So he arose and went. And lo! a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch, a grandee of Candace, the queen of the Ethiopians, who was her high treasurer, who had come to Jerusalem to worship,
and was on his return, was sitting in a chariot and reading the prophet Esaias.
And the Spirit said to Philip, Go near and keep close to that chariot.
So Philip ran close up and heard him reading the prophet Esaias. Whereupon he said, Dost thou understand what thou art reading?
To which he replied, How can I unless some one guide me? Then he invited Philip to come up and take a seat with him.
Now the passage of scripture which he was reading was this, "He was led as a sheep to slaughter; and as a lamb before its shearer is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.
In his humiliation his legal trial is taken away. Who will declare his manner of life? Because his life is taken from the earth.
And the eunuch addressing Philip, said, Of whom, I pray thee, doth the prophet say this? Of himself or of some other person?
Then Philip opened His mouth, and beginning with this scripture, told him the glad tidings of Jesus.
And as they continued the journey, they came to a certain water. Whereupon the eunuch said, Behold! here is water. What hindereth my being baptized?
And Philip said, If thou believest with thy whole heart, it may be done. To which he replied, I believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God.
Then he ordered the chariot to stop. And they both went down into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
And when they came up out of the water, the spirit of the Lord conveyed Philip away. And the eunuch saw him no more. For he proceeded on in his journey rejoicing,
and Philip was found at Azotus. And passing on he proclaimed the glad tidings in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.
