¹ ¶ And Job replied and said, ² How long will ye anguish my soul and break me in pieces with words? ³ These ten times ye have reproached me; are ye not ashamed to make yourselves strange to me? ⁴ And if indeed I have erred, my error shall remain with me. ⁵ If indeed ye will magnify yourselves against me and reprove me of my reproach, ⁶ know now that God has overthrown me and has compassed me with his net. ⁷ Behold, I shall cry out that I have been wronged, and I shall not be heard; I shall cry aloud, and there shall be no judgment. ⁸ ¶ He has walled off my way and I shall not pass, and he has set darkness in my paths. ⁹ He has stripped me of my glory and taken the crown from my head. ¹⁰ He has pulled me up on every side, and I am dried up; he has caused my hope to pass like an uprooted tree. ¹¹ He has kindled his wrath against me, and he counted me unto him as one of his enemies. ¹² His troops came together and raised up their way over me and encamp round about my tent. ¹³ He has put my brethren far from me, and my acquaintances are verily estranged from me. ¹⁴ My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me. ¹⁵ Those that dwell in my house and my maids have counted me for a stranger; I was an alien in their sight. ¹⁶ I called my slave, and he gave me no answer; I intreated him with my mouth. ¹⁷ My spirit came to be strange to my wife, although I intreated her for the sons of my own body. ¹⁸ Even the young children despised me; as I arose, they spoke against me. ¹⁹ All my intimate friends abhorred me; and those whom I loved are turned against me. ²⁰ My bones cleave to my skin and to my flesh, and I am escaped with the skin of my teeth. ²¹ Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; for the hand of God has touched me. ²² Why do ye persecute me as God and are not satisfied with my flesh? ²³ ¶ Oh, that my words were now written! Oh, that they were printed in a book! ²⁴ That they were graven with an iron pen and lead in the rock for ever! ²⁵ For I know that my redeemer lives and that he shall rise at the latter day over the dust; ²⁶ and afterward from this, my stricken skin and from my own flesh, I must see God: ²⁷ whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another, though my kidneys be consumed within me. ²⁸ But ye should say, Why should we persecute him, seeing that the root of the matter is found in me? ²⁹ Be ye afraid of the sword; for the wrath of the sword comes because of the iniquities, that ye may know there is a judgment.

¹⁶ And it came to pass that, pressing and grinding him daily with her words, his soul was reduced unto mortal anguish.

² How long wilt thou speak such things and how long shall the words of thy mouth be like a strong wind?

² How long will it be ere ye make an end of words? Understand, and afterwards we will speak.

² As God lives, who has taken away my rights; and the Almighty, who has made my soul bitter,

² Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am weak; O LORD, heal me, for my bones are troubled. ³ My soul is also greatly troubled; but thou, O LORD, how long?

¹ To the Overcomer,
A Psalm of David. ¶ How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?

¹⁰ It is as death in my bones when my enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God?

²¹ The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords.

⁷ Behold, they belch out with their mouth; swords are in their lips; for who, say they, doth hear?

³ Who whet their tongue like a sword and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words

¹⁸ ¶ There are those that speak like the piercings of a sword, but the tongue of the wise is medicine.

²¹ ¶ Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those that love it shall eat its fruit.

⁶ And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defiles the whole body and sets on fire the course of our nature; and it is set on fire of hell. ⁷ For every nature of beasts and of birds and of serpents and of beings in the sea may be tamed and is tamed by mankind, ⁸ but no man can tame the tongue, which is an evil that cannot be restrained and is full of deadly poison.

⁷ ¶ and delivered just Lot, who was persecuted by those abominable people because of their nefarious conversation; ⁸ (for that righteous man dwelling among them, in seeing and hearing, afflicted his righteous soul from day to day with the deeds of those unjust people);

¹⁰ And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on those that dwell in the earth?

⁷ And your father has deceived me and changed my wages ten times, but God did not allow him to hurt me.

⁷ ¶ And when Joseph saw his brethren, he knew them, but made himself strange unto them and spoke roughly unto them; and he said unto them, Where have you come from? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.

²⁶ When I have broken the staff of your bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall deliver you your bread again by weight, and ye shall eat and not be satisfied.

²² Because all those men who saw my glory and my signs which I have done in Egypt and in the wilderness and have tempted me now these ten times and have not hearkened to my voice,

¹² But it came to pass, that when the Jews who dwelt among them came, they advised us ten times of all the places from which they would come upon us.

