¹ Then* Job answered and said, ² "If only my vexation could be well weighed, and my calamity could be lifted up together with it in the balances, ³ for then it would be heavier than the sand of the seas; therefore my words have been rash, ⁴ for the arrows of Shaddai are in me; my spirit drinks their poison; the terrors of God are arrayed against me. ⁵ Does the wild ass bray over grass, or the ox bellow over its fodder? ⁶ Can tasteless food be eaten without* salt, or is there taste in the white of a marshmallow plant? ⁷ _⌊I refused_⌋* to touch them; they are like _⌊food that will make me ill_⌋.* ⁸ "_⌊O that_⌋* my request may come, and that God may grant my hope, ⁹ that* God would decide that* he would crush me, that he would let loose his hand and _⌊kill me_⌋.* ¹⁰ But* it will still be my consolation, and I would recoil in _⌊unrelenting_⌋* pain, for I have not denied the words of the Holy One. ¹¹ What is my strength, that I should wait? And what is my end, that _⌊I should hold out_⌋?* ¹² Or is my strength like the strength of stones? Or is my flesh bronze? ¹³ _⌊Indeed_⌋,* my help is not in me, and any success is driven from me. ¹⁴ "Loyal love* should come for the afflicted from his friend, even if* he forsakes the fear of Shaddai. ¹⁵ My companions are treacherous like a torrent-bed; like a streambed of wadis* they flow away, ¹⁶ which are growing dark because of ice upon them, it will pile up snow. ¹⁷ In time they dry up, they disappear; when it is hot, they vanish from their place. ¹⁸ The paths of their way wind around; they go up into the wasteland, and they perish. ¹⁹ The caravans of Tema looked; the traveling merchants of Sheba hope for them. ²⁰ They are disappointed, because they trusted; they came _⌊here_⌋* and they are confounded. ²¹ "For now you* have become _⌊such_⌋;* you see terrors, and you fear. ²² Is it because I have said, 'Give to me,' or,* 'Offer a bribe for me from your wealth'? ²³ or,* 'Save me from the foe's hand,' or,* 'Ransom me from the tyrants' hand'? ²⁴ Teach me, and I myself* will be silent; and make me understand how I have gone astray. ²⁵ How painful are _⌊upright words_⌋!* But* what does _⌊your reproof_⌋* reprove? ²⁶ Do you intend to reprove my words* and consider the words of a desperate man as wind? ²⁷ Even over the orphan you would cast the lot, and you would bargain over your friend. ²⁸ "_⌊Therefore_⌋* be prepared, turn to me, and I surely will not lie to your face.* ²⁹ Please turn, let no injustice happen; indeed,* turn, _⌊my righteousness is still intact_⌋.* ³⁰ Is there injustice on my tongue? Or can my palate not discern calamity?*

¹ Then* Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

⁵ But now it has come to you, and you are worn out; it touches you, and you are horrified.

² "Even today my complaint is bitter; my hand is heavy in addition to my groaning.

⁶ let him weigh me in the balance of justice, and let God know my blamelessness.

¹⁹ "Teach us what we should say to him; we cannot draw up our case because of the presence of darkness. ²⁰ Should he be told that I want to speak? Or did a man say that he would be communicated with?

⁵ Many things, O Yahweh my God, you have done— your wonderful deeds and your thoughts toward us. There is none to compare with you. If I tried to proclaim and tell of them, they would be too numerous to count.

⁴ You hold open my eyelids. I am troubled and cannot speak.

³ Heavy is a stone and weighty is sand, but the provocation of a fool is heavier than both of them.

²⁸ Come to me, all of you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.

²³ I will heap disasters upon them; my arrows I will spend on them. ²⁴ They will become weakened by famine, and consumed by plague and bitter pestilence; and the teeth of wild animals I will send against them, with the poison of the creeping things in the dust;

⁴² I will make my arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh with the blood of the slain, and captives* from the heads* of the leaders of the enemy.'

¹⁷ who crushes me with a tempest and multiplies* my wounds without cause.

¹² "I was at ease, then* he broke me in two, and he seized me by my neck; then* he shattered me and set me up as a target for him. ¹³ His archers surround me; he slashes open my kidneys, and he does not have compassion; he pours out my gall on the ground. ¹⁴ He breached me _⌊breach upon breach_⌋;* he rushes at me like a warrior.

²⁰ Let his eyes see his decay, and let him drink from the wrath of Shaddai,

¹⁵ Terrors are turned upon me; my honor is pursued as by the wind, and my hope of deliverance passed by like a cloud.

²³ Indeed, the disaster from God was a dread for me, and _⌊I was powerless_⌋* because of his majesty.

¹³ And he has prepared for him weapons of death. He has made his arrows fiery shafts.

¹⁴ And he shot his arrows and scattered them,* and many lightning bolts and routed them.

¹² For you will _⌊turn them to flight_⌋;* you will aim arrows on your bowstrings at their faces.

² For your arrows have sunk into me, and your hand has pressed down on me.

⁵ Your arrows are sharp; peoples fall under you in the midst of the king's enemies.

¹⁵ I am afflicted and perishing from my youth. I bear your terrors. I am distraught.* ¹⁶ Your burning anger has passed over me; your sudden fears have destroyed me.

⁷ Quickly answer me, O Yahweh; my spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me, or I will become like those descending to the pit.

¹⁴ The spirit of a man will endure his sickness, but a broken spirit, who may bear it?

¹² He has bent his bow and set me as the target for the arrow. ¹³ He shot _⌊the arrows of his quiver_⌋* into my kidneys.

³³ And he took along Peter and James and John with him, and he began to be distressed and troubled. ³⁴ And he said to them, "My soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake."

³⁴ And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" (which is translated, "My God, my God, _⌊why_⌋* have you forsaken me?")*

¹¹ Therefore, because we* know the fear of the Lord, we are attempting to persuade people, but we are revealed to God, and I hope to be revealed in your consciences.

¹ For the music director. A maskil of the sons of Korah.*
As a deer longs for streams of water, so my soul longs for you, O God.

¹⁴ who causes grass to grow for the cattle and herbs for the service of humankind, to bring forth food from the earth,

⁶ And wild asses stand on the barren heights, they gasp for breath like the jackals. Their eyes fail because there is no vegetation."

¹⁸ How the beasts* groan; the herds of cattle wander around because there is no pasture for them; the flocks of sheep are in distress. ¹⁹ To you, O Yahweh, I cry out, because fire has devoured the pastures of the desert, and flames* burned all the trees of the field. ²⁰ Also, the beasts of the field long for you, because the courses of water are dried up, and fire has devoured the pastures of the desert.

¹³ Also all* of your grain offerings you must season with salt; you* must not omit the salt of your God's covenant from your offering.

²⁵ How painful are _⌊upright words_⌋!* But* what does _⌊your reproof_⌋* reprove?

³⁰ Is there injustice on my tongue? Or can my palate not discern calamity?*

¹¹ Does not the ear test words and the palate taste food for itself?

² "I have heard many things like these; all of you are _⌊miserable comforters_⌋.*

³ for the ear tests words, and the palate tastes _⌊food_⌋.*

¹⁰³ How smooth* are your words* to my palate, more than honey in my mouth.

³⁴ "Now salt is good, but if salt becomes tasteless, with what will it be made salty?

⁶ Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how it is necessary for you to answer each one.

⁴ For it is impossible concerning those who have once been enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and become sharers of the Holy Spirit, ⁵ and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the coming age,

¹² She said, "_⌊As Yahweh your God lives_⌋,* surely I do not have a cake, _⌊but only a handful of flour_⌋* in the jar and a little olive oil in the jug. Here I am gathering a few pieces of wood, and I will go and prepare it for me and my son, that we might eat it and die."

²⁷ and say, 'Thus says the king: "Put this fellow in the house of imprisonment and feed him reduced rations of food and water until I come in peace." '"

²⁴ For* my sighing comes _⌊before_⌋* my bread,* and my groanings gush forth like water

⁹ Indeed, I eat ashes like bread and mix my drink with tears*

¹⁴ And I said, "Ah, Lord Yahweh! Look! I have not been defiling myself, and a dead body and mangled carcass I have not eaten from my childhood until now, and _⌊unclean meat_⌋* has not come into my mouth!"

¹⁶ And he said to me, "Son of man,* look, I am going to break the _⌊supply_⌋* of bread in Jerusalem, and they will eat bread by weight, _⌊anxiously_⌋,* and _⌊rationed water_⌋,* and they will drink with horror,

¹⁸ "Son of man,* you must eat your food with trembling, and your water with shuddering, and with anxiety you must drink. ¹⁹ And you must say to the people of the land, 'Thus says the Lord Yahweh to the inhabitants of Jerusalem about the land of Israel: "They will eat their food with anxiety and their water they will drink with horror, because their land will be desolate from* its fullness because of all the violence of _⌊those who are dwelling in it_⌋.*

³ I had not eaten any choice food, and meat and wine did not enter my mouth, and _⌊I did not use any ointment_⌋* _⌊until the end of three whole weeks_⌋.*

¹¹ What is my strength, that I should wait? And what is my end, that _⌊I should hold out_⌋?* ¹² Or is my strength like the strength of stones? Or is my flesh bronze? ¹³ _⌊Indeed_⌋,* my help is not in me, and any success is driven from me.

