¹ When you sit to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before you: ² And put a knife to your throat, if you are a man given to appetite. ³ Be not desirous of his delicacies: for they are deceitful food. ⁴ Labor not to be rich: cease from your own wisdom. ⁵ Will you set your eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven. ⁶ Eat not the bread of him that is stingy, neither desire you his delicacies: ⁷ For as he thinks in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, says he to you; but his heart is not with you. ⁸ The morsel which you have eaten shall you vomit up, and waste your sweet words. ⁹ Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of your words. ¹⁰ Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless: ¹¹ For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with you. ¹² Apply your heart unto instruction, and your ears to the words of knowledge. ¹³ Withhold not correction from the child: for if you beat him with a rod, he shall not die. ¹⁴ You shall beat him with the rod, and shall deliver his soul from sheol. ¹⁵ My son, if your heart is wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine. ¹⁶ Yea, my inmost being shall rejoice, when your lips speak right things. ¹⁷ Let not your heart envy sinners: but be in the fear of the LORD all the day long. ¹⁸ For surely there is a future hope; and your expectation shall not be cut off. ¹⁹ Hear you, my son, and be wise, and guide your heart in the way. ²⁰ Be not among winebibbers; among gluttonous eaters of meat: ²¹ For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags. ²² Hearken unto your father that begat you, and despise not your mother when she is old. ²³ Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding. ²⁴ The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begets a wise child shall have joy in him. ²⁵ Your father and your mother shall be glad, and she that bore you shall rejoice. ²⁶ My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways. ²⁷ For a harlot is a deep ditch; and a seductress is a narrow well. ²⁸ She also lies in wait as for a prey, and increases the unfaithful among men. ²⁹ Who has woe? who has sorrow? who has contentions? who has babbling? who has wounds without cause? who has redness of eyes? ³⁰ They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. ³¹ Look not you upon the wine when it is red, when it gives its color in the cup, when it moves itself aright. ³² At the last it bites like a serpent, and stings like an adder. ³³ Your eyes shall behold strange things, and your heart shall utter perverse things. ³⁴ Yea, you shall be as he that lies down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lies upon the top of a mast. ³⁵ They have stricken me, you shall say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

³² And they served him by himself, and them by themselves, and for the Egyptians, who did eat with him, by themselves: because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians. ³³ And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth: and the men marveled one at another. ³⁴ And he took and sent portions unto them from before him: but Benjamin's portion was five times as much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were merry with him.

¹² These are spots in your love feasts, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about by winds; trees whose fruit withers, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;

⁸ Therefore if your hand or your foot offend you, cut them off, and cast them from you: it is better for you to enter into life lame or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire. ⁹ And if your eye offend you, pluck it out, and cast it from you: it is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.

²⁷ But I roughly treat my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be disqualified.

⁴ Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to practice wicked works with men that work iniquity: and let me not eat of their delicacies.

⁶ Eat not the bread of him that is stingy, neither desire you his delicacies:

⁸ But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's food, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

³⁴ And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be weighed down with carousing, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.

²² That you put off concerning the former way of life the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

⁵ Trust in the LORD with all your heart; and lean not unto your own understanding.

⁷ Be not wise in your own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.

²⁷ He that is greedy of gain troubles his own house; but he that hates bribes shall live.

²⁷ Labor not for the food which perishes, but for that food which endures unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for on him has God the Father set his seal.

²⁵ For I would not, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles comes in.

¹⁶ Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.

⁸ And having food and clothing let us be with these things content. ⁹ But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which plunge men into destruction and perdition. ¹⁰ For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

⁵ Let your conduct be without covetousness; and be content with such things as you have: for he has said, I will never leave you, nor forsake you.

³⁶ And Jacob their father said unto them, Me have you bereaved of my children: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and you will take Benjamin away: all these things are against me.

¹⁴ And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys feeding beside them: ¹⁵ And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone am escaped to tell you. ¹⁶ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God has fallen from heaven, and has burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I alone am escaped to tell you. ¹⁷ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone am escaped to tell you.

⁶ Surely every man walks in a vain show: surely they are in turmoil in vain: he heaps up riches, and knows not who shall gather them.

³⁶ Incline my heart unto your testimonies, and not to covetousness. ³⁷ Turn away my eyes from beholding vanity; and revive me in your way.

