¹ And the men of Ephraim said unto him, Why have you served us thus, that you called us not, when you went to fight with the Midianites? And they did argue with him sharply. ² And he said unto them, What have I done now in comparison to you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer? ³ God has delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb: and what was I able to do in comparison to you? Then their anger was abated toward him, when he had said that.

³ And when I saw that you delivered me not, I put my life in my hands, and passed over against the children of Ammon, and the LORD delivered them into my hand: why then are you come up unto me this day, to fight against me? ⁴ Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead, and fought with Ephraim: and the men of Gilead struck down Ephraim, because they said, You Gileadites are fugitives of Ephraim among the Ephraimites, and among the Manassites. ⁵ And the Gileadites took the fords of Jordan before the Ephraimites: and it was so that when those Ephraimites who were escaped said, Let me go over; that the men of Gilead said unto him, are you an Ephraimite? And they girded on every man his sword; and David also girded on his sword: and there went up after David about four hundred men; and two hundred abode by the supplies.

⁴³ And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more right in David than you: why then did you despise us, since our advice was first in bringing back our king? And the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.

So Israel departed unto their tents.

⁷ Behold, they bellow out with their mouths: swords are in their lips: for who, say they, does hear?

²³ A prudent man conceals knowledge: but the heart of fools proclaims foolishness.

¹¹ A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. ¹² As an earring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.

⁴ The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he awakens morning by morning, he awakens my ear to hear as the learned.

⁹ For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. In this you have done foolishly: therefore from now on you shall have wars.

⁴ Does not he see my ways, and count all my steps?

²¹ For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he sees all his steps. ²² There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.

²¹ For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he ponders all his paths.

¹⁷ For my eyes are upon all their ways: they are not hid from my face, neither is their iniquity hid from my eyes.

²⁴ Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? says the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? says the LORD.

¹⁹ Great in counsel, and mighty in work: for your eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men: to give everyone according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:

¹³ Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

²² And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever: ²³ Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from which he was taken. ²⁴ So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubim, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way of the tree of life.

¹¹ Now, my son, the LORD be with you; and prosper you, and build the house of the LORD your God, as he has said of you. ¹² Only the LORD give you wisdom and understanding, and give you charge concerning Israel, that you may keep the law of the LORD your God. ¹³ Then shall you prosper, if you take heed to fulfill the statutes and judgments which the LORD charged Moses with concerning Israel: be strong, and of good courage; dread not, nor be dismayed.

⁹ And you, Solomon my son, know you the God of your father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searches all hearts, and understands all the imaginations of the thoughts: if you seek him, he will be found of you; but if you forsake him, he will cast you off forever.

²⁰ And David said to Solomon his son, Be strong and of good courage, and do it: fear not, nor be dismayed: for the LORD God, even my God, will be with you; he will not fail you, nor forsake you, until you have finished all the work for the service of the house of the LORD.

⁵ Let the righteous strike me; it shall be a kindness: and let him reprove me; it shall be an excellent oil, which shall not break my head: for yet my prayer also shall be against their evil.

²³ Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.

²³ For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:

¹⁵ These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise you.

¹⁹ Because he has oppressed and has forsaken the poor; because he has violently taken away a house which he built not; ²⁰ Surely he shall not feel quietness in his heart, he shall not save of that which he desired. ²¹ There shall none of his food be left; therefore shall no man look for his goods. ²² In the fullness of his sufficiency he shall be in distress: every hand of the wicked shall come upon him. ²³ When he is about to fill his belly, God shall cast the fury of his wrath upon him, and shall rain it upon him while he is eating.

¹⁶ A little that a righteous man has is better than the riches of many wicked.

³ Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endures forever.

²¹ That I may cause those that love me to inherit wealth; and I will fill their treasuries.

²² The blessing of the LORD, it makes rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.

²² A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children: but the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.

¹⁶ Better is little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure with trouble.

⁸ Better is a little with righteousness than great revenues without justice.

²⁰ There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spends it up.

⁶ Better is a handful with quietness, than both hands full with toil and grasping for the wind.

¹⁰ He that loves silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loves abundance, with increase: this is also vanity. ¹¹ When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: so what good is there to the owners, except the beholding of them with their eyes? ¹² The sleep of a laboring man is sweet, whether he eats little or much: but the abundance of the rich will not allow him to sleep. ¹³ There is a great evil which I have seen under the sun, namely, riches kept by their owners to their hurt. ¹⁴ But those riches are lost by a bad venture: when he begets a son, there is nothing in his hand.

²⁶ Esteeming the reproach of the Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he looked for the recompense of the reward.

¹ Come now, you rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. ² Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. ³ Your gold and silver is rusted; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as if it were fire. You have heaped treasure together for the last days.

³⁰ The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom, and his tongue talks of justice.

² You are fairer than the children of men: grace is poured into your lips: therefore God has blessed you forever.

¹³ Then will I teach transgressors your ways; and sinners shall be converted unto you. ¹⁴ Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of your righteousness. ¹⁵ O Lord, open my lips; and my mouth shall show forth your praise.

² I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old: ³ Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. ⁴ We will not hide them from their children, showing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he has done. ⁵ For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children: ⁶ That the generation to come might know them, even the children who should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:

²⁰ The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is of little worth. ²¹ The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for lack of wisdom.

⁹ And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he pondered, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs. ¹⁰ The preacher sought to find acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.

¹¹ Your lips, O my spouse, drop like the honeycomb: honey and milk are under your tongue; and the fragrance of your garments is like the fragrance of Lebanon.

²⁷ What I tell you in darkness, that speak in light: and what you hear in the ear, that preach upon the housetops.

³⁴ O generation of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

¹⁸ And Jesus came and spoke unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. ¹⁹ Go you therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit: ²⁰ Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

¹⁵ And he said unto them, Go you into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

⁹ Then spoke the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not your peace: ¹⁰ For I am with you, and no man shall set on you to hurt you: for I have many people in this city.

¹⁸ For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ has not worked by me, to make the Gentiles obedient, by word and deed, ¹⁹ Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ. ²⁰ Yea, so have I strived to preach the gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should build upon another man's foundation: ²¹ But as it is written, To whom he was not spoken of, they shall see: and they that have not heard shall understand.

²⁹ Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

⁶ And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.

¹⁷ I know also, my God, that you test the heart, and have pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of my heart I have willingly offered all these things: and now have I seen with joy your people, who are present here, to offer willingly unto you.

¹ [A prayer of David.] Hear the right, O LORD, attend unto my cry, give ear unto my prayer, that goes not out of feigned lips.

²⁹ The LORD is far from the wicked: but he hears the prayer of the righteous.

²⁷ The sacrifice of the wicked is abomination: how much more, when he brings it with a wicked mind?

⁹ He that turns away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.

¹ Guard your steps when you go to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil.

¹⁴ O my dove, in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the cliff, let me see your face, let me hear your voice; for sweet is your voice, and your countenance is lovely.

¹⁰ Hear the word of the LORD, you rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, you people of Gomorrah. ¹¹ To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? says the LORD: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of male goats. ¹² When you come to appear before me, who has required this at your hand, to trample my courts? ¹³ Bring no more vain offerings; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot endure; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting. ¹⁴ Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hates: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary of bearing them. ¹⁵ And when you spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you: yea, when you make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.

⁸ For I the LORD love justice, I hate robbery with a burnt offering; and I will direct their work in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them.

³ He that kills an ox is as if he slew a man; he that sacrifices a lamb, as if he breaks a dog's neck; he that offers a grain offering, as if he offered swine's blood; he that burns incense, as if he blessed an idol. Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delights in their abominations.

²⁰ To what purpose comes there to me incense from Sheba, and the sweet cane from a far country? your burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor your sacrifices sweet unto me.

²¹ Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Add your burnt offerings unto your sacrifices, and eat the flesh. ²² For I spoke not unto your fathers, nor commanded them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices: ²³ But this thing commanded I them, saying, Obey my voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be my people: and walk you in all the ways that I have commanded you, that it may be well unto you.

²¹ I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not take delight in your solemn assemblies. ²² Though you offer me burnt offerings and your grain offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings of your fatted beasts.

²⁴ God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

⁶ For the LORD knows the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.

⁸ The LORD opens the eyes of the blind: the LORD raises them that are bowed down: the LORD loves the righteous: ⁹ The LORD preserves the strangers; he relieves the fatherless and widow: but the way of the wicked he turns upside down.

¹⁹ The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.

⁴ A haughty look, a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin.

⁸ The way of man is perverse and strange: but as for the pure, his work is right.

²¹ He that follows after righteousness and mercy finds life, righteousness, and honor.

⁷ The way of the just is uprightness: you, most upright, do smooth the path of the just.

¹ Hearken to me, you that follow after righteousness, you that seek the LORD: look unto the rock from where you were hewn, and to the hole of the pit from which you were dug.

⁷ Hearken unto me, you that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law; fear you not the reproach of men, neither be you afraid of their revilings.

⁴ Yet I sent unto you all my servants the prophets, rising early and sending them, saying, Oh, do not this abominable thing that I hate.

³ Let us know, let us press on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.

¹³ You are of purer eyes than to behold evil, and can not look on iniquity: why do you look upon them that deal treacherously, and hold your tongue when the wicked devours the man that is more righteous than he?

¹³ Enter in at the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leads to destruction, and many there be who go in there:

¹¹ But you, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

²² Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, love, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

¹⁷ And it came to pass, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said unto him, Are you he that troubles Israel?

²⁰ And Ahab said to Elijah, Have you found me, O my enemy? And he answered, I have found you: because you have sold yourself to work evil in the sight of the LORD.

⁸ And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, Micaiah the son of Imlah, by whom we may inquire of the LORD: but I hate him; for he does not prophesy good concerning me, but evil. And Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.

³⁰ They would have none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.

¹² And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;

¹⁷ He is in the way of life that keeps instruction: but he that refuses reproof goes astray.

¹ Whosoever loves instruction loves knowledge: but he that hates reproof is senseless.

³⁵ They have stricken me, you shall say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

⁵ Why should you be stricken any more? you will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. ⁶ From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrefying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither soothed with ointment.

¹³ In your filthiness is lewdness: because I have purged you, and you were not purged, you shall not be purged from your filthiness any more, till I have caused my fury to rest upon you. ¹⁴ I the LORD have spoken it: it shall come to pass, and I will do it; I will not go back, neither will I spare, neither will I relent; according to your ways, and according to your doings, shall they judge you, says the Lord GOD.

²⁰ For everyone that does evil hates the light, neither comes to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.

⁷ The world cannot hate you; but me it hates, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.

⁷ But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.

³⁰ Then hear from heaven your dwelling place, and forgive, and render unto every man according unto all his ways, whose heart you know; (for you alone know the hearts of the children of men:)

⁶ Sheol is naked before him, and destruction has no covering.

⁹ Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just: for the righteous God tests the minds and hearts.

²¹ Shall not God search this out? for he knows the secrets of the heart.

⁸ If I ascend up into heaven, you are there: if I make my bed in Sheol, behold, you are there.

²⁰ Sheol and destruction are never full; so the eyes of man are never satisfied.

¹⁰ I the LORD search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

²⁴ But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, ²⁵ And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.

¹⁷ He said unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, do you love me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Do you love me? And he said unto him, Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you. Jesus said unto him, Feed my sheep.

¹⁸ I am he that lives, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive forevermore, Amen; and have the keys of hades and of death.

²³ And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he who searches the minds and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.

⁷ And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat, There is yet one man, by whom we may inquire of the LORD: but I hate him; for he never prophesied good unto me, but always evil: the same is Micaiah the son of Imla. And Jehoshaphat said, Let not the king say so.

¹⁴ Therefore they say unto God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of your ways.

⁷ He that reproves a scoffer gets for himself shame: and he that rebukes a wicked man gets himself injury. ⁸ Reprove not a scoffer, lest he hate you: rebuke a wise man, and he will love you.

¹⁰ Correction is grievous unto him that forsakes the way: and he that hates reproof shall die.

¹⁰ They hate him that rebukes in the gate, and they abhor him that speaks uprightly.

¹⁸ He that believes on him is not condemned: but he that believes not is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. ¹⁹ And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. ²⁰ For everyone that does evil hates the light, neither comes to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. ²¹ But he that does truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are worked in God.

³ For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they draw to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

² Therefore the king said unto me, Why is your countenance sad, seeing you are not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very much afraid,

²⁵ Heaviness in the heart of man makes him stoop: but a good word makes him glad.

¹⁵ All the days of the afflicted are evil: but he that is of a merry heart has a continual feast.

²² A merry heart does good like a medicine: but a broken spirit dries the bones.

¹ Let not your heart be troubled: you believe in God, believe also in me.

¹² For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have conducted ourselves in the world, and more abundantly toward you.

⁷ So that instead you ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with too much sorrow.

¹⁰ For godly sorrow works repentance to salvation not to be regretted: but the sorrow of the world works death.

⁶ And Solomon said, You have shown unto your servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before you in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with you; and you have kept for him this great kindness, that you have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. ⁷ And now, O LORD my God, you have made your servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in. ⁸ And your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude. ⁹ Give therefore your servant an understanding heart to judge your people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this your so great a people? ¹⁰ And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. ¹¹ And God said unto him, Because you have asked this thing, and have not asked for yourself long life; neither have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies; but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice; ¹² Behold, I have done according to your words: lo, I have given you a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like you before you, neither after you shall any arise like unto you.

⁹⁷ [Mem] O how love I your law! it is my meditation all the day.

¹⁰⁰ I understand more than the ancients, because I keep your precepts.

⁵ A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

⁹ Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

¹⁵ The heart of the prudent gets knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.

¹⁰ Who say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits:

²⁰ He feeds on ashes: a deceived heart has turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?

¹ Ephraim feeds on wind, and follows after the east wind: he daily increases lies and desolation; and they do make a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into Egypt.

¹¹ These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

¹⁸ But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever. Amen.

³⁵ And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted; and he said, I will go down into the grave unto my son mourning. Thus his father wept for him.

⁹ And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrimage are a hundred and thirty years: few and evil have the days of the years of my life been, and have not attained unto the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their pilgrimage.

⁷ For we are consumed by your anger, and by your wrath are we troubled. ⁸ You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your countenance. ⁹ For all our days are passed away in your wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told.

¹³ A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.

²² Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that has it: but the instruction of fools is folly.

²⁵ And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.

² By whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. ³ And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation works patience;

¹¹ And not only so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the reconciliation.

¹² Rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; constant in prayer;

⁵ For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds by Christ.

¹⁰ As sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.

⁶ In which you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you are in heaviness through manifold trials: ⁷ That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perishes, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: ⁸ Whom having not seen, you love; in whom, though now you see him not, yet believing, you rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory:

¹³ But rejoice, since you are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, you may be glad also with exceeding joy.

⁶ Better is the poor who walks in his uprightness, than he that is perverse in his ways, though he be rich.

¹⁰ And whatsoever my eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labor: and this was my reward of all my labor. ¹¹ Then I looked on all the works that my hands had made, and on the labor that I had expended on it: and, behold, all was vanity and like grasping the wind, and there was no profit under the sun.

¹⁸ Yea, I hated all my labor in which I had toiled under the sun: because I must leave it unto the man that shall be after me. ¹⁹ And who knows whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labor in which I have labored, and in which I have shown myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity. ²⁰ Therefore I gave my heart up to despair of all the labor in which I toiled under the sun. ²¹ For there is a man whose labor is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man that has not labored in it shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil. ²² For what has man for all his labor, and for the striving of his heart, with which he has labored under the sun? ²³ For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart takes not rest in the night. This is also vanity.

¹⁰ He that loves silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loves abundance, with increase: this is also vanity. ¹¹ When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: so what good is there to the owners, except the beholding of them with their eyes? ¹² The sleep of a laboring man is sweet, whether he eats little or much: but the abundance of the rich will not allow him to sleep.

⁶ But godliness with contentment is great gain.

¹ [A song of ascents. Of David.] Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! ² It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron's beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments; ³ As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life forevermore.

¹ Better is a dry morsel, with quietness, than a house full of sacrifices with strife.

¹⁹ It is better to dwell in the wilderness, than with a contentious and angry woman.

⁴ Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them who are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage.

²³ And bring here the fatted calf, and kill it; and let us eat, and be merry:

¹ If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affections and mercies,

¹⁶ And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love; and he that dwells in love dwells in God, and God in him.

⁸ And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray you, between me and you, and between my herdsmen and your herdsmen; for we are brethren. ⁹ Is not the whole land before you? separate yourself, I pray you, from me: if you will take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if you depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.

