¹ And all the community of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* set out from the desert of Sin for their journeys according to the command of Yahweh, and they camped in Rephidim, and there was no water for the people to drink. ² And the people quarreled with Moses, and they said, "Give us water so that we can drink." And Moses said to them, "Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test Yahweh?" ³ And the people thirsted for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, "Why _⌊ever_⌋* did you bring us up from Egypt to kill me* and my sons and my cattle with thirst?" ⁴ And Moses cried out to Yahweh, saying, "What will I do with this people? A little longer and they will stone me." ⁵ And Yahweh said to Moses, "Go on before the people and take with you some from the elders of Israel, and the staff with which you struck the Nile take in your hand, and go. ⁶ Look, I will be standing before you there on the rock in Horeb, and you will strike the rock, and water will come out from it, and the people will drink."
And Moses did so before the eyes of the elders of Israel. ⁷ And he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah because of the quarrel of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* and because of their testing Yahweh by saying, "Is Yahweh in our midst or not?" ⁸ And Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim. ⁹ And Moses said to Joshua, "Choose men for us, and go out, fight against Amalek tomorrow. I will be standing on the top of the hill, and the staff of God will be in my hand." ¹⁰ And Joshua did as Moses had said to him to fight with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. ¹¹ And* when Moses raised his hand, Israel would prevail, but when he rested his hand, Amalek would prevail. ¹² But the hands of Moses were heavy, and they took a stone and placed it under him, and he sat on it; Aaron and Hur supported his hands, _⌊one on each side_⌋,* and his hands were steady until _⌊sundown_⌋.* ¹³ And Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the _⌊edge of the sword_⌋.* ¹⁴ And Yahweh said to Moses, "Write this as a memorial in the scroll and _⌊recite it in the hearing of_⌋* Joshua, because I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under the heavens." ¹⁵ And Moses built an altar, and he called its name Yahweh Is My Banner. ¹⁶ And he said, "Because a hand was against the throne of Yah,* a war will be for Yahweh with Amalek from generation to generation."

¹ And they set out from Elim, and all the community of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* came to the desert of Sin, which is between Elim _⌊and Sinai_⌋,* in the fifteenth day of the second month of their going out from the land of Egypt.

⁸ And Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim.

² They set out from Rephidim, and they came to the desert of Sinai, and they camped in the desert, and Israel camped there in front of the mountain.

¹² They set out from the desert of Sin and camped at Dophkah. ¹³ They set out from Dophkah and camped at Alush. ¹⁴ They set out from Alush and encamped at Rephidim; and it was there that the people had no water to drink.

¹ When Rachel saw that she could not bear children to Jacob, Rachel envied her sister. And she said to Jacob, "Give me children—if not, I will die!" ² And Jacob _⌊became angry_⌋* with Rachel. And he said, "Am I in the place of God, who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?"

²¹ And they said to them, "May Yahweh look upon you and judge because you have caused our fragrance to stink in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of his servants so as to put a sword into their hand to kill us."

¹¹ And they said to Moses, "Because there are no graves in Egypt? Is that why you have taken us to die in the desert? What is this you have done to us by bringing us out from Egypt! ¹² Isn't this the word we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, 'Leave us alone so that we can serve Egypt!' because serving Egypt is better for us than our dying in the desert."

²⁴ And the people grumbled against Moses, saying, "What shall we drink?"

² And all the community of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* grumbled against Moses and against Aaron in the desert. ³ And the _⌊Israelites_⌋* said to them, "_⌊If only we had died_⌋* by the hand of Yahweh in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots* of meat, when we ate bread _⌊until we were full_⌋,* because you have brought us out to this desert to kill all of this assembly with hunger."

⁷ And he called the name of the place Massah and Meribah because of the quarrel of the _⌊Israelites_⌋* and because of their testing Yahweh by saying, "Is Yahweh in our midst or not?"

⁴ The riff-raff that were in their midst _⌊had a strong desire_⌋;* and the _⌊Israelites_⌋* turned back and also wept, and they said, "Who will feed us meat? ⁵ We remember the fish that we ate in Egypt for nothing, the cucumber, melon, leek, the onions, and the garlic. ⁶ But now _⌊our strength is dried up_⌋;* there is nothing whatsoever except _⌊for the manna before us_⌋."*

² And all the _⌊Israelites_⌋* grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and all the community said to them, "If only we had died in the land of Egypt or in this desert!

²² But because all the men who have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the desert yet tested me these ten times and did not listen to my voice,

² There was no water for the community, and they were gathered before Moses and Aaron. ³ And the people quarreled with Moses and spoke, saying, "If only we died when our brothers were dying _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh! ⁴ Why have you brought the assembly of Yahweh, us and our livestock, into this desert to die here? ⁵ Why have you brought us from Egypt to bring us to this bad place? It is not a place of seed or figs* or vines* or pomegranate trees,* and there is not water to drink."

⁵ The people spoke against God and against Moses, "Why have you brought us from Egypt to die in the desert? There is no food and no water, and our hearts detest this miserable food."

¹⁶ You shall not put Yahweh your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah.

⁶ But the matter _⌊was displeasing to Samuel_⌋* when they said, "Give us a king to judge* us," so Samuel prayed to Yahweh.

¹⁸ And they tested God in their heart by asking food _⌊for their craving_⌋.*

⁴¹ So they again tested God and distressed* the Holy One of Israel.

⁵⁶ But they tested and rebelled against God Most High and did not keep his statutes.

⁹ when your ancestors* tried me. They put me to the test, even though they had seen my work.

¹⁴ And they _⌊craved intensely_⌋* in the wilderness, and tested God in the desert.

¹² But Ahaz said, "I will not ask, and I will not put Yahweh to the test."

¹⁵ And now we are calling the arrogant blessed! Not only do those who do wickedness prosper; they also test God and they escape!'"

⁷ Jesus said to him, "On the other hand it is written, 'You are not to put the Lord your God to the test.'"*

¹ And when* the Pharisees and Sadducees came to test him,* they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. ² So he answered and* said to them, "When* evening comes you say, 'It will be fair weather because the sky is red,' ³ and early in the morning, 'Today it will be stormy weather, because the sky is red and* darkening.' You know how to evaluate correctly the appearance of the sky, but you are not able to evaluate* the signs of the times.

¹² And Jesus answered and* said to him, "It is said, 'You are not to put to the test the Lord your God.'"*

¹² And the younger of them said to his* father, 'Father, give me the share of the property that is coming to me.' So he divided his* assets between them.

⁹ So Peter said to her, "How is it that it was agreed by you two* to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out!"

¹⁰ So now why are you putting God to the test by* placing on the neck of the disciples a yoke that neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear?

⁹ nor put Christ to the test, as some of them tested him, and were destroyed by snakes,

⁹ where your fathers tested me by trial and saw my works

¹⁵ And Yahweh said to Moses, "Why do you cry out to me? Speak to the _⌊Israelites_⌋* so that they set out.*

²⁵ And he cried out to Yahweh, and Yahweh showed him a piece of wood, and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet. There he made a rule and regulation for them, and there he tested them.

¹¹ And Moses said to Yahweh, "Why have you brought trouble to your servant? Why have I not found favor in your eyes, that the burdens of all these people have been placed on me?

¹⁰ And all the community said to stone them with stones, but the glory of Yahweh appeared in the tent of assembly among the _⌊Israelites_⌋.*

¹⁹ And Korah summoned them, the entire community, by the doorway of the tent of assembly, and the glory of Yahweh appeared to all the community.

⁶ And _⌊David was in a very precarious situation_⌋,* for the people spoke of stoning him, for the souls of all the people were bitter, each one over his sons and his daughters. But David strengthened himself in Yahweh his God.

⁵⁹ Then they picked up stones in order to throw them* at him. But Jesus was hidden and went out of the temple courts.*

³¹ Then* the Jews picked up stones again so that they could stone him.

⁵⁰ Did not my hand make all these things?'*

¹⁹ But Jews arrived from Antioch and Iconium, and when they* had won over the crowds and stoned Paul, they dragged him* outside the city, thinking he was dead.

¹⁹ And Yahweh said to Moses, "Say to Aaron, 'Take your staff and stretch your hand out over the waters of Egypt and over their rivers, over their canals, and over their pools and over all of their reservoirs of water, so that they become blood,' and blood will be in all the land of Egypt and in vessels of wood and of stone." ²⁰ And Moses and Aaron did so, as Yahweh had commanded, and he raised the staff and struck the water that was in the Nile before the eyes of Pharaoh and before the eyes of his servants, and all of the water that was in the Nile was changed to blood.

⁸ "Take the staff and summon the community, you and Aaron your brother, and speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will give water. Bring out for them water from the rock, and let the community and their livestock drink." ⁹ So Moses took the staff from _⌊before_⌋* Yahweh just as he command him, ¹⁰ and Moses and Aaron summoned the assembly to the presence of the rock, and he said to them, "Please listen, you rebels; can we bring out water for you from this rock?" ¹¹ Then Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice. And abundant water went out, and the community and their livestock drank.

⁶ And you, son of man,* you must not be afraid of them, and you must not be afraid of their words, because* briers and thorns are with you, and you are sitting among scorpions. You must not be afraid of their words, and you must not be dismayed because of their _⌊looks_⌋,* for they are a rebellious house.

²³ except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me in town after town, saying that bonds and persecutions await me. ²⁴ But I consider my* life as worth _⌊nothing_⌋* to myself, in order to finish my mission and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

¹ And Moses was a shepherd with the flock* of Jethro, his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the west of the desert, and he came to the mountain of God, to Horeb. ² And the angel of Yahweh appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush, and he looked, and there was the bush burning with fire, but the bush was not being consumed. ³ And Moses said, "Let me turn aside and see this great sight. Why does the bush not burn up?" ⁴ And Yahweh saw that he turned aside to see, and God called to him from the midst of the bush, and he said, "Moses, Moses." And he said, "Here I am." ⁵ And he said, "You must not come near to here. Take off your sandals from on your feet, because the place on which you are standing, it is holy ground."

¹⁰ And at the moment of Aaron's speaking to all the community of the _⌊Israelites_⌋,* they turned to the desert, _⌊and just then_⌋* the glory of Yahweh appeared in the cloud.

¹⁵ the one leading you in the great and terrible desert infested with _⌊dangerous_⌋* snakes* and scorpions* and parched ground, where there is* no water, and the one bringing out water for you from flint rock,

¹⁵ You gave them bread from heaven for their starvation, and you caused water to go out from a rock for their thirst. You told them to go in order to take into possession the land that you have sworn by your hand to give to them.

⁴ There is a river whose streams gladden the city of God, the holiest of the dwellings of the Most High.

¹⁵ He caused rocks to split in the wilderness and provided drink abundantly as from the depths. ¹⁶ And he brought streams out of the rock and caused water to flow down like rivers.

²⁰ Yes, he struck the rock and water flowed and streams gushed out, but can he also give food or provide meat for his people?"

⁴¹ He opened the rock and waters flowed; they coursed* through the dry places like a river.

⁸ who turned the rock into a pool of water, flinty stone into a spring of water.

¹⁷ The poor and the needy are seeking water and there is none; their tongue is dried up with thirst. I, Yahweh, will answer them; I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them. ¹⁸ I will open rivers on the barren heights and fountains in the midst of the valleys. I will make the wilderness like a pool of water and the land of dryness like springs of water.

¹⁹ Look! I am about to do a new thing! Now it sprouts! Do you not perceive* it? Indeed, I will _⌊make_⌋* a way in the wilderness, rivers in the desert. ²⁰ The animals of the field will honor me, jackals and daughters of the ostrich, for I give water in the wilderness, rivers in the desert, to give a drink to my chosen people,

²¹ And when he led them through the deserts, they were not thirsty; he made water flow from the rock for them, and he split the rock, and the water gushed out.

¹⁰ Jesus answered and said to her, "If you had known the gift of God and who it is who says to you, 'Give me water* to drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water."

¹⁴ But whoever drinks of this water which I will give to him will never be thirsty for eternity, but the water which I will give to him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life."

³⁷ Now on the last day of the feast—the great day—Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me, and let him drink, ³⁸ the one who believes in me.* Just as the scripture said, 'Out of his belly will flow rivers of living water.'"*

⁴ and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ.

¹⁷ And the Spirit and the bride say, "Come!" And the one who hears, let him say, "Come!" And the one who is thirsty, let him come. The one who wants, let him take the water of life freely.*

² And the people quarreled with Moses, and they said, "Give us water so that we can drink." And Moses said to them, "Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test Yahweh?"

⁹ And he said, "Please, if I have found favor in your eyes, Lord, let my Lord, please, go among us—indeed it is a stiff-necked people—and forgive our iniquity and our sin and _⌊take us as your possession_⌋."*

¹³ Those were the waters of Meribah, where the _⌊Israelites_⌋* quarreled with Yahweh, and he showed himself holy among them.

²⁴ "Let Aaron be gathered to his people; he will not come into the land that I have given to the _⌊Israelites_⌋* because you rebelled against _⌊my word_⌋* at the waters of Meribah.

²² "And also at Taberah and at Massah and at Kibroth Hattaavah you provoked Yahweh to anger.

¹⁷ And _⌊my anger shall flare up against them_⌋* on that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they* shall become as prey, and disasters and troubles shall find* them,* and they* shall say on that day, 'Is it not because our* God is not in our* midst that these disasters have found* us?'*

³¹ Phinehas the priest, son of Eleazar, said to the descendants* of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh, "Today we know that Yahweh is among us, because you have not committed this treachery against Yahweh. Therefore you have rescued the _⌊Israelites_⌋* from the hand of Yahweh."

⁷ In this* trouble you called, and I rescued you. Within the secret place of thunder I answered you; I tested you at the waters of Meribah. Selah

⁸ "Do not harden your heart as at Meribah, as in the day of Massah in the wilderness,

⁶ Inhabitant of Zion, shout out and sing for joy, for the holy one of Israel is great in your midst."

¹¹ Its rulers judge for a bribe; its priests teach for a price; its prophets practice divination for money. But they lean on Yahweh, saying, "Is not Yahweh in our midst? Disaster will not come upon us."

¹⁴ And the Word became flesh and took up residence among us, and we saw his glory, glory as of the one and only from the Father, full of grace and truth.

³⁷ "This is the Moses who said to the sons of Israel, 'God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers.'* ³⁸ This is the one who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and who with our fathers received living oracles to give to us, ³⁹ to whom our fathers were not willing to become obedient, but rejected him* and turned back in their hearts to Egypt,

⁸ do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, in the day of testing in the wilderness, ⁹ where your fathers tested me by trial and saw my works

¹² (Now Timnah was the concubine of Eliphaz, the son of Esau. And she bore Amalek to Eliphaz.) These are the sons of Adah, the wife of Esau.

¹⁶ Korah, Gatam, and Amalek. These are the chiefs of Eliphaz in the land of Edom. These are the sons of Adah.

²⁰ And he looked at Amalek, _⌊uttered_⌋* his oracle, and said, "Amalek is first* of the nations, but his future will be forever ruin."

¹⁷ "Remember what Amalek did to you on the journey when* you went out from Egypt, ¹⁸ that he met you on the journey and attacked you, all those lagging behind you and when you were weary and worn out, and he did not fear God. ¹⁹ _⌊And when_⌋* Yahweh your God gives rest to you from all your enemies from around about you in the land that Yahweh your God is giving to you as an inheritance to take possession of it, you shall blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under the heavens; you shall not forget!"

² Thus says Yahweh of hosts: 'I have observed what Amalek did to Israel, _⌊how he opposed him_⌋* when he went up from Egypt.

¹ _⌊Now_⌋* when David and his men came to Ziklag on the third day, the Amalekites had raided the Negev and Ziklag. When they attacked Ziklag, they burned it with fire.

⁷ Gebal and Ammon and Amalek, Philistia, with the inhabitants of Tyre.

² And Yahweh said to him, "What is this in your hand?" And he said, "A staff."

²⁰ And Moses took his wife and his sons and had them ride on the donkey, and he returned to the land of Egypt, and Moses took the staff of God in his hand.

¹³ And Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the _⌊edge of the sword_⌋.*

¹³ And Moses got up, and Joshua, his assistant, and Moses went up to the mountain of God.

²⁸ And Joshua son of Nun, the assistant of Moses from time of his youth, answered, "Moses, my lord, stop them."

¹⁶ These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to explore the land. And Moses called Hoshea son of Nun Joshua.

³ Moses spoke to the people, saying, "Arm yourself from among your men for the battle, so that they will _⌊go_⌋* against Midian to mete out the vengeance of Yahweh on Midian. ⁴ A thousand from each tribe of every tribe of Israel you will send to battle."

⁴⁴ And Moses came, and he spoke* all the words of this song in the ears of the people; that is, he and Joshua the son of Nun.

⁴⁵ and which, after* receiving it* in turn, our fathers brought in with Joshua _⌊when they dispossessed the_⌋* nations that God drove out from the presence of our fathers, until the days of David,

⁸ For if Joshua had caused them to rest, he would not have spoken about another day after these things.

¹² But the hands of Moses were heavy, and they took a stone and placed it under him, and he sat on it; Aaron and Hur supported his hands, _⌊one on each side_⌋,* and his hands were steady until _⌊sundown_⌋.*

¹⁴ And to the elders he said, "Wait for us here until we return to you. And look, Aaron and Hur are with you. Whoever _⌊has a dispute_⌋* will bring it to you."

² "See, I have called by name* Bezalel the son of Uri the son of Hur, from the tribe of Judah.

¹⁵ Just as Yahweh commanded Moses his servant, so Moses commanded Joshua, and Joshua did; he left nothing undone that Yahweh had commanded Moses.

²⁰ teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you, and behold, I am with you all the days until the end of the age."

⁵ His mother said to the servants, "Whatever he says to you, do it!"*

¹⁴ You are my friends if you do what I command you.

⁹ Then my enemies will turn back _⌊when_⌋* I call.* This I know because* God is for me.

¹ And he told them a parable to show that they must always pray and not be discouraged,

⁸ Therefore I want the men in every place to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger and dispute.

¹⁶ Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous person accomplishes much.

³ And draw the spear and javelin to meet those who pursue me. Say to my soul, "I am your salvation."

³ Strengthen the weak hands and make the staggering knees firm.

⁴⁰ And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, "So, were you not able to stay awake with me one hour? ⁴¹ Stay awake and pray that you will not enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak!" ⁴² Again for the second time he went away and* prayed, saying, "My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will must be done." ⁴³ And he came again and* found them sleeping, _⌊for they could not keep their eyes open_⌋.* ⁴⁴ And leaving them again, he went away and* prayed for the third time, saying the same thing again. ⁴⁵ Then he came to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is near, and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.

³⁷ And he came and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, "Simon, are you sleeping? Were you not able to stay awake one hour? ³⁸ Stay awake and pray that you will not enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak!" ³⁹ And again he went away and* prayed, saying the same thing. ⁴⁰ And again he came and* found them sleeping, _⌊for they could not keep their eyes open_⌋,* and they did not know what to reply to him.

¹¹ while* you also join in helping _⌊on our behalf_⌋* by prayer, so that thanks may be given _⌊on our behalf_⌋* by many persons for this gracious gift given to us through the help of many.

¹⁸ with all prayer and supplication praying at all times in the Spirit, and to this end being alert with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints,

¹⁹ for I know that this will turn out to me for deliverance through your prayer and the support of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

² Be devoted to prayer, keeping alert in it with thanksgiving,

²⁵ Brothers, pray for us.*

¹² Therefore strengthen your slackened hands and your weakened knees,

⁶ But let him ask for it in faith, without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven by the wind and tossed about.

²⁸ Joshua captured Makkedah on that day, and he struck it and its king with _⌊the edge of the sword_⌋;* he utterly destroyed it and everyone that was in it. He did not leave behind a survivor. So he did to the king of Makkedah just as he did to the king of Jericho.

³² And Yahweh gave Lachish into the hand of Israel, and he captured it on the second day. He struck it with _⌊the edge of the sword_⌋,* and everyone in it, just as he did to Libnah.

³⁷ and captured it, and they struck it with _⌊the edge of the sword_⌋,* its king and all its cities, and all the people that were in it; he left behind no survivor, as he had done to Eglon, and he utterly destroyed it and all the people that were in it.

⁴² all of these kings and their land Joshua captured at one time, because Yahweh the God of Israel fought for Israel.

¹² And Joshua captured all the cities of these kings, and all their kings, and he utterly destroyed them with _⌊the edge of the sword_⌋,* as Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded.

¹⁴ "And this day will become a memorial for you, and you will celebrate it as a religious feast for Yahweh throughout your generations; you will celebrate it as a lasting statute.

⁹ And it will be as a sign on your hand and as a memorial between your eyes so that the law of Yahweh will be in your mouth, that with a strong hand Yahweh brought you out from Egypt.

⁴ And Moses wrote all the words of Yahweh, and he rose early in the morning, and he built an altar at the base of the mountain and set up twelve memorial stones for the twelve tribes of Israel.

²⁷ And Yahweh said to Moses, "Write for yourself these words, because _⌊according to_⌋* these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel."

² Moses wrote down their movements according to their journeys on the command of Yahweh, and these are their journeys according to their movements.

⁹ So Moses wrote this law, and he gave it to the priests, the descendants* of Levi, the ones carrying the ark of the covenant of Yahweh, and to all the elders of Israel.

⁷ you will say to them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off _⌊from before_⌋* the ark of the covenant of Yahweh. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones will be as a memorial for the _⌊Israelites_⌋* for eternity."

² Thus says Yahweh of hosts: 'I have observed what Amalek did to Israel, _⌊how he opposed him_⌋* when he went up from Egypt. ³ So then, go and attack Amalek and utterly destroy all that is his! You must not spare him, but kill both man and woman, both child and nursing infant, both ox and sheep, both camel and donkey.'"

⁷ Then Saul defeated the Amalekites from Havilah as one goes to Shur which is _⌊east of_⌋* Egypt. ⁸ He captured Agag the king of Amalek alive, but all the people he utterly destroyed with the _⌊edge_⌋* of the sword.

¹⁸ When Yahweh sent you on your way, he said to you: 'Go! You must utterly destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, and you must fight against them until you* have destroyed them.'

⁸ Now David and his men went up and raided the Geshurites and the Girzites and the Amalekites, for they had been living in the land for a long time _⌊in the direction of_⌋* Shur and _⌊as far as_⌋* the land of Egypt. ⁹ So David struck the land and did not leave a man or a woman alive; he took the sheep,* the cattle, the donkeys, the camels, and the clothing. Then he returned and came to Achish.

¹⁷ Then David attacked them from twilight until the evening of the next day. Not a man of them escaped _⌊except_⌋* four hundred young men who rode off on camels and fled.

¹ _⌊After_⌋* the death of Saul, David returned from defeating the Amalekites and he stayed at Ziklag two days.

⁸ Then he said to me, 'Who are you?' And I said to him, 'I am an Amalekite.' ⁹ He said to me, 'Please stand over me and kill me, for convulsions have seized me, even though my life is still in me.' ¹⁰ So I stood over him and killed him, for I knew that he could not live after his falling; I took the crown that was on his head and the bracelet which was on his arm; and here, I have brought them to my lord. ¹¹ David grabbed at his clothes and tore them, as did all of the men who were with him. ¹² Then they mourned and wept and fasted over Saul and Jonathan his son until the evening, as well as over the people of Yahweh and over the house of Israel because they had fallen by the sword. ¹³ Then David said to the young man who was reporting to him, "Where are you from?" And he said, "I am the son of an alien man. I am an Amalekite." ¹⁴ David said to him, "How is it that you were not afraid to stretch out your hand to destroy Yahweh's anointed one?" ¹⁵ Then David called to one of the young men and said to him, "Come near; strike him." So he struck him down and he died. ¹⁶ David said to him, "Your blood is on your head, for your mouth has testified against you by saying, 'I killed Yahweh's anointed one!'"

¹² from Aram and from Moab and from the _⌊Ammonites_⌋* and from the Philistines and from Amalek and from the plunder of Hadadezer the son of Rehob, the king of Zobah.

⁴³ And they destroyed the remainder of the Amalekites who had escaped, and they have lived there to this day.

¹⁴ Shall we again break your commandments and intermarry with the peoples who practice these detestable things? Would you not be angry with us until you destroy us with no remnant or remainder?

¹⁷ His remembrance perishes from the earth, and there is not a name for him on the street.

²³ "_⌊O that_⌋* my words could be written down! _⌊O that they could be inscribed in a scroll_⌋!*

⁶ The enemies are destroyed in ruins forever, and you have uprooted their cities; their very memory has perished.

⁷ The memory of righteousness is like a blessing, but the name of the wicked will rot.

¹⁴ And Abraham called the name of that place "Yahweh _⌊will provide_⌋,"* _⌊for which reason_⌋* it is said today, "on the mountain of Yahweh _⌊it shall be provided_⌋."*

²⁰ And there he erected an altar and called it "El Elohe Israel."*

²⁴ And Gideon built there an altar to Yahweh, and he called it "Yahweh is peace." To this day it is still in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.*

⁴ You have rallied those who fear you round a banner _⌊out of bowshot_⌋,* Selah

⁸ Your hand will find all your enemies; your right hand will find those who hate you. ⁹ You will make them like your fiery furnace at the time of your appearance. Yahweh will swallow them in his wrath and fire will consume them. ¹⁰ You will destroy their _⌊offspring_⌋* from the earth, and their _⌊descendants_⌋* from among the children of humankind. ¹¹ Though they have _⌊plotted_⌋* evil against you, though they have planned a scheme, they will not prevail.

¹ Thus says Yahweh:
"Heaven is my throne, and the earth is the footstool for my feet. Where is this house that you would build for me? And where is this resting place for me?

⁴⁹ 'Heaven is my throne and earth is the footstool for my feet. What kind of house will you build for me, says the Lord, or what is the place of my rest?
