Matthew⁽ⁱ⁾ ²⁷ For the sonne of man shall come in the glorye of hys father, wyth hys aungels: & then shall he rewarde euery man accordyng to his dedes. ²⁸ Verely I saye vnto you, some there be among them that here stande, whiche shall not taste of death, till they shall haue sene the sonne of man come in hys kyngdom. ¹⁷ ¹ And after .vi. dayes Iesus toke Peter and Iames and Ihon his brother, and broughte them vp into an hygh mountayne oute of the waye, ² and was transfigured before them, and his face did shyne as the sunne and hys clothes were as whyte as the light: ³ & behold there appeared vnto theim Moyses & Helyas, talkyng with hym. ⁴ Then aunswered Peter and sayd to Iesus: master here is good beyng for vs. If thou wilt, let vs make here thre tabernacles, one for the, & one for Moses, and one for Helyas. ⁵ Whyle he yet speake, beholde a bryght cloude shadowed theim. And beholde there came a voyce out of the cloude, sayinge: this is my deare sonne, in whome I delite heare hym. ⁶ And when the disciples hearde that, they fell on theyr faces and were soore afrayed. ⁷ And Iesus came and touched them, and saide: arise and be not afrayed. ⁸ And when they loked vp, they sawe no man saue Iesus onely. ⁹ And as they came doune from the mountayne, Iesus charged them sayinge: se that ye shewe the vision to noman, vntyll the sonne of man be rysen agayne from death. ¹⁰ And hys disciples axed of hym saying: Why then say the Scribes, that Helyas must first come? ¹¹ Iesus aunswered and sayde vnto them Helias shall first come and restore all thynges. ¹² And I say vnto you that Helyas is come already, and they knewe hym not: but haue done vnto hym whatsoeuer they lusted. In lykewise shal also the sonne of man suffer of them. ¹³ Then the disciples perceiued that he spake vnto them of Ihon Baptist. ¹⁴ And when they were come to the people, there came to hym a certayne man, and kneled doune to hym, and sayde: ¹⁵ Master haue mercy on my sonne for he is francticke, and is sore vexed. For ofte tymes he falleth into the fire: and ofte into the water. ¹⁶ And I broughte hym to thy disciples, and thei could not heale him. ¹⁷ Iesus aunswered and sayde: O generation faythles and croked: howe longe shall I be wt you? how longe shal I suffre you? bryng him hydder to me. ¹⁸ And Iesus rebuked the deuel, & he came out of hym. And the chylde was healed euen that same houre. ¹⁹ Then came the disciples to Iesus secretly and sayd: Why coulde not we cast hym out? ²⁰ Iesus sayd vnto them: Because of your vnbelefe. For I saye verely vnto you: if ye hadde faith as a grayn of a mustard seede, ye should say vnto thys mountayne, remoue hence too yonder place, and it shoulde remoue, neyther shoulde any thyng be impossible for you too do. ²¹ Howe be it this kynde goeth not out, but by prayer and fastynge. ²² As they passed the tyme in Galile, Iesus sayde vnto them: the sonne of man shalbe betrayed into the handes of men, ²³ and they shall kyll hym, and the thyrde daye he shall ryse agayne. And they sorowed greatly. ²⁴ And when they were come to Capernaum they that were wont to gadre poll money, came to Peter and sayde: Doeth your master paye tribute? ²⁵ He sayd: yea. And when he was come into the house. Iesus spake fyrst to him, sayinge: What thinkest thou Simon? of whom do the kynges of the earth take tribute or pol money? of their chyldren, or of straungers? ²⁶ Peter sayde vnto hym: of straungers. Then sayde Iesus vnto hym agayne: Then are the chyldren fre. ²⁷ Neuerthelesse, lest we should offende them: go to the sea and caste in thyne angel, and take the fish that first cometh vp: & when thou hast opened hys mouth, thou shalt fynde a pece of twenty pence: that take and paye for me and the. ¹⁸ ¹ The same tyme the disciples came vnto Iesus sayinge: who is the greatest in the kyngdom of heauen ² Iesus called a chylde vnto hym, and set hym in the middes of them: ³ and sayde. Verely I saye vnto you: excepte ye tourne, and become as chyldren, ye cannot enter into the kyngedome of heauen. ⁴ Who soeuer therfore humble hym selfe as thys chylde, the same is the greatest in the kyngedom of heauen. ⁵ And whosoeuer receyueth suche a chylde in my name, receyueth me. ⁶ But whosoeuer offende one of these litelone, whych beleue in me: it were better for hym, that a milstone were hanged about his necke, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. ⁷ Wo be vnto the worlde because of offences. Howe be it, it cannot be auoyded but that