²⁴ For riches are not forever: and does the crown endure to every generation?

² Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

¹³ There is a great evil which I have seen under the sun, namely, riches kept by their owners to their hurt. ¹⁴ But those riches are lost by a bad venture: when he begets a son, there is nothing in his hand.

² Why do you spend money for that which is not bread? and your labor for that which satisfies not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat you that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in richness.

¹⁷ But your eyes and your heart are for nothing but for your covetousness, and for shedding innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it.

²⁹ But this I say, brethren, the time is short: it remains, that both they that have wives be as though they had none; ³⁰ And they that weep, as though they wept not; and they that rejoice, as though they rejoiced not; and they that buy, as though they possessed not; ³¹ And they that use this world, as not abusing it: for the fashion of this world passes away.

¹⁷ Charge them that are rich in this present age, that they be not haughty, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy;

¹ Come now, you rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. ² Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten.

¹⁶ For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

⁹ Beware that there be not a thought in your wicked heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and your eye be evil against your poor brother, and you give him nothing; and he cries unto the LORD against you, and it be sin in you.

⁵⁶ The gentle and refined woman among you, who would not venture to set the sole of her foot upon the ground because of her gentleness and refinement, her eye shall show no compassion toward the husband of her bosom, and toward her son, and toward her daughter,

⁹ He that has a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he gives of his bread to the poor.

²² He that hastens to be rich has an evil eye, and considers not that poverty shall come upon him.

⁸ But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's food, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. ⁹ Now God had brought Daniel into favor and kindness with the prince of the eunuchs. ¹⁰ And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse looking than the young men who are of your age? then shall you make me endanger my head to the king.

¹⁵ Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with my own? Is your eye evil, because I am good?

²² Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

¹⁵ And she said unto him, How can you say, I love you, when your heart is not with me? you have mocked me these three times, and have not told me where your great strength lies.

²⁶ Then said Absalom, If not, I pray you, let my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said unto him, Why should he go with you? ²⁷ But Absalom pressed him, that he let Amnon and all the king’s sons go with him. ²⁸ Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, Mark you now when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine, and when I say unto you, Strike Amnon; then kill him, fear not: have not I commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant.

² They speak vanity every one with his neighbor: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.

²¹ The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart: his words were softer than oil, yet were they drawn swords.

²² The desire of a man is his kindness: and a poor man is better than a liar.

³ And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemes. ⁴ And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Why think you evil in your hearts?

³⁹ Now when the Pharisee who had bidden him saw it, he spoke within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that touches him: for she is a sinner.

³⁷ And as he spoke, a certain Pharisee besought him to dine with him: and he went in, and sat down to eat. ³⁸ And when the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that he had not first washed before dinner. ³⁹ And the Lord said unto him, Now do you Pharisees make clean the outside of the cup and the platter; but your inward part is full of extortion and wickedness. ⁴⁰ You fools, did not he that made that which is outside make that which is within also? ⁴¹ But rather give alms of such things as you have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you. ⁴² But woe unto you, Pharisees! for you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass over justice and the love of God: these ought you to have done, and not to leave the other undone. ⁴³ Woe unto you, Pharisees! for you love the best seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets. ⁴⁴ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you are as graves which are not seen, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them. ⁴⁵ Then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Teacher, thus saying you reproach us also. ⁴⁶ And he said, Woe unto you also, you lawyers! for you load men with burdens hard to be borne, and you yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers. ⁴⁷ Woe unto you! for you build the sepulchers of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. ⁴⁸ Truly you bear witness that you consent to the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and you build their sepulchers. ⁴⁹ Therefore also said the wisdom of God, I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they shall slay and persecute: ⁵⁰ That the blood of all the prophets, which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation; ⁵¹ From the blood of Abel unto the blood of Zachariah, who perished between the altar and the temple: verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation. ⁵² Woe unto you, lawyers! for you have taken away the key of knowledge: you entered not in yourselves, and them that were entering in you hindered. ⁵³ And as he said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to oppose him vehemently, and to provoke him to speak of many things: ⁵⁴ Lying in wait for him, and seeking to catch something from his mouth, that they might accuse him.

⁷ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

⁷ He that reproves a scoffer gets for himself shame: and he that rebukes a wicked man gets himself injury. ⁸ Reprove not a scoffer, lest he hate you: rebuke a wise man, and he will love you.

⁴ Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest you also be like unto him. ⁵ Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes.

²¹ But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king's commandment was, saying, Answer him not.

⁶ Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and tear you.

¹⁴ And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him.

⁵² Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and you say, If a man keeps my saying, he shall never taste of death.

³⁰ The man answered and said unto them, Why, in this is a marvelous thing, that you know not from where he is, and yet he has opened my eyes. ³¹ Now we know that God hears not sinners: but if any man be a worshiper of God, and does his will, him he hears. ³² Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind. ³³ If this man were not of God, he could do nothing. ³⁴ They answered and said unto him, You were altogether born in sins, and do you teach us? And they cast him out.

⁴⁰ And some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?

²⁰ And many of them said, He has a demon, and is mad; why hear you him?

⁴⁵ But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spoke against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. ⁴⁶ Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing you put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.

¹⁸ Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoics, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? Others, He seems to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

³² And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear you again of this matter.

²⁵ And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after Paul had spoken one word, Well spoke the Holy Spirit by Isaiah the prophet unto our fathers, ²⁶ Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing you shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing you shall see, and not perceive: ²⁷ For the heart of this people is stubborn, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. ²⁸ Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it.

²¹ For since in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. ²² For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: ²³ But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling block, and unto the Greeks foolishness; ²⁴ But unto them who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

¹⁰ We are fools for Christ's sake, but you are wise in Christ; we are weak, but you are strong; you are honorable, but we are despised. ¹¹ Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwelling place; ¹² And labor, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure it: ¹³ Being defamed, we entreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the trash of all things unto this day.

¹⁴ You shall not remove your neighbor's landmark, which the men of old time have set, in your inheritance which you shall inherit in the land that the LORD your God gives you to possess it.

¹⁷ Cursed be he that removes his neighbor’s landmark. And all the people shall say, Amen.

²⁷ Yea, you overwhelm the fatherless, and you dig a pit for your friend.

⁹ You have sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

² Some remove the landmarks; they violently take away flocks, and feed on them. ³ They drive away the donkey of the fatherless, they take the widow’s ox for a pledge.

⁹ They pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge from the poor.

²¹ If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw I had help in the gate: ²² Then let my arm fall from my shoulder blade, and my arm be broken from its socket. ²³ For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his majesty I could not endure.

⁶ They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless.

²⁸ Remove not the ancient landmark, which your fathers have set.

⁵ For if you thoroughly amend your ways and your doings; if you thoroughly execute justice between a man and his neighbor;

³ Thus says the LORD; Execute justice and righteousness, and deliver the plundered out of the hand of the oppressor: and do no wrong, do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless, nor the widow, neither shed innocent blood in this place.

¹⁰ And oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, the sojourner, nor the poor; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart.

⁵ And I will come near to you for judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the sojourner from his right, and fear not me, says the LORD of hosts.

²⁷ Pure religion and undefiled before God the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

²² You shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child. ²³ If you afflict them in any way, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry; ²⁴ And my wrath shall grow hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.

¹⁹ Cursed be he that perverts the justice due the stranger, fatherless, and widow. And all the people shall say, Amen.

²⁵ For I know that my redeemer lives, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:

⁵ For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, says the LORD; I will set him in safety from him that sneers at him.

²³ For the LORD will plead their cause, and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them.

³³ Thus says the LORD of hosts; The children of Israel and the children of Judah were oppressed together: and all that took them captives held them fast; they refused to let them go. ³⁴ Their Redeemer is strong; the LORD of hosts is his name: he shall thoroughly plead their cause, that he may give rest to the land, but unrest to the inhabitants of Babylon.

³⁶ Therefore thus says the LORD; Behold, I will plead your cause, and take vengeance for you; and I will dry up her sea, and make her springs dry.

² So that you incline your ear unto wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; ³ Yea, if you cry after knowledge, and lift up your voice for understanding; ⁴ If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hid treasures; ⁵ Then shall you understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. ⁶ For the LORD gives wisdom: out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.

¹ My son, be attentive to my wisdom, and incline your ear to my understanding: ² That you may preserve discretion, and that your lips may keep knowledge.

¹⁷ Bow down your ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply your heart unto my knowledge.