²⁴ And fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me let this iniquity be: and let your handmaid, I pray you, speak in your audience, and hear the words of your handmaid. ²⁵ Let not my lord, I pray you, regard this man of Belial, even Nabal: for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I your handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom you did send. ²⁶ Now therefore, my lord, as the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, seeing the LORD has held you back from coming to shed blood, and from avenging yourself with your own hand, now let your enemies, and they that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal. ²⁷ And now this blessing which your handmaid has brought unto my lord, let it even be given unto the young men that follow my lord. ²⁸ I pray you, forgive the trespass of your handmaid: for the LORD will certainly make my lord an enduring house; because my lord fights the battles of the LORD, and evil has not been found in you all your days. ²⁹ Yet a man has risen to pursue you, and to seek your soul: but the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living with the LORD your God; and the souls of your enemies, them shall he sling out, as out of the middle of a sling. ³⁰ And it shall come to pass, when the LORD shall have done to my lord according to all the good that he has spoken concerning you, and shall have appointed you ruler over Israel; ³¹ That this shall be no grief unto you, nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that you have shed blood without cause, or that my lord has avenged himself: but when the LORD shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember your handmaid. ³² And David said to Abigail, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me: ³³ And blessed be your advice, and blessed be you, who has kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with my own hand. ³⁴ For in very deed, as the LORD God of Israel lives, who has kept me back from hurting you, unless you had hastened and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light any remaining males. ³⁵ So David received of her hand that which she had brought him, and said unto her, Go up in peace to your house; see, I have hearkened to your voice, and have accepted your person. ³⁶ And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very drunk: therefore she told him nothing, little or much, until the morning light. ³⁷ But it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. ³⁸ And it came to pass about ten days later, that the LORD struck Nabal, that he died. ³⁹ And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the LORD, that has pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and has kept his servant from evil: for the LORD has returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head. And David sent and talked with Abigail, to take her to be his wife. ⁴⁰ And when the servants of David were come to Abigail to Carmel, they spoke unto her, saying, David sent us unto you, to take you to be his wife. ⁴¹ And she arose, and bowed herself on her face to the earth, and said, Behold, let your handmaid be a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord. ⁴² And Abigail hastened, and arose, and rode upon a donkey, with five of her young women that attended her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife. ⁴³ David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel; and they were also both of them his wives. ⁴⁴ But Saul had given Michal his daughter, David's wife, to Palti the son of Laish, who was of Gallim.

⁴³ And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more right in David than you: why then did you despise us, since our advice was first in bringing back our king? And the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel.

²⁹ He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalts folly.

¹ A soft answer turns away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

²⁸ A perverse man sows strife: and a whisperer separates best friends.

²¹ As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife.

⁴ If the spirit of the ruler rises up against you, leave not your post; for yielding pacifies great offences.

⁹ Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.

¹ And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Hellenists against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. ² Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reasonable that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. ³ Therefore, brethren, pick out from among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. ⁴ But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. ⁵ And the saying pleased the whole multitude: and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Prochorus, and Nicanor, and Timon, and Parmenas, and Nicolaus a proselyte of Antioch:

¹⁹ Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger: ²⁰ For the anger of man works not the righteousness of God.

¹⁴ But if you have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, boast not, and lie not against the truth. ¹⁵ This wisdom descends not from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. ¹⁶ For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.

¹ And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night. ² And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness! ³ And why has the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt?

⁷ And they spoke unto all the company of the children of Israel, saying, The land, which we passed through to search it, is an exceedingly good land. ⁸ If the LORD delights in us, then he will bring us into this land, and give it to us; a land which flows with milk and honey. ⁹ Only rebel not against the LORD, neither fear you the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defense is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not.

⁸ Lead me, O LORD, in your righteousness because of my enemies; make your way straight before my face.

⁸ Good and upright is the LORD: therefore will he teach sinners in the way. ⁹ The meek will he guide in justice: and the meek will he teach his way.

¹² What man is he that fears the LORD? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose.

¹¹ Teach me your way, O LORD, and lead me in a level path, because of my enemies.

⁶ In all your ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct your paths.

⁹ They are all plain to him that understands, and right to them that find knowledge.

⁵ Thorns and snares are in the way of the perverse: he that does keep his soul shall be far from them.

¹³ The slothful man says, There is a lion outside, I shall be slain in the streets.

¹³ The slothful man says, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets.

²¹ And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, This is the way, walk you in it, when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left.

⁸ And a highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for others: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein.

¹⁴ And it shall be said, Heap it up, heap it up, prepare the way, take up the stumbling block out of the way of my people.

¹² Honor your father and your mother: that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God gives you.

³ You shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and keep my sabbaths: I am the LORD your God.

⁴⁸ And also thus said the king, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, who has given one to sit on my throne this day, my eyes even seeing it.

⁹ Now therefore hold him not guiltless: for you are a wise man, and know what you ought to do unto him; but his gray head bring you down to the grave with blood.

⁷ And it came to pass, when Hiram heard the words of Solomon, that he rejoiced greatly, and said, Blessed be the LORD this day, who has given unto David a wise son over this great people.

¹⁵ My son, if your heart is wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine. ¹⁶ Yea, my inmost being shall rejoice, when your lips speak right things.

²² Hearken unto your father that begat you, and despise not your mother when she is old.

³ Whosoever loves wisdom rejoices his father: but he that keeps company with harlots wastes his substance.

¹⁷ The eye that mocks at his father, and despises to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young vultures shall eat it.

²² But you know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he has served with me in the gospel.

²⁸ And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

¹⁰ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endures forever.

²³ It is as sport to a fool to do wrong: but a man of understanding has wisdom.

¹² He that is void of wisdom despises his neighbor: but a man of understanding holds his peace.

