¹ I MADE a covenant with mine eyes; how then should I look upon a maid? ² For what [is] the portion of God from above, and the heritage of the Almighty from on high? ³ Is it not calamity to the unrighteous, and disaster to the workers of iniquity? ⁴ Doth not he see my ways, and number all my steps? ⁵ If I have walked with vanity, and my foot hath hasted to deceit; ⁶ (Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity;) ⁷ If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any spot hath cleaved to mine hands: ⁸ Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let the produce of my field be rooted out. ⁹ If mine heart have been enticed unto a woman, and I have laid wait at my neighbour’s door: ¹⁰ Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her. ¹¹ For that were an heinous crime; yea, it were an iniquity to be punished by the judges: ¹² For it is a fire that consumeth unto Destruction, and would root out all mine increase. ¹³ If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me: ¹⁴ What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him? ¹⁵ Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb? ¹⁶ If I have withheld the poor from [their] desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail; ¹⁷ Or have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof; ¹⁸ (Nay, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, and I have been her guide from my mother’s womb;) ¹⁹ If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or that the needy had no covering; ²⁰ If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep; ²¹ If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, because I saw my help in the gate: ²² Then let my shoulder fall from the shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone. ²³ For calamity from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his excellency I could do nothing. ²⁴ If I have made gold my hope, and have said to the fine gold, [Thou art] my confidence; ²⁵ If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much; ²⁶ If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness; ²⁷ And my heart hath been secretly enticed, and my mouth hath kissed my hand: ²⁸ This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judges: for I should have lied to God that is above. ²⁹ If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him; ³⁰ (Yea, I suffered not my mouth to sin by asking his life with a curse;) ³¹ If the men of my tent said not, Who can find one that hath not been satisfied with his flesh? ³² The stranger did not lodge in the street; but I opened my doors to the traveller; ³³ If like Adam I covered my transgressions, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom; ³⁴ Because I feared the great multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and went not out of the door— ³⁵ Oh that I had one to hear me! (lo, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me;) and [that I had] the indictment which mine adversary hath written! ³⁶ Surely I would carry it upon my shoulder; I would bind it unto me as a crown. ³⁷ I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him. ³⁸ If my land cry out against me, and the furrows thereof weep together; ³⁹ If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life: ⁴⁰ Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

² that the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all that they chose.

² And it came to pass at eventide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. ³ And David sent and inquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bath-sheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? ⁴ And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; (for she was purified from her uncleanness;) and she returned unto her house.

³⁷ Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity, and quicken me in thy ways.

²⁵ Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.

²⁵ Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.

³¹ Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth its colour in the cup, when it goeth down smoothly. ³² At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder. ³³ Thine eyes shall behold strange things, and thine heart shall utter froward things.

²⁸ but I say unto you, that every one that looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. ²⁹ And if thy right eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell.

¹⁴ but each man is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed. ¹⁵ Then the lust, when it hath conceived, beareth sin: and the sin, when it is fullgrown, bringeth forth death.

¹⁶ For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the vainglory of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

²⁹ This is the portion of a wicked man from God, and the heritage appointed unto him by God.

¹³ This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, which they receive from the Almighty.

⁴ [Let] marriage [be] had in honour among all, and [let] the bed [be] undefiled: for fornicators and adulterers God will judge.

³⁰ That the evil man is reserved to the day of calamity? that they are led forth to the day of wrath?

²² There is no darkness, nor shadow of death, where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.

²³ But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloodthirsty and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee.

¹⁸ Surely thou settest them in slippery places: thou castest them down to destruction.

²⁷ When your fear cometh as a storm, and your calamity cometh on as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish come upon you.

²⁹ The way of the LORD is a strong hold to the upright; but it is a destruction to the workers of iniquity.

¹⁵ It is joy to the righteous to do judgment; but it is a destruction to the workers of iniquity.

²¹ For the LORD shall rise up as in mount Perazim, he shall be wroth as in the valley of Gibeon; that he may do his work, his strange work, and bring to pass his act, his strange act.

¹³ Enter ye in by the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many be they that enter in thereby.

²² What if God, willing to shew his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering vessels of wrath fitted unto destruction:

³ When they are saying, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall in no wise escape.

⁹ who shall suffer punishment, [even] eternal destruction from the face of the Lord and from the glory of his might,

¹ But there arose false prophets also among the people, as among you also there shall be false teachers, who shall privily bring in destructive heresies, denying even the Master that bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction.

⁷ Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them, having in like manner with these given themselves over to fornication, and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the punishment of eternal fire.

¹³ And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou art a God that seeth: for she said, Have I even here looked after him that seeth me?

⁹ For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Herein thou hast done foolishly; for from henceforth thou shalt have wars.

¹⁶ But now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?

²¹ For his eyes are upon the ways of a man, and he seeth all his goings.

²¹ Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

¹ For the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. LORD, thou hast searched me, and known [me]. ² Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. ³ Thou searchest out my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.

²¹ For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he maketh level all his paths.

³ The eyes of the LORD are in every place, keeping watch upon the evil and the good.

¹⁷ For mine eyes are upon all their ways: they are not hid from my face, neither is their iniquity concealed from mine eyes.

¹⁹ great in counsel, and mighty in work: whose eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men; to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:

⁴⁸ Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.

¹³ And there is no creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and laid open before the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

² O ye sons of men, how long shall my glory be turned into dishonour? [how long] will ye love vanity, and seek after falsehood? Selah

³ O LORD my God, if I have done this; if there be iniquity in my hands; ⁴ If I have rewarded evil unto him that was at peace with me; (yea, I have delivered him that without cause was mine adversary:) ⁵ Let the enemy pursue my soul, and overtake it; yea, let him tread my life down to the earth, and lay my glory in the dust. Selah

² They speak vanity every one with his neighbour: with flattering lip, and with a double heart, do they speak.

²⁰ If we have forgotten the name of our God, or spread forth our hands to a strange god; ²¹ Shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

¹¹ He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain [persons] is void of understanding.

⁵ thus saith the LORD, What unrighteousness have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain?

