¹ Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said, ² Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind? ³ Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches with which he can do no good? ⁴ Yea, you cast off fear, and restrain prayer before God. ⁵ For your mouth utters your iniquity, and you choose the tongue of the crafty. ⁶ Your own mouth condemns you, and not I: yea, your own lips testify against you. ⁷ Are you the first man that was born? or were you made before the hills? ⁸ Have you heard the council of God? and do you limit wisdom to yourself? ⁹ What know you, that we know not? what understand you, which is not in us? ¹⁰ With us are both the gray headed and very aged men, much older than your father. ¹¹ Are the consolations of God too small for you? on the word that deals gently with you? ¹² Why does your heart carry you away? and what do your eyes wink at, ¹³ That you turn your spirit against God, and let such words go out of your mouth? ¹⁴ What is man, that he should be clean? and he who is born of a woman, that he should be righteous? ¹⁵ Behold, he puts no trust in his holy ones; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight. ¹⁶ How much more abominable and filthy is man, who drinks iniquity like water? ¹⁷ I will show you, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare; ¹⁸ Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it: ¹⁹ Unto whom alone the land was given, and no stranger passed among them. ²⁰ The wicked man travails with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden for the oppressor. ²¹ A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him. ²² He believes not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for by the sword. ²³ He wanders abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knows that the day of darkness is ready at his hand. ²⁴ Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready for battle. ²⁵ For he stretches out his hand against God, and strengthens himself against the Almighty. ²⁶ He runs stubbornly against him, with his heavily embossed shield. ²⁷ Because he covers his face with his fatness, and makes heavy fat on his waist. ²⁸ And he dwells in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabits, which are ready to become heaps. ²⁹ He shall not be rich, neither shall his wealth continue, neither shall he overspread the earth with it. ³⁰ He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away. ³¹ Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for futility shall be his reward. ³² It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green. ³³ He shall shake off his unripe grapes like the vine, and shall cast off his blossom like the olive. ³⁴ For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery. ³⁵ They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their heart prepares deceit.

¹¹ Now when Job’s three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him, they came every one from his own place; Eliphaz the Temanite, and Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Naamathite: for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

¹ Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said,

⁷ And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against you, and against your two friends: for you have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job has.

⁹ So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went, and did according as the LORD commanded them: the LORD also accepted Job.

²⁶ Do you intend to reprove words, and the speeches of one that is desperate, which are as wind?

² How long will you speak these things? and how long shall the words of your mouth be like a strong wind?

² Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified? ³ Should your lies make men hold their peace? and when you mock, shall no man make you ashamed?

² What you know, the same do I know also: I am not inferior unto you.

¹ Ephraim feeds on wind, and follows after the east wind: he daily increases lies and desolation; and they do make a covenant with the Assyrians, and oil is carried into Egypt.

¹³ Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him show out of a good life his works with meekness of wisdom.

⁴ But you are forgers of lies, you are all physicians of no value. ⁵ O that you would altogether hold your peace! and it should be your wisdom.

² I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are you all. ³ Shall vain words have an end? or what emboldens you that you answer?

¹ But Job answered and said, ² How have you helped him that is without power? how save you the arm that has no strength? ³ How have you counseled him that has no wisdom? and how have you plentifully declared the thing as it is?

¹³ Your words have been strong against me, says the LORD. Yet you say, What have we spoken so much against you? ¹⁴ You have said, It is vain to serve God: and what profit is it that we have kept his ordinance, and that we have walked in mourning before the LORD of hosts? ¹⁵ And now we call the proud happy; yea, they that work wickedness are raised up; yea, they that test God are even delivered.

³⁶ But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. ³⁷ For by your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned.

⁶ Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer every man.

⁴ He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting over questions and disputes of words, out of which comes envy, strife, railings, evil suspicions, ⁵ Perverse wranglings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw yourself.

¹³ So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that was a medium, to seek council; ¹⁴ And inquired not of the LORD: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.

⁵ But now it is come upon you, and you faint; it touches you, and you are troubled. ⁶ Is not this your fear, your confidence, your hope, and the uprightness of your ways?

⁸ I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause:

¹⁴ To him that is afflicted pity should be shown from his friend; even though he forsakes the fear of the Almighty.

¹⁰ Will he delight himself in the Almighty? will he always call upon God?

¹ [To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David the servant of the LORD.] The transgression of the wicked says within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes. ² For he flatters himself in his own eyes, until his iniquity is found to be hateful. ³ The words of his mouth are iniquity and deceit: he has ceased to be wise, and to do good.

¹²⁶ It is time for you, LORD, to work: for they have made void your law.

¹⁴ And they have not cried unto me with their heart, when they wailed upon their beds: they assemble themselves for grain and wine, and they rebel against me.

¹⁰ And a man's uncle shall take him up, and he that burns him, to bring out the bones out of the house, and shall say unto him that is by the sides of the house, Is there yet any with you? and he shall say, No. Then shall he say, Hold your tongue: for we may not make mention of the name of the LORD.

⁶ And those that are turned back from the LORD; and those that have not sought the LORD, nor inquired for him.

¹ And he spoke a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;

³¹ Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

²¹ I do not nullify the grace of God: for if righteousness comes by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

¹³ He takes the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the cunning is quickly ended.

