¹ ¶ Then Bildad, the Shuhite, answered and said, ² How long will it be ere ye make an end of words? Understand, and afterwards we will speak. ³ Why are we counted as beasts? Are we vile in your sight? ⁴ O thou that dost tear thy soul in thine anger; shall the earth be forsaken because of thee and shall the rocks be removed out of their place? ⁵ ¶ The light of the wicked shall certainly be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine. ⁶ The light shall be dark in his tabernacle, and his lamp shall be put out with him. ⁷ The steps of his strength shall be cut down, and his own counsel shall cast him down. ⁸ For a net shall be cast at his feet, and he shall walk upon a network. ⁹ The snare shall take him by the heel, and the robber shall prevail against him. ¹⁰ The cord is hidden in the ground and a trap for him in the way. ¹¹ ¶ Terrors shall make him afraid on every side, and his own feet shall drive him away. ¹² His strength shall be hungerbitten, and destruction shall be ready at his side. ¹³ They shall devour the protection of his skin; the firstborn of death shall devour his members. ¹⁴ His confidence shall be rooted out of his tent, and he shall be brought to the king of terrors. ¹⁵ He shall dwell in his tent, as if it were not his; brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation. ¹⁶ His roots shall be dried up beneath, and above his branch shall be cut off. ¹⁷ His memory shall perish from the earth, and he shall have no name in the streets. ¹⁸ He shall be driven from the light into the darkness and chased out of the world. ¹⁹ He shall have neither son nor grandson among his people, nor any to succeed him in his dwellings. ²⁰ Those that come after him shall be dismayed at his day, as those that went before were overcome with fear. ²¹ Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him that does not know God.

¹¹ ¶ Now three friends of Job, Eliphaz, the Temanite, Bildad, the Shuhite, and Zophar, the Naamathite, when they heard of all this evil that had come upon him, each one came from his own place; for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

⁷ ¶ And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz, the Temanite, My wrath has been kindled against thee, and against thy two friends; for ye have not spoken by me in uprightness, as my slave Job has. ⁸ Therefore, take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my slave Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my slave Job shall pray for you; for only because I will accept him, I shall not deal with you according to your folly, in that ye have not spoken by me in uprightness, like my slave Job. ⁹ So Eliphaz, the Temanite, and Bildad, the Shuhite, and Zophar, the Naamathite, went, and did according as the LORD commanded them; and the LORD accepted Job.

⁵ Let darkness and the shadow of death redeem it; let a cloud dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it. ⁶ As for that night, let darkness seize upon it; let it not be joined unto the days of the year; let it not come into the number of the months.

¹⁷ There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary are at rest.

² How long wilt thou speak such things and how long shall the words of thy mouth be like a strong wind?

² Should not the multitude of words be answered? And should a man full of talk be justified?

⁵ O that ye would altogether be silent! And it would be unto you instead of wisdom. ⁶ Hear now my dispute, and hearken to the arguments of my lips.

² Many times I have heard such things; miserable comforters are ye all. ³ Shall vain words have an end? Or what is it that emboldens thee to answer?

² Hear diligently my speech, and let this be instead of your consolations.

¹ ¶ Therefore, Job, hear now my reasons, and hearken to all my words.

¹³ ¶ For him that answers a word before he hears, it is folly and reproach unto him.

¹⁹ ¶ Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;

⁷ But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the heavens, and they shall show thee; ⁸ or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee; the fishes of the sea shall declare it unto thee also.

⁴ For with these, thou hast hid their heart from understanding; therefore, thou shalt not exalt them.

¹⁰ ¶ But return all of you, and come now; for I shall not find one that is wise among you.

²² But I was ignorant and did not understand; I was as a beast before thee.

¹⁸ I said in my heart concerning the estate of the sons of men that God might manifest them and that they might see that they themselves are beasts one to another.

¹⁰ loving one another with brotherly love, with honour preferring one another;

² It is certain that wrath kills the foolish man, and envy consumes the covetous one.

¹⁴ Why shall I take my flesh in my teeth and put my life in the palm of my hand?

¹⁸ And certainly the mountain that falls is undone, and the rocks are removed out of their place.

⁹ His wrath has torn me and has been against me; he gnashed upon me with his teeth; my enemy sharpened his eyes upon me.

⁸ Wilt thou disannul my judgment? Wilt thou condemn me, that thou may be justified?

¹⁰ For the mountains shall be removed, and the hills shall tremble; but my mercy shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be changed, said the LORD that has mercy on thee.

⁹ Then said he unto me, The iniquity of the house of Israel and Judah is exceeding great, and the land is full of blood, and the city full of perverseness, for they have said, The LORD has forsaken the earth, and the LORD does not see.

⁹ And God said to Jonah, Art thou so angry for the gourd? And he said, I do well to be angry, even unto death.

³⁵ The heaven and the earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

¹⁸ and wherever he takes him, he tears him, and he foams and gnashes with his teeth and pines away; and I spoke to thy disciples that they should cast him out, and they could not.

³⁹ And, behold, a spirit takes him, and he suddenly cries out; and it throws him into convulsions with foaming, and with difficulty it departs from him, bruising him.

⁵ that the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

¹⁷ ¶ How often is the lamp of the wicked put out and their destruction comes upon them, and God distributes sorrows upon them in his anger.

¹⁹ The way of the wicked is as darkness; they do not know in what they stumble.

⁹ ¶ The light of the righteous shall rejoice: but the fire of the wicked shall be put out.

²⁰ ¶ Whosoever curses his father or his mother, his fire shall be put out in obscure darkness.

²⁰ for the evil man shall not come to a good end; the fire of the wicked shall be put out.

¹¹ Behold, that all of you kindle fire and are compassed about with sparks; walk in the light of your fire and of the sparks that ye have kindled. From my hand has come this; ye shall be buried in sorrow.

²⁸ For thou wilt light my fire: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.

²³ and the light of a lamp shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the princes of the earth in whose witchcraft all the Gentiles have erred.

³¹ ¶ And it was told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. Then David said, O LORD, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into folly.

¹⁴ Then Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai, the Archite, is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For the LORD had given orders to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom.

¹² He frustrates the devices of the crafty, so that their hands cannot perform their enterprise. ¹³ He takes the wise in their own prudence, and the counsel of his adversaries is turned to folly.

⁶ Thine own mouth shall condemn thee, and not I; thine own lips shall testify against thee.

²² In the fullness of his sufficiency, he shall come into anguish; the hands of all the wicked shall come upon him.

¹⁶ Likewise, he would have removed thee out of the mouth of anguish into a broad place where there is no distress and should have set thy table full of fatness.

³⁶ Thou shall enlarge my steps under me, and my knees shall not tremble.

¹⁰ The LORD brings the counsel of the Gentiles to nought; he makes the devices of the peoples of no effect.

³⁰ They rejected my counsel: they despised all my reproof. ³¹ Therefore they shall eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own counsel. ³² For the rest of the ignorant shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.

¹² When thou goest in these paths, thy steps shall not be hindered; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble.

⁶ It shall be also carried unto Assyria for a present to King Jareb: Ephraim shall be ashamed, and Israel shall be confused at his own counsel.

¹⁹ For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He takes the wise in their own craftiness.

⁹ If it pleases the king, let it be written that they may be destroyed; and I will pay ten thousand talents of silver to the hands of those that have the charge of the public works, to bring it into the king’s treasuries.

¹³ And Haman told Zeresh, his wife, and all his friends all that had befallen him. Then his wise men and Zeresh, his wife, said unto him, If Mordecai is of the seed of the Jews, before whom thou hast begun to fall, thou shalt not prevail against him, but shalt surely fall before him.

⁵ And King Ahasuerus answered and said unto Esther, the queen, Who is he, and where is he, that has filled his heart with the arrogance to do so?

¹⁰ So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then the king’s wrath was pacified.

¹⁰ Therefore, snares are round about thee, and sudden fear troubles thee

¹⁵ The Gentiles are sunk down in the pit that they made: in the net which they hid their own foot is taken.

⁸ Let destruction come upon him at unawares, and let his net that he has hid catch himself; into that very destruction let him fall.

²² His own iniquities shall take hold of the wicked, and he shall be imprisoned with the cords of his sins.

⁶ ¶ In the transgression of an evil man there is a snare, but the righteous shall sing and rejoice.

³ Thus hath the Lord GOD said: I will therefore spread out my net over thee with a company of many peoples, and they shall bring thee up in my net.

