¹ Then* Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said, ² "If someone would test a word with you, would you be offended? But* who can refrain from speaking? ³ Look, you have instructed many, and you have strengthened weak hands. ⁴ Your words have raised up the one who stumbles, and you have strengthened knees giving way. ⁵ But now it has come to you, and you are worn out; it touches you, and you are horrified. ⁶ Is not your fear in God your confidence? Is not your hope even* the integrity of your ways? ⁷ "_⌊Think_⌋* now, who has perished who is innocent? Or* where are the upright destroyed? ⁸ Just as I have seen, plowers of mischief and sowers of trouble will reap it. ⁹ By* the breath of God they perish, and by* the blast of his anger they come to an end. ¹⁰ The roar of the lion and the voice of a lion in its prime, and the teeth of the young lions are broken. ¹¹ The lion is perishing without* prey, and the lion's whelps are scattered. ¹² "And a word came stealing to me, and my ear received the whisper from it. ¹³ Amid troubling thoughts from night visions, at the falling of deep sleep on men, ¹⁴ dread met me, and trembling, and it made many of my bones shake. ¹⁵ And a spirit glided before my face; the hair of my flesh* bristled. ¹⁶ It stood still, but* I could not recognize its appearance; a form was _⌊before_⌋* my eyes; there was a hush, and I heard a voice: ¹⁷ 'Can a human being be more righteous than God, or can a man be more pure than his Maker? ¹⁸ Look, he does not trust in his servants and he charges his angels with error. ¹⁹ How much more dwellers in clay houses, whose foundation is in the dust? They are crushed like a moth. ²⁰ _⌊Between morning and evening_⌋* they are destroyed; without anyone regarding it they perish forever. ²¹ Is not their tent cord pulled up within them? They die, but* not in* wisdom.'

¹¹ Thus* Job's three friends heard of this calamity that had come upon him. So* each set out from his own place: Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite. And they met* together to come to console him and to comfort him.

¹ _⌊Afterward_⌋* Job opened his mouth and cursed* his day. ² Thus* Job _⌊spoke up_⌋* and said,

¹ Then* Job answered and said,

¹ Then* Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

¹ Then* Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

⁹ So* Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went and did just as Yahweh had told them, and _⌊Yahweh accepted Job's prayer_⌋.*

¹⁸ for I am full of words;* _⌊the spirit within me_⌋* urges me. ¹⁹ "Look, my internal organs are like unopened wine, like new wineskins it* is ready to burst open. ²⁰ Let me speak _⌊that I may find relief_⌋;* let me open my lips, and let me answer.

¹¹ But I am full with the wrath of Yahweh, I struggle to hold it* in. Pour it out on the children* in the street, and on the assemblies* of young men at the same time. For even husband with wife will get trapped, the old with him who is full of days.

⁹ But if I say, "I will not mention him and I will no longer speak in his name," then it becomes in my heart like a fire burning, locked up in my bones, and I struggle to contain it,* and I am not able.

²⁰ For we are not able to refrain from speaking about the things that we have seen and heard."

⁴ For out of great distress and anguish of heart I wrote to you through many tears, not so that you may be caused to be sad, but so that you may know the love that I have especially for you. ⁵ But if anyone has caused sorrow, he has not caused me sorrow, but _⌊to some degree_⌋*—_⌊in order not to say too much_⌋*—to all of you. ⁶ This punishment by the majority is sufficient for such a person.

⁸ For if indeed I grieved you by my letter, I do not regret it. Even if I did regret it (I see* that that letter grieved you, even though for _⌊a short time_⌋*), ⁹ now I rejoice, not that you were grieved, but that you were grieved to repentance. For you were grieved according to the will of God, so that you suffered loss in no way through us. ¹⁰ For grief according to the will of God brings about a repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted, but worldly grief brings about death.

¹⁹ For I have chosen* him, that he will command his children and his household after him that they will keep the way of Yahweh, to do righteousness and justice, so that Yahweh may bring upon Abraham that which he said to him."

²⁸ Now instruct Joshua and support him and encourage him because he himself* will cross over before this people and enable them to inherit the land that you will see.'

²² With joy they celebrated the festival of unleavened bread for seven days, because Yahweh had made them joyful and had turned the heart of the king of Assyria toward them in order to help them with the work of their hands on the house of the God of Israel.

