¹ ¶ Then Zophar, the Naamathite, answered and said, ² My thoughts certainly cause me to answer, and therefore, I make haste. ³ I have heard the check of my reproach, and the spirit of my intelligence causes me to answer. ⁴ Dost thou not know this that always was, since man was placed upon earth, ⁵ that the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment? ⁶ Though his excellency mounts up to the heavens, and his head reaches unto the clouds, ⁷ yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung; those who have seen him shall say, What is become of him? ⁸ He shall fly away as a dream and shall not be found: yea, he shall flee away as a vision of the night. ⁹ The eye which saw him shall see him no more; neither shall his place behold him any more. ¹⁰ ¶ His poor sons shall go forth begging, and their hands shall restore that which he stole. ¹¹ His bones are full of the sins of his youth, which shall be buried with him in the dust. ¹² If wickedness was sweet in his mouth, if he hid it under his tongue, ¹³ if it seemed good unto him, and he did not forsake it, but savored it within his mouth, ¹⁴ his food shall be changed in his bowels, it shall be the gall of asps within him. ¹⁵ He has swallowed down riches, but he shall vomit them up again; God shall cast them out of his belly. ¹⁶ He shall suck the poison of asps; the viper’s tongue shall slay him. ¹⁷ He shall not see the rivers, the floods, the brooks of honey and butter. ¹⁸ He shall restore the work that was not his; according to the substance that he took; neither shall he devour, nor rejoice. ¹⁹ Because he oppressed and forsook the poor; because he has violently taken away houses which he did not build, ²⁰ therefore, he shall not feel quietness in his belly; he shall not escape with that which he desired. ²¹ Nothing is left that he did not eat; therefore, his goods shall not last. ²² In the fullness of his sufficiency, he shall come into anguish; the hands of all the wicked shall come upon him. ²³ ¶ When he is about to fill his belly, God shall cast the fury of his wrath upon him and shall rain it upon him and upon his food. ²⁴ He shall flee from the weapons of iron, and the bow of bronze shall strike him through. ²⁵ He shall draw forth an arrow from his quiver, and like lightning it shall strike through his gall; terrors shall come upon him. ²⁶ All darkness is kept for his secrets; a fire not blown shall consume him; his successor shall be broken in his tent. ²⁷ The heavens shall reveal his iniquity; and the earth shall rise up against him. ²⁸ The increase of his house shall be taken captive; they shall be scattered in the day of his wrath. ²⁹ This is the portion of a wicked man from God and the heritage that God appoints unto him by his word.

¹¹ ¶ Now three friends of Job, Eliphaz, the Temanite, Bildad, the Shuhite, and Zophar, the Naamathite, when they heard of all this evil that had come upon him, each one came from his own place; for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him.

¹ ¶ Then Zophar, the Naamathite, answered and said,

⁹ So Eliphaz, the Temanite, and Bildad, the Shuhite, and Zophar, the Naamathite, went, and did according as the LORD commanded them; and the LORD accepted Job.

² If we attempt to commune with thee, thou wilt be grieved. But who can withhold himself from speaking?

¹⁹ Who is he that will contend with me? For now, if I remain silent, I shall die.

³ I have heard the check of my reproach, and the spirit of my intelligence causes me to answer.

¹³ Lest ye should say, We have found out wisdom; it is needful that God thrust him down, and not man. ¹⁴ Now he has not directed his words against me; neither will I answer him with your reasons. ¹⁵ ¶ They were amazed, they answered no more; they left off speaking. ¹⁶ And I waited, (for they did not speak, but stopped, and answered no more); ¹⁷ I said, I will also answer my part, I will also declare my opinion. ¹⁸ For I am full of words; the spirit within me constrains me. ¹⁹ Behold, my belly is as wine which has no vent; it is ready to burst forth like spirits. ²⁰ I will speak, that I may be able to breathe; I will open my lips and answer.

²² For I said in my haste, I am cut off from before thine eyes; nevertheless thou hast heard the voice of my supplications when I cried unto thee.

² I was dumb with silence; I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred. ³ My heart was hot within me, while I was musing the fire burned; then I spoke with my tongue,

¹¹ I said in my haste, All men are liars.

²⁹ ¶ He that is slow to wrath is of great intelligence, but he that is short of spirit exalts folly.

²⁰ ¶ Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

⁹ Do not be hasty in thy spirit to be angry, for anger rests in the bosom of fools.

⁹ And I said, I will not make mention of him, nor speak any more in his name. But he was in my heart as a burning fire and within my bones; I tried to forbear, and I could not.

²⁵ And she came in with haste unto the king and asked, saying, I will that thou give me immediately in a platter the head of John the Baptist.

² For I give testimony that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.

¹⁹ ¶ Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath;

³ These ten times ye have reproached me; are ye not ashamed to make yourselves strange to me?

²⁹ Be ye afraid of the sword; for the wrath of the sword comes because of the iniquities, that ye may know there is a judgment.

² My thoughts certainly cause me to answer, and therefore, I make haste.

¹¹ ¶ I will teach you what there is in the hand of God; I will not conceal that which is regarding the Almighty.

³ My reasons declare the uprightness of my heart; and my lips shall utter pure knowledge.

³ My mouth shall speak wisdom; and the meditation of my heart intelligence.

² I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter enigmas of old, ³ which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. ⁴ We will not hide them from their sons, showing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD and his strength and his wonderful works that he has done. ⁵ For he established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their sons:

²⁸ And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the fowl of the air and over every beast that moves upon the earth.

