Five days later, the high priest Ananias came down with some of the elders and an attorney named Tertullus, and they presented their case against Paul before the governor.
When Paul had been called in, Tertullus opened the prosecution: “Because of you, we have enjoyed a lasting peace, and your foresight has brought improvements to this nation.
In every way and everywhere, most excellent Felix, we acknowledge this with all gratitude.
But so as not to detain you unduly, I would request that you be kind enough to hear us briefly.
We have found this man to be a nuisance, stirring up dissension among the Jews all over the world. He is a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes,
and he even tried to desecrate the temple; so we seized him.
By examining him yourself you will be able to learn the truth about all these charges of which we accuse him."
The Jews supported his accusations by asserting that these things were true.
When the governor had motioned for him to speak, Paul replied: "Realizing that for many years you have been a judge over this nation, I cheerfully make my defense.
Since you can easily verify that no more than twelve days ago I went up to Jerusalem to worship.
Yet my accusers did not find me debating with anyone in the temple or riling up a crowd in the synagogues or in the city.
and they cannot prove to you the charges they are now bringing against me.