¹⁹ Hear you, my son, and be wise, and guide your heart in the way.

³¹ And they come unto you as the people comes, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear your words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goes after their covetousness.

⁵² Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe who is instructed concerning the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is a householder, who brings forth out of his treasure things new and old.

²¹ Therefore put away all filthiness and extreme wickedness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. ²² But be you doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. ²³ For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a mirror: ²⁴ For he beholds himself, and goes his way, and immediately forgets what manner of man he was. ²⁵ But whoever looks into the perfect law of liberty, and continues in it, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

²⁴ He that spares his rod hates his son: but he that loves him chastens him early.

¹⁸ Chasten your son while there is hope, and let not your soul spare for his crying.

¹⁵ The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself brings his mother to shame.

¹⁷ Correct your son, and he shall give you rest; yea, he shall give delight unto your soul.

¹⁵ Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

⁵ To deliver such a one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

³² But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.

¹⁰ My son, if sinners entice you, consent not.

¹⁷ The LORD your God in the midst of you is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over you with joy; he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.

² And, behold, they brought to him a man sick, a paralytic, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the paralytic; Son, be of good cheer; your sins be forgiven you.

²³ And bring here the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry: ²⁴ For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.

³² It was right that we should make merry, and be glad: for this your brother was dead, and is alive again; and was lost, and is found.

¹¹ These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

⁵ Then Jesus said unto them, Children, have you any fish? They answered him, No.

¹⁹ For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even you in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming? ²⁰ For you are our glory and joy.

⁸ For now we live, if you stand fast in the Lord. ⁹ For what thanks can we render to God again for you, for all the joy with which we joy for your sakes before our God;

¹ My little children, these things write I unto you, that you sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

⁴ I rejoiced greatly that I found some of your children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father.

³ For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in you, even as you walk in the truth. ⁴ I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.

⁶ Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and from the opening of my lips shall come right things.

²⁹ Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

⁴ Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not fitting: but rather giving of thanks.

⁴ That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak.

² For in many things we all offend. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

³ For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. ⁴ For there are no pains in their death: but their strength is firm. ⁵ They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men. ⁶ Therefore pride surrounds them as a chain; violence covers them as a garment. ⁷ Their eyes stand out with abundance: they have more than heart could wish.

¹⁰ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endures forever.

³¹ Envy you not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.

¹⁶ Better is little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure with trouble.

¹ Be not envious against evil men, neither desire to be with them.

¹⁴ Happy is the man that is reverent always: but he that hardens his heart shall fall into calamity.

⁷ For in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also many vanities: but you fear God.

¹³ Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. ¹⁴ For God shall bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

³¹ Then had the churches rest throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, were multiplied.

¹ Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

¹⁷ And if you call on the Father, who without respect of persons judges according to every man's work, pass the time of your exile here in fear:

¹⁸ For the needy shall not always be forgotten: the expectation of the poor shall not perish forever.

³⁷ Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace.

¹⁴ So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto your soul: when you have found it, then there shall be a reward, and your hope shall not be cut off.

²⁰ For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

¹¹ For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.

²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and you are tormented.

²¹ What fruit had you then in those things of which you are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. ²² But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, you have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

²⁰ According to my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death.

³⁵ Cast not away therefore your confidence, which has great recompense of reward.

¹⁰ Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of your life shall be many. ¹¹ I have taught you in the way of wisdom; I have led you in right paths. ¹² When you go, your steps shall not be hindered; and when you run, you shall not stumble. ¹³ Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is your life. ¹⁴ Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. ¹⁵ Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away. ¹⁶ For they sleep not, unless they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause someone to fall. ¹⁷ For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence. ¹⁸ But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shines more and more unto the perfect day. ¹⁹ The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble. ²⁰ My son, attend to my words; incline your ear unto my sayings. ²¹ Let them not depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart. ²² For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh. ²³ Keep your heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

⁶ Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:

⁶ Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.

¹² Apply your heart unto instruction, and your ears to the words of knowledge.

²⁶ My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways.

¹ Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.