⁹ Fools make a mockery of sin: but among the righteous there is favor.

¹⁶ A wise man fears, and departs from evil: but the fool rages, and is confident.

¹⁸ As a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death, ¹⁹ So is the man that deceives his neighbor, and says, Am I not jesting?

¹⁵ See then that you walk carefully, not as fools, but as wise,

¹³ Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him show out of a good life his works with meekness of wisdom.

¹⁴ Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.

¹⁸ Every purpose is established by counsel: and with good advice wage war.

⁶ Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is heavy upon him.

¹⁴ A man shall be satisfied with good by the fruit of his mouth: and the recompense of a man's hands shall be rendered unto him.

¹³ Righteous lips are the delight of kings; and they love him that speaks what is right.

²⁶ Every man shall kiss his lips who gives a right answer.

¹ To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

¹¹ You will show me the path of life: in your presence is fullness of joy; at your right hand there are pleasures forevermore.

²⁴ And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

¹⁸ For her house leads unto death, and her paths unto the dead.

⁵ Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on sheol.

²⁷ Her house is the way to sheol, going down to the chambers of death.

⁸ Reprove not a scoffer, lest he hate you: rebuke a wise man, and he will love you.

¹⁴ You shall beat him with the rod, and shall deliver his soul from sheol.

⁸ And unto this people you shall say, Thus says the LORD; Behold, I set before you the way of life, and the way of death.

¹⁴ Because narrow is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leads unto life, and few there be that find it.

⁶ Jesus said unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man comes unto the Father, but by me.

²⁰ For our citizenship is in heaven; from which also we look for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ:

¹ If you then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sits on the right hand of God. ² Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

¹⁷ For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, mighty, and awesome, who regards not persons, nor takes reward: ¹⁸ He executes justice for the fatherless and widow, and loves the stranger, in giving him food and clothing.

¹⁴ You shall not remove your neighbor's landmark, which the men of old time have set, in your inheritance which you shall inherit in the land that the LORD your God gives you to possess it.

¹¹ Put forth the rage of your wrath: and behold every one that is proud, and abase him. ¹² Look on every one that is proud, and bring him low; and tread down the wicked in their place. ¹³ Hide them in the dust together; and bind their faces in secret.

¹ [To the Chief Musician, a maschil. A Psalm of David, when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, and said unto him, David is come to the house of Ahimelech.] Why boast you yourself in evil, O mighty man? the goodness of God endures continually.

⁵ God shall likewise destroy you forever, he shall take you away, and pluck you out of your dwelling place, and root you out of the land of the living. Selah.

⁵ A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation. ⁶ God sets the solitary in families: he brings out those who are bound with chains: but the rebellious dwell in a dry land.

⁶ Though the LORD be high, yet has he respect unto the lowly: but the proud he knows from afar.

⁹ The LORD preserves the strangers; he relieves the fatherless and widow: but the way of the wicked he turns upside down.

⁷ The wicked are overthrown, and are not: but the house of the righteous shall stand.

¹¹ The house of the wicked shall be overthrown: but the tent of the upright shall flourish.

¹⁰ Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

¹² For the day of the LORD of hosts shall come upon everyone that is proud and lofty, and upon everyone that is lifted up; and he shall be brought low:

²⁰ But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him:

²⁷ Pure religion and undefiled before God the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

⁵ Likewise, you younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resists the proud, and gives grace to the humble.

¹⁴ Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

³⁰ The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom, and his tongue talks of justice. ³¹ The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.

¹⁶ These six things does the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: ¹⁷ A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, ¹⁸ A heart that devises wicked imaginations, feet that are swift in running to evil, ¹⁹ A false witness that speaks lies, and he that sows discord among brethren.

⁹ The thought of foolishness is sin: and the scoffer is an abomination to men.

¹⁴ O Jerusalem, wash your heart from wickedness, that you may be saved. How long shall your vain thoughts lodge within you?

³⁴ O generation of vipers, how can you, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. ³⁵ A good man out of the good treasure of the heart brings forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. ³⁶ But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. ³⁷ For by your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned.

¹⁹ For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

²¹ Moreover you shall provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:

⁸ And you shall take no bribe: for the bribe blinds the wise, and perverts the words of the righteous.

²⁶ Neither shall you bring an abomination into your house, lest you become an accursed thing like it: but you shall utterly detest it, and you shall utterly abhor it; for it is an accursed thing.

¹⁹ You shall not pervert judgment; you shall not show partiality, neither take a bribe: for a bribe does blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words of the righteous.

