¹ Then Job answered and said, ² I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are you all. ³ Shall vain words have an end? or what emboldens you that you answer? ⁴ I also could speak as you do: if your soul were in my soul’s place, I could heap up words against you, and shake my head at you. ⁵ But I would strengthen you with my mouth, and the moving of my lips would relieve your grief. ⁶ Though I speak, my grief is not relieved: and though I forbear, how am I eased? ⁷ But now he has made me weary: you have made desolate all my company. ⁸ And you have filled me with wrinkles, which is a witness against me: and my leanness rising up in me bears witness to my face. ⁹ He tears me in his wrath, who hates me: he gnashes upon me with his teeth; my enemy sharpens his eyes upon me. ¹⁰ They have gaped upon me with their mouth; they have smitten me upon the cheek reproachfully; they have gathered themselves together against me. ¹¹ God has delivered me to the ungodly, and turned me over into the hands of the wicked. ¹² I was at ease, but he has broken me asunder: he has also taken me by my neck, and shaken me to pieces, and set me up for his mark. ¹³ His archers surround me, he slashes my kidneys asunder, and does not spare; he pours out my gall upon the ground. ¹⁴ He breaks me with breach upon breach, he runs upon me like a warrior. ¹⁵ I have sewed sackcloth upon my skin, and laid my strength in the dust. ¹⁶ My face is foul from weeping, and on my eyelids is the shadow of death; ¹⁷ Not for any violence in my hands: also my prayer is pure. ¹⁸ O earth, cover not my blood, and let my cry have no place. ¹⁹ Also now, behold, my witness is in heaven, and my record is on high. ²⁰ My friends scorn me: but my eye pours out tears unto God. ²¹ O that one might plead for a man with God, as a man pleads for his neighbor! ²² When a few years have come, then I shall go the way where I shall not return.

⁶ Can that which is tasteless be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg?

²⁵ How forceful are right words! but what does your arguing prove?

² Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified? ³ Should your lies make men hold their peace? and when you mock, shall no man make you ashamed?

⁴ But you are forgers of lies, you are all physicians of no value. ⁵ O that you would altogether hold your peace! and it should be your wisdom.

² How long will you torment my soul, and break me in pieces with words? ³ These ten times have you reproached me: you are not ashamed that you have wronged me.

² How have you helped him that is without power? how save you the arm that has no strength? ³ How have you counseled him that has no wisdom? and how have you plentifully declared the thing as it is?

²⁶ For they persecute him whom you have smitten; and they talk of the grief of those whom you have wounded.

¹⁶ The one preach Christ out of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds:

¹⁹ Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger:

²⁶ Do you intend to reprove words, and the speeches of one that is desperate, which are as wind?

² How long will you speak these things? and how long shall the words of your mouth be like a strong wind?

² Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?

³ I have heard the rebuke of my reproach, and the spirit of my understanding causes me to answer.

³ Also against his three friends was his wrath aroused, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job. ⁴ Now Elihu had waited till Job had spoken, because they were older than he. ⁵ When Elihu saw that there was no answer in the mouth of these three men, then his wrath was aroused. ⁶ And Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite answered and said, I am young, and you are very old; therefore I was afraid, and dared not show you my opinion.

⁴⁶ And no man was able to answer him a word, neither dared any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

¹¹ Whose mouths must be stopped, who ruin whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for dishonest gain.

⁸ Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is an opponent may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.

²¹ This is the word that the LORD has spoken concerning him; The virgin the daughter of Zion has despised you, and laughed you to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you.

² Oh that my grief were thoroughly weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together! ³ For now it would be heavier than the sand of the sea: therefore my words are swallowed up. ⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison thereof drinks up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me. ⁵ Does the wild donkey bray when it has grass? or the ox lows over its fodder?

¹⁴ To him that is afflicted pity should be shown from his friend; even though he forsakes the fear of the Almighty.

² Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified?

¹⁶ Therefore does Job open his mouth in vain; he multiplies words without knowledge.

⁷ All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,

¹⁴ You make us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the people.

²⁵ I became also a reproach unto them: when they looked upon me they shook their heads.

¹⁹ In the multitude of words there lacks not sin: but he that refrains his lips is wise.

