¹ Woe! Proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim! And decaying blossom of its stately beauty, which is at the head of the fertile ravine, drunkards for whom there is no wine!"

²⁵ He has brought back the border of Israel, from the entering in of Hamath unto the sea of the desert, according to the word of Yahweh, Elohim of Israel, that He spoke by the hand of His servant Jonah son of Amittai the prophet, who [is] of Gath-Hepher, ²⁶ for Yahweh has seen the affliction of Israel--very bitter, and there is none restrained, and there is none left, and there is no helper to Israel;" ²⁷ and Yahweh has not spoken to blot out the name of Israel from under the heavens, and saves them by the hand of Jeroboam son of Joash.

²⁹ In the days of Pekah king of Israel has Tiglath-Pileser king of Asshur come, and takes Ijon, and Abel-Beth-Maachah, and Janoah, and Kedesh, and Hazor, and Gilead, and Galilee, all the land of Naphtali, and removes them to Asshur.

¹⁰ and they capture it at the end of three years; in the sixth year of Hezekiah--it [is] the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel--has Samaria been captures, ¹¹ and the king of Asshur removes Israel to Asshur, and placed them in Halah, and in Habor [by] the river Gozan, and [in] cities of the Medes, ¹² because that they have not hearkened to the voice of Yahweh their Elohim, and transgress His covenant--all that He commanded Moses, servant of Yahweh--yea, they have not hearkened nor done [it].

⁶ And Pekah son of Remaliah slays in Judah a hundred and twenty thousand in one day (the whole [are] sons of valor), because of their forsaking Yahweh, Elohim of their fathers.

⁶ And the runners go with letters from the hand of the king and his heads, into all Israel and Judah, even according to the command of the king, saying, `O sons of Israel, turn back unto Yahweh, Elohim of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, and He does turn back unto the escaped part that is left of you from the hand of the kings of Asshur;" ⁷ and do not be like your fathers, and like your brethren, who trespassed against Yahweh, Elohim of their fathers, and He gives them to desolation, as you do see.

²⁹ Who has woe? who has uneasiness? who has quarrels? Who has deep concerns? who has gratuitous injuries? Who has bloodshot eyes?

¹¹ Woe! Early morning risers, pursuing an intoxicant! Delaying in the gloaming, wine is making them flare up."

²² Woe to masters of wine drinking, and mortals valorous in blending an intoxicant,

⁸ For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin, and in sixty five years further Ephraim shall be cracked from being a people." ⁹ And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah's son. If you are not believing, then you are not being faithful."

⁴ For ere the lad will know how to call `abi' and `ami,' borne away shall be the estate of Damascus, and the loot of Samaria, before the king of Assyria."

⁹ And the people know, all of them, Ephraim and the dweller of Samaria, who, in pride and a greatly swollen heart, are saying,

³ With their feet will they tramp the proud crown of the drunkards of Ephraim, ⁴ and its stately beauty becomes a decaying blossom, which is at the head of the fertile ravine, as its firstfruit, ere the summer, when the seer is seeing it, with it still in his palm, he is swallowing it up."

⁷ And, moreover, these by wine, do err, and by an intoxicant they stray. Priest and prophet err by an intoxicant. They are swallowed up because of the wine. They stray because of the intoxicant. They err in sight, quaver in mediation,

¹¹ and wine and grape juice shall take their heart.

⁵ The pomp of Israel answers to his face, and Israel and Ephraim are being stumbled in their depravity; moreover, Judah stumbles with them."

¹⁰ in the house of Israel. I see a horrible thing there:The prostitution of Ephraim; Israel is defiled.

⁵ On the day of our king, the chiefs start a fury; because of wine, he draws to his hand the mockers."

⁸ On pledged garments are they stretching out beside every altar, and the wine of those fined are they drinking in the house of their elohim."

¹² Yet you are giving the Nazirite wine to drink, and the prophets you instruct, saying, You shall not prophesy."

¹ Woe to the tranquil in Zion and those trusting in the mountain of Samaria!--The specified men of the first of the nations, and to them to whom the house of Israel comes."

⁶ those drinking wine in sprinkling bowls, and who are anointing with the principal oils, yet are not ill over the breaking of Joseph."