⁸ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD: Because ye have spoken vanity, and seen lies, therefore, behold, I am against you, saith the Lord GOD.

¹¹ If a man walking in wind and falsehood do lie, [saying], I will prophesy unto thee of wine and of strong drink; he shall even be the prophet of this people.

²² The LORD, the God of gods, the LORD, the God of gods, he knoweth, and Israel he shall know; if it be in rebellion, or if in trespass against the LORD, (save thou us not this day,)

³ Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.

² Oh that my vexation were but weighed, and my calamity laid in the balances together!

⁵ God forbid that I should justify you: till I die I will not put away mine integrity from me. ⁶ My righteousness I hold fast, and will not let it go: my heart shall not reproach [me] so long as I live.

⁶ For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the wicked shall perish.

⁸ The LORD ministereth judgment to the peoples: judge me, O LORD, according to my righteousness, and to mine integrity that is in me. ⁹ Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end, but establish thou the righteous: for the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins.

² Let my sentence come forth from thy presence; let thine eyes look upon equity. ³ Thou hast proved mine heart; thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast tried me, and findest nothing; I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.

¹ [A Psalm] of David. Judge me, O LORD, for I have walked in mine integrity: I have trusted also in the LORD without wavering.

²³ Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me and know my thoughts:

¹¹ A just balance and scales are the LORD’S: all the weights of the bag are his work.

⁷ The way of the just is uprightness: thou that art up right dost direct the path of the just.

²⁷ TEKEL; thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting.

¹¹ Shall I be pure with wicked balances, and with a bag of deceitful weights?

²³ And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

¹⁹ Howbeit the firm foundation of God standeth, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his: and, Let every one that nameth the name of the Lord depart from unrighteousness.

³⁹ and it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that ye go not about after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go a whoring:

³⁰ If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands never so clean;

¹¹ My foot hath held fast to his steps; his way have I kept, and turned not aside.

³ I will set no base thing before mine eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave unto me.

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

¹⁵ He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from looking upon evil;

⁹ And they that escape of you shall remember me among the nations whither they shall be carried captives, how that I have been broken with their whorish heart, which hath departed from me, and with their eyes, which go a whoring after their idols: and they shall loathe themselves in their own sight for the evils which they have committed in all their abominations.

³ Son of man, these men have taken their idols into their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be inquired of at all by them?

⁷ For every one of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn in Israel, which separateth himself from me, and taketh his idols into his heart, and putteth the stumblingblock of his iniquity before his face, and cometh to the prophet to inquire for himself of me; I the LORD will answer him by myself:

²⁹ And if thy right eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not thy whole body be cast into hell.

¹⁶ I also will do this unto you; I will appoint terror over you, even consumption and fever, that shall consume the eyes, and make the soul to pine away: and ye shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it.

³⁰ Thou shalt betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her: thou shalt build an house, and thou shalt not dwell therein: thou shalt plant a vineyard, and shalt not use the fruit thereof. ³¹ Thine ox shall be slain before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof: thine ass shall be violently taken away from before thy face, and shall not be restored to thee: thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies, and thou shalt have none to save thee. ³² Thy sons and thy daughters shall be given unto another people, and thine eyes shall look, and fail with longing for them all the day: and there shall be nought in the power of thine hand. ³³ The fruit of thy ground, and all thy labours, shall a nation which thou knowest not eat up; and thou shalt be only oppressed and crushed alway:

³⁸ Thou shalt carry much seed out into the field, and shalt gather little in; for the locust shall consume it.

⁵¹ and he shall eat the fruit of thy cattle, and the fruit of thy ground, until thou be destroyed: which also shall not leave thee corn, wine, or oil, the increase of thy kine, or the young of thy flock, until he have caused thee to perish.

³ And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east; they came up against them; ⁴ and they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance in Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass. ⁵ For they came up with their cattle and their tents, they came in as locusts for multitude; both they and their camels were without number: and they came into the land to destroy it. ⁶ And Israel was brought very low because of Midian; and the children of Israel cried unto the LORD.

⁴ His children are far from safety, and they are crushed in the gate, neither is there any to deliver them. ⁵ Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the snare gapeth for their substance.

³⁰ He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.

¹⁹ He shall have neither son nor son’s son among his people, nor any remaining where he sojourned.

¹⁸ That which he laboured for shall he restore, and shall not swallow it down; according to the substance that he hath gotten, he shall not rejoice.

⁶ They cut their provender in the field; and they glean the vintage of the wicked.

¹³ Let his posterity be cut off; in the generation following let their name be blotted out.

¹⁵ Thou shalt sow, but shalt not reap: thou shalt tread the olives, but shalt not anoint thee with oil; and the vintage, but shalt not drink the wine.

⁵ And the lords of the Philistines came up unto her, and said unto her, Entice him, and see wherein his great strength lieth, and by what means we may prevail against him, that we may bind him to afflict him: and we will give thee every one of us eleven hundred [pieces] of silver.

⁴ For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heart after other gods: and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God, as was the heart of David his father.

²⁶ Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, and he was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did strange women cause to sin.

¹⁵ The eye also of the adulterer waiteth for the twilight, saying, No eye shall see me: and he disguiseth his face. ¹⁶ In the dark they dig through houses: they shut themselves up in the daytime; they know not the light.

¹⁶ To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words; ¹⁷ Which forsaketh the friend of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God: ¹⁸ For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead: ¹⁹ None that go unto her return again, neither do they attain unto the paths of life:

³ For the lips of a strange woman drop honey, and her mouth is smoother than oil: ⁴ But her latter end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword. ⁵ Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on Sheol; ⁶ So that she findeth not the level path of life: her ways are unstable [and] she knoweth [it] not. ⁷ Now therefore, [my] sons, hearken unto me, and depart not from the words of my mouth. ⁸ Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house: ⁹ Lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel: ¹⁰ Lest strangers be filled with thy strength; and thy labours [be] in the house of an alien; ¹¹ And thou mourn at thy latter end, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed, ¹² And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; ¹³ Neither have I obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me! ¹⁴ I was well nigh in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly. ¹⁵ Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well. ¹⁶ Should thy springs be dispersed abroad, and rivers of water in the streets? ¹⁷ Let them be for thyself alone, and not for strangers with thee. ¹⁸ Let thy fountain be blessed; and rejoice in the wife of thy youth. ¹⁹ [As] a loving hind and a pleasant doe, let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love. ²⁰ For why shouldest thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger? ²¹ For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he maketh level all his paths. ²² His own iniquities shall take the wicked, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sin. ²³ He shall die for lack of instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

²¹ With her much fair speech she causeth him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forceth him away.