⁵ I could* encourage you with my mouth, and the solace of my lips would* ease the pain.

²¹ Lips of righteousness feed many, but fools _⌊die for lack of sense_⌋.*

⁷ The lips of the wise will spread knowledge, but the heart* of fools, not so.

²¹ The wise of heart* is called perceptive, but he who is pleasant of lips will increase persuasiveness.

³ Strengthen the weak hands and make the staggering knees firm.

⁴ The Lord Yahweh has given me the tongue of a pupil, to know how to help the weary with a word. He awakens _⌊morning by morning_⌋,* awakens an ear for me to listen as do the pupils.

²² Because you disheartened the heart of the righteous by deception, and I have not* caused him pain, and strengthened the hands of the wicked so that he did not turn* from his wicked way to save his life.

³² but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail. And you, when* once you have turned back,* strengthen your brothers."

⁴³ And an angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him.

²⁹ _⌊No rotten word must proceed_⌋* from your mouth, but only something good for the building up of the need, in order that it may give grace to those who hear,

⁶ Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how it is necessary for you to answer each one.

¹² Therefore strengthen your slackened hands and your weakened knees,

¹⁴ Yahweh upholds all who are falling, and raises up all who are bowed down.

¹⁸ There is one who speaks rashly, like the thrust of a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

²³ The heart* of the wise will make his mouth judicious, and upon his lips, it* will add persuasiveness. ²⁴ Pleasant sayings are a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and healing to the bones.

³ Strengthen the weak hands and make the staggering knees firm. ⁴ Say to those who are hasty of heart,
"Be strong; you must not fear! Look! your God will come with vengeance, with _⌊divine retribution_⌋.* He _⌊is the one who_⌋* will come and save you."

⁶ Then his face changed and his thoughts terrified him, and _⌊his hip joints gave way_⌋* and _⌊his knees knocked together_⌋.*

⁷ So then, you should rather forgive and comfort him, lest somehow this person should be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.

⁶ But God, who comforts the humble, comforted us by the coming of Titus,

¹⁴ And we urge you, brothers, admonish the disorderly, console the discouraged, help the sick, be patient toward all people.

¹¹ But,* on the other hand, stretch out* your hand and touch _⌊all that belongs to him_⌋* and see _⌊whether_⌋* he will _⌊curse_⌋* you to your face."

⁵ But stretch out* your hand and touch his bones and his flesh, and see _⌊whether_⌋* he will _⌊curse_⌋* you to your face."*

²⁵ because the dread that I _⌊feel_⌋* has come upon me, and what I feared befalls me. ²⁶ I am not at ease, and I am not at peace, and I do not have rest, thus* turmoil has come."

¹⁴ "Loyal love* should come for the afflicted from his friend, even if* he forsakes the fear of Shaddai.

²¹ "Pity me, pity me, you my friends, for God's hand has touched me.

¹⁰ If you faint on the day of adversity, little is your strength.

¹ Because of this, since we* have this ministry, just as we have been shown mercy, we do not lose heart,

¹⁶ Therefore we do not lose heart, but even if our outer person is being destroyed, yet our inner person is being renewed day after day.

³ For consider the one who endured such hostility by sinners against himself,* so that you will not grow weary in your souls and give up.

⁵ And have you completely forgotten the exhortation which instructs you as sons?
"My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, or give up when you are corrected by him.

³ "O Yahweh, please remember how I went about before you in faithfulness and with a whole heart, and remember the good that I have done in your eyes." Then Hezekiah _⌊wept bitterly_⌋.*

¹ There was a man in the land of Uz whose* name was Job. That* man was blameless and upright and God-fearing and turning away from evil.

⁸ So* Yahweh said to Satan,* "Have you _⌊considered_⌋* my servant Job? Indeed,* there is no one like him on the earth—a blameless man and upright and God-fearing and turning away from evil." ⁹ Then* Satan* answered Yahweh and said, "Does Job fear God for nothing? ¹⁰ Have you* not put a fence around him and his household and around _⌊all that belongs to him_⌋* _⌊on every side_⌋?* You have blessed the work of his hands, and his livestock* has increased in the land.