¹⁸ And you, by all means keep yourselves from the accursed thing, lest you make yourselves accursed, when you take of the accursed thing, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble it.

¹¹ Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: for they have even taken of the accursed thing, and have also stolen, and deceived also, and they have put it even among their own stuff. ¹² Therefore the children of Israel could not stand before their enemies, but turned their backs before their enemies, because they were accursed: neither will I be with you any more, unless you destroy the accursed from among you.

²⁴ And Joshua, and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, and the silver, and the garment, and the wedge of gold, and his sons, and his daughters, and his oxen, and his donkeys, and his sheep, and his tent, and all that he had: and they brought them unto the valley of Achor. ²⁵ And Joshua said, Why have you troubled us? the LORD shall trouble you this day. And all Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones.

³ And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after gain, and took bribes, and perverted justice. ⁴ Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah, ⁵ And said unto him, Behold, you are old, and your sons walk not in your ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.

²⁷ The leprosy therefore of Naaman shall cling unto you, and unto your descendants forever. And he went out from his presence a leper as white as snow.

¹⁹ So are the ways of everyone that is greedy of gain; which takes away the life of its owners.

¹⁹ As righteousness leads to life: so he that pursues evil pursues it to his own death.

²⁹ He that troubles his own house shall inherit the wind: and the fool shall be servant to the wise of heart.

²¹ An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning; but the end thereof shall not be blessed.

¹⁶ The prince that lacks understanding is also a great oppressor: but he that hates covetousness shall prolong his days.

⁴ The king by justice establishes the land: but he that receives bribes overthrows it.

⁸ Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no place, that they may dwell alone in the midst of the earth! ⁹ In my hearing said the LORD of hosts, Of a truth many houses shall be desolate, even great and fair, without inhabitant. ¹⁰ Yea, ten acres of vineyard shall yield one bath, and the seed of a homer shall yield an ephah.

¹⁵ He that walks righteously, and speaks uprightly; he that despises the gain of oppressions, that keeps his hands from the holding of bribes, that stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed, and shuts his eyes from seeing evil; ¹⁶ He shall dwell on high: his place of defense shall be the fortresses of rocks: bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure.

¹¹ As the partridge sits on eggs, and hatches them not; so he that gets riches, and not by right, shall leave them in the midst of his days, and at his end shall be a fool.

⁹ Woe to him that covets an evil gain for his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of ruin! ¹⁰ You have plotted shame to your house by cutting off many peoples, and have sinned against your soul. ¹¹ For the stone shall cry out from the wall, and the beam from the timber shall answer it.

³ Then said he unto me, This is the curse that goes forth over the face of the whole earth: for every one that steals shall be cut off according to the writing on this side; and every one that swears falsely shall be cut off according to the writing on that side. ⁴ I will bring it forth, says the LORD of hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief, and into the house of him that swears falsely by my name: and it shall remain in the midst of his house, and shall consume it with its timber and its stones.

²³ Then said the king, The one says, This is my son that lives, and your son is dead: and the other says, Nay; but your son is dead, and my son is living. ²⁴ And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king. ²⁵ And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other. ²⁶ Then spoke the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her heart yearned for her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and by no means slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor yours, but divide it. ²⁷ Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and by no means slay it: she is the mother of it. ²⁸ And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do justice.

¹⁹ In the multitude of words there lacks not sin: but he that refrains his lips is wise.

² The tongue of the wise uses knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools pours out foolishness.

¹¹ A fool utters all his mind: but a wise man keeps it in till afterwards.

²⁰ See you a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope for a fool than for him.

² Be not rash with your mouth, and let not your heart be hasty to utter anything before God: for God is in heaven, and you upon earth: therefore let your words be few.

⁶ Permit not your mouth to cause your flesh to sin; neither say before the angel, that it was an error: why should God be angry at your voice, and destroy the work of your hands?

¹² The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow him up. ¹³ The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness: and the end of his talk is wicked madness. ¹⁴ A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?

¹⁰ For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, especially they of the circumcision: ¹¹ Whose mouths must be stopped, who ruin whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for dishonest gain.

⁶ And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. ⁷ For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind: ⁸ But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

¹⁵ But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asks you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

¹⁸ For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that have just escaped from them who live in error.

¹ Why stand you afar off, O LORD? why hide you yourself in times of trouble?

⁴¹ They cried, but there was none to save them: even unto the LORD, but he answered them not.

¹⁵ The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry. ¹⁶ The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth. ¹⁷ The righteous cry, and the LORD hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles.

¹⁸ If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me: ¹⁹ But verily God has heard me; he has attended to the voice of my prayer.

