¹ The preparations of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD. ² All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weighs the spirits. ³ Commit your works unto the LORD, and your thoughts shall be established. ⁴ The LORD has made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil. ⁵ Everyone that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD: though they join hand in hand, none shall be unpunished. ⁶ By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil. ⁷ When a man's ways please the LORD, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him. ⁸ Better is a little with righteousness than great revenues without justice. ⁹ A man's heart plans his way: but the LORD directs his steps. ¹⁰ A divine sentence is in the lips of the king: his mouth transgresses not in judgment. ¹¹ A just weight and balance are the LORD's: all the weights in the bag are his work. ¹² It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness: for the throne is established by righteousness. ¹³ Righteous lips are the delight of kings; and they love him that speaks what is right. ¹⁴ The wrath of a king is as messengers of death: but a wise man will appease it. ¹⁵ In the light of the king's countenance is life; and his favor is as a cloud of the latter rain. ¹⁶ How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! and to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver! ¹⁷ The highway of the upright is to depart from evil: he that keeps his way preserves his soul. ¹⁸ Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. ¹⁹ Better it is to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud. ²⁰ He that handles a matter wisely shall find good: and whosoever trusts in the LORD, happy is he. ²¹ The wise in heart shall be called prudent: and the sweetness of the lips increases learning. ²² Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that has it: but the instruction of fools is folly. ²³ The heart of the wise teaches his mouth, and adds learning to his lips. ²⁴ Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones. ²⁵ There is a way that seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death. ²⁶ He that labors labors for himself; for his mouth craves it of him. ²⁷ An ungodly man digs up evil: and in his lips there is as a burning fire. ²⁸ A perverse man sows strife: and a whisperer separates best friends. ²⁹ A violent man entices his neighbor, and leads him into the way that is not good. ³⁰ He shuts his eyes to devise perverse things: moving his lips he brings evil to pass. ³¹ White hair is a crown of glory, if it is found in the way of righteousness. ³² He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that rules his spirit than he that takes a city. ³³ The lot is cast into the lap; but its every decision is of the LORD.

¹¹ And the LORD said unto him, Who has made man's mouth? or who makes the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD? ¹² Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth, and teach you what you shall say.

¹⁵ And you shall speak unto him, and put words in his mouth: and I will be with your mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what you shall do.

³¹ And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, that they said, It is the king of Israel. Therefore they surrounded him to fight: but Jehoshaphat cried out, and the LORD helped him; and God led them to depart from him.

²⁷ Blessed be the LORD God of our fathers, who has put such a thing as this in the king’s heart, to beautify the house of the LORD which is in Jerusalem:

¹¹ O Lord, I beseech you, let now your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants, who desire to fear your name: and prosper, I pray you, your servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king’s cupbearer.

¹⁷ LORD, you have heard the desire of the humble: you will prepare their heart, you will cause your ear to hear:

³⁶ Incline my heart unto your testimonies, and not to covetousness.

⁹ A man's heart plans his way: but the LORD directs his steps.

²¹ There are many plans in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.

²⁴ A man’s steps are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?

¹ The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turns it wherever he will.

⁷ But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for you shall go to all that I shall send you, and whatsoever I command you you shall speak. ⁸ Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with you to deliver you, says the LORD. ⁹ Then the LORD put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in your mouth.

²³ O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man who walks to direct his steps.

³⁹ And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me forever, for the good of them, and of their children after them: ⁴⁰ And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from doing them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.

²⁶ A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. ²⁷ And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and you shall keep my judgments, and do them.

¹⁹ But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what you shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what you shall speak. ²⁰ For it is not you that speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks through you.

¹¹ And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates, and powers, take you no thought how or what thing you shall answer, or what you shall say: ¹² For the Holy Spirit shall teach you in the same hour what you ought to say.

¹⁴ Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate beforehand what you shall answer: ¹⁵ For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to contradict nor resist.

¹⁶ But thanks be to God, who put the same earnest care into the heart of Titus for you.

¹³ For it is God who works in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

¹⁶ Do not err, my beloved brethren. ¹⁷ Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. ¹⁸ Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

¹³ And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be you of the LORD: I have performed the commandment of the LORD. ¹⁴ And Samuel said, What means then this bleating of the sheep in my ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?

⁷ But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.

² For he flatters himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity is found to be hateful.

²¹ For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he ponders all his paths.

²⁵ There is a way that seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

² Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD weighs the hearts.

¹² If you say, Behold, we knew it not; does not he that weighs the heart consider it? and he that keeps your soul, does not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works?

¹² There is a generation that are pure in their own eyes, and yet are not washed from their filthiness.

⁷ The way of the just is uprightness: you, most upright, do smooth the path of the just.

²² For though you wash yourself with lye, and use much soap, yet your iniquity is marked before me, says the Lord GOD. ²³ How can you say, I am not polluted, I have not gone after Baalim? see your way in the valley, know what you have done: you are a swift dromedary traversing her ways;

¹⁰ I the LORD search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

²⁷ TEKEL; you are weighed in the balances, and are found wanting.

¹⁵ And he said unto them, You are they who justify yourselves before men; but God knows your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.

