¹⁰ And when he was alone, the twelve that were with him asked him the parable.

²⁰ He that walketh with the wise, shall be wise: a friend of fools shall become like to them.

¹⁰ And his disciples came and said to him: Why speakest thou to them in parables? ¹¹ Who answered and said to them: Because to you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven: but to them it is not given. ¹² For he that hath, to him shall be given, and he shall abound: but he that hath not, from him shall be taken away that also which he hath. ¹³ Therefore do I speak to them in parables: because seeing they see not, and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. ¹⁴ And the prophecy of Isaias is fulfilled in them, who saith: By hearing you shall hear, and shall not understand: and seeing you shall see, and shall not perceive. ¹⁵ For the heart of this people is grown gross, and with their ears they have been dull of hearing, and their eyes they have shut: lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them. ¹⁶ But blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear. ¹⁷ For, amen, I say to you, many prophets and just men have desired to see the things that you see, and have not seen them: and to hear the things that you hear and have not heard them.

³⁶ Then having sent away the multitudes, he came into the house, and his disciples came to him, saying: Expound to us the parable of the cockle of the field.

³⁴ And without parable he did not speak unto them; but apart, he explained all things to his disciples.

¹⁷ And when he was come into the house from the multitude, his disciples asked him the parable.

⁹ And his disciples asked him what this parable might be. ¹⁰ To whom he said: To you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God; but to the rest in parables, that seeing they may not see and hearing may not understand. ¹¹ Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. ¹² And they by the way side are they that hear: then the devil cometh and taketh the word out of their heart, lest believing they should be saved. ¹³ Now they upon the rock are they who when they hear receive the word with joy: and these have no roots: for they believe for a while and in time of temptation they fall away. ¹⁴ And that which fell among thorns are they who have heard and, going their way, are choked with the cares and riches and pleasures of this life and yield no fruit. ¹⁵ But that on the good ground are they who in a good and perfect heart, hearing the word, keep it and bring forth fruit in patience.