⁶ Is not this thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the integrity of thy ways? ⁷ ¶ Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? Or where were the righteous cut off? ⁸ Even as I have seen, those that plow iniquity and sow wickedness, reap the same. ⁹ By the breath of God they perish, and by the spirit of his anger they are consumed. ¹⁰ The roaring of the lion and the voice of the fierce lion and the teeth of the young lions, are broken. ¹¹ The old lion perishes for lack of prey, and the stout lion’s whelps are scattered abroad.

³ I have seen the foolish taking root, but at the same time I cursed his habitation. ⁴ His sons are far from saving health, and they shall be crushed in the gate, and there shall be no one to deliver them.

⁴ Because thy sons sinned against him, he cast them away in the place of their rebellion; ⁵ if thou would seek God early and make thy supplication to the Almighty, ⁶ if thou wert pure and upright, surely now he would awake upon thee and make the habitation of thy righteousness prosperous.

³ Should thy lies make men be silent? Shalt thou mock, and shall no man make thee ashamed?

¹⁴ if there is any iniquity in thy hand and thou dost put it far away and dost not consent that wickedness dwell in thy habitations,

⁴ Thou dost also cast off fear and undermine prayer before God. ⁵ For thy mouth has declared thine iniquity, and thou hast chosen the tongue of the crafty. ⁶ Thine own mouth shall condemn thee, and not I; thine own lips shall testify against thee.

¹¹ Are the consolations of God in such small esteem with thee? Is there by chance any secret thing concerning thee? ¹² Why does thine heart carry thee away, and why do thine eyes blink,

⁴ O thou that dost tear thy soul in thine anger; shall the earth be forsaken because of thee and shall the rocks be removed out of their place? ⁵ ¶ The light of the wicked shall certainly be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine. ⁶ The light shall be dark in his tabernacle, and his lamp shall be put out with him. ⁷ The steps of his strength shall be cut down, and his own counsel shall cast him down. ⁸ For a net shall be cast at his feet, and he shall walk upon a network. ⁹ The snare shall take him by the heel, and the robber shall prevail against him. ¹⁰ The cord is hidden in the ground and a trap for him in the way. ¹¹ ¶ Terrors shall make him afraid on every side, and his own feet shall drive him away. ¹² His strength shall be hungerbitten, and destruction shall be ready at his side. ¹³ They shall devour the protection of his skin; the firstborn of death shall devour his members. ¹⁴ His confidence shall be rooted out of his tent, and he shall be brought to the king of terrors. ¹⁵ He shall dwell in his tent, as if it were not his; brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation. ¹⁶ His roots shall be dried up beneath, and above his branch shall be cut off. ¹⁷ His memory shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the streets. ¹⁸ He shall be driven from the light into the darkness and chased out of the world. ¹⁹ He shall have neither son nor grandson among his people, nor any to succeed him in his dwellings. ²⁰ Those that come after him shall be dismayed at his day, as those that went before were overcome with fear. ²¹ Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him that does not know God.

¹⁷ My spirit came to be strange to my wife, although I intreated her for the sons of my own body.

⁸ I am become a stranger unto my brethren and an alien unto my mother’s sons.

²⁰ And in all matters of wisdom and intelligence, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.

¹⁷ And David spoke unto the LORD when he saw the angel that smote the people and said, I have sinned, I committed the iniquity, but these sheep, what have they done? Let thy hand, I pray thee, be against me and against my father’s house.

³ Should thy lies make men be silent? Shalt thou mock, and shall no man make thee ashamed? ⁴ For thou hast said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean before thine eyes. ⁵ But oh, that God would speak and open his lips against thee ⁶ and that he would show thee the secrets of wisdom! For thou dost deserve double according to sound wisdom; and thou dost know that God has forgotten thee because of thine iniquity.

¹² If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself; but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.

⁴ Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine; the soul that sins, it shall die.

¹⁰ For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ that each one may receive according to that which they have done in the body, good or evil.

⁵ For everyone shall bear his own burden.

⁶ And her rival provoked her to anger and sorrow because the LORD had shut up her womb.

³ And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach, and the wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates are burned with fire.

²⁶ Let them be ashamed and brought to confusion together that rejoice at my hurt; let them be clothed with shame and dishonour that magnify themselves against me.

¹⁶ For I said, Let them not rejoice over me; let them not magnify themselves against me when my foot slips.

¹¹ In this I shall know that I have pleased thee, that my enemy does not triumph over me.

