And to which of the holy ones will you turn? ² For vexation will slay the fool, and jealousy will kill the simple. ³ I have seen a fool taking root, but* suddenly I cursed his dwelling. ⁴ His children are far from deliverance, and they are crushed in the gate, and there is no deliverer— ⁵ whose harvest the hungry eats, and he takes it _⌊from behind_⌋* the thorns; and the thirsty pants after their wealth. ⁶ Indeed,* mischief does not come from the dust, and trouble does not sprout from the earth. ⁷ But a human being is born to trouble, and _⌊they soar aloft_⌋* like _⌊sparks_⌋.* ⁸ "But I myself* will seek God, and to God I would commit my cause. ⁹ He is doing great and _⌊unsearchable_⌋* things, marvelous things _⌊without number_⌋*— ¹⁰ the one who is giving rain on the _⌊surface of_⌋* the earth and is sending water on the _⌊surface of_⌋* the fields, ¹¹ to set the lowly on high, and those mourning are lifted to safety. ¹² He is frustrating the devices of the crafty, and their hands do not achieve success. ¹³ He is capturing the wise in their craftiness, and the schemes of the wily are rushed. ¹⁴ In the daytime they meet with darkness, and they grope at noon* as in the night. ¹⁵ And* he saves from the sword of* their mouth, _⌊even_⌋* the poor from the hand of the strong. ¹⁶ So* there is hope* for the powerless, and wickedness shuts its mouth. ¹⁷ "Look, happy is the human being whom God reproves; and you must not despise the discipline of Shaddai, ¹⁸ for he himself* wounds, but* he binds up; he strikes, but* his hands heal. ¹⁹ _⌊From_⌋* six troubles he will deliver you, and in seven evil shall not touch you. ²⁰ In famine he will redeem you from death, and in war from the _⌊power of_⌋* the sword. ²¹ From the scourge of the tongue you shall be hidden, and you shall not be afraid of* destruction when it comes. ²² At destruction and famine* you shall laugh, and you shall not fear the wild animals of the earth. ²³ For your covenant will be with the stones of the field, and the wild animals* of the field will be at peace with you. ²⁴ And you shall know that your tent is safe, and you will inspect your fold, and you shall not be missing anything. ²⁵ And you shall know that your offspring are many, and your descendants like the vegetation of the earth. ²⁶ You shall come in maturity to the grave, as the raising up of a stack of sheaves in its season. ²⁷ "Look, we have searched this out—it is true; hear it and know it _⌊yourself_⌋."*

² Then* he said,
"Yahweh came from Sinai, and he dawned upon them from Seir; he shone forth from Mount Paran, and he came with myriads of holy ones, at his right hand a fiery law for them.* ³ Moreover,* _⌊he loves his people_⌋,* all the holy ones were in your hand, and they bowed down to* your feet, _⌊each one accepted directions from you_⌋.*

¹⁸ Look, he does not trust in his servants and he charges his angels with error.

⁸ Have you listened in God's confidential discussion? And do you limit wisdom to yourself? ⁹ What do you know that we do not know? What do you understand that is not clear to us? ¹⁰ Both the gray-haired and the old are among us— _⌊those older than your father_⌋.*

¹⁵ Look, he does not trust his holy ones, and the heavens are not clean in his eyes.

³ With regard to the saints who are in the land, they are the noble ones in whom is all my desire.

¹⁶ And they were jealous of Moses in the camp, and of Aaron, the holy one of Yahweh.

¹ Listen to me in silence, coastlands, and let nations renew their strength. Let them approach, then let them speak; let us draw near together for judgment.

²¹ "Present your legal case," says Yahweh. "Bring your evidence," says the king of Jacob. ²² Let them bring them, and let them tell us what will happen. Tell us what the former things are _⌊so that_⌋* we may take them to our heart and know their outcome.* Declare to us the things to come; ²³ tell us the things coming _⌊hereafter_⌋,* that* we may know that you are gods. Indeed, do good or* do evil, that* we may be afraid and see* together.

¹ Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, to the saints who are in Ephesus* and faithful in Christ Jesus:

¹ Therefore, since* we also have such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us, putting aside every weight and _⌊the sin that so easily ensnares us_⌋*, let us run with patient endurance the race that has been set before us,

¹ When Rachel saw that she could not bear children to Jacob, Rachel envied her sister. And she said to Jacob, "Give me children—if not, I will die!"

The fool says in his heart, "There is no God." They are corrupt. They do abominable deeds. There is none who does good.

⁴ I say to the boastful, 'Do not boast!' and to the wicked, 'Do not lift up your horn!

⁶ The brutish man does not know, and the fool cannot understand this.

¹⁷ Fools, because of their rebellious way and their iniquities, were afflicted.

²² "_⌊How long_⌋,* O simple ones, will you love simplicity? And how long will scoffers delight in their scoffing, and fools hate knowledge? ²³ May you turn to my argument!* Behold, I shall pour out my spirit upon you; I will make my words known to you.

⁵ Learn prudence, O simple ones; fools, learn _⌊intelligence_⌋.*

¹⁶ As for a fool, _⌊on that very day_⌋* he makes his anger known, but he who ignores an insult is prudent.

⁹ Do not be quick in your spirit to anger, for anger lodges in the bosom of fools.

¹¹ Ephraim was like a dove, silly, _⌊without sense_⌋;* they call to Egypt, they go to Assyria.

⁹ So God said to Jonah, "_⌊Is it right for you to be angry_⌋* about the plant?" And he said, "_⌊It is right for me to be angry enough to die_⌋!"*

⁸ but to those who act from selfish ambition and who disobey the truth, but who obey unrighteousness, wrath and anger.

⁶ For from these are those who slip into houses and captivate foolish women loaded down with sins, led by various kinds of desires,

¹⁵ 'Cursed be the man that makes a divine image or a cast image, which is a detestable thing for Yahweh, the work of the hand of a skilled craftsman, and then sets it in a hiding place.'* And _⌊all the people shall respond_⌋,* 'Amen.' ¹⁶ 'Cursed be the one who dishonors his father or his mother.' And all of the people shall say, 'Amen.' ¹⁷ 'Cursed be the one who moves the boundary marker of his neighbor.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ¹⁸ 'Cursed be the one who misleads a blind person on the road.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ¹⁹ 'Cursed be the one who deprives the alien, the orphan, and the widow of justice.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²⁰ 'Cursed be the one who lies with the wife of his father, because _⌊he has dishonored his father's bed_⌋.'* And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²¹ 'Cursed be the one who lies with any kind of animal.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²² 'Cursed be the one who lies with his sister, the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²³ 'Cursed be the one who lies with his mother-in-law.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²⁴ 'Cursed be the one who strikes down his neighbor in secret.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²⁵ 'Cursed be the one who takes a bribe _⌊to murder an innocent person_⌋.'* And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' ²⁶ 'Cursed be the one _⌊who does not keep_⌋* the words of this law, to observe them.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'"

¹⁸ "He himself* is swift on the water's surface; their portion is cursed in the land. _⌊No one turns toward the path of their vineyards_⌋.*

⁸ for what is the hope of the godless when he cuts them off, when God takes away his life?

³⁵ I have seen the wicked acting violently and spreading himself out like a luxuriant native tree. ³⁶ Then he passed on* and behold, he was not. And I sought him, but he could not be found.

²⁵ Let their camp be desolate. Let none dwell in their tents,

³ because I envied the boastful when I saw the well-being* of the wicked. ⁴ For there are no pains up to their death, and their bodies are _⌊healthy_⌋.* ⁵ They do not have _⌊ordinary trouble_⌋,* and they are not plagued as other people.* ⁶ Therefore pride is their necklace; an outfit of violence covers them. ⁷ Their eye bulges from fat.* Imaginings overflow their heart. ⁸ They mock and speak maliciously of oppression; they speak as though from on high. ⁹ They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue roams the earth.

¹⁸ Surely you set them on slippery places. You cause them to fall onto ruin.* ¹⁹ How they become a desolation in a moment! They come to a complete end by terrors. ²⁰ Like a dream upon awakening, when you wake up, O Lord, you will despise their fleeting form.*

⁷ When the wicked flourish like grass and all the workers of evil blossom, it is so they can be destroyed forever.

¹ You will be in the right, O Yahweh, when I complain to you. Even so, let me speak my claims with you. Why does the way of the wicked succeed? All those who deal treacherously with treachery are at ease. ² Not only do you plant them, they take root. They grow, but also they produce fruit. You are near in their mouths, but far from their _⌊inmost beings_⌋.* ³ But you, O Yahweh, you know me, you see me, and you test that my heart is with you. Tear them apart like sheep for the slaughtering, and set them apart for the day of slaughter.

²⁰ "For it is written in the book of Psalms,
'Let his residence become deserted, and let there be no one to live in it,'*
and,
'Let another person take his position.'*

⁵ You will not bow down to them, and you will not serve them, because I am Yahweh your God, a jealous God, punishing the guilt of the parents on the children on the third and on the fourth generations* of those hating me,

¹⁹ And behold,* a great wind came from across the desert, and it struck the four corners of the house _⌊so that_⌋* it fell upon the young people, and they died. But I escaped, even I alone, to tell you."

¹⁰ The roar of the lion and the voice of a lion in its prime, and the teeth of the young lions are broken. ¹¹ The lion is perishing without* prey, and the lion's whelps are scattered.

⁴ If your children sinned against him, then* he sent them into the _⌊power_⌋* of their transgression.

⁷ because of your knowledge that I am not guilty, and there is no escaping from your hand?

¹⁶ His roots dry up _⌊below_⌋,* and its branches* wither away above.* ¹⁷ His remembrance perishes from the earth, and there is not a name for him on the street. ¹⁸ "They thrust him from light into darkness, and they drive him out from the world. ¹⁹ There is no offspring for him nor* a descendant among his people, and there is not a survivor in his abode.

¹⁴ If their children multiply, it is for the sword, and his offspring _⌊do not have enough to eat_⌋.*

² Or else he will tear me apart like a lion, ripping to pieces, with none to deliver.

⁹ Let his children be orphans, and his wife a widow, ¹⁰ and let his children wander aimlessly and beg, and let them plead from their ruins. ¹¹ Let the creditor seize all that is his, and let strangers plunder his property. ¹² Let there be none who extend to him loyal love, nor any who pities his orphans. ¹³ Let his descendants* be cut off. Let their name be blotted out in the next generation. ¹⁴ Let the iniquity of his ancestors* be remembered before Yahweh, and let the sin of his mother not be blotted out. ¹⁵ Let them be before Yahweh continually, that he may cut off their* memory from the earth,

¹⁵⁵ Salvation is far from the wicked, for they do not seek your statutes.

⁵ Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them.* They shall not be put to shame when they speak with enemies at the gate.

¹² For I know your transgressions are many and your sins are numerous, you foes of the righteous, those who take a bribe, and _⌊those who_⌋* push aside the poor ones in the gate!

⁴ Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them—do you think that they were sinners worse than all the people who live in Jerusalem? ⁵ No, I tell you, but unless you repent, you will all perish as well!"

³³ A people that you do not know shall consume the harvest of your land and all your labor, and you will be only oppressed and crushed _⌊for the rest of your lives_⌋.*

⁵¹ And it* shall consume the fruit of your livestock and the fruit of your ground _⌊until you are destroyed_⌋,* and who will not leave for you any grain, wine, and olive oil, _⌊calves of your herds_⌋,* and _⌊lambs of_⌋* your flock _⌊until it has destroyed you_⌋.*

³ And whenever Israel sowed seed, the Midianites,* Amalekites,* and the people of the east would come up against them. ⁴ They would camp against them and destroy the produce of the land _⌊as far as_⌋* Gaza; they left no produce in Israel, or sheep, ox, or donkey. ⁵ For they, their livestock, and their tents would come up like a great number of locusts; they and their camels could not be counted; they came into the land and devoured it. ⁶ Israel was very poor because of the presence of the Midianites,* and the _⌊Israelites_⌋* cried out to Yahweh.

