¹⁴ The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness; but a wounded spirit who can bear?

²⁰ Then Job arose, and tore his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshiped, ²¹ And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return there: the LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.

⁷ So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and struck Job with painful boils from the sole of his foot unto the crown of his head. ⁸ And he took himself a potsherd to scrape himself with; and he sat down among the ashes. ⁹ Then said his wife unto him, Do you still retain your integrity? curse God, and die. ¹⁰ But he said unto her, You speak as one of the foolish women speaks. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison thereof drinks up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.

¹⁴ Then you scare me with dreams, and terrify me through visions: ¹⁵ So that my soul chooses strangling, and death rather than my life.

¹⁵ If I am wicked, woe unto me; and if I am righteous, yet can I not lift up my head. I am full of disgrace; therefore see my affliction; ¹⁶ For it increases. You hunt me as a fierce lion: and again you show yourself awesome against me. ¹⁷ You renew your witnesses against me, and increase your indignation upon me; changes and war are ever with me.

⁹ What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise you? shall it declare your truth? ¹⁰ Hear, O LORD, and have mercy upon me: LORD, be my helper.

³ When I kept silence, my bones grew old through my groaning all the day long. ⁴ For day and night your hand was heavy upon me: my strength is turned into the drought of summer. Selah.

² For your arrows stick fast in me, and your hand presses me down. ³ There is no soundness in my flesh because of your anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin. ⁴ For my iniquities are gone over my head: as a heavy burden they are too heavy for me.

¹⁰ As with a sword in my bones, my enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is your God? ¹¹ Why are you cast down, O my soul? and why are you disturbed within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God.

³ Because of the voice of the enemy, because of the oppression of the wicked: for they cast iniquity upon me, and in wrath they hate me.

⁵ Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror has overwhelmed me.

² In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my sore ran in the night, and ceased not: my soul refused to be comforted. ³ I remembered God, and was troubled: I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed. Selah.

¹⁴ LORD, why cast you off my soul? why hide you your face from me? ¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: while I suffer your terrors I am distracted. ¹⁶ Your fierce anger goes over me; your terrors have cut me off.

²² For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.

³ He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

¹³ A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.

²² A merry heart does good like a medicine: but a broken spirit dries the bones.

³³ And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed, and to be very troubled; ³⁴ And said unto them, My soul is exceedingly sorrowful unto death: tarry you here, and watch.

³ And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation works patience; ⁴ And patience, experience; and experience, hope: ⁵ And hope makes not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who is given unto us.

³⁵ Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? ³⁶ As it is written, For your sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. ³⁷ Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

¹² For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have conducted ourselves in the world, and more abundantly toward you.

⁷ So that instead you ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with too much sorrow.

⁹ And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for you: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather boast in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. ¹⁰ Therefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.

² My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials;

⁶ In which you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you are in heaviness through manifold trials:
