⁴² Γρηγορεῖτε (Keep watch) οὖν (therefore), ὅτι (for) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (you know) ποίᾳ (on what) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ὁ (the) κύριος (Lord) ὑμῶν (of you) ἔρχεται (comes).

³⁶ Περὶ (Concerning) δὲ (however) τῆς (the) ἡμέρας (day) ἐκείνης (that) καὶ (and) ὥρας (hour), οὐδεὶς (no one) οἶδεν (knows), οὐδὲ (not even) οἱ (the) ἄγγελοι (angels) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens), οὐδὲ (nor) ὁ (the) Υἱός (Son), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) μόνος (only).

⁴⁴ διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) καὶ (also), ὑμεῖς (you) γίνεσθε (be) ἕτοιμοι (ready), ὅτι (for) ᾗ (in that) οὐ (not) δοκεῖτε (you expect) ὥρᾳ (hour), ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἔρχεται (comes).

¹³ Γρηγορεῖτε (Watch) οὖν (therefore), ὅτι (for) οὐκ (neither) οἴδατε (do you know) τὴν (the) ἡμέραν (day), οὐδὲ (nor) τὴν (the) ὥραν (hour).

³⁸ τότε (Then) λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Περίλυπός (Very sorrowful) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) ψυχή (soul) μου (of Me), ἕως (even to) θανάτου (death); μείνατε (remain) ὧδε (here) καὶ (and) γρηγορεῖτε (watch) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (Me).” ³⁹ Καὶ (And) προελθὼν (having gone forward) μικρὸν (a little), ἔπεσεν (He fell) ἐπὶ (upon) πρόσωπον (face) αὐτοῦ (of Him), προσευχόμενος (praying), καὶ (and) λέγων (saying), “Πάτερ (Father) μου (of Me), εἰ (if) δυνατόν (possible) ἐστιν (it is), παρελθάτω (let pass) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me) τὸ (the) ποτήριον (cup) τοῦτο (this). πλὴν (Nevertheless) οὐχ (not) ὡς (as) ἐγὼ (I) θέλω (will), ἀλλ’ (but) ὡς (as) σύ (You).” ⁴⁰ Καὶ (And) ἔρχεται (He comes) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) καὶ (and) εὑρίσκει (finds) αὐτοὺς (them) καθεύδοντας (sleeping). καὶ (And) λέγει (He says) τῷ (-) Πέτρῳ (to Peter), “Οὕτως (Thus) οὐκ (not) ἰσχύσατε (were you able) μίαν (one) ὥραν (hour) γρηγορῆσαι (to watch) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (Me)? ⁴¹ γρηγορεῖτε (Watch) καὶ (and) προσεύχεσθε (pray), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) εἰσέλθητε (you enter) εἰς (into) πειρασμόν (temptation). τὸ (The) μὲν (indeed) πνεῦμα (spirit) πρόθυμον (is willing), ἡ (-) δὲ (but) σὰρξ (the flesh) ἀσθενής (weak).”

³³ Βλέπετε (Take heed); ἀγρυπνεῖτε (watch); οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (you know) γὰρ (for) πότε (when) ὁ (the) καιρός (time) ἐστιν (is). ³⁴ Ὡς (It is like) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἀπόδημος (going on a journey), ἀφεὶς (having left) τὴν (the) οἰκίαν (house) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) δοὺς (having given) τοῖς (the) δούλοις (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him) τὴν (-) ἐξουσίαν (authority), ἑκάστῳ (to each one) τὸ (the) ἔργον (work) αὐτοῦ (of him). καὶ (And) τῷ (the) θυρωρῷ (doorkeeper) ἐνετείλατο (he commanded) ἵνα (that) γρηγορῇ (he should keep watch). ³⁵ γρηγορεῖτε (Watch) οὖν (therefore)— οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (you know) γὰρ (for) πότε (when) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) τῆς (of the) οἰκίας (house) ἔρχεται (comes), ἢ (or) ὀψὲ (at evening), ἢ (or) μεσονύκτιον (at midnight), ἢ (or) ἀλεκτοροφωνίας (when the rooster crows), ἢ (or) πρωΐ (morning) — ³⁶ μὴ (lest) ἐλθὼν (having come) ἐξαίφνης (suddenly), εὕρῃ (he should find) ὑμᾶς (you) καθεύδοντας (sleeping). ³⁷ ὃ (What) δὲ (now) ὑμῖν (to you) λέγω (I say), πᾶσιν (to all) λέγω (I say): γρηγορεῖτε (Watch)!”