¹⁵ Look,* though he kill me, I will hope in* him; however, I will defend my ways _⌊before him_⌋.*

¹⁷ _⌊although_⌋* violence is not on my hands, and my prayer is pure.

¹⁵ where* then is my hope? And _⌊who will see my hope_⌋?*

¹¹ My foot has held on to his steps; I have kept his way, and I have not turned aside. ¹² From the commandment of his lips, indeed* I have not departed; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily food.

⁵ Far be it from me that _⌊I would say that you* are right_⌋;* until I pass away, I will not put away from me my blamelessness. ⁶ I hold fast to my righteousness, and I will not let it go; my heart will not blame any of my days.

¹² because I saved the needy who cried for help, and I saved* the orphan for whom there was no helper. ¹³ The blessing of the wretched came upon me, and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; my justice was like a robe and a headband. ¹⁵ "I was eyes to the blind, and I was feet to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the poor, and I investigated _⌊the stranger's_⌋* legal dispute. ¹⁷ And I broke the evil one's jaw bones, and I made his prey drop from his teeth.

¹ "I made a covenant with my eyes, so* how could I look closely upon a virgin? ² And what is the portion of God from above or* the heritage of Shaddai from on high? ³ Is not disaster for the evil one and ruin for the workers of mischief? ⁴ Does he not see my ways and count all my steps? ⁵ "If I have walked with falseness, and my foot has hastened to deceit, ⁶ let him weigh me in the balance of justice, and let God know my blamelessness. ⁷ If my steps have turned aside from the way, and my heart has walked after my eyes, and my hand has clung to a spot, ⁸ let me sow, and let another eat, and let my crops be rooted out. ⁹ "If my heart has been enticed by a woman, and at my neighbor's doorway I have lain in wait, ¹⁰ let my wife grind for another, and let other men kneel over her, ¹¹ for that is a shameful act, and that is _⌊a criminal offense_⌋.* ¹² Indeed, that is a fire that will consume up to Abaddon, and it would uproot all my crop. ¹³ "If I have rejected my male or* female slave's case when their complaint was against me, ¹⁴ then* what shall I do when God rises up? And when he enquires, how shall I answer him? ¹⁵ Did not he who made me in the womb make them? And did not one fashion us in the womb? ¹⁶ "If I have withheld the desire of the poor from them, or* I have caused the widow's eyes to fail, ¹⁷ or I have eaten my morsel _⌊alone_⌋,* and the orphan has not eaten from it ¹⁸ (for from my childhood he* _⌊grew up with_⌋* me like a father, and from my mother's womb I guided her*), ¹⁹ if I have seen the one who perishes because of no clothing or* that there is no covering for the poor, ²⁰ if his loins have not blessed me, or* by means of my sheep's fleece he has warmed himself, ²¹ if I have raised my hand against an orphan because I saw my supporters at the gate, ²² then let my shoulder blade fall from my shoulder, and let my arm be broken from its socket. ²³ Indeed, the disaster from God was a dread for me, and _⌊I was powerless_⌋* because of his majesty. ²⁴ "If I have made gold my trust, or* I have called fine gold my security, ²⁵ if I have rejoiced because my wealth was great or* because my hand found a fortune, ²⁶ if I looked at the sun when it shone or* at the moon moving in splendor, ²⁷ and _⌊I was secretly enticed_⌋,* and _⌊my hand threw them a kiss_⌋,* ²⁸ this also is an iniquity to be judged, for I have deceived God above. ²⁹ "If I have rejoiced at the ruin of the one who hated me or* have exulted when evil overtook him— ³⁰ no,* I have not allowed my mouth to sin, to ask his life with a curse. ³¹ _⌊Have the people of my tent not said_⌋,* '_⌊O that_⌋* someone* had not been satisfied with his meat'? ³² An alien has not lodged in the street; I have opened my door to the traveler. ³³ _⌊Have I concealed_⌋* my transgressions as other human beings to hide my iniquity in my bosom ³⁴ because I dreaded the great multitude, and the contempt of clans terrified me, so that I kept quiet, I did not go out of the doorway? ³⁵ _⌊O that_⌋* _⌊I had_⌋* someone hearing me! Here is my signature; let Shaddai answer me! _⌊As for_⌋* the written communication that _⌊my adversary_⌋* has written, ³⁶ I would _⌊surely_⌋* carry it on my shoulder; I would bind it on me like a crown. ³⁷ I would give him an account of my steps; I would approach him like a noble. ³⁸ If my land has cried out against me, and its furrows have wept together, ³⁹ if I have eaten its yield without payment, or* I have caused the breath of its owners to die, ⁴⁰ let thorns grow in place of wheat and noxious weeds in place of barley." The words of Job are ended.

²⁶ Yahweh will be _⌊your confidence_⌋* and guard your foot from capture.

²⁶ In the fear of Yahweh, there is confidence of strength, and for his children, there will be refuge.

¹³ Therefore, _⌊when you have prepared your minds for action_⌋* by* being self-controlled, put your hope completely in the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

¹⁷ And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one's work, conduct yourselves with fear during the time of your temporary residence,

²⁰ "Look, God will not reject the blameless, and he will not uphold the hand of evildoers.

²² It is all one; therefore I say, 'He destroys both the blameless and the wicked.' ²³ When the whip* kills suddenly, he mocks at the despair of the innocent.

⁷ He does not withdraw his eyes from the righteous, but* he sets them forever with kings on the throne, and they are exalted.

²⁵ I was a youth, but I am now old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children _⌊begging for_⌋* bread.

¹⁵ I have seen all these things in my vain life: Sometimes a righteous man perishes in spite of his righteousness, and sometimes a wicked man lives a long life in spite of his evil.

¹ So all this I laid to my heart, and I concluded* that the righteous and the wise, as well as their deeds, are in the hand of God. So no one knows anything that will come to them, whether it will be love or hatred. ² The same fate comes to everyone:
to the righteous and to the wicked, to the good and to the wicked,* to the clean and to the unclean, to those who sacrifice and to those who do not sacrifice. As with the good man, so also to the sinner; as with those who swear an oath, so also those who fear oaths.

⁴ And when the local people saw the creature hanging from his hand, they began saying* to one another, "Doubtless this man is a murderer whom, although he* was rescued from the sea, Justice* has not permitted to live!"

⁹ then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials and to reserve the unrighteous to be punished at* the day of judgment,

³⁵ They conceive trouble and bring forth mischief, and their womb prepares deceit."

¹⁴ See, he* travails with* evil. He is pregnant with trouble, and he gives birth to deception. ¹⁵ He makes a pit and digs it out, then falls in the trap he has made. ¹⁶ His trouble comes back on his head, and his violence comes down on his skull.

⁸ He who sows injustice will reap calamity, and the rod of his anger will fail.

¹⁸ "You obtained this for yourself because of your way and your deeds. This is your doom, for it is bitter, yes, it has reached up to your heart."

⁷ Because they sow the wind, they will reap the whirlwind. The standing grain does not have heads;* it will not yield flour. And if it would yield, strangers would devour it.

¹² Sow for yourselves righteousness; _⌊reap loyal love_⌋.* Break up for yourself fallow ground; it is time to seek Yahweh so he will come and rain righteousness upon you. ¹³ You have plowed wickedness, you have reaped injustice, you have eaten the fruit of lies,* because you have trusted in your strength, in the multitude of your warriors.

⁶ Now the point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.

⁷ Do not be deceived: God is not to be mocked, for whatever a person sows, this he will also reap, ⁸ because the one who sows to his own flesh will reap corruption from the flesh, but the one who sows to the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit.

⁸ And by the breath of your nostrils waters were piled up; waves stood like a heap; deep waters in the middle of the sea congealed.

¹⁰ You blew with your breath; the sea covered them; they dropped like lead in the mighty waters.

⁷ Look, I am putting in him a spirit. He will hear a rumor and return to his land. Then I will cause him to fall by the sword in his land." '"

¹⁹ And behold,* a great wind came from across the desert, and it struck the four corners of the house _⌊so that_⌋* it fell upon the young people, and they died. But I escaped, even I alone, to tell you."

³⁰ "He will not escape from darkness; a flame will dry up his new shoot, and by the wind of his mouth he shall be removed.

¹³ Hide them in the dust together; bind their faces in the grave.