²⁷ For, lo, they that are far from you shall perish: you have destroyed all them that go after idols, departing from you.

¹⁸ The LORD is near unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth. ¹⁹ He will fulfill the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them.

⁸ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

⁸ For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, says the LORD. ⁹ For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

⁴⁶ And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

³¹ Now we know that God hears not sinners: but if any man be a worshiper of God, and does his will, him he hears.

²⁶ Likewise the Spirit also helps our weakness: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought but the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. ²⁷ And he that searches the hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because he makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

¹² That at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: ¹³ But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off are made near by the blood of Christ.

¹⁶ Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that you may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. ¹⁷ Elijah was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth for three years and six months. ¹⁸ And he prayed again, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth brought forth its fruit.

¹² For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

⁸ And now for a little while grace has been shown from the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us security in his holy place, that our God may enlighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.

¹⁵ Blessed are the people that know the joyful sound: they shall walk, O LORD, in the light of your countenance.

⁸ It shall be health to your body, and strength to your bones.

⁹ The light of the righteous rejoices: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

²⁵ As cold water is to a thirsty soul, so is good news from a far country.

⁷ Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun:

¹¹ And the LORD shall guide you continually, and satisfy your soul in drought, and strengthen your bones: and you shall be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

¹⁰ And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. ¹¹ For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. ¹² And this shall be a sign unto you; You shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. ¹³ And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, ¹⁴ Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. ¹⁵ And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord has made known unto us. ¹⁶ And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. ¹⁷ And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. ¹⁸ And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. ¹⁹ But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

²³ And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God is its light, and the Lamb is its lamp.

⁵ And there shall be no night there; and they need no lamp, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God gives them light: and they shall reign forever and ever.

⁸ Reprove not a scoffer, lest he hate you: rebuke a wise man, and he will love you. ⁹ Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

²⁰ He that walks with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

⁵ A fool despises his father's instruction: but he that regards reproof is prudent.

³ Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.

³ Now you are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. ⁴ Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can you, except you abide in me.

¹⁹ They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

¹⁸ If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son, who will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them:

²⁰ And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard.

¹⁷ Seeing you hate instruction, and cast my words behind you.

⁷ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

²⁴ Because I have called, and you refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; ²⁵ But you have ignored all my counsel, and would have none of my reproof: ²⁶ I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear comes; ²⁷ When your terror comes as desolation, and your destruction comes as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish comes upon you. ²⁸ Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: ²⁹ Because they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: ³⁰ They would have none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. ³¹ Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. ³² For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them. ³³ But whosoever hearkens unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be secure from the fear of evil.

¹¹ And you mourn at the last, when your flesh and your body are consumed, ¹² And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; ¹³ And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined my ear to them that instructed me!

³³ Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not. ³⁴ Blessed is the man that hears me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. ³⁵ For whosoever finds me finds life, and shall obtain favor of the LORD. ³⁶ But he that sins against me wrongs his own soul: all they that hate me love death.

¹⁴ The heart of him that has understanding seeks knowledge: but the mouth of fools feeds on foolishness.

²¹ Folly is joy to him that is destitute of wisdom: but a man of understanding walks uprightly.

¹⁶ Why is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he has no heart for it?

¹ He, that being often reproved hardens his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

⁵ Why should you be stricken any more? you will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint.

³ O LORD, are not your eyes upon the truth? you have stricken them, but they have not grieved; you have consumed them, but they have refused to receive correction: they have made their faces harder than a rock; they have refused to return.

²⁴ Therefore whosoever hears these sayings of mine, and does them, I will liken him unto a wise man, who built his house upon a rock: ²⁵ And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. ²⁶ And every one that hears these sayings of mine, and does them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand: ²⁷ And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

¹⁵ Looking diligently lest any man fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

²² But be you doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

¹⁹ As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

¹¹ Come, you children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD.

¹³ The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogance, and the evil way, and the perverse mouth, do I hate.

¹² Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honor is humility.

⁶ Put not forth yourself in the presence of the king, and stand not in the place of great men: ⁷ For better it is that it be said unto you, Come up here; than that you should be put lower in the presence of the prince whom your eyes have seen.

²³ A man's pride shall bring him low: but honor shall uphold the humble in spirit.

¹¹ For whosoever exalts himself shall be abased; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted.

⁵ Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: ⁶ Who, being in the form of God, thought it not a thing to be grasped to be equal with God: ⁷ But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: ⁸ And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. ⁹ Therefore God also has highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: ¹⁰ That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; ¹¹ And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

¹⁰ Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.