⁹ And he spoke this parable unto certain who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others: ¹⁰ Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a tax collector. ¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank you, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector.

⁷ What shall we say then? is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, you shall not covet. ⁸ But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, worked in me all manner of covetousness. For without the law sin was dead. ⁹ For I was alive apart from the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died.

¹⁸ And unto the angel of the church in Thyatira write; These things says the Son of God, who has his eyes like unto a flame of fire, and his feet are like fine bronze;

²³ And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he who searches the minds and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

⁸ I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause:

²⁸ You shall also decree a thing, and it shall be established for you: and the light shall shine upon your ways.

⁴ Delight yourself also in the LORD; and he shall give you the desires of your heart. ⁵ Commit your way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.

²² Cast your burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain you: he shall never permit the righteous to be moved.

⁶ In all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your paths.

⁵ Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, have taken evil counsel against you, saying, ⁶ Let us go up against Judah, and trouble it, and let us make a break in its wall for us, and set a king in the midst of it, even the son of Tabeal: ⁷ Thus says the Lord GOD, It shall not stand, neither shall it come to pass.

²⁵ Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what you shall eat, or what you shall drink; nor yet for your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body than clothing? ²⁶ Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much better than they? ²⁷ Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature? ²⁸ And why take you thought for clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: ²⁹ And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. ³⁰ Therefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? ³¹ Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, How shall we be clothed? ³² (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knows that you have need of all these things. ³³ But seek you first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. ³⁴ Take therefore no thought for tomorrow: for tomorrow shall take thought of the things for itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

²² And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what you shall eat; neither for the body, what you shall put on.

⁶ Be anxious for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

⁷ Casting all your care upon him; for he cares for you.

³⁰ That the wicked are reserved to the day of destruction? they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath.

⁷ Even everyone that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.

²¹ This people have I formed for myself; they shall show forth my praise.

²² What if God, willing to show his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:

³⁶ For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory forever. Amen.

⁸ And, A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense, even to them who stumble at the word, being disobedient: to which also they were appointed.

³ And through covetousness shall they with false words exploit you: whose judgment of old now lingers not, and their destruction slumbers not.

⁹ The Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:

¹¹ You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for you have created all things, and for your pleasure they are and were created.

⁷ You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that takes his name in vain.

¹² Look on every one that is proud, and bring him low; and tread down the wicked in their place.

¹⁶ These six things does the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: ¹⁷ A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,

¹³ The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogance, and the evil way, and the perverse mouth, do I hate.

²¹ Though they join hand to hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished: but the descendants of the righteous shall be delivered.

¹¹ Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be done to him.

⁸ But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, ⁹ Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that does evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Greek;

⁶ But he gives more grace. Therefore he says, God resists the proud, but gives grace unto the humble.

¹¹ And Abraham said, Because I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife's sake.

⁹ Also I said, It is not good what you do: ought you not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the nations our enemies?

¹⁵ But the former governors that had been before me laid burdens upon the people, and had taken of them food and wine, besides forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants bore rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God.

¹ There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was blameless and upright, and one that feared God, and turned away from evil. ² And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters. ³ His possessions also were seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred female donkeys, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east. ⁴ And his sons went and feasted in their houses, every one on his day; and sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them. ⁵ And it was so, when the days of their feasting were finished, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually. ⁶ Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them. ⁷ And the LORD said unto Satan, From where come you? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it. ⁸ And the LORD said unto Satan, Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a blameless and an upright man, one that fears God, and turns away from evil?

²⁸ And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

¹⁰ Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other.

¹⁶ A wise man fears, and departs from evil: but the fool rages, and is confident.

²⁷ The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to turn one away from the snares of death.

²⁸ Mercy and truth preserve the king: and his throne is upheld by mercy.

²⁷ Therefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto you, and break off your sins by practicing righteousness, and your iniquities by showing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of your tranquility.

¹⁸ Who is a God like unto you, who pardons iniquity, and passes by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retains not his anger forever, because he delights in mercy. ¹⁹ He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and you will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. ²⁰ You will show truth to Jacob, and mercy to Abraham, which you have sworn unto our fathers from the days of old.

⁴¹ But rather give alms of such things as you have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you.

² Every branch in me that bears not fruit he takes away: and every branch that bears fruit, he prunes it, that it may bring forth more fruit.

⁹ And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

¹ Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

²¹ Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

²² Seeing you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto sincere love of the brethren, see that you love one another with a pure heart fervently:

⁴¹ And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob.

⁶ And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to your brother Esau, and also he comes to meet you, and four hundred men with him. ⁷ Then Jacob was greatly afraid and distressed: and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks, and herds, and the camels, into two bands;

²⁸ And he said, Your name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince have you power with God and with men, and have prevailed.

⁴ And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept.

¹⁰ And the fear of the LORD fell upon all the kingdoms of the lands that were round about Judah, so that they made no war against Jehoshaphat.

³¹ This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or bullock that has horns and hoofs.

¹¹ The LORD said, Verily it shall be well with your remnant; verily I will cause the enemy to treat you well in the time of evil and in the time of affliction.

¹ And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, ² And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.

¹⁹ And when he had received food, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples who were at Damascus. ²⁰ And immediately he preached Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God.