¹ ¶ And God blessed Noah and his sons and said unto them, Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth. ² And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every animal of the earth and upon every fowl of the heavens, upon all that moves upon the earth and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand they are delivered. ³ Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you; even as the green grass I have given you all things.

⁸ ¶ Ask, I pray thee, of the former age, and be willing to enquire of thy fathers regarding them; ⁹ for we are but of yesterday and know nothing because our days upon earth are as a shadow.

¹⁰ Among us are also gray hairs; there are also aged men, much elder than thy father.

⁷ I said, Days shall speak, and the multitude of years shall declare wisdom.

¹⁶ The heavens are the heavens of the LORD, but the earth he has given to the sons of Adam.

⁹ The enemy said, I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil; my soul shall be satisfied upon them; I will draw my sword, my hand shall destroy them. ¹⁰ Thou didst blow with thy wind, the sea covered them. They sank as lead in the mighty waters.

²¹ But the Philistines took hold of him and put out his eyes and brought him down to Gaza and bound him with fetters of iron that he should grind in the prison house. ²² ¶ And the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaven. ²³ Then the cardinals of the Philistines gathered themselves together to offer a great sacrifice unto Dagon their god and to rejoice, for they said, Our god has delivered Samson our enemy into our hands. ²⁴ And when the people saw him, they praised their god, for they said, Our god has delivered our enemy into our hands, the destroyer of our country, who slew many of us. ²⁵ And it came to pass when their hearts were merry, that they said, Call for Samson that he may make us laugh. And they called for Samson out of the prison house; and he made them sport, and they set him between the pillars. ²⁶ And Samson said unto the lad that held him by the hand, Bring me near and let me feel the pillars upon which the house stands that I may lean upon them. ²⁷ Now the house was full of men and women; and all the cardinals of the Philistines were there, and upon the roof there were about three thousand men and women that beheld while Samson was mocked. ²⁸ Then Samson called unto the LORD and said, O Lord GOD, remember me now and strengthen me now only this once, O God, that I may take vengeance at once of the Philistines for my two eyes. ²⁹ Then Samson took hold of the two middle pillars upon which the house stood and on which it was borne up, and leaned upon them, on the one with his right hand and on the other with his left. ³⁰ And Samson said, Let me die with the Philistines. And he pushed with all his might, and the house fell upon the cardinals and upon all the people that were in it. So the dead which he slew at his death were more than those which he slew in his life.

¹¹ And Haman told them of the glory of his riches and the multitude of his sons and all the things in which the king had promoted him and how he had advanced him above the princes and slaves of the king. ¹² Haman said, moreover, Even Esther, the queen, let no one come in with the king unto the banquet that she had prepared but myself, and tomorrow I am also invited by her with the king.

¹⁰ So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then the king’s wrath was pacified.

³ I have seen the foolish taking root, but at the same time I cursed his habitation.

¹² Whilst it is yet in its greenness and not cut down, it withers before any other herb. ¹³ So are the paths of all that forget God, and the hypocrite’s hope shall perish.

¹⁹ Behold, this is the joy of his way, and out of the earth from where he was transplanted, others shall grow.

²⁹ He shall not become rich, nor shall his strength be established, neither shall he extend his beauty upon the earth. ³⁰ He shall not escape from the darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth he shall perish. ³¹ He shall not be established; in vanity he shall err; therefore, he shall be changed into vanity. ³² He shall be cut off before his time, and his branch shall not be green. ³³ He shall shake off his sour grapes as the vine and shall cast off his flower as the olive. ³⁴ For the congregation of the hypocrites shall be made desolate, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.

⁵ ¶ The light of the wicked shall certainly be put out, and the spark of his fire shall not shine. ⁶ The light shall be dark in his tabernacle, and his lamp shall be put out with him.

⁸ For what is the hope of the hypocrite, though he has stolen much, when God takes away his soul?

¹³ This is the portion of a wicked man with God and the heritage of the violent, which they shall receive of the Almighty. ¹⁴ If their sons are multiplied, it is for the sword; and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread. ¹⁵ Those that remain of him shall be buried in death; and their widows shall not weep. ¹⁶ Though he heaps up silver as the dust and prepares raiment as the clay, ¹⁷ he may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver. ¹⁸ He built his house as a moth and as a booth that the keeper makes. ¹⁹ The rich man shall lie down, but he shall not be gathered; he shall open his eyes and not see anyone. ²⁰ Terrors shall take hold on him as waters; a whirlwind shall carry him away in the night. ²¹ The east wind shall take him away, and he shall depart; the storm shall catch him up out of his place. ²² For God shall cast down on him and not spare; he would attempt to flee out of his hand. ²³ Men shall clap their hands at him, and from his place they shall hiss at him.

³⁵ Resh I have seen the wicked in great power and spreading himself like a green bay tree. ³⁶ Yet he passed away, and, behold, he was not: I sought him, but he could not be found.

¹⁸ Surely thou didst set them in slippery places; in desolation thou shalt cause them to fall. ¹⁹ How they are brought into desolation, as in a moment! They have come to an end; they are utterly consumed with terrors. ²⁰ As the dream of one who awakes; so, O Lord, when thou shalt rise up, thou shalt despise their appearances.

²¹ ¶ Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of the heavens, but he that doeth the will of my Father who is in the heavens.

²⁰ But he that was planted in stony places, the same is he that hears the word and receives it immediately with joy; ²¹ yet he has no root in himself but is temporal, for when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, by and by he is offended.