¹² For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it, neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him:

¹ ¶ And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread and wear our own apparel; only let us be called by thy name to take away our reproach.

⁸ Do not rejoice against me, O my enemy; for if I have fallen, I shall arise; if I sit in darkness, the LORD is my light.

¹⁰ This shall come upon them for their pride because they have reproached and magnified themselves against the people of the LORD of the hosts.

⁷ And the LORD shall keep the tents of Judah as in the beginning, so that the glory of the house of David and of the inhabitants of Jerusalem shall not cause those of Judah to magnify themselves.

²⁵ Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.

² And Jesus, answering, said unto them, Think ye that these Galilaeans suffered such things because they were greater sinners than all the other Galilaeans? ³ I tell you, No; but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. ⁴ Or those eighteen upon whom the tower in Siloam fell and slew them, think ye that they were greater debtors than all the other men that dwelt in Jerusalem?

² And his disciples asked him, saying, Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?

³⁴ They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.

²⁰ If I have sinned, what shall I do unto thee, O thou preserver of men? Why hast thou set me as a mark against thee, so that I am a burden to myself?

¹¹ God has delivered me unto the liar, and in the hands of the wicked he has caused me to tremble. ¹² I was prosperous, but he has broken me asunder; he has taken me by my neck and shaken me to pieces and set me up for his mark. ¹³ His archers compassed me round about; he cleaved my kidneys asunder and did not spare; he poured out my gall upon the ground. ¹⁴ He broke me with breach upon breach; he ran upon me like a giant.

⁸ For a net shall be cast at his feet, and he shall walk upon a network. ⁹ The snare shall take him by the heel, and the robber shall prevail against him. ¹⁰ The cord is hidden in the ground and a trap for him in the way.

⁹ ¶ But thou hast cast us off and put us to shame and doth not go forth with our armies. ¹⁰ Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy, and we are spoiled by those who hate us. ¹¹ Thou hast given us over like sheep appointed for food and hast scattered us among the Gentiles. ¹² Thou hast sold thy people for nothing and dost not increase thy wealth by their price. ¹³ Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to those that are round about us. ¹⁴ Thou makest us a byword among the Gentiles, a shaking of the head among the people.

¹⁰ For thou, O God, hast proved us; thou hast refined us as silver is refined. ¹¹ Thou didst bring us into the net; thou didst lay affliction upon our loins. ¹² Thou hast placed a man over our head; we went through fire and through water, but thou didst bring us out into abundance.

¹² ¶ Lamed Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? behold, and see if there is any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is come unto me because the LORD has afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger. ¹³ Mem From upon high he has sent fire into my bones, and it prevails against them; he has spread a net for my feet; he has turned me back; he has made me desolate and always with pain.

¹³ But I will spread my net upon him, and he shall be taken in my snare, and I will cause him to be taken to Babylon to the land of the Chaldeans; yet he shall not see it though he shall die there.

³ Thus hath the Lord GOD said: I will therefore spread out my net over thee with a company of many peoples, and they shall bring thee up in my net.

¹² When they shall go, I will spread my net upon them; I will bring them down as the fowls of the heaven; I will chastise them according to what has been heard in their congregations.

²⁴ The earth is given into the hand of the wicked; he covers the faces of its judges; if it is not he who does this then, who is it and where is he?

³² For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together unto judgment.

³ Is it good unto thee that thou should oppress, that thou should reject the work of thine hands and shine upon the counsel of the wicked?

¹⁵ If I am wicked, woe unto me; and if I am righteous, I will not lift up my head, being full of dishonour and of seeing my affliction. ¹⁶ And thou dost increase. Thou dost hunt me as a fierce lion; turning and doing marvels in me. ¹⁷ Thou dost renew thy plagues against me and increase thine indignation upon me, bringing up armies against me.

¹⁵ Though he slay me, yet I will trust in him; but I will defend my ways before him. ¹⁶ He also shall be my saving health; for the hypocrite shall not enter into his presence. ¹⁷ Hear diligently my reason and my declaration with your ears. ¹⁸ Behold now, if I draw near unto the judgment; I know that I shall be justified. ¹⁹ Who is he that will contend with me? For now, if I remain silent, I shall die. ²⁰ At the least, grant me these two things; then I will not hide myself from thee: ²¹ withdraw thy hand from me; and let not thy dread make me afraid. ²² Then call, and I will answer; or let me speak, and answer thou me. ²³ ¶ How many are my iniquities and sins? Make me to know my transgression and my sin.