¹¹ The angel of Yahweh came and sat under the oak* that was at Ophrah that belonged to Jehoash the Abiezrite; and Gideon his son was threshing wheat in the winepress to hide it* from the Midianites.*

¹¹ So Yahweh brought the commanders of the army of the king of Assyria upon them, and they took Manasseh captive with hooks, and they bound him with bronze fetters and brought him to Babylon.

¹⁵ Then* the Sabeans _⌊attacked_⌋,* and they took them, and they slew the servants _⌊by the edge of the sword_⌋.* But* I escaped, even I alone, to tell you."

¹⁷ While this one was still speaking, _⌊another_⌋* came and said, "The Chaldeans formed three divisions, and they made a raid on the camels, and they carried them away, and they struck your servants _⌊by the edge of the sword_⌋,* but I escaped, even I alone, to tell you."

³ So* Yahweh _⌊asked_⌋* Satan,* "Have you _⌊considered_⌋* my servant Job? Indeed,* there is no one like him on the earth—a blameless man and upright and God-fearing and turning away from evil. And still he persists in his blamelessness _⌊even though_⌋* you incited me against him to destroy him for nothing."

⁶ The tents of the destroyers are at peace, and there is security for those who provoke God, for those whom God brings into his hand.*

⁸ for he is thrust into a net by his feet, and he walks into a pitfall. ⁹ A trap seizes him by the heel; a snare takes hold of him. ¹⁰ His rope is hidden in the ground, and his trap on the path.

¹⁵ He swallows riches, but* he vomits them* up; God drives them* out from his stomach.

⁸ Yahweh has sworn by his right hand, and by _⌊his mighty arm_⌋,* "Surely I will never again give your grain as food to _⌊your enemies_⌋,* and surely _⌊foreigners_⌋* shall not drink your new wine at which you have labored."

³⁴ Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon has devoured me and sucked me dry; he has made me an empty vessel; he has swallowed me like the sea monster; he has filled his belly with my delicacies; he has rinsed me.

⁴⁴ And I will punish Bel in Babylon, and I will wrench out from his mouth _⌊what he has swallowed_⌋.* And the nations will not stream towards him any longer _⌊what's worse_⌋,* the wall of Babylon has fallen.

⁵ The Lord has become like an enemy; he has destroyed Israel; he has destroyed all its citadel fortresses;* he has ruined all its fortifications and multiplied lamentation and mourning in the daughter of Judah.

¹⁶ They have opened their mouths against you, all your enemies. They hiss and gnash a tooth, and they say, "We have destroyed her! Surely this is the day we have hoped for; we have found it, we have seen it!"

⁷ Because they sow the wind, they will reap the whirlwind. The standing grain does not have heads;* it will not yield flour. And if it would yield, strangers would devour it.

²⁷ If I had not feared a provocation of the enemy, lest their foes might misunderstand, * lest they should say, * "Our hand is _⌊triumphant_⌋,* and Yahweh did not do all this." '

⁹ You must watch; if it goes up by the way of its territory to Beth Shemesh, he has caused this great disaster to come on us. But if not, then we will know his hand has not struck us; it was by chance that this happened to us.

²⁹ but he remains quiet, and who can condemn? And he hides his face, and who can behold him? Yet* he is over a nation and over a person alike,

⁷ For we are brought to an end by your anger, and we hasten off* by your wrath.

⁷ I form light and I create darkness; I make peace and I create evil; I am Yahweh; I do all these things.

³⁸ Is it not from the mouth of the Most High that disaster and good will come?

⁴ They utter words of vain oaths when _⌊making covenants_⌋,* and judgment blossoms like a poisonous plant on the furrows of the field.

⁶ Or is a horn blown in a city and people are not afraid? Or does a disaster occur in the city and Yahweh has not done it?

¹⁵ Take care that no one falls short of the grace of God; that no one growing up like a root of bitterness causes trouble, and by it many become defiled;

¹⁷ And to Adam* he said, "Because you listened to the voice of your wife and you ate from the tree _⌊from which I forbade you to eat_⌋,*
the ground shall be cursed on your account. In pain you shall eat from it all the days of your life. ¹⁸ And thorns and thistles shall sprout for you, and you shall eat the plants of the field. ¹⁹ By the sweat of your brow* you shall eat bread, until your return to the ground. For from it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

¹ "A human being born of a woman is short of days and full of troubles.*

⁸ You have put our iniquities before you, our hidden sins into the light of your countenance. ⁹ For all of our days dwindle away in your rage; we complete our years like a sigh.

⁸ All things toil continuously;* no one can ever finish describing this.* The eye is never* satisfied with seeing, and the ear is never* filled with hearing.

²² For what does a person receive for all his toil and in the longing of his heart with which he toils under the sun?

¹⁵ Just as he came from his mother's womb naked, _⌊he will depart_⌋* just as he came; he will take nothing with him for his toil. ¹⁶ This also is a grievous illness. Exactly as he came, so he will go. What profit does he gain for all his toil for the wind? ¹⁷ Also, he eats in darkness all his days; he is frustrated in much sickness and resentment.

¹³ Temptation has not come upon you except what is common to humanity. But God is faithful, who will not permit you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but will also make a way out together with the temptation, so that you may be able to endure it.

⁷ Then Jacob was very frightened and distressed. So he divided the people, flocks, cattle, and camels that were with him into two companies. ⁸ And he thought, "If Esau comes to one company and destroys it, the remaining company will be able to escape." ⁹ Then Jacob said, "O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, O Yahweh, who said to me, 'Return to your land and to your family, and I will deal well with you.' ¹⁰ _⌊I am not worthy_⌋* of all the loyal love and all the faithfulness that you have shown* your servant, for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two camps. ¹¹ Please rescue me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear him, lest he come and attack mother and children alike. ¹² Now you yourself said, 'I will surely deal well with you and make your offspring as the sand of the sea that cannot be counted for abundance.'"