²² And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of god, and not of man. ²³ And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him because he did not give God the glory, and he expired eaten of worms.

⁴ But let everyone prove his own work, and then he shall have glory regarding only himself, and not in another.

¹⁶ But now ye boast in your arrogance; all such glory is evil.

⁴ And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

¹³ Thou who said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven; upon high next to the stars of God I will exalt my throne: and I will sit upon the mount of the testimony and in the sides of the north; ¹⁴ I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.

¹¹ The tree grew and made itself strong, and its height reached unto heaven, and its sight to the end of all the earth:

²² it is thou, O king, that grew and made thyself strong; for thy greatness has grown and has reached unto heaven, and thy dominion to the end of the earth.

² Though they dig unto Sheol, from there shall my hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, from there I will bring them down;

³ The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground? ⁴ Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle and though thou set thy nest among the stars, from there I will bring thee down, said the LORD.

²³ And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to Hades, for if the mighty works which have been done in thee had been done in those of Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

¹⁰ therefore, behold, I will bring evil upon the house of Jeroboam and will cut off from Jeroboam everyone that pisses against the wall, the one that is shut up along with the one that is left in Israel, and will burn away the remnant of the house of Jeroboam, as a man burns away dung until it is all gone.

³⁷ And the carcase of Jezebel shall be as dung upon the face of the field in the portion of Jezreel so that no one shall be able to say, This is Jezebel.

²⁰ They are destroyed from morning to evening; they perish for ever without anyone regarding it.

¹⁰ he shall return no more to his house; neither shall his place know him any more.

¹⁸ If he is uprooted from his place, then it shall deny him, saying, I have not seen thee.

¹⁰ But when man shall die and be cut off, and the man shall perish, where shall he be?

¹⁰ who perished at Endor; they became as dung for the earth.

² and they shall spread them before the sun and the moon and all the host of heaven, whom they have loved and whom they have served and after whom they have walked and whom they have sought and whom they have worshipped: they shall not be gathered, nor be buried; they shall be for dung upon the face of the earth.

¹⁸ He shall be driven from the light into the darkness and chased out of the world.

¹⁰ And he rode upon a cherub and flew: yea, he flew upon the wings of the wind.

²⁰ As the dream of one who awakes; so, O Lord, when thou shalt rise up, thou shalt despise their appearances.

⁵ Thou dost cause them to pass by as the waters of a river; they are as a dream, which is strong in the morning like grass.

⁷ And the multitude of all the Gentiles that shall fight against Ariel, even all that shall fight against her and their siege weapons, and those that shall distress her, shall be as a dream of a night vision. ⁸ It shall even be as he who dreams that he is hungry, and in his dream, he eats; but when he awakes, his soul is empty; and as he who dreams that he is thirsty, and, in his dream, he drinks; but he awakes, and, behold, he is faint, and his soul is still thirsty: so shall the multitude of all the Gentiles be, that shall fight against Mount Zion.

⁸ The eyes of those that see me now shall not see me again; thine eyes shall be upon me, and I will cease to be.

⁷ yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung; those who have seen him shall say, What is become of him?

³ that all the while my breath is in me, and the spirit of God is in my nostrils,

¹⁰ Vau For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be; thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be.

³⁶ Yet he passed away, and, behold, he was not: I sought him, but he could not be found.

¹⁵ As for man, his days are as grass; as an open flower of the field, so he blossoms. ¹⁶ For the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place shall know it no more.

² For if thou refuse to let them go and wilt hold them still,

³⁶ And the LORD gave the people grace in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they gave unto them such things as they required. And they spoiled the Egyptians.

¹ ¶ If a man shall steal an ox or a sheep and kill it or sell it he shall restore five oxen for an ox and four sheep for a sheep.

¹¹ and thou mourn at the last when thy flesh and thy body are consumed ¹² and say, How have I hated chastening and my heart despised reproof ¹³ and have not obeyed the voice of those who chastened me, nor inclined my ear to those that instructed me!

²² His own iniquities shall take hold of the wicked, and he shall be imprisoned with the cords of his sins. ²³ He shall die because he did not submit to chastening; and due to the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

³² ¶ For his wickedness shall the wicked be cast out, but the righteous in his death has hope.

¹³ In thy perverse filthiness thou shalt die because I have cleansed thee, and thou didst not cleanse thyself from thy uncleanness; thou shalt never cleanse thyself again, until I have caused my fury to rest upon thee.

²⁷ And they shall not lie with the mighty that are fallen of the uncircumcised, who are gone down to Sheol with their weapons of war: and they have laid their swords under their heads, but their sins shall be upon their bones because they were the terror of the mighty in the land of the living.

²¹ ¶ Then Jesus said again unto them, I am going away, and ye shall seek me, but ye shall die in your sins; where I go, ye shall not be able to come.

²⁴ Therefore I said unto you that ye shall die in your sins, for if ye do not believe that I AM, ye shall die in your sins.

²⁵ that he may take the lot or inheritance of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas rebelled that he might go to his own place.

⁶ ¶ And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was desirable to the eyes, and a tree of covetousness to understand, she took of its fruit and ate and gave also unto her husband with her; and he ate.

¹⁶ How much less the man who is abominable and filthy, who drinks iniquity like water?

⁷ His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity.

¹⁷ As he loved the curse, so let it come unto him; as he delighted not in the blessing, so let it be far from him. ¹⁸ As he clothed himself with the curse like as with his garment, and it entered into his bowels like water and like oil into his bones.

