¹ Lo, my eye has seen all this, my ear has heard and understood it. ² What you know, the same do I know also: I am not inferior unto you. ³ Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God. ⁴ But you are forgers of lies, you are all physicians of no value. ⁵ O that you would altogether hold your peace! and it should be your wisdom. ⁶ Hear now my reasoning, and hearken to the pleadings of my lips. ⁷ Will you speak wickedly for God? and talk deceitfully for him? ⁸ Will you accept his person? will you contend for God? ⁹ Is it good that he should search you out? or as one man mocks another, do you so mock him? ¹⁰ He will surely reprove you, if you do secretly show partiality. ¹¹ Shall not his excellence make you afraid? and his dread fall upon you? ¹² Your proverbs are like unto ashes, your defenses are defenses of clay. ¹³ Hold your peace, let me alone, that I may speak, and let come on me what will. ¹⁴ Why do I take my flesh in my teeth, and put my life in my hand? ¹⁵ Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will defend my own ways before him. ¹⁶ He also shall be my salvation: for a hypocrite shall not come before him. ¹⁷ Hear diligently my speech, and my declaration with your ears. ¹⁸ Behold now, I have prepared my case; I know that I shall be justified. ¹⁹ Who is he that will contend with me? for now, if I hold my tongue, I shall die. ²⁰ Only do not two things unto me: then will I not hide myself from you. ²¹ Withdraw your hand far from me: and let not your dread make me afraid. ²² Then call, and I will answer: or let me speak, and you answer me. ²³ How many are my iniquities and sins? make me know my transgression and my sin. ²⁴ Why hide you your face, and hold me for your enemy? ²⁵ Will you break a leaf driven to and fro? and will you pursue the dry stubble? ²⁶ For you write bitter things against me, and make me possess the iniquities of my youth. ²⁷ You put my feet also in the stocks, and watch closely all my paths; you set a bound to the soles of my feet. ²⁸ And he, like a rotten thing, consumes, as a garment that is moth-eaten.

¹² Now a thing was secretly brought to me, and my ear received a whisper of it.

⁹ Who does great things and unsearchable; marvelous things without number: ¹⁰ Who gives rain upon the earth, and sends waters upon the fields: ¹¹ To set up on high those that are low; that those who mourn may be lifted to safety. ¹² He frustrates the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their plans. ¹³ He takes the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the cunning is quickly ended. ¹⁴ They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope in the noonday as in the night. ¹⁵ But he saves the poor from the sword, from their mouth, and from the hand of the mighty. ¹⁶ So the poor has hope, and injustice shuts her mouth.

²⁷ Lo this, we have searched it out, so it is; hear it, and know you it for your good.

⁸ For inquire, I pray you, of the former age, and prepare yourself to the findings of their fathers: ⁹ (For we are but of yesterday, and know nothing, because our days upon earth are a shadow:) ¹⁰ Shall not they teach you, and tell you, and utter words out of their heart?

⁹ Who knows not among all these that the hand of the LORD has done this? ¹⁰ In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind. ¹¹ Does not the ear test words? and the mouth taste its food? ¹² With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days understanding. ¹³ With him is wisdom and strength, he has counsel and understanding. ¹⁴ Behold, he breaks down, and it cannot be built again: he shuts up a man, and there can be no opening. ¹⁵ Behold, he withholds the waters, and they dry up: also he sends them out, and they overturn the earth. ¹⁶ With him is strength and wisdom: the deceived and the deceiver are his. ¹⁷ He leads counselors away plundered, and makes the judges fools. ¹⁸ He looses the bonds of kings, and girds their loins with a waistband. ¹⁹ He leads princes away plundered, and overthrows the mighty. ²⁰ He takes away the speech of the trustworthy, and takes away the understanding of the aged. ²¹ He pours contempt upon princes, and weakens the strength of the mighty. ²² He uncovers deep things out of darkness, and brings out to light the shadow of death. ²³ He increases the nations, and destroys them: he enlarges the nations, and leads them away. ²⁴ He takes away the heart of the chiefs of the people of the earth, and causes them to wander in a wilderness where there is no way. ²⁵ They grope in the dark without light, and he makes them to stagger like a drunken man.