¹⁴ The mouth of strange women is a deep pit: he that is abhorred of the LORD shall fall therein.

²⁶ And I find a thing more bitter than death, [even] the woman whose heart is snares and nets, [and] her hands [as] bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.

⁸ They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour’s wife.

⁴ They are all adulterers; they are as an oven heated by the baker; he ceaseth to stir [the fire], from the kneading of the dough until it be leavened.

⁵ and all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne, even unto the firstborn of the maidservant that is behind the mill; and all the firstborn of cattle.

³⁰ Thou shalt betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her: thou shalt build an house, and thou shalt not dwell therein: thou shalt plant a vineyard, and shalt not use the fruit thereof.

¹¹ Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.

² Take the millstones, and grind meal: remove thy veil, strip off the train, uncover the leg, pass through the rivers.

¹⁰ Therefore will I give their wives unto others, and their fields to them that shall possess them: for every one from the least even unto the greatest is given to covetousness, from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.

¹³ They sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains, and burn incense upon the hills, under oaks and poplars and terebinths, because the shadow thereof is good: therefore your daughters commit whoredom, and your brides commit adultery. ¹⁴ I will not punish your daughters when they commit whoredom, nor your brides when they commit adultery; for they themselves go apart with whores, and they sacrifice with the harlots: and the people that doth not understand shall be overthrown.

⁴¹ two women [shall be] grinding at the mill; one is taken, and one is left.

⁹ Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him, What hast thou done unto us? and wherein have I sinned against thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.

¹⁰ And Abimelech said, What is this thou hast done unto us? one of the people might lightly have lain with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us.

²⁴ And it came to pass about three months after, that it was told Judah, saying, Tamar thy daughter in law hath played the harlot; and moreover, behold, she is with child by whoredom. And Judah said, Bring her forth, and let her be burnt.

⁹ there is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?

¹⁴ Thou shalt not commit adultery.

¹⁰ And the man that committeth adultery with another man’s wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.

²² If a man be found lying with a woman married to an husband, then they shall both of them die, the man that lay with the woman, and the woman: so shalt thou put away the evil from Israel. ²³ If there be a damsel that is a virgin betrothed unto an husband, and a man find her in the city, and lie with her; ²⁴ then ye shall bring them both out unto the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die; the damsel, because she cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he hath humbled his neighbour’s wife: so thou shalt put away the evil from the midst of thee.

²⁸ This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judges: for I should have lied to God that is above.

²⁹ So he that goeth in to his nieghbour’s wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be unpunished. ³⁰ Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry: ³¹ But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house. ³² He that committeth adultery with a woman is void of understanding: he doeth it that would destroy his own soul. ³³ Wounds and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.

³⁸ And I will judge thee, as women that break wedlock and shed blood are judged; and I will bring upon thee the blood of fury and jealousy.

²⁸ The increase of his house shall depart, [his goods] shall flow away in the day of his wrath.

⁶ Sheol is naked before him, and Abaddon hath no covering.

³³ The curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked; but he blesseth the habitation of the righteous.

²⁷ Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?

⁷ How can I pardon thee? thy children have forsaken me, and sworn by them that are no gods: when I had fed them to the full, they committed adultery, and assembled themselves in troops at the harlots’ houses. ⁸ They were as fed horses in the morning: every one neighed after his neighbour’s wife. ⁹ shall I not visit for these things? saith the LORD: and shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?

⁵ And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers; and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger [from his right], and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts.

²⁰ And if a man smite his servant, or his maid, with a rod, and he die under his hand; he shall surely be punished. ²¹ Notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, he shall not be punished: for he is his money.

²⁶ And if a man smite the eye of his servant, or the eye of his maid, and destroy it; he shall let him go free for his eye’s sake. ²⁷ And if he smite out his manservant’s tooth, or his maidservant’s tooth; he shall let him go free for his tooth’s sake.

⁴³ Thou shalt not rule over him with rigour; but shalt fear thy God.

⁴⁶ And ye shall make them an inheritance for your children after you, to hold for a possession; of them shall ye take your bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel ye shall not rule, one over another, with rigour.

¹² If thy brother, an Hebrew man, or an Hebrew woman, be sold unto thee, and serve thee six years; then in the seventh year thou shalt let him go free from thee. ¹³ And when thou lettest him go free from thee, thou shalt not let him go empty: ¹⁴ thou shalt furnish him liberally out of thy flock, and out of thy threshing-floor, and out of thy winepress: as the LORD thy God hath blessed thee thou shalt give unto him. ¹⁵ And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt, and the LORD thy God redeemed thee: therefore I command thee this thing today.

¹⁴ Thou shalt not oppress an hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he be of thy brethren, or of thy strangers that are in thy land within thy gates: ¹⁵ in his day thou shalt give him his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and setteth his heart upon it: lest he cry against thee unto the LORD, and it be sin unto thee.

¹⁴ At the end of seven years ye shall let go every man his brother that is an Hebrew, which hath been sold unto thee, and hath served thee six years, thou shalt let him go free from thee: but your fathers hearkened not unto me, neither inclined their ear. ¹⁵ And ye were now turned, and had done that which is right in mine eyes, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbour; and ye had made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name: ¹⁶ but ye turned and profaned my name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom ye had let go free at their pleasure, to return; and ye brought them into subjection, to be unto you for servants and for handmaids. ¹⁷ Therefore thus saith the LORD: Ye have not hearkened unto me, to proclaim liberty, every man to his brother, and every man to his neighbour: behold, I proclaim unto you a liberty, saith the LORD, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be tossed to and fro among all the kingdoms of the earth.