¹⁴ if I call to the pit, 'You are my father,' to the maggot, 'You are my mother or* my sister,' ¹⁵ where* then is my hope? And _⌊who will see my hope_⌋?* ¹⁶ Will they go down to the bars of Sheol? Or shall we descend together into the dust?"

⁸¹ My soul languishes for your salvation; I hope in your word.

¹⁴ I am not able to carry all these people along alone; they are too heavy for me. ¹⁵ If this is how you are going to treat me, please kill me immediately if I find favor in your eyes, and do not let me see my misery."

⁴ Then he went into the wilderness one day's journey, and he went and sat under a certain broom tree. Then _⌊he asked Yahweh that he might die_⌋,* and he said, "It is enough now, Yahweh; take my life, for I am no better than my ancestors."*

²⁰ "Why does he* give light to one in misery and life to those bitter of soul, ²¹ who wait for death, but* _⌊it does not come_⌋,* and search* for it more than for treasures, ²² who rejoice _⌊exceedingly_⌋,* and they are glad when they find the grave?

¹⁵ So* my inner self* will choose* strangling— death more than my _⌊existence_⌋.* ¹⁶ I loathe my life; I would not live forever; depart from me, for my days are a breath.

¹³ "_⌊O that_⌋* you would conceal me in Sheol, that you would hide me _⌊until your wrath is past_⌋,* that you would appoint a set time for me and remember me.

²¹ "Pity me, pity me, you my friends, for God's hand has touched me.

⁴ For day and night your hand was heavy upon me. My vigor was changed into the dry heat of summer. Selah

¹⁰ Look! I have refined you, but* not like* silver; I have chosen you in the furnace of misery. ¹¹ For my own sake, for my own sake I do it; for why should it* be defiled? And I will not give my glory to another." ¹² "Listen to me, Jacob, and Israel, _⌊whom I called_⌋:* I am he. I am the first; also I am the last. ¹³ Indeed, my hand founded the earth, and my right hand spread out the heavens; when I summon* them, they stand in position together.

³ And so then, Yahweh, please take my life from me, because for me death is better than life!"

⁸ _⌊And when the sun rose_⌋,* God appointed a scorching east wind, and the sun beat down on Jonah's head and he grew faint. _⌊And he asked that he could die_⌋* and said, "My death is better than my life!"

⁶ And in those days people will seek death and will never find it, and they will long to die, and death will flee from them.

² "Speak to all the community of the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* and say to them, 'You* must be holy, because I, Yahweh your* God, am holy.

²⁰ Yahweh will not be willing to forgive him, for by then the anger of Yahweh will smoke, and his passion against that man and all the curses written in this scroll will descend on him, and Yahweh will blot out his name from under heaven.

² There is no one holy like Yahweh, for there is no one besides you, and there is no rock like our God.

²² who rejoice _⌊exceedingly_⌋,* and they are glad when they find the grave?

⁴ He is wise in* heart and mighty in* strength; who has resisted him and succeeded?*

³³ The clods of the valley are sweet to him; everyone will follow after him, and _⌊before_⌋* him _⌊they are innumerable_⌋.*

²² Please receive instruction from his mouth, and place his words in your heart.

¹² From the commandment of his lips, indeed* I have not departed; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily food.

³⁰ The mouth of the righteous utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks justice.

⁹ I have brought good tidings of righteousness in the great congregation. Look, I have not shut my lips. O Yahweh, _⌊you surely know that_⌋.* ¹⁰ Your righteousness I have not hidden in the midst of my heart. I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation. I have not concealed your loyal love or your faithfulness from the great congregation.

¹⁷ O God, you have taught me from my youth, and up to now I have proclaimed your wonderful deeds. ¹⁸ And even when I am old and gray, O God, do not abandon me until I proclaim your _⌊strength_⌋* to this generation, your power to every one that comes after.

¹³ With my lips I have told of all the ordinances of your mouth.

¹¹ turn aside from the way, turn aside from the path, put an end to the holy one of Israel from our face." ¹² Therefore the holy one of Israel says this:
"Because you are rejecting this word and you trust in oppression and _⌊cunning_⌋* and you rely on it,

¹⁵ For thus says the high and lofty one who resides forever, and whose name is holy:
"I reside in a high and holy place, and with the _⌊contrite_⌋* and humble of spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the _⌊contrite_⌋.*

⁹ _⌊I will not execute_⌋* _⌊my fierce anger_⌋,* I will not again destroy Ephraim; because I am God and not a mortal,* the Holy One in your midst; and I will not come in wrath.