¹² And when he was in distress he entreated Yahweh his God and greatly humbled himself before the God of his ancestors* ¹³ and prayed to him. And God responded to him and heard his plea and let him return to Jerusalem to his kingdom. And Manasseh knew that Yahweh was God.

⁵ If you yourself* would seek God, then* you would plead to Shaddai for grace.

²¹ "Please reconcile yourself with him, and be at peace; _⌊in this way_⌋,* good will come to you.

²⁷ You will pray to him, and he will hear you, and you will pay your vows.

⁵ _⌊Commit to_⌋* Yahweh your way; Trust also on him and he will act.

¹⁵ And call me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will glorify me."

I cry out with my voice to God; with my voice to God, that he may hear me. ² In the day I have trouble, I seek* the Lord. At night my hand stretches out _⌊continually_⌋;* my soul refuses to be comforted.

¹ And Jonah prayed to Yahweh his God from the belly of the fish ² and said,
"I called _⌊from my distress_⌋* to Yahweh, and he answered me; from the belly of Sheol* I cried for help— you heard my voice. ³ And you threw me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the sea currents surrounded me; all your breakers and your surging waves passed over me. ⁴ And I said, 'I am banished* from your sight; how* _⌊will I continue to look_⌋* _⌊on your holy temple_⌋?'* ⁵ The waters encompassed me up to my neck; the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. ⁶ I went down to the foundations of the mountains; the Underworld—its bars were around me forever. ¹² for which reason also I suffer these things. But I am not ashamed, because I know in whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted until that day.

²³ who when he* was reviled, did not revile in return; when* suffering, he did not threaten, but entrusted himself to the one who judges justly,

¹⁹ So then also those who suffer according to the will of God must entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing good.

¹⁰ He is the one who does great things _⌊beyond understanding_⌋* and marvelous things _⌊beyond number_⌋.*

⁷ "Can you find out the essence of God, or can you find out _⌊the ultimate limits_⌋* of Shaddai? ⁸ _⌊It is higher than the heaven_⌋;* what can you do? It is deeper than Sheol; what can you know? ⁹ Its measure is longer than the earth and broader than the sea.

⁵ "The spirits of the dead tremble below the waters and their inhabitants. ⁶ Sheol is naked before him, and there is no covering for Abaddon. ⁷ He stretches out the north over emptiness; he hangs the earth _⌊over nothing_⌋.* ⁸ He ties up the water in its clouds, and the cloud is not torn open beneath it.* ⁹ He covers the face of the full moon;* he spreads his cloud over it. ¹⁰ _⌊He has described a circle_⌋* on the face of the water _⌊between light and darkness_⌋.* ¹¹ "The pillars of heaven tremble, and they are astounded at his rebuke. ¹² By his power he stilled the sea, and by his understanding he struck down Rahab. ¹³ By his breath _⌊the heavens were made clear_⌋;* his hand pierced the fleeing snake. ¹⁴ Look, these are the outer fringes of his ways, and _⌊how faint is the word_⌋* that we hear of him! But* who can understand the thunder of his power?"

⁵ "God thunders with his voice in marvelous ways; he does great things, and we cannot comprehend.

³ 'Who is this darkening counsel without knowledge?' Therefore I uttered, but* I did not understand; _⌊things too wonderful for me_⌋,* but I did not know.

⁵ Many things, O Yahweh my God, you have done— your wonderful deeds and your thoughts toward us. There is none to compare with you. If I tried to proclaim and tell of them, they would be too numerous to count.

¹⁸ Blessed be Yahweh God, the God of Israel, who alone does wonderful things.

¹⁰ For you are great and doing wondrous things; you alone are God.

¹⁸ If I should count them, they would outnumber the sand. I awaken, and I am still with you.

²⁸ Have you not known, or have you not heard? Yahweh is the God of eternity, the creator of the ends of the earth! He is not faint, and he does not grow weary! There is no searching his understanding.

³³ Oh, the depth of the riches and the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how incomprehensible are his ways!

²⁶ _⌊when he made_⌋* a rule for the rain and a way for the thunder's lightning bolt,

²⁸ which the clouds pour down; they shower abundantly on human beings.

²⁶ to bring rain on a land _⌊where no one lives_⌋,* a desert _⌊where no humans live_⌋,* ²⁷ to satisfy desert and wasteland, and to cause the ground to put forth the rising of grass? ²⁸ Is there a father for the rain, or who fathered the drops of dew?

⁹ You care for* the land* and water it; you greatly enrich it. The stream of God is filled with waters. You provide their grain, for so you have established it. ¹⁰ You drench its furrows, penetrating its ridges. With rains you soften it; its growth you bless. ¹¹ You crown the year with your _⌊bounty_⌋,* and your wagon paths drip with _⌊richness_⌋.*

⁸ who covers the heavens with clouds, who provides rain for the earth, who causes grass to grow on the mountains.

²⁴ And they do not say in their hearts, 'Let us fear please Yahweh our God, the one who gives the autumn rain* and the spring rain* in its season, _⌊the set times of the harvest_⌋* he keeps for us.'

¹³ _⌊When he utters his voice_⌋* there is a noise of water in the heavens, and he causes the mist to rise from the ends* of the earth. He makes lightning for the rain, and he causes the wind to go out from his storehouses.

²² Are there any among the idols of the nation who cause rain to pour? Or can the heavens give showers? Is it not you, O Yahweh our God? Therefore, we hope in you, for you do all these things.

⁷ "And I also withheld the rain from you when there were still three months to the harvest. And I would send rain on one city and send no rain on another city. One tract of land will be rained on, and the tract of land _⌊on which it does not rain_⌋* will dry up.

¹⁷ And yet he did not leave himself without witness by* doing good, giving you rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying you* with food and your hearts with gladness."

²⁷ The God of _⌊ancient time_⌋* is a hiding place, and underneath are the arms of eternity,* and he drove out _⌊from before_⌋* you your enemy, and he said, 'Destroy them!'