²⁹ Who has woe? who has sorrow? who has contentions? who has babbling? who has wounds without cause? who has redness of eyes? ³⁰ They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine. ³¹ Look not you upon the wine when it is red, when it gives its color in the cup, when it moves itself aright. ³² At the last it bites like a serpent, and stings like an adder. ³³ Your eyes shall behold strange things, and your heart shall utter perverse things. ³⁴ Yea, you shall be as he that lies down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lies upon the top of a mast. ³⁵ They have stricken me, you shall say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

⁷ Whosoever keeps the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of gluttonous men shames his father.

⁶ Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts. ⁷ Let him drink, and forget his poverty, and remember his misery no more.

¹¹ Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink; that continue until night, till wine inflames them!

²² Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mix strong drink:

¹³ But instead, joy and gladness, slaying oxen, and killing sheep, eating meat, and drinking wine: let us eat and drink; for tomorrow we shall die.

⁴⁹ And shall begin to smite his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunkards;

¹³ And not many days later the younger son gathered everything together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.

¹⁹ There was a certain rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen, and feasted sumptuously every day:

¹³ Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and wantonness, not in strife and envying.

¹⁸ And be not drunk with wine, in which is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

³ For the time past of our life will suffice us to have done the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in licentiousness, lusts, excess of wine, reveling, carousing, and abominable idolatries: ⁴ In which they think it strange that you run not with them to the same excess of dissipation, speaking evil of you:

²⁰ And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.

⁹ How long will you sleep, O sluggard? when will you arise out of your sleep? ¹⁰ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ¹¹ So shall your poverty come upon you like a vagabond, and your want like an armed man.

¹⁵ Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger.

¹⁷ He that loves pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loves wine and oil shall not be rich.

³⁰ I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; ³¹ And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and weeds had covered its face, and its stone wall was broken down. ³² Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction. ³³ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: ³⁴ So shall your poverty come like a robber; and your want like an armed man.

¹ Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, whose glorious beauty is a fading flower, which is on the head of the rich valleys of them that are overcome with wine! ² Behold, the Lord has a mighty and strong one, which like a tempest of hail and a destroying storm, like a flood of mighty waters overflowing, shall cast down to the earth with his hand. ³ The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim, shall be trodden under foot:

⁵ Awake, you drunkards, and weep; and howl, all you drinkers of wine, because of the new wine, for it is cut off from your mouth.

¹¹ But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such a one no not to eat.

¹⁰ Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.

²¹ Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revelings, and such like: of which I tell you beforehand, as I have also told you in time past, that they who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

³ You shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and keep my sabbaths: I am the LORD your God.

¹⁸ If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son, who will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them: ¹⁹ Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; ²⁰ And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. ²¹ And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, so that he dies: so shall you put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

¹⁶ Cursed be he that dishonors his father or his mother. And all the people shall say, Amen.

⁸ My son, hear the instruction of your father, and forsake not the law of your mother:

²⁰ My son, keep your father's commandment, and forsake not the law of your mother:

¹¹ There is a generation that curses their father, and does not bless their mother.

¹⁷ The eye that mocks at his father, and despises to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young vultures shall eat it.

⁴ For God commanded, saying, Honor your father and mother: and, He that curses father or mother, let him die the death. ⁵ But you say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift devoted to God, whatsoever you might have received from me; ⁶ And honors not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have you made the commandment of God void by your tradition.

¹⁰ For Moses said, Honor your father and your mother; and, Whoever curses father or mother, let him die the death:

²⁶ When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he said unto his mother, Woman, behold your son! ²⁷ Then said he to the disciple, Behold your mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

¹ Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. ² Honor your father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise;

¹² But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding? ¹³ Man knows not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living. ¹⁴ The deep says, It is not in me: and the sea says, It is not with me. ¹⁵ It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof. ¹⁶ It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire. ¹⁷ The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold. ¹⁸ No mention shall be made of coral, or of crystal: for the price of wisdom is above rubies. ¹⁹ The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.

⁷² The law of your mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver pieces.

¹²⁷ Therefore I love your commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold.

² So that you incline your ear unto wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; ³ Yea, if you cry after knowledge, and lift up your voice for understanding; ⁴ If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hid treasures;

⁵ Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither turn away from the words of my mouth. ⁶ Forsake her not, and she shall preserve you: love her, and she shall keep you. ⁷ Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all your getting get understanding.

¹⁶ How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!

¹⁶ Why is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he has no heart for it?

¹⁵ The heart of the prudent gets knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.