¹⁷ I will show you, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare; ¹⁸ Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:

³ Who is he that hides counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered what I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not. ⁴ Hear, I ask you, and I will speak: I will question you, and you declare unto me. ⁵ I have heard of you by the hearing of the ear: but now my eye sees you. ⁶ Therefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.

³ Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. ⁴ We will not hide them from their children, showing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he has done.

³ That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that you also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

³ But I have understanding as well as you; I am not inferior to you: yea, who knows not such things as these?

⁸ Have you heard the council of God? and do you limit wisdom to yourself? ⁹ What know you, that we know not? what understand you, which is not in us?

³⁵ Job has spoken without knowledge, and his words were without wisdom.

¹⁶ Therefore does Job open his mouth in vain; he multiplies words without knowledge.

² Hear attentively the noise of his voice, and the sound that goes out of his mouth.

⁴ Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer you? I will lay my hand upon my mouth. ⁵ Once have I spoken; but I will not answer: yea, twice; but I will proceed no further.

⁷ And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against you, and against your two friends: for you have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job has.

¹ Now concerning things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love edifies. ² And if any man thinks that he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know.

⁴ For if he that comes preaches another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if you receive another spirit, which you have not received, or another gospel, which you have not accepted, you might well bear with him. ⁵ For I suppose I was not the least behind the very chief apostles.

¹⁶ I say again, Let no man think me foolish; but if otherwise, yet as a fool receive me, that I may boast myself a little. ¹⁷ That which I speak, I speak it not according to the Lord, but as it were foolishly, in this confidence of boasting. ¹⁸ Seeing that many boast after the flesh, I will boast also.

¹¹ I have become a fool in boasting; you have compelled me: for I ought to have been commended by you: for in nothing am I behind the very chief apostles, though I be nothing.

³ If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.

¹⁴ How much less shall I answer him, and choose out my words to reason with him? ¹⁵ For, though I were righteous, yet could I not answer, but I would make supplication to my judge.

³⁴ Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me: ³⁵ Then would I speak, and not fear him; but it is not so with me.

⁵ But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against you;

¹⁵ Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will defend my own ways before him.

²² Then call, and I will answer: or let me speak, and you answer me.

³ Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat! ⁴ I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments. ⁵ I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say unto me. ⁶ Will he plead against me with his great power? No; but he would put strength in me. ⁷ There the righteous might reason with him; so should I be delivered forever from my judge.

³⁵ Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that my adversary had written a book.

¹⁸ Come now, and let us reason together, says the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. ¹⁹ If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land: ²⁰ But if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the LORD has spoken it.

²¹ Produce your case, says the LORD; bring forth your strong reasons, says the King of Jacob.

¹ Righteous are you, O LORD, when I plead with you: yet let me talk with you of your judgments: Why does the way of the wicked prosper? why are all they happy that deal very treacherously? ² You have planted them, yea, they have taken root: they grow, yea, they bring forth fruit: you are near in their mouth, and far from their heart.

² Hear you, O mountains, the LORD'S controversy, and you strong foundations of the earth: for the LORD has a controversy with his people, and he will contend with Israel.

¹⁶ You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

⁷ Remember, I pray you, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off? ⁸ Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same. ⁹ By the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed. ¹⁰ The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken. ¹¹ The old lion perishes for lack of prey, and the strong lion’s whelps are scattered abroad.

¹ Call now, if there be any that will answer you; and to which of the holy ones will you turn? ² For wrath kills the foolish man, and envy slays the simple one. ³ I have seen the foolish taking root: but suddenly I cursed his habitation. ⁴ His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them. ⁵ Whose harvest the hungry eats up, and takes it even out of the thorns, and the robber swallows up their wealth.

²¹ For now you are nothing; you see my terror, and are afraid.

³ Does God pervert judgment? or does the Almighty pervert justice? ⁴ If your children have sinned against him, and he has cast them away for their transgression;

² I have heard many such things: miserable comforters are you all.

