¹ But now they that are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I disdained to set with the dogs of my flock. ² Yea, the strength of their hands, whereto should it profit me? men in whom ripe age is perished. ³ They are gaunt with want and famine; they gnaw the dry ground; in the gloom of wasteness and desolation. ⁴ They pluck salt-wort by the bushes; and the roots of the broom [are] their meat. ⁵ They are driven forth from the midst [of men]; they cry after them as after a thief. ⁶ In the clefts of the valleys must they dwell, in holes of the earth and of the rocks. ⁷ Among the bushes they bray; under the nettles they are gathered together. ⁸ [They are] children of fools, yea, children of base men; they were scourged out of the land. ⁹ And now I am become their song, yea, I am a byword unto them. ¹⁰ They abhor me, they stand aloof from me, and spare not to spit in my face. ¹¹ For he hath loosed his cord, and afflicted me, and they have cast off the bridle before me. ¹² Upon my right hand rise the rabble; they thrust aside my feet, and they cast up against me their ways of destruction. ¹³ They mar my path, they set forward my calamity, [even] men that have no helper. ¹⁴ As through a wide breach they come: in the midst of the ruin they roll themselves [upon me]. ¹⁵ Terrors are turned upon me, they chase mine honour as the wind; and my welfare is passed away as a cloud. ¹⁶ And now my soul is poured out within me; days of affliction have taken hold upon me. ¹⁷ In the night season my bones are pierced in me, and the [pains] that gnaw me take no rest. ¹⁸ By the great force [of my disease] is my garment disfigured: it bindeth me about as the collar of my coat. ¹⁹ He hath cast me into the mire, and I am become like dust and ashes. ²⁰ I cry unto thee, and thou dost not answer me: I stand up, and thou lookest at me. ²¹ Thou art turned to be cruel to me: with the might of thy hand thou persecutest me. ²² Thou liftest me up to the wind, thou causest me to ride [upon it]; and thou dissolvest me in the storm. ²³ For I know that thou wilt bring me to death, and to the house appointed for all living. ²⁴ Surely against a ruinous heap he will not put forth his hand; though [it be] in his destruction, [one may utter] a cry because of these things. ²⁵ Did not I weep for him that was in trouble? was not my soul grieved for the needy? ²⁶ When I looked for good, then evil came; and when I waited for light, there came darkness. ²⁷ My bowels boil, and rest not; days of affliction are come upon me. ²⁸ I go mourning without the sun: I stand up in the assembly, and cry for help. ²⁹ I am a brother to jackals, and a companion to ostriches. ³⁰ My skin is black, [and falleth] from me, and my bones are burned with heat. ³¹ Therefore is my harp [turned] to mourning, and my pipe into the voice of them that weep.

²³ And he went up from thence unto Beth-el: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.

⁴ I am as one that is a laughing-stock to his neighbour, [a man] that called upon God, and he answered him: the just, the perfect man is a laughing-stock.

¹³ He hath put my brethren far from me, and mine acquaintance are wholly estranged from me. ¹⁴ My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me. ¹⁵ They that dwell in mine house, and my maids, count me for a stranger: I am an alien in their sight. ¹⁶ I call unto my servant, and he giveth me no answer, [though] I entreat him with my mouth. ¹⁷ My breath is strange to my wife, and my supplication to the children of my [mother’s] womb. ¹⁸ Even young children despise me; if I arise, they speak against me. ¹⁹ All my inward friends abhor me: and they whom I loved are turned against me.

⁸ The young men saw me and hid themselves, and the aged rose up and stood; ⁹ The princes refrained talking, and laid their hand on their mouth; ¹⁰ The voice of the nobles was hushed, and their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth.

¹⁵ But when I halted they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together: the abjects gathered themselves together against me, and I knew [it] not; they did tear me, and ceased not: ¹⁶ Like the profane mockers in feasts, they gnashed upon me with their teeth.

¹² They that sit in the gate talk of me; and [I am] the song of the drunkards.

⁵ And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: the child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honourable.

⁶⁵ And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him, Prophesy: and the officers received him with blows of their hands.

¹⁷ And they clothe him with purple, and plaiting a crown of thorns, they put it on him; ¹⁸ and they began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews! ¹⁹ And they smote his head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him. ²⁰ And when they had mocked him, they took off from him the purple, and put on him his garments. And they lead him out to crucify him.