¹ Ho, everyone that thirsts, come you to the waters, and he that has no money; come you, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

⁴⁴ Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto treasure hid in a field; which when a man has found, he hides, and for joy thereof goes and sells all that he has, and buys that field.

⁴⁶ Who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had, and bought it.

²⁶ For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

²³ Except that the Holy Spirit witnesses in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions await me.

⁷ But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. ⁸ Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but rubbish, that I may win Christ,

²⁶ Esteeming the reproach of the Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he looked for the recompense of the reward.

¹⁸ I counsel you to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that you may be rich; and white clothing, that you may be clothed, and that the shame of your nakedness does not appear; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.

¹¹ And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto death.

⁴⁸ And also thus said the king, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, who has given one to sit on my throne this day, my eyes even seeing it.

¹ Now the days of David drew near that he should die; and he charged Solomon his son, saying, ² I go the way of all the earth: be strong therefore, and show yourself a man; ³ And keep the charge of the LORD your God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do, and wherever you turn yourself:

⁹ Now therefore hold him not guiltless: for you are a wise man, and know what you ought to do unto him; but his gray head bring you down to the grave with blood.

¹⁵ My son, if your heart is wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine. ¹⁶ Yea, my inmost being shall rejoice, when your lips speak right things.

¹⁹ And who knows whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labor in which I have labored, and in which I have shown myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.

⁹ Yet for love's sake I rather beseech you, being such a one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.

²⁰ Yea, brother, let me have joy of you in the Lord: refresh my heart in the Lord.

⁹ And Jabez was more honorable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bore him with sorrow. ¹⁰ And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that you would bless me indeed, and enlarge my border, and that your hand might be with me, and that you would keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.

²⁵ A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bore him.

³¹ And, behold, you shall conceive in your womb, and bring forth a son, and shall call his name JESUS. ³² He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: ³³ And he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

⁴⁰ And entered into the house of Zachariah, and greeted Elizabeth. ⁴¹ And it came to pass, that, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit: ⁴² And she spoke out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. ⁴³ And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? ⁴⁴ For, lo, as soon as the voice of your greeting sounded in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. ⁴⁵ And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord. ⁴⁶ And Mary said, My soul does magnify the Lord, ⁴⁷ And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.

⁵⁸ And her neighbors and her cousins heard how the Lord had showed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.

²⁷ And it came to pass, as he spoke these things, a certain woman of the crowd lifted up her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts which you have nursed. ²⁸ But he said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

⁵ And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might.

⁴³ Whoever is wise, and will observe these things, even they shall understand the lovingkindness of the LORD.

² Blessed are they that keep his testimonies, and that seek him with the whole heart.

⁹ [Beth] How shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to your word. ¹⁰ With my whole heart have I sought you: O let me not wander from your commandments. ¹¹ Your word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

¹ My son, forget not my law; but let your heart keep my commandments:

⁴ He taught me also, and said unto me, Let your heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.

²³ Keep your heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

²⁵ Let your eyes look directly forward, and let your eyelids look straight before you. ²⁶ Ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established. ²⁷ Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove your foot from evil.

⁹ Who is wise, and he shall understand these things? prudent, and he shall know them? for the ways of the LORD are right, and the just shall walk in them: but the transgressors shall stumble in them.

³⁷ He that loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. ³⁸ And he that takes not his cross, and follows after me, is not worthy of me.

²⁶ If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

¹⁴ For the love of Christ constrains us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: ¹⁵ And that he died for all, that they who live should no longer live unto themselves, but unto him who died for them, and rose again.

⁵ And this they did, not as we expected, but first gave their own selves to the Lord, and unto us by the will of God.

¹⁷ That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love,

¹⁹ We have also a more sure word of prophecy; to which you do well that you take heed, as unto a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:

¹⁴ The mouth of immoral women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the LORD shall fall therein.

¹ And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit harlotry with the daughters of Moab.