⁵ Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out, and the flame of his fire shall not shine. ⁶ The light shall be dark in his tent, and his lamp shall be put out with him. ⁷ The steps of his strength shall be shortened, and his own counsel shall cast him down. ⁸ For he is cast into a net by his own feet, and he walks upon a snare. ⁹ The trap shall take him by the heel, and a snare shall lay hold of him. ¹⁰ The noose is laid for him on the ground, and a trap for him in the way. ¹¹ Terrors shall make him afraid on every side, and shall drive him to his feet. ¹² His strength shall be hunger-bitten, and destruction shall be ready at his side. ¹³ It shall devour patches of his skin: even the firstborn of death shall devour his strength. ¹⁴ His confidence shall be rooted out of his tent, and it shall bring him to the king of terrors. ¹⁵ They shall dwell in his tent, who are none of his: brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation. ¹⁶ His roots shall be dried up beneath, and above shall his branch be cut off. ¹⁷ His memory shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street. ¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world. ¹⁹ He shall neither have son nor nephew among his people, nor any remaining in his dwellings. ²⁰ They that come after him shall be astounded at his day, as they that went before were frightened. ²¹ Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him that knows not God.

²⁷ Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices which you wrongfully imagine against me. ²⁸ For you say, Where is the house of the prince? and where are the dwelling places of the wicked? ²⁹ Have you not asked them that go by the way? and do you not know their evidences, ³⁰ That the wicked are reserved to the day of destruction? they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath. ³¹ Who shall declare his way to his face? and who shall repay him what he has done? ³² Yet shall he be brought to the grave, and shall remain in the tomb. ³³ The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, and every man shall follow after him, as there are innumerable gone before him. ³⁴ How then do you comfort me in vain, seeing in your answers there remains falsehood?

⁶ For you have taken a pledge from your brother for nothing, and stripped the naked of their clothing. ⁷ You have not given water to the weary to drink, and you have withheld bread from the hungry. ⁸ But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honorable man dwelt in it. ⁹ You have sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken. ¹⁰ Therefore snares are round about you, and sudden fear troubles you; ¹¹ Or darkness, that you can not see; and abundance of waters cover you. ¹² Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are! ¹³ And you say, How does God know? can he judge through the dark cloud? ¹⁴ Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he sees not; and he walks in the circle of heaven. ¹⁵ Have you marked the old way which wicked men have trodden? ¹⁶ Who were cut down before their time, whose foundation was swept away with a flood: ¹⁷ Who said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do to us? ¹⁸ Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me. ¹⁹ The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn. ²⁰ Surely our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumes. ²¹ Acquaint now yourself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto you. ²² Receive, I pray you, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart. ²³ If you return to the Almighty, you shall be built up, you shall put away iniquity far from your tents. ²⁴ Then shall you lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks. ²⁵ Yea, the Almighty shall be your defense, and you shall have plenty of silver. ²⁶ For then shall you have your delight in the Almighty, and shall lift up your face unto God. ²⁷ You shall make your prayer unto him, and he shall hear you, and you shall pay your vows. ²⁸ You shall also decree a thing, and it shall be established for you: and the light shall shine upon your ways. ²⁹ When men are cast down, then you shall say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person. ³⁰ He shall deliver the innocent man: and he is delivered by the pureness of your hands.

⁶⁹ The proud have forged a lie against me: but I will keep your precepts with my whole heart.

¹⁴ They have healed also the hurt of the daughter of my people lightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.

²² Is there no balm in Gilead; is there no physician there? why then has not the health of the daughter of my people recovered?

³² Behold, I am against them that prophesy false dreams, says the LORD, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their recklessness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, says the LORD.

¹³ There is none to plead your cause, that you may be bound up: you have no healing medicines.

¹¹ Go up into Gilead, and take balm, O virgin, the daughter of Egypt: in vain shall you use many medicines; for you shall not be cured.

⁴ The diseased have you not strengthened, neither have you healed those who were sick, neither have you bound up those who were broken, neither have you brought again those who were driven away, neither have you sought those who were lost; but with force and with cruelty have you ruled them.

¹³ When Ephraim saw his sickness, and Judah saw his wound, then went Ephraim to the Assyrian, and sent to king Jareb: yet could he not heal you, nor cure you of your wound.

¹⁷ When Jesus heard it, he said unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

²⁶ And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better, but rather grew worse,

³ Should your lies make men hold their peace? and when you mock, shall no man make you ashamed?

¹³ Hold your peace, let me alone, that I may speak, and let come on me what will.

³ Shall vain words have an end? or what emboldens you that you answer?

² How long will it be before you make an end of words? consider, and afterwards we will speak.