²² This is one thing, therefore I said it, He destroys the blameless and the wicked. ²³ If the scourge slays suddenly, he will laugh at the plight of the innocent. ²⁴ The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covers the faces of its judges; if not he, who then is it?

⁶ The tents of robbers prosper, and they that provoke God are secure; into whose hand God brings abundantly.

¹⁹ You give your mouth to evil, and your tongue frames deceit. ²⁰ You sit and speak against your brother; you slander your own mother's son.

² Your tongue devises evil; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully. ³ You love evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah. ⁴ You love all devouring words, O you deceitful tongue.

³ Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words:

² Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, and from a deceitful tongue. ³ What shall be given unto you? or what shall be done unto you, you false tongue?

³ And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies: but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, says the LORD. ⁴ Take you heed everyone of his neighbor, and trust you not in any brother: for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbor will walk with slanders. ⁵ And they will deceive everyone his neighbor, and will not speak the truth: they have taught their tongue to speak lies, and weary themselves to commit iniquity.

⁸ Their tongue is as an arrow shot out; it speaks deceit: one speaks peaceably to his neighbor with his mouth, but in his heart he lies in wait.

²¹ For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, ²² Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, licentiousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

⁴⁵ A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

²⁶ If any man among you seems to be religious, and bridles not his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is vain.

⁵ Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasts great things. Behold, how great a forest a little fire kindles! ⁶ And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. ⁷ For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind: ⁸ But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

²⁰ If I justify myself, my own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am blameless, it shall also prove me perverse.

⁸ Surely you have spoken in my hearing, and I have heard the voice of your words, saying, ⁹ I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me. ¹⁰ Behold, he finds occasions against me, he counts me for his enemy, ¹¹ He puts my feet in the stocks, he marks all my paths. ¹² Behold, in this you are not just: I will answer you, for God is greater than man.

⁵ For Job has said, I am righteous: and God has taken away my justice. ⁶ Should I lie concerning my right? my wound is incurable though I am without transgression. ⁷ What man is like Job, who drinks up scorn like water? ⁸ Who goes in company with the workers of iniquity, and walks with wicked men. ⁹ For he has said, It profits a man nothing that he should delight himself with God.

² Think you this to be right, that you said, My righteousness is more than God’s? ³ For you said, What advantage will it be unto you? and, What profit shall I have, if I be cleansed from my sin?

⁸ Will you also annul my judgment? will you condemn me, that you may be righteous?

³ Who is he that hides counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered what I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.

⁸ So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves: all that see them shall flee away.

³⁷ For by your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned.

⁶⁵ Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, He has spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? behold, now you have heard his blasphemy.

²² And he said unto him, Out of your own mouth will I judge you, you wicked servant. You knew that I was a severe man, taking up what I laid not down, and reaping what I did not sow:

¹ And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bore Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.

¹² With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding.

¹⁰ With us are both the gray headed and very aged men, much older than your father.

⁴ Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if you have understanding. ⁵ Who has determined the measures thereof, if you know? or who has stretched the line upon it? ⁶ On what are its foundations fastened? or who laid its cornerstone; ⁷ When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? ⁸ Or who shut up the sea with doors, when it broke forth, as if it had issued out of the womb? ⁹ When I made the clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band, ¹⁰ And prescribed bounds for it, and set bars and doors, ¹¹ And said, Thus far shall you come, but no farther: and here shall your proud waves be stopped? ¹² Have you commanded the morning since your days began; and caused the dawn to know its place; ¹³ That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it? ¹⁴ It is turned as clay under the seal; and they stand out as a garment. ¹⁵ And from the wicked their light is withheld, and the uplifted arm shall be broken. ¹⁶ Have you entered into the springs of the sea? or have you walked in search of the depths? ¹⁷ Have the gates of death been revealed unto you? or have you seen the doors of the shadow of death? ¹⁸ Have you perceived the breadth of the earth? declare if you know it all. ¹⁹ Where is the way where light dwells? and as for darkness, where is its place, ²⁰ That you should take it to its domain, and that you should know the paths to its home? ²¹ Do you know it, because you were born then? or because the number of your days is great? ²² Have you entered into the treasury of the snow? or have you seen the treasury of the hail, ²³ Which I have reserved against the time of trouble, against the day of battle and war? ²⁴ By what way is the light distributed, which scatters the east wind upon the earth? ²⁵ Who has divided a channel for the overflowing of waters, or a way for the lightning of thunder; ²⁶ To cause it to rain on the earth, where no man is; on the wilderness, in which there is no man; ²⁷ To satisfy the desolate and waste ground; and to cause the bud of the tender grass to spring forth? ²⁸ Has the rain a father? or who has begotten the drops of dew? ²⁹ Out of whose womb came the ice? and the frost from heaven, who has given it birth? ³⁰ The waters harden like a stone, and the face of the deep is frozen. ³¹ Can you bind the cluster of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion? ³² Can you bring forth Mazzaroth in its season? or can you guide Arcturus with its children? ³³ Know you the ordinances of heaven? can you set their dominion in the earth? ³⁴ Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover you? ³⁵ Can you send lightnings, that they may go, and say unto you, Here we are? ³⁶ Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? or who has given understanding to the heart? ³⁷ Who can number the clouds by wisdom? or who can pour out the water skins of heaven, ³⁸ When the dust grows into clumps, and the clods cleave fast together? ³⁹ Will you hunt the prey for the lion? or satisfy the appetite of the young lions, ⁴⁰ When they crouch in their dens, and abide in their lairs to lie in wait? ⁴¹ Who provides for the raven its food? when its young ones cry unto God, they wander about for lack of food.

² Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, you are God.

²² The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. ²³ I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, before the earth was. ²⁴ When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water. ²⁵ Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:

²⁹ The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

⁶ And that he would show you the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! Know therefore that God exacts of you less than your iniquity deserves.

² No doubt you are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.

⁵ O that you would altogether hold your peace! and it should be your wisdom. ⁶ Hear now my reasoning, and hearken to the pleadings of my lips.

⁴ As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tent;

¹⁴ The secret of the LORD is with them that fear him; and he will show them his covenant.

³² For the perverse is abomination to the LORD: but his secret is with the righteous.

¹⁸ For who has stood in the counsel of the LORD, and has perceived and heard his word? who has marked his word, and heard it?

⁷ Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, unless he reveals his secret unto his servants the prophets.

²⁵ At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hid these things from the wise and prudent, and have revealed them unto babes.

¹¹ He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

³⁵ That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.

¹⁵ From now on I call you not servants; for the servant knows not what his lord does: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.

³⁴ For who has known the mind of the Lord? or who has been his counselor?

²⁵ Now to him who is able to establish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began, ²⁶ But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:

⁹ But as it is written, Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for them that love him. ¹⁰ But God has revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searches all things, yea, the deep things of God. ¹¹ For what man knows the things of a man, except the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knows no man, but the Spirit of God.

¹⁶ For who has known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

³ But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you: yea, who knows not such things as these?

³ How have you counseled him that has no wisdom? and how have you plentifully declared the thing as it is? ⁴ To whom have you uttered words? and whose spirit came from you?

⁷ Do you look on things after the outward appearance? If any man trusts to himself that he is Christ's, let him of himself think this again, that, as he is Christ's, even so are we Christ's.

⁵ For I suppose I was not the least behind the very chief apostles.

²¹ I speak as concerning reproach, as though we had been weak. But in whatsoever way any is bold, (I speak foolishly,) I am bold also. ²² Are they Hebrews? so am I. Are they Israelites? so am I. Are they the descendants of Abraham? so am I. ²³ Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labors more abundant, in stripes beyond measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths often. ²⁴ Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes less one. ²⁵ Three times was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, three times I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; ²⁶ In journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by my own countrymen, in perils by the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; ²⁷ In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness. ²⁸ Besides those things that are outside, that which comes upon me daily, the care of all the churches. ²⁹ Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not? ³⁰ If I must boast, I will boast of the things which concern my weaknesses.

⁷ Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations: ask your father, and he will show you; your elders, and they will tell you.

⁸ For inquire, I pray you, of the former age, and prepare yourself to the findings of their fathers: ⁹ (For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days upon earth are a shadow:) ¹⁰ Shall not they teach you, and tell you, and utter words out of their heart?

²⁰ He takes away the speech of the trustworthy, and takes away the understanding of the aged.

⁶ And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said, I am young, and you are very old; therefore I was afraid, and dared not show you my opinion. ⁷ I said, Days should speak, and multitude of years should teach wisdom.

³¹ White hair is a crown of glory, if it is found in the way of righteousness.

²⁴ But Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah went near, and struck Micaiah on the cheek, and said, Which way went the spirit of the LORD from me to speak unto you?

⁸ I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause: ⁹ Who does great things and unsearchable; marvelous things without number: ¹⁰ Who gives rain upon the earth, and sends waters upon the fields: ¹¹ To set up on high those that are low; that those who mourn may be lifted to safety. ¹² He frustrates the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their plans. ¹³ He takes the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the cunning is quickly ended. ¹⁴ They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope in the noonday as in the night. ¹⁵ But he saves the poor from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty. ¹⁶ So the poor has hope, and injustice shuts her mouth. ¹⁷ Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects: therefore despise not the chastening of the Almighty: ¹⁸ For he bruises, and binds up: he wounds, and his hands make whole. ¹⁹ He shall deliver you in six troubles: yea, in seven there shall no evil touch you. ²⁰ In famine he shall redeem you from death: and in war from the power of the sword. ²¹ You shall be hid from the scourge of the tongue: neither shall you be afraid of destruction when it comes. ²² At destruction and famine you shall laugh: neither shall you be afraid of the beasts of the earth. ²³ For you shall be in covenant with the stones of the field: and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with you. ²⁴ And you shall know that your tabernacle shall be in peace; and you shall visit your habitation, and shall find nothing amiss. ²⁵ You shall know also that your descendants shall be many, and your offspring as the grass of the earth. ²⁶ You shall come to your grave in a full age, like a shock of grain comes in in its season.

¹³ If you prepare your heart, and stretch out your hands toward him; ¹⁴ If iniquity be in your hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in your tents. ¹⁵ For then shall you lift up your face without spot; yea, you shall be steadfast, and shall not fear: ¹⁶ Because you shall forget your misery, and remember it as waters that pass away: ¹⁷ And your life shall be brighter than the noonday; you shall shine forth, you shall be as the morning. ¹⁸ And you shall be secure, because there is hope; yea, you shall dig about you, and take your rest in safety. ¹⁹ Also you shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid; yea, many shall entreat your favor.