¹⁴ and said unto them, Ye brought unto me this man, as one that perverteth the people: and behold, I, having examined him before you, found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him:

¹⁸ But they cried out all together, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas:

³⁵ And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also scoffed at him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if this is the Christ of God, his chosen.

³⁹ And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, Art not thou the Christ? save thyself and us.

⁵ But the Jews, being moved with jealousy, took unto them certain vile fellows of the rabble, and gathering a crowd, set the city on an uproar; and assaulting the house of Jason, they sought to bring them forth to the people.

¹² One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, Cretans are alway liars, evil beasts, idle gluttons.

⁵ Behold, as wild asses in the desert they go forth to their work, seeking diligently for meat; the wilderness [yieldeth] them food for their children.

¹³ These are of them that rebel against the light; they know not the ways thereof, nor abide in the paths thereof. ¹⁴ The murderer riseth with the light, he killeth the poor and needy; and in the night he is as a thief. ¹⁵ The eye also of the adulterer waiteth for the twilight, saying, No eye shall see me: and he disguiseth his face. ¹⁶ In the dark they dig through houses: they shut themselves up in the daytime; they know not the light.

³⁸ (of whom the world was not worthy), wandering in deserts and mountains and caves, and the holes of the earth.

¹⁶ And he would fain have been filled with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.

¹² when thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a wanderer shalt thou be in the earth. ¹³ And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear. ¹⁴ Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the ground; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that whosoever findeth me shall slay me.

⁴ In whose eyes a reprobate is despised; but he honoureth them that fear the LORD. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.

¹⁰ For he seeth that wise men die, the fool and the brutish together perish, and leave their wealth to others. ¹¹ Their inward thought is, [that] their houses [shall continue] for ever, [and] their dwelling places to all generations; they call their lands after their own names. ¹² But man abideth not in honour: he is like the beasts that perish. ¹³ This their way is their folly: yet after them men approve their sayings. ⁷ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: [but] the foolish despise wisdom and instruction.

²² How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and scorners delight them in scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

²² Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it: but the correction of fools is [their] folly.

⁶ For the vile person will speak villany, and his heart will work iniquity, to practise profaneness, and to utter error against the LORD, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and to cause the drink of the thirsty to fail.

¹⁸ The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead the dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger.

²⁴ And she went out, and said unto her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptist.

⁶ He hath made me also a byword of the people; and I am become an open abhorring.

¹⁴ Thou makest us a byword among the nations, a shaking of the head among the peoples.

¹¹ When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a proverb unto them. ¹² They that sit in the gate talk of me; and [I am] the song of the drunkards.

¹⁴ I am become a derision to all my people; and their song all the day.

⁶³ Behold thou their sitting down, and their rising up; I am their song.

¹⁴ And the LORD said unto Moses, If her father had but spit in her face, should she not be ashamed seven days? let her be shut up without the camp seven days, and after that she shall be brought in again.

⁹ then shall his brother’s wife come unto him in the presence of the elders, and loose his shoe from off his foot, and spit in his face; and she shall answer and say, So shall it be done unto the man that doth not build up his brother’s house.

⁸ And I cut off the three shepherds in one month; for my soul was weary of them, and their soul also loathed me.

⁵⁶ But all this is come to pass, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples left him, and fled.

⁶⁷ Then did they spit in his face and buffet him: and some smote him with the palms of their hands,

²¹ I went out full, and the LORD hath brought me home again empty: why call ye me Naomi, seeing the LORD hath testified against me, and the Almighty hath afflicted me?

¹⁸ He looseth the bond of kings, and bindeth their loins with a girdle.

²¹ He poureth contempt upon princes, and looseth the belt of the strong.

⁹ Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose trappings must be bit and bridle to hold them in, [else] they will not come near unto thee.

²¹ Yea, they opened their mouth wide against me; they said, Aha, aha, our eye hath seen it.

⁶⁷ Then did they spit in his face and buffet him: and some smote him with the palms of their hands, ⁶⁸ saying, Prophesy unto us, thou Christ: who is he that struck thee?