⁷ Moreover he must have a good report of those who are outside lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

⁹ For those that desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition.

²⁶ and that they may become converted out of the snare of the devil, in which they are captive to do his will.

¹⁵ and the Sabeans {Heb. those of Sheba} fell upon them and took them away; they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell thee.

¹⁷ While he was yet speaking, another came and said, The Chaldeans made three bands and fell upon the camels and have carried them away and have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell thee.

⁵ The hungry shall eat up his harvest, and even take it out from among the thorns, and the thirsty shall drink up their substance.

¹⁴ Then he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock to cause a fall to both the houses of Israel, for a snare and for a net to the inhabitants of Jerusalem. ¹⁵ And many among them shall stumble and fall and be broken and be snared and be taken.

⁶ Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, with winds of whirlwinds: this shall be the portion of their cup.

¹³ But I will spread my net upon him, and he shall be taken in my snare, and I will cause him to be taken to Babylon to the land of the Chaldeans; yet he shall not see it though he shall die there.

⁹ And David says, Let their table be turned into a snare and a net and a stumblingblock and a recompense unto them;

³⁶ And upon those that are left alive of you I will send such cowardice into their hearts in the lands of their enemies, that the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursue.

⁶ For the Lord had made the host of the Syrians to hear a noise of chariots and a noise of horses, even the noise of a great host; and they said one to another, Behold, the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites and the kings of the Egyptians, to come upon us. ⁷ Therefore they had arisen and fled at the beginning of the night and had left their tents and their horses and their asses, even the camp as it was, and had fled for their lives.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me; my spirit drinks of the poison; and terrors of God combat me.

²¹ Fearful sounds are in his ears; in peace the destroyer shall come upon him.

⁸ He shall fly away as a dream and shall not be found: yea, he shall flee away as a vision of the night.

²⁵ He shall draw forth an arrow from his quiver, and like lightning it shall strike through his gall; terrors shall come upon him.

⁵ They were there in great fear where no fear was; for God has scattered the bones of him that encamps against thee: thou hast put them to shame because God has despised them.

¹⁹ How they are brought into desolation, as in a moment! They have come to an end; they are utterly consumed with terrors.

¹ ¶ The wicked flee when no man pursues, but the righteous are bold as a young lion.

²⁵ Do not go forth into the field, nor walk by the way; for the sword of the enemy and fear is on every side.

³ And it came to pass on the morrow that Pashur brought forth Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then Jeremiah said unto him: The LORD has not called thy name Pashur, {Heb. Prosperity all around}, but Magormissabib. {Heb. Fear from every side} ⁴ For thus hath the LORD said, Behold, I will make thee a terror to thyself and to all those that love thee well; and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and thine eyes shall behold it; and I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon and he shall carry them captive into Babylon, and shall smite them with the sword.

⁵ Why have I seen them dismayed and turned away back? and their mighty ones are beaten down and are fled in haste, and do not look back: for fear was round about, said the LORD.

²⁹ Their tents and their flocks shall they take away; they shall take to themselves their curtains and all their vessels and their camels; and they shall invoke fear on every side against them.

¹¹ Therefore being certain of that terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God, and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.

¹⁵ And the kings of the earth and the princes and the rich and the captains and the strong and every slave and every free man hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains ¹⁶ and said to the mountains and to the rocks, Fall on us and hide us from the face of him that is seated upon the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb;

⁵ Those that were full have hired themselves out for bread, and those that were hungry ceased so that the barren has given birth to seven, and she that has many children is waxed feeble.

³⁶ And it shall come to pass that every one that is left in thy house shall come and crouch to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into some aspect of the priesthood that I may eat a piece of bread.

²³ He wanders abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? He knows that the day of darkness is prepared for him. ²⁴ Tribulation and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

¹² If he does not turn, he will whet his sword; he has bent his bow and made it ready. ¹³ He has also prepared for him the weapons of death; he ordains his arrows against the persecutors. ¹⁴ Behold, he travails with iniquity and has conceived of his own work and brought forth falsehood.

¹⁰ Jod The young lions do lack and suffer hunger, but those that seek the LORD shall not lack any good thing.

¹⁰ Let his children be continually vagabonds and beg; let them seek their bread out of their desolate places.

²¹ Then they shall pass through this land, fatigued and hungry, and it shall come to pass that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves and curse their king and their God. And raising their face high,

³ For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction shall come upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

³ ¶ and in covetousness they shall make merchandise of you with feigned words, upon whom the condemnation from a long time ago does not delay, and their perdition does not sleep.

³ Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, principal in dignity, and the principal in power.

¹⁶ They shall go down to the bars of Sheol, and together they shall rest in the dust.

³⁰ And the firstborn of the poor shall be fed, and the needy shall lie down in safety; and I will cause thy root to die of famine, and he shall slay thy remnant.

⁶ I descended to the roots of the mountains; the earth put her bars about me for ever; yet thou hast brought up my life out of the grave, O LORD my God.

¹² And this shall be the plague with which the LORD will smite all the peoples that fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.

⁸ And I looked and, behold, a green horse, and he that was seated upon him was named Death, and Hades followed with him. And power was given unto him over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword and with hunger and with death and with the beasts of the earth.

¹⁴ For his hope shall be cut off, and his trust is a spider’s web.

²² Those that hate thee shall be clothed with shame, and the dwelling place of the wicked shall come to nought.

²⁰ But the eyes of the wicked shall consume themselves, and they shall have no refuge, and their hope shall be agony of the soul.

¹⁷ For the morning is to them even as the shadow of death; if they are known, the terrors of the shadow of death come over them.

³⁴ He despises all exalted things; he is king over all the sons of pride.

⁴ My heart is sore pained within me, and the terrors of death are fallen upon me.

¹⁰ Resh The wicked shall see it and be furious; Schin he shall gnash with his teeth and waste away: Tau The desire of the wicked shall perish.

²⁸ The hope of the righteous is joy, but the hope of the wicked shall perish.

³² ¶ For his wickedness shall the wicked be cast out, but the righteous in his death has hope.

²⁶ And every one that hears these words of mine and does not do them shall be likened unto a foolish man, who built his house upon the sand; ²⁷ and the rain descended, and the rivers came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, and it fell; and great was the fall of it.

⁵⁵ O death, where is thy sting? O Hades, where is thy victory? ⁵⁶ The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.

¹⁵ and deliver those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to slavery.

²⁴ ¶ Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of the heavens;

²³ and that the whole land thereof is brimstone and salt and burning, that it is not sown, nor shall it produce anything, nor shall any grass grow therein, like in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim, which the LORD overthrew in his anger and in his wrath;

¹² His strength shall be hungerbitten, and destruction shall be ready at his side. ¹³ They shall devour the protection of his skin; the firstborn of death shall devour his members.

¹⁸ He shall restore the work that was not his; according to the substance that he took; neither shall he devour, nor rejoice. ¹⁹ Because he oppressed and forsook the poor; because he has violently taken away houses which he did not build, ²⁰ therefore, he shall not feel quietness in his belly; he shall not escape with that which he desired. ²¹ Nothing is left that he did not eat; therefore, his goods shall not last.

³⁸ If my land cries against me and all its furrows likewise complain; ³⁹ if I ate of its strength without money or have afflicted the soul of its owners;

⁹ ¶ And the streams thereof shall be turned into pitch, and the dust thereof into sulphur, and the land thereof shall become burning pitch. ¹⁰ It shall not be quenched night nor day; its smoke shall go up for ever; from generation to generation it shall lie waste; no one shall pass through it for ever and ever.

¹³ Woe unto him that builds his house and not in righteousness and his chambers and not in judgment, using his neighbour’s service without wages and not giving him the wages of his work!

⁶ Shall not all these take up a parable against him and a taunting enigma against him and say, Woe to him that multiplied that which was not his! And for how long would he pile thick clay upon himself? ⁷ Shall they not rise up suddenly that shall bite thee and awake those that shall take thy place, and thou shalt be for a prey unto them? ⁸ Because thou hast spoiled many nations, all the other peoples shall spoil thee because of human blood and for the robberies of the land, of the cities, and of all that dwell therein. ⁹ Woe to him that covets ill-gotten gain by violence for his house that he may set his nest on high, that he may escape from the power of evil! ¹⁰ Thou hast taken shameful counsel for thy house by cutting off many peoples and hast committed a sin against thy life. ¹¹ For the stone shall cry out from the wall, and the beam out of the timber shall answer it.