⁸ Have you heard the council of God? and do you limit wisdom to yourself?

¹⁶ Even so would he have removed you out of the distress into a broad place, where there is no restraint; and that which should be set on your table should be full of richness.

³ Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; ⁴ Who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them who are in any trouble, by the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted of God. ⁵ For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also abounds by Christ.

⁶ Nevertheless God, who comforts those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus;

¹³ If you prepare your heart, and stretch out your hands toward him;

² Are there not mockers with me? and does not my eye continue in their provocation?

¹⁹ Let not them that are my enemies wrongfully rejoice over me: neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause.

¹³ He winks with his eyes, he signals with his feet, he motions with his fingers;

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in your youth; and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth, and walk in the ways of your heart, and in the sight of your eyes: but know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.

³ But Peter said, Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back part of the price of the land? ⁴ While it remained, was it not your own? and after it was sold, was it not in your own power? why have you conceived this thing in your heart? you have not lied unto men, but unto God.

²² Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you.

¹⁴ But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. ¹⁵ Then when lust has conceived, it brings forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, brings forth death.

⁴ He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who has hardened himself against him, and has prospered?

³ Is it good unto you that you should oppress, that you should despise the work of your hands, and smile upon the counsel of the wicked?

¹³ Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit.

¹³ Your words have been strong against me, says the LORD. Yet you say, What have we spoken so much against you?

⁷ Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. ⁸ So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

² For in many things we all offend. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. ³ Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. ⁴ Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven by fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small rudder, wherever the pilot desires. ⁵ Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasts great things. ⁴⁶ If they sin against you, (for there is no man that sins not,) and you are angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captives unto the land of the enemy, far or near;

³⁶ If they sin against you, (for there is no man who sins not,) and you are angry with them, and deliver them over to their enemies, and they carry them away captives unto a land far or near;

² I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just before God?

⁴ Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? no one.

⁴ How then can man be justified with God? or how can he be clean that is born of a woman? ⁵ Behold even to the moon, and it shines not; yea, the stars are not pure in his sight. ⁶ How much less man, that is a worm? and the son of man, who is a worm?

³ They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that does good, no, not one.

⁵ Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.

⁹ Who can say, I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?

²⁰ For there is not a just man upon earth, that does good, and sins not.

²⁹ Lo, this only have I found, that God has made man upright; but they have sought out many devices.

⁶ That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

¹⁸ For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwells no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

²² But the scripture has consigned all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

² In which in time past you walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience: ³ Among whom also we all had our behavior in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

⁸ If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. ⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ¹⁰ If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

¹⁸ Behold, he put no trust in his servants; and his angels he charged with folly:

¹ Call now, if there be any that will answer you; and to which of the holy ones will you turn?

⁵ Behold even to the moon, and it shines not; yea, the stars are not pure in his sight.

² Above it stood the seraphim: each one had six wings; with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he did fly. ³ And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory. ⁴ And the posts of the door were shaken at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke. ⁵ Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.

¹⁹ How much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed before the moth?

¹² Though wickedness be sweet in his mouth, though he hide it under his tongue;

⁷ What man is like Job, who drinks up scorn like water?

⁶ Therefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.

¹ [To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.] The fool has said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that does good. ² The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. ³ They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that does good, no, not one.

³ Every one of them is gone back: they are altogether become filthy; there is none that does good, no, not one.

²⁸ An ungodly witness scorns judgment: and the mouth of the wicked devours iniquity.

²⁸ And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not proper; ²⁹ Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, ³⁰ Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

⁹ What then? are we better than they? No, in no way: for we have before proved both Jews and Greeks, that they are all under sin; ¹⁰ As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: ¹¹ There is none that understands, there is none that seeks after God. ¹² They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that does good, no, not one. ¹³ Their throat is an open sepulcher; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: ¹⁴ Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness: ¹⁵ Their feet are swift to shed blood: ¹⁶ Destruction and misery are in their ways: ¹⁷ And the way of peace have they not known: ¹⁸ There is no fear of God before their eyes. ¹⁹ Now we know that whatsoever things the law says, it says to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

³ For we ourselves also were once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

²⁷ Lo this, we have searched it out, so it is; hear it, and know you it for your good.

¹ Therefore, Job, I pray you, hear my speeches, and hearken to all my words.

² Hear my words, O you wise men; and give ear unto me, you that have knowledge.

² Bear with me a little, and I will show you that I have yet to speak on God’s behalf.

⁸ For inquire, I pray you, of the former age, and prepare yourself to the findings of their fathers:

¹⁸ Now also when I am old and gray headed, O God, forsake me not; until I have showed your strength unto this generation, and your power to every one that is to come.

³ Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. ⁴ We will not hide them from their children, showing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he has done. ⁵ For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children: ⁶ That the generation to come might know them, even the children who should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:

¹⁹ The living, the living, he shall praise you, as I do this day: the father to the children shall make known your truth.

²⁵ And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided; and his brother's name was Joktan.

³² These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations: and by these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood.