¹⁴ A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?

¹⁶ To make their land desolate, and a perpetual hissing; everyone that passes by it shall be astonished, and shake his head.

¹⁵ All that pass by clap their hands at you; they hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, saying, Is this the city that men call The perfection of beauty, The joy of the whole earth?

¹⁵ This is the rejoicing city that dwelt securely, that said in her heart, I am, and there is none beside me: how has she become a desolation, a place for beasts to lie down in! everyone that passes by her shall hiss, and shake his fist.

¹² Therefore all things whatsoever you would that men should do to you, do you even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.

³⁹ And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, ⁴⁰ And saying, You that destroy the temple, and build it in three days, save yourself. If you be the Son of God, come down from the cross.

¹⁵ Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.

²⁶ And whether one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honored, all the members rejoice with it.

³ Behold, you have instructed many, and you have strengthened the weak hands. ⁴ Your words have upheld him that was falling, and you have strengthened the feeble knees.

²⁵ I chose out their way, and sat as chief, and dwelt like a king in the army, as one that comforts the mourners.

¹⁴ Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.

⁹ Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart: so does the sweetness of a man's friend by hearty counsel.

¹⁷ Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.

³ Strengthen you the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. ⁴ Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompense; he will come and save you.

¹ Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in the spirit of meekness; considering yourself, lest you also be tempted.

¹ My soul is weary of my life; I will leave my complaint upon myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

¹ [To the Chief Musician. To Jeduthun. A Psalm of Asaph.] I cried unto God with my voice, even unto God with my voice; and he gave ear unto me. ² In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my sore ran in the night, and ceased not: my soul refused to be comforted. ³ I remembered God, and was troubled: I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed. Selah. ⁴ You hold my eyes from closing: I am so troubled that I cannot speak. ⁵ I have considered the days of old, the years of ancient times. ⁶ I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with my own heart: and my spirit made diligent search. ⁷ Will the Lord cast off forever? and will he be favorable no more? ⁸ Is his mercy ceased forever? does his promise fail forevermore? ⁹ Has God forgotten to be gracious? has he in anger shut up his tender mercies? Selah.

¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: while I suffer your terrors I am distracted. ¹⁶ Your fierce anger goes over me; your terrors have cut me off. ¹⁷ They came round about me daily like water; they compassed me about together. ¹⁸ Lover and friend have you put far from me, and my acquaintance into darkness.

¹⁵ And the Sabeans fell upon them, and took them away; yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone am escaped to tell you. ¹⁶ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God has fallen from heaven, and has burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I alone am escaped to tell you. ¹⁷ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone am escaped to tell you. ¹⁸ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house: ¹⁹ And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I alone am escaped to tell you.

¹⁷ There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary are at rest.

³ So am I made to possess months of vanity, and wearisome nights are appointed to me.

¹⁶ I loathe it; I would not live always: let me alone; for my days are vanity.

⁵ When the Almighty was yet with me, when my children were about me; ⁶ When I washed my steps with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil; ⁷ When I went out to the gate of the city, when I prepared my seat in the open square! ⁸ The young men saw me, and hid themselves: and the aged arose, and stood up. ⁹ The princes refrained from talking, and laid their hand on their mouth. ¹⁰ The nobles held their peace, and their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth. ¹¹ When the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me: ¹² Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him. ¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my justice was as a robe and a turban. ¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out. ¹⁷ And I broke the fangs of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth. ¹⁸ Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand. ¹⁹ My root was spread out to the waters, and the dew lay all night upon my branch. ²⁰ My glory was fresh in me, and my bow was renewed in my hand. ²¹ Unto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence at my counsel. ²² After my words they spoke not again; and my speech dropped upon them. ²³ And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain. ²⁴ If I mocked them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down. ²⁵ I chose out their way, and sat as chief, and dwelt like a king in the army, as one that comforts the mourners.

⁶ I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed wet with tears; I water my couch with my tears. ⁷ My eye is consumed because of grief; it grows old because of all my enemies.

¹¹ My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction: ¹² For whom the LORD loves he corrects; even as a father the son in whom he delights.

⁴ The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he awakens morning by morning, he awakens my ear to hear as the learned.

¹³ Therefore also will I make you sick in striking you, in making you desolate because of your sins.