⁴ And it came to pass afterward, that he loved a woman in the valley of Sorek, whose name was Delilah. ⁵ And the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and said unto her, Entice him, and see where his great strength lies, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him: and we will all give you eleven hundred pieces of silver. ⁶ And Delilah said to Samson, Tell me, I pray you, where your great strength lies, and with what you might be bound to afflict you. ⁷ And Samson said unto her, If they bind me with seven green cords that were never dried, then shall I be weak, and be as another man. ⁸ Then the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven green cords which had not been dried, and she bound him with them. ⁹ Now there were men lying in wait, abiding with her in the chamber. And she said unto him, The Philistines be upon you, Samson. And he broke the cords, as a thread of yarn is broken when it touches the fire. So his strength was not known. ¹⁰ And Delilah said unto Samson, Behold, you have mocked me, and told me lies: now tell me, I pray you, how you might be bound. ¹¹ And he said unto her, If they bind me securely with new ropes that never were used, then shall I be weak, and be as another man. ¹² Delilah therefore took new ropes, and bound him with them, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon you, Samson. And there were men lying in wait abiding in the chamber. And he broke them from off his arms like a thread. ¹³ And Delilah said unto Samson, Until now you have mocked me, and told me lies: tell me how you might be bound. And he said unto her, If you weave the seven locks of my head with the web. ¹⁴ And she fastened it with the pin, and said unto him, The Philistines be upon you, Samson. And he awaked out of his sleep, and went away with the pin of the beam, and with the web. ¹⁵ And she said unto him, How can you say, I love you, when your heart is not with me? you have mocked me these three times, and have not told me where your great strength lies. ¹⁶ And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed unto death; ¹⁷ That he told her all his heart, and said unto her, There has not come a razor upon my head; for I have been a Nazarite unto God from my mother's womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man. ¹⁸ And when Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, Come up this once, for he has showed me all his heart. Then the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and brought money in their hand. ¹⁹ And she made him sleep upon her knees; and she called for a man, and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head; and she began to afflict him, and his strength went from him. ²⁰ And she said, The Philistines be upon you, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he knew not that the LORD was departed from him. ²¹ But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of bronze; and he did grind in the prison house. ²² However the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaven.

¹⁶ To deliver you from the immoral woman, even from the seductress who flatters with her words; ¹⁷ Who forsakes the companion of her youth, and forgets the covenant of her God. ¹⁸ For her house leads unto death, and her paths unto the dead. ¹⁹ None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life.

¹² Now is she outside, now in the streets, and lies in wait at every corner.)

²² He goes after her immediately, as an ox goes to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks; ²³ Till an arrow strikes through his liver; as a bird hastens to the snare, and knows not that it is for his life. ²⁴ Hearken unto me now therefore, O you children, and attend to the words of my mouth. ²⁵ Let not your heart turn aside to her ways, go not astray in her paths. ²⁶ For she has cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her. ²⁷ Her house is the way to sheol, going down to the chambers of death.

¹⁸ But he knows not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of the grave.

²⁶ And I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands are fetters: whosoever pleases God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.

² Lift up your eyes unto the high places, and see where you have not been lain with. In the ways have you sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and you have polluted the land with your harlotries and with your wickedness.

¹¹ Harlotry and wine and new wine take away the heart.

⁸ Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.

¹ And there came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come here; I will show unto you the judgment of the great harlot that sits upon many waters: ² With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.

¹² His eyes shall be red with wine, and his teeth white with milk.

³⁶ And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very drunk: therefore she told him nothing, little or much, until the morning light. ³⁷ But it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone.

²⁸ Now Absalom had commanded his servants, saying, Mark you now when Amnon’s heart is merry with wine, and when I say unto you, Strike Amnon; then kill him, fear not: have not I commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant.

¹⁶ And they went out at noon. But Ben-hadad was drinking himself drunk in the pavilions, he and the kings, the thirty and two kings that helped him. ¹⁷ And the young men of the princes of the provinces went out first; and Ben-hadad sent out, and they told him, saying, There are men come out of Samaria. ¹⁸ And he said, If they be come out for peace, take them alive; or if they be come out for war, take them alive. ¹⁹ So these young men of the princes of the provinces came out of the city, and the army which followed them. ²⁰ And they slew every one his man: and the Syrians fled; and Israel pursued them: and Ben-hadad the king of Syria escaped on a horse with the horsemen. ²¹ And the king of Israel went out, and struck the horses and chariots, and slew the Syrians with a great slaughter. ²² And the prophet came to the king of Israel, and said unto him, Go, strengthen yourself, and consider, and see what you should do: for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against you.

²¹ For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

⁷ But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; the priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, they are swallowed up by wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in judgment. ⁸ For all tables are full of vomit and filthiness, so that there is no place clean.

¹⁰ For while they are entangled together as thorns, and while they are drunk as drunkards, they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry.

⁴⁹ And shall begin to smite his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunkards; ⁵⁰ The lord of that servant shall come in a day when he looks not for him, and in an hour that he is not aware of,

⁴⁵ But if that servant says in his heart, My lord delays his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidservants, and to eat and drink, and to be drunk; ⁴⁶ The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looks not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in pieces, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.

²¹ And he drank of the wine, and was drunk; and he was uncovered within his tent.

⁸ For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup, and the wine is red; it is fully mixed; and he pours out of the same: but the dregs thereof, all the wicked of the earth shall drain them down, and drink them.

² She has slaughtered her beasts; she has mixed her wine; she has also furnished her table.

⁶ That drink wine in bowls, and anoint yourselves with the chief ointments: but they are not grieved for the affliction of Joseph.

² And it came to pass in an evening, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.

¹ Therefore, Job, I pray you, hear my speeches, and hearken to all my words.

³⁷ Turn away my eyes from beholding vanity; and revive me in your way.

²⁵ Lust not after her beauty in your heart; neither let her allure you with her eyelids.

⁸ He that digs a pit shall fall into it; and whosoever breaks through a wall, a serpent shall bite him.

³ The crown of pride, the drunkards of Ephraim, shall be trodden under foot:

⁵ They hatch viper’s eggs, and weave the spider's web: he that eats of their eggs dies, and from that which is crushed a viper breaks out.

³¹ The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their own power; and my people love to have it so: and what will you do in the end?

¹⁷ For, behold, I will send serpents, adders, among you, which will not be charmed, and they shall bite you, says the LORD.

¹⁹ As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent bit him.

³ And though they hide themselves on the top of Carmel, I will search and take them from there; and though they are hidden from my sight in the bottom of the sea, there will I command the serpent, and it shall bite them:

²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and you are tormented. ²⁶ And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they who would pass from here to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from there.

¹² They that sit in the gate speak against me; and I was the song of the drunkards.

¹² To deliver you from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaks perverse things;

⁵ Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the justice of any of the afflicted.

⁴ They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of bronze, of iron, of wood, and of stone.

³³ And blessed be your advice, and blessed be you, who has kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with my own hand. ³⁴ For in very deed, as the LORD God of Israel lives, who has kept me back from hurting you, unless you had hastened and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light any remaining males. ³⁵ So David received of her hand that which she had brought him, and said unto her, Go up in peace to your house; see, I have hearkened to your voice, and have accepted your person. ³⁶ And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very drunk: therefore she told him nothing, little or much, until the morning light. ³⁷ But it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. ³⁸ And it came to pass about ten days later, that the LORD struck Nabal, that he died.

¹⁶ And when he had brought him down, behold, they were spread abroad upon all the earth, eating and drinking, and dancing, because of all the great spoil that they had taken out of the land of the Philistines, and out of the land of Judah. ¹⁷ And David struck them from the twilight even unto the evening of the next day: and there escaped not a man of them, except four hundred young men, who rode upon camels, and fled.

⁹ And his servant Zimri, captain of half his chariots, conspired against him, as he was in Tirzah, drinking himself drunk in the house of Arza steward of his house in Tirzah.

³⁸ For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark,

¹⁹ And it comes to pass, when he hears the words of this curse, that he blesses himself in his heart, saying, I shall have peace, though I walk in the imagination of my heart, to add drunkenness to thirst:

¹¹ As a dog returns to his vomit, so a fool returns to his folly.

²² Though you should crush a fool in a mortar among grain with a pestle, yet will not his foolishness depart from him.

¹² Come you, they say, I will bring wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and tomorrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant.

³ O LORD, are not your eyes upon the truth? you have stricken them, but they have not grieved; you have consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.

¹⁸ I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; You have chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke: restore me, and I shall return; for you are the LORD my God.

³² If after the manner of men I have fought with beasts at Ephesus, what is the gain to me, if the dead rise not? let us eat and drink; for tomorrow we die. ³³ Be not deceived: evil companions corrupt good morals. ³⁴ Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.

¹⁹ Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto licentiousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

²² But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog has turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.