⁸ When the Most High divided to the nations their inheritance, when he separated the sons of Adam, he set the bounds of the people according to the number of the children of Israel.

¹⁷ So shall you know that I am the LORD your God dwelling in Zion, my holy mountain: then shall Jerusalem be holy, and there shall no strangers pass through her any more.

¹ Why, seeing times are not hidden from the Almighty, do they that know him not see his days?

¹³ This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, which they shall receive of the Almighty.

³ You turn man to destruction; and say, Return, you children of men. ⁴ For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night.

¹² So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

³ This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry. ²⁰ But God said unto him, You fool, this night your soul shall be required of you: then whose shall those things be, which you have prepared? ²¹ So is he that lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

²² For we know that the whole creation groans and travails in pain together until now.

¹ Come now, you rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. ² Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. ³ Your gold and silver is rusted; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as if it were fire. You have heaped treasure together for the last days. ⁴ Behold, the hire of the laborers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, cries: and the cries of them who have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of hosts. ⁵ You have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; you have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. ⁶ You have condemned and killed the just; and he does not resist you.

⁹ And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where are you? ¹⁰ And he said, I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

³⁶ And upon them that are left alive of you I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursues.

³⁶ And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very drunk: therefore she told him nothing, little or much, until the morning light. ³⁷ But it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. ³⁸ And it came to pass about ten days later, that the LORD struck Nabal, that he died.

⁶ For the Lord had made the army of the Syrians to hear a noise of chariots, and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great army: and they said one to another, Lo, the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites, and the kings of the Egyptians, to come upon us.

¹³ And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house: ¹⁴ And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys feeding beside them: ¹⁵ And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone am escaped to tell you. ¹⁶ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God has fallen from heaven, and has burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I alone am escaped to tell you. ¹⁷ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone am escaped to tell you. ¹⁸ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house: ¹⁹ And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I alone am escaped to tell you.

¹¹ Terrors shall make him afraid on every side, and shall drive him to his feet.

⁵ That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment? ⁶ Though his haughtiness mounts up to the heavens, and his head reaches unto the clouds; ⁷ Yet he shall perish forever like his own refuse: they who have seen him shall say, Where is he?

²² In the fullness of his sufficiency he shall be in distress: every hand of the wicked shall come upon him. ²³ When he is about to fill his belly, God shall cast the fury of his wrath upon him, and shall rain it upon him while he is eating. ²⁴ He shall flee from the iron weapon, and the bow of bronze shall strike him through. ²⁵ It is drawn, and comes out of the body; yea, the glittering sword comes out of his gall: terrors are upon him.

²⁰ Terrors take hold on him as waters, a tempest steals him away in the night.

¹⁸ Surely you did set them in slippery places: you cast them down into destruction. ¹⁹ How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors. ²⁰ As a dream when one awakes; so, O Lord, when you awake, you shall despise their image.

⁷ When the wicked spring as the grass, and when all the workers of iniquity do flourish; it is that they shall be destroyed forever:

²⁶ I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear comes; ²⁷ When your terror comes as desolation, and your destruction comes as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish comes upon you.

²¹ And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them. ²² And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man. ²³ And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and died.

¹⁰ Neither murmur you, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed by the destroyer.

³ For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction comes upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

¹¹ And they had a king over them, who is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue he has the name Apollyon.

³³ And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger came down unto him: and he said, Behold, this evil is of the LORD; why should I wait for the LORD any longer?

¹¹ What is my strength, that I should hope? and what is my end, that I should prolong my life?

¹⁶ If I had called, and he had answered me; yet would I not believe that he had hearkened unto my voice.

²⁹ Be yourselves afraid of the sword: for wrath brings the punishment of the sword, that you may know there is a judgment.

¹⁴ If his children are multiplied, it is for the sword: and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.

²¹ And they shall pass through it, hardpressed and hungry: and it shall come to pass, that when they shall be hungry, they shall be enraged, and curse their king and their God, and look upward. ²² And they shall look unto the earth; and behold trouble and darkness, gloom of anguish; and they shall be driven into darkness.

⁵ And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.

¹² When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield unto you its strength; a fugitive and a wanderer shall you be in the earth.

⁵ Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the flame of his fire shall not shine. ⁶ The light shall be dark in his tent, and his lamp shall be put out with him.

¹² His strength shall be hunger-bitten, and destruction shall be ready at his side.

¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world.

³ From want and famine they are gaunt; fleeing of late into the wilderness, desolate and waste. ⁴ Who pick mallows by the bushes, and juniper roots for their food.

¹⁵ Let them wander up and down for food, and growl if they are not satisfied.

¹⁰ Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places.

⁸ But if a man lives many years, and rejoices in them all; yet let him remember the days of darkness; for they shall be many. All that comes is vanity.

⁶ We have given the hand to the Egyptians, and to the Assyrians, to be satisfied with bread.

⁹ We got our bread at the peril of our lives because of the sword in the wilderness.

² A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness, as the morning spread upon the mountains: a great and strong people; there has not been ever the like, neither shall be any more after it, through the years of many generations.

²⁰ Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it?