²¹ I went out full, and the LORD has brought me home again empty: why then call you me Naomi, seeing the LORD has testified against me, and the Almighty has afflicted me?

¹⁷ You renew your witnesses against me, and increase your indignation upon me; changes and war are ever with me.

²⁰ My bone clings to my skin and to my flesh, and I have escaped by the skin of my teeth.

¹⁵ And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.

²⁴ My knees are weak through fasting; and my flesh lacks fatness.

¹⁶ Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory he shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.

¹⁶ From the uttermost part of the earth have we heard songs, even glory to the righteous. But I said, My leanness, my leanness, woe unto me! the treacherous dealers have dealt treacherously; yea, the treacherous dealers have dealt very treacherously.

²⁷ That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

¹⁶ For it increases. You hunt me as a fierce lion: and again you show yourself awesome against me. ¹⁷ You renew your witnesses against me, and increase your indignation upon me; changes and war are ever with me.

²⁴ Why hide you your face, and hold me for your enemy?

²⁷ You put my feet also in the stocks, and watch closely all my paths; you set a bound to the soles of my feet.

⁴ He tears himself in his anger: shall the earth be forsaken for you? and shall the rock be removed out of its place?

¹¹ He has also kindled his wrath against me, and he counts me unto him as one of his enemies.

¹⁶ With hypocritical mockers at feasts, they gnashed upon me with their teeth.

¹² The wicked plots against the just, and gnashes upon him with his teeth.

²² Now consider this, you that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.

¹⁶ All your enemies have opened their mouth against you: they hiss and gnash the teeth: they say, We have swallowed her up: certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it.

¹⁰ He was unto me as a bear lying in wait, and as a lion in secret places.

¹⁴ For I will be unto Ephraim as a lion, and as a young lion to the house of Judah: I, even I, will tear them and go away; I will take them away, and none shall rescue him.

¹ Come, and let us return unto the LORD: for he has torn, and he will heal us; he has smitten, and he will bind us up.

⁸ Rejoice not against me, O my enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me.

⁵⁴ When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.

²⁴ But Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah went near, and struck Micaiah on the cheek, and said, Which way went the spirit of the LORD from me to speak unto you?

¹³ They gaped on me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.

¹⁶ For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have enclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. ¹⁷ I can count all my bones: they look and stare upon me.

¹⁵ But in my adversity they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together: yea, the attackers gathered themselves together against me, and I knew it not; they did tear me, and ceased not:

²¹ Yea, they opened their mouth wide against me, and said, Aha, aha, our eye has seen it.

²¹ They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood.

⁶ I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked out the beard: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.

³⁰ He gives his cheek to him that strikes him: he is filled full with reproach.

¹ Now gather yourself in troops, O daughter of troops: he has laid siege against us: they shall strike the judge of Israel with a rod upon the cheek.

⁶⁷ Then did they spit in his face, and buffeted him; and others struck him with the palms of their hands,

³⁵ And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he is Christ, the chosen of God. ³⁶ And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar,

²² And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answer you the high priest so?

²⁷ For of a truth against your holy child Jesus, whom you have anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,

² And the high priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth.

²⁰ For you permit it, if a man brings you into bondage, if a man devours you, if a man takes of you, if a man exalts himself, if a man smites you on the face.

¹⁸ And you have shown this day how that you have dealt well with me: for when the LORD had delivered me into your hand, you killed me not.

¹³ And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother’s house: ¹⁴ And there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys feeding beside them:

⁷ So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and struck Job with painful boils from the sole of his foot unto the crown of his head.

¹⁴ Behold, he brought forth iniquity, and has conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood.

¹² Deliver me not over unto the will of my enemies: for false witnesses are risen up against me, and such as breathe out cruelty.

⁸ And have not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: you have set my feet in a wide place.

¹⁶ Then he delivered him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.

³² For God has concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all.

⁷ And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure.

² And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters. ³ His possessions also were seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred female donkeys, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.

²⁶ I was not at ease, neither had I quiet, neither was I at rest; yet trouble came.

¹⁰ The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken.

¹² Am I a sea, or a sea monster, that you set a watch over me?