³⁹ And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, ⁴⁰ and saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself: if thou art the Son of God, come down from the cross. ⁴¹ In like manner also the chief priests mocking [him], with the scribes and elders, said, ⁴² He saved others; himself he cannot save. He is the King of Israel; let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe on him. ⁴³ He trusteth on God; let him deliver him now, if he desireth him: for he said, I am the Son of God. ⁴⁴ And the robbers also that were crucified with him cast upon him the same reproach.

²⁶ If any man thinketh himself to be religious, while he bridleth not his tongue but deceiveth his heart, this man’s religion is vain.

¹² His troops come on together, and cast up their way against me, and encamp round about my tent.

⁴ Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man: Who have purposed to thrust aside my steps. ⁵ The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the way side; they have set gins for me. Selah

²⁶ For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten; and they tell of the sorrow of those whom thou hast wounded,

¹² As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths.

¹⁵ And I am very sore displeased with the nations that are at ease: for I was but a little displeased, and they helped forward the affliction.

¹⁶ Who were snatched away before their time, whose foundation was poured out as a stream:

⁴ The cords of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodliness made me afraid.

¹⁴ Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters. ¹⁵ Let not the waterflood overwhelm me, neither let the deep swallow me up; and let not the pit shut her mouth upon me.

⁷ now therefore, behold, the Lord bringeth up upon them the waters of the River, strong and many, [even] the king of Assyria and all his glory: and he shall come up over all his channels, and go over all his banks: ⁸ and he shall sweep onward into Judah; he shall overflow and pass through; he shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel.

²⁵ For the thing which I fear cometh upon me, and that which I am afraid of cometh unto me.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me, the poison whereof my spirit drinketh up: the terrors of God do set themselves in array against me.

⁹ As the cloud is consumed and vanisheth away, so he that goeth down to Sheol shall come up no more.

¹⁴ Then thou scarest me with dreams, and terrifiest me through visions:

²⁷ If I say, I will forget my complaint, I will put off my [sad] countenance, and be of good cheer: ²⁸ I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that thou wilt not hold me innocent.

¹⁶ And if [my head] exalt itself, thou huntest me as a lion: and again thou shewest thyself marvelous upon me.

²³ For calamity from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his excellency I could do nothing.

⁴ My heart is sore pained within me: and the terrors of death are fallen upon me. ⁵ Fearfulness and trembling are come upon me, and horror hath overwhelmed me.

¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: while I suffer thy terrors I am distracted.

²² I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, thy transgressions, and, as a cloud, thy sins: return unto me; for I have redeemed thee.

⁴ O Ephraim, what shall I do unto thee? O Judah, what shall I do unto thee? for your goodness is as a morning cloud, and as the dew that goeth early away.

³ Therefore they shall be as the morning cloud, and as the dew that passeth early away, as the chaff that is driven with the whirlwind out of the threshing-floor, and as the smoke out of the chimney.

¹⁵ And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I poured out my soul before the LORD.

²⁴ For my sighing cometh before I eat, and my roarings are poured out like water.

¹⁴ I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.

¹² For innumerable evils have compassed me about, mine iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head, and my heart hath failed me.

⁴ When I lie down, I say, When shall I arise? but the night is long; and I am full of tossings to and fro unto the dawning of the day.

¹⁹ He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and with continual strife in his bones: ²⁰ So that his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty meat. ²¹ His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out.

² Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am withered away: O LORD, heal me; for my bones are vexed. ³ My soul also is sore vexed: and thou, O LORD, how long? ⁴ Return, O LORD, deliver my soul: save me for thy lovingkindness’ sake. ⁵ For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in Sheol who shall give thee thanks? ⁶ I am weary with my groaning; every night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears.

² O my God, I cry in the day-time, but thou answerest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.

² For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presseth me sore. ³ There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine indignation; neither is there any health in my bones because of my sin. ⁴ For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me. ⁵ My wounds stink and are corrupt, because of my foolishness. ⁶ I am pained and bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long. ⁷ For my loins are filled with burning; and there is no soundness in my flesh. ⁸ I am faint and sore bruised: I have roared by reason of the disquietness of my heart.

¹³ I quieted [myself] until morning; as a lion, so he breaketh all my bones: from day even to night wilt thou make an end of me.

⁷ So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

⁵ My flesh is clothed with worms and clods of dust; my skin closeth up and breaketh out afresh.

²⁰ My bone cleaveth to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth.

⁵ My wounds stink and are corrupt, because of my foolishness.