³⁵ Ἔστωσαν (Let be) ὑμῶν (your) αἱ (-) ὀσφύες (waist) περιεζωσμέναι (girded about), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) λύχνοι (lamps) καιόμενοι (burning); ³⁶ καὶ (and) ὑμεῖς (you), ὅμοιοι (like) ἀνθρώποις (to men) προσδεχομένοις (waiting for) τὸν (the) κύριον (master) ἑαυτῶν (of themselves), πότε (whenever) ἀναλύσῃ (he shall return) ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) γάμων (wedding feasts), ἵνα (that) ἐλθόντος (having come) καὶ (and) κρούσαντος (having knocked), εὐθέως (immediately) ἀνοίξωσιν (they might open) αὐτῷ (to him). ³⁷ μακάριοι (Blessed are) οἱ (the) δοῦλοι (servants) ἐκεῖνοι (those), οὓς (whom) ἐλθὼν (having come), ὁ (the) κύριος (master) εὑρήσει (will find) γρηγοροῦντας (watching). ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) περιζώσεται (he will gird himself) καὶ (and) ἀνακλινεῖ (will make recline) αὐτοὺς (them), καὶ (and) παρελθὼν (having come up), διακονήσει (will serve) αὐτοῖς (them). ³⁸ κἂν (And if) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) δευτέρᾳ (second) κἂν (and if) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) τρίτῃ (third) φυλακῇ (watch) ἔλθῃ (he comes) καὶ (and) εὕρῃ (finds them) οὕτως (thus), μακάριοί (blessed) εἰσιν (are) ἐκεῖνοι (those)! ³⁹ Τοῦτο (This) δὲ (however) γινώσκετε (know), ὅτι (that) εἰ (if) ᾔδει (had known) ὁ (the) οἰκοδεσπότης (master of the house) ποίᾳ (in what) ὥρᾳ (hour) ὁ (the) κλέπτης (thief) ἔρχεται (is coming), οὐκ (not) ἂν (-) ἀφῆκεν (he would have allowed) διορυχθῆναι (to be broken into) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) αὐτοῦ (of him). ⁴⁰ καὶ (Also) ὑμεῖς (you) γίνεσθε (be) ἕτοιμοι (ready); ὅτι (for) ᾗ (in the) ὥρᾳ (hour) οὐ (not) δοκεῖτε (you expect), ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἔρχεται (comes).”

³⁶ ἀγρυπνεῖτε (Watch) δὲ (also) ἐν (at) παντὶ (every) καιρῷ (season), δεόμενοι (praying) ἵνα (that) κατισχύσητε (you may have strength) ἐκφυγεῖν (to escape) ταῦτα (these things) πάντα (all) τὰ (that) μέλλοντα (are about) γίνεσθαι (to come to pass) καὶ (and) σταθῆναι (to stand) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man).”

¹¹ Καὶ (And) τοῦτο (this), εἰδότες (knowing) τὸν (the) καιρόν (time), ὅτι (that it is the) ὥρα (hour) ἤδη (already) ὑμᾶς (for you) ἐξ (out of) ὕπνου (sleep) ἐγερθῆναι (to awaken); νῦν (now) γὰρ (for) ἐγγύτερον (nearer) ἡμῶν (is of us) ἡ (the) σωτηρία (salvation) ἢ (than) ὅτε (when first) ἐπιστεύσαμεν (we believed).

¹³ Γρηγορεῖτε (Watch you); στήκετε (stand firm) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πίστει (faith); ἀνδρίζεσθε (act like men); κραταιοῦσθε (be strong).

⁶ ἄρα (So) οὖν (then) μὴ (not) καθεύδωμεν (we should sleep) ὡς (as) οἱ (the) λοιποί (others), ἀλλὰ (but) γρηγορῶμεν (we should watch) καὶ (and) νήφωμεν (we should be sober).

⁷ Πάντων (Of all) δὲ (now) τὸ (the) τέλος (end) ἤγγικεν (has drawn near). σωφρονήσατε (Be clear-minded) οὖν (therefore), καὶ (and) νήψατε (sober) εἰς (for the purpose of) προσευχάς (prayers),

⁸ Νήψατε (Be sober-minded); γρηγορήσατε (watch). ὁ (The) ἀντίδικος (adversary) ὑμῶν (of You), διάβολος (the devil), ὡς (as) λέων (a lion) ὠρυόμενος (roaring) περιπατεῖ (prowls about), ζητῶν (seeking) τινα (whom) καταπιεῖν (to devour),

² γίνου (Be) γρηγορῶν (watching), καὶ (and) στήρισον (strengthen) τὰ (the things) λοιπὰ (that remain), ἃ (which) ἔμελλον (are about) ἀποθανεῖν (to die); οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) εὕρηκά (I have found) σου (your) ‹τὰ› (-) ἔργα (works) πεπληρωμένα (having been completed) ἐνώπιον (in the sight of) τοῦ (the) Θεοῦ (God) μου (of Me). ³ μνημόνευε (Remember) οὖν (therefore) πῶς (what) εἴληφας (you have received) καὶ (and) ἤκουσας (heard) — καὶ (and) τήρει (keep it) καὶ (and) μετανόησον (repent). ἐὰν (If) οὖν (therefore) μὴ (not) γρηγορήσῃς (you shall watch), ἥξω (I will come) ὡς (like) κλέπτης (a thief), καὶ (and) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) γνῷς (shall you know) ποίαν (at what) ὥραν (hour) ἥξω (I will come) ἐπὶ (upon) σέ (you).

¹⁵ “Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἔρχομαι (I am coming) ὡς (like) κλέπτης (a thief). μακάριος (Blessed is) ὁ (the one) γρηγορῶν (watching) καὶ (and) τηρῶν (keeping) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) γυμνὸς (naked) περιπατῇ (he should walk) καὶ (and) βλέπωσιν (they might see) τὴν (the) ἀσχημοσύνην (shame) αὐτοῦ (of him).”