¹² Are you not from of old, O Yahweh my God, my Holy One? You* shall not die. O Yahweh, you have marked them* for judgment; O Rock, you have established them* for reproof.

³ God came from Teman; the Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah His splendor covers the heavens, and his praise fills the earth.

²⁰ how I did not shrink from proclaiming to you anything that would be profitable, and from teaching you in public and from house to house,

²⁷ for I did not shrink from proclaiming to you the whole purpose of God.

³² Indeed, he who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all, how will he not also, together with him, freely give us all things?

⁴ For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but held them captive in Tartarus with chains of darkness and handed them over to be kept for judgment, ⁵ and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a proclaimer of righteousness, _⌊and seven others_⌋* when he* brought a flood on the world of the ungodly,

⁷ "And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write:
"This is what the holy one, the true one, the one who has the key of David, the one who opens and no one can shut, and who shuts and no one can open, says:

⁸ And the four living creatures, _⌊each one_⌋* of them, had six wings apiece, full of eyes around and inside, and they do not have rest day and night, saying,
"Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God All-Powerful,* the one who was and the one who is and the one who is coming!"

⁵ My body is clothed with maggots and clods of dust; my skin hardens, then* it gives way again. ⁶ "My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and they come to an end _⌊without hope_⌋.* ⁷ Remember that my life is a breath; my eye will not return to see good.

²⁰ Are not my days few? Let him leave me alone; let him turn from me, and let me rejoice a little.

²⁵ Will you* terrify a blown leaf? And will you* pursue dry stubble?

²⁸ And he himself *wastes away like something rotten, like a garment that the moth has eaten.

¹ "My spirit is pulled down; my days are extinguished; the graveyard is for me.

⁴ As for me, is my complaint for human beings? And if so, why cannot I be impatient?

⁵ Look, you have made my days mere handbreadths, and my lifespan as nothing next to you. Surely every person standing firm is complete vanity. Selah

⁵ You sweep them away like a flood. They fall asleep.* In the morning they are like grass that sprouts anew. ⁶ In the morning it blossoms and sprouts anew; by evening it withers and dries up. ⁷ For we are brought to an end by your anger, and we hasten off* by your wrath. ⁸ You have put our iniquities before you, our hidden sins into the light of your countenance. ⁹ For all of our days dwindle away in your rage; we complete our years like a sigh. ¹⁰ As for the days of our years, within them are seventy years or if by strength eighty years, and their pride* is trouble and disaster, for it passes quickly and we fly away.

²³ He has broken my strength along the way; he has cut short my days.

¹⁴ For he knows our frame.* He remembers that we are dust. ¹⁵ As for man, his days are like the grass. As the flower of the field, so he blossoms. ¹⁶ When the wind passes over it, it is no more, and its place knows it no longer.

¹⁸ Its bones are tubes of copper, its limbs like rods of iron.

²⁴ Its heart is cast as stone; yes,* it is cast as the lower millstone.

² "Truly indeed you* are the people, and wisdom will die with you.* ³ _⌊I also have insight_⌋* like you;* I am not more inferior than you.* And _⌊who does not know things like these_⌋?*

² _⌊What you* know_⌋,* I myself* also know— I am not more inferior than you.*

²⁸ "If you* say, 'How will we persecute him?' And 'The root of the trouble is found' in me,*

² "How you* have helped _⌊one who has no power_⌋!* How you* have assisted the arm _⌊that has no strength_⌋!*

¹² For our reason for boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience that we conducted ourselves in the world, and especially toward you, in holiness* and purity of motive from God, not* in merely human wisdom, but by the grace of God.

⁴ But let each one examine his own work, and then he will have a reason for boasting in himself alone, and not in someone else.

¹¹ And Abraham said, "Because I thought, surely there is no fear of God in this place; they will kill me on account of the matter of my wife.

³ Look, you have instructed many, and you have strengthened weak hands. ⁴ Your words have raised up the one who stumbles, and you have strengthened knees giving way. ⁵ But now it has come to you, and you are worn out; it touches you, and you are horrified.

⁴ "_⌊What is worse_⌋,* you yourself* are doing away with fear, and you are lessening meditation _⌊before_⌋* God.

⁵ I could* encourage you with my mouth, and the solace of my lips would* ease the pain.

¹ For the music director. Of David, the servant of Yahweh.*
An oracle: the wicked has rebellion in the midst of his* heart. There is no fear of God before his eyes. ² For he flatters himself in his eyes, hating to detect his iniquity.* ³ The words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit. He has ceased to have insight and to do good.

¹⁷ The friend loves at all times*, but a brother is born for adversity.

⁴⁰ But the other answered and* rebuked him, saying, "Do you not even fear God, because you are undergoing the same condemnation?

¹⁵ Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.