¹⁵ Then the channels of the sea became visible, and the foundations of the world were uncovered by your rebuke, O Yahweh, by the _⌊blast_⌋* of the wind of your nose.

⁴ But he shall judge the poor with righteousness, and he shall decide for the needy of the earth with rectitude. And he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and he shall kill the wicked person with the breath of his lips.

³³ For Topheth has been prepared from yesterday; indeed, it is made ready for the king. He makes its pile of wood deep and wide; he makes fire and wood _⌊abundant_⌋.* The breath of Yahweh burns in it like a stream of sulfur.

⁸ and then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will slay with the breath of his mouth, and wipe out by the appearance of his coming,

¹⁶ Therefore repent! But if you do not, I am coming to you quickly, and I will make war with them with the sword from my mouth.

¹⁵ And* he saves from the sword of* their mouth, _⌊even_⌋* the poor from the hand of the strong.

¹⁷ And I broke the evil one's jaw bones, and I made his prey drop from his teeth.

⁷ Rise up, O Yahweh; deliver me, O my God; for you strike all my enemies on the cheek. The teeth of the wicked you break.

⁴ My soul is among lions. I lie down among those who devour— the children* of humankind whose teeth are spears and arrows and whose tongues are sharp swords.

⁶ O God, break their teeth in their mouth. Break off the fangs of the young lions, O Yahweh.

¹⁴ There is a generation whose teeth are swords, and its jawbones, knives, in order to devour the poor from the earth* and the needy from humankind.

⁹ Judah is a lion's cub. From the prey, my son, you have gone up. He bowed down; he crouched like a lion and as a lioness. Who shall rouse him?

²⁴ Look! the people will rise like the lion; he raises himself and will not lie down until he eats the prey and drinks the blood of the slain."

⁹ He crouches, he lies down like a lion, and like a lioness, who will rouse him? They who bless you will be blessed, and they who curse you will be cursed."

³ Does God pervert justice, _⌊or_⌋* Shaddai pervert righteousness? ⁴ If your children sinned against him, then* he sent them into the _⌊power_⌋* of their transgression.

¹⁴ If their children multiply, it is for the sword, and his offspring _⌊do not have enough to eat_⌋.* ¹⁵ Their* survivors are buried through* the plague, and their* widows do not weep.

³⁹ "Can you hunt prey for the lion? And can you satisfy the hunger of strong lions

² Or else he will tear me apart like a lion, ripping to pieces, with none to deliver.

¹⁰ The young lions are in want and suffer hunger, but those who seek Yahweh will not lack for any good thing.

⁷ A lion has gone up from his thicket, and a destroyer of nations has set out. He has gone out from his place to make your land as a horror, your cities will go to ruin _⌊without_⌋* inhabitant.

¹⁰ They will go after Yahweh; he roars like a lion. When he roars, his children will come trembling from the sea.*

¹⁷ But the Lord helped me and strengthened me, so that through me the proclamation might be fulfilled and all the Gentiles might hear, and he rescued me from the lion's mouth.

¹⁴ Look, these are the outer fringes of his ways, and _⌊how faint is the word_⌋* that we hear of him! But* who can understand the thunder of his power?"

¹¹ Once God has spoken; twice I have heard this: that strength belongs to God.

¹² For now we see through a mirror _⌊indirectly_⌋*, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know completely, just as I have also been completely known.

²¹ And Yahweh God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man.* While* he slept, he took one of his ribs, and closed up _⌊the flesh where it had been_⌋.*

¹² And it happened, as the sun _⌊went down_⌋,* then a deep sleep fell upon Abram and, behold, a great terrifying darkness fell upon him.

³ And God came to Abimelech in a dream at night. And he said to him, "Look, you are a dead man on account of the woman you have taken. For she is _⌊a married woman_⌋."*

¹² And he dreamed, and behold, a stairway was set on the earth, and its top touched the heavens. And behold, angels of God were going up and going down on it.

²⁴ And God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream at night and said to him, "_⌊Take care_⌋* that you not speak with Jacob, whether good or evil."

² And God spoke to Israel in visions of the night and said, "Jacob, Jacob." And he said, "Here I am."