²⁰ I have sinned; what shall I do unto you, O you preserver of men? why have you set me as a mark against you, so that I am a burden to myself?

¹⁷ For he breaks me with a tempest, and multiplies my wounds without cause.

²⁶ He runs stubbornly against him, with his heavily embossed shield.

³ When his lamp shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness;

¹⁸ Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand. ¹⁹ My root was spread out to the waters, and the dew lay all night upon my branch.

¹⁹ Though you have severely broken us in the place of jackals, and covered us with the shadow of death.

⁴ My flesh and my skin has he made old: he has broken my bones.

¹¹ He has turned aside my ways, and pulled me in pieces: he has made me desolate. ¹² He has bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow.

⁷ When they took hold of you by your hand, you did break, and tear all their shoulders: and when they leaned upon you, you broke, and made all their backs to shake.

⁴⁴ And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

⁴ Who have for my life laid down their own necks: unto whom not only I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles.

²³ The archers have fiercely attacked him, and shot at him, and hated him:

²⁰ The LORD will not spare him, but then the anger of the LORD and his jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall blot out his name from under heaven.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison thereof drinks up my spirit: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.

¹⁰ Then should I still have comfort; yea, I would exult myself in sorrow: let him not spare; for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One.

²⁷ Whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another; though my heart be consumed within me.

²⁵ It is drawn, and comes out of the body; yea, the glittering sword comes out of his gall: terrors are upon him.

¹² If he turns not, he will whet his sword; he has bent his bow, and made it ready. ¹³ He has also prepared for himself the instruments of death; he makes ready his arrows against the persecutors.

¹¹ My eyes do fail with tears, my soul is troubled, my heart is poured upon the earth, for the destruction of the daughter of my people; because the children and the infants faint in the streets of the city.

¹³ He has caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my heart.

¹¹ Therefore, as I live, says the Lord GOD; Surely, because you have defiled my sanctuary with all your detestable things, and with all your abominations, therefore will I also diminish you; neither shall my eye spare, neither will I have any pity.

³² He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

⁵ And spared not the ancient world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;

⁸ And he struck them hip and thigh with a great slaughter: and he went down and dwelt in the top of the rock of Etam.

⁷ Deep calls unto deep at the noise of your waterfalls: all your waves and your billows are gone over me.

³ Surely against me has he turned; he turns his hand against me all the day. ⁴ My flesh and my skin has he made old: he has broken my bones. ⁵ He has besieged me, and surrounded me with gall and travail.

⁷ They shall run like mighty men; they shall climb the wall like men of war; and they shall march each one on his way, and they shall not break their ranks:

³⁴ And Jacob tore his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.

¹⁰ The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he thunder upon them: the LORD shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength unto his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.

²⁷ And it came to pass, when Ahab heard those words, that he tore his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his flesh, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went softly.

¹⁹ He has cast me into the mire, and I am become like dust and ashes.

⁵ Let the enemy persecute my soul, and take it; yea, let him tread down my life upon the earth, and lay my honor in the dust. Selah.

⁵ Lift not up your horn on high: speak not with a stiff neck.

¹⁰ All the strength of the wicked also will I cut off; but the strength of the righteous shall be exalted.

¹² And in that day did the Lord GOD of hosts call for weeping, and for mourning, and for baldness, and for girding with sackcloth:

⁷ My eye also is dim by reason of sorrow, and all my members are like a shadow.

⁹ Have mercy upon me, O LORD, for I am in trouble: my eye is consumed with grief, yea, my soul and my body.

³ When I kept silence, my bones grew old through my groaning all the day long.

³ I am weary from my crying: my throat is dried: my eyes fail while I wait for my God.

³ For my days are consumed like smoke, and my bones are burned as a hearth. ⁴ My heart is smitten, and withered like grass; so that I forget to eat my bread. ⁵ Because of the voice of my groaning my bones cling to my skin.

⁹ For I have eaten ashes like bread, and mingled my drink with weeping,

³ The sorrows of death surrounded me, and the pangs of sheol got hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow.

¹⁴ As many were astonished at you; so his appearance was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:

¹⁶ For these things I weep; my eye, my eye runs down with water, because the comforter that should relieve my soul is far from me: my children are desolate, because the enemy prevailed.