¹⁷ ¶ even though there is no injustice in my hands, and my prayer has been pure. ¹⁸ O earth, do not cover my blood; and let there be no place where my cry is hidden. ¹⁹ Certainly my witness is even now in the heavens, and my record is on high.

²¹ O that a man might dispute with God, as he can with his neighbour!

²⁷ ¶ Behold, I know your thoughts and the imaginations which ye devise against me.

³ Oh, that I knew where I might find him! That I might come even to his seat! ⁴ I would order judgment before him and fill my mouth with arguments. ⁵ I would know the words which he would answer me and understand what he would say unto me. ⁶ Will he plead against me with his great power? No, but rather he would put it in me. ⁷ There the righteous might dispute with him; and should I escape for ever from the one who condemns me.

²⁰ I cry unto thee, and thou dost not hear me; I present myself, and thou regardest me not.

³⁵ Oh that someone would hear me! Behold, my mark is, that the Almighty will testify for me, even though my adversary had written down the charges. ³⁶ Surely I would take it upon my shoulder and bind it as a crown to me.

⁵ For Job has said, I am righteous; and God has taken away my right.

⁸ Wilt thou disannul my judgment? Wilt thou condemn me, that thou may be justified?

² O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.

⁸ For since I spoke out, I raised my voice crying, Violence and destruction; because the word of the LORD has been a reproach unto me and a derision, daily.

⁸ Gimel Even when I cried and shouted, he shut out my prayer.

² O LORD, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear; and raise my voice unto thee because of the violence, and thou wilt not save? ³ Why dost thou cause me to see iniquity and cause me to behold grievance and destruction and violence before me, in addition to those that raise up strife and contention?

⁷ And when they cried unto the LORD, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians and brought the sea upon them and covered them; and your eyes have seen what I have done in Egypt; and ye dwelt in the wilderness a long season.

²³ to the man who does not know which way he goes and whom God has hedged in?

²⁶ When I expected good, then evil came unto me; and when I waited for light, there came darkness.

⁸ Thou hast put away mine acquaintances far from me; thou hast made me an abomination unto them; I am shut up, and I cannot come forth.

¹⁹ The way of the wicked is as darkness; they do not know in what they stumble.

¹⁰ ¶ Who is among you that fears the LORD? Hearken unto the voice of his slave. He who walked in darkness and had no light; let him trust in the name of the LORD and stay upon his God.

¹⁶ Give glory to the LORD your God before he causes darkness and before your feet stumble in mountains of darkness, and while ye look for light, he turns it into the shadow of death and makes it gross darkness.

¹² Therefore their way shall be unto them as slippery ways in the darkness; they shall be driven on and fall therein; for I will bring evil upon them, even the year of their visitation, saith the LORD.

⁷ Gimel He has hedged me about that I cannot get out; he has made my chain heavy.

⁹ Gimel He has enclosed my ways with hewn stone; he has made my paths crooked.

⁶ ¶ Therefore, behold, I will hedge up thy way with thorns and make a wall that she shall not find her paths.

¹² ¶ Then Jesus spoke again unto them, saying, I AM the light of the world; he that follows me shall not walk in darkness but shall have the light of life.

¹⁷ He causes the counsellors to walk away stripped of counsel and makes the judges to be fools.

⁷ ¶ When I went out to the gate to judgment, when I had my seat prepared in the plaza! ⁸ The young men would see me and hide themselves, and the aged would arise and stand. ⁹ The princes would refrain from talking and lay their hand on their mouth; ¹⁰ the voice of the principals would not be noticed, and their tongue would cleave to the roof of their mouth. ¹¹ When the ears that heard me, called me blessed; and when the eyes that saw me, gave witness to me: ¹² because I delivered the poor that cried and the fatherless who had no one to help him. ¹³ The blessing of the one that was ready to perish came upon me; and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me as a robe; and my diadem was judgment.

²⁰ My glory is renewed with me, and my bow is renewed in my hand. ²¹ They would hear me and wait, and keep silent at my counsel.

¹ ¶ But now those that are younger than I have me in derision, whose fathers I would have disdained to have set with the dogs of my flock.

¹⁶ Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased; ¹⁷ for in his death he shall carry nothing away; nor shall his glory descend after him.

³⁹ Thou hast made void the covenant of thy slave; thou hast profaned his crown by casting it to the ground.