⁶ and he said,
"Please hear my words: If there is a prophet among you, I, Yahweh, will make myself known to him in a vision. I will speak to him in a dream.*

¹⁹ And now please, _⌊you also stay here_⌋* the night, and _⌊let me find out_⌋* again what Yahweh will say with me." ²⁰ And God came to Balaam at night, and he said to him, "If the men have come to call you, get up and go with them; but only the word that I will speak to you, you will do."

¹⁴ Indeed, God speaks in one way, even* in two,* yet someone does not perceive it. ¹⁵ "In a dream, a vision of the night, when a deep sleep falls on men slumbering on their bed, ¹⁶ then he opens the ear of men, and _⌊he frightens them with a warning_⌋*

¹⁹ Then in a vision of the night the mystery was revealed to Daniel; then Daniel blessed the God of heaven.

²⁸ But there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and he has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what it is that will be at the end of days. This is your dream and the visions of your head on your bed. ²⁹ "As for you, king,* your thoughts on your bed _⌊turned to_⌋* what it was that would be _⌊in the future_⌋,* and the revealer of mysteries has made known to you what that would be.

⁵ And I saw a dream and a revelation on my bed and it frightened me, and the visions of my head terrified me.

¹⁸ And _⌊when he spoke_⌋* with me I fell into a trance with my face to the ground, and he touched me and made me stand on by feet.

⁹ And I heard the sound of his words, and _⌊when I heard_⌋* the sound of his words I myself began falling into a trance on my face, _⌊with my face to the ground_⌋.*

¹⁴ then* you terrify me with dreams,* and with visions you terrify* me.

¹⁹ "And he is reproved with pain on his bed, even* with the strife of his bones continually,

¹²⁰ My flesh trembles for fear of you, and I am afraid of your judgments.

⁵ And I said, "Woe to me! For I am destroyed!* For I am a man _⌊of unclean lips_⌋,* and I am living among* a people _⌊of unclean lips_⌋,* for my eyes have seen the king, Yahweh of hosts!"

¹¹ And he said to me, "Daniel, a man beloved, pay attention to the words that I am speaking to you and _⌊stand upright where you are_⌋,* for I have now been sent to you." And _⌊while he was speaking_⌋* with me this word,* I stood up trembling.

¹⁶ I hear and my stomach shakes; my lips quiver at the sound; infection enters my bones; that which is beneath me trembles; I wait quietly for the day of trouble to come upon the people attacking us.

¹² And Zechariah was terrified when he* saw the angel,* and fear fell upon him.

²⁹ But she was greatly perplexed at the statement, and was pondering what sort of greeting this might be.

¹⁷ And when I saw him, I fell at his feet like a dead person, and he placed his right hand on me, saying, "Do not be afraid! I am the first and the last,

⁴ who makes his messengers the winds, his attendants a flame of fire.

⁸ and they will be dismayed. Pangs and labor pains will seize them; they will tremble like a woman giving birth. _⌊They will stare at one another_⌋,* _⌊their faces flushing_⌋.*

³ Therefore my loins are filled with anguish; pangs have seized me, like the pangs of a woman giving birth. I am _⌊too bent to hear_⌋,* I am _⌊too dismayed to see_⌋.* ⁴ My _⌊mind_⌋* staggers; fear terrifies me; the twilight _⌊I desired_⌋* _⌊brought_⌋* me fear.

²⁶ But the disciples, when they* saw him walking on the sea, were terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" and they cried out in fear.

³⁷ But they were startled and became terrified, and* thought they had seen a ghost. ³⁸ And he said to them, "Why are you frightened? And for what reason do doubts arise in your hearts? ³⁹ Look at my hands and my feet, that I am I myself! Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones, as _⌊you see that I have_⌋."*

⁷ And concerning the angels he says,
"The one who makes his angels winds, and his servants a flame of fire,"*

¹⁴ Are they not all spirits engaged in special service, sent on assignment for the sake of those who are going to inherit salvation?

¹² After the earthquake was a fire, but Yahweh was not in the fire. After the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper.

²⁵ Far be it from you to do such a thing as this, to kill the righteous with the wicked, that* the righteous would be as the wicked! Far be it from you! Will not the Judge of all the earth do justice?"

³ Does God pervert justice, _⌊or_⌋* Shaddai pervert righteousness?

² "Truly I know that it is so, but* how can a human being be just before God?

³⁰ If I wash myself with soap,* and I cleanse my hands with lye, ³¹ then you plunge me into the slime pit, and my clothes abhor me.

⁴ "Who can bring a clean thing from an unclean thing? No one!*

¹⁴ "What is a human being, that he can be clean, or* that one born of a woman can be righteous?

⁴ "Indeed,* how can a human being be righteous before God? And how will he who is born of a woman be pure?

² "Do you think this is justice when you say, '_⌊I am right_⌋* before God'?

¹⁰ But* no one says, 'Where is God my Maker, who gives songs in the night,

⁸ "Indeed, would you annul my justice? Would you condemn me, so that you might be righteous?

² And do not enter into judgment with your servant, because no one alive is righteous before you.

¹⁷ Yahweh is righteous in all his ways, and loyal in all his works.

²⁰ Surely there is no one righteous on the earth who continually does good and never sins.

¹ You will be in the right, O Yahweh, when I complain to you. Even so, let me speak my claims with you. Why does the way of the wicked succeed? All those who deal treacherously with treachery are at ease.

⁹ The heart is deceitful more than anything else, and it is disastrous. Who can understand it?

²⁰ And he said, "What comes out of a person, that defiles a person. ²¹ For from within, from the heart of people, come evil plans, sexual immoralities, thefts, murders, ²² adulteries, acts of greed, malicious deeds, deceit, licentiousness, _⌊envy_⌋,* abusive speech, pride, foolishness. ²³ All these evil things come from within and defile a person."

⁵ But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart, you are storing up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and of the revelation of the righteous judgment of God,

⁴ May it never be! But let God be true but every human being a liar, just as it is written,
"In order that you may be justified in your words, and may prevail when you are* judged."* ⁵ But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? God, who inflicts wrath, is not unjust, is he? (I am speaking according to a human perspective.) ⁶ May it never be! For otherwise, how will God judge the world? ⁷ But if by my lying, the truth of God abounded to his glory, why am I also still condemned as a sinner?

²⁰ On the contrary, O man, who are you who answers back to God? Will what is molded say to the one who molded it, "Why did you make me like this"?*

³³ Oh, the depth of the riches and the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how incomprehensible are his ways!

⁸ And the four living creatures, _⌊each one_⌋* of them, had six wings apiece, full of eyes around and inside, and they do not have rest day and night, saying,
"Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God All-Powerful,* the one who was and the one who is and the one who is coming!"

¹⁵ Look, he does not trust his holy ones, and the heavens are not clean in his eyes. ¹⁶ _⌊How much less_⌋* he who is abominable and corrupt,* a man drinking wickedness like water.

⁵ Look, even the moon _⌊is not bright_⌋,* and the stars are not pure in his sight. ⁶ _⌊How much less_⌋* for a human being who is a maggot, and _⌊a human_⌋* who is a worm?"

²⁰ Bless Yahweh, you his angels, you mighty heroes who do his word by _⌊obeying_⌋* the sound of his word. ²¹ Bless Yahweh, all you his hosts, you his attendants who do his will.

² Seraphs were standing above him. _⌊Each had six wings_⌋:* with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. ³ And the one called to the other and said,
"Holy, holy, holy is Yahweh of hosts! The _⌊whole earth is full of his glory_⌋."*

⁴ For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but held them captive in Tartarus with chains of darkness and handed them over to be kept for judgment,

⁶ And the angels who did not keep to their own domain but deserted their proper dwelling place, he has kept in eternal bonds under deep gloom for the judgment of the great day,

⁷ when* Yahweh God formed the man* of dust from the ground, and he blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.

¹⁹ By the sweat of your brow* you shall eat bread, until your return to the ground. For from it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

²⁷ Then Abraham answered and said, "Look, please, I was bold to speak to my Lord, but I am dust and ashes.

⁹ Please* remember that you made me like clay, but* you turn me into dust again?

¹² Your* maxims are proverbs of ashes; your* defenses are defenses of clay.

²⁸ And he himself *wastes away like something rotten, like a garment that the moth has eaten.

² Like a flower he comes up, and he withers away; and he flees like a* shadow, but* he does not last.

¹⁶ who were snatched away _⌊before their time_⌋,* whose foundation was washed away by a current?