²⁶ And if one member suffers, all the members suffer together; if a member* is honored, all the members rejoice with it.

²⁹ Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is caused to sin, and I do not burn with indignation?

² Carry the burdens of one another, and so fulfill the law of Christ.

³ Remember the prisoners, as though you were fellow-prisoners; remember* the mistreated, as though you yourselves also are being mistreated* in the body.

¹⁹ All _⌊my intimate friends_⌋* abhor me, and these whom I have loved have turned against me.

¹¹ My friends and companions stand aloof from my affliction, and my relatives stand afar off.

⁹ Even _⌊my close friend_⌋,* whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me.

¹² For it is not an enemy that taunts me, or I could bear it. It is not one who hates me that magnifies himself over me, or I could hide myself from him. ¹³ But it is you, a man my equal, my friend and confidant. ¹⁴ We who would take sweet counsel together; in the house* of God we would walk with the throng.

¹⁸ You have removed loved one and friend far from me, my acquaintances far from my darkness.

⁴ "Let everyone be on your guard against his neighbor, and you must not trust in any brother, for everyone surely betrays, and every neighbor goes about with slander. ⁵ And everyone deceives his neighbor, and they do not speak the truth, they have taught their tongues* to speak lies,* they are tired from going astray.

¹⁸ Why is my pain endless, and my wound incurable? It refuses to become healed. Truly you are to me like a deceitful brook, waters that are not trustworthy.

¹⁴ All your lovers have forgotten you, they do not care for you. I have struck you with the blow of an enemy, the punishment of the cruel, because of the greatness of your guilt, your sins are numerous.

⁵ Do not put faith in a friend; put no trust in a close friend. Guard the doorways of your mouth from the one who lies in your lap. ⁶ For a son treats a father with contempt; a daughter rises up against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; the enemies of a man are the men of his own house.

¹⁸ "I am not speaking about all of you. I know whom I have chosen, but in order that the scripture would be fulfilled, 'The one who eats my bread has lifted up his heel against me.'*

³² Behold, an hour is coming—and has come—that you will be scattered each one to his own home,* and you will leave me alone. And I am not alone, because the Father is with me.

¹² These are the ones feasting together without reverence, hidden reefs at your love feasts, caring for themselves, waterless clouds carried away by winds, late autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, uprooted,

¹ Elijah the Tishbite from Tishbe of Gilead said to Ahab, "_⌊As Yahweh lives_⌋,* the God of Israel before whom I stand, there shall surely not be dew nor rain these years _⌊except by my command_⌋."*

¹⁹ Drought and heat snatch away the snow waters, like Sheol snatches away those* who have sinned.

⁷ And the sons of Cush: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabteca. The sons of Raamah: Sheba and Dedan.

³ And Jokshan fathered Sheba and Dedan. And the sons of Dedan were Asshurim and Letushim and Leummim.

¹⁵ Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.

¹ Now the queen of Sheba had heard of the fame of Solomon regarding the name of Yahweh, and she came to test him with hard questions.

¹⁰ Let the kings of Tarshish and the islands bring tribute. Let the kings of Sheba and Seba present gifts,

¹⁴ _⌊When you happen to meet_⌋* the thirsty, bring water. Inhabitants of the land of Tema came to meet the fugitive with his bread.

²³ and Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, and all those who are trimmed to the side;

²² The traders of Sheba and Raamah were trading with you, with the finest of every spice and with every precious stone and gold; they exchanged all these for your merchandise. ²³ Haran and Canneh and Eden, the traders of Sheba, Assyria, and Kilmad were trading with you.

³ And their nobles send their servants for water. They come to the pits, they find no water. They return with their vessels _⌊empty_⌋.* They are ashamed, and they are confounded, and they cover their heads.* ⁴ Because of the ground, which is cracked because there was no rain on the ground. The farmers are ashamed, they cover their heads.*

¹³ O Yahweh, the hope of Israel, all those who forsake you will be put to shame, and those who turn aside from you in the earth will be recorded, for they have forsaken the fountain of living water, Yahweh.

⁵ and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

³³ just as it is written,
"Behold, I am laying in Zion _⌊a stone that causes people to stumble_⌋*, and _⌊a rock that causes them to fall_⌋*, and the one who believes in him will not be put to shame."*

¹¹ Thus* Job's three friends heard of this calamity that had come upon him. So* each set out from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite. And they met* together to come to console him and to comfort him. ¹² Thus* they lifted up their eyes* from afar, but* they did not recognize him, so* they raised their voice, and they wept, and each man tore his outer garment* and threw dust on their heads _⌊toward the sky_⌋.* ¹³ Then* they sat with him on the ground for seven days and seven nights, but* no one spoke* a word to him because they saw that _⌊his_⌋* suffering was very great.

