²⁴ And there was also a dispute among them which of them is thought to be the greatest.

²⁰ Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Him with her sons, kneeling down and asking something from Him. ²¹ And He said to her, “What do you desire?” She says to Him, “Say that these two sons of mine might sit, one on Your right hand and one on Your left hand, in Your kingdom.” ²² And Jesus answering, said, “You do not know what you ask for. Are you able to drink the cup which I am about to drink?” They say to Him, “We are able.” ²³ He says to them, “Indeed you will drink My cup, but to sit on My right hand and on My left, this is not Mine to give, but for whom it has been prepared by My Father.” ²⁴ And the ten having heard this, were indignant about the two brothers.

³⁴ And they were silent, for along the road they had been discussing with one another which was greatest.

³⁷ And they said to Him, “Grant to us that we might sit, one of us at Your right hand and one at Your left hand, in Your glory.” ³⁸ And Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, and to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” ³⁹ And they said to Him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup that I drink, and you will be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized, ⁴⁰ but to sit at My right hand or at My left hand, is not Mine to give, but to those for whom it has been prepared.” ⁴¹ And having heard this, the ten began to be indignant about James and John.

⁴⁶ And an argument came up among them, which of them might be greatest.

¹⁰ devoted to one another in brotherly love, esteeming one another in honor,

⁴ Love is patient, love is kind, love is not envious, it is not boastful, it is not puffed up.

³ nothing according to self-interest or according to vain conceit, but in humility be esteeming one another surpassing themselves, ⁴ each considering not the things of themselves, but each also the things of others. ⁵ Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus:

⁵ Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, “The Spirit that He has made to dwell in us yearns with envy”? ⁶ But He gives greater grace. Therefore it says: “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

⁵ Likewise, younger ones, be subject to your elders. And all, gird on humility one to another, because, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” ⁶ Be humbled therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you in due time,