¹⁷ Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant. ¹⁸ But he does not know that the dead are there and that her guests are in the depths of Sheol.

¹⁷ ¶ Bread of deceit is sweet to a man, but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel.

⁹ Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth and walk in the ways of thine heart and in the sight of thine eyes; but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

¹⁸ But thou shalt say unto the people, Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, and ye shall eat flesh, for ye have wept in the ears of the LORD, saying, Who shall give us flesh to eat? for it was better with us in Egypt. Therefore the LORD will give you flesh, and ye shall eat. ¹⁹ Ye shall not eat one day nor two days nor five days neither ten days nor twenty days, ²⁰ But even a whole month, until it comes out of your nostrils and it becomes loathsome unto you, because ye have despised the LORD who is among you and have wept before him, saying, Why have we come forth out of Egypt?

²⁹ Therefore if thy right eye should bring thee occasion to stumble, pluck it out and cast it from thee; for it is better for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. ³⁰ And if thy right hand should bring thee occasion to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from thee: for it is better for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

⁴³ And if thy hand causes thee to fall, cut it off; it is better for thee to enter into life maimed than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that can never be quenched, ⁴⁴ where their worm does not die, and the fire is never quenched. ⁴⁵ And if thy foot causes thee to fall, cut it off; it is better for thee to enter halt into life than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that can never be quenched, ⁴⁶ where their worm does not die, and the fire is never quenched. ⁴⁷ And if thine eye causes thee to fall, pluck it out; it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye than having two eyes to be cast into hell, ⁴⁸ where their worm does not die, and the fire is never quenched. ⁴⁹ For every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt.

¹³ For if ye live according to the flesh, ye shall die; but if through the Spirit ye mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.

²⁴ They shall be consumed with hunger and devoured with burning heat and with bitter destruction; I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them, with the poison of serpents of the dust.

² And it came to pass one evening, that David arose from off his bed and walked upon the roof of the king’s house, and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself, and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. ³ And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah, the Hittite? ⁴ And David sent messengers and took her, and she came in unto him, and he lay with her. Then she purified herself from her uncleanness, and she returned unto her house. ⁵ And the woman conceived and sent and told David and said, I am with child.

¹⁰ Now, therefore, the sword shall never depart from thy house because thou hast despised me and hast taken the wife of Uriah, the Hittite, to be thy wife. ¹¹ Thus hath the LORD said, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thy own house, and I will take thy wives before thy eyes and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.

³ When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long. ⁴ For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my green growth is turned into the drought of summer. Selah.

to bring to remembrance. ¶ O LORD, rebuke me not in thy wrath: neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure. ² For thine arrows stick fast in me, and thy hand presses me sore. ³ There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin. ⁴ For my iniquities are gone over my head; as a heavy burden they are too heavy for me. ⁵ My wounds stink and are corrupt because of my foolishness. ⁶ I am troubled; I am bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long. ⁷ For my loins are filled with a loathsome disease, and there is no soundness in my flesh. ⁸ I am feeble and sore broken; I roar by reason of the disquietness of my heart.

⁸ Make me to hear joy and gladness that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. ⁹ Hide thy face from my sins and eradicate all my iniquities.

³¹ Therefore they shall eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own counsel.

²⁰ Do not be among those who are drunk with wine; nor among gluttonous eaters of food; ²¹ for the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty, and drowsiness shall cause them to wear rags.

²⁹ ¶ For who shall be the woe? for who shall be the woe? for who contention? for who quarrels? for who the wounds without cause? who shall have redness of eyes? ³⁰ For those that tarry long at the wine; those that go to seek mixed wine. ³¹ Do not look upon the wine when it is red, when it gives its colour in the cup, it goes down smoothly. ³² At the last it bites like a serpent and stings like an adder. ³³ Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things. ³⁴ Yea, thou shalt be as he that lies down in the midst of the sea or as he that sleeps at the rudder. ³⁵ They have stricken me, thou shalt say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not; when I shall awake, I will seek it yet again.

¹⁹ Thine own wickedness shall chastise thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee; know therefore and see how evil and bitter it is, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God and that my fear is lacking in thee, saith the Lord GOD of the hosts.

² If ye will not hear, and if ye will not lay it to heart, to give glory unto my name, said the LORD of the hosts, I will send a curse upon you, and I will curse your blessings; yea, I have cursed them already because ye do not lay it to heart.

¹³ Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips,

⁸ Didst thou eat thy part? Thou shalt vomit it up and lose thy sweet words.

³ Then Judas, who had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the princes of the priests and the elders, ⁴ saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? Thou shalt see to it.

⁶ The burden of the beasts of the south: into the land of trouble and anguish, from whence come the young and old lion, the viper and fiery flying serpent; they will carry their riches upon the shoulders of young asses and their treasures upon the bunches of camels, to a people that shall not profit them.

⁷ ¶ But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who taught you to flee from the wrath to come?

³ And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out of the heat and fastened on his hand. ⁴ And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he has escaped the sea, yet vengeance does not suffer him to live. ⁵ And he shook off the beast into the fire and felt no harm. ⁶ But they were waiting to see when he should have swollen or fallen down dead suddenly; but after they had waited a great while and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.

²³ surely they shall not see the land which I swore unto their fathers, neither shall any of those that provoked me see it.

¹³ He made him ride on the high places of the earth that he might eat the fruits of the field; and he made him to suck honey out of the rock and oil out of the strong flint, ¹⁴ butter of cows and milk of sheep, with fat of lambs and rams of the sons of Bashan (or fruitfulness) and goats with the fat of kidneys, of wheat; and thou didst drink the blood of the grape, pure wine.