¹⁵ My companions are treacherous like a torrent-bed; like a streambed of wadis* they flow away,

⁴ "But* you* _⌊whitewash with lies_⌋;* all of you* are _⌊worthless healers_⌋.*

⁹ Only a vapor* are men of low degree, a deception are men of high degree. _⌊Weighed_⌋* in a balance, together they are lighter than a vapor.

⁷ All the brothers of the poor, if they hate him, how much more will his friends keep away from him. He pursues them with words, and they are gone.*

²² Turn away from humanity, who has breath in its nostrils,* for by* what is it esteemed?

⁵ Thus says Yahweh,
"Cursed is the person who trusts in humankind and makes flesh his _⌊strength_⌋,* and turns aside his heart from Yahweh. ⁶ And he will be like a juniper in the wilderness,* and he will not see when good comes, and he will dwell in the parched places in the desert,* in a land of salt flats,* where no one lives.

⁹ We tried to heal Babylon, and she was not healed. Forsake her and let us go each one to his country, for her judgment has reached to the heavens, and it has been lifted up to the skies.

³¹ Then Jesus said to them, "You will all fall away because of me during this night, for it is written,
'I will strike the shepherd and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.'*

⁵⁶ But all this has happened in order that the scriptures of the prophets would be fulfilled." Then the disciples all abandoned him and* fled.

¹⁶ At my first defense, no one came to my aid, but they all deserted me; may it not be counted against them.

⁹ And the kings of the earth will weep and mourn over her, those who committed sexual immorality and lived sensually with her, when they see the smoke of her burning, ¹⁰ standing _⌊far off_⌋* because of the fear of her torment, saying,
"Woe, woe, the great city, Babylon the powerful city, because in one hour your judgment has come!"

¹⁷ because in one hour such great wealth has been laid waste!"
And every shipmaster and _⌊every seafarer_⌋* and sailors and all those who labor on the sea stood _⌊far off_⌋* ¹⁸ and began to cry out when they* saw the smoke of her burning, saying, "Who is like the great city?"

³ Here I am! Testify against me before Yahweh and before his anointed one! Whose ox have I taken? Or whose donkey have I taken? Or whom have I exploited? Whom have I oppressed? Or from whose hand have I taken a bribe, that I may shut my eyes _⌊regarding_⌋* him?-then I will restore it to you."

¹¹ So* all his brothers and all his sisters and all those who had known him _⌊before_⌋* came to him, and they ate bread* with him in his house and showed sympathy to him and comforted him for all the disaster* that Yahweh had brought upon him. Then* each one gave to him one piece of money, and each one gave to him one ornamental ring of gold.

³³ I have desired no one's silver or gold or clothing!

⁴⁸ after he is sold redemption shall be for him; one of his brothers may redeem him,

⁸ and I said to them: "We ourselves have bought back our brothers the Jews who were sold to the nations as we were able. But now you yourselves have sold your brothers so they may be sold to us!" They were silent and could not find a word to say.

²⁰ In famine he will redeem you from death, and in war from the _⌊power of_⌋* the sword.

⁷ Surely a man cannot redeem a brother. He cannot give to God his ransom ⁸ (since* the redemption price for their life is costly and it always fails),

¹⁵ Surely God will ransom my life from the _⌊power_⌋* of Sheol, because he will receive me. Selah

² Let the redeemed of Yahweh declare* it, those whom he has redeemed from the hand of the enemy

²¹ "And I will deliver you from the hand of the wicked, and I will redeem you from the hand of the tyrant."

²⁷ "Look, we have searched this out—it is true; hear it and know it _⌊yourself_⌋."*

² I will say to God, 'You should not condemn me; let me know why you contend against me.

¹¹ "Look, I waited for your* words; I listened for your* insight, until you searched out _⌊what to say_⌋.*

¹⁵ "They are dismayed; they no longer answer; _⌊they have nothing to say_⌋.* ¹⁶ And I have waited because they do not speak, because they stand there and no longer answer.

¹ "But now, please hear my speeches,* Job, and hear* all my words.

³² teach me yourself _⌊what I cannot see_⌋;* if I have done wrong, I will not repeat it'?

¹² Who can perceive his errors? Acquit me from hidden faults.

I said, "I will guard my ways _⌊that I may not sin_⌋* with my tongue. I will keep a muzzle over my mouth as long as the wicked are before me." ² I was mute with silence. I was silent even from saying good things, and my pain was stirred up.

⁹ Give to a wise one and he will become more wise; _⌊teach_⌋* a righteous one and he will increase learning.

¹² A ring of gold and an ornament of fine gold is a rebuke of the wise to the ear of a listener.