¹ Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly, ² And said, I cried by reason of my affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of sheol cried I, and you heard my voice. ³ For you had cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods surrounded me: all your billows and your waves passed over me. ⁴ Then I said, I am cast out of your sight; yet I will look again toward your holy temple. ⁵ The waters surrounded me, even to the soul: the deep closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head. ⁶ I went down to the foundations of the mountains; the earth with her bars closed about me forever: yet have you brought up my life from the pit, O LORD my God. ⁷ When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto you, into your holy temple. ⁸ They that regard vain idols forsake their own mercy. ⁹ But I will sacrifice unto you with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD. ¹⁰ And the LORD spoke unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.

³⁴ And said unto them, My soul is exceedingly sorrowful unto death: tarry you here, and watch.

⁵ If you would seek unto God early, and make your supplication to the Almighty; ⁶ If you were pure and upright; surely now he would awake for you, and make the habitation of your righteousness prosperous.

¹⁴ If iniquity be in your hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in your tents.

²⁰ The wicked man travails with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden for the oppressor.

³⁴ For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.

²⁷ Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices which you wrongfully imagine against me. ²⁸ For you say, Where is the house of the prince? and where are the dwelling places of the wicked?

⁵ Is not your wickedness great? and your iniquities without end? ⁶ For you have taken a pledge from your brother for nothing, and stripped the naked of their clothing. ⁷ You have not given water to the weary to drink, and you have withheld bread from the hungry. ⁸ But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honorable man dwelt in it. ⁹ You have sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

⁶ My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go: my heart shall not reproach me so long as I live. ⁷ Let my enemy be as the wicked, and he that rises up against me as the unrighteous.

¹² Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him. ¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my justice was as a robe and a turban. ¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out. ¹⁷ And I broke the fangs of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.

¹ I made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I think upon a maiden? ² For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high? ³ Is not destruction to the wicked? and a disaster to the workers of iniquity? ⁴ Does not he see my ways, and count all my steps? ⁵ If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot has hastened to deceit; ⁶ Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know my integrity. ⁷ If my step has turned out of the way, and my heart walked after my eyes, and if any spot has cleaved to my hands; ⁸ Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out. ⁹ If my heart has been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbor’s door; ¹⁰ Then let my wife grind for another, and let others bow down upon her. ¹¹ For this is a heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges. ¹² For it is a fire that consumes to destruction, and would root out all my increase. ¹³ If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me; ¹⁴ What then shall I do when God rises up? and when he comes, what shall I answer him? ¹⁵ Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb? ¹⁶ If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail; ¹⁷ Or have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless has not eaten of it; ¹⁸ (For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided him from my mother’s womb;) ¹⁹ If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering; ²⁰ If his heart has not blessed me, and if he was not warmed with the fleece of my sheep; ²¹ If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw I had help in the gate: ²² Then let my arm fall from my shoulder blade, and my arm be broken from its socket. ²³ For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his majesty I could not endure. ²⁴ If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, You are my confidence; ²⁵ If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gotten much; ²⁶ If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon moving in brightness; ²⁷ And my heart has been secretly enticed, or my mouth has kissed my hand: ²⁸ This also would be an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above. ²⁹ If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him: ³⁰ Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul. ³¹ If the men of my tent have not, Oh that we had of his meat! we cannot be satisfied. ³² The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveler. ³³ If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding my iniquity in my bosom: ³⁴ Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door? ³⁵ Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that my adversary had written a book. ³⁶ Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me. ³⁷ I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him. ³⁸ If my land cries against me, and its furrows likewise complain; ³⁹ If I have eaten its fruit without payment, or have caused its owners to lose their life: ⁴⁰ Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and weeds instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

³ O LORD my God, if I have done this; if there be iniquity in my hands; ⁴ If I have rewarded evil unto him that was at peace with me; (yea, I have delivered him that without cause is my enemy:) ⁵ Let the enemy persecute my soul, and take it; yea, let him tread down my life upon the earth, and lay my honor in the dust. Selah.

¹⁷ All this is come upon us; yet have we not forgotten you, neither have we dealt falsely in your covenant. ¹⁸ Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from your way; ¹⁹ Though you have severely broken us in the place of jackals, and covered us with the shadow of death. ²⁰ If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god; ²¹ Shall not God search this out? for he knows the secrets of the heart.

¹⁸ If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me: ¹⁹ But verily God has heard me; he has attended to the voice of my prayer.

⁸ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

⁶ Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.

⁸ But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.

⁸ I desire therefore that men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting.

¹¹ And now are you cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand;

⁵ And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before you: for they have provoked you to anger before the builders.

⁹ Will God hear his cry when trouble comes upon him?

¹⁵ And when you spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you: yea, when you make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.

²¹ For, behold, the LORD comes out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her bloodshed, and shall no more cover her slain.

⁹ Then shall you call, and the LORD shall answer; you shall cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If you take away from the midst of you the yoke, the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness; ¹⁰ And if you draw out your soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall your light rise in the darkness, and your darkness be as the noon day:

²⁹ O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of the LORD.

⁷ For her blood is in the midst of her; she set it upon the top of a rock; she poured it not upon the ground, to cover it with dust;

³ You ask, and receive not, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it upon your lusts. ⁴ You adulterers and adulteresses, know you not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

⁵⁰ If you shall afflict my daughters, or if you shall take other wives beside my daughters, no man is with us; see, God is witness between me and you.

⁵ And he said unto them, The LORD is witness against you, and his anointed is witness this day, that you have not found anything in my hand. And they answered, He is witness.

² Dominion and fear are with him, he makes peace in his high places.

⁵ Who is like unto the LORD our God, who dwells on high,

⁹ For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;

¹ I say the truth in Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Spirit,

²³ Moreover I call God for a witness upon my soul, that to spare you I came not as yet unto Corinth.

³¹ The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who is blessed forevermore, knows that I lie not.

⁵ For neither at any time used we flattering words, as you know, nor a cloak of covetousness; God is witness:

¹⁰ You are witnesses, and God also, how holy and just and unblamable was our behavior among you that believe:

⁴ I am as one mocked of his neighbor, who calls upon God, and he answers him: the just upright man is laughed to scorn. ⁵ He that is ready to slip with his feet is like a lamp despised in the thought of him that is at ease.

⁴ I also could speak as you do: if your soul were in my soul’s place, I could heap up words against you, and shake my head at you.

² Are there not mockers with me? and does not my eye continue in their provocation?

⁴ For my love they are my adversaries: but I give myself unto prayer.

² I poured out my complaint before him; I showed before him my trouble.

⁴ Yea, he had power over the angel, and prevailed: he wept, and made supplication unto him: he found him in Bethel, and there he spoke with us; ⁵ Even the LORD God of hosts; the LORD is his memorial name.

¹¹ And they were filled with fury; and discussed one with another what they might do to Jesus. ¹² And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.

⁷ Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared;

³⁴ Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me: ³⁵ Then would I speak, and not fear him; but it is not so with me.

³ Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God.

²² Then call, and I will answer: or let me speak, and you answer me.

³ Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat! ⁴ I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments. ⁵ I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say unto me. ⁶ Will he plead against me with his great power? No; but he would put strength in me. ⁷ There the righteous might reason with him; so should I be delivered forever from my judge.

³⁵ Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that my adversary had written a book.

¹ Moreover the LORD answered Job, and said, ² Shall he that contends with the Almighty instruct him? he that reproves God, let him answer it. ³ Then Job answered the LORD, and said, ⁴ Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer you? I will lay my hand upon my mouth. ⁵ Once have I spoken; but I will not answer: yea, twice; but I will proceed no further.

¹⁰ Whatever has been is named already, and it is known that this is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.

⁹ Woe unto him that strives with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashions it, What do you make? or of your work, He has no hands?

²⁰ Nay but, O man, who are you that replies against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why have you made me thus?

⁹ As the cloud is consumed and vanishes away: so he that goes down to the grave shall come up no more. ¹⁰ He shall return no more to his house, neither shall his place know him any more.

⁵ Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with you, you have appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

¹⁰ But man dies, and wastes away: yea, man expires, and where is he?

¹⁴ If a man dies, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change comes.

⁵ Also when they shall be afraid of that which is high, and terrors are in the way, and the almond tree shall blossom, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goes to his eternal home, and the mourners go about the streets:
