Riverside⁽ⁱ⁾ ²⁷ Whoever does not take up his own cross and come after me cannot be a disciple of mine. ²⁸ For which of you wishing to build a tower does not first sit down and compute the cost, whether he has enough to complete it, ²⁹ for fear that, after he has laid the foundation and cannot finish it, all the onlookers may begin to ridicule him, ³⁰ saying, 'This man began to build and could not finish.' ³¹ Or what king going to meet another king in war does not first sit down and deliberate whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who is coming against him with twenty thousand? ³² If not, while the other is still far off he sends an embassy and asks for conditions of peace. ³³ Just so no one of you who does not renounce all that he has can be a disciple of mine. ³⁴ Salt is good, but if the salt becomes tasteless, with what shall it be seasoned?