¹⁹ Understand this, my dear brothers: every person must be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger,

² For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect individual,* able to hold in check his whole body also.

⁴ Your words have raised up the one who stumbles, and you have strengthened knees giving way.

⁵ _⌊O that_⌋* you* would keep completely silent, and that it would become wisdom for you.*

³ Is there a limit to windy words? What provokes you that you answer? ⁴ I myself* also could talk as you, if _⌊you were in my place_⌋;* I could join against you with words, and I could shake at you with my head. ⁵ I could* encourage you with my mouth, and the solace of my lips would* ease the pain.

³⁴ So* how will you comfort me with emptiness, when* fraud is left in your answers?"

²⁵ "And if it is not so, then who can prove me a liar and reduce my word to nothing?"

³ and _⌊he became angry_⌋* at his three friends because they had not found an answer, and they had declared Job guilty.

¹⁸ There is one who speaks rashly, like the thrust of a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

²¹ The wise of heart* is called perceptive, but he who is pleasant of lips will increase persuasiveness. ²² A fountain of life is wisdom for its owner,* but the instruction* of fools is folly. ²³ The heart* of the wise will make his mouth judicious, and upon his lips, it* will add persuasiveness. ²⁴ Pleasant sayings are a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and healing to the bones.

²¹ Death and life are in the _⌊power_⌋* of the tongue, and those who love her* will eat of her fruit.

Why did I not come forth from the womb and expire? ¹² Why did the knees receive me and the breasts, that I could suck? ¹³ For now I would lie down, and I would be at peace; I would be asleep; then _⌊I would be at rest_⌋* ¹⁴ with kings and counselors of the earth, who _⌊rebuild_⌋ * ruins for themselves, ¹⁵ or with high officials _⌊who have gold_⌋,* who fill up their houses with silver. ¹⁶ Or why was I not hidden like a miscarriage, like infants who did not see the light? ¹⁷ There the wicked cease from troubling, and there the _⌊weary_⌋* are at rest; ¹⁸ the prisoners are at ease together; they do not hear the oppressor's voice. ¹⁹ The small and the great are there, and the slave is free from his masters.* ²⁰ "Why does he* give light to one in misery and life to those bitter of soul, ²¹ who wait for death, but* _⌊it does not come_⌋,* and search* for it more than for treasures, ²² who rejoice _⌊exceedingly_⌋,* and they are glad when they find the grave? ²³ Why does he* give light to a man whose way is hidden, and God has fenced him in all around? ²⁴ For* my sighing comes _⌊before_⌋* my bread,* and my groanings gush forth like water ²⁵ because the dread that I _⌊feel_⌋* has come upon me, and what I feared befalls me. ²⁶ I am not at ease, and I am not at peace, and I do not have rest, thus* turmoil has come."

³ Look, you have instructed many, and you have strengthened weak hands. ⁴ Your words have raised up the one who stumbles, and you have strengthened knees giving way.

⁴ for the arrows of Shaddai are in me; my spirit drinks their poison; the terrors of God are arrayed against me.

⁹ that* God would decide that* he would crush me, that he would let loose his hand and _⌊kill me_⌋.*

² "_⌊How long_⌋* will you say these things, and the words of your mouth be a mighty wind?

¹ "My inner self* loathes my life; _⌊I want to give vent to my complaint_⌋;* I want to speak out of the bitterness of my inner self.*

³ for the ear tests words, and the palate tastes _⌊food_⌋.* ⁴ Let us choose justice for ourselves; let us determine among ourselves what is good— ⁵ for Job has said, 'I am righteous, but God has taken away my justice. ⁶ Should I lie concerning my justice? Though I am without transgression, my wound caused by an arrow is incurable.' ⁷ What man is like Job, who drinks scorn like water? ⁸ And he goes on the road in company with instigators of mischief, and walks with men of wickedness. ⁹ Indeed, he says, 'A man does not profit when he takes delight in God.'

² "Who is this darkening counsel by words without knowledge?

⁵ Once I have spoken, and I will not answer; even* twice, but* I will not proceed."

⁸ "Indeed, would you annul my justice? Would you condemn me, so that you might be righteous?

³ 'Who is this darkening counsel without knowledge?' Therefore I uttered, but* I did not understand; _⌊things too wonderful for me_⌋,* but I did not know.

⁷ _⌊And then_⌋* after Yahweh spoke these words to Job, Yahweh said to Eliphaz the Temanite, "_⌊My wrath has been kindled_⌋* against you* and against the two of your friends, for you* have not spoken to me what is right as my servant Job has.

¹ Ephraim herds the wind* and is pursuing the east wind all day long; he multiplies deception and violence and he* _⌊makes a treaty with Assyria_⌋,* and oil is brought to Egypt.

