Riverside⁽ⁱ⁾ ¹⁸ The birth of Jesus was in this way: His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, but before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. ¹⁹ Joseph, her husband, being an upright man, and yet not willing to make her a public example, resolved to dismiss her privately. ²⁰ But while he was thinking this over, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for what has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. ²¹ She will bear a son and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." ²² All this happened in fulfillment of what the Lord had spoken through the prophet: ²³ "Behold the virgin will conceive and will bear a son, and they will call his name Immanuel" (which means, God is with us). ²⁴ When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took his wife to his home. ²⁵ But he did not live with her as a husband until she had borne a son. He called his name Jesus.
