of Joab; Obadiah the son of Jehiel, and with him two hundred and eighteen males. ¹⁰ And from the sons of Shelomith, the son of Josiphiah, and with him a hundred and sixty males.

¹ And it happened in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, wine was before him. And I took up the wine and gave it to the king. Now I had not been sad in his presence before.

² And Ezra the priest brought the Law before the congregation, both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month. ³ And he read in it before the street in front of the Water Gate from the morning until noon, in front of the men and the women, and those who could understand. And the ears of all the people listened to the Book of the Law. ⁴ And Ezra the scribe stood upon a pulpit of wood which they had made for the purpose. And beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchiah, and Hashum, and Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam. ⁵ And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was above all the people. And when he opened it, all the people stood up. ⁶ And Ezra blessed Jehovah, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, amen, lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped Jehovah with their faces to the ground. ⁷ And Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the Law. And the people were in their place. ⁸ And they read in the Book of the Law of God, clearly. And they gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading. ⁹ And Nehemiah, the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people, said to all the people, This day is holy to Jehovah your God. Do not mourn or weep. For all the people wept when they heard the words of the Law.

¹¹ Seraiah, the son of Hilkiah, the son of Meshullam, the son of Zadok, the son of Meraioth, the son of Ahitub, the ruler of the house of God.

²⁴ And the chief of the executioners took Seraiah the chief priest, and Zephaniah the second priest, and the three doorkeepers. ²⁵ He also took out of the city a eunuch who was in charge of the men of war; and seven men from those who were near the king's person, who were found in the city; and the chief scribe of the army, who mustered the people of the land; and sixty men of the people of the land, who were found in the middle of the city. ²⁶ And Nebuzaradan the chief of the executioners took them and brought them to the king of Babylon to Riblah. ²⁷ And the king of Babylon struck them and slaughtered them in Riblah in the land of Hamath. So Judah was exiled out of his own land.