³⁷ For by your words you will be vindicated, and by your words you will be condemned."

¹⁴ so that we may no longer be infants, tossed about by waves and carried about by every wind of teaching, by the trickery of people, by craftiness with reference to the scheming of deceit.

²² " 'You will not afflict any widow or orphan. ²³ If you indeed afflict him, yes, if he cries out at all to me, I will certainly hear his cry of distress. ²⁴ And _⌊I will become angry_⌋,* and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives will be widows and your children orphans.

⁹ You have sent widows away empty-handed, and the arms of orphans were crushed.

³ They drive away the donkey of orphans; they take the widow's ox as a pledge.

⁹ "They* snatch the orphan from the breast, and they take a pledge against the needy.*

¹² because I saved the needy who cried for help, and I saved* the orphan for whom there was no helper.

¹⁷ or I have eaten my morsel _⌊alone_⌋,* and the orphan has not eaten from it

²¹ if I have raised my hand against an orphan because I saw my supporters at the gate,

¹⁵ He makes a pit and digs it out, then falls in the trap he has made.

⁶ They have set a net for my steps; my soul is bowed down. They have dug a pit before me; they have fallen into the midst of it. Selah

³ Judge on behalf of the helpless and the orphan; provide justice to the afflicted and the poor.

¹⁰ Do not remove an ancient boundary marker, and on the fields of orphans do not encroach; ¹¹ For their redeemer is strong, he himself will plead their cause against you.

²⁰ Should good be repaid in place of evil? Yet they have dug a pit for me. Remember my standing _⌊before you_⌋* to speak good for them, to avert your wrath from them.

²² Let a cry for help be heard from their houses when you suddenly bring upon them the raiding band, for they have dug a pit to catch me, and they have fixed secretly a trap for my feet.

⁷ They have treated father and mother with contempt in you; _⌊they violated_⌋* the alien with* extortion; in the midst of you they mistreated the orphan and widow.

³ For my people they cast lots,* and _⌊they traded_⌋* the male child for the prostitute, and the female child they sold for wine and they drank it.

¹⁰ Yet she went into captivity as an exile; her children were dashed to pieces at the head of the streets; they cast lots for all of her nobles; all of her dignitaries were bound with chains.

⁵ "Then I will approach you for judgment, and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers and against the adulterers, and against those who swear _⌊falsely_⌋,* and against the oppressors of the hired worker with his wages, the widow and the orphan, and _⌊the abusers of_⌋* the alien,* and yet do not fear me," says Yahweh of hosts.

²⁷ Pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our* God and Father is this: to look after orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained by the world.

³ And in greediness they will exploit you with false words, whose condemnation from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

³ Should your loose talk put people to silence? _⌊And when you mock, shall no one put you to shame_⌋?*

⁴ my lips surely will not speak falseness, and my tongue surely will not utter deceit.

³ My words declare my heart's uprightness, and my lips sincerely speak _⌊what my lips know_⌋.*

⁴ for truly my words* are not falsehood; one who has perfect knowledge is with you.*

¹⁰ But* _⌊all of you must return_⌋*—_⌊please come_⌋!* But* I shall not find a wise person among you.

¹⁰ But he knows _⌊the way that I take_⌋;* he tests me—I shall come out like gold.

⁴ my lips surely will not speak falseness, and my tongue surely will not utter deceit. ⁵ Far be it from me that _⌊I would say that you* are right_⌋;* until I pass away, I will not put away from me my blamelessness. ⁶ I hold fast to my righteousness, and I will not let it go; my heart will not blame any of my days.

⁵ for Job has said, 'I am righteous, but God has taken away my justice.

⁶ Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes."

¹⁸ You will return and see the difference between the righteous and the wicked, between the one who serves God and the one who does not serve him.

⁶ Can tasteless food be eaten without* salt, or is there taste in the white of a marshmallow plant?

⁸ "Surely you have spoken in my ears, and I have heard the sound of your words:* ⁹ 'I am clean, without transgression; I am pure, and there is no guilt in me. ¹⁰ Look, he finds fault against me; he reckons me as his enemy; ¹¹ he puts my feet in the block; he watches all my paths.' ¹² "Look, in this you are not right—I will answer you: Indeed, God is greater than a human being.

³ 'Who is this darkening counsel without knowledge?' Therefore I uttered, but* I did not understand; _⌊things too wonderful for me_⌋,* but I did not know. ⁴ 'Hear and I will speak; I will question you, then* inform me.' ⁵ By the ear's hearing I heard of you, but* now my eye has seen you. ⁶ Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes."

¹⁴ But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have trained their faculties for the distinguishing of both good and evil.