⁴⁴ Thou hast made his clarity to cease and cast his throne down to the ground.

⁶ But ye shall be named the Priests of the LORD; men shall call you the Ministers of our God; ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and with their glory ye shall be lifted up.

¹⁶ The crown is fallen from our head; woe now unto us, for we have sinned!

¹¹ ¶ As for Ephraim, their glory shall fly away like a bird, from the birth even from the womb and from the conception.

¹³ ¶ And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their brother, the firstborn; ¹⁴ and a messenger came unto Job and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them; ¹⁵ and the Sabeans {Heb. those of Sheba} fell upon them and took them away; they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell thee. ¹⁶ While he was yet speaking, another came who said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven and has burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell thee. ¹⁷ While he was yet speaking, another came and said, The Chaldeans made three bands and fell upon the camels and have carried them away and have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell thee. ¹⁸ While he was yet speaking, there another came and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their brother, the firstborn; ¹⁹ and, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell thee.

⁷ ¶ So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto the crown of his head.

¹¹ What is my strength that I should hope? What is my end that I should prolong my life?

⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle and are spent without hope.

¹³ So are the paths of all that forget God, and the hypocrite’s hope shall perish. ¹⁴ For his hope shall be cut off, and his trust is a spider’s web. ¹⁵ He shall lean upon his house, but it shall not stand; he shall hold it fast, but it shall not endure. ¹⁶ Like a tree, he is green before the sun, and his branches go forth over his garden; ¹⁷ his roots weave themselves around a spring and secure themselves even in a stony place. ¹⁸ If he is uprooted from his place, then it shall deny him, saying, I have not seen thee.

¹⁴ Behold, he shall break down, and it shall not be built again; he shall shut up a man, and no one shall be able to open unto him.

¹¹ My days are past, my thoughts were broken off, even the purposes of my heart.

¹⁵ And where shall my hope be now? As for my hope, who shall see it?

²⁰ The Merciful One shall forget them; the worm shall feed sweetly on them; they shall never be remembered again; and iniquity shall be broken as a tree.

³⁵ Resh I have seen the wicked in great power and spreading himself like a green bay tree. ³⁶ Yet he passed away, and, behold, he was not: I sought him, but he could not be found.

¹³ But unto thee have I cried, O LORD; and in the morning shall my prayer come before thee. ¹⁴ LORD, why dost thou cast off my soul? why dost thou hide thy face from me? ¹⁵ I am afflicted and destitute; from my youth up I have feared thee and been in awe of thee. ¹⁶ Thy fierce wrath goes over me; thy terrors have cut me off. ¹⁷ They came round about me daily like water; they compassed me about together. ¹⁸ Thou hast put lover and friend far from me, and placed my acquaintances into darkness.

¹¹ My days are like a shadow that declines, and I am withered like grass.

⁵ He The Lord was as an enemy, he has destroyed Israel; he has destroyed all her palaces; he has dissipated his strong holds and has multiplied in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation. ⁶ Vau And he has violently taken away his tabernacle as if it were of a garden; he has destroyed his congregation; the LORD has caused the solemnities and sabbaths to be forgotten in Zion and has rejected in the indignation of his anger the king and the priest.

⁸ ¶ We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are unsure of our lives, but not in despair; ⁹ persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;

²² For fire shall be kindled in my anger and shall burn unto the lowest part of Sheol and shall consume the earth with her fruit and burn up the foundations of the mountains.

²⁴ Why dost thou hide thy face, and hold me for thine enemy?

⁹ His wrath has torn me and has been against me; he gnashed upon me with his teeth; my enemy sharpened his eyes upon me.

¹⁰ Behold, God sought occasions against me, he counts me for his enemy,

⁴⁶ How long, O LORD? wilt thou hide thyself for ever? shall thy wrath burn like fire?

⁷ ¶ For we are consumed by thine anger, and by thy wrath we are troubled.

⁵ He The Lord was as an enemy, he has destroyed Israel; he has destroyed all her palaces; he has dissipated his strong holds and has multiplied in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation.

¹² Upon my right hand rise the youth; they push away my feet, and they raise up against me the ways of their destruction.

⁵ ¶ O Assyrian, rod and staff of my anger, in thy hand have I placed my indignation. ⁶ I will send him against a hypocritical nation, and upon the people of my wrath will I send him to take spoil and to take prey and to ready them that they might be tread down like the mire of the streets.