³¹ What shall we then say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

¹⁸ But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable, well pleasing to God.

¹⁰ That you might walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God;

²⁰ Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.

²¹ Make you complete in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is well pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.

²² And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

¹⁶ A little that a righteous man has is better than the riches of many wicked.

¹⁶ Better is little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure with trouble.

⁶ The getting of treasures by a lying tongue is a vanity tossed to and fro of them that seek death. ⁷ The violence of the wicked shall destroy them; because they refuse to do justice.

¹¹ As the partridge sits on eggs, and hatches them not; so he that gets riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool.

¹⁰ Are there yet the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked, and the short measure that is abominable?

⁶ But godliness with contentment is great gain. ⁷ For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. ⁸ And having food and clothing let us be with these things content. ⁹ But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which plunge men into destruction and perdition.

²³ The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delights in his way.

³⁰ There is no wisdom nor understanding nor counsel against the LORD.

¹⁰ Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:

⁵ Is not this it from which my lord drinks, and by which indeed he divines? you have done evil in so doing.

¹⁵ And Joseph said unto them, What deed is this that you have done? Know you not that such a man as I can certainly divine?

¹⁸ And it shall be, when he sits upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write himself a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests the Levites: ¹⁹ And it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life: that he may learn to fear the LORD his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them: ²⁰ That his heart be not lifted up above his brethren, and that he turn not aside from the commandment, to the right hand, or to the left: to the end that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he, and his children, in the midst of Israel.

³ The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spoke to me, He that rules over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God. ⁴ And he shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun rises, even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth, by clear shining after rain.

²⁸ And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do justice.

⁶ Your throne, O God, is forever and ever: the scepter of your kingdom is a righteous scepter. ⁷ You love righteousness, and hate wickedness: therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness above your fellows.

¹ [A Psalm of Solomon.] Give the king your judgments, O God, and your righteousness unto the king's son. ² He shall judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice. ³ The mountains shall bring peace to the people, and the little hills, by righteousness. ⁴ He shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor.

⁴ The king's strength also loves justice; you do establish equity, you execute justice and righteousness in Jacob.

¹² It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness: for the throne is established by righteousness. ¹³ Righteous lips are the delight of kings; and they love him that speaks what is right.

¹ Behold, a king shall reign in righteousness, and princes shall rule in justice. ² And a man shall be as a hiding place from the wind, and a refuge from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.

⁵ Behold, the days come, says the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the earth. ⁶ In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name by which he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

⁴ They have spoken words, swearing falsely in making a covenant: thus judgment springs up like hemlock in the furrows of the field.

⁷ You who turn justice to wormwood, and leave off righteousness in the earth,

¹² Shall horses run upon the rock? will one plow there with oxen? for you have turned justice into gall, and the fruit of righteousness into hemlock:

³⁵ You shall do no unrighteousness in judgment, in measures of length, or weight, or quantity. ³⁶ Just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin, shall you have: I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.

¹³ You shall not have in your bag differing weights, a great and a small. ¹⁴ You shall not have in your house differing measures, a great and a small. ¹⁵ But you shall have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure shall you have: that your days may be lengthened in the land which the LORD your God gives you.

¹ A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.

¹⁰ Diverse weights, and diverse measures, both of them are alike abomination to the LORD.

²³ Diverse weights are an abomination unto the LORD; and a false balance is not good.

¹⁰ You shall have just balances, and a just ephah, and a just bath.

⁷ He is a merchant, the balances of deceit are in his hand: he loves to oppress.

⁵ Saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell grain? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit?

¹¹ Shall I count those pure with the wicked balances, and with the bag of deceitful weights?

¹⁶ For all that do such things, and all that do unrighteously, are an abomination unto the LORD your God.

¹⁸ Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice wage war.

⁵ Take away the wicked from before the king, and his throne shall be established in righteousness.

⁹ He that turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.

¹⁴ The king that faithfully judges the poor, his throne shall be established forever.

⁴⁸ But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

¹¹ And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon it was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he does judge and make war.

⁵ Whoever secretly slanders his neighbor, him will I cut off: he that has a haughty look and a proud heart will I not endure. ⁶ My eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me: he that walks in a perfect way, he shall serve me. ⁷ He that works deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that tells lies shall not tarry in my sight.

³⁵ The king's favor is toward a wise servant: but his wrath is against him that causes shame.

¹¹ He that loves pureness of heart and has grace on his lips, the king shall be his friend.

³¹ Then he said, God do so and more also to me, if the head of Elisha the son of Shaphat shall stand on him this day. ³² But Elisha sat in his house, and the elders sat with him; and the king sent a man from before him: but before the messenger came to him, he said to the elders, See you how this son of a murderer has sent to take away my head? look, when the messenger comes, shut the door, and hold him fast at the door: is not the sound of his master’s feet behind him? ³³ And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger came down unto him: and he said, Behold, this evil is of the LORD; why should I wait for the LORD any longer?

¹¹ An evil man seeks only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.

¹² The king's wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favor is as dew upon the grass.

² The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whosoever provokes him to anger sins against his own life.

