Thomson⁽ⁱ⁾ ¹⁸ Though Juda did not take possession of Gaza, nor the borders thereof, nor of Ascalon nor its borders, nor of Akkaron, nor its borders, nor of Azotus, nor the grounds about it; ¹⁹ yet the Lord was with him, and he took possession of the mountain, for they were not enabled to drive out the inhabitants of the vale, because Rechab dissuaded them.

Also Judah.There is the following remarkable variation here in the Septuagint: [Kai ouk ekl\u65533 ronom\u65533 sen Ioudas t\u65533 n Gazan, oude ta horia aut\u65533 s; oude t\u65533 n Askal\u65533 na, oude ta horia aut\u65533 s; kai t\u65533 n Akkar\u65533 n, oude ta horia aut\u65533 s; t\u65533 n Az\u65533 ton, oude ta perisporia aut\u65533 s.] "But Judah did not possess Gaza, nor the coasts thereof; nor Askelon, nor the coasts thereof; nor Ekron, nor the coasts thereof; nor Ashdod, nor the coasts thereof." Procopius and Augustine read the same; and Josephus (Ant. 1. v. c. 2) says that the Israelites only took Askelon and Ashdod, but not Gaza or Ekron; and from ch. 3:3, and the whole succeeding history, it appears that these cities were not in the possession of the Israelites, but of the Philistines.