²³ But I will put it into the hand of those that afflict thee, which have said to thy soul, Bow down, that we may go over: and thou hast laid thy body as the ground and as the street to those that went over.

²¹ Now ye are certainly as they; ye have seen the torment and are afraid. ²² ¶ Did I say, Bring unto me and pay for me out of your substance ²³ and deliver me from the enemy’s hand and ransom me from the hand of the mighty?

⁷ But now he has made me weary; thou hast made desolate all my company.

¹¹ I was a reproach among all my enemies, but especially among my neighbours, and a fear to my acquaintances: those that see me without flee from me.

¹¹ My friends and my companions stand aloof from my sore, and my kinsmen stand afar off.

²⁰ Reproach has broken my heart, and I am full of heaviness, and I looked for some to take pity, but there was no one, and for comforters, but I found none.

¹⁸ Thou hast put lover and friend far from me, and placed my acquaintances into darkness.

⁵⁶ But all this was done that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook him and fled.

¹⁶ ¶ At my first answer no one stood with me, but all men forsook me: let it not be imputed unto them.

²³ And the counselled of Ahithophel, which he counselled in those days, was as if a man had enquired at the word of God: so was all the counselled of Ahithophel both with David and with Absalom.

¹² For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it, neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him: ¹³ But it was thou, who in my estimation was, my lord, and of my own family. ¹⁴ We took sweet counsel together and walked unto the house of God in company.

²⁴ ¶ The man that has friends must show himself to be a friend, and there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother.

¹⁰ For I heard the murmuring of many, fear on every side, Report, and we will report it. All my friends watched to see if I would stumble. Peradventure he will deceive himself, they said, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall take our revenge on him.

⁵ Do not believe in a friend, do not trust in a prince; from her that lies at thy side, take care, open not thy mouth. ⁶ For the son dishonours the father, the daughter rises up against her mother, the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and a man’s enemies are those of his own house.

²¹ And brother shall deliver up brother unto death, and the father the child, and children shall rise up against their parents and cause them to be put to death.

¹⁸ ¶ I speak not of you all; I know whom I have chosen; but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me,

³¹ when the servants of my tent said, Oh that we had of his flesh! We would never be satisfied. ³² The stranger did not lodge in the street, but I opened my doors to the traveller.

³ Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us, for we are exceedingly weary of being held in contempt.

¹⁵ and the Sabeans {Heb. those of Sheba} fell upon them and took them away; they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell thee. ¹⁶ While he was yet speaking, another came who said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven and has burned up the sheep and the servants and consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell thee. ¹⁷ While he was yet speaking, another came and said, The Chaldeans made three bands and fell upon the camels and have carried them away and have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell thee.

¹⁹ and, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell thee.

⁹ Then his wife said unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? Blaspheme God and die. ¹⁰ But he said unto her, Thou hast spoken as any of the foolish women speak. What? Shall we receive good at the hand of God and shall we not receive evil? In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

¹ ¶ My breath is corrupt, my days are cut off, and the grave is ready for me.

²³ Then he went up from there unto Bethel, and as he was going up by the way, the young men {or servants} of the city came forth and mocked him, saying, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.

⁵ And the people shall do violence, one against another, and each one against his neighbour; the child shall rise up against the ancient and the base against the honourable.

¹⁴ ¶ He that is afflicted deserves mercy from his friend; but he has forsaken the fear of the Almighty. ¹⁵ My brethren have lied to me as a brook; they passed away as an impetuous stream,

⁹ Even the man of my peace, in whom I trusted, who ate of my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.

²⁰ He has put forth his hands against such as be at peace with him; he has defiled his covenant.

⁴ They have responded to my love by becoming my adversaries, but I give myself unto prayer. ⁵ And they have rewarded me evil for good, and hatred for my love.

⁴⁸ But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?

⁴ And Satan answered the LORD and said, Skin for skin, all that a man has he will give for his life. ⁵ But put forth thy hand now and touch his bone and his flesh, and thou shalt see if he does not blaspheme thee to thy face. ⁶ And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, he is in thy hand, but preserve his life.

⁵ My flesh is clothed with worms and clods of dust; my skin is broken and abominable.

³⁰ My skin is black upon me, and my bones are burned with heat.

¹⁹ ¶ He is chastened also upon his bed with strong pain in all his bones, ²⁰ so that his life abhors bread and his soul dainty food. ²¹ His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out. ²² His soul shall draw near to the grave, and his life to those that would bury him.