⁴ If the spirit of the ruler rises up against you, leave not your post; for yielding pacifies great offences.

¹³ Then Nebuchadnezzar in his rage and fury commanded to bring Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. Then they brought these men before the king. ¹⁴ Nebuchadnezzar spoke and said unto them, Is it true, O Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, do you not serve my gods, nor worship the golden image which I have set up? ¹⁵ Now if you are ready that at the time you hear the sound of the horn, flute, harp, lyre, psaltery, and dulcimer, and all kinds of music, you fall down and worship the image which I have made; well: but if you worship not, you shall be cast the same hour into the midst of a burning fiery furnace; and who is that God that shall deliver you out of my hands? ¹⁶ Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, answered and said to the king, O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. ¹⁷ If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. ¹⁸ But if not, be it known unto you, O king, that we will not serve your gods, nor worship the golden image which you have set up. ¹⁹ Then was Nebuchadnezzar full of fury, and the form of his appearance was changed against Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego: therefore he spoke, and commanded that they should heat the furnace seven times more than it was usually heated. ²⁰ And he commanded the most mighty men that were in his army to bind Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and to cast them into the burning fiery furnace. ²¹ Then these men were bound in their coats, their trousers, and their turbans, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. ²² Therefore because the king's commandment was urgent, and the furnace exceedingly hot, the flame of the fire slew those men that took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. ²³ And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. ²⁴ Then Nebuchadnezzar the king was astonished, and rose up in haste, and spoke, and said unto his counselors, Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire? They answered and said unto the king, True, O king. ²⁵ He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they are not hurt; and the form of the fourth is like a son of the gods.

²⁷ And immediately the king sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought: and he went and beheaded him in the prison,

⁴ And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. ⁵ But I will forewarn you whom you shall fear: Fear him, who after he has killed has power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

²⁰ And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: but they came with one accord to him, and, having made Blastus the king's chamberlain their friend, desired peace; because their country was fed by the king's country.

²⁰ Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God.

²³ And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain. ²⁴ If I mocked them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down.

⁶ There are many that say, Who will show us any good? LORD, lift up the light of your countenance upon us.

⁶ For you have made him most blessed forever: you have made him exceedingly glad with your presence.

⁵ For his anger endures but for a moment; in his favor is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.

⁶ He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers that water the earth.

³ Let us know, let us press on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.

¹ Ask of the LORD rain in the time of the latter rain; so the LORD shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain, to everyone grass in the field.

²⁸ You have made known to me the ways of life; you shall make me full of joy with your countenance.

¹³ Man knows not the price thereof; neither is it found in the land of the living. ¹⁴ The deep says, It is not in me: and the sea says, It is not with me. ¹⁵ It cannot be gotten for gold, neither shall silver be weighed for the price thereof. ¹⁶ It cannot be valued with the gold of Ophir, with the precious onyx, or the sapphire. ¹⁷ The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold. ¹⁸ No mention shall be made of coral, or of crystal: for the price of wisdom is above rubies. ¹⁹ The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold. ²⁰ From where then comes wisdom? and where is the place of understanding? ²¹ Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and concealed from the fowls of the air. ²² Destruction and death say, We have heard the fame of it with our ears. ²³ God understands its way, and he knows its place. ²⁴ For he looks to the ends of the earth, and sees under the whole heaven; ²⁵ To make the weight for the wind; and he apportions the waters by measure. ²⁶ When he made a decree for the rain, and a way for the lightning of the thunder: ²⁷ Then did he see it, and declare it; he prepared it, yea, and searched it out. ²⁸ And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

¹²⁷ Therefore I love your commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold.

¹⁵ She is more precious than rubies: and all the things you can desire are not to be compared unto her. ¹⁶ Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honor. ¹⁷ Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. ¹⁸ She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is everyone that retains her.

⁷ Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all your getting get understanding.

¹⁰ Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold. ¹¹ For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.

¹⁹ My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.

¹² For wisdom is a defense, and money is a defense: but the excellence of knowledge is, that wisdom gives life to them that have it.

²⁶ For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

²¹ So is he that lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

²⁴ Put away from you a deceitful mouth, and perverse lips put far from you. ²⁵ Let your eyes look directly forward, and let your eyelids look straight before you. ²⁶ Ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established. ²⁷ Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove your foot from evil.

⁹ He that walks uprightly walks securely: but he that perverts his ways shall be known.

¹⁶ He that keeps the commandment keeps his own soul; but he that despises his ways shall die.

⁸ And a highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for others: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein.

¹³ But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

³⁵ But in every nation he that fears him, and works righteousness, is accepted with him.

¹⁶ And in this do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offense toward God, and toward men.

¹⁰ Not pilfering, but showing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things. ¹¹ For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, ¹² Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live sensibly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; ¹³ Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ; ¹⁴ Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a people for his own, zealous of good works.

³⁹ But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

²¹ Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.

²⁴ Now unto him who is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,

¹⁰ Because you have kept the word of my patience, I also will keep you from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

⁵ And when Haman saw that Mordecai bowed not, nor paid him homage, then was Haman full of wrath.

