¹ At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?"

² and saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand."

¹⁹ Whoever then breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. ²⁰ For I tell you, that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.

²¹ "Not every one who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

²⁰ Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came to him with her sons and, kneeling down, asked something of him. ²¹ And he said to her, "What do you want?" She said to him, "Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom." ²² But Jesus answered, "You do not know what you are asking for. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?" They said to him, "We are able." ²³ He said to them, "You will indeed drink my cup, but to sit at my right or my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father." ²⁴ And when the ten heard it, they were indignant with the two brothers. ²⁵ But Jesus called them to him and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. ²⁶ Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you must be your servant. ²⁷ And whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave ²⁸ just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

¹¹ He who is greatest among you shall be your servant.

³³ And they came to Capernaum. When he was in the house, he asked them, "What were you discussing on the road?" ³⁴ But they kept silent; for on the way they had discussed with one another who was the greatest. ³⁵ And he sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, "If anyone desires to be first, he must be last of all and servant of all." ³⁶ And he took a little child, and put him in the midst of them. And taking him in his arms, he said to them, ³⁷ "Whoever receives one of these little children in my name receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me."

¹⁴ But when Jesus saw it, he was indignant and said to them, "Let the little children come to me; and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. ¹⁵ Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will not enter it."

³⁵ Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him and said, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask." ³⁶ And he said to them, "What do you want me to do for you?" ³⁷ And they said to him, "Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and the other at your left, in your glory." ³⁸ But Jesus said to them, "You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?" ³⁹ They said to him, "We are able." So Jesus said to them, "You will indeed drink the cup that I drink, and with the baptism I am baptized with you will be baptized; ⁴⁰ but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared." ⁴¹ And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant with James and John. ⁴² But Jesus called them to himself and said to them, "You know that those who are considered rulers over the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. ⁴³ But it shall not be so among you. But whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, ⁴⁴ and whoever wants to be first among you must be slave of all. ⁴⁵ For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

⁴⁶ And an argument arose among them as to which of them would be the greatest. ⁴⁷ Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a little child and set him by him, ⁴⁸ and said to them, "Whoever receives this little child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For he who is least among you all is the one who is great."

²⁴ A dispute also arose among them, which of them was to be considered the greatest. ²⁵ And he said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and those who exercise authority over them are called benefactors. ²⁶ But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the youngest, and he who leads as one who serves. ²⁷ For who is greater, one who sits at the table, or one who serves? Is it not the one who sits at the table? But I am among you as One who serves.

¹⁰ Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; outdo one another in showing honor.

³ Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.