⁶ Look, before God _⌊I am like you_⌋;* I myself was also formed from clay.

¹¹ When with rebukes you chastise a man for sin, you* _⌊consume_⌋* like a moth his delightful things. Surely everyone is a mere vapor.* Selah

⁵ You sweep them away like a flood. They fall asleep.* In the morning they are like grass that sprouts anew. ⁶ In the morning it blossoms and sprouts anew; by evening it withers and dries up. ⁷ For we are brought to an end by your anger, and we hasten off* by your wrath.

¹⁵ As for man, his days are like the grass. As the flower of the field, so he blossoms. ¹⁶ When the wind passes over it, it is no more, and its place knows it no longer.

⁴ His breath departs; he returns to his plot;* on that day his plans perish.

⁷ And the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the breath returns to God who gave it.

⁷ But we have this treasure in earthenware jars, in order that the extraordinary degree of the power may be from God and not from us.

¹ For we know that if our earthly house, the tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made by hands, eternal in the heavens.

²⁴ For
"all flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flower of the grass. The grass withers and the flower falls off,

⁶ Nation was crushed by nation, and city was against city, for God threw them into confusion by all sorts of trouble.

²⁰ He was thirty-two years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. And he departed* with no one's regret. And they buried him in the city of David, but not in the burial sites of the kings.

¹⁴ If a man dies, will he live again? All the days of my compulsory service I will wait, until the coming of my relief.

²⁰ You overpower him forever, and he passes away; you change _⌊his countenance_⌋,* _⌊then_⌋* you send him away.

²² Indeed, after _⌊a few years_⌋* have come, then* I will go the way from which I will not return.

¹⁷ His remembrance perishes from the earth, and there is not a name for him on the street.

⁷ he will perish forever like his dung; those who have seen him will say, 'Where is he?'

³⁶ Then he passed on* and behold, he was not. And I sought him, but he could not be found.

¹³ Look away from me that I may be cheerful, before I depart and I am no more.

⁵ You sweep them away like a flood. They fall asleep.* In the morning they are like grass that sprouts anew. ⁶ In the morning it blossoms and sprouts anew; by evening it withers and dries up.

⁷ When the wicked flourish like grass and all the workers of evil blossom, it is so they can be destroyed forever.

⁷ The memory of righteousness is like a blessing, but the name of the wicked will rot.

¹² My dwelling place is pulled up and removed from me like the tent of my shepherd; I have rolled up my life like a weaver. He cuts me off from the thrum; from day to night you bring me to an end. ¹³ I lie down* until morning; like a lion, so he breaks all my bones; from day to night you bring me to an end.

²² Those who hate you will be clothed with shame, and the tent of the wicked _⌊will be no more_⌋."*

²¹ Surely these are the dwellings of the godless, and this is the dwelling place of him who knows not God."

¹² But* if they do not listen, they perish by the sword, and they pass away without knowledge.

⁵ Look, you have made my days mere handbreadths, and my lifespan as nothing next to you. Surely every person standing firm is complete vanity. Selah

¹⁴ Like sheep they are destined to Sheol; death will shepherd them. But the upright will rule over them in the morning, and their forms will be for Sheol to consume, far from his lofty abode.

²⁰ Humankind in its pomp, but does not understand, is like the beasts that perish.

³ Do not place trust in princes, in a son of humankind with whom there is no deliverance. ⁴ His breath departs; he returns to his plot;* on that day his plans perish.

²² Turn away from humanity, who has breath in its nostrils,* for by* what is it esteemed?

¹⁶ Those who see you will stare at you, they will look closely at you: 'Is this the man who made the earth tremble, who caused kingdoms to shake,

²⁰ But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your life* is demanded from you, and the things which you have prepared—whose will they be?'

²² Now it happened that the poor man died, and he was carried away by the angels to _⌊Abraham's side_⌋.* And the rich man also died and was buried. ²³ And in Hades he lifted up his eyes as he* was in torment and* saw Abraham from a distance, and Lazarus _⌊at his side_⌋.*

¹¹ For the sun rises with its burning heat and dries up the grass, and its flower falls off, and the beauty of its appearance is lost. So also the rich person in his pursuits* will wither away.