⁵ Why will ye be still stricken, that ye revolt more and more? the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. ⁶ From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; [but] wounds, and bruises, and festering sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with oil.

²⁷ And Abraham answered and said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord, which am but dust and ashes:

⁸ And he took him a potsherd to scrape himself withal; and he sat among the ashes.

³¹ Yet wilt thou plunge me in the ditch, and mine own clothes shall abhor me.

¹ For the Chief Musician; set to Shoshannim. [A Psalm] of David. Save me, O God; for the waters are come in unto my soul. ² I sink in deep mire, where there is no standing: I am come into deep waters, where the floods overflow me.

¹⁴ Deliver me out of the mire, and let me not sink: let me be delivered from them that hate me, and out of the deep waters.

⁶ Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchijah the king’s son, that was in the court of the guard: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire: and Jeremiah sank in the mire.

⁷ Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard: I cry for help, but there is no judgment.

⁹ Will God hear his cry, when trouble cometh upon him?

⁴ O LORD God of hosts, how long wilt thou be angry against the prayer of thy people? ⁵ Thou hast fed them with the bread of tears, and given them tears to drink in large measure.

⁸ Yea, when I cry and call for help, he shutteth out my prayer.

⁴⁴ Thou hast covered thyself with a cloud, that [our] prayer should not pass through.

²³ But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying, Send her away; for she crieth after us.

⁹ Even that it would please God to crush me; that he would let loose his hand, and cut me off!

²⁰ If I have sinned, what do I unto thee, O thou watcher of men? why hast thou set me as a mark for thee, so that I am a burden to myself? ²¹ And why dost thou not pardon my transgression, and take away mine iniquity? for now shall I lie down in the dust; and thou shall seek me diligently, but I shall not be.

³ Is it good unto thee that thou shouldest oppress, that thou shouldest despise the work of thine hands, and shine upon the counsel of the wicked?

¹⁴ If I sin, then thou markest me, and thou wilt not acquit me from mine iniquity. ¹⁵ If I be wicked, woe unto me; and if I be righteous, yet shall I not lift up my head; being filled with ignominy and looking upon mine affliction. ¹⁶ And if [my head] exalt itself, thou huntest me as a lion: and again thou shewest thyself marvelous upon me. ¹⁷ Thou renewest thy witnesses against me, and increasest thine indignation upon me; changes and warfare are with me.

²⁵ Wilt thou harass a driven leaf? and wilt thou pursue the dry stubble? ²⁶ For thou writest bitter things against me, and makest me to inherit the iniquities of my youth: ²⁷ Thou puttest my feet also in the stocks, and markest all my paths; thou drawest thee a line about the soles of my feet: ²⁸ Though I am like a rotten thing that consumeth, like a garment that is moth-eaten.

⁹ He hath torn me in his wrath, and persecuted me; he hath gnashed upon me with his teeth: mine adversary sharpeneth his eyes upon me. ¹⁰ They have gaped upon me with their mouth; they have smitten me upon the cheek reproachfully: they gather themselves together against me. ¹¹ God delivereth me to the ungodly, and casteth me into the hands of the wicked. ¹² I was at ease, and he brake me asunder; yea, he hath taken me by the neck, and dashed me to pieces: he hath also set me up for his mark. ¹³ His archers compass me round about, he cleaveth my reins asunder, and doth not spare; he poureth out my gall upon the ground. ¹⁴ He breaketh me with breach upon breach; he runneth upon me like a giant.

⁶ Know now that God hath subverted me [in my cause], and hath compassed me with his net. ⁷ Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard: I cry for help, but there is no judgment. ⁸ He hath fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and hath set darkness in my paths. ⁹ He hath stripped me of my glory, and taken the crown from my head.

²² Why do ye persecute me as God, and are not satisfied with my flesh?

⁶ Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power? Nay; but he would give heed unto me.

⁷ Will the Lord cast off for ever? and will he be favourable no more? ⁸ Is his mercy clean gone for ever? doth his promise fail for evermore? ⁹ Hath God forgotten to be gracious? hath he in anger shut up his tender mercies? Selah

¹³ Thou hast a mighty arm: strong is thy hand, and high is thy right hand.

¹⁴ All thy lovers have forgotten thee; they seek thee not: for I have wounded thee with the wound of an enemy, with the chastisement of a cruel one; for the greatness of thine iniquity, because thy sins were increased.

⁶ Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time;

¹⁷ For he breaketh me with a tempest, and multiplieth my wounds without cause.

¹⁸ That they are as stubble before the wind, and as chaff that the storm carrieth away?

²¹ The east wind carrieth him away, and he departeth; and it sweepeth him out of his place.

⁴ The wicked are not so; but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.

¹⁰ And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly, yea, he flew swiftly upon the wings of the wind.

³ Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters; who maketh the clouds his chariot; who walketh upon the wings of the wind:

¹³ The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters: but he shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like the whirling dust before the storm.

¹¹ At that time shall it be said to this people and to Jerusalem, A hot wind from the bare heights in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to fan, nor to cleanse; ¹² a full wind from these shall come for me: now will I also utter judgments against them.

² A third part shalt thou burn in the fire in the midst of the city, when the days of the siege are fulfilled; and thou shalt take a third part, and smite with the sword round about it; and a third part thou shalt scatter to the wind, and I will draw out a sword after them.

¹⁹ The wind hath wrapped her up in its wings; and they shall be ashamed because of their sacrifices.

¹⁹ in the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

¹⁴ For we must needs die, and are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither doth God take away life, but deviseth means, that he that is banished be not an outcast from him.

¹⁹ The small and great are there; and the servant is free from his master.

²² It is all one; therefore I say, He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.

⁸ Thine hands have framed me and fashioned me together round about; yet thou dost destroy me.

⁵ Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months is with thee, and thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

³³ The clods of the valley shall be sweet unto him, and all men shall draw after him, as there were innumerable before him.

⁸ There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power over the day of death; and there is no discharge in [that] war: neither shall wickedness deliver him that is given to it.

⁵ For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

⁵ yea, they shall be afraid of [that which is] high, and terrors [shall be] in the way; and the almond tree shall blossom, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and the caper-berry shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets: ⁶ or ever the silver cord be loosed, or the golden bowl be broken, or the pitcher be broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern; ⁷ and the dust return to the earth as it was, and the spirit return unto God who gave it.

²⁷ And inasmuch as it is appointed unto men once to die, and after this [cometh] judgment;

³¹ So let all thine enemies perish, [O LORD]: but let them that love him be as the sun when he goeth forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years.

²⁵ Let them not say in their heart, Aha, so would we have it: let them not say, We have swallowed him up.

⁴ They turn the needy out of the way: the poor of the earth hide themselves together.

¹⁶ If I have withheld the poor from [their] desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail; ¹⁷ Or have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof; ¹⁸ (Nay, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, and I have been her guide from my mother’s womb;) ¹⁹ If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or that the needy had no covering; ²⁰ If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep; ²¹ If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, because I saw my help in the gate:

¹ For the Chief Musician; set to the Sheminith. A Psalm of David. Help, LORD; for the godly man ceaseth; for the faithful fail from among the children of men.

¹³ But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I afflicted my soul with fasting; and my prayer returned into mine own bosom. ¹⁴ I behaved myself as though it had been my friend or my brother: I bowed down mourning, as one that bewaileth his mother.

²¹ He that despiseth his neighbour sinneth: but he that hath pity on the poor, happy is he.

³¹ He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker: but he that hath mercy on the needy honoureth him.

⁵ Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: [and] he that is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.

¹⁷ He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD, and his good deed will he pay him again.

⁸ He that augmenteth his substance by usury and increase, gathereth it for him that hath pity on the poor.

⁷ Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh? ⁸ Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thy healing shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rearward.

¹⁷ But if ye will not hear it, my soul shall weep in secret for [your] pride; and mine eye shall weep sore, and run down with tears, because the LORD’S flock is taken captive.

²⁰ Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember how I stood before thee to speak good for them, to turn away thy fury from them.

²⁷ Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor; if there may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity.

⁴¹ And when he drew nigh, he saw the city and wept over it,

³⁵ Jesus wept.

¹⁵ Rejoice with them that rejoice; weep with them that weep.

⁹ as it is written, He hath scattered abroad, he hath given to the poor; His righteousness abideth for ever.

²⁵ For the thing which I fear cometh upon me, and that which I am afraid of cometh unto me. ²⁶ I am not at ease, neither am I quiet, neither have I rest; but trouble cometh.

⁶ The light shall be dark in his tent, and his lamp above him shall be put out.

¹⁸ He shall be driven from light into darkness, and chased out of the world.

⁸ He hath fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and hath set darkness in my paths.

¹⁷ Because I was not cut off before the darkness, neither did he cover the thick darkness from my face.

¹⁸ Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand:

¹¹ Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.

¹⁰ Who is among you that feareth the LORD, that obeyeth the voice of his servant? he that walketh in darkness, and hath no light, let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God.

¹⁵ We looked for peace, but no good came; [and] for a time of healing, and behold dismay!

¹⁹ Hast thou utterly rejected Judah? hath thy soul loathed Zion? why hast thou smitten us, and there is no healing for us? We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of healing, and behold dismay!

¹⁸ Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound incurable, which refuseth to be healed? wilt thou indeed be unto me as a deceitful [brook], as waters that fail?

¹² For the inhabitant of Maroth waiteth anxiously for good: because evil is come down from the LORD unto the gate of Jerusalem.

⁴ Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst deliver them.

¹⁹ My bowels, my bowels! I am pained at my very heart; my heart is disquieted in me; I cannot hold my peace; because thou hast heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.

²⁰ Is Ephraim my dear son? is he a pleasant child? for as often as I speak against him, I do earnestly remember him still: therefore my bowels are troubled for him; I will surely have mercy upon him, saith the LORD.

²⁰ Behold, O LORD; for I am in distress; my bowels are troubled; mine heart is turned within me; for I have grievously rebelled: abroad the sword bereaveth, at home there is as death.

¹¹ Mine eyes do fail with tears, my bowels are troubled, my liver is poured upon the earth, for the destruction of the daughter of my people; because the young children and the sucklings swoon in the streets of the city.

⁶ I am pained and bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long.

⁹ I will say unto God my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

² For thou art the God of my strength; why hast thou cast me off? why go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?

³ He was despised, and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and as one from whom men hide their face he was despised, and we esteemed him not. ⁴ Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

¹ I AM the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath. ² He hath led me and caused me to walk in darkness and not in light. ³ Surely against me he turneth his hand again and again all the day.

¹⁴ If I have said to corruption, Thou art my father; to the worm, [Thou art] my mother, and my sister;

¹⁹ That thou hast sore broken us in the place of jackals, and covered us with the shadow of death.

⁶ I am like a pelican of the wilderness; I am become as an owl of the waste places.

²¹ But wild beasts of the desert shall lie there; and their houses shall be full of doleful creatures; and ostriches shall dwell there, and satyrs shall dance there. ²² And wolves shall cry in their castles, and jackals in the pleasant palaces: and her time is near to come, and her days shall not be prolonged.

¹⁴ Like a swallow [or] a crane, so did I chatter; I did mourn as a dove: mine eyes fail [with looking] upward; O LORD, I am oppressed, be thou my surety.

⁸ For this will I wail and howl, I will go stripped and naked: I will make a wailing like the jackals, and a mourning like the ostriches.

³ but Esau I hated, and made his mountains a desolation, and [gave] his heritage to the jackals of the wilderness.

³ For my days consume away like smoke, and my bones are burned as a firebrand.

⁸³ For I am become like a bottle in the smoke; yet do I not forget thy statutes.

⁴ My flesh and my skin hath he made old; he hath broken my bones.

⁸ Their visage is blacker than a coal; they are not known in the streets: their skin cleaveth to their bones; it is withered, it is become like a stick.

¹⁰ Our skin is black like an oven because of the burning heat of famine.

¹ By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion. ² Upon the willows in the midst thereof we hanged up our harps. ³ For there they that led us captive required of us songs, and they that wasted us [required of us] mirth, [saying], Sing us one of the songs of Zion. ⁴ How shall we sing the LORD’S song in a strange land?

⁴ a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

⁴ My heart panteth, horror hath affrighted me: the twilight that I desired hath been turned into trembling unto me.

¹² And in that day did the Lord, the LORD of hosts, call to weeping, and to mourning, and to baldness, and to girding with sackcloth:

⁷ The new wine mourneth, the vine languisheth, all the merryhearted do sigh. ⁸ The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth. ⁹ They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it.

¹⁵ The joy of our heart is ceased; our dance is turned into mourning.

¹⁸ Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting: neither were instruments of music brought before him: and his sleep fled from him.