¹⁵ That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of ruin and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness,

²⁷ But a certain fearful expectation of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

³⁷ They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; ³⁸ (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

² Oh that my grief were thoroughly weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together! ³ For now it would be heavier than the sand of the sea: therefore my words are swallowed up. ⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison thereof drinks up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.

¹⁴³ Trouble and anguish have taken hold on me: yet your commandments are my delights.

²⁷ When your terror comes as desolation, and your destruction comes as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish comes upon you.

¹¹ So shall your poverty come upon you like a vagabond, and your want like an armed man.

³⁴ So shall your poverty come like a robber; and your want like an armed man.

³ I have commanded my sanctified ones, I have also called my mighty ones for my anger, even them that rejoice in my exaltation.

³⁷ And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very distressed. ³⁸ Then said he unto them, My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even unto death: tarry you here, and watch with me.

⁹ Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that does evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Greek;

² And Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go. ³ And they said, The God of the Hebrews has met with us: let us go, we pray you, three days' journey into the desert, and sacrifice unto the LORD our God; lest he fall upon us with pestilence, or with the sword.

¹⁷ And yet exalt you yourself against my people, that you will not let them go?

²³ And if you will not be reformed by me by these things, but will walk contrary unto me;

⁷ And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God has come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there has not been such a thing before this. ⁸ Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that struck the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness. ⁹ Be strong, and conduct yourselves like men, O you Philistines, that you be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: conduct yourselves like men, and fight.

⁶ Why then do you harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? when he had worked wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed?

⁹ Then he shows them their work, and their transgressions, that they have exceeded.

⁹ Have you an arm like God? or can you thunder with a voice like him? ¹⁰ Deck yourself now with majesty and splendor; and array yourself with glory and beauty. ¹¹ Put forth the rage of your wrath: and behold every one that is proud, and abase him.

⁷ Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.

⁹ They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walks through the earth.

¹¹ And they say, How does God know? and is there knowledge in the most High?

⁹ Be shattered, O you people, you shall be broken in pieces; and give ear, all you from far countries: gird yourselves, and you shall be broken in pieces; gird yourselves, and you shall be broken in pieces. ¹⁰ Take counsel together, and it shall come to nothing; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God is with us.

¹² Therefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord has performed his whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks. ¹³ For he says, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am prudent: and I have removed the boundaries of the people, and have robbed their treasures, and I have put down the inhabitants like a valiant man: ¹⁴ And my hand has found as a nest the riches of the people: and as one gathers eggs that are left, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped.

⁴ Fury is not in me: who would set the briers and thorns against me in battle? I would go through them, I would burn them together.

⁴ Who has performed and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I the LORD, the first, and with the last; I am he. ⁵ The coastlands saw it, and feared; the ends of the earth were afraid, drew near, and came. ⁶ They helped everyone his neighbor; and everyone said to his brother, Be of good courage. ⁷ So the carpenter encouraged the goldsmith, and he that smoothes with the hammer him that struck the anvil, saying, It is ready for the soldering: and he fastened it with pegs, that it should not be moved.

²³ But have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before you, and you, and your lords, your wives, and your concubines, have drunk wine in them; and you have praised the gods of silver, and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand your breath is, and whose are all your ways, have you not glorified:

⁵ And he said, Who are you, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom you persecute: it is hard for you to kick against the goads.

¹ Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to persecute certain of the church.

²³ And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and died.

⁸ Judah, you are he whom your brothers shall praise: your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies; your father's children shall bow down before you.

²² And in the time of his distress did he trespass yet more against the LORD: this is that king Ahaz.

¹³ Know you not what I and my fathers have done unto all the people of other lands? were the gods of the nations of those lands in any way able to deliver their lands out of my hand? ¹⁴ Who was there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of my hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of my hand? ¹⁵ Now therefore let not Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you in this way, neither yet believe him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of my hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of my hand? ¹⁶ And his servants spoke yet more against the LORD God, and against his servant Hezekiah. ¹⁷ He wrote also letters to revile the LORD God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their people out of my hand, so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of my hand.

¹² I was at ease, but he has broken me asunder: he has also taken me by my neck, and shaken me to pieces, and set me up for his mark.

⁴⁰ You have also given me the necks of my enemies; that I might destroy them that hate me.

¹⁵ But Jeshurun grew fat, and kicked: you are grown fat, you are grown thick, you are covered with fatness; then he forsook God who made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation.

¹⁰ But as for you all, do you return, and come now: for I cannot find one wise man among you.

¹⁰ They are enclosed in their own fat hearts: with their mouth they speak proudly.

⁷ Their eyes stand out with abundance: they have more than heart could wish.

³¹ The wrath of God came upon them, and slew the strongest of them, and struck down the chosen men of Israel.

¹⁰ Make the heart of this people dull, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and return, and be healed.

²⁸ They have grown fat, they shine: yea, they pass over the deeds of the wicked: they judge not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, yet they prosper; and the right of the needy do they not defend.

¹⁴ With kings and counselors of the earth, who built desolate places for themselves;

¹⁵ They shall dwell in his tent, who are none of his: brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation.

⁸ Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no place, that they may dwell alone in the midst of the earth! ⁹ In my hearing said the LORD of hosts, Of a truth many houses shall be desolate, even great and fair, without inhabitant. ¹⁰ Yea, ten acres of vineyard shall yield one bath, and the seed of a homer shall yield an ephah.

¹¹ And I will make Jerusalem a heap of ruins, and a den of jackals; and I will make the cities of Judah desolate, without an inhabitant.

¹⁸ Micah the Moresthite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king of Judah, and spoke to all the people of Judah, saying, Thus says the LORD of hosts; Zion shall be plowed like a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps of ruins, and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest.

³⁷ And Babylon shall become a heap, a dwelling place for jackals, an astonishment, and a hissing, without an inhabitant.

¹² Therefore shall Zion for your sake be plowed like a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps of ruins, and the mountain of the house like the high places of the forest.

¹⁸ Who is a God like unto you, who pardons iniquity, and passes by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retains not his anger forever, because he delights in mercy.

²² In the fullness of his sufficiency he shall be in distress: every hand of the wicked shall come upon him. ²³ When he is about to fill his belly, God shall cast the fury of his wrath upon him, and shall rain it upon him while he is eating. ²⁴ He shall flee from the iron weapon, and the bow of bronze shall strike him through. ²⁵ It is drawn, and comes out of the body; yea, the glittering sword comes out of his gall: terrors are upon him. ²⁶ All darkness shall be laid up for his treasures: a fire not blown upon shall consume him; it shall go ill with him who is left in his tent. ²⁷ The heaven shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him. ²⁸ The increase of his house shall depart, and his goods shall flow away in the day of his wrath.

¹⁵ Have you marked the old way which wicked men have trodden? ¹⁶ Who were cut down before their time, whose foundation was swept away with a flood: ¹⁷ Who said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do to us? ¹⁸ Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me. ¹⁹ The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn. ²⁰ Surely our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumes.

¹⁶ Though he heap up silver as the dust, and pile up clothing as the clay; ¹⁷ He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver.

¹⁶ Be not afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased; ¹⁷ For when he dies he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him.

² And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of you? give an account of your stewardship; for you may be no longer steward.

¹⁹ There was a certain rich man, who was clothed in purple and fine linen, and feasted sumptuously every day: ²⁰ And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, who was laid at his gate, full of sores, ²¹ And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. ²² And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;

¹¹ For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withers the grass, and its flower falls, and the beauty of the appearance of it perishes: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.

¹ Come now, you rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. ² Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. ³ Your gold and silver is rusted; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and shall eat your flesh as if it were fire. You have heaped treasure together for the last days.

⁹ By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed.

¹⁴ They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope in the noonday as in the night.

²¹ Before I go where I shall not return, even to the land of darkness and the shadow of death; ²² A land of darkness, as darkness itself; and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.

²² He believes not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for by the sword.

²⁶ All darkness shall be laid up for his treasures: a fire not blown upon shall consume him; it shall go ill with him who is left in his tent.

²⁰ Surely our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumes.

⁴ But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.

³³ For Tophet was ordained of old; yea, for the king it is prepared; he has made it deep and large: its pyre is fire with much wood; the breath of the LORD, like a stream of brimstone, does kindle it.

⁴ Behold, it is cast into the fire for fuel; the fire devours both the ends of it, and the middle of it is burned. Is it fit for any work? ⁵ Behold, when it was whole, it was fit for no work: how much less shall it be fit yet for any work, when the fire has devoured it, and it is burned? ⁶ Therefore thus says the Lord GOD; As the vine tree among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so will I give the inhabitants of Jerusalem. ⁷ And I will set my face against them; they shall go out from one fire, and another fire shall devour them; and you shall know that I am the LORD, when I set my face against them.

⁴⁷ And say to the forest of the south, Hear the word of the LORD; Thus says the Lord GOD; Behold, I will kindle a fire in you, and it shall devour every green tree in you, and every dry tree: the flaming flame shall not be quenched, and all faces from the south to the north shall be burned in it. ⁴⁸ And all flesh shall see that I the LORD have kindled it: it shall not be quenched.

¹² But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

¹³ Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

⁴¹ Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

⁴³ And if your hand offend you, cut it off: it is better for you to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: ⁴⁴ Where the worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched. ⁴⁵ And if your foot offends you, cut it off: it is better for you to enter lame into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: ⁴⁶ Where the worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched. ⁴⁷ And if your eye offend you, pluck it out: it is better for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire: ⁴⁸ Where the worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched. ⁴⁹ For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.

⁸ In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: ⁹ Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

¹⁷ These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved forever.

¹³ Raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.

¹⁵ And out of his mouth goes forth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

⁸ Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.

¹⁶ With him is strength and wisdom: the deceived and the deceiver are his.

¹⁰ Trust not in oppression, and hope not vainly in robbery: if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.

⁸ He that sows iniquity shall reap trouble: and the rod of his anger shall fail.

¹⁰ Because you have forgotten the God of your salvation, and have not been mindful of the rock of your strength, therefore shall you plant pleasant plants, and shall set it with imported seedlings: ¹¹ In the day shall you make your plant to grow, and in the morning shall you make your seed to flourish: but the harvest shall be a heap of ruins in the day of grief and of desperate sorrow.

²⁰ He feeds on ashes: a deceived heart has turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?

⁴ None calls for justice, nor does any plead for truth: they trust in empty words, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.

