BIB(i) 1 Ἐν (At) ἐκείνῳ (that) τῷ (-) καιρῷ (time) ἐπορεύθη (went) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) τοῖς (on the) σάββασιν (Sabbaths) διὰ (through) τῶν (the) σπορίμων (grainfields), οἱ (-) δὲ (and) μαθηταὶ (the disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐπείνασαν (were hungry), καὶ (and) ἤρξαντο (they began) τίλλειν (to pluck the) στάχυας (heads of grain) καὶ (and) ἐσθίειν (to eat). 2 οