¹ Be not envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them. ² For their heart studies destruction, and their lips talk of mischief. ³ Through wisdom is a house built; and by understanding it is established: ⁴ And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches. ⁵ A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increases strength. ⁶ For by wise counsel you shall wage your war: and in a multitude of counselors there is safety. ⁷ Wisdom is too lofty for a fool: he opens not his mouth in the gate. ⁸ He that plans to do evil shall be called a mischievous person. ⁹ The thought of foolishness is sin: and the scoffer is an abomination to men. ¹⁰ If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small. ¹¹ Deliver those that are drawn toward death, hold back those that are stumbling to the slaughter; ¹² If you say, Behold, we knew it not; does not he that weighs the heart consider it? and he that keeps your soul, does not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works? ¹³ My son, eat honey because it is good; and the honeycomb, which is sweet to your taste: ¹⁴ So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto your soul: when you have found it, then there shall be a reward, and your hope shall not be cut off. ¹⁵ Lie not in wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous; spoil not his resting place: ¹⁶ For a just man falls seven times, and rises up again: but the wicked shall fall by calamity. ¹⁷ Rejoice not when your enemy falls, and let not your heart be glad when he stumbles: ¹⁸ Lest the LORD sees it, and it displeases him, and he turns away his wrath from him. ¹⁹ Fret not yourself because of evil men, neither be you envious at the wicked; ²⁰ For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the lamp of the wicked shall be put out. ²¹ My son, fear the LORD and the king: and associate not with them that are given to change: ²² For their calamity shall rise suddenly; and who knows the ruin of them both? ²³ These things also belong to the wise. It is not good to have partiality in judgment. ²⁴ He that says unto the wicked, you are righteous; him shall the people curse, nations shall abhor him: ²⁵ But to them that rebuke him shall be delight, and a good blessing shall come upon them. ²⁶ Every man shall kiss his lips who gives a right answer. ²⁷ Prepare your work outside, and make it fit for yourself in the field; and afterwards build your house. ²⁸ Be not a witness against your neighbor without cause; and deceive not with your lips. ²⁹ Say not, I will do so to him as he has done to me: I will render to the man according to his work. ³⁰ I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; ³¹ And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and weeds had covered its face, and its stone wall was broken down. ³² Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction. ³³ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ³⁴ So shall your poverty come like a robber; and your want like an armed man.

¹⁰ And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as you came unto Zoar. ¹¹ Then Lot chose all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other. ¹² Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom. ¹³ But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.

¹ And there came two angels to Sodom at evening; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground; ² And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and you shall rise up early, and go on your way. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night. ³ And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat. ⁴ But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, both old and young, all the people from every quarter: ⁵ And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men who came in to you this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them. ⁶ And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him, ⁷ And said, I pray you, brethren, do not act so wickedly. ⁸ Behold now, I have two daughters who have not known a man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do you to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof. ⁹ And they said, Stand back. And they said again, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with you, than with them. And they pressed hard upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door. ¹⁰ But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut the door. ¹¹ And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great: so that they wearied themselves trying to find the door.

⁹ Gather not my soul with sinners, nor my life with bloody men:

¹ [A Psalm of David.] Fret not yourself because of evildoers, neither be you envious of the workers of iniquity.

⁷ Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not yourself because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked devices to pass.

³ For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

¹¹ If they say, Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood, let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause: ¹² Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit: ¹³ We shall find all kinds of precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil: ¹⁴ Cast in your lot among us; let us all have one purse: ¹⁵ My son, walk not in the way with them; refrain your foot from their path:

³¹ Envy you not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.

²⁰ He that walks with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

¹⁷ Let not your heart envy sinners: but be in the fear of the LORD all the day long.

¹⁹ Fret not yourself because of evil men, neither be you envious at the wicked;

¹⁹ Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, impurity, licentiousness, ²⁰ Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, strife, jealousy, wrath, selfishness, divisions, heresies, ²¹ Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revelings, and such like: of which I tell you beforehand, as I have also told you in time past, that they who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

⁵ Do you think that the scripture says in vain, The spirit that dwells in us lusts to envy? ⁶ But he gives more grace. Therefore he says, God resists the proud, but gives grace unto the humble.

⁹ And David knew that Saul secretly plotted evil against him; and he said to Abiathar the priest, Bring here the ephod.

⁶ And he disdained to lay hands on Mordecai alone; for they had made known to him the people of Mordecai: therefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai. ⁷ In the first month, that is, the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of king Ahasuerus, they cast Pur, that is, the lot, before Haman from day to day, and from month to month, to the twelfth month, that is, the month Adar.

³⁵ They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their heart prepares deceit.

¹⁴ Behold, he brought forth iniquity, and has conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood.

⁷ His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity.

³ Draw me not away with the wicked, and with the workers of iniquity, who speak peace to their neighbors, but mischief is in their hearts.

⁴ He devises mischief upon his bed; he sets himself in a way that is not good; he abhors not evil.

⁴ That they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not. ⁵ They encourage themselves in an evil matter: they talk of laying snares secretly; they say, Who shall see them? ⁶ They search out iniquities; they accomplish a diligent search: both the inward thought of every one of them, and the heart, are deep.

² Who imagine evil in their heart; continually are they gathered together for war.

¹⁴ Perversity is in his heart, he devises evil continually; he sows discord.

⁸ He that plans to do evil shall be called a mischievous person.

⁴ None calls for justice, nor does any plead for truth: they trust in empty words, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.

³ That they may do evil with both hands earnestly, the prince asks, and the judge asks for a bribe; and the great man, he utters his evil desire: so they weave it together.

³ Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, ⁴ And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtlety, and kill him.

²⁰ Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spoke again to them. ²¹ But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.

¹⁰ And said, O full of all deceit and all mischief, you child of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?

²⁶ And let your name be magnified forever, saying, {} The LORD of hosts is the God over Israel: and let the house of your servant David be established before you.

¹ Wisdom has built her house, she has hewn out her seven pillars:

¹ Every wise woman builds her house: but the foolish plucks it down with her hands.

¹² He has made the earth by his power, he has established the world by his wisdom, and has stretched out the heavens at his discretion.

⁹ For we are laborers together with God: you are God's field, you are God's building.

⁷ Rooted and built up in him, and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.

²² And Solomon’s provision for one day was thirty cors of fine flour, and threescore cors of meal, ²³ Ten fatted oxen, and twenty oxen out of the pastures, and a hundred sheep, beside harts, gazelles, roebucks, and fatted fowl. ²⁴ For he had dominion over all the region on this side of the river, from Tiphsah even to Gaza, over all the kings on this side of the river: and he had peace on all sides round about him. ²⁵ And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, all the days of Solomon. ²⁶ And Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen. ²⁷ And those officers provided food for king Solomon, and for all that came unto king Solomon’s table, every man in his month: they lacked nothing. ²⁸ Barley also and straw for the horses and swift steeds brought they unto the place where the officers were, every man according to his charge.

²⁵ And over the king’s treasuries was Azmaveth the son of Adiel: and over the storehouses in the fields, in the cities, and in the villages, and in the towers, was Jonathan the son of Uzziah: ²⁶ And over them that did the work of the field for tillage of the ground was Ezri the son of Chelub: ²⁷ And over the vineyards was Shimei the Ramathite: over the produce of the vineyards for the wine cellars was Zabdi the Shiphmite: ²⁸ And over the olive trees and the sycamore trees that were in the lowlands was Baal-hanan the Gederite: and over the stores of oil was Joash: ²⁹ And over the herds that fed in Sharon was Shitrai the Sharonite: and over the herds that were in the valleys was Shaphat the son of Adlai: ³⁰ Over the camels also was Obil the Ishmaelite: and over the donkeys was Jehdeiah the Meronothite: ³¹ And over the flocks was Jaziz the Hagrite. All these were the officials over the property of king David.

² Now I have prepared with all my might for the house of my God the gold for things to be made of gold, and the silver for things of silver, and the bronze for things of bronze, the iron for things of iron, and wood for things of wood; onyx stones, and stones to be set, glistening stones, and of various colors, and all manner of precious stones, and marble stones in abundance. ³ Moreover, because I have set my affection on the house of my God, I have of my own things, of gold and silver, which I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house, ⁴ Even three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the houses: ⁵ The gold for things of gold, and the silver for things of silver, and for all manner of work to be made by the hands of craftsmen. And who then is willing to consecrate his service this day unto the LORD? ⁶ Then the heads of the fathers’ houses and the leaders of the tribes of Israel, and the captains of thousands and of hundreds, with the officers over the king’s work, offered willingly, ⁷ And gave for the service of the house of God of gold five thousand talents and ten thousand darics, and of silver ten thousand talents, and of bronze eighteen thousand talents, and one hundred thousand talents of iron. ⁸ And they with whom precious stones were found gave them to the treasury of the house of the LORD, by the hand of Jehiel the Gershonite. ⁹ Then the people rejoiced, for they offered willingly, because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the LORD: and David the king also rejoiced with great joy.

¹⁸ Thus Solomon made all these articles in great abundance: for the weight of the bronze could not be measured. ¹⁹ And Solomon made all the articles that were for the house of God, the golden altar also, and the tables on which the showbread was set; ²⁰ Moreover the lampstands with their lamps, that they should burn in the prescribed manner before the inner sanctuary, of pure gold; ²¹ And the flowers, and the lamps, and the tongs, made he of gold, the purest gold; ²² And the snuffers, and the basins, and the spoons, and the censers, of pure gold: and the entrance of the house, the inner doors for the most holy place, and the doors of the house of the temple, were of gold.

⁴ And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father Amaziah did. ⁵ And he sought God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of God: and as long as he sought the LORD, God made him to prosper. ⁶ And he went forth and warred against the Philistines, and broke down the wall of Gath, and the wall of Jabneh, and the wall of Ashdod, and built cities around Ashdod, and among the Philistines. ⁷ And God helped him against the Philistines, and against the Arabians that dwelt in Gur-baal, and the Mehunites. ⁸ And the Ammonites gave gifts to Uzziah: and his name spread abroad even to the entrance of Egypt; for he strengthened himself exceedingly. ⁹ Moreover Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the corner gate, and at the valley gate, and at the turning of the wall, and fortified them. ¹⁰ Also he built towers in the desert, and dug many wells: for he had many cattle, both in the low country, and in the plains: farmers also, and vine dressers in the mountains, and in Carmel: for he loved the soil. ¹¹ Moreover Uzziah had an army of fighting men, that went out to war by divisions, according to the number on their roll by the hand of Jeiel the scribe and Maaseiah the officer, under the hand of Hananiah, one of the king’s captains.

³⁹ For the children of Israel and the children of Levi shall bring the offering of the grain, of the new wine, and the oil, unto the chambers, where are the vessels of the sanctuary, and the priests that minister, and the gatekeepers, and the singers: and we will not forsake the house of our God.

⁵ And he had prepared for him a great chamber, where previously they stored the grain offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, which was commanded to be given to the Levites, and the singers, and the gatekeepers; and the offerings of the priests. ⁶ But in all this time I was not at Jerusalem: for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon came I unto the king, and after certain days obtained I leave of the king: ⁷ And I came to Jerusalem, and discovered the evil that Eliashib did for Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God. ⁸ And it grieved me greatly: therefore I cast forth all the household goods of Tobiah out of the chamber. ⁹ Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers: and there I brought again the articles of the house of God, with the grain offering and the frankincense. ¹⁰ And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them: for the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field. ¹¹ Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place. ¹² Then brought all Judah the tithe of the grain and the new wine and the oil unto the storehouse. ¹³ And I made treasurers over the storehouse, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah: for they were counted faithful, and their duty was to distribute unto their brethren.

²¹ That I may cause those that love me to inherit wealth; and I will fill their treasuries.

⁶ In the house of the righteous is much treasure: but in the income of the wicked is trouble.

¹⁵ There is gold, and a multitude of rubies: but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

²⁰ There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spends it up.

²³ Be diligent to know the state of your flocks, and look well to your herds. ²⁴ For riches are not forever: and does the crown endure to every generation? ²⁵ The hay appears, and the tender grass shows itself, and herbs of the mountains are gathered. ²⁶ The lambs are for your clothing, and the goats are for the price of the field. ²⁷ And you shall have goats' milk enough for your food, for the food of your household, and for the maintenance for your maidservants.

⁵² Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe who is instructed concerning the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is a householder, who brings forth out of his treasure things new and old.

⁷ They go from strength to strength, every one of them in Zion appears before God.

¹⁴ Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.

²⁹ The way of the LORD is strength to the upright: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.

²² A wise man scales the city of the mighty, and casts down the stronghold in which they trust.

¹⁹ Wisdom strengthens the wise more than ten mighty men who are in the city.

¹⁴ There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it: ¹⁵ Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man. ¹⁶ Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard. ¹⁷ The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that rules among fools. ¹⁸ Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroys much good.

³¹ But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

¹¹ Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;

¹⁴ Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.

²² Without counsel plans go wrong: but in the multitude of counselors they are established.

¹⁸ Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice wage war.

³¹ Or what king, going to make war against another king, sits not down first, and consults whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that comes against him with twenty thousand?

²⁵ And every man that strives for self control is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. ²⁶ I therefore so run, not with uncertainty; so fight I, not as one that beats the air: ²⁷ But I roughly treat my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be disqualified.

¹⁰ Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. ¹¹ Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. ¹² For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in heavenly places. ¹³ Therefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. ¹⁴ Stand therefore, having your loins girded about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; ¹⁵ And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; ¹⁶ Above all, taking the shield of faith, with which you shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. ¹⁷ And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: ¹⁸ Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thus with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; ¹⁹ And for me, that utterance may be given unto me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, ²⁰ For which I am an ambassador in bonds: that in this I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

¹¹ But you, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. ¹² Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you are also called, and have professed a good profession before many witnesses.

⁷ I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:

⁴ His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them.

⁷ When I went out to the gate of the city, when I prepared my seat in the open square! ⁸ The young men saw me, and hid themselves: and the aged arose, and stood up. ⁹ The princes refrained from talking, and laid their hand on their mouth. ¹⁰ The nobles held their peace, and their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth. ¹¹ When the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me: ¹² Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him. ¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my justice was as a robe and a turban. ¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out. ¹⁷ And I broke the fangs of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth. ¹⁸ Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand. ¹⁹ My root was spread out to the waters, and the dew lay all night upon my branch. ²⁰ My glory was fresh in me, and my bow was renewed in my hand. ²¹ Unto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence at my counsel. ²² After my words they spoke not again; and my speech dropped upon them. ²³ And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain. ²⁴ If I mocked them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down. ²⁵ I chose out their way, and sat as chief, and dwelt like a king in the army, as one that comforts the mourners.

²¹ If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw I had help in the gate:

⁵ His ways are always prosperous; your judgments are far above, out of his sight: as for all his enemies, he sneers at them.

⁵ O LORD, how great are your works! and your thoughts are very deep. ⁶ A senseless man knows not; neither does a fool understand this.

⁶ A scoffer seeks wisdom, and finds it not: but knowledge is easy unto him that understands.

²⁴ The way of life leads above to the wise, that he may depart from sheol beneath.

²⁴ Wisdom is before him that has understanding; but the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth.

²² Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither oppress the afflicted in the gate:

⁸ Open your mouth for the dumb, for the cause of all who are left desolate. ⁹ Open your mouth, judge righteously, and plead the cause of the poor and needy.

²¹ That make a man an offender for a word, and lay a snare for him that reproves in the gate, and turn aside the just for a thing of nothing.

¹⁰ They hate him that rebukes in the gate, and they abhor him that speaks uprightly.

¹² For I know your manifold transgressions, and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right.

¹⁵ Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish justice in the gate: it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.

¹⁴ But the natural man receives not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

⁴⁴ The king said moreover to Shimei, You know all the wickedness which was in your heart, that you did to David my father: therefore the LORD shall return your wickedness upon your own head;

¹¹ For they intended evil against you: they devised a mischievous act, which they are not able to perform.

¹⁸ A heart that devises wicked imaginations, feet that are swift in running to evil,

²² Do they not err that devise evil? but mercy and truth shall be to them that devise good.

² For their heart studies destruction, and their lips talk of mischief.

⁹ The thought of foolishness is sin: and the scoffer is an abomination to men.

⁷ Yet he means not so, neither does his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy and cut off nations, not a few. ⁸ For he says, Are not my princes altogether kings? ⁹ Is not Calno as Carchemish? is not Hamath as Arpad? is not Samaria as Damascus? ¹⁰ As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols, and whose graven images did excel them of Jerusalem and of Samaria: ¹¹ Shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols? ¹² Therefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord has performed his whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks. ¹³ For he says, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am prudent: and I have removed the boundaries of the people, and have robbed their treasures, and I have put down the inhabitants like a valiant man:

⁷ The schemes also of the schemer are evil: he devises wicked plans to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy speaks justly.

¹⁰ Thus says the Lord GOD; It shall also come to pass, that at the same time shall things come into your mind, and you shall think an evil thought: ¹¹ And you shall say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates,

¹¹ There has one come out of you, that imagines evil against the LORD, a wicked counselor.

³⁰ Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

⁵ And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

²¹ And the LORD smelled a sweet odor; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more everything living, as I have done.

¹¹³ [Samek] I hate vain thoughts: but your law do I love.

¹⁰ Cast out the scoffer, and contention shall go out; yea, strife and reproach shall cease.

⁷ For as he thinks in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, says he to you; but his heart is not with you.

⁸ Scornful men bring a city into a snare: but wise men turn away wrath.

⁷ Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

¹⁴ O Jerusalem, wash your heart from wickedness, that you may be saved. How long shall your vain thoughts lodge within you?

²⁸ But I say unto you, That whosoever looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.

⁴ And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Why think you evil in your hearts?

¹⁹ For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

²² Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you.

⁵ Casting down arguments, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

¹ And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more in any border of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand.

⁵ But now it is come upon you, and you faint; it touches you, and you are troubled.

²⁸ Have you not known? have you not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, faints not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. ²⁹ He gives power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increases strength. ³⁰ Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: ³¹ But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

⁴⁶ And lest your heart faint, and you fear for the rumor that shall be heard in the land; a rumor shall both come one year, and after that in another year shall come a rumor, and violence in the land, ruler against ruler.

⁸ (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy food.)

¹ Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;

¹³ Therefore I desire that you faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.

³ For consider him that endured such hostility of sinners against himself, lest you be wearied and faint in your minds. ⁴ You have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin. ⁵ And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks unto you as unto children, My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when you are rebuked of him:

³ And have endured, and have patience, and for my name's sake have labored, and have not fainted.

¹³ I know your works and where you dwell, even where Satan's throne is: and you hold fast my name, and have not denied my faith, even in those days when Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwells.

⁸ Then said Abishai to David, God has delivered your enemy into your hand this day: now therefore let me strike him, I pray you, with the spear even to the earth at once, and I will not strike him the second time. ⁹ And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his hand against the LORD'S anointed, and be guiltless?

¹⁷ And I broke the fangs of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.

⁴ Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked.

⁶ Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke? ⁷ Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, and that you bring the poor that are cast out to your house? when you see the naked, that you cover him; and that you hide not yourself from your own flesh?

³¹ And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. ³² And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.

²³ And they were urgent with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed. ²⁴ And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they demanded. ²⁵ And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.

¹⁷ Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes, the chief ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment seat. And Gallio cared for none of those things.

³¹ And as they went about to kill him, tidings came unto the chief captain of the band, that all Jerusalem was in an uproar. ³² Who immediately took soldiers and centurions, and ran down unto them: and when they saw the chief captain and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.

¹⁰ And when there arose a great dissension, the chief captain, fearing lest Paul should have been pulled in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down, and to take him by force from among them, and to bring him into the barracks.

²³ And he called unto him two centurions, saying, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go to Caesarea, and horsemen seventy, and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night; ²⁴ And provide them mounts, that they may set Paul on, and bring him safe unto Felix the governor. ²⁵ And he wrote a letter after this manner: ²⁶ Claudius Lysias unto the most excellent governor Felix sends greeting. ²⁷ This man was taken of the Jews, and would have been killed of them: then came I with an army, and rescued him, having understood that he was a Roman. ²⁸ And when I would have known the cause for which they accused him, I brought him forth into their council: ²⁹ Whom I perceived to be accused of questions of their law, but to have nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bonds. ³⁰ And when it was told me that the Jews laid wait for the man, I sent immediately to you, and gave commandment to his accusers also to say before you what they had against him. Farewell. ³¹ Then the soldiers, as it was commanded them, took Paul, and brought him by night to Antipatris. ³² The next day they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the barracks: ³³ When they came to Caesarea, and delivered the epistle to the governor, they presented Paul also before him. ³⁴ And when the governor had read the letter, he asked of what province he was. And when he understood that he was of Cilicia he said, ³⁵ I will hear you when your accusers are also come. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod's judgment hall.

¹⁶ By this perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. ¹⁷ But whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother have need, and shuts up his heart of compassion from him, how dwells the love of God in him?

⁶ The LORD kills, and makes alive: he brings down to the grave, and brings up.

⁷ But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.

²⁹ Yet a man has risen to pursue you, and to seek your soul: but the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living with the LORD your God; and the souls of your enemies, them shall he sling out, as out of the middle of a sling.

¹¹ For the work of a man shall he render unto him, and cause every man to find according to his ways.

⁹ Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: for the righteous God tests the minds and hearts.

³ You have proved my heart; you have visited me in the night; you have tested me, and shall find nothing; I have purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.

²¹ Shall not God search this out? for he knows the secrets of the heart.

¹² Also unto you, O Lord, belongs mercy: for you render to every man according to his work.

⁹ Who holds our soul in life, and allows not our feet to be moved.

³ He will not allow your foot to be moved: he that keeps you will not slumber.

⁸ The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore.

²¹ For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he ponders all his paths.

² Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD weighs the hearts.

⁸ If you see the oppression of the poor, and violent perverting of justice and righteousness in a province, marvel not at the matter: for the high official is watched by a higher one; and there are yet higher ones over them.

¹⁰ I the LORD search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

¹⁹ Great in counsel, and mighty in work: for your eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men: to give everyone according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:

²³ But have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before you, and you, and your lords, your wives, and your concubines, have drunk wine in them; and you have praised the gods of silver, and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand your breath is, and whose are all your ways, have you not glorified:

²⁷ For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.

²⁸ For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

⁶ Who will render to every man according to his deeds:

¹⁶ In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.

⁵ Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.

¹⁰ For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that everyone may be recompensed for the things done in his body, according to what he has done, whether it be good or bad.

¹² For the word of God is living, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. ¹³ Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

¹⁸ I am he that lives, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive forevermore, Amen; and have the keys of hades and of death.

¹⁸ And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things says the Son of God, who has his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine bronze;

²³ And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he who searches the minds and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

¹² And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. ¹³ And the sea gave up the dead who were in it; and death and hades delivered up the dead who were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. ¹⁴ And death and hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. ¹⁵ And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

¹² And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

¹⁰ More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

¹⁰³ How sweet are your words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

¹⁶ Have you found honey? eat only as much as is sufficient for you, lest you be filled with it, and vomit it.

²⁷ It is not good to eat much honey: so for men to search out their own glory is not glory.

¹¹ Your lips, O my spouse, drop like the honeycomb: honey and milk are under your tongue; and the fragrance of your garments is like the fragrance of Lebanon.

¹ I have come into my garden, my sister, my spouse: I have gathered my myrrh with my spice; I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey; I have drunk my wine with my milk: eat, O friends; drink, yea, drink abundantly, O beloved.

¹⁵ Curds and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good.

⁴ And the same John had his clothing of camel's hair, and a leather belt about his waist; and his food was locusts and wild honey.

¹⁰ More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. ¹¹ Moreover by them is your servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.

¹¹¹ Your testimonies have I taken as a heritage forever: for they are the rejoicing of my heart.

¹ My son, if you will receive my words, and lay up my commandments with you; ² So that you incline your ear unto wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; ³ Yea, if you cry after knowledge, and lift up your voice for understanding; ⁴ If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hid treasures; ⁵ Then shall you understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

¹⁰ When wisdom enters into your heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto your soul;

¹³ Happy is the man that finds wisdom, and the man that gets understanding. ¹⁴ For the gain from it is better than the gain from silver, and the profit thereof than fine gold. ¹⁵ She is more precious than rubies: and all the things you can desire are not to be compared unto her. ¹⁶ Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honor. ¹⁷ Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. ¹⁸ She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is everyone that retains her.

¹⁸ For it is a pleasant thing if you keep them within you; they shall all be fitted on your lips.

¹⁸ For surely there is a future hope; and your expectation shall not be cut off.

¹⁶ Your words were found, and I did eat them; and your word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of my heart: for I am called by your name, O LORD God of hosts.

²¹ Jesus said unto him, If you will be perfect, go and sell what you have, and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

²⁵ But whoever looks into the perfect law of liberty, and continues in it, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

¹¹ And as they went up the hill to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said unto them, Is the seer here?

¹⁸ And the king said to Doeg, Turn you, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and slew on that day fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen ephod. ¹⁹ And Nob, the city of the priests, struck he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and nursing infants, and oxen, and donkeys, and sheep, with the edge of the sword.

²⁰ Now therefore, O king, come down according to all the desire of your soul to come down; and our part shall be to deliver him into the king's hand. ²¹ And Saul said, Blessed be you of the LORD; for you have compassion on me. ²² Go, I pray you, prepare yet, and know and see the place where his hideout is, and who has seen him there: for it is told me that he deals very craftily. ²³ See therefore, and take knowledge of all the lurking places where he hides himself, and come you again to me with certainty, and I will go with you: and it shall come to pass, if he be in the land, that I will search him out throughout all the thousands of Judah.

⁸ He sits in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places does he murder the innocent: his eyes are secretly set against the poor. ⁹ He lies in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lies in wait to catch the poor: he does catch the poor, when he draws him into his net. ¹⁰ He crouches, and lies low, that the poor may fall by his strength.

³² The wicked watches the righteous, and seeks to slay him.

⁶ They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps, when they wait for my soul.

³ For, lo, they lie in wait for my soul: the mighty are gathered against me; not for my transgression, nor for my sin, O LORD.

⁵ The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set traps for me. Selah.

¹¹ If they say, Come with us, let us lie in wait for blood, let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause:

²⁸ Remove not the ancient landmark, which your fathers have set.

¹⁸ And my people shall dwell in a peaceful habitation, and in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places;

¹⁹ But I was like a lamb or an ox that is brought to the slaughter; and I knew not that they had devised plots against me, saying, Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, and let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be no more remembered.

⁴ And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtlety, and kill him.

²⁴ But their plot was known of Saul. And they watched the gates day and night to kill him.

¹⁶ And when Paul's sister's son heard of their lying in wait, he went and entered into the barracks, and told Paul.

³ And desired a favor from him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem, plotting to kill him along the way.

¹⁰ David said furthermore, As the LORD lives, the LORD shall strike him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall descend into battle, and perish.

⁴ Then said Saul unto his armorbearer, Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armorbearer would not; for he was greatly afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it.

¹⁰ So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath abated.

¹⁹ He shall deliver you in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch you.

¹⁶ His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violent dealing shall come down upon his own crown.

¹⁹ Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivers him out of them all.

²⁴ Though he falls, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholds him with his hand.

⁵ God shall likewise destroy you forever, he shall take you away, and pluck you out of your dwelling place, and root you out of the land of the living. Selah.

¹⁷ A wicked messenger falls into trouble: but a faithful ambassador is health.

³² The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous has hope in his death.

¹⁴ Happy is the man that is reverent always: but he that hardens his heart shall fall into calamity. ¹⁵ As a roaring lion, and a charging bear; so is a wicked ruler over the poor people. ¹⁶ The prince that lacks understanding is also a great oppressor: but he that hates covetousness shall prolong his days. ¹⁷ A man that does violence to the blood of any person shall flee to a pit; let no man help him. ¹⁸ Whosoever walks uprightly shall be saved: but he that is perverse in his ways shall fall at once.

² The virgin of Israel has fallen; she shall no more rise: she is forsaken upon her land; there is none to raise her up.

¹⁴ They that swear by the sin of Samaria, and say, Your god, O Dan, lives; and, The way of Beersheba lives; even they shall fall, and never rise up again.

⁸ Rejoice not against me, O my enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me. ⁹ I will bear the indignation of the LORD, because I have sinned against him, until he pleads my cause, and executes justice for me: he will bring me forth to the light, and I shall behold his righteousness. ¹⁰ Then she that is my enemy shall see it, and shame shall cover her who said unto me, Where is the LORD your God? my eyes shall behold her: now shall she be trodden down as the mire of the streets.

²³ And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and died.

⁸ For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, so that we despaired even of life: ⁹ But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead: ¹⁰ Who delivered us from so great a death, and does deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;

⁸ We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; ⁹ Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; ¹⁰ Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. ¹¹ For we who live are always delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. ¹² So then death works in us, but life in you.

²³ Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labors more abundant, in stripes beyond measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths often. ²⁴ Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes less one. ²⁵ Three times was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, three times I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; ²⁶ In journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by my own countrymen, in perils by the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; ²⁷ In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.

³ For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction comes upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

²⁰ Rejoice over her, you heaven, and you holy apostles and prophets; for God has avenged you on her. ²¹ And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.

²⁵ And it came to pass, when their hearts were merry, that they said, Call for Samson, that he may make sport for us. And they called for Samson out of the prison house; and he made sport for them: and they set him between the pillars.

⁵ And when king David came to Bahurim, behold, there came out a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera: he came forth, and cursed continually as he came. ⁶ And he cast stones at David, and at all the servants of king David: and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left. ⁷ And thus said Shimei when he cursed, Come out, come out, you bloody man, and you man of Belial: ⁸ The LORD has returned upon you all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose place you have reigned; and the LORD has delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom your son: and, behold, you are taken in your mischief, because you are a bloody man. ⁹ Then said Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king, Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray you, and take off his head. ¹⁰ And the king said, What have I to do with you, you sons of Zeruiah? so let him curse, because the LORD has said unto him, Curse David. Who shall then say, Why have you done so? ¹¹ And David said to Abishai, and to all his servants, Behold, my son, who came forth of my own body, seeks my life: how much more now may this Benjamite do it? let him alone, and let him curse; for the LORD has bidden him. ¹² It may be that the LORD will look on my affliction, and that the LORD will repay me good for his cursing this day. ¹³ And as David and his men went by the way, Shimei went along on the hill’s side opposite him, and cursed as he went, and threw stones at him, and cast dust. ¹⁴ And the king, and all the people that were with him, became weary, and refreshed themselves there.

²⁹ If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:

¹⁵ But in my adversity they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together: yea, the attackers gathered themselves together against me, and I knew it not; they did tear me, and ceased not:

¹⁹ Let not them that are my enemies wrongfully rejoice over me: neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause.

¹⁰ As with a sword in my bones, my enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is your God?

⁵ Whosoever mocks the poor reproaches his Maker: and he that is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.

¹² But you should not have looked down on the day of your brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither should you have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither should you have spoken proudly in the day of distress.

⁶ Rejoices not in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; ⁷ Bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

²¹ Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, that dwells in the land of Uz; the cup also shall pass through unto you: you shall be drunk, and shall make yourself naked. ²² The punishment of your iniquity is accomplished, O daughter of Zion; he will no more carry you away into captivity: he will punish your iniquity, O daughter of Edom; he will uncover your sins.

¹⁵ And I am very much displeased with the nations that are at ease: for I was but a little displeased, and they furthered the disaster. ¹⁶ Therefore thus says the LORD; I have returned to Jerusalem with mercies: my house shall be built in it, says the LORD of hosts, and a measuring line shall be stretched forth upon Jerusalem.

²⁶ And he spoke unto the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest you be consumed in all their sins.

¹ Blessed is the man that walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful.

⁴ I have not sat with vain persons, neither will I go in with hypocrites. ⁵ I have hated the congregation of evildoers; and will not sit with the wicked.

¹¹⁵ Depart from me, you evildoers: for I will keep the commandments of my God.

¹ Be not envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them.

¹⁷ Therefore come out from among them, and be you separate, says the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you,

¹¹ And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.

² For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, ³ Without natural affection, truce breakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, ⁴ Traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; ⁵ Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

⁴ And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that you be not partakers of her sins, and that you receive not of her plagues. ⁵ Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the flame of his fire shall not shine. ⁶ The light shall be dark in his tent, and his lamp shall be put out with him.

¹⁷ How often is the lamp of the wicked put out! and how often comes their destruction upon them! God distributes sorrows in his anger.

¹⁷ The wicked shall be turned into sheol, and all the nations that forget God.

⁶ Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, and a horrible tempest: this shall be the portion of their cup.

⁹ The light of the righteous rejoices: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

²⁰ Whosoever curses his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in utter darkness.

¹¹ Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be done to him.

¹² But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

⁸ And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out.

¹³ Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.

³¹ And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his servant Moses.

¹ Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men: ² And they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty leaders of the assembly, representatives of the congregation, men of renown: ³ And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, You take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them: why then lift you up yourselves above the congregation of the LORD?

⁵ And said unto him, Behold, you are old, and your sons walk not in your ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. ⁶ But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD. ⁷ And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto you: for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

¹² And when you saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, you said unto me, Nay; but a king shall reign over us: when the LORD your God was your king. ¹³ Now therefore behold the king whom you have chosen, and whom you have desired! and, behold, the LORD has set a king over you. ¹⁴ If you will fear the LORD, and serve him, and obey his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall both you and also the king that reigns over you continue following the LORD your God: ¹⁵ But if you will not obey the voice of the LORD, but rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then shall the hand of the LORD be against you, as it was against your fathers. ¹⁶ Now therefore stand and see this great thing, which the LORD will do before your eyes. ¹⁷ Is it not wheat harvest today? I will call unto the LORD, and he shall send thunder and rain; that you may perceive and see that your wickedness is great, which you have done in the sight of the LORD, in asking you a king. ¹⁸ So Samuel called unto the LORD; and the LORD sent thunder and rain that day: and all the people greatly feared the LORD and Samuel. ¹⁹ And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for your servants unto the LORD your God, that we die not: for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a king.

⁶ And he said unto his men, The LORD forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the LORD'S anointed, to stretch forth my hand against him, seeing he is the anointed of the LORD.

¹³ And there came a messenger to David, saying, The hearts of the men of Israel have gone after Absalom. ¹⁴ And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee; for we shall not else escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly, and bring evil upon us, and strike the city with the edge of the sword. ¹⁵ And the king’s servants said unto the king, Behold, your servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shall command. ¹⁶ And the king went forth, and all his household after him. And the king left ten women, who were concubines, to keep the house. ¹⁷ And the king went forth, and all the people after him, and tarried in a place that was far off. ¹⁸ And all his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men who came after him from Gath, passed on before the king. ¹⁹ Then said the king to Ittai the Gittite, Why go you also with us? return to your place, and abide with the king: for you are a stranger, and also an exile. ²⁰ You came only yesterday, should I this day make you go up and down with us? seeing I go where I may, return you, and take back your brethren: mercy and truth be with you. ²¹ And Ittai answered the king, and said, As the LORD lives, and as my lord the king lives, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will your servant be. ²² And David said to Ittai, Go and pass over. And Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones that were with him. ²³ And all the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed over: the king also himself passed over the brook Kidron, and all the people passed over, toward the way of the wilderness. ²⁴ And lo Zadok also, and all the Levites were with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God: and they set down the ark of God; and Abiathar went up, until all the people had all passed out of the city. ²⁵ And the king said unto Zadok, Carry back the ark of God into the city: if I shall find favor in the eyes of the LORD, he will bring me again, and show me both it, and his habitation: ²⁶ But if he thus says, I have no delight in you; behold, here am I, let him do to me as seems good unto him. ²⁷ The king said also unto Zadok the priest, Are not you a seer? return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz your son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar. ²⁸ See, I will tarry in the plain of the wilderness, until there come word from you to inform me. ²⁹ Zadok therefore and Abiathar carried the ark of God again to Jerusalem: and they tarried there. ³⁰ And David went up by the ascent of mount Olivet, and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went barefoot: and all the people that were with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up. ³¹ And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O LORD, I pray you, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness. ³² And it came to pass, that when David was come to the top of the mount, where he worshiped God, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat torn, and earth upon his head: ³³ Unto whom David said, If you go on with me, then you shall be a burden unto me: ³⁴ But if you return to the city, and say unto Absalom, I will be your servant, O king; as I have been your father’s servant in time past, so will I now also be your servant: then you may for me defeat the counsel of Ahithophel. ³⁵ And have you not there with you Zadok and Abiathar the priests? therefore it shall be, that whatsoever thing you shall hear out of the king’s house, you shall tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests. ³⁶ Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz Zadok’s son, and Jonathan Abiathar’s son; and by them you shall send unto me everything that you can hear. ³⁷ So Hushai David’s friend came into the city, and Absalom came into Jerusalem.

¹⁶ So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to your own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.

² I counsel you to keep the king's commandment, and that for the sake of your oath to God. ³ Be not hasty to go out of his presence: stand not for an evil thing; for he does whatsoever pleases him. ⁴ Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What are you doing? ⁵ Whosoever keeps the commandment shall experience no evil thing: and a wise man's heart discerns both time and judgment.

²¹ They said unto him, Caesar's. Then said he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.

¹ Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. ² Whosoever therefore resists the power, resists the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves judgment. ³ For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Will you then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and you shall have praise of the same: ⁴ For he is the minister of God to you for good. But if you do that which is evil, be afraid; for he bears not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, an avenger to execute wrath upon him that does evil. ⁵ Therefore you must be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience’s sake. ⁶ For, for this cause pay you tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. ⁷ Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.

¹ Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,

¹³ Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; ¹⁴ Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well. ¹⁵ For so is the will of God, that with well doing you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: ¹⁶ As free, and not using your liberty for a cloak of maliciousness, but as the servants of God. ¹⁷ Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.

³¹ And it came to pass, as he had made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground split asunder that was under them: ³² And the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men that belonged unto Korah, and all their goods. ³³ They, and all that belonged to them, went down alive into the pit, and the earth closed upon them: and they perished from among the congregation. ³⁴ And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them: for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up also. ³⁵ And there came out a fire from the LORD, and consumed the two hundred and fifty men that offered incense.

¹ Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa. ² And the Philistines followed close upon Saul and upon his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchishua, Saul's sons. ³ And the battle went hard against Saul, and the archers hit him; and he was severely wounded of the archers. ⁴ Then said Saul unto his armorbearer, Draw your sword, and thrust me through with it; lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armorbearer would not; for he was greatly afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword, and fell upon it. ⁵ And when his armorbearer saw that Saul was dead, he fell likewise upon his sword, and died with him. ⁶ So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armorbearer, and all his men, that same day together. ⁷ And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley, and they that were on the other side of Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.

⁷ Where the people of Israel were slain before the servants of David, and there was there a great slaughter that day of twenty thousand men. ⁸ For the battle was there scattered over the face of all the country: and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.

¹⁶ And the children of Israel fled before Judah: and God delivered them into their hand. ¹⁷ And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter: so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men.

¹¹ Who knows the power of your anger? even according to your fear, so is your wrath.

¹⁴ The wrath of a king is as messengers of death: but a wise man will appease it.

² The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whosoever provokes him to anger sins against his own life.

¹¹ Ephraim is oppressed and broken in judgment, because he willingly walked after a human commandment.

¹⁰ I will be your king: where is any other that may save you in all your cities? and your judges of whom you said, Give me a king and princes? ¹¹ I gave you a king in my anger, and took him away in my wrath.

¹⁵ You shall do no unrighteousness in judgment: you shall not be partial to the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty: but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor.

¹⁷ You shall not respect persons in judgment; but you shall hear the small as well as the great; you shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God's: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it.

¹⁹ You shall not pervert judgment; you shall not show partiality, neither take a bribe: for a bribe does blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words of the righteous.

⁷ Therefore now let the fear of the LORD be upon you; take heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with the LORD our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of bribes.

² How long will you judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked? Selah. ³ Defend the poor and fatherless: do justice to the afflicted and needy. ⁴ Deliver the poor and needy: rid them out of the hand of the wicked.

⁴³ Whoever is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the LORD.

⁶ To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their riddles.

⁵ It is not good to be partial to the wicked, or to overthrow the righteous in judgment.

¹⁷ Bow down your ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply your heart unto my knowledge.