¹⁴ I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. ¹⁵ My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my tongue cleaves to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death. ¹⁶ For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. ¹⁷ I may count all my bones: they look and stare upon me.

³ When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long. ⁴ For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my green growth is turned into the drought of summer. Selah.

³ There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin.

³ For my days are consumed like smoke, and my bones are burned as in a hearth.

⁵ By reason of the voice of my groaning, my bones cleave to my skin.

⁴ Beth My flesh and my skin he has made old; he has broken my bones.

⁸ Cheth Their visage is blacker than a coal; they are not known in the streets; their skin cleaves to their bones; it is withered; it is dry like a stick.

¹⁰ Our skin became black like an oven because of the terrible famine.

¹¹ But put forth thy hand now and touch all that he has, and thou shalt see if he will not blaspheme thee to thy face.

⁵ But put forth thy hand now and touch his bone and his flesh, and thou shalt see if he does not blaspheme thee to thy face.

¹⁰ But he said unto her, Thou hast spoken as any of the foolish women speak. What? Shall we receive good at the hand of God and shall we not receive evil? In all this Job did not sin with his lips.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me; my spirit drinks of the poison; and terrors of God combat me.

¹⁴ ¶ He that is afflicted deserves mercy from his friend; but he has forsaken the fear of the Almighty.

² For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presses me sore.

¹⁵ Rejoice with those that rejoice and weep with those that weep.

²⁶ And if one member suffers, all the members suffer together; or if one member is honoured, all the members rejoice together.

³ Remember those that are in bonds as bound with them and those who suffer adversity as being yourselves also in the body.

¹⁶ And thou dost increase. Thou dost hunt me as a fierce lion; turning and doing marvels in me.

²⁵ Wilt thou break a leaf driven to and fro? Wilt thou pursue the dry stubble?

³¹ when the servants of my tent said, Oh that we had of his flesh! We would never be satisfied.

²⁶ For they persecute him whom thou hast smitten, and they boast that thou hast slain their enemies.

³ and eat the flesh of my people, and flay their skin from off them; and they break their bones and chop them in pieces as for the pot and as flesh within the caldron.

³⁵ Oh that someone would hear me! Behold, my mark is, that the Almighty will testify for me, even though my adversary had written down the charges.

¹ ¶ Moreover the LORD said unto me, Take a great roll and write in it with a man’s pen concerning Mahershalal-hashbaz. {Heb. Hurry to the spoil, make haste to the prey}

⁸ ¶ Now go, write this vision before them on a tablet and note it in a book that it may remain unto the last day, for ever, unto all ages.

¹¹ With the work of an engraver in stone, like the engravings of a seal, shalt thou engrave those two stones with the names of the sons of Israel; thou shalt make them to be set in settings of gold. ¹² And thou shalt put the two stones upon the shoulders of the ephod for stones of memorial unto the sons of Israel, and Aaron shall bear their names before the LORD upon his two shoulders for a memorial.

²¹ And those stones shall be in agreement with the names of the sons of Israel, twelve, in agreement with their names; each one in agreement with his name like the engravings of a seal; they shall be according to the twelve tribes.

¹⁶ And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables.

² And it shall be on the day when ye shall pass the Jordan unto the land which the LORD thy God gives thee that thou shalt set thee up great stones and plaster them with plaster; ³ And thou shalt write upon them all the words of this law when thou has passed to enter in unto the land which the LORD thy God gives thee, a land that flows with milk and honey, as the LORD God of thy fathers has said unto thee.

⁸ And thou shalt write upon the stones all the words of this law very plainly.

¹ ¶ The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron and with the point of a diamond; it is graven upon the table of their heart and upon the horns of your altars

¹⁵ and I will put enmity between thee and the woman and between thy seed and her seed; that seed shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

¹⁸ and in thy seed shall all the Gentiles of the earth be blessed because thou hast hearkened unto my voice.

¹⁹ Certainly my witness is even now in the heavens, and my record is on high.

²³ If there is a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to show unto man his uprightness; ²⁴ to tell him that God had mercy on him, that he delivered him from going down to the pit; that he found a ransom;

¹⁴ Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

³⁵ And they remembered that God was their rock and the high God their redeemer.

¹¹ For their redeemer is mighty; he shall judge their cause against thee.

¹⁴ ¶ Thus saith the LORD, your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; For your sake I have sent to Babylon and caused fugitives to descend unto all of them and the clamour of Chaldeans in the ships.

⁵ For thy Maker shall be thine husband; the LORD of the hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.

²⁰ And the Redeemer shall come to Zion and unto those that turn from the rebellion in Jacob, said the LORD. ²¹ And this shall be my covenant with them, said the LORD; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words, which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed’s seed, saith the LORD, from now on and for ever.

³⁴ Their Redeemer is strong; the LORD of the hosts is his name: he shall thoroughly plead their cause that he may give rest to the land and disquiet the inhabitants of Babylon.

²² For the Father judges no man but has committed all judgment unto the Son ²³ that everyone should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that does not honour the Son does not honour the Father who has sent him. ²⁴ Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that hears my word and believes him that sent me has eternal life and shall not come into judgment but has passed from death unto life. ²⁵ Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour shall come, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, and they that hear shall live. ²⁶ For as the Father has life in himself, so has he given to the Son to have life in himself ²⁷ and has also given him power and authority to execute judgment because he is the Son of man. ²⁸ Marvel not at this, for an hour shall come when all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, ²⁹ and those that have done good shall come forth unto the resurrection of life; but those that have done evil, unto the resurrection of judgment.

⁷ in whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins according to the riches of his grace,

¹⁴ And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his saints

⁹ Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices: my flesh also shall rest secure.

¹¹ Thou wilt show me the path of life: in thy presence is fullness of joy; in thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

¹⁵ As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness; I shall be satisfied when I awake with thy likeness.

⁸ Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

¹² For now we see as through a mirror, in darkness, but then we shall see face to face; now I know in part, but then I shall know even as I also am known.

⁵³ For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

²¹ Who shall transform our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto the body of his glory, according to the working by which he is also able to subdue all things unto himself.

² Beloved, now we are the sons of God, and it is not yet made manifest what we shall be; but we know that if he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

⁷ Behold, he comes with the clouds, and every eye shall see him and those also who pierced him; and all kindreds of the earth shall wail over him. Even so, Amen.

¹⁷ I shall see him, but not now; I shall behold him, but not near by; there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel and shall smite the corners of Moab and destroy all the sons of Seth.

²⁶ My flesh and my heart fail; the strength of my heart is that God is my portion for ever.

¹⁹ Thy dead shall live, and together with my body they shall arise. Awake and sing, ye that dwell in dust: for thy dew is as the covering of light, and the earth shall cast out the dead.

¹³ And all Israel shall mourn for him and bury him, for he only of those of Jeroboam shall enter into the grave because in him there is found some good thing of the LORD God of Israel in the house of Jeroboam.

²² Why do ye persecute me as God and are not satisfied with my flesh?

⁷ Are ye to speak iniquity for God? Are ye to speak deceitfully for him? ⁸ Are ye to bring honour unto him? Are ye to contend for God? ⁹ Would it be good for him to search you out? As one man mocks another, do ye so mock him? ¹⁰ He will reprove you severely, if in secret you give him such honour. ¹¹ Certainly his excellency should make you afraid, and his dread should fall upon you.

²² He will not believe that he shall return out of darkness, and he is always watching the sword.

⁴ Will he reprove thee or will he enter with thee into judgment because he fears thee?

⁵ Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

⁷ But the LORD shall endure for ever; he has prepared his throne for judgment.

¹⁰ The righteous shall rejoice when he sees the vengeance; he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked. ¹¹ So that a man shall say, Verily there is a reward for the righteous; verily there is a God that judges in the earth.

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth and walk in the ways of thine heart and in the sight of thine eyes; but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

¹⁴ For God shall bring every work to judgment with every secret thing, whether it is good or whether it is evil.

¹ ¶ Judge not, that ye be not judged. ² For with the judgment with which ye judge, ye shall be judged, and with the measure with which ye measure, ye shall be measured again.

¹ ¶ Let every soul submit itself to the higher powers. For there is no power but of God, and the powers that be are ordained of God. ² Whosoever therefore resists the power, resists the ordinance of God, and those that resist shall receive condemnation to themselves. ³ For the magistrates are not a terror unto those who do good, but to the doer of evil. Is thy desire therefore to not fear the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same; ⁴ for he is a minister of God for thy good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain, for he is a minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that does evil.

¹¹ ¶ Murmur not against one another, brethren. He that speaks evil of his brother and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law and judges the law; but if thou judge the law, thou art not a keeper of the law, but a judge. ¹² There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou to judge another?