⁷ For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind: the stalk has no bud: it shall yield no meal: if so be it does yield, the aliens shall swallow it up.

⁸ They that regard vain idols forsake their own mercy.

³ For if a man thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

⁷ Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap. ⁸ For he that sows to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that sows to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

⁶ Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things comes the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

¹⁶ He grows green in the sun, and his branch shoots forth in his garden. ¹⁷ His roots are wrapped about the stone heap, and looks for a place in the stones. ¹⁸ If he is destroyed from his place, then it will deny him, saying, I have not seen you. ¹⁹ Behold, this is the joy of his way, and out of the earth shall others grow.

⁷ For there is hope for a tree, if it is cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender shoots thereof will not cease. ⁸ Though its root grows old in the earth, and its stump dies in the ground; ⁹ Yet at the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth branches like a plant.

¹⁶ His roots shall be dried up beneath, and above shall his branch be cut off. ¹⁷ His memory shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street.

¹⁶ Who were cut down before their time, whose foundation was swept away with a flood:

⁵ God shall likewise destroy you forever, he shall take you away, and pluck you out of your dwelling place, and root you out of the land of the living. Selah. ⁶ The righteous also shall see, and fear, and shall laugh at him: ⁷ Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness. ⁸ But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God forever and ever.

²³ But you, O God, shall bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in you.

¹⁷ Be not overly wicked, neither be foolish: why should you die before your time?

¹¹ When its boughs are withered, they shall be broken off: the women come, and set them on fire: for it is a people of no understanding: therefore he that made them will not have mercy on them, and he that formed them will show them no favor.

⁸ It was planted in a good soil by great waters, that it might bring forth branches, and that it might bear fruit, that it might be a splendid vine. ⁹ Say, Thus says the Lord GOD; Shall it prosper? shall he not pull up its roots, and cut off its fruit, so that it withers? it shall wither in all its leaves of spring, not requiring great power or many people to pluck it up by its roots. ¹⁰ Yea, behold, being planted, shall it prosper? shall it not utterly wither, when the east wind touches it? it shall wither in the bed where it grew.

¹⁶ Ephraim is smitten, their root is dried up, they shall bear no fruit: yea, though they bring forth, yet will I slay even their beloved children.

⁵ I will be as the dew unto Israel: he shall grow as the lily, and cast forth his roots as Lebanon. ⁶ His branches shall spread, and his beauty shall be as the olive tree, and his fragrance as Lebanon. ⁷ They that dwell under his shadow shall return; they shall revive as the grain, and grow as the vine: their scent shall be as the wine of Lebanon.

⁶ If a man abides not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.

³⁹ You shall plant vineyards, and dress them, but shall neither drink of the wine, nor gather the grapes; for the worms shall eat them. ⁴⁰ You shall have olive trees throughout all your borders, but you shall not anoint yourself with the oil; for your olives shall drop off.

⁹ The earth mourns and languishes: Lebanon is ashamed and hewn down: Sharon is like a wilderness; and Bashan and Carmel shake off their fruits.

¹³ And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casts its unripe figs, when it is shaken by a mighty wind.

³ And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after gain, and took bribes, and perverted justice.

³ Behold, here I am: witness against me before the LORD, and before his anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose donkey have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I received any bribe to blind my eyes with? and I will restore it to you.

¹³ So are the paths of all that forget God; and the hypocrite’s hope shall perish:

²² They that hate you shall be clothed with shame; and the dwelling place of the wicked will come to nothing.

¹⁴ If iniquity be in your hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in your tents.

¹ Then answered Zophar the Naamathite, and said,

⁵ Is not your wickedness great? and your iniquities without end? ⁶ For you have taken a pledge from your brother for nothing, and stripped the naked of their clothing. ⁷ You have not given water to the weary to drink, and you have withheld bread from the hungry. ⁸ But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honorable man dwelt in it. ⁹ You have sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

⁸ For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he has gained, when God takes away his soul?

¹² Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him. ¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my justice was as a robe and a turban. ¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out. ¹⁷ And I broke the fangs of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.

¹³ But the hypocrites in heart heap up wrath: they cry not when he binds them.

¹⁴ The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness has surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings? ¹⁵ He that walks righteously, and speaks uprightly; he that despises the gain of oppressions, that keeps his hands from the holding of bribes, that stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed, and shuts his eyes from seeing evil;

¹¹ Since therefore you tread upon the poor, and you take from him burdens of wheat: you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not dwell in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink wine of them. ¹² For I know your manifold transgressions, and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the poor in the gate from their right.

² The godly man has perished out of the earth: and there is none upright among men: they all lie in wait for blood; they hunt every man his brother with a net.

⁵¹ And shall cut him asunder, and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

¹⁴ Behold, he brought forth iniquity, and has conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood.

⁴ None calls for justice, nor does any plead for truth: they trust in empty words, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity. ⁵ They hatch viper’s eggs, and weave the spider's web: he that eats of their eggs dies, and from that which is crushed a viper breaks out.

¹³ You have plowed wickedness, you have reaped iniquity; you have eaten the fruit of lies: because you did trust in your way, in the multitude of your mighty men.

¹⁵ Then when lust has conceived, it brings forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, brings forth death.