²¹ To show partiality is not good: because for a piece of bread that man will transgress.

¹ Who is as the wise man? and who knows the interpretation of a thing? a man's wisdom makes his face to shine, and the hardness of his face is changed.

⁹ Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall stumble in them.

²⁴ Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

²⁰ Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear. ²¹ I charge you before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that you observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.

⁴ Are you not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts? ⁵ Hearken, my beloved brethren, Has not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he has promised to them that love him? ⁶ But you have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judges?

¹⁷ But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

¹⁷ And if you call on the Father, who without respect of persons judges according to every man's work, pass the time of your exile here in fear:

⁶ You shall not pervert the justice of your poor in his dispute. ⁷ Keep far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay you not: for I will not justify the wicked.

²⁶ He that withholds grain, the people shall curse him: but blessing shall be upon the head of him that sells it.

¹⁵ He that justifies the wicked, and he that condemns the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD.

²⁷ He that gives unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hides his eyes shall have many a curse.

¹⁰ Accuse not a servant unto his master, lest he curse you, and you be found guilty.

²⁰ Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

²³ Who justify the wicked for a bribe, and take away the justice of the righteous from him!

²⁴ And they shall go forth, and look upon the corpses of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorrence unto all flesh.

¹³ For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them everyone is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest everyone deals falsely. ¹⁴ They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people lightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.

¹⁷ You shall not hate your brother in your heart: you shall surely rebuke your neighbor, and not bear sin because of him.

¹³ For I have told him that I will judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knows; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.

¹⁹ And you shall speak unto him, saying, Thus says the LORD, Have you killed, and also taken possession? And you shall speak unto him, saying, Thus says the LORD, In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick your blood, even yours. ²⁰ And Ahab said to Elijah, Have you found me, O my enemy? And he answered, I have found you: because you have sold yourself to work evil in the sight of the LORD.

⁷ Then I consulted with myself, and I rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said unto them, you exact interest, every one from his brother. And I held a great assembly against them. ⁸ And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, who were sold unto the nations; and will you even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing to answer. ⁹ Also I said, It is not good what you do: ought you not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the nations our enemies?

⁸ And it grieved me greatly: therefore I cast forth all the household goods of Tobiah out of the chamber. ⁹ Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers: and there I brought again the articles of the house of God, with the grain offering and the frankincense. ¹⁰ And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them: for the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field. ¹¹ Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.

¹⁷ Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that you do, and profane the sabbath day?

²⁵ And I contended with them, and pronounced them cursed, and struck certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, You shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for yourselves.

²⁸ And one of the sons of Jehoiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me.

¹⁶ I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out. ¹⁷ And I broke the fangs of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth. ¹⁸ Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand.

²³ He that rebukes a man shall find more favor afterwards than he that flatters with the tongue.

⁴ For John said unto him, It is not lawful for you to have her.

²⁰ Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.

² Preach the word; be diligent in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

¹³ This witness is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith;

¹⁵ These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise you.

³⁸ And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is? ³⁹ And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Since God has showed you all this, there is none so discreet and wise as you are: ⁴⁰ You shall be over my house, and according unto your word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than you. ⁴¹ And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set you over all the land of Egypt. ⁴² And Pharaoh took off his ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph's hand, and arrayed him in clothing of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck; ⁴³ And he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried before him, Bow the knee: and he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt. ⁴⁴ And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I am Pharaoh, and without you shall no man lift up his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt. ⁴⁵ And Pharaoh called Joseph's name Zaphenathpaneah; and he gave him to wife Asenath the daughter of Potiphera priest of On. And Joseph went out over all the land of Egypt. ⁴⁶ And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt. ⁴⁷ And in the seven plenteous years the earth brought forth by handfuls. ⁴⁸ And he gathered up all the food of the seven years, which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities: the food of the field, which was round about every city, laid he up in the same. ⁴⁹ And Joseph gathered grain as the sand of the sea, very much, until he quit numbering; for it was without number. ⁵⁰ And unto Joseph were born two sons before the years of famine came, which Asenath the daughter of Potiphera priest of On bore unto him. ⁵¹ And Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh: For God, said he, has made me forget all my toil, and all my father's house. ⁵² And the name of the second called he Ephraim: For God has caused me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction. ⁵³ And the seven years of plenty, that was in the land of Egypt, were ended. ⁵⁴ And the seven years of famine began to come, according as Joseph had said: and the famine was in all lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. ⁵⁵ And when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread: and Pharaoh said unto all the Egyptians, Go unto Joseph; what he says to you, do. ⁵⁶ And the famine was over all the face of the earth: And Joseph opened all the storehouses, and sold unto the Egyptians; and the famine was severe in the land of Egypt. ⁵⁷ And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph to buy grain; because that the famine was so severe in all lands.

²⁵ How forceful are right words! but what does your arguing prove?

²³ A man has joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it!

¹ The preparations of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD.

¹¹ A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. ¹² As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.

⁴⁶ Then king Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face, and worshiped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an offering and incense unto him. ⁴⁷ The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth it is, that your God is God of gods, and Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing you could reveal this secret. ⁴⁸ Then the king made Daniel a great man, and gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon.

¹⁷ And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. And they marveled at him. ¹⁸ Then came unto him the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying,

³² And the scribe said unto him, Well, Teacher, you have said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he: ³³ And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices. ³⁴ And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said unto him, You are not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that dared ask him any question.

¹⁷ And the king commanded, and they brought great stones, costly stones, and hewn stones, to lay the foundation of the house. ¹⁸ And Solomon’s builders and Hiram’s builders did hew them, and the men of Gebal: so they prepared timber and stones to build the house.

⁷ And the house, when it was being built, was built of stone made ready before it was brought there: so that there was neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was being built.

²⁸ For which of you, intending to build a tower, sits not down first, and counts the cost, whether he has enough to finish it? ²⁹ Lest perhaps, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him, ³⁰ Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

¹⁶ You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

¹ You shall not raise a false report: put not your hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.

⁹ Then answered Doeg the Edomite, who was set over the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. ¹⁰ And he inquired of the LORD for him, and gave him provisions, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.

⁹ And she wrote in the letters, saying, Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people: ¹⁰ And set two men, sons of Belial, before him, to bear witness against him, saying, You did blaspheme God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him, that he may die. ¹¹ And the men of his city, even the elders and the nobles who were the inhabitants in his city, did as Jezebel had sent unto them, and as it was written in the letters which she had sent unto them. ¹² They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people. ¹³ And there came in two men, children of Belial, and sat before him: and the men of Belial witnessed against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did blaspheme God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, so that he died.

³ And the LORD said unto Satan, Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one that fears God, and turns away from evil? and still he holds fast his integrity, although you moved me against him, to destroy him without cause.

⁷ For without cause have they hid for me their net in a pit, which without cause they have dug for my soul.

¹¹ False witnesses did rise up; they laid to my charge things that I knew not.

¹ [To the Chief Musician, a maschil. A Psalm of David, when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, and said unto him, David is come to the house of Ahimelech.] Why boast you yourself in evil, O mighty man? the goodness of God endures continually.

⁵ A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.

⁵ A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall not escape.

⁹ A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaks lies shall perish.

²⁸ A false witness shall perish: but the man that hears speaks constantly.

¹⁸ A man that bears false witness against his neighbor is a club, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.

⁵⁹ Now the chief priests, and elders, and all the council, sought false witness against Jesus, to put him to death; ⁶⁰ But found none: yea, though many false witnesses came, yet found they none. At the last came two false witnesses,

²³ And the governor said, Why, what evil has he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.

²⁵ But this comes to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

²⁵ Therefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbor: for we are members one of another.

⁹ Lie not one to another, seeing that you have put off the old man with his deeds;

⁸ But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and fornicators, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

¹⁵ For outside are dogs, and sorcerers, and fornicators, and murderers, and idolaters, and whosoever loves and makes a lie.

¹¹ Then three thousand men of Judah went to the top of the rock of Etam, and said to Samson, Know you not that the Philistines are rulers over us? what is this that you have done unto us? And he said unto them, As they did unto me, so have I done unto them.

²² And Absalom spoke unto his brother Amnon neither good nor bad: for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar. ²³ And it came to pass after two full years, that Absalom had sheepshearers in Baal-hazor, which is beside Ephraim: and Absalom invited all the king’s sons. ²⁴ And Absalom came to the king, and said, Behold now, your servant has sheepshearers; let the king, I beseech you, and his servants go with your servant. ²⁵ And the king said to Absalom, Nay, my son, let us not all now go, lest we be chargeable unto you. And he pressed him: however he would not go, but blessed him. ²⁶ Then said Absalom, If not, I pray you, let my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said unto him, Why should he go with you? ²⁷ But Absalom pressed him, that he let Amnon and all the king’s sons go with him. ²⁸ Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, Mark you now when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine, and when I say unto you, Strike Amnon; then kill him, fear not: have not I commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant.

²² Say not, I will repay evil; but wait on the LORD, and he shall save you.

²¹ If your enemy is hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he is thirsty, give him water to drink: ²² For you shall heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward you.

³⁹ But I say unto you, That you resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also. ⁴⁰ And if any man will sue you at the law, and take away your coat, let him have your cloak also. ⁴¹ And whosoever shall compel you to go a mile, go with him two. ⁴² Give to him that asks you, and from him that would borrow of you turn not away. ⁴³ You have heard that it has been said, You shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy. ⁴⁴ But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them who despitefully use you, and persecute you;

¹⁷ Recompense to no man evil for evil. Provide things honest in the sight of all men. ¹⁸ If it be possible, as much as lies in you, live peaceably with all men. ¹⁹ Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, says the Lord. ²⁰ Therefore if your enemy hungers, feed him; if he thirsts, give him drink: for in so doing you shall heap coals of fire on his head. ²¹ Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

¹⁵ See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.

⁸ Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.

²⁷ Lo this, we have searched it out, so it is; hear it, and know you it for your good.

¹⁷ I will show you, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;

²⁵ I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his offspring begging bread.

⁴² The righteous shall see it, and rejoice: and all iniquity shall stop its mouth.

⁶ Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: ⁷ Who having no guide, overseer, or ruler, ⁸ Provides her food in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest. ⁹ How long will you sleep, O sluggard? when will you arise out of your sleep? ¹⁰ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ¹¹ So shall your poverty come upon you like a vagabond, and your want like an armed man. ¹² A worthless person, a wicked man, walks with a perverse mouth. ¹³ He winks with his eyes, he signals with his feet, he motions with his fingers; ¹⁴ Perversity is in his heart, he devises evil continually; he sows discord. ¹⁵ Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy. ¹⁶ These six things does the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: ¹⁷ A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, ¹⁸ A heart that devises wicked imaginations, feet that are swift in running to evil, ¹⁹ A false witness that speaks lies, and he that sows discord among brethren.

³² But whosoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding: he that does it destroys his own soul.

¹³ In the lips of him that has understanding wisdom is found: but a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.

¹¹ He that tills his land shall be satisfied with bread: but he that follows vain persons is void of understanding.

¹ So I returned, and considered all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter. ² Therefore I praised the dead who are already dead more than the living who are yet alive. ³ Yea, better is he than both, who has not yet been, who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun. ⁴ Again, I considered all toil, and every skillful work, that for this a man is envied by his neighbor. This is also vanity and grasping after the wind. ⁵ The fool folds his hands together, and eats his own flesh. ⁶ Better is a handful with quietness, than both hands full with toil and grasping for the wind. ⁷ Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun. ⁸ There is one alone, and there is not a second; yea, he has neither child nor brother: yet is there no end of all his labor; neither is his eye satisfied with riches; neither says he, For whom do I labor, and deprive my soul of good? This is also vanity, yea, it is a heavy travail.

¹⁵ All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongs his life in his wickedness.

⁹ All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time in which one man rules over another to his own hurt. ¹⁰ And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the holy place, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity. ¹¹ Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.

¹⁷ And unto Adam he said, Because you have listened unto the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree, of which I commanded you, saying, You shall not eat of it: cursed is the ground for your sake; in sorrow shall you eat of it all the days of your life; ¹⁸ Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to you; and you shall eat the plants of the field; ¹⁹ In the sweat of your face shall you eat bread, till you return unto the ground; for out of it were you taken: for dust you are, and unto dust shall you return.

⁴⁰ Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and weeds instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

²³ The fear of the LORD leads to life: and he that has it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.

⁴ The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing.

¹³ The slothful man says, There is a lion outside, I shall be slain in the streets.

²¹ For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

¹⁸ By much slothfulness the building decays; and through idleness of the hands the house leaks.

⁵ And now; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away its hedge, and it shall be eaten up; and break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down:

³ For thus says the LORD to the men of Judah and Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns.

⁷ And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them:

²² He also that received seed among the thorns is he that hears the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becomes unfruitful.

⁸ But that which bears thorns and briars is worthless, and is near unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.

¹¹ And all Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall do no more any such wickedness as this is among you.

²¹ And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, so that he dies: so shall you put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

²⁹ O that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end!

¹⁷ What is man, that you should magnify him? and that you should set your heart upon him?

⁴ Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.

¹⁹ But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

⁵¹ And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.

⁶ Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

¹¹ Now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.

⁵ I will therefore put you in remembrance, though you once knew this, how that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not. ⁶ And the angels who kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. ⁷ Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after unnatural lust, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.

¹¹ And this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.

¹⁴ Therefore he says, Awake you that sleep, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light.

⁶ Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober. ⁷ For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that are drunk are drunk in the night. ⁸ But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation.

⁴ He becomes poor who has a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent makes rich.

⁴ The soul of the sluggard desires, and has nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made rich.
