¹² Men groan from out of the city, and the soul of the wounded crieth out; and +God imputeth not the impiety.

¹³ And the Egyptians made the children of Israel serve with harshness; ¹⁴ and they embittered their life with hard labour in clay and bricks, and in all manner of labour in the field: all their labour with which they made them serve was with harshness.

²³ And it came to pass during those many days, that the king of Egypt died. And the children of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and cried; and their cry came up to God because of the bondage; ²⁴ and God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob;

²⁷ for that is his only covering, his garment for his skin: on what shall he lie down? And it shall come to pass, when he crieth unto me, that I will hear; for I am gracious.

¹⁶ And they put away the strange gods from among them, and served Jehovah; and his soul was grieved for the misery of Israel.

²³ If the scourge kill suddenly, he mocketh at the trial of the innocent.

⁵ Because of the oppression of the afflicted, because of the sighing of the needy, now will I arise, saith Jehovah, I will set [him] in safety, at whom they puff.

²¹ These [things] hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether as thyself: [but] I will reprove thee, and set [them] in order before thine eyes.

²⁶ For they persecute him whom *thou* hast smitten, and they talk for the sorrow of those whom thou hast wounded.

²² For I am afflicted and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.

¹ And I returned and saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and behold, the tears of the oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors was power, and they had no comforter.

¹¹ Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the children of men is fully set in them to do evil. ¹² Though a sinner do evil a hundred times, and prolong his [days], yet I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, because they fear before him;

⁵ and now, what have I here, saith Jehovah, that my people hath been taken away for nought? They that rule over them make them to howl, saith Jehovah; and continually all the day is my name scorned.

¹⁷ Ye have wearied Jehovah with your words, and ye say, Wherein have we wearied [him]? In that ye say, Every one that doeth evil is good in the sight of Jehovah, and he delighteth in them; or, Where is the God of judgment?

¹⁵ And now we hold the proud for happy; yea, they that work wickedness are built up; yea, they tempt God, and they escape.

⁴ or despisest thou the riches of his goodness, and forbearance, and long-suffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads thee to repentance? ⁵ but, according to thy hardness and impenitent heart, treasurest up to thyself wrath, in [the] day of wrath and revelation of [the] righteous judgment of God,

¹⁵ and account the longsuffering of our Lord [to be] salvation; according as our beloved brother Paul also has written to you according to the wisdom given to him,