offences shall be geuen. Neuerthelesse woo be to the man, by whome the offence cometh. ⁸ Wherfore if thy hande or thy fote offende the, cut hym of and cast hym from the. It is better for the to enter into lyfe halte or maymed, rather then thou shouldest hauinge two handes or two fete, be cast into euerlastynge fyre. ⁹ And if also thyne eye offende the, plucke hym out and cast hym from the. It is better for the to entre into lyfe with one eye, then hauyng two eyes to be cast into hell fyre. ¹⁰ Se that ye not dispise not one of these litelones. For I saye vnto you, that in heauen their aungels alwaies behold the face of my father which is in heauen. ¹¹ Yea, and the sonne of man is come to saue that whych is lost. ¹² Howe thynke ye? If a man haue an hundred shepe, & one of them be gone astray, doth he not leaue nynty and nyne in the mountaynes, and go & seke that one whych is gone astraye. ¹³ If it happen that he fynde him, verely I say vnto you: he reioyseth more of that shepe, then of the nyntye and nyne, which went not astray. ¹⁴ Euen so it is not the wil of your father in heauen, that one of these litelons shoulde perish. ¹⁵ Moreouer, if thy brother trespase agaynst the, Go and tell hym hys fault betwene hym and the alone. If he heare the, thou hast wonne thy brother. ¹⁶ But if he heare the not, then take yet with the one or two, that in the mouthe of two or thre witnesses, all thynges may be stablished. ¹⁷ If he heare not them, tell it vnto the congregacion. If he heare not the congregacion, take hym as a Heathen man, & as a publican. ¹⁸ Verely I saye vnto you, whatsoeuer ye bynde on earth, shalbe bounde in heauen. And whatsoeuer ye lowse on erth, shalbe lowsed in heauen. ¹⁹ Agayne I say vnto you, that if two of you shall agre in earth vpon any maner thyng whatsoeuer they shall desire: it shalbe geuen them of my father whyche is in heauen. ²⁰ For where two or thre are gathered together in my name, there am I in the middes of them. ²¹ Then came Peter to hym, & sayde: master howe ofte shall I forgeue my brother, if he synne agaynst me, seuen tymes? ²² Iesus sayde vnto hym: I say not vnto the seuen times: but seuenty times seuen tymes. ²³ Therefore is the kyngedom of heauen lykened vnto a certayne kyng, whithe woulde take a countes of hys seruauntes. ²⁴ And when he had begon to recken: one was broughte vnto hym: which ought hym ten thousand talentes, ²⁵ whome because he had noughte to paye, hys master commaunded him to be solde, and his wyfe, and hys chyldren, and all that he had, & payment to be made. ²⁶ The seruaunt fel doune and besought hym sayinge: Syr geue me respyte, and I will paye it euery whyt. ²⁷ Then had the Lord pitye on that seruaunt, & lowsed him and forgaue hym the dette. ²⁸ And the sayd seruaunt went out & found one of hys felowes, which ought him an hundred pence, & layed handes on him, & toke hym by the throote sayinge: paye me that thou owest. ²⁹ And hys felowe fell doune & besoughte hym, saying: haue pacience with me, and I wil pay the all. ³⁰ But he woulde not, but wente and cast hym into pryson till he shoulde pay the det. ³¹ When hys other felowes sawe what was done, they were very sory, and came and told vnto theyr Lord all that had happened. ³² Then his Lorde called hym, and sayde vnto hym. O euill seruaunt I forgaue the al that det, because thou praiest me: ³³ was it not mete also that thou shouldest haue had compassion on thy felow, euen as I had pitie on the? ³⁴ And his lord was wroth and deliuered him to the iaylers, til he should paye all that was due to hym. ³⁵ So likewyse shal my heauenly father do vnto you except ye forgeue with your hertes, eache one to hys brother theyr trespasses. ¹⁹ ¹ And it came to passe when Iesus had finished those sayinges, he gat him from Galile, and came into the coostes of Iury beyonde Iordan, ² and much people folowed hym, and he healed them there. ³ Then came vnto him the Pharises, tempting him, & saying to hym: Is it lawful for a man to put away his wyfe for all maner of causes? ⁴ He aunswered and sayde vnto them: Haue ye not reade, howe that he whiche made man at the beginnyng, made them man and woman ⁵ and sayd: for this thynge, shall a man leaue father and mother & cleaue vnto his wyfe, & thei twayne but one flesh. ⁶ Wherefore now are they not twaine, but one fleshe. Let not man therefore put a sunder, that whiche God hath couppled together. ⁷ Then sayd they to him: why did Moyses commaund to geue a testimoniall