¹⁵ John testified of him, and cried, saying: This is he of whom I said: He that comes after me, is now before me, for he existed before me.

¹¹ I immerse you in water, in order to repentance; but he that comes after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will immerse you in the Holy Spirit and in fire:

¹³ Then came Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be immersed by him. ¹⁴ But John forbade him, saying: I have need to be immersed by thee, and comest thou to me? ¹⁵ But Jesus answering said to him: Permit it now; for thus it be comes us to perform fully every righteous act. Then he permitted him. ¹⁶ And after Jesus was immersed, he came up immediately from the water; and lo, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and coming upon him. ¹⁷ And lo, a voice from heaven, saying: This is my beloved Son, in whom I delight.

⁷ and he preached, saying: There comes after me One mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and loose.

¹⁶ John answered them all, saying: I indeed immerse you in water; but there comes One mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to loose; he will immerse you in the Holy Spirit and in fire.

¹ IN the beginning was the WORD, and the WORD. was with God, and the WORD was God. ² He was in the beginning with God.

⁷ This man came as a witness, to testify of the Light, that all through him might believe. ⁸ He was not the Light; but he came to testify of the Light.

²⁷ He it is, who, though he comes after me, is now before me; the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to loose.

²⁹ The next day John saw Jesus coming to him, and said: Behold the Lamb of God, that takes away the sin of the world. ³⁰ This is he of whom I said, After me comes a man who is now before me, for he existed before me. ³¹ And I knew him not; but that he might be made manifest to Israel, for this reason I have come immersing in water. ³² And John testified, saying: I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. ³³ And I knew him not; but he that sent me to immerse in water, said to me, On whom you shall see the Spirit descending and remaining, this is he that immerses in the Holy Spirit. ³⁴ And I saw, and do testify that this is the Son of God.

²⁶ And they came to John, and said to him: Rabbi, he who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you bore testimony, behold, he immerses, and all are going to him. ²⁷ John answered and said: A man can receive nothing unless it be given to him from heaven. ²⁸ You yourselves will testify for me, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him. ²⁹ He that has the bride, is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly on account of the voice of the bridegroom. This, my joy, is therefore complete. ³⁰ He must increase, but I must decrease. ³¹ He that comes from above, is over all. He that is from the earth, is from the earth, and speaks from the earth. He that comes from heaven, is over all; ³² and what he has seen and heard, this he testifies; and no one receives his testimony. ³³ He that has received his testimony has solemnly declared that God is true. ³⁴ For he whom God has sent, speaks the words of God; for God gives not the Spirit by measure to him. ³⁵ The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand. ³⁶ He that believes on the Son has eternal life. But he that believes not the Son, shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

³³ You sent to John, and he bore testimony to the truth. ³⁴ But I receive not testimony from man; yet I say these things that you may be saved. ³⁵ He was the burning and shining lamp; and you were willing, for a time, to rejoice in his light. ³⁶ But I have testimony greater than that of John; for the works which the Father has given me to finish, these very works which I do, testify concerning me, that the Father has sent me.

⁵⁸ Jesus said to them: Verily, verily I say to you, before Abraham came into being, I was.

⁵ And now, Father, glorify me with thyself, with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

⁶ who, being in the form of God, did not think it an act of robbery to be equal with God; ⁷ but he divested himself by taking the form of a servant, and being made in the likeness of men:

¹⁷ and he is before all things, and by him all things consist:

⁸ Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and to-day, and forever.

¹¹ saying: What you see, write in a book, and send to the seven churches; to Ephesus, and to Smyrna, and to Pergamos, and to Thyatira, and to Sardis, and to Philadelphia, and to Laodicea.

¹⁷ And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead; and he laid his right hand upon me, saying: Fear not, I am the First and the Last, ¹⁸ and I am he that lives; and I was dead, and be hold, I am alive from age to age: and I have the keys of hades and of death.

⁸ And to the angel of the church in Smyrna, write: These things says the First and the Last, who was dead, and is alive:
