¹ ¶ And it came to pass that on one of those days as he taught the people in the temple and preached the gospel, the princes of the priests and the scribes came upon him with the elders

¹ ¶ The sons of Aaron also had their courses. The sons of Aaron: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. ² But Nadab and Abihu died before their father and had no children; therefore, Eleazar and Ithamar had the priesthood. ³ And David distributed them, Zadok being of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, according to their turns in their ministry. ⁴ And there were more men found of the sons of Eleazar than of the sons of Ithamar, and thus were they divided. Among the sons of Eleazar, there were sixteen chief men of the houses of their fathers and eight among the sons of Ithamar according to the houses of their fathers. ⁵ They divided them, therefore, by lot, one with another for of the sons of Eleazar and of the sons of Ithamar there were princes of the sanctuary and princes of God. ⁶ And Shemaiah, the scribe, the son of Nethaneel, one of the Levites, wrote them before the king and the princes and before Zadok, the priest, and Ahimelech, the son of Abiathar, and the heads of the fathers of the priests and Levites; one paternal house being taken for Eleazar, and one taken for Ithamar. ⁷ Now the first lot came forth to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedaiah, ⁸ the third to Harim, the fourth to Seorim, ⁹ the fifth to Malchijah, the sixth to Mijamin, ¹⁰ the seventh to Hakkoz, the eighth to Abijah, ¹¹ the ninth to Jeshua, the tenth to Shecaniah, ¹² the eleventh to Eliashib, the twelfth to Jakim, ¹³ the thirteenth to Huppah, the fourteenth to Jeshebeab, ¹⁴ the fifteenth to Bilgah, the sixteenth to Immer, ¹⁵ the seventeenth to Hezir, the eighteenth to Aphses, ¹⁶ the nineteenth to Pethahiah, the twentieth to Jehezekel, ¹⁷ the twenty-first to Jachin, the twenty-second to Gamul, ¹⁸ the twenty-third to Delaiah, the twenty-fourth to Maaziah. ¹⁹ These were their orderings in their service to come into the house of the LORD, according to their right, in the ministry of Aaron, their father, as the LORD God of Israel had commanded him. ²⁰ ¶ And of the sons of Levi that remained: Of the sons of Amram, Shubael; of the sons of Shubael, Jehdeiah. ²¹ Rehabiah; of the sons of Rehabiah, the chief was Isshiah. ²² Of the Izharite; Shelomoth; and the son of Shelomoth, Jahath. ²³ And of the sons of Jeriah: Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, Jekameam the fourth. ²⁴ The sons of Uzziel: Michah; and the son of Michah, Shamir. ²⁵ The brother of Michah was Isshiah; and the son of Isshiah, Zechariah. ²⁶ The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi; the son of Jaaziah, Beno. ²⁷ The sons of Merari by Jaaziah: Beno, Shoham, Zaccur, and Ibri. ²⁸ Of Mahli came Eleazar, who had no sons. ²⁹ Kish; the son of Kish, Jerahmeel. ³⁰ The sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder, and Jerimoth. These were the sons of the Levites according to the houses of their fathers. ³¹ These, likewise, cast lots over against their brethren, the sons of Aaron, in the presence of David, the king, and Zadok, and Ahimelech, and the chief of the fathers of the priests and Levites, even the principal fathers over against their younger brethren.

²³ ¶ And when he was come into the temple, the princes of the priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority? ²⁴ And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you a word, which if ye tell me, I will also tell you by what authority I do these things. ²⁵ The baptism of John, where was it from? from heaven or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven, he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him? ²⁶ But if we shall say, Of men, we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet. ²⁷ And they answered Jesus and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

⁵⁵ In that same hour Jesus said to the multitude, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves to take me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on me.

²⁷ ¶ And they returned to Jerusalem, and as he was walking in the temple, the princes of the priests and the scribes and the elders came ²⁸ and said unto him, By what faculty doest thou these things? and who gave thee this faculty to do these things? ²⁹ Then Jesus, answering, said unto them, I will also ask of you one word, and respond unto me, and I will tell you with what faculty I do these things. ³⁰ The baptism of John, was it of heaven or of men? Respond unto me. ³¹ Then they thought inside themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven, he will say, Why then did ye not believe him? ³² But if we shall say, Of men, we fear the people, for everyone judged regarding John that he truly was a prophet. ³³ And answering, they said unto Jesus, We do not know. And Jesus, answering, said unto them, Neither shall I tell you with what faculty I do these things.

¹ ¶ And it came to pass afterward that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and announcing the gospel of the kingdom of God, and the twelve with him,

⁴⁷ And he taught daily in the temple. But the princes of the priests and the scribes and the principals of the people sought to kill him ⁴⁸ and could not find what they might do, for all the people were very attentive to hear him.

²⁰ Jesus answered him, I spoke openly to the world; I always taught in the synagogue and in the temple, where all the Jews gather; and I have said nothing in secret.

¹ ¶ And as they spoke unto the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them,

¹² And they stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes and came upon him and caught him and brought him to the council