² How long will you torment my soul, and break me in pieces with words?

² Hear diligently my speech, and let this be your consolation. ³ Bear with me that I may speak; and after that I have spoken, mock on.

¹ So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.

²⁸ Even a fool, when he holds his peace, is counted wise: and he that shuts his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.

³ For a dream comes through much business; and a fool's voice is known by a multitude of words.

¹³ Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time; for it is an evil time.

¹⁹ Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger:

⁷ And when they told it to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, you men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.

¹ Therefore, Job, I pray you, hear my speeches, and hearken to all my words. ² Behold, now I have opened my mouth, my tongue has spoken in my mouth. ³ My words shall be of the uprightness of my heart: and my lips shall utter knowledge clearly.

² Hear my words, O you wise men; and give ear unto me, you that have knowledge.

⁶ Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and from the opening of my lips shall come right things. ⁷ For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips.

⁷ Remember, I pray you, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off?

² Should not the multitude of words be answered? and should a man full of talk be justified? ³ Should your lies make men hold their peace? and when you mock, shall no man make you ashamed? ⁴ For you have said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in your eyes.

⁵ He that speaks flattery to his friends, even the eyes of his children shall fail.

⁴ My lips shall not speak wickedness, nor my tongue utter deceit.

²¹ Let me not, I pray you, accept any man’s person, neither let me give flattery unto man. ²² For I know not how to give flattery; in so doing my maker would soon take me away.

⁴ For truly my words shall not be false: he that is blameless in knowledge is with you.

² They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time comes, that whosoever kills you will think that he does God service.

⁵ But if our unrighteousness commends the righteousness of God, what shall we say? Is God unrighteous who takes vengeance? (I speak as a man) ⁶ God forbid: for then how shall God judge the world? ⁷ For if the truth of God has more abounded through my lie unto his glory; why yet am I also judged as a sinner? ⁸ And not rather, (as we are slanderously reported, and as some affirm that we say,) Let us do evil, that good may come? whose condemnation is just.

² But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.

² You shall not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shall you testify in a dispute to follow after a crowd to pervert judgment: ³ Neither shall you be partial to a poor man in his cause.

¹⁵ You shall do no unrighteousness in judgment: you shall not be partial to the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty: but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor.

²¹ Let me not, I pray you, accept any man’s person, neither let me give flattery unto man.

¹⁹ How much less to him that regards not the persons of princes, nor regards the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands.

²³ These things also belong to the wise. It is not good to have partiality in judgment.

⁹ Therefore have I also made you contemptible and base before all the people, according as you have not kept my ways, but have been partial in the law.

¹⁶ With him is strength and wisdom: the deceived and the deceiver are his.

² Are there not mockers with me? and does not my eye continue in their provocation?

³⁶ My desire is that Job may be tried unto the end because he answers like wicked men.

²¹ Shall not God search this out? for he knows the secrets of the heart.

²³ Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:

²² Now therefore be not mockers, lest your bonds be made strong: for I have heard from the Lord GOD of hosts a destruction, even determined upon the whole earth.

¹⁰ I the LORD search the heart, I test the mind, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

⁷ Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap. ⁸ For he that sows to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that sows to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

⁷ And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against you, and against your two friends: for you have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job has. ⁸ Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you: for him will I accept: lest I deal with you after your folly, in that you have not spoken of me the thing which is right, like my servant Job.

²¹ These things have you done, and I kept silence; you thought that I was altogether such a one as yourself: but I will rebuke you, and set them in order before your eyes. ²² Now consider this, you that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver.

² How long will you judge unjustly, and accept the persons of the wicked? Selah.

⁹ But if you have respect to persons, you commit sin, and are convicted of the law as transgressors.

¹⁶ Fear and dread shall fall upon them; by the greatness of your arm they shall be as still as a stone; till your people pass over, O LORD, till the people pass over, whom you have purchased.

²¹ Withdraw your hand far from me: and let not your dread make me afraid.

²³ For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his majesty I could not endure.

¹²⁰ My flesh trembles for fear of you; and I am afraid of your judgments.

¹³ Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.

²² Fear you not me? says the LORD: will you not tremble at my presence, who has placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though its waves toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it?

¹⁰ But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to endure his indignation.

²⁸ And fear not them who kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

³ And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvelous are your works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are your ways, you King of saints. ⁴ Who shall not fear you, O Lord, and glorify your name? for you only are holy: for all nations shall come and worship before you; for your judgments are made manifest.

⁷ And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

²⁷ And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, who am but dust and ashes:

¹⁴ And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

¹⁹ How much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed before the moth?

¹⁷ His memory shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the street.

¹⁶ The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

¹² But you, O LORD, shall endure forever; and your remembrance unto all generations.

¹⁵ Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.

⁷ The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.

¹⁴ They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased, they shall not rise: therefore have you visited and destroyed them, and made all their memory to perish.

¹ For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

⁹ Even that it would please God to destroy me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off! ¹⁰ Then should I still have comfort; yea, I would exult myself in sorrow: let him not spare; for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One.

¹¹ Therefore I will not restrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.

¹⁵ So that my soul chooses strangling, and death rather than my life. ¹⁶ I loathe it; I would not live always: let me alone; for my days are vanity.

¹ My soul is weary of my life; I will leave my complaint upon myself; I will speak in the bitterness of my soul.

⁵ O that you would altogether hold your peace! and it should be your wisdom.

³ Bear with me that I may speak; and after that I have spoken, mock on.

³ And when I saw that you delivered me not, I put my life in my hands, and passed over against the children of Ammon, and the LORD delivered them into my hand: why then are you come up unto me this day, to fight against me?

⁵ For he did put his life in his hand, and slew the Philistine, and the LORD worked a great salvation for all Israel: you saw it, and did rejoice: therefore then will you sin against innocent blood, to slay David without a cause?

²¹ And the woman came unto Saul, and saw that he was greatly troubled, and said unto him, Behold, your handmaid has obeyed your voice, and I have put my life in my hand, and have hearkened unto your words which you spoke unto me.

⁴ He tears himself in his anger: shall the earth be forsaken for you? and shall the rock be removed out of its place?

¹⁰⁹ My soul is continually in my hand: yet do I not forget your law.

⁵ The fool folds his hands together, and eats his own flesh.

²⁰ And he shall snatch on the right hand, and be hungry; and he shall devour on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied: they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm:

²⁶ And I will feed them that oppress you with their own flesh; and they shall be drunk with their own blood, as with sweet wine: and all flesh shall know that I the LORD am your Savior and your Redeemer, the mighty One of Jacob.

⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, and are spent without hope.

⁷ You know that I am not wicked; and there is none that can deliver out of your hand.

¹⁸ Behold now, I have prepared my case; I know that I shall be justified.

¹⁷ Not for any violence in my hands: also my prayer is pure.

²¹ O that one might plead for a man with God, as a man pleads for his neighbor!

²⁵ For I know that my redeemer lives, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth: ²⁶ And though after my skin is thus destroyed, yet in my flesh shall I see God: ²⁷ Whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another; though my heart be consumed within me. ²⁸ But you should say, Why persecute we him, seeing the root of the matter is found in me?

¹⁰ But he knows the way that I take: when he has tested me, I shall come forth as gold.

⁵ God forbid that I should justify you: till I die I will not remove my integrity from me.

³¹ If the men of my tent have not, Oh that we had of his meat! we cannot be satisfied. ³² The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveler. ³³ If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding my iniquity in my bosom: ³⁴ Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door? ³⁵ Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that my adversary had written a book. ³⁶ Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me. ³⁷ I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.

² Shall he that contends with the Almighty instruct him? he that reproves God, let him answer it.

⁸ Will you also annul my judgment? will you condemn me, that you may be righteous?

⁴ Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for you are with me; your rod and your staff they comfort me.

³² The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous has hope in his death.

³⁸ For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, ³⁹ Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creation, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

²⁰ For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.

² The LORD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him a habitation; my father's God, and I will exalt him.

¹³ So are the paths of all that forget God; and the hypocrite’s hope shall perish:

⁸ For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he has gained, when God takes away his soul? ⁹ Will God hear his cry when trouble comes upon him? ¹⁰ Will he delight himself in the Almighty? will he always call upon God?

¹³ But the hypocrites in heart heap up wrath: they cry not when he binds them.

¹ [A Psalm of David.] The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

⁶ He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defense; I shall not be moved. ⁷ In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.

¹⁴ The LORD is my strength and song, and is become my salvation.

²¹ I will praise you: for you have heard me, and have become my salvation.

¹ And in that day you shall say, O LORD, I will praise you: though you were angry with me, your anger is turned away, and you comforted me. ² Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD GOD is my strength and my song; he also has become my salvation.

¹⁴ The sinners in Zion are afraid; fearfulness has surprised the hypocrites. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who among us shall dwell with everlasting burnings?

²³ Truly in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains: truly in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel.

⁴⁷ For so has the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set you to be a light of the Gentiles, that you should be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.

⁶ Hear now my reasoning, and hearken to the pleadings of my lips.

² Hear diligently my speech, and let this be your consolation.

¹ Therefore, Job, I pray you, hear my speeches, and hearken to all my words.

² I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just before God? ³ If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.

²⁰ If I justify myself, my own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am blameless, it shall also prove me perverse.

⁴ I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments.

⁷ Gird up your loins now like a man: I will demand of you, and declare you unto me. ⁸ Will you also annul my judgment? will you condemn me, that you may be righteous?

²⁶ Put me in remembrance: let us contend together: state your case, that you may be proved right.

³³ Who shall lay anything to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifies. ³⁴ Who is he that condemns? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.

¹² For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have conducted ourselves in the world, and more abundantly toward you.

⁸ Your hands have made me and fashioned me together totally; yet you do destroy me.

⁵ If indeed you will magnify yourselves against me, and plead against me my reproach:

⁵ If you can answer me, set your words in order before me, stand up. ⁶ Behold, I am according to your wish in God’s stead: I also am formed out of the clay. ⁷ Behold, my terror shall not make you afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon you.

³² If you have any thing to say, answer me: speak, for I desire to justify you.

⁷ For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed. ⁸ He is near that justifies me; who will contend with me? let us stand together: who is my adversary? let him come near to me.

⁹ Then I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But his word was in my heart as a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary from holding it back, and I could not.

⁸ And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. ⁹ And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where are you? ¹⁰ And he said, I heard your voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.

¹² Yea, the darkness hides not from you; but the night shines as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to you.

¹⁵ And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the generals, and the mighty men, and every slave, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; ¹⁶ And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:

³⁴ Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me:

²⁰ Are not my days few? cease then, and let me alone, that I may take comfort a little,

¹¹ Shall not his excellence make you afraid? and his dread fall upon you?

¹⁵ Have you marked the old way which wicked men have trodden? ¹⁶ Who were cut down before their time, whose foundation was swept away with a flood: ¹⁷ Who said unto God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do to us?

⁷ Behold, my terror shall not make you afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy upon you.

¹⁰ Remove your scourge away from me: I am consumed by the blow of your hand.

¹⁶ If I had called, and he had answered me; yet would I not believe that he had hearkened unto my voice.

³² For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in trial.

¹⁵ You shall call, and I will answer you: you will have a desire to the work of your hands.

³ Gird up now your loins like a man; for I will demand of you, and you answer me.

⁵ Is not your wickedness great? and your iniquities without end?

⁸ And if they are bound in fetters, and are held in cords of affliction; ⁹ Then he shows them their work, and their transgressions, that they have exceeded.

²⁰ If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god; ²¹ Shall not God search this out? for he knows the secrets of the heart.

²⁰ And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be: for they are a very perverse generation, children in whom is no faith.

¹⁶ Then said Samuel, Why then do you ask of me, seeing the LORD has departed from you, and has become your enemy?

² I will say unto God, Do not condemn me; show me why you contend with me.

⁹ He tears me in his wrath, who hates me: he gnashes upon me with his teeth; my enemy sharpens his eyes upon me.

¹¹ He has also kindled his wrath against me, and he counts me unto him as one of his enemies.

² Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me; ³ When his lamp shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness;

²¹ You have become cruel to me: with your strong hand you oppose yourself against me.

¹⁰ Behold, he finds occasions against me, he counts me for his enemy,

¹ Why stand you afar off, O LORD? why hide you yourself in times of trouble?

¹ [To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David.] How long will you forget me, O LORD? forever? how long will you hide your face from me?

²⁴ Why hide you your face, and forget our affliction and our oppression?

⁶ I call to remembrance my song in the night: I commune with my own heart: and my spirit made diligent search. ⁷ Will the Lord cast off forever? and will he be favorable no more? ⁸ Is his mercy ceased forever? does his promise fail forevermore? ⁹ Has God forgotten to be gracious? has he in anger shut up his tender mercies? Selah.

¹⁴ LORD, why cast you off my soul? why hide you your face from me?

¹⁷ And I will wait upon the LORD, that hides his face from the house of Jacob, and I will hope in him.

⁵ The Lord was as an enemy: he has swallowed up Israel, he has swallowed up all her palaces: he has destroyed his strongholds, and has increased in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation.

¹⁵ Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.

³⁶ And upon them that are left alive of you I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursues.

¹⁴ After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom do you pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea.

³ And do you open your eyes upon such a one, and bring me into judgment with you?

¹⁸ They are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carries away.

¹³ The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters: but God shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like a rolling thing before the whirlwind.

²⁰ A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he sends forth justice unto victory.

²⁰ And she said unto them, Call me not Naomi, call me Mara: for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me.

²⁰ Therefore is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul;

¹¹ His bones are full of the sin of his youth, which shall lie down with him in the dust.

⁷ Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to your mercy remember me for your goodness' sake, O LORD.

³ For my soul is full of troubles: and my life draws near unto the grave. ⁴ I am counted with them that go down into the pit: I am as a man that has no strength: ⁵ Adrift among the dead, like the slain that lie in the grave, whom you remember no more: and they are cut off from your hand. ⁶ You have laid me in the lowest pit, in darkness, in the deep. ⁷ Your anger lies hard upon me, and you have afflicted me with all your waves. Selah. ⁸ You have put away my acquaintance far from me; you have made me an abomination unto them: I am shut up, and I cannot come forth. ⁹ My eye mourns by reason of affliction: LORD, I have called daily upon you, I have stretched out my hands unto you. ¹⁰ Will you show wonders to the dead? shall the dead arise and praise you? Selah. ¹¹ Shall your lovingkindness be declared in the grave? or your faithfulness in destruction? ¹² Shall your wonders be known in the dark? and your righteousness in the land of forgetfulness? ¹³ But unto you have I cried, O LORD; and in the morning shall my prayer come before you. ¹⁴ LORD, why cast you off my soul? why hide you your face from me? ¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: while I suffer your terrors I am distracted. ¹⁶ Your fierce anger goes over me; your terrors have cut me off. ¹⁷ They came round about me daily like water; they compassed me about together. ¹⁸ Lover and friend have you put far from me, and my acquaintance into darkness.

¹¹ And you mourn at the last, when your flesh and your body are consumed, ¹² And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; ¹³ And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined my ear to them that instructed me!

¹⁹ Surely after I was turned, I repented; and after I was instructed, I struck myself upon the thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.

⁵ And a certain man was there, who had an infirmity thirty and eight years.

¹⁴ Afterward Jesus found him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, you are made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto you.

¹⁰ Then Asa was angry with the seer, and put him in a prison house; for he was in a rage with him because of this thing. And Asa oppressed some of the people the same time. ¹¹ And, behold, the acts of Asa, first and last, lo, they are written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel. ¹² And Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease became severe: yet in his disease he sought not to the LORD, but to the physicians.

⁷ So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and struck Job with painful boils from the sole of his foot unto the crown of his head.

⁶ That you inquire after my iniquity, and search after my sin?

¹⁶ For now you number my steps: do not watch over my sin.

¹¹ He puts my feet in the stocks, he marks all my paths.

²² He goes after her immediately, as an ox goes to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks;

²⁴ Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.

¹² Let her not be as one dead, whose flesh is half consumed when he comes out of his mother's womb.

¹⁷ My bones are pierced in me in the night season: and my sinews take no rest. ¹⁸ By the great force of my disease is my garment changed: it binds me about as the collar of my coat. ¹⁹ He has cast me into the mire, and I am become like dust and ashes.

²⁹ I am a brother to jackals, and a companion to ostriches. ³⁰ My skin is black upon me, and my bones are burned with heat.

¹¹ When you with rebukes do correct man for iniquity, you make his beauty melt away like a moth: surely every man is vanity. Selah.

¹² Therefore will I be unto Ephraim like a moth, and to the house of Judah like rottenness.