⁶ So Haman came in. And the king said unto him, What shall be done unto the man whom the king delights to honor? Now Haman thought in his heart, To whom would the king delight to do honor more than to myself?

¹⁰ So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath abated.

² When pride comes, then comes shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.

¹⁹ He who loves transgression loves strife: and he who exalts his gate seeks destruction.

¹² Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honor is humility.

²³ A man's pride shall bring him low: but honor shall uphold the humble in spirit.

¹¹ The lofty looks of man shall be humbled, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day. ¹² For the day of the LORD of hosts shall come upon everyone that is proud and lofty, and upon everyone that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low:

¹⁰ Thus shall you speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not your God, in whom you trust, deceive you, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria. ¹¹ Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by destroying them utterly; and shall you be delivered? ¹² Have the gods of the nations delivered them whom my fathers have destroyed, as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden who were in Telassar? ¹³ Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivvah?

³⁸ And it came to pass, as he was worshiping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons struck him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat: and Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.

³⁰ The king spoke, and said, Is not this great Babylon, that I have built for the house of the kingdom by the might of my power, and for the honor of my majesty? ³¹ While the word was in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken; The kingdom has departed from you. ³² And they shall drive you from men, and your dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field: they shall make you to eat grass like oxen, and seven times shall pass over you, until you know that the most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomever he will. ³³ The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hair had grown like eagles' feathers, and his nails like birds' claws. ³⁴ And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up my eyes unto heaven, and my understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honored him that lives forever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation: ³⁵ And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he does according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can restrain his hand, or say unto him, What do you? ³⁶ At the same time my reason returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, my honor and brightness returned unto me; and my counselors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added unto me. ³⁷ Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.

²² And you his son, O Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this;

²⁴ Then was the part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was written.

³ The pride of your heart has deceived you, you that dwell in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that says in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground? ⁴ Though you exalt yourself as the eagle, and though you set your nest among the stars, from there will I bring you down, says the LORD.

³³ Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of you, yet will I never be offended. ³⁴ Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto you, That this night, before the cock crows, you shall deny me three times. ³⁵ Peter said unto him, Though I should die with you, yet will I not deny you. Likewise also said all the disciples.

⁷⁴ Then began he to curse and to swear, saying, I know not the man. And immediately the cock crowed.

²⁰ Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith. Be not arrogant, but fear:

⁶ Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

⁹ The enemy said, I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil; my lust shall be satisfied upon them; I will draw my sword, my hand shall destroy them.

¹⁸ The LORD is near unto them that are of a broken heart; and saves such as be of a contrite spirit.

⁶ Though the LORD be high, yet has he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knows from afar.

³ You have multiplied the nation, and increased the joy: they joy before you according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

⁶ I will send him against a godless nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

¹³ For he says, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am prudent: and I have removed the boundaries of the people, and have robbed their treasures, and I have put down the inhabitants like a valiant man: ¹⁴ And my hand has found as a nest the riches of the people: and as one gathers eggs that are left, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped. ¹⁵ Shall the ax boast itself against him that hews with it? or shall the saw magnify itself against him that uses it? as if the rod should shake itself against them that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift up itself, as if it were not wood.

¹² Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he has poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

¹⁵ For thus says the high and lofty One that inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

³ Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

⁵¹ He has showed strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. ⁵² He has put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. ⁵³ He has filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he has sent empty away.

¹³ And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner. ¹⁴ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for everyone that exalts himself shall be abased; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.

³⁸ And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is? ³⁹ And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Since God has showed you all this, there is none so discreet and wise as you are: ⁴⁰ You shall be over my house, and according unto your word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than you.

²⁰ And they were helped against them, and the Hagrites were delivered into their hand, and all that were with them: for they cried to God in the battle, and he heeded their prayer; because they put their trust in him.

¹² Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

⁸ O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusts in him.

¹ [A song of ascents.] They that trust in the LORD shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abides forever.

⁵ Happy is he that has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God:

³⁵ For whosoever finds me finds life, and shall obtain favor of the LORD.

¹⁵ Good understanding gives favor: but the way of transgressors is hard.

² A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causes shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.

⁸ He that gets wisdom loves his own soul: he that keeps understanding shall find good.

¹⁹ That your trust may be in the LORD, I have made known to you this day, even to you. ²⁰ Have not I written to you excellent things in counsels and knowledge,

³ Through wisdom is a house built; and by understanding it is established: ⁴ And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches. ⁵ A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increases strength.

³ You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on you: because he trusts in you. ⁴ Trust in the LORD forever: for in the LORD GOD is everlasting strength:

¹⁸ And therefore will the LORD wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the LORD is a God of justice: blessed are all they that wait for him.

⁷ Blessed is the man that trusts in the LORD, and whose hope the LORD is. ⁸ For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreads out its roots by the river, and shall not fear when the heat comes, but its leaf shall be green; and shall not be anxious in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

¹⁹ And the king spoke with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king. ²⁰ And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm. ²¹ And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.

²⁸ Then Nebuchadnezzar spoke, and said, Blessed be the God of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who has sent his angel, and delivered his servants that trusted in him, and have changed the king's word, and yielded their bodies, that they might not serve nor worship any god, except their own God.

²³ Then was the king exceedingly glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of harm was found upon him, because he believed in his God.

¹⁶ Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.

¹² That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. ¹³ In whom you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after you believed, you were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise,

¹² Behold, I have done according to your words: lo, I have given you a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like you before you, neither after you shall any arise like unto you.

² You are fairer than the children of men: grace is poured into your lips: therefore God has blessed you forever.

⁸ The wise in heart will heed commandments: but a prating fool shall fall.

⁷ The lips of the wise disperse knowledge: but the heart of the foolish does not so.

²³ The heart of the wise teaches his mouth, and adds learning to his lips. ²⁴ Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.

¹⁵ My son, if your heart is wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.

⁹ Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so does the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel.

¹⁰ The preacher sought to find acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.

⁴ The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he awakens morning by morning, he awakens my ear to hear as the learned.

²² And all bore him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?

⁴⁶ The officers answered, Never man spoke like this man.

¹⁹ For your obedience is well known unto all men. I am glad therefore on your behalf: but yet I would have you wise unto that which is good, and innocent concerning evil.

¹⁷ But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

¹¹ The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: but violence covers the mouth of the wicked.

¹⁴ The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

² The tongue of the wise uses knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools pours out foolishness.

²⁸ The heart of the righteous studies to answer: but the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things.

⁴ The words of a man's mouth are like deep waters, and the wellspring of wisdom like a flowing brook.

¹⁴ Let them alone: they are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.

¹⁶ Woe unto you, you blind guides, who say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is bound! ¹⁷ You fools and blind: for which is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifies the gold? ¹⁸ And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever swears by the gift that is upon it, he is bound. ¹⁹ You fools and blind: for which is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifies the gift? ²⁰ Whoever therefore shall swear by the altar, swears by it, and by all things thereon. ²¹ And whoever shall swear by the temple, swears by it, and by him who dwells therein. ²² And he that shall swear by heaven, swears by the throne of God, and by him who sits thereon. ²³ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, justice, mercy, and faith: these ought you to have done, and not to leave the other undone. ²⁴ You blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel. ²⁵ Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess. ²⁶ You blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.

³⁹ And he spoke a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch? ⁴⁰ The disciple is not above his teacher: but every one that is perfect shall be as his teacher.

²⁴ Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that hears my word, and believes on him that sent me, has everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

⁶³ It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh profits nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

⁶⁸ Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? you have the words of eternal life.

³⁰ The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom, and his tongue talks of justice. ³¹ The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.

¹ [To the Chief Musician upon shoshannim, for the Sons of Korah, a maschil, a song of loves.] My heart is overflowing with a good matter: I speak of the things which I have made concerning the king: my tongue is the pen of a ready scribe.

¹⁷ Bow down your ear, and hear the words of the wise, and apply your heart unto my knowledge. ¹⁸ For it is a pleasant thing if you keep them within you; they shall all be fitted on your lips.

³⁴ O generation of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. ³⁵ A good man out of the good treasure of the heart brings forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.

¹⁶ Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

² My teaching shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass:

¹⁰ More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

¹⁰³ How sweet are your words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!

⁸ It shall be health to your body, and strength to your bones.

²² For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.

¹⁸ There is one that speaks like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise brings health.

²³ A man has joy by the answer of his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it!

²⁶ The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD: but the words of the pure are pleasant words.

¹⁶ Yea, my inmost being shall rejoice, when your lips speak right things.

¹³ My son, eat honey because it is good; and the honeycomb, which is sweet to your taste: ¹⁴ So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto your soul: when you have found it, then there shall be a reward, and your hope shall not be cut off.

¹¹ A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. ¹² As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.

¹¹ Your lips, O my spouse, drop like the honeycomb: honey and milk are under your tongue; and the fragrance of your garments is like the fragrance of Lebanon.

¹⁶ Your words were found, and I did eat them; and your word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of my heart: for I am called by your name, O LORD God of hosts.

¹⁹ Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and said unto them, Peace be unto you. ²⁰ And when he had so said, he showed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord. ²¹ Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father has sent me, even so send I you.

¹⁵ The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkens unto counsel is wise.

²⁶ The righteous chooses his friends carefully: but the way of the wicked leads them astray.

¹² There is a way which seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

¹⁵ Because you have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with sheol are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves: ¹⁶ Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation: he that believes shall not be in haste. ¹⁷ Justice also will I make the measuring line, and righteousness the plumb line: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place. ¹⁸ And your covenant with death shall be annulled, and your agreement with sheol shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then you shall be beaten down by it. ¹⁹ From the time that it goes forth it shall take you: for morning by morning shall it pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a terror just to understand the report.

⁴⁷ Then answered them the Pharisees, Are you also deceived? ⁴⁸ Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him? ⁴⁹ But this people who know not the law are cursed.

⁴⁰ And some of the Pharisees who were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?

⁹ I verily thought with myself, that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth.

⁵ Examine yourselves, whether you are in the faith; prove your own selves. Know you not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, unless you are counterfeits?

¹² If you are wise, you shall be wise for yourself: but if you scoff, you alone shall bear it.

²³ In all labor there is profit: but the talk of the lips leads only to poverty.

⁷ All the labor of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.

¹¹ And that you study to be quiet, and to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; ¹² That you may walk honestly toward them that are outside, and that you may have lack of nothing.

⁸ Neither did we eat any man's bread for nothing; but worked with labor and travail night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you: ⁹ Not because we have not that right, but to make ourselves an example unto you to follow us. ¹⁰ For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. ¹¹ For we hear that there are some who walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. ¹² Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.

¹⁷ Now therefore know and consider what you will do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his household: for he is such a son of Belial, that a man cannot speak to him.

¹ And there happened to be there a man of Belial, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjamite: and he blew a trumpet, and said, We have no part in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to his tents, O Israel.

¹⁴ From men by your hand, O LORD, from men of the world, who have their portion in this life, and whose belly you fill with your hid treasure: they are full of children, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes. ¹⁵ As for me, I will behold your face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with your likeness.

² Your tongue devises evil; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully. ³ You love evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah. ⁴ You love all devouring words, O you deceitful tongue.

⁴ My soul is among lions: and I lie even among them that are set on fire, even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.

⁴ If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hid treasures;

¹² A worthless person, a wicked man, walks with a perverse mouth.

¹⁴ Perversity is in his heart, he devises evil continually; he sows discord.

¹⁸ Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope:

¹³ Behold, is it not of the LORD of hosts that the people shall labor to feed the fire, and the people shall weary themselves in vain?

⁶ And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.

¹ Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. Have you eaten of the tree, of which I commanded you that you should not eat? ¹² And the man said, The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat. ¹³ And the LORD God said unto the woman, What is this that you have done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

⁹ And David said to Saul, Why hear you men's words, saying, Behold, David seeks your hurt?

¹⁹ A false witness that speaks lies, and he that sows discord among brethren.

¹⁸ A wrathful man stirs up strife: but he that is slow to anger quiets strife.

⁹ He that covers over a transgression seeks love; but he that repeats a matter separates close friends.

²⁰ For I fear, lest, when I come, I shall not find you such as I wish, and that I shall be found unto you such as you desire not: lest there be debates, envyings, wraths, strifes, backbitings, whisperings, conceit, tumults:

³ If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; ⁴ He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting over questions and disputes of words, out of which comes envy, strife, railings, evil suspicions, ⁵ Perverse wranglings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw yourself.

¹⁴ But if you have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, boast not, and lie not against the truth. ¹⁵ This wisdom descends not from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. ¹⁶ For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

¹¹ Saul also sent messengers unto David's house, to watch him, and to slay him in the morning: and Michal David's wife told him, saying, If you save not your life tonight, tomorrow you shall be slain.

¹⁷ And Saul said unto Michal, Why have you deceived me so, and sent away my enemy, that he is escaped? And Michal answered Saul, He said unto me, Let me go; why should I kill you?

⁷ Then Saul said unto his servants that stood about him, Hear now, you Benjamites; will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards, and make you all captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds; ⁸ That all of you have conspired against me, and there is none that shows me that my son has made a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me, or shows unto me that my son has stirred up my servant against me, to lie in wait, as at this day? ⁹ Then answered Doeg the Edomite, who was set over the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub.

¹⁹ Then came up the Ziphites to Saul to Gibeah, saying, Does not David hide himself with us in strongholds in the forest, in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the south of Jeshimon? ²⁰ Now therefore, O king, come down according to all the desire of your soul to come down; and our part shall be to deliver him into the king's hand. ²¹ And Saul said, Blessed be you of the LORD; for you have compassion on me.

¹³ Therefore was he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might reproach me.

¹² To deliver you from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaks perverse things; ¹³ Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness; ¹⁴ Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the perverseness of the wicked; ¹⁵ Whose ways are crooked, and who are perverse in their paths:

³¹ Envy you not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.

¹⁷ You therefore, beloved, seeing you know these things beforehand, beware lest you also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own steadfastness.

²⁰ For everyone that does evil hates the light, neither comes to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.

³² You shall rise up before the gray headed, and honor the face of the old man, and fear your God: I am the LORD.

² And now, behold, the king walks before you: and I am old and gray headed; and, behold, my sons are with you: and I have walked before you from my childhood unto this day. ³ Behold, here I am: witness against me before the LORD, and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose donkey have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I received any bribe to blind my eyes with? and I will restore it to you. ⁴ And they said, you have not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither have you taken anything of any man's hand. ⁵ And he said unto them, The LORD is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that you have not found anything in my hand. And they answered, He is witness.