⁷ Yahweh makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and also exalts. ⁸ He raises up the poor from the dust. From the ash heap he lifts up the needy, to cause them to sit with noble people and to cause them to inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth belong to Yahweh and he has set the inhabited world on them.

¹⁴ Because he loves me, therefore I will deliver him; I will protect* him because he knows my name.

⁴¹ But he protects* the needy from misery, and he makes their families like a flock.

⁷ He raises the helpless from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap,

²⁴ And all of the trees of the field will know that I, Yahweh, I will bring low a high tree, and I will exalt a low, fresh tree, and I will make a dry tree flourish. I, Yahweh, I have spoken, and I will do it.'"

⁵² He has brought down rulers from their thrones, and has exalted the lowly. ⁵³ He has filled those who are hungry with good things, and those who are rich he has sent away empty-handed.

²¹ Blessed are those who are hungry now, because you will be satisfied. Blessed are those who weep now, Because you will laugh.

⁹ Now let the brother of humble circumstances boast in his high position,

⁶ But he gives greater grace. Therefore it says,
"God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble."* ⁷ Therefore subject yourselves to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you. ⁸ Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded! ⁹ Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your* joy to gloominess. ¹⁰ Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

³ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

¹⁰ And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ,* after you* have suffered for a short time, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.

¹⁵ It happened when our enemies heard that their plan was known to us, that God had frustrated it, and we all returned to the wall—each to his work.

¹⁶ "Strength and sound wisdom are with him; the deceived and the deceiver are his.* ¹⁷ He leads counselors away stripped, and he makes fools of judges.

¹¹ Though they have _⌊plotted_⌋* evil against you, though they have planned a scheme, they will not prevail.

¹⁰ Yahweh brings to nothing* the plan of nations; he frustrates* the intents of peoples. ¹¹ The plan of Yahweh stands firm forever, the intents of his heart _⌊from one generation to the next_⌋.*

¹⁷ For the arms of the wicked shall be broken, but Yahweh supports the righteous.

³⁰ There is no wisdom, nor understanding, nor counsel to oppose Yahweh.

¹⁰ _⌊Make a plan_⌋,* but it will be frustrated! Speak a word, but it will not stand, for God is with us!

³ And the spirit of _⌊the Egyptians_⌋* will be disturbed in his midst, and I will _⌊confuse_⌋* his plans,* and they will consult the idols and the spirits of the dead, and the ghosts and the spiritists.

³⁶ And the angel of Yahweh set out and struck one hundred and eighty-five thousand in the camp of the Assyrians. When* they rose in the morning, look! All of them were dead corpses.

¹¹ And when* Peter came to himself, he said, "Now I know truly that the Lord has sent out his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and all _⌊that the Jewish people expected_⌋!"*

¹² And when it* was day, the Jews made a conspiracy and* bound themselves under a curse, saying they would* neither eat nor drink until they had killed Paul. ¹³ Now there were more than forty who had made this conspiracy, ¹⁴ who went to the chief priests and the elders and* said, "We have bound ourselves under a curse to partake of nothing until we have killed Paul. ¹⁵ Therefore, now you along with the Sanhedrin explain to the military tribune that he should bring him down to you, as if you were going to determine more accurately the things concerning him. And we are ready to do away with him before he comes near." ¹⁶ But when* the son of Paul's sister heard about the ambush, he came and entered into the barracks* and* reported it* to Paul. ¹⁷ So Paul called one of the centurions and* said, "Bring this young man to the military tribune, because he has something to report to him." ¹⁸ So he took him and* brought him* to the military tribune and said, "The prisoner Paul called me and* asked me* to bring this young man to you because he* has something to tell you." ¹⁹ And the military tribune, taking hold of his hand and withdrawing privately, asked, "What is it that you have to report to me?" ²⁰ And he said, "The Jews have agreed to ask you that you bring Paul down to the Sanhedrin tomorrow, as if they were going to inquire somewhat more accurately concerning him. ²¹ You therefore do not be persuaded by them, because more than forty men of _⌊their number_⌋* are lying in wait for him, who have bound themselves under a curse neither to eat nor to drink until they have done away with him. And now they are ready, waiting for _⌊you to agree_⌋."* ²² So the military tribune sent the young man away, directing him,* "Tell no one that you have revealed these things to me."

³¹ Now David was told, "Ahithophel was among the conspirators with Absalom." Then David said, "Please frustrate the counsel of Ahithophel, O Yahweh."

³⁴ but if you want to return to the city and say to Absalom, 'I am your servant, O king. I used to be a servant of your father, but from then and now I will be your servant,' then you can frustrate the counsel of Ahithophel for me.

²³ When Ahithophel saw that his advice was not followed, he saddled the donkey, and he set out and went up to his house in his city. _⌊After he set his house in order_⌋,* he hanged himself, and he died and was buried in the tomb of his ancestors.*

⁴ And the king asked, "Who is in the courtyard?" Haman had just come to the courtyard of the king's outer palace to tell the king to hang Mordecai on the gallows that he had prepared for him. ⁵ And the king's servants said to him, "Look! Haman is standing in the courtyard." And the king said, "Let him come." ⁶ And Haman came, and the king said to him, "What is to be done for the man whom the king wishes to honor?" And Haman thought to himself, "Whom would the king wish to honor more than me?" ⁷ So Haman said to the king, "For a man whom the king wishes to honor, ⁸ let them bring _⌊royal clothing_⌋* with which the king has clothed himself, and a horse that the king has ridden, and on whose head a royal head-dress has been given. ⁹ And let the clothing and the horse be given _⌊to the man_⌋* by the officials of the king's nobles; let them cloth the man whom the king wishes to honor, and let him ride on his horse through the public square of the city, and let them proclaim before him, 'Thus, it will be done for the man whom the king wishes to honor.'" ¹⁰ Then the king said to Haman, "Quickly, take the clothing and the horse, just as you have said, and do so to Mordecai the Jew who sits at the gate of the king; you must not leave out anything from what you have said." ¹¹ So Haman took the clothing and the horse, and he clothed Mordecai and let him ride through the public square of the city; and he proclaimed before him, "Thus, it is done to the man whom the king wishes to honor."