of diuorcement, & to put her awaye? ⁸ He sayde vnto them: Moyses because of the hardnes of youre hertes suffred you to put away your wyfes: But from the beginning it was not so. ⁹ I say therfore vnto you, whosoeuer putteth awaye hys wyfe, (except it he for fornicacion) & marieth another, breaketh wedloke. And whosoeuer maryeth her, which is diuorced, doth commit aduoutry. ¹⁰ Then sayde his disciples to him: if the matter be so betwene man and wyfe, then is it not good to marye. ¹¹ He sayde vnto them: all men can not awaye with that sayinge, saue they to whome it is geuen. ¹² There are chaste whiche were so borne out of theyr mothers bealy. And there are chaste whiche be made of men. And there be chast which haue made them selues chaste for the kyngdom of heauens sake. He that can take it let hym take it. ¹³ Then were brought to him iong chyldren, that he should put his handes on them & praye. And the disciples rebuked them. ¹⁴ But Iesus sayd suffer the chyldren and forbid them not to come to me: for of suche is the kyngdome of heauen. ¹⁵ And when he had put his handes on them he departed thence. ¹⁶ And beholde one came and saide to him: good master, what good thinge shall I do, that I maye haue eternall lyfe? ¹⁷ He sayde to him: why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, & that is God. But if thou wilt enter into lyfe, kepe the commaundementes, ¹⁸ The other sayd to him: Which And Iesus sayde: Breake no wedloke, kyll not, steale not: beare not false witues, ¹⁹ honoure father and mother, and loue thy neyghboure as thy selfe. ²⁰ And the iong man sayd vnto him: I haue obserued all these thynges from my youth, what lacke I yet? ²¹ And Iesus sayde vnto him, if thou wilt be perfecte go and sell that thou haste, and geue it to the poore, and thou shalt haue treasure in heauen, and come and folowe me. ²² When the ionge man hearde that saying: he went away mournynge. For he had great possessions. ²³ Then Iesus sayd vnto his disciples: Verely I saye vnto you: it is harde for a riche man to enter into the kyngdom of heauen. ²⁴ And moreouer I saye vnto you, it is easier for a Camel to go thorow the eye of a nedle, then for a ryche man to entre into the kyngdom of God ²⁵ When his disciples hearde that, thei were exceadingly amased saying: who then can be saued? ²⁶ Iesus beheld them and sayde vnto them: with men this is impossible, but with God al thynges are possible. ²⁷ Then aunswered Peeter and sayde vnto hym: Beholde we haue forsaken all and folowed the, what shall we haue? ²⁸ Iesus sayde vnto them: Verely I saye vnto you: when the sonne of man shall sit in the seate of hys maiestie, yea, which folow me in the second geueracion, shall sitte also vpon .xij. seates, and iudge the .xij. tribes of Israel. ²⁹ And whosoeuer forsaketh houses, or brethren, or systers, other father or mother, or wyfe or chyldren, or landes, for my names sake, the same shal receyue an .C. folde, & shal enherite euerlasting life. ³⁰ Many that are firste shall be last, and the last shalbe the first. ²⁰ ¹ For the kyngedom of heauen is lyke vnto an housholder, which went out early in the mornynge to hyre labourers into hys vyneyarde. ² And he agreed with the labourers for a peny a daye, and sent them into hys vyneyarde. ³ And he went out about the .iij. houre, and saw other standing ydel in the market place, ⁴ and sayd vnto them, go ye also into my vineyard: and whatsoeuer is right, I wil geue you. And they went theyr waye. ⁵ Agayn he went out about the sixt and nynth houre and did likewise. ⁶ And he went out about the eleuenth houre, and founde other standynge ydel, and sayde vnto theim: Why stande ye here all the day ydell? ⁷ They sayde vnto hym: because no man hath hyred vs. He sayde to them go ye also into my vyneyarde, & whatsoeuer is right, that shall ye receyue. ⁸ When euen was come, the Lorde of the vineyarde sayde vnto hys Stewarde: call the labourers, and geue them their hyer, beginning at the laste, tyll thou come to the first. ⁹ And they whiche were hyred about the eleuenth houre, came and receyued euery man a peny. ¹⁰ Then came the first, supposing that they should receyue more, and they lykewise receyued euery man a peny. ¹¹ And when they had receyued it, they murmured agaynst the good man of the house ¹² saying: These laste haue wrought but one houre, and thou haste made theym equall vnto vs whiche haue borne the burthen, and heat of the daye. ¹³ He aunswered to one of them, saying: frende I do the no wrong: diddest thou not agre with me for a peny? ¹⁴ Take that which is thy duety, and go thy waye, I will geue vnto thys laste as muche as to the. ¹⁵ Is it not lawful for me to do as me lusteth with myne owne? Is thyne eye euel because I am good? ¹⁶ So the laste shalbe firste, and the first shalbe laste. For many are called, and few be chosen. ¹⁷ And Iesus ascended to Ierusalem and toke the .xij. disciples a parte in the way, and sayde to them: ¹⁸ Beholde we go vp to Ierusalem, and the sonne of man shalbe betrayed vnto the chief priestes and vnto the scribes: and they shal condemne hym to death, ¹⁹ and shall deliuer hym to the gentels, to be mocked, to be scourged, & to be crucified, and the thirde daye he shall rise agayne. ²⁰ Then came to him the mother of Zebedes chyldren with her sonnes, worshippyng hym and desiring a certayn thinge of hym. ²¹ And he saide vnto her: what wilt thou haue? She said vnto hym: Graunt that these my two sonnes maye sitte, the one on thy right hande, and the other on the lift hande in thy kyngdome ²² Iesus aunswered and sayde: Ye wotte not what ye are. Are ye able to drinke of the cup that I shall drynke of: and to be baptised with the baptisme that I shalbe baptised wt? ²³ They aunswered to hym: that we are. And he sayde vnto them: Ye shall drynke of my cup, & shal be baptised with the baptisme that I shalbe baptised with. But to sit on my right hande and on my lifte hande, is not myne to geue: but to them for whome it is prepared of my father. ²⁴ And when the ten hearde this, they disdayned at the two brethren. ²⁵ But Iesus called them vnto hym and sayd: Ye know that the Lordes of the gentils haue domination ouer them. And they that are great, exercyse power ouer them. ²⁶ It shall not be so amonge you. But whosoeuer wil be great amonge you, let hym be your minister, ²⁷ and whosoeuer wil be chief, let hym be your seruaunt, ²⁸ euen as the sonne of man came not to be minnistred vnto, but to minister, and to geue his life for the redempcion of many. ²⁹ And as they departed from Hiericho, much people folowed hym. ³⁰ And beholde two blynd men sitting by the way syde, when thei heard Iesus passe by, cryed saying: Thou Lord the sonne of Dauid haue mercy on vs. ³¹ And the people rebuked theym: because they shoulde holde their peace. But they cried the more sayinge: Haue mercy on vs thou Lord which art the sonne of Dauid. ³² Then Iesus stode styll, & called them, and sayde: What will ye that I shoulde do to you? ³³ Thei sayde to him: Lorde, that our eyes maye be opened. ³⁴ Iesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes. And immediatly their eyes receiued sight. And thei folowed him. ²¹ ¹ When they drewe nygh vnto Ierusalem, and were come too Bethphage, to mount Oliuete: then sent Iesus two of his disciples, ² sayinge to them. Go into the towne that lyeth ouer agaynste you, and anone ye shal fynde an Asse bound, & her colte with her: lose them, and bringe them vnto me. ³ And if any man saye ought vnto you, saye ye that the Lord hath nede of them: and streyght waye he will let them go. ⁴ All this was done, to fulfill that whiche was spoken by the Prophet saying: ⁵ Tel ye the doughter of Sion: beholde thyne kyng cometh vnto the meke, and sitting vpon an Asse and a colte, the fote of an Asse vsed to the yooke. ⁶ The disciples went and did as Iesus commaunded them, ⁷ & brought the Asse and the colte, and put on theym theyr clothes, and set him thereon. ⁸ And many of the people spred their garmentes in the way. Other cut doune braunches from the trees, and strawed them in the waye. ⁹ Moreouer the people that went before, and they also that came after, cryed sayinge: Hosanna to the sonne of Dauid. Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the Lorde Hosanna in the hyest. ¹⁰ And when he was come into Ierusalem all the cytye was moued sayinge: who is thys? ¹¹ And the people sayd: this is Iesus the prophet of Nazareth a citie of Galile. ¹² And Iesus wente into the temple of God, and caste out all them that soulde and bought in the temple, & ouerthrewe the tables of the money chaungers, & the seates of them that solde doues, ¹³ and sayde to them: It is writen, my house shalbe called the house of prayer. But ye haue made it a denne of theues. ¹⁴ And the blind and the halt came to hym in the temple and he healed them. ¹⁵ When the chiefe priestes sawe the marueylles that he dyd, and the chyldren criynge in the temple and saying: Hosanna to