¹⁰ Therefore David blessed the LORD before all the congregation: and David said, Blessed be you, LORD God of Israel our father, forever and ever. ¹¹ Yours, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is yours; yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as head above all. ¹² Both riches and honor come from you, and you reign over all; and in your hand is power and might; and in your hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all. ¹³ Now therefore, our God, we thank you, and praise your glorious name. ¹⁴ But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly as this? for all things come from you, and of your own have we given you. ¹⁵ For we are strangers before you, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is no abiding. ¹⁶ O LORD our God, all this abundance that we have prepared to build you a house for your holy name comes from your hand, and is all your own. ¹⁷ I know also, my God, that you test the heart, and have pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of my heart I have willingly offered all these things: and now have I seen with joy your people, who are present here, to offer willingly unto you. ¹⁸ O LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, our fathers, keep this forever in the imagination of the thoughts of the heart of your people, and direct their heart unto you: ¹⁹ And give unto Solomon my son a perfect heart, to keep your commandments, your testimonies, and your statutes, and to do all these things, and to build the palace, for which I have made provision. ²⁰ And David said to all the congregation, Now bless the LORD your God. And all the congregation blessed the LORD God of their fathers, and bowed down their heads, and worshiped the LORD, and the king. ²¹ And they sacrificed sacrifices unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings unto the LORD, on the next day, even a thousand bullocks, a thousand rams, and a thousand lambs, with their drink offerings, and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel: ²² And did eat and drink before the LORD on that day with great gladness. And they made Solomon the son of David king the second time, and anointed him unto the LORD to be the prince, and Zadok to be priest. ²³ Then Solomon sat on the throne of the LORD as king instead of David his father, and prospered; and all Israel obeyed him. ²⁴ And all the leaders, and the mighty men, and all the sons likewise of king David, submitted themselves unto Solomon the king. ²⁵ And the LORD magnified Solomon exceedingly in the sight of all Israel, and bestowed upon him such royal majesty as had not been on any king before him in Israel.

⁶ And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said, I am young, and you are very old; therefore I was afraid, and dared not show you my opinion. ⁷ I said, Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom.

¹ My son, forget not my law; but let your heart keep my commandments: ² For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to you.

⁶ Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children is their fathers.

²⁹ The glory of young men is their strength: and the beauty of old men is the gray head.

¹³ Better is a poor and wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no longer be admonished.

²⁹ Lord, now let your servant depart in peace, according to your word: ³⁰ For my eyes have seen your salvation, ³¹ Which you have prepared before the face of all people; ³² A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of your people Israel. ³³ And Joseph and his mother marveled at those things which were spoken of him. ³⁴ And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; ³⁵ (Yea, a sword shall pierce through your own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. ³⁶ And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher: she was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; ³⁷ And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, who departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. ³⁸ And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spoke of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

⁹ Yet for love's sake I rather beseech you, being such a one as Paul the aged, and now also a prisoner of Jesus Christ.

⁸ The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in mercy.

²⁹ He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalts folly.

¹⁹ Better it is to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.

¹¹ The discretion of a man delays his anger; and it is his glory to overlook a transgression.

²⁸ He that has no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

²¹ Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

¹ Be you therefore followers of God, as dear children;

¹⁹ Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger:

²¹ To him that overcomes will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and sat down with my Father in his throne.

⁵⁵ Nevertheless the land shall be divided by lot: according to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall inherit. ⁵⁶ According to the lot shall the possession of it be divided between many and few. ⁵⁷ And these are they that were numbered of the Levites according to their families: of Gershon, the family of the Gershonites: of Kohath, the family of the Kohathites: of Merari, the family of the Merarites. ⁵⁸ These are the families of the Levites: the family of the Libnites, the family of the Hebronites, the family of the Mahlites, the family of the Mushites, the family of the Korathites. And Kohath begat Amram. ⁵⁹ And the name of Amram's wife was Jochebed, the daughter of Levi, whom her mother bore to Levi in Egypt: and she bore unto Amram Aaron and Moses, and Miriam their sister. ⁶⁰ And unto Aaron was born Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. ⁶¹ And Nadab and Abihu died, when they offered unholy fire before the LORD. ⁶² And those that were numbered of them were twenty and three thousand, all males from a month old and upward: for they were not numbered among the children of Israel, because there was no inheritance given them among the children of Israel. ⁶³ These are they that were numbered by Moses and Eleazar the priest, who numbered the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan near Jericho. ⁶⁴ But among these there was not a man of them whom Moses and Aaron the priest numbered, when they numbered the children of Israel in the wilderness of Sinai. ⁶⁵ For the LORD had said of them, They shall surely die in the wilderness. And there was not left a man of them, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun.

¹⁴ In the morning therefore you shall be brought according to your tribes: and it shall be, that the tribe which the LORD takes shall come according to the families thereof; and the family which the LORD shall take shall come by households; and the household which the LORD shall take shall come man by man.

⁵ And they shall divide it into seven parts: Judah shall continue in their territory on the south, and the house of Joseph shall continue in their territory on the north.

¹⁰ And Joshua cast lots for them in Shiloh before the LORD: and there Joshua divided the land unto the children of Israel according to their divisions.

⁴¹ Therefore Saul said unto the LORD God of Israel, Give a perfect lot. And Saul and Jonathan were taken: but the people escaped. ⁴² And Saul said, Cast lots between me and Jonathan my son. And Jonathan was taken.

¹ And the rulers of the people dwelt at Jerusalem: the rest of the people also cast lots, to bring one of ten to dwell in Jerusalem the holy city, and nine tenths to dwell in other cities.

¹⁸ The lot causes contentions to cease, and decides between the mighty.

²⁶ Many seek the ruler's favor; but every man's judgment comes from the LORD.

⁷ And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

²⁶ And they cast their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