¹⁰ And they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai, and the anger of the king was abated.

²⁵ But when it came* _⌊to the attention of_⌋* the king, he _⌊gave orders in writing_⌋* that his evil plot that he had devised against the Jews should return on his head, and they hung him and his sons on the gallows.

¹⁵ He makes a pit and digs it out, then falls in the trap he has made. ¹⁶ His trouble comes back on his head, and his violence comes down on his skull.

¹⁵ The nations have fallen in the pit that they made; their foot is caught in the net that they hid. ¹⁶ Yahweh has made himself known; he has executed judgment. The wicked is snared by the work of his hands. Higgaion* Selah

²⁶ To the pure you show yourself pure. but to the wicked you show yourself shrewd.

⁷ For without cause they secretly hide the pit with their net for me; without cause they dug it for my life. ⁸ Let _⌊unforeseen ruin_⌋* come on him, and his net that he hid, let it catch him. Let him fall into it in ruin.

³² for he who is perverse is an abomination of Yahweh, but those who are upright are his confidence.

⁵¹ He has done a mighty deed with his arm; he has dispersed the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.

¹⁹ For it is written,
"I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the intelligence of the intelligent I will confound."* ²⁰ Where is the wise person? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God, for it is written, "The one who catches the wise in their craftiness,"*

²⁹ And you shall be groping at noon just as the blind person gropes in the dark, and you shall not succeed in finding your way, and you shall only be abused and robbed _⌊all the time_⌋,* and there will not be _⌊anyone who will rescue you_⌋. *

²⁵ They grope in the dark _⌊without_⌋* light, and he makes them stagger like a* drunkard.

¹⁹ The way of the wicked ones is like deep darkness; they do not know what they stumble over.

¹⁰ We grope like the blind along a wall, and we grope _⌊as without_⌋* eyes. We stumble at noon as in the twilight; among the strong we are like the dead.

⁹ And then in that day," _⌊declares_⌋* my Lord Yahweh, "I* will make the sun go down at noon and I will darken the land on a day of light.

¹⁰ The roar of the lion and the voice of a lion in its prime, and the teeth of the young lions are broken.

¹⁴ But you have seen; indeed you have noted trouble and grief to take it into your hand. The helpless abandons himself upon you; you have been the helper for the orphan.

¹⁷ The longing of the afflicted you have heard, O Yahweh. You will make their heart secure. You will _⌊listen attentively_⌋*

¹⁰ All of my bones shall say, "O Yahweh, who is like you, who delivers the poor from one stronger than he and the poor and needy from the one who robs him?"

⁴ May he provide justice for the poor of the people, save the children of the needy, and crush the oppressor.

¹² Indeed he will deliver the needy who is crying for help, and the afflicted who has no helper. ¹³ He will take pity on the helpless and needy, and the lives of the needy he will save.

³¹ for he stands at the right hand of the needy, to save him from those judging his life.*

¹² I know* that Yahweh will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and justice for the needy.

⁷ But against all the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* from a man to an animal, a dog will not even _⌊bark_⌋,* so that you will know that Yahweh makes a distinction between Egypt and Israel.'

⁸ He raises up the poor from the dust. From the ash heap he lifts up the needy, to cause them to sit with noble people and to cause them to inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth belong to Yahweh and he has set the inhabited world on them. ⁹ He will guard the feet of his faithful* ones, but the wicked will be destroyed* in the darkness, because a man will not prevail by his might.

¹⁸ for the needy shall not always be forgotten; the hope of the poor shall never perish.

¹¹ However, the king will rejoice in God. Everyone who swears an oath by him will boast, because the mouth of the liars will be stopped.

⁴² The upright see it and are glad, and all wickedness shuts its mouth.

³² And what will one answer the messengers of the nation?
That Yahweh has founded Zion, and the needy of his people will take refuge in it.

¹² Return to the fortress, O prisoners of hope; today I am declaring that I will repay you double.

¹⁹ Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those under the law, in order that every mouth may be closed and the whole world may become accountable to God.

¹² Blessed is the man, O Yah, whom you instruct and teach from your law,

¹¹ Do not despise the discipline of Yahweh, my child. Do not be weary of his reproof ¹² because whomever Yahweh will love, he will rebuke, as a father delights in his son.

¹⁸ Indeed I heard Ephraim pitying themselves, 'You disciplined me, and I was disciplined, like a calf that is not trained. Bring me back and let me return, for you are Yahweh my God.

⁵ And have you completely forgotten the exhortation which instructs you as sons?
"My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, or give up when you are corrected by him. ⁶ For the Lord disciplines the one whom he loves, and punishes every son whom he accepts."* ⁷ Endure it for discipline. God is dealing with you as sons. For what son is there whom a father does not discipline? ⁸ But if you are without discipline, in which all legitimate sons* have become participants, then you are illegitimate and not sons. ⁹ Furthermore, we have had _⌊our earthly fathers_⌋* who disciplined us, and we respected them. Will we not much rather subject ourselves to the Father of spirits and live? ¹⁰ For they disciplined us for a few days according to what seemed appropriate to them, but he does so for our benefit, in order that we can have a share in his holiness. ¹¹ Now all discipline seems for the moment not to be joyful but painful, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness for those who are trained by it.

¹² Blessed is the person* who endures testing, because when he* is approved he will receive the crown of life that he* has promised to those who love him.

¹¹ Behold, we consider blessed those who have endured. You have heard about the patient endurance of Job, and you saw the outcome from the Lord, that the Lord is compassionate and merciful.

¹⁹ As many as I love, I reprove and discipline. Be zealous, therefore, and repent!

³⁹ See, now, that I, even I am he, and there is not a god besides me; I put to death and I give life; I wound and I heal; there is not one who delivers from my hand!

⁶ Yahweh kills and restores alive, he brings down to Sheol* and raises up.

³ He is the one who heals the brokenhearted, and binds up their wounds.

²⁶ And the light of the full moon will be like the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be sevenfold, like the light of seven days, on the day when Yahweh binds up the breakage of his people, and he heals the wound of his blow.

¹ Come, let us return to Yahweh; because it is he who has torn, and he will heal us; he has struck us down and will bind us up.

¹⁹ Many are the distresses of the righteous, but Yahweh delivers him out of them all.

³ For he will deliver* you from the snare of the fowler, from the plague of destruction. ⁴ With his feathers he will cover you, and under his wings you can take refuge. His faithfulness will be a shield and a buckler.* ⁵ You need not fear the terror of the night, or the arrow that flies by day, ⁶ or the plague that spreads in the darkness, or the destruction that devastates at noon. ⁷ A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. ⁸ You will only look with your eyes, and see the punishment of the wicked. ⁹ For you, O Yahweh, are my refuge. You have made the Most High your dwelling place.* ¹⁰ No harm will befall you, and no plague will come near your tent.

¹⁶ For seven times the righteous will fall, but he will rise, but the wicked will be overthrown by calamity.

⁸ For we do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning our affliction that happened in the province of Asia,* that we were burdened to an extraordinary degree, beyond our strength, so that we were in despair even of living.

⁹ then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to reserve the unrighteous to be punished at* the day of judgment,

⁷ And God sent me before you all to preserve for you a remnant in the land and to keep alive among you many survivors.

⁶ The crows were bringing bread and meat in the morning for him and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the wadi.*

³ Though an army encamp against me, my heart will not fear. Though war arise against me, even in this I will remain confident.

¹⁹ to deliver their soul from death and to keep them alive in famine.

¹⁹ They will not be put to shame in distressing times,* and in the days of famine they will be satisfied.

⁷ Surely a man cannot redeem a brother. He cannot give to God his ransom

¹⁰ who gives victory to kings, who rescues David his servant from the evil sword.

³ Yahweh will not cause a righteous person* to go hungry, but the craving of the wicked he will thwart.

¹⁶ That one will live on the heights; the fortresses of rocks will be his refuge. His food will be given; his waters* will endure.

¹⁴ Should I redeem them from _⌊the power_⌋* of Sheol? * Should I deliver them from death? Where are your plagues, O Death? Where is your destruction, O Sheol?* Compassion is hidden from my eyes.

¹⁷ Though the fig tree does not blossom, nor there be fruit on the vines; the yield of the olive tree fails, and the cultivated fields do not yield food; the flock is cut off from the animal pen, and there is no cattle in the stalls,

⁶ And you are going to hear about wars and rumors of wars. See to it that you are not alarmed, for this must happen, but the end is not yet.

²⁰ You will hide them in the protection of your presence from the plots of man. You will hide them in a shelter from the strife of tongues.

²¹ The _⌊buttery words_⌋* of his mouth were smooth, but there was battle in his heart. His words were smoother than oil, but they were drawn swords.

⁴ My soul is among lions. I lie down among those who devour— the children* of humankind whose teeth are spears and arrows and whose tongues are sharp swords.

⁵ You need not fear the terror of the night, or the arrow that flies by day, ⁶ or the plague that spreads in the darkness, or the destruction that devastates at noon. ⁷ A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.

¹⁸ There is one who speaks rashly, like the thrust of a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

¹⁷ Every weapon formed against you shall not succeed, and you shall declare guilty every tongue that rises against you for judgment. This is the inheritance of the servants of Yahweh, and their _⌊legal right_⌋* from me,"
_⌊declares_⌋* Yahweh.

¹⁸ Then they said, "Come and let us plan plans against Jeremiah, for instruction will not be lost from the priest, nor advice from the wise man, nor the word from the prophet. Come and _⌊let us bring charges against him_⌋,* and let us not listen attentively to any of his words."

⁵ So also the tongue is a small member of the body* and boasts great things. Behold how small a fire sets ablaze how great a forest! ⁶ And the tongue is a fire! The world of unrighteousness,* the tongue, is set among our members, defiling the whole body and setting on fire _⌊the course of human existence_⌋*, being set on fire by hell. ⁷ For every species of animals and birds, of reptiles and sea creatures, is being tamed and has been tamed by the human species, ⁸ but no human being is able to tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.

²¹ This is the word that Yahweh has spoken concerning him:
She despises you, she scorns you, the virgin daughter of Zion. Behind you the daughter of Jerusalem shakes her head.

¹³ You will tread on lion and viper; you will trample young lion and serpent.

⁹ No lion shall be there, and no ferocious wild beast shall go up it. It shall not be found there, but* the redeemed shall walk there.

²⁵ The wolf and the lamb shall feed like one, and the lion shall eat straw like the ox, but* dust shall be the serpent's food. They shall do no evil, and they shall not destroy on all _⌊my holy mountain_⌋,"* says Yahweh.

²⁵ And I will make them a covenant of peace, and I will put an end to wild animals* from the land, and they will dwell in the desert _⌊safely_⌋,* and they will sleep in the forest.

¹⁸ I will make a covenant for them on that day, with the animals* of the field, with the birds* of the heaven, and with the creeping things* of the ground; the bow, the sword, and the war I will abolish from the land, and I will let them lie down in safety.

⁶ And I will give peace in the land, and you shall lie down, and there shall not be _⌊anybody who makes you afraid_⌋,* and I will remove harmful animals from the land, and _⌊no sword shall pass through your land_⌋.*

¹² In their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone. ¹³ You will tread on lion and viper; you will trample young lion and serpent.

⁶ And a wolf shall _⌊stay_⌋* with a lamb, and a leopard shall lie down with a kid, and a calf and a lion and a fatling together _⌊as a small boy leads_⌋* them. ⁷ And a cow and a bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together. And a lion shall eat straw like the cattle. ⁸ And _⌊an infant_⌋* shall play over a serpent's hole, and _⌊a toddler_⌋* shall put his hand on a viper's hole. ⁹ They will not injure and they will not destroy on all of my _⌊holy mountain_⌋,* for the earth will be full of the knowledge of Yahweh, as the waters cover the sea.

¹⁵ "If a fierce animal I should let cross through the land, and it should make it childless and it will be a desolation, so that there will not be one crossing over the land _⌊due to_⌋* the presence of the animal, ¹⁶ even if these three men were in the midst of it, _⌊as surely as I live_⌋,"* _⌊declares_⌋* the Lord Yahweh, "surely they will not save sons and daughters; _⌊they themselves alone_⌋,* they will be saved, but the land will be a desolation.

²² My God sent his angel and he shut the mouth of the lions and they did not* hurt me, _⌊because_⌋* before him _⌊I was found_⌋* blameless, and also before you, O king, I have not done any wrong."

³⁸ For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, ³⁹ nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

⁶ "Blessed will you be _⌊when you come in and blessed will you be when you go out_⌋.*

³ When David and his men came to the city, _⌊they saw_⌋,* and it was burned with fire, and their wives, their sons, and their daughters had been taken captive.

⁶ If you are pure and upright, indeed,* now he will rouse himself for you, and he will restore your righteous abode.

⁶ The light becomes dark in his tent, and his lamp above him is put out.

¹⁵ "_⌊Nothing_⌋* remains for him in his tent; sulfur is scattered upon his dwelling place.

²¹ Surely these are the dwellings of the godless, and this is the dwelling place of him who knows not God."

⁷ "Why do the wicked live, grow old, even grow mighty in power? ⁸ With them their offspring are established _⌊before them_⌋,* and their descendants before their eyes. ⁹ Their houses are safe without fear, and the rod of God is not upon them.

¹³ His soul will lodge in prosperity, and his offspring will possess the land.

¹⁰ No harm will befall you, and no plague will come near your tent.

⁴ They wandered in the wilderness, in a desert. They could find no way* to a city to inhabit.

⁴⁰ he pours contempt on princes and causes them to wander in a trackless waste.

⁷ Yahweh will protect you from all evil;* he will protect your life. ⁸ Yahweh will protect your going out and your coming in from now until forever.

⁵ Then Yahweh will create over all of the site* of _⌊Mount Zion_⌋* and over her assembly a cloud by day and smoke and the brightness of flaming fire by night. Indeed, over all the glory there will be a canopy, ⁶ and it will be a shelter for shade from the heat by day, and a refuge and a hiding place from rainstorm and from rain.

⁵ And he brought him outside and said, "Look toward the heavens and count the stars if you are able to count them." And he said to him, "So shall your offspring be."

⁹ And I will turn to you, and I will make you fruitful, and I will make you numerous; and I will keep my covenant with you.

⁴ "Blessed will be the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your ground and the fruit of your livestock, _⌊the calf of your cattle and the lambs of your flock_⌋.*

¹³ _⌊And he had_⌋* seven sons and three daughters. ¹⁴ And he called the name of the first Jemimah and the name of the second Keziah and the name of the third Qeren-Happuk. ¹⁵ And beautiful women were not found in all the land like Job's daughters, and their father gave to them an inheritance in the midst of their brothers. ¹⁶ And Job lived after this one hundred and forty years, and he saw his sons and his _⌊grandsons_⌋* for four generations.

¹⁶ May there be an abundance of grain in the land even on the top of the mountains. May his crop* sway like the trees of Lebanon, and may those from the city blossom like the grass of the earth.

² His _⌊descendants_⌋* will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed.

³ Look, children* are the heritage* of Yahweh; the fruit of the womb is a reward. ⁴ Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children* of one's youth. ⁵ Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them.* They shall not be put to shame when they speak with enemies at the gate.

³ Your wife will be like a fruitful vine _⌊within_⌋* your house. Your children* will be like olive shoots about your table. ⁴ Look, for thus shall a man be blessed _⌊who fears Yahweh_⌋.* ⁵ May Yahweh bless you from Zion, that you may see the good of Jerusalem all the days of your life, ⁶ and that you may see your children's children. May peace be upon Israel.

³ For I will pour out water on a thirsty land and streams on dry ground. I will pour my spirit out on your descendants* and my blessing on your offspring. ⁴ And they shall sprout _⌊among_⌋* the grass like willows by a watercourse of water.

¹⁵ And as for you, you shall go to your ancestors* in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age.

⁸ And Abraham passed away and died in a good old age, old and full of years. And he was gathered to his people.

¹⁶ And Job lived after this one hundred and forty years, and he saw his sons and his _⌊grandsons_⌋* for four generations. ¹⁷ Then* Job died old and full of days.

¹⁶ With _⌊long life_⌋* I will satisfy him, and show him my salvation.

¹¹ For by me your days shall increase, and years of life shall multiply for you.

²⁷ The fear of Yahweh adds life, but the years of the wicked are shortened.

¹³ to keep the commandments of Yahweh and his statutes that I am commanding you today _⌊for your own good_⌋.*

⁸ "Indeed,* please inquire of former generations, and consider _⌊what their ancestors have found_⌋,* ⁹ for we are of yesterday, and we do not know, for our days on earth are a shadow. ¹⁰ Will they themselves* not teach you and _⌊tell you_⌋* and _⌊utter_⌋* words from their heart?

² "Truly indeed you* are the people, and wisdom will die with you.*

¹⁷ "I will show you, listen to me; and what I have seen, I will tell*—

² "Can a man be of use to God? Yes, can the wise be of use to him?

¹¹ "Look, I waited for your* words; I listened for your* insight, until you searched out _⌊what to say_⌋.* ¹² And I directed my attention to you;* and, look, there is no one for Job who refuted, answering his words among you.

² The works of Yahweh are great, studied* by all who delight in them.

³ For if you cry out for understanding,* if you lift* your voice for insight, ⁴ if you seek her like silver and search her out _⌊like treasure_⌋,* ⁵ then you will understand the fear of Yahweh, and the knowledge of God you will find.

¹² If you are wise, you are wise for yourself, and if you scoff, alone you shall bear it.