the sonne of Dauid, they disdayned, ¹⁶ and sayde vnto hym: hearest thou what these saye? Iesus sayde to them, yea. Haue ye neuer reade, of the mouth of babes and suckelynges thou hast ordeyned prayse? ¹⁷ And he lefte them, and wente out of the cytye vnto Bethanye, and had hys abydynge there. ¹⁸ In the mornynge as he retourned into the cytie agayn, he hungred, ¹⁹ and spyed a fygge tree in the waye, and came to it, and found nothynge thereon, but leaues onely, and sayed to it, neuer frute growe on the hence forwardes. And anone the figge tre wyddered away ²⁰ And when hys disciples sawe that, they marueyled sayinge: How sone is the fygge tree wyddered awaye? ²¹ Iesus answered, and sayd vnto them: Verelye I say vnto you: if ye shal haue fayth, and shall not dout ye shall not onely do that which I haue done to the fygge tree but also yf ye shall saye vnto thys mountayne, take thy selfe awaye and cast thy selfe into the sea it shall be done. ²² And whatsoeuer ye shall axe in prayer (yf ye beleue) ye shall receyue it. ²³ And when he was come into the temple, the chiefe Priestes and the elders of that people came vnto hym as he was teachynge, and sayde. By what auctoritie doest thou these thynges and who gaue the thys power? ²⁴ Iesus answered, and sayed vnto them: I also wil axe of you a certayne questyon, whiche yf ye assoyle me, I in lyke wyse wyll tell you by what authoritie I do these thynges. ²⁵ The baptisme of Iohn whence was it: from heauen or of men? Then they reasoned amonge themselues, sayinge: yf we shall saye from heauen, he wyll laye vnto vs: why dyd ye not then beleue hym? ²⁶ But and yf we shall saye of men, then feare we the people. For all men helde Iohn as a Prophete. ²⁷ And they answered Iesus and sayed: we cannot tell. And he lykewyse sayd vnto them: neyther tell I you by what authoritie I do these thynges. ²⁸ What saye ye to thys? A certayne man had two sonnes, and came to the elder and sayde: sonne go and worke to daye in my vyneyarde. ²⁹ He answered and sayde, I wyll not: but after warde repented and wente. ³⁰ Then came he to the seconde, and sayed lykewyse. And he answered and sayed: I wyll syr: yet wente not. ³¹ Whether of them twayne dyd the wyll of the father? And they sayde vnto hym: the fyrst. Iesus sayde vnto them: verelye I saye vnto you, that the Publycans and the harlotes shall come into the kyngedome of God before you. ³² For Iohn came vnto you in the waye of ryghtuousnes, and ye beleued hym not. But the Publicans and the harlotes beleued hym. And yet ye (thoughe ye sawe it) were not yet moued wyth repentaunce, that ye myght afterwarde haue beleued hym. ³³ Herken another similitude. There was a certayne housholder, which planted a vyneyard, and hedged it rounde aboute and made a wynepresse in it, and buylt a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a straunge countrey. ³⁴ And when the tyme of the frute drewe neare, he sente hys seruauntes to the husbandmen to receyue the fruytes of it. ³⁵ And the husbandmen caughte hys seruauntes and bet one, kylled another, and stoned another. ³⁶ Agayne he sent other seruauntes, mo then the fyrste, and they serued them lykewyse. ³⁷ But last of all, he sent vnto them hys owne sonne, sayinge: they wyll feare my sonne. ³⁸ But when the husbandmen sawe the sonne, they sayde amonge them selues. Thys is the heyre: come let vs kyll hym, and let vs take hys enheritaunce to oure selues. ³⁹ And they caughte hym and thruste him out of the vyneyard, and slewe hym. ⁴⁰ When the Lorde of the vyneyard cometh, what wyll he do with those husbandmen? ⁴¹ They sayed vnto hym: he wyll cruellye destroye those euyll persons, and wyll let out hys vyneyarde vnto other husbandmen, which shall delyuer hym the frute at tymes conuenient. ⁴² Iesus sayde vnto them: dyd ye neuer reade in the scriptures. The stone which the buylders refused, the same is set in the principall parte of the corner: thys was the Lordes doynge, and it is meruelous in oure eyes. ⁴³ Therfore saye I vnto you the kyngdome of God shalbe taken from you, and shalbe gyuen to the gentyles, whiche shall brynge forth the frutes of it. ⁴⁴ And whosoeuer shall fall ou thys stone, he shalbe broken, but on whosoeuer it shall fall vpon, it wyll grynde hym to powder. ⁴⁵ And when the chiefe priestes and pharyses hearde these similitudes, they perceyued that he spake of them. ⁴⁶ And they wente aboute to laye handes on hym, but they feared the people, because they toke hym as a Prophete.