⁴ I brought it forth, said the LORD of the hosts, and it shall enter into the house of the thief and into the house of him that swears falsely by my name; and it shall remain in the midst of his house and shall consume it with the timber thereof and the stones thereof.

²⁰ And the beast was taken and with it the false prophet that wrought miracles in its presence, with which he had deceived those that had taken the mark of the beast and had worshipped its image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.

⁸ But the fearful and unbelieving and the abominable and murderers and fornicators and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.

³ I have seen the foolish taking root, but at the same time I cursed his habitation. ⁴ His sons are far from saving health, and they shall be crushed in the gate, and there shall be no one to deliver them.

³⁰ He shall not escape from the darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth he shall perish.

¹⁹ My root is spread out by the waters, and the dew shall remain upon my branches.

²⁴ Therefore as the fire devours the stubble and the flame consumes the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go away as dust because they have cast away the law of the LORD of the hosts and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.

¹⁶ Ephraim was smitten, their root is dried up; they shall bear no more fruit; even though they bring forth, yet I will slay even the desirable fruit of their womb.

⁹ ¶ Yet I destroyed the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as an oak; yet I destroyed his fruit above and his roots beneath.

¹ ¶ For, behold, the day comes that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, and all that do wickedly shall be stubble; and the day that comes shall burn them up, said the LORD of the hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.

¹² Your memories shall be compared unto ashes, your bodies to bodies of clay.

¹⁶ Ain The anger of the LORD is against those that do evil to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

⁴ They have said, Come and let us cut them off from being a people that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance.

¹³ Let his posterity be cut off, and in the generation following let their name be blotted out.

²² But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it.

⁷ ¶ The memory of the just is blessed, but the name of the wicked shall stink.

²⁰ ¶ Why is light given to him that is in misery, and life unto the bitter in soul;

¹⁴ They meet with darkness in the daytime and grope in the noonday as in the night.

²² land of darkness, as darkness itself, and of the shadow of death, without any order, and where the light is as darkness.

¹⁴ if there is any iniquity in thy hand and thou dost put it far away and dost not consent that wickedness dwell in thy habitations,

²¹ Then they shall pass through this land, fatigued and hungry, and it shall come to pass that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves and curse their king and their God. And raising their face high, ²² they shall look upon the earth and behold tribulation and gross darkness, darkness and anguish; and they shall be submerged in gross darkness.

¹³ The peoples shall make noise like the rushing of great waters, but God shall reprehend them, and they shall flee far off and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind and like the tumbleweed before the whirlwind. ¹⁴ And behold at eveningtide trouble, and before the morning she is not. This is the portion of them that tread on us and the lot of them that spoil us.

³³ The same hour the word was fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from among men and ate grass as the oxen, and his body was bathed with the dew of heaven until his hair grew like eagles’ feathers and his nails like birds’ claws.

²¹ and he was driven from among the sons of men; and his heart was put with the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they made him eat grass like an ox, and his body was bathed with the dew of heaven until he understood that the most high God takes rule of the kingdom of men and that he appoints over it whomever he will.

¹³ raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own abominations; erratic stars, to whom is reserved gross darkness eternally.

¹⁹ and, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell thee.

⁴ Because thy sons sinned against him, he cast them away in the place of their rebellion;

²⁶ All darkness is kept for his secrets; a fire not blown shall consume him; his successor shall be broken in his tent. ²⁷ The heavens shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him. ²⁸ The increase of his house shall be taken captive; they shall be scattered in the day of his wrath.

¹⁴ If their sons are multiplied, it is for the sword; and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread. ¹⁵ Those that remain of him shall be buried in death; and their widows shall not weep.

¹³ He also had seven sons and three daughters. ¹⁴ And he called the name of the first, Jemima, and the name of the second, Kezia, and the name of the third, Kerenhappuch. ¹⁵ And in all the land no women were found as beautiful as the daughters of Job; and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren. ¹⁶ After this Job lived one hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, even four generations.

⁸ ¶ Woe unto those that join house to house, that lay field to field, until they have done away with the borders! Will ye dwell alone in the midst of the earth? ⁹ In my ears, the LORD of the hosts said, Of a truth many houses shall be desolate, even great and fair, without inhabitant.

²¹ Prepare slaughter for his sons for the iniquity of their fathers that they do not rise, nor possess the land, nor fill the face of the world with cities. ²² For I will rise up upon them, saith the LORD of the hosts, and cut off from Babylon the name and remnant and son and nephew, saith the LORD.

³⁰ Thus hath the LORD said, Write what shall be of this man deprived of a generation, a man unto whom nothing shall prosper in all the days of his life, for no man of his seed who sits upon the throne of David and rules over Judah shall prosper.

²³ and that the whole land thereof is brimstone and salt and burning, that it is not sown, nor shall it produce anything, nor shall any grass grow therein, like in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim, which the LORD overthrew in his anger and in his wrath; ²⁴ even all Gentiles shall say, Why has the LORD done thus unto this land? What means the heat of this great anger?

⁸ and at this house, which was high, any one that passes by it shall be astonished and shall hiss, and they shall say, Why has the LORD done thus unto this land and to this house?

¹² And when they lifted up their eyes afar off and knew him not, they lifted up their voice and wept; and each one rent his mantle and sprinkled dust upon his head toward heaven. ¹³ So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word unto him; for they saw that his grief was very great.

¹³ He has put my brethren far from me, and my acquaintances are verily estranged from me. ¹⁴ My kinsfolk have failed, and my familiar friends have forgotten me. ¹⁵ Those that dwell in my house and my maids have counted me for a stranger; I was an alien in their sight. ¹⁶ I called my slave, and he gave me no answer; I intreated him with my mouth. ¹⁷ My spirit came to be strange to my wife, although I intreated her for the sons of my own body. ¹⁸ Even the young children despised me; as I arose, they spoke against me. ¹⁹ All my intimate friends abhorred me; and those whom I loved are turned against me.

¹³ The Lord shall laugh at him, for he sees that his day is coming.

⁷ ¶ Remember, O LORD, the sons of Edom in the day of Jerusalem; who said, Raze it, raze it, even to the foundation thereof.

¹⁶ to make their land desolate, and a perpetual hissing; every one that passes thereby shall be astonished and wag his head.

²⁷ Slay all her bullocks; let them go down to the slaughter. Woe unto them! for their day is come, the time of their visitation.

²⁵ And thou, profane wicked prince of Israel, whose day is come in the time when the iniquity shall be brought to an end,

¹¹ In the day that thou didst stand on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them. ¹² But thou should not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither should thou have rejoiced over the sons of Judah in the day they were lost; neither should thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress. ¹³ Thou should not have entered into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; thou should not have looked on their affliction in the day of their calamity, nor have laid hands on their substance in the day of their calamity; ¹⁴ neither should thou have stood in the crossway, to kill those of his that did escape; neither should thou have delivered up those of his that remained in the day of distress. ¹⁵ For the day of the LORD is near upon all the Gentiles: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee; thy reward shall return upon thine own head.

⁴² saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.

⁴⁴ and shall cast thee down to the ground and thy children within thee, and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.

² And Pharaoh said, Who is the LORD, that I should hearken to his voice to let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.

¹⁰ And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers, and there arose another generation after them which did not know the LORD nor the work which he had done to Israel.

¹² But the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they did not know the LORD.

⁹ And thou, Solomon, my son, know thou the God of thy father and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing soul, for the LORD searches all hearts and understands all the imaginations of the thoughts. If thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.

¹⁴ Therefore, they say unto God, Depart from us; for we do not desire the knowledge of thy ways.

²⁸ For ye say, What is of the house of the prince, and what of the tent of the habitation of the wicked?

⁶ ¶ Pour out thy wrath upon the Gentiles that do not know thee and upon the kingdoms that do not call upon thy name.

³ And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies, but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth for they proceed from evil to evil, and they did not recognize me, said the LORD.

²⁵ Pour out thy fury upon the Gentiles that do not know thee and upon the nations that do not call on thy name: for they have eaten up Jacob and devoured him and consumed him and have destroyed his habitation.

²⁸ And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a perverse understanding, to do those things which are not convenient,

⁵ not with affection of lust, as the Gentiles who do not know God,

⁸ with flaming fire, to take vengeance on those that do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ,

¹⁶ They profess that they know God, but in works they deny him, being abominable and rebellious and reprobate unto every good work.