⁹ And, ye masters, do the same things unto them, and forbear threatening: knowing that both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no respect of persons with him.

¹ Masters, render unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.

³² For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, that we should come together in judgment.

² I will say unto God, Do not condemn me; shew me wherefore thou contendest with me.

⁶ Arise, O LORD, in thine anger, lift up thyself against the rage of mine adversaries: and awake for me; thou hast commanded judgment.

¹² For he that maketh inquisition for blood remembereth them: he forgetteth not the cry of the poor.

¹⁹ Arise, O LORD; let not man prevail: let the nations be judged in thy sight.

¹² Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up thine hand: forget not the poor. ¹³ Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God, and say in his heart, Thou wilt not require [it]? ¹⁴ Thon hast seen [it]; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to take it into thy hand: the helpless committeth [himself] unto thee; thou hast been the helper of the fatherless. ¹⁵ Break thou the arm of the wicked; and as for the evil man, seek out his wickedness till thou find none.

² And enter not into judgment with thy servant; for in thy sight shall no man living be justified.

³ And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from far? to whom will ye flee for help? and where will ye leave your glory?

⁷ The days of visitation are come, the days of recompence are come; Israel shall know it: the prophet is a fool, the man that hath the spirit is mad, for the multitude of thine iniquity, and because the enmity is great.

⁴ The best of them is as a brier: the most upright is [worse] than a thorn hedge: the day of thy watchmen, even thy visitation, is come; now shall be their perplexity.

¹³ Be silent, all flesh, before the LORD: for he is waked up out of his holy habitation.

² and had seen that some of his disciples ate their bread with defiled, that is, unwashen, hands.

¹⁹ Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it speaketh to them that are under the law; that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may be brought under the judgment of God:

¹³ For judgment [is] without mercy to him that hath shewed no mercy: mercy glorieth against judgment.

⁵ Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought into bondage [already]: neither is it in our power to help it; for other men have our fields and our vineyards.

³ Is it good unto thee that thou shouldest oppress, that thou shouldest despise the work of thine hands, and shine upon the counsel of the wicked?

⁸ Thine hands have framed me and fashioned me together round about; yet thou dost destroy me. ⁹ Remember, I beseech thee, that thou hast fashioned me as clay; and wilt thou bring me into dust again? ¹⁰ Hast thou not poured me out as milk, and curdled me like cheese? ¹¹ Thou hast clothed me with skin and flesh, and knit me together with bones and sinews. ¹² Thou hast granted me life and favour, and thy visitation hath preserved my spirit.

¹⁹ [How much less to] him that respecteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands.

¹⁴ I will give thanks unto thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: wonderful are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. ¹⁵ My frame was not hidden from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. ¹⁶ Thine eyes did see mine unperfect substance, and in thy book were all [my members] written, which day by day were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.

³¹ He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker: but he that hath mercy on the needy honoureth him.

² The rich and the poor meet together: the LORD is the maker of them all.

⁷ Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?

¹⁰ Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, profaning the covenant of our fathers?

⁷ If there be with thee a poor man, one of thy brethren, within any of thy gates in thy land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother: ⁸ but thou shalt surely open thine hand unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need [in that] which he wanteth. ⁹ Beware that there be not a base thought in thine heart, saying, The seventh year, the year of release, is at hand; and thine eye be evil against thy poor brother, and thou give him nought; and he cry unto the LORD against thee, and it be sin unto thee. ¹⁰ Thou shalt surely give him, and thine heart shall not be grieved when thou givest unto him: because that for this thing the LORD thy God shall bless thee in all thy work, and in all that thou puttest thine hand unto.

³² Thy sons and thy daughters shall be given unto another people, and thine eyes shall look, and fail with longing for them all the day: and there shall be nought in the power of thine hand.

¹⁶ So the poor hath hope, and iniquity stoppeth her mouth.

¹⁹ For he hath oppressed and forsaken the poor; he hath violently taken away an house, and he shall not build it up.

⁷ Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink, and thou hast withholden bread from the hungry. ⁸ But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honourable man, he dwelt in it. ⁹ Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

³ I am weary with my crying; my throat is dried: mine eyes fail while I wait for my God.

⁹ He hath dispersed, he hath given to the needy; his righteousness endureth for ever: his horn shall be exalted with honour.

⁸² Mine eyes fail for thy word, while I say, When wilt thou comfort me?

¹²³ Mine eyes fail for thy salvation, and for thy righteous word.

¹⁴ Like a swallow [or] a crane, so did I chatter; I did mourn as a dove: mine eyes fail [with looking] upward; O LORD, I am oppressed, be thou my surety.

¹⁷ Our eyes do yet fail [in looking] for our vain help; in our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save.

²¹ and desiring to be fed with the [crumbs] that fell from the rich man’s table; yea, even the dogs came and licked his sores.

²⁹ And the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren that dwelt in Judaea:

¹⁰ only [they would] that we should remember the poor; which very thing I was also zealous to do.

¹¹ For the poor shall never cease out of the land: therefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt surely open thine hand unto thy brother, to thy needy, and to thy poor, in thy land.

¹⁴ thou shalt furnish him liberally out of thy flock, and out of thy threshing-floor, and out of thy winepress: as the LORD thy God hath blessed thee thou shalt give unto him.

¹⁰ Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto him for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye grieved; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.

⁷ and hath not wronged any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath spoiled none by violence, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment;

³² And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and soul: and not one [of them] said that aught of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.

¹³ communicating to the necessities of the saints; given to hospitality.

²⁷ Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, [and] to keep himself unspotted from the world.

¹⁷ But whoso hath the world’s goods, and beholdeth his brother in need, and shutteth up his compassion from him, how doth the love of God abide in him?

¹⁵ And the men which have been expressed by name rose up, and took the captives, and with the spoil clothed all that were naked among them, and arrayed them, and shod them, and gave them to eat and to drink, and anointed them, and carried all the feeble of them upon asses, and brought them to Jericho, the city of palm trees, unto their brethren: then they returned to Samaria.

⁶ For thou hast taken pledges of thy brother for nought, and stripped the naked of their clothing.

⁴ They turn the needy out of the way: the poor of the earth hide themselves together.

¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.

³⁶ naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

⁴³ I was a stranger, and ye took me not in; naked, and ye clothed me not; sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.

¹¹ And he answered and said unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath food, let him do likewise.

³⁹ And Peter arose and went with them. And when he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them.

¹⁶ and one of you say unto them, Go in peace, be ye warmed and filled; and yet ye give them not the things needful to the body; what doth it profit?

¹⁸ [My] little children, let us not love in word, neither with the tongue; but in deed and truth.

¹³ thou shalt surely restore to him the pledge when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his garment, and bless thee: and it shall be righteousness unto thee before the LORD thy God.

¹¹ For when the ear heard [me], then it blessed me; and when the eye saw [me], it gave witness unto me:

²⁷ Yea, ye would cast [lots] upon the fatherless, and make merchandise of your friend.

⁹ Thou hast sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken.

⁹ There are that pluck the fatherless from the breast, and take a pledge of the poor:

¹² Because I delivered the poor that cried, the fatherless also, that had none to help him.

¹⁰ Remove not the ancient landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless: ¹¹ For their redeemer is strong; he shall plead their cause against thee.

²⁸ They are waxen fat, they shine: yea, they overpass in deeds of wickedness: they plead not the cause, the cause of the fatherless, that they should prosper; and the right of the needy do they not judge.

⁷ In thee have they set light by father and mother; in the midst of thee, have they dealt by oppression with the stranger: in thee have they wronged the fatherless and the widow.

¹ Woe to them that devise iniquity and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they practise it, because it is in the power of their hand. ² And they covet fields, and seize them; and houses, and take them away: and they oppress a man and his house, even a man and his heritage.

³ Their hands are upon that which is evil to do it diligently; the prince asketh, and the judge [is ready] for a reward; and the great man, he uttereth the mischief of his soul: thus they weave it together.

²² The LORD, the God of gods, the LORD, the God of gods, he knoweth, and Israel he shall know; if it be in rebellion, or if in trespass against the LORD, (save thou us not this day,) ²³ that we have built us an altar to turn away from following the LORD; or if to offer thereon burnt offering or meal offering, or if to offer sacrifices of peace offerings thereon, let the LORD himself require it;

¹⁰ Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.

⁴⁰ Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

¹⁵ And from the wicked their light is withholden, and the high arm is broken.

⁶ Let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth, if I remember thee not; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.

¹¹ Shall not his excellency make you afraid, and his dread fall upon you?

²³ When he is about to fill his belly, [God] shall cast the fierceness of his wrath upon him, and shall rain it upon him while he is eating.

²⁰ Let his own eyes see his destruction, and let him drink of the wrath of the Almighty.

⁹ Or hast thou an arm like God? and canst thou thunder with a voice like him?

⁵ I had heard of thee by the hearing of the ear; but now mine eye seeth thee, ⁶ Wherefore I abhor [myself], and repent in dust and ashes.

⁷ Thou, even thou, art to be feared: and who may stand in thy sight when once thou art angry?

¹²⁰ My flesh trembleth for fear of thee; and I am afraid of thy judgments.

⁶ Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; as destruction from the Almighty shall it come.

¹⁵ Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as destruction from the Almighty shall it come,

¹¹ Knowing therefore the fear of the Lord, we persuade men, but we are made manifest unto God; and I hope that we are made manifest also in your consciences.

¹ And he heard the words of Laban’s sons, saying, Jacob hath taken away all that was our father’s; and of that which was our father’s hath he gotten all this glory.

¹² lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein; ¹³ and when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied; ¹⁴ then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage;

⁶ They that trust in their wealth, and boast themselves in the multitude of their riches; ⁷ None [of them] can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:

¹⁷ For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away; his glory shall not descend after him.

⁷ Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.

¹⁰ Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery: if riches increase, set not your heart [thereon].

¹⁵ The rich man’s wealth is his strong city: the destruction of the poor is their poverty.

²⁸ He that trusteth in his riches shall fall: but the righteous shall flourish as the green leaf.

⁹ Lest I be full, and deny [thee], and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and use profanely the name of my God.

²⁴ And the disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! ²⁵ It is easier for a camel to go through a needle’s eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

¹⁵ And he said unto them, Take heed, and keep yourselves from all covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.

⁵ Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, the which is idolatry;

¹⁰ For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil: which some reaching after have been led astray from the faith, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

¹⁷ Charge them that are rich in this present world, that they be not highminded, nor have their hope set on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;

¹⁷ and thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth. ¹⁸ But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God, for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth; that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as at this day.

¹¹ And Haman recounted unto them the glory of his riches, and the multitude of his children, and all the things wherein the king had promoted him, and how he had advanced him above the princes and servants of the king.

⁵ Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for [riches] certainly make themselves wings, like an eagle that flieth toward heaven.

¹³ For he hath said, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am prudent: and I have removed the bounds of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and I have brought down as a valiant man them that sit [on thrones]: ¹⁴ and my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the peoples; and as one gathereth eggs that are forsaken, have I gathered all the earth: and there was none that moved the wing, or that opened the mouth, or chirped.

²³ Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches:

⁵ by thy great wisdom [and] by thy traffic hast thou increased thy riches, and thine heart is lifted up because of thy riches:

³⁰ The king spake and said, Is not this great Babylon, which I have built for the royal dwelling place, by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty?

⁸ And Ephraim said, Surely I am become rich, I have found me wealth: in all my labours they shall find in me none iniquity that were sin.

¹⁶ Therefore he sacrificeth unto his net, and burneth incense unto his drag; because by them his portion is fat, and his meat plenteous.

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry.

¹⁹ Now there was a certain rich man, and he was clothed in purple and fine linen, faring sumptuously every day:

²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things: but now here he is comforted, and thou art in anguish.

¹⁶ And God made the two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: [he made] the stars also. ¹⁷ And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, ¹⁸ and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

¹⁹ and lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun and the moon and the stars, even all the host of heaven, thou be drawn away and worship them, and serve them, which the LORD thy God hath divided unto all the peoples under the whole heaven.

¹⁶ Take heed to yourselves, lest your heart be deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them;

³ and hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, or the sun, or the moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded;

⁵ And he put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense unto Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven.

¹¹ And he took away the horses that the kings of Judah had given to the sun, at the entering in of the house of the LORD, by the chamber of Nathan-melech the chamberlain, which was in the precincts; and he burned the chariots of the sun with fire.

³ When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; ⁴ What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

² and they shall spread them before the sun, and the moon, and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved, and whom they have served, and after whom they have walked, and whom they have sought, and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth.

¹⁷ But we will certainly perform every word that is gone forth out of our mouth, to burn incense unto the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto her, as we have done, we and our fathers, our kings and our princes, in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem: for then had we plenty of victuals, and were well, and saw no evil.

¹⁶ And he brought me into the inner court of the LORD’S house, and behold, at the door of the temple of the LORD, between the porch and the altar, were about five and twenty men, with their backs toward the temple of the LORD, and their faces toward the east; and they worshipped the sun toward the east.

⁶ If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers;

¹⁸ Yet will I leave [me] seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.

¹² Kiss the son, lest he be angry, and ye perish in the way, for his wrath will soon be kindled. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

²⁰ He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?

² And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver, even idols according to their own understanding, all of them the work of the craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves.

²¹ because that, knowing God, they glorified him not as God, neither gave thanks; but became vain in their reasonings, and their senseless heart was darkened.

²⁸ And even as they refused to have God in [their] knowledge, God gave them up unto a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not fitting;

²⁵ That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked, that so the righteous should be as the wicked; that be far from thee: shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?

² If there be found in the midst of thee, within any of thy gates which the LORD thy God giveth thee, man or woman, that doeth that which is evil in the sight of the LORD thy God, in transgressing his covenant, ³ and hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, or the sun, or the moon, or any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded; ⁴ and it be told thee, and thou hast heard of it, then shalt thou inquire diligently, and, behold, if it be true, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought in Israel; ⁵ then shalt thou bring forth that man or that woman, which have done this evil thing, unto thy gates, even the man or the woman; and thou shalt stone them with stones, that they die. ⁶ At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is to die be put to death; at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death. ⁷ The hand of the witnesses shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people. So thou shalt put away the evil from the midst of thee.

⁹ and thou shalt come unto the priests the Levites, and unto the judge that shall be in those days: and thou shalt inquire; and they shall shew thee the sentence of judgment:

²³ Now therefore put away, [said he], the strange gods which are among you, and incline your heart unto the LORD, the God of Israel.

²⁷ And Joshua said unto all the people, Behold, this stone shall be a witness against us; for it hath heard all the words of the LORD which he spake unto us: it shall be therefore a witness against you, lest ye deny your God.

²⁷ I therefore have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the LORD, the Judge, be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.

¹⁵ Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer; I would make supplication to mine adversary.

⁷ There the upright might reason with him; so should I be delivered for ever from my judge.

¹¹ For that were an heinous crime; yea, it were an iniquity to be punished by the judges:

⁶ And the heavens shall declare his righteousness; for God is judge himself. Selah

¹⁶ They profess that they know God; but by their works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

²³ to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,

²³ Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not the Father: he that confesseth the Son hath the Father also.

⁴ For there are certain men crept in privily, [even] they who were of old set forth unto this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

¹² and they mourned, and wept, and fasted until even, for Saul, and for Jonathan his son, and for the people of the LORD, and for the house of Israel; because they were fallen by the sword.

¹⁰ when one told me, saying, Behold, Saul is dead, thinking to have brought good tidings, I took hold of him, and slew him in Ziklag, which was the reward I gave him for his tidings. ¹¹ How much more, when wicked men have slain a righteous person in his own house upon his bed, shall I not now require his blood of your hand, and take you away from the earth?

⁵ And when king David came to Bahurim, behold, there came out thence a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera: he came out, and cursed still as he came. ⁶ And he cast stones at David, and at all the servants of king David: and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left. ⁷ And thus said Shimei when he cursed, Begone, begone, thou man of blood, and man of Belial: ⁸ The LORD hath returned upon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead thou hast reigned; and the LORD hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom thy son: and, behold, thou art [taken] in thine own mischief, because thou art a man of blood.

¹³ But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I afflicted my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into mine own bosom. ¹⁴ I behaved myself as though it had been my friend or my brother: I bowed down mourning, as one that bewaileth his mother.

²⁵ Let them not say in their heart, Aha, so would we have it: let them not say, We have swallowed him up. ²⁶ Let them be ashamed and confounded together that rejoice at mine hurt: let them be clothed with shame and dishonour that magnify themselves against me.

⁵ Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: [and] he that is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.

¹⁷ Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thine heart be glad when he is overthrown: ¹⁸ Lest the LORD see it, and it displease him, and he turn away his wrath from him.

¹² But look not thou on the day of thy brother in the day of his disaster, and rejoice not over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither speak proudly in the day of distress.

⁴ If thou meet thine enemy’s ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again. ⁵ If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee lying under his burden, and wouldest forbear to help him, thou shalt surely help with him.

² Be not rash with thy month, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God; for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.

⁶ Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands?

²² but I say unto you, that every one who is angry with his brother shall be in danger of the judgment; and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council; and whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of the hell of fire.

⁴³ Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy: ⁴⁴ but I say unto you, Love your enemies, and pray for them that persecute you;

³⁶ And I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

¹⁴ Bless them that persecute you; bless, and curse not.

⁶ And the tongue is a fire: the world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell.

⁹ Therewith bless we the Lord and Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the likeness of God: ¹⁰ out of the same mouth cometh forth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

²² who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: ²³ who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, threatened not; but committed [himself] to him that judgeth righteously:

⁹ not rendering evil for evil, or reviling for reviling; but contrariwise blessing; for hereunto were ye called, that ye should inherit a blessing.

⁴ And the men of David said unto him, Behold, the day of which the LORD said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, and thou shalt do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul’s robe privily.

¹⁰ Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee today into mine hand in the cave: and some bade me kill thee: but [mine eye] spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he is the LORD’S anointed.

⁸ Then said Abishai to David, God hath delivered up thine enemy into thine hand this day: now therefore let me smite him, I pray thee, with the spear to the earth at one stroke, and I will not smite him the second time.

⁹ Then said Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king, Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray thee, and take off his head. ¹⁰ And the king said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? Because he curseth, and because the LORD hath said unto him, Curse David; who then shall say, Wherefore hast thou done so?

²¹ But Abishai the son of Zeruiah answered and said, Shall not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the LORD’S anointed? ²² And David said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah, that ye should this day be adversaries unto me? shall there any man be put to death this day in Israel? for do not I know that I am this day king over Israel?

²² Why do ye persecute me as God, and are not satisfied with my flesh?

² When evil-doers came upon me to eat up my flesh, [even] mine adversaries and my foes, they stumbled and fell.

²⁵ Let them not say in their heart, Aha, so would we have it: let them not say, We have swallowed him up.

¹¹ If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause; ¹² Let us swallow them up alive as Sheol, and whole, as those that go down into the pit;

¹⁸ And these lay wait for their own blood, they lurk privily for their own lives.

¹⁵ Then Johanan the son of Kareah spake to Gedaliah in Mizpah secretly, saying, Let me go, I pray thee, and I will slay Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no man shall know it: wherefore should he take thy life, that all the Jews which are gathered unto thee should be scattered, and the remnant of Judah perish? ¹⁶ But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said unto Johanan the son of Kareah, Thou shalt not do this thing: for thou speakest falsely of Ishmael.

² who hate the good, and love the evil; who pluck off their skin from off them, and their flesh from off their bones; ³ who also eat the flesh of my people; and they flay their skin from off them, and break their bones: yea, they chop them in pieces, as for the pot, and as flesh within the caldron.

⁵⁴ And when his disciples James and John saw [this], they said, Lord, wilt thou that we bid fire to come down from heaven, and consume them? ⁵⁵ But he turned, and rebuked them.

⁵⁰ And a certain one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and struck off his right ear. ⁵¹ But Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.

² and he said, Behold now, my lords, turn aside, I pray you, into your servant’s house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your way. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night. ³ And he urged them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.

¹⁵ And they turned aside thither, to go in to lodge in Gibeah: and he went in, and sat him down in the street of the city: for there was no man that took them into his house to lodge.

²⁰ And the old man said, Peace be unto thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street. ²¹ So he brought him into his house, and gave the asses fodder: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.

¹⁷ Or have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof; ¹⁸ (Nay, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, and I have been her guide from my mother’s womb;)

³⁵ for I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in;

⁴⁰ And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it unto one of these my brethren, [even] these least, ye did it unto me.

⁴⁴ Then shall they also answer, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee? ⁴⁵ Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not unto one of these least, ye did it not unto me.

¹⁰ well reported of for good works; if she hath brought up children, if she hath used hospitality to strangers, if she hath washed the saints’ feet, if she hath relieved the afflicted, if she hath diligently followed every good work.

² Forget not to shew love unto strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

⁹ using hospitality one to another without murmuring:

⁷ And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. ⁸ And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

¹² And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

¹¹ Israel hath sinned; yea, they have even transgressed my covenant which I commanded them: yea, they have even taken of the devoted thing; and have also stolen, and dissembled also, and they have even put it among their own stuff.

¹³ He that covereth his transgressions shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall obtain mercy.

⁷ But they like Adam have transgressed the covenant: there have they dealt treacherously against me.

⁸ And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much. And she said, Yea, for so much.

⁸ If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. ⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ¹⁰ If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

² Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to turn aside after a multitude to wrest [judgment]:

²⁷ And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, Put ye every man his sword upon his thigh, and go to and fro from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbour.

¹⁴ Now the name of the man of Israel that was slain, who was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a fathers’ house among the Simeonites. ¹⁵ And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head of the people of a fathers’ house in Midian.

⁷ Then I consulted with myself, and contended with the nobles and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I held a great assembly against them.

⁴ Now before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the chambers of the house of our God, being allied unto Tobiah, ⁵ had prepared for him a great chamber, where aforetime they laid the meal offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the corn, the wine, and the oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters; and the heave offerings for the priests. ⁶ But in all this [time] I was not at Jerusalem: for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went unto the king, and after certain days asked I leave of the king: ⁷ and I came to Jerusalem, and understood of the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God. ⁸ And it grieved me sore: therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the chamber.

²⁸ And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son in law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me.

¹¹ All the king’s servants, and the people of the king’s provinces, do know, that whosoever, whether man or woman, shall come unto the king into the inner court, who is not called, there is one law for him, that he be put to death, except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that he may live: but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.

¹⁴ For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time, then shall relief and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place, but thou and thy father’s house shall perish: and who knoweth whether thou art not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?

⁸ But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honourable man, he dwelt in it.

¹¹ Deliver them that are carried away unto death, and those that are ready to be slain see that thou hold back. ¹² If thou sayest, Behold, we knew not this: doth not he that weigheth the hearts consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his work?

²⁵ The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.

⁴ Then the princes said unto the king, Let this man, we pray thee, be put to death; forasmuch as he weakeneth the hands of the men of war that remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words unto them: for this man seeketh not the welfare of this people, but the hurt. ⁵ And Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand: for the king is not he that can do any thing against you.

¹⁶ So Zedekiah the king sware secretly unto Jeremiah, saying, As the LORD liveth, that made us this soul, I will not put thee to death, neither will I give thee into the hand of these men that seek thy life.

¹⁹ And Zedekiah the king said unto Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews that are fallen away to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.

¹¹ Forasmuch therefore as ye trample upon the poor, and take exactions from him of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye shall not drink the wine thereof. ¹² For I know how manifold are your transgressions, and how mighty are your sins; ye that afflict the just, that take a bribe, and that turn aside the needy in the gate [from their right]. ¹³ Therefore he that is prudent shall keep silence in such a time; for it is an evil time.

²⁰ Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. ²¹ But the governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? And they said, Barabbas. ²² Pilate saith unto them, What then shall I do unto Jesus which is called Christ? They all say, Let him be crucified. ²³ And he said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out exceedingly, saying, Let him be crucified. ²⁴ So when Pilate saw that he prevailed nothing, but rather that a tumult was arising, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this righteous man: see ye [to it]. ²⁵ And all the people answered and said, His blood [be] on us, and on our children. ²⁶ Then released he unto them Barabbas: but Jesus he scourged and delivered to be crucified.

¹⁶ Wherefore we henceforth know no man after the flesh: even though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now we know [him so] no more.

³ Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God.

²¹ Withdraw thine hand far from me; and let not thy terror make me afraid. ²² Then call thou, and I will answer; or let me speak, and answer thou me.

²⁴ Wherefore hidest thou thy face, and holdest me for thine enemy?

³ Give now a pledge, be surety for me with thyself; who is there that will strike hands with me?

⁷ Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard: I cry for help, but there is no judgment.

¹¹ He hath also kindled his wrath against me, and he counteth me unto him as [one of] his adversaries.

²³ Oh that my words were now written! oh that they were inscribed in a book! ²⁴ That with an iron pen and lead they were graven in the rock for ever!

³ Oh that I knew where I might find him, that I might come even to his seat! ⁴ I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments. ⁵ I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say unto me. ⁶ Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power? Nay; but he would give heed unto me. ⁷ There the upright might reason with him; so should I be delivered for ever from my judge.

⁷ Let mine enemy be as the wicked, and let him that riseth up against me be as the unrighteous.

²⁸ I go mourning without the sun: I stand up in the assembly, and cry for help.

⁶ Behold, I am toward God even as thou art: I also am formed out of the clay.

¹⁰ Behold, he findeth occasions against me, he counteth me for his enemy; ¹¹ He putteth my feet in the stocks, he marketh all my paths.

¹⁴ How much less when thou sayest thou beholdest him not, the cause is before him, and thou waitest for him!

¹ Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said, ² Who is this that darkeneth counsel by words without knowledge? ³ Gird up now thy loins like a man; for I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.

⁴ Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer thee? I lay mine hand upon my mouth. ⁵ Once have I spoken, and I will not answer; yea twice, but I will proceed no further.

²⁵ Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art with him in the way; lest haply the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.

¹² And thou shalt put the two stones upon the shoulderpieces of the ephod, to be stones of memorial for the children of Israel: and Aaron shall bear their names before the LORD upon his two shoulders for a memorial.

¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my justice was as a robe and a diadem.

²² And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; and he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.

³ Thou shalt also be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God.

¹ Wherefore, my brethren beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my beloved.

²⁸ And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for thou hast striven with God and with men, and hast prevailed.

³ His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the children of the east.

³ If he be pleased to contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.

¹⁵ Though he slay me, yet will I wait for him: nevertheless I will maintain my ways before him.

²⁵ I chose out their way, and sat [as] chief, and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforteth the mourners.

³ Who is this that hideth counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered that which I understood not, things too wonderful for me, which I knew not. ⁴ Hear, I beseech thee, and I will speak; I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.

¹² Who can discern [his] errors? clear thou me from hidden [faults].

¹² in whom we have boldness and access in confidence through our faith in him.

¹⁵ For we have not a high priest that cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but one that hath been in all points tempted like as [we are, yet] without sin. ¹⁶ Let us therefore draw near with boldness unto the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy, and may find grace to help [us] in time of need.

¹⁹ Hereby shall we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our heart before him, ²⁰ whereinsoever our heart condemn us; because God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. ²¹ Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, we have boldness toward God;

²⁷ The heavens shall reveal his iniquity, and the earth shall rise up against him.

¹³ The pastures are clothed with flocks; the valleys also are covered over with corn; they shout for joy, they also sing.

¹¹ For the stone shall cry out of the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer it.

⁴ Behold, the hire of the labourers who mowed your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth out: and the cries of them that reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.

¹² when thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a wanderer shalt thou be in the earth.

¹³ And the two men, sons of Belial, came in and sat before him: and the men of Belial bare witness against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did curse God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, that he died. ¹⁴ Then they sent to Jezebel, saying, Naboth is stoned, and is dead. ¹⁵ And it came to pass, when Jezebel heard that Naboth was stoned, and was dead, that Jezebel said to Ahab, Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give thee for money: for Naboth is not alive, but dead. ¹⁶ And it came to pass, when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, that Ahab rose up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.

¹⁹ And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Hast thou killed, and also taken possession? and thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith the LORD, In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood, even thine.

¹⁹ So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; it taketh away the life of the owners thereof.

²¹ For, behold, the LORD cometh forth out of his place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity: the earth also shall disclose her blood, and shall no more cover her slain.

⁶ Behold, the princes of Israel, every one according to his power, have been in thee to shed blood.

¹² In thee have they taken bribes to shed blood; thou hast taken usury and increase, and thou hast greedily gained of thy neighbours by oppression, and hast forgotten me, saith the Lord GOD. ¹³ Behold, therefore, I have smitten mine hand at thy dishonest gain which thou hast made, and at thy blood which hath been in the midst of thee.

¹⁷ And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in toil shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; ¹⁸ thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;

²⁰ The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended.

²³ And it shall come to pass in that day, that every place, where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silverlings, shall even be for briers and thorns.

⁹ Therefore as I live, saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, Surely Moab shall be as Sodom, and the children of Ammon as Gomorrah, a possession of nettles, and saltpits, and a perpetual desolation: the residue of my people shall spoil them, and the remnant of my nation shall inherit them.

³ but Esau I hated, and made his mountains a desolation, and [gave] his heritage to the jackals of the wilderness.
