Matthew(i)
1 al the people gathered themselues together as one man vpon the strete before the Watergate, and sayde vnto Esdras the scrybe, that he shulde fetche the boke of the lawe of Moses, whiche the Lorde commaunded to Israell.
2 And Esdras the prieste broughte the lawe before the congregacyon bothe of men and wemen, and of all that coulde vnderstande it, vpon the fyrste daye of the seuenthe moneth,
3 and red therein in the strete that is before the watergate, from the mornynge vntyll the noone daye before men and wemen, and suche as coulde vnderstand it: and the eares of all the people were inclined vnto the boke of the lawe.
4 And Esdras the scrybe stode vpon an hye pulpyte of woode, whiche they had made for the preachyng, and besyde hym stode Mathathiah, Sema, Ananiah, Vriah, Helkiah, and Maaseiah, on hys ryghte hande: and on hys lefte hande stode Phadaiah, Misael, Melchiah, Hasum, Hasebadanah, Zachary and Mosolam.
5 And Esdras opened the boke before all the people, for he stode aboue all the people. And when he opened it, all the people stode vp.
6 And Esdras praysed the Lorde the greate God. And all the people answered Amen, Amen, with theyr handes vp, & bowed them selues, & worshipped the Lorde with theyr faces to the grounde.
7 And Iesua, Baani, Serabiah, Iamin, Acuba, Sebathai, Hodaiah, Maasiah, Celita, Azariah, Iozabed, Hanan, Phalaiah, and the Leuites, caused the people to geue hede vnto the law, & the people stode in theyr place.
8 And they red in the boke of the lawe of God distinctly & planely, so the men vnderstode the thinge that was red.
9 And Nehemiah (whyche is Hathirsatha) & Esdras the prest and scrybe, and the Leuites that caused the people to take hede, sayde vnto all the people: thys daye is holy vnto the Lord youre God: be not ye sory therfore, & wepe not. For all the people wepte when they hearde the wordes of the lawe.
10 Therfore sayde he vnto them: go youre waye, and eate the fat, and dryncke the swete, and sende parte vnto them also that haue not prepared them selues: for this daye is holye vnto our Lorde, be not ye sory therfore: for the ioye of the Lorde is youre strength.
11 And the Leuites stilled al the people, and sayde: holde youre peace for the daye is holye, vexe not ye youre selues.
12 And all the people wente theyr waye to eate and drincke, and to sende parte vnto other, and to make great myrth, because they had vnderstande the wordes that were declared vnto them.
13 And on the nexte daye were geathered together the chefe fathers amonge all the people and the prestes and Leuites, vnto Esdras the scrybe, that he shulde teach them the wordes of the lawe.
14 And they founde written in the lawe how that the Lorde had commaunded by Moses that the chyldren of Israel shulde dwell in bothes in the feaste of the seuenth moneth.
15 And so they caused it be declared and proclaimed in all theyr cytyes, and at Ierusalem, sayinge: go vp vnto the mount and fetche Olyue braunches, Pynebraunches, Myrtbraunches, Palmebraunches, & braunches of thicke trees, to make bothes as it is wrytten.
16 And the people wente vp, and fet them, & made them bothes, euerye one vpon the rofe of hys house, and in theyr courtes, and in the courtes of the house of GOD, and in the strete by the Watergate, and in the strete by porte Ephraim.
17 And all the congregacyon of them that were come agayne oute of the captyuyte, made bothes, and dwelte therin: for sence the tyme of Iosua the sonne of Nun vnto thys daye, had not the chyldren of Israell done so, and there was verye greate gladnesse.
18 And euerye daye from the fyrste daye vnto the last, red he in the boke of the lawe of God. And seuen dayes helde they the feaste, & on the eyght daye of the gatherynge together, accordynge vnto the maner.