²⁹ and honey and butter and sheep and cheese of cows for David and for the people that were with him, to eat, for they said, These people are hungry and weary and thirsty in the wilderness.

² Then a captain on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God and said, Behold, if the LORD would make windows in heaven, might this thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat of it.

⁶ when I washed my steps with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil!

⁸ They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house, and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures. ⁹ For with thee is the fountain of life; in thy light shall we see light.

¹⁶ And God would have fed them also the finest of the wheat, and with honey out of the rock I would have satisfied thee.

¹⁵ He shall eat butter and honey that he may know to refuse the evil and choose the good.

²² and it shall come to pass for the abundance of milk that they shall give, he shall eat butter; for butter and honey shall every one eat that is left in the land.

¹⁷ The poor and needy seek the waters that are not; their tongue fails for thirst; I the LORD will hear them; I the God of Israel will not forsake them.

⁶ For he shall be like the heath in the desert and shall not see when good comes, but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land and not inhabited. ⁷ Blessed is the man that is steadfast in the LORD and whose trust is the LORD. ⁸ For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, that spreads out her roots by the river and shall not see when heat comes, but her leaf shall be green and shall not be fatigued in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.

²⁴ And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.

¹ ¶ And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb.

⁵ that the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment?

¹⁰ ¶ His poor sons shall go forth begging, and their hands shall restore that which he stole.

¹⁵ He has swallowed down riches, but he shall vomit them up again; God shall cast them out of his belly.

²⁵ if I rejoiced because my wealth was being multiplied, and because my hand had gotten much;

²⁹ If I rejoiced at the destruction of the one that hated me or lifted up myself when evil found him;

¹² Let us swallow them up alive as Sheol and whole as those that go down into the pit;

⁷ The new wine is lost; the vine is sick; all those who were merryhearted sigh. ⁸ The mirth of tambourines ceases; the noise of those that rejoice ends; the joy of the harp ceases. ⁹ They shall not drink wine with a song; the drink shall be bitter to them that would drink it. ¹⁰ The city of confusion is broken down: every house is shut up that no man may come in. ¹¹ There is a crying for wine in the streets; all joy is darkened; the mirth of the land is gone.

¹⁵ What part has my beloved in my house, seeing she has wrought lewdness with many? The holy flesh shall pass from upon thee, for in thy evil thou didst glory. ¹⁶ The LORD called thy name, A green olive tree, beautiful in fruit and in appearance. At the voice of a great word he caused fire to be kindled upon it, and they broke her branches.

¹³ Woe unto him that builds his house and not in righteousness and his chambers and not in judgment, using his neighbour’s service without wages and not giving him the wages of his work!

¹⁷ But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness and for to shed innocent blood and for oppression and for violence, to do it.

³⁴ Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon has devoured me; he has crushed me; he has made me an empty vessel, he has swallowed me up like a dragon; he has filled his belly with my delicates; he has cast me out.

⁴⁴ And I will visit Bel himself in Babylon, and I will bring forth out of his mouth that which he has swallowed up; and the Gentiles shall not flow together any more unto him; and the wall of Babylon shall fall.

¹⁶ Pe All thine enemies opened their mouths regarding thee; they whistled and gnashed their teeth; they said, Swallow her up; certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found it, we have seen it.

¹² The time is come, the day draws near; do not let the buyer rejoice, nor the seller mourn; for wrath is upon all the multitude thereof.

⁷ For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind; they shall have no harvest; the fruit shall yield no meal: if so be it yields, the strangers shall swallow it up. ⁸ ¶ Israel shall be swallowed up; soon they shall be among the Gentiles as a vessel in which there is no pleasure.

¹ ¶ Do not rejoice, O Israel, for joy, as the peoples; for thou hast gone a whoring from thy God, thou hast loved the salary of a harlot upon every threshing floor.

⁴ ¶ Hear this, O ye that swallow up the needy, and cut off the poor of the land,

¹³ ¶ But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of the heavens in front of men, for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye those that are entering to go in.

²⁴ Ye blind guides, who strain at a gnat and swallow a camel.

⁸ Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. ⁹ Be afflicted and mourn and weep; let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to heaviness.

³³ The fruit of thy land and all thy labours shall a people which thou knowest not eat up; and thou shalt only be oppressed and crushed all the days.

³ Behold, here I am; witness against me before the LORD and before his anointed. If I have taken anyone’s ox or if I have taken anyone’s ass or if I have defrauded anyone or if I have oppressed anyone or if I have received a bribe {Heb. ransom} from anyone to blind my eyes, I will restore it you. ⁴ And they said, Thou hast not defrauded us nor oppressed us; neither hast thou taken anything of any man’s hand.

¹⁹ And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus hath the LORD said, Hast thou murdered and also taken possession? And thou shalt speak unto him again, saying, Thus hath the LORD said, In the same place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall the dogs also lick thy blood, even thine.

¹⁵ He shall dwell in his tent, as if it were not his; brimstone shall be scattered upon his habitation.

²⁷ ¶ Behold, I know your thoughts and the imaginations which ye devise against me. ²⁸ For ye say, What is of the house of the prince, and what of the tent of the habitation of the wicked?

⁶ For thou didst take a pledge from thy brother without cause and stripped the naked of their clothing.

² Some remove the landmarks; they violently take away flocks and feed thereof. ³ They drive away the ass of the fatherless; they take the widow’s ox for a pledge. ⁴ They turn the needy out of the way; and all the poor of the earth hide themselves from them. ⁵ Behold, as wild asses in the desert, they go forth to their work, rising early for a prey; the wilderness yields food for them and for their children. ⁶ In the field they reap their fodder, and the wicked gather the vintage that is not theirs. ⁷ They cause the naked to lodge without clothing, that they have no covering in the cold. ⁸ They are wet with the floods of the mountains and embrace the rock for want of a covering. ⁹ They pluck the fatherless from the breast and take a pledge of the poor. ¹⁰ They cause the naked to go without clothing, and they take away the sheaves from the hungry. ¹¹ They press oil within their walls and tread their winepresses and suffer thirst. ¹² Men groan from out of the city, and the souls of the dead cry out; yet God did not hinder them.

¹³ If I had despised the right of my manslave or of my maidslave, when they contended with me; ¹⁴ what then would I do when God rises up? And when he visits, what would I answer him? ¹⁵ Did not he that made me in the belly also make him? And did not the same one fashion us in the womb? ¹⁶ ¶ If I have disturbed the desire of the poor or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail; ¹⁷ or have eaten my morsel alone and the fatherless has not eaten thereof; ¹⁸ (for from my youth the fatherless was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided the widow from my mother’s womb) ¹⁹ if I have seen any perish for want of clothing or any needy without a covering; ²⁰ if his loins have not blessed me and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep; ²¹ if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, even when I saw that they would all help me in the gate; ²² then let my back fall from my shoulder blade, and my arm be broken from its joint.

³⁸ If my land cries against me and all its furrows likewise complain; ³⁹ if I ate of its strength without money or have afflicted the soul of its owners;

⁹ ¶ By reason of the great violence they shall call out; they cry out because of the strength of the many.

¹⁸ to judge the fatherless and the oppressed that the man of the earth may no longer oppress.

⁵ For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, now I will arise, saith the LORD; I will set in safety the one whom the wicked one has ensnared.

³¹ ¶ He that oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker, but he that has mercy on the poor, honours him.

²² ¶ Rob not the poor, because he is poor: neither destroy the destitute in judgment: ²³ For the LORD will judge their cause and spoil the soul of those that spoiled them.

¹ ¶ So I returned and considered all the violence that is done under the sun and behold the tears of such as are oppressed, and they have no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but the oppressed had no comforter.

⁸ If thou seest violence unto the poor and the extortion of rights and justice in a province, do not marvel at the matter, for height is looking upon height; and there is one higher than they.

⁷ For the vineyard of the LORD of the hosts is the house of Israel and every man of Judah his pleasant plant; and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry. ⁸ ¶ Woe unto those that join house to house, that lay field to field, until they have done away with the borders! Will ye dwell alone in the midst of the earth?

³⁴ Lamed To crush under his feet all the prisoners of the earth,

²⁹ The people of the land have used oppression and exercised robbery and have done violence unto the poor and needy; they have oppressed the stranger wrongfully.

¹ ¶ Hear this word, ye cows of Bashan, that are in the mountain of Samaria, who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, who say to their masters, Bring, and let us drink. ² The Lord GOD has sworn by his holiness that, behold, the days shall come upon you that he will take you away with hooks, and your posterity in fishing boats. ³ And ye shall go forth by the breaches one after another, and ye shall be cast out of the palace, saith the LORD.

² And they coveted fields and stole them, and houses and took them away; so they oppressed the man and his house, even the man and his heritage.

⁹ Ye have cast the women of my people out from their pleasant houses; from their children ye have taken away my continual praise.

⁶ But ye have despised the poor. Do not the rich oppress you with tyranny and draw you with violence to the courts?

¹³ For judgment without mercy shall be done unto the one that has shown no mercy; and mercy boasts against judgment.

⁴ Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped your fields (which you have kept back by fraud) cries out; and the cries of those who have reaped have entered into the ears of the Lord of the hosts.

¹³ There is another sore evil which I have seen under the sun, namely, riches kept for the owners thereof to their hurt; ¹⁴ which are lost by evil pursuits and to the sons which he has begotten; there is nothing left in his hand.

²⁰ But the wicked are like the sea in tempest, that cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. ²¹ There is no peace, saith my God, for the wicked.

²⁹ He shall not become rich, nor shall his strength be established, neither shall he extend his beauty upon the earth.

¹⁹ He shall have neither son nor grandson among his people, nor any to succeed him in his dwellings.

¹¹ As the partridge that steals that which she did not hatch, is he that gets riches and not with righteousness; in the midst of his days he shall leave them, and at his end shall be a fool.

²⁴ And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. ²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime didst receive thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted here, and thou art tormented.

² And the LORD sent against him armies of the Chaldees and armies of the Syrians and armies of the Moabites and armies of the sons of Ammon and sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the LORD, which he spoke by his slaves the prophets.

¹⁵ and the Sabeans {Heb. those of Sheba} fell upon them and took them away; they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell thee.

¹⁷ While he was yet speaking, another came and said, The Chaldeans made three bands and fell upon the camels and have carried them away and have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell thee.

¹⁷ There the wicked cease from troubling; and there the weary are at rest.

¹¹ God has delivered me unto the liar, and in the hands of the wicked he has caused me to tremble.

⁷ The steps of his strength shall be cut down, and his own counsel shall cast him down.

⁵ Behold, thou hast made my days as a handbreadth, and my age is as nothing before thee; verily every man that lives is altogether vanity. Selah.

¹⁸ Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun, which I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me. ¹⁹ And who knows whether he shall be a wise man or a fool, he who shall have rule over all my labour in which I have laboured and in which I have showed myself wise under the sun? This is also vanity. ²⁰ Therefore my heart began to despair again regarding all the labour which I took under the sun.

⁶ I will send him against a hypocritical nation, and upon the people of my wrath will I send him to take spoil and to take prey and to ready them that they might be tread down like the mire of the streets.

⁷ As much as she has glorified herself and lived deliciously, give her that much torment and sorrow; for she says in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.

²⁴ ¶ Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of the heavens;

²³ And Moses stretched forth his rod toward heaven, and the LORD raised his voice and it hailed, and the fire ran along upon the ground; and the LORD rained hail upon the land of Egypt.

³³ And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, before it was chewed, the wrath of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD smote the people with a very great plague.

⁶ Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, with winds of whirlwinds: this shall be the portion of their cup.

³⁰ they were not estranged from their lust. But while their food was yet in their mouths, ³¹ the wrath of God came upon them and slew the fattest of them and smote down the chosen of Israel.

⁴ My heart panted; the horror frightened me; the night of my pleasure he has turned into fear unto me.

¹⁷ and he thought within himself, saying, What shall I do because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? ¹⁸ And he said, This will I do: I will pull down my storehouses and build greater, and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods. ¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast many goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. ²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee; then whose shall those things be which thou hast stored up?

³⁵ he who trains my hands for war and causes my arms to break the bow of bronze.

³⁰ But the rest fled to Aphek into the city, and the wall fell upon twenty-seven thousand of the men that were left. And Benhadad also fled and came into the city, into an inner chamber.

²³ until the arrow pierces through his liver. He is as a bird struggling in the snare and not knowing that it is against his own life.

¹⁸ And it shall come to pass that he who shall flee from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that shall come up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: because from on high, windows have been opened, and the foundations of the earth shall shake.

⁴³ Fear and the pit and the snare shall be upon thee, O inhabitant of Moab, said the LORD. ⁴⁴ He that flees from the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that gets up out of the pit shall be taken in the snare; for I will bring upon him, even upon Moab, the year of their visitation, said the LORD.

¹⁹ As if a man fled from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall and a serpent bit him.

¹ ¶ I saw the Lord standing upon the altar, and he said, Smite the threshold and shake the doors and cut the head of them all into pieces; and I will slay the last of them with the sword; there shall be none of them left to flee away or to escape. ² Though they dig unto Sheol, from there shall my hand take them; though they climb up to heaven, from there I will bring them down; ³ and though they hide themselves in the top of Carmel, I will search and take them out of there; and though they hide from my sight in the bottom of the sea, from there will I command the serpent, and he shall bite them:

⁴¹ if I whet the resplendence of my sword and my hand takes hold on judgment, I will render vengeance to my enemies and will recompense those that hate me.

¹⁴ Then Joab answered, I may not tarry thus with thee. And taking three darts in his hand, he thrust them through the heart of Absalom while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.

⁴ For the arrows of the Almighty are within me; my spirit drinks of the poison; and terrors of God combat me.

²¹ Fearful sounds are in his ears; in peace the destroyer shall come upon him.

¹³ His archers compassed me round about; he cleaved my kidneys asunder and did not spare; he poured out my gall upon the ground.

¹¹ ¶ Terrors shall make him afraid on every side, and his own feet shall drive him away.

²⁰ Terrors shall take hold on him as waters; a whirlwind shall carry him away in the night.

¹² If he does not turn, he will whet his sword; he has bent his bow and made it ready.

¹⁹ How they are brought into desolation, as in a moment! They have come to an end; they are utterly consumed with terrors.

¹⁵ I am afflicted and destitute; from my youth up I have feared thee and been in awe of thee.

³ And it came to pass on the morrow that Pashur brought forth Jeremiah out of the stocks. Then Jeremiah said unto him: The LORD has not called thy name Pashur, {Heb. Prosperity all around}, but Magormissabib. {Heb. Fear from every side} ⁴ For thus hath the LORD said, Behold, I will make thee a terror to thyself and to all those that love thee well; and they shall fall by the sword of their enemies, and thine eyes shall behold it; and I will give all Judah into the hand of the king of Babylon and he shall carry them captive into Babylon, and shall smite them with the sword.

¹¹ Therefore being certain of that terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God, and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.

¹⁸ He shall be driven from the light into the darkness and chased out of the world. ¹⁹ He shall have neither son nor grandson among his people, nor any to succeed him in his dwellings.

⁹ Thou shalt make them as a fiery oven in the time of thine anger; the LORD shall swallow them up in his wrath, and the fire shall devour them.

⁹ Let his children be fatherless and his wife a widow. ¹⁰ Let his children be continually vagabonds and beg; let them seek their bread out of their desolate places. ¹¹ Let the extortioner catch all that he has, and let the strangers spoil his labour. ¹² Let there be no one to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favour his fatherless children. ¹³ Let his posterity be cut off, and in the generation following let their name be blotted out. ¹⁴ Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the LORD, and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out. ¹⁵ Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.

⁴ Sharp arrows of the mighty, with coals of juniper.

²² they shall look upon the earth and behold tribulation and gross darkness, darkness and anguish; and they shall be submerged in gross darkness.

²⁰ Thou shalt not be numbered with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land and slain thy people; the seed of evildoers shall not be forever. ²¹ Prepare slaughter for his sons for the iniquity of their fathers that they do not rise, nor possess the land, nor fill the face of the world with cities. ²² For I will rise up upon them, saith the LORD of the hosts, and cut off from Babylon the name and remnant and son and nephew, saith the LORD.

³³ For Tophet is ordained of yesterday for the king of Babylon, it is also prepared; he has deepened and enlarged the pile of her fire and much wood; the breath of the LORD like a stream of brimstone kindles it.

¹² whose fan is in his hand; and he will thoroughly purge his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the storehouse, but he will burn up the chaff with fire that shall never be quenched.

¹² But the sons of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

¹³ raging waves of the sea, foaming out their own abominations; erratic stars, to whom is reserved gross darkness eternally.

²⁸ Gather unto me all the elders of your tribes and your officers, and I shall speak these words in their ears and call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against them.

¹⁸ O earth, do not cover my blood; and let there be no place where my cry is hidden.

²⁰ If we have forgotten the name of our God or stretched out our hands to a strange god, ²¹ shall not God search this out? For he knows the secrets of the heart.

²¹ For, behold, the LORD comes out of his place to visit the iniquity of the inhabitant of the earth against himself: the earth also shall disclose her blood and shall no longer cover her slain.

²³ because they have committed villainy in Israel, and have committed adultery with their neighbours’ wives, and have spoken a word falsely in my name, which I have not commanded them; even I know and am a witness, saith the LORD.

⁵ And I will come near unto you for judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers and against the adulterers and against false swearers and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and do not fear me, said the LORD of the hosts.

² For there is nothing covered that shall not be revealed, neither hid that shall not be known. ³ Therefore whatever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light, and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.

¹⁶ in the day when God shall judge that which men have covered up, according to my gospel by Jesus, the Christ.

⁵ Therefore, judge nothing before the time, until the Lord comes, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts; and then shall each one have praise of God.

³¹ Thine ox shall be slain before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof; thine ass shall be violently taken away from before thy face and shall not be restored to thee; thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies, and thou shalt have no one to rescue them.

¹⁷ Behold, the days come that all that is in thy house and that which thy fathers have laid up in store unto this day shall be carried into Babylon; nothing shall be left, saith the LORD.

⁵ The hungry shall eat up his harvest, and even take it out from among the thorns, and the thirsty shall drink up their substance.

¹⁸ He shall restore the work that was not his; according to the substance that he took; neither shall he devour, nor rejoice. ¹⁹ Because he oppressed and forsook the poor; because he has violently taken away houses which he did not build, ²⁰ therefore, he shall not feel quietness in his belly; he shall not escape with that which he desired. ²¹ Nothing is left that he did not eat; therefore, his goods shall not last. ²² In the fullness of his sufficiency, he shall come into anguish; the hands of all the wicked shall come upon him.

³⁰ That the wicked is reserved for the day of destruction, they shall be brought forth to the day of wrath.

¹⁴ If their sons are multiplied, it is for the sword; and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread. ¹⁵ Those that remain of him shall be buried in death; and their widows shall not weep. ¹⁶ Though he heaps up silver as the dust and prepares raiment as the clay, ¹⁷ he may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver. ¹⁸ He built his house as a moth and as a booth that the keeper makes. ¹⁹ The rich man shall lie down, but he shall not be gathered; he shall open his eyes and not see anyone.

⁴ ¶ Riches shall not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness shall deliver from death.

¹⁸ Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD’s wrath, but the whole earth shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy; for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all those that dwell in the earth.

²⁶ For what is a man profited if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?

¹ ¶ Come now, Oh ye rich, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. ² Your riches are rotten, and your garments are motheaten. ³ Your gold and silver is corrupted with rust; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you and shall completely eat your flesh, as fire. Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days.

¹⁷ For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster and all the company in ships and sailors and as many as trade by sea stood afar off

²⁰ The LORD will not forgive him, but then the anger of the LORD and his jealousy shall smoke against that man, and all the curses that are written in this book shall lie upon him, and the LORD shall blot out his name from under heaven. ²¹ And the LORD shall separate him unto evil out of all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in this book of the law. ²² So that the generation to come of your children that shall rise up after you, and the stranger that shall come from a far land shall say, when they see the plagues of that land, and the sicknesses which the LORD has laid upon it, ²³ and that the whole land thereof is brimstone and salt and burning, that it is not sown, nor shall it produce anything, nor shall any grass grow therein, like in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim, which the LORD overthrew in his anger and in his wrath; ²⁴ even all Gentiles shall say, Why has the LORD done thus unto this land? What means the heat of this great anger? ²⁵ Then men shall say, Because they have forsaken the covenant of the LORD God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them forth out of the land of Egypt; ²⁶ for they went and served other gods and worshipped them, gods whom they knew not and who had not given anything unto them. ²⁷ Therefore, the anger of the LORD was kindled against this land to bring upon it all the curses that are written in this book. ²⁸ And the LORD rooted them out of their land in anger and in wrath and in great indignation and cast them into another land, as it is today.

²¹ Surely such are the dwellings of the wicked, and this is the place of him that does not know God.

¹³ This is the portion of a wicked man with God and the heritage of the violent, which they shall receive of the Almighty.

² For what reward would God give me from above and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high? ³ Is there no destruction for the wicked? And banishment for the workers of iniquity?

⁵ The LORD tries the righteous, but the wicked and he that loves violence his soul hates. ⁶ Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, with winds of whirlwinds: this shall be the portion of their cup.

³⁸ Mem Out of the mouth of the most High proceeds not evil and good?

⁵¹ and shall cut him off and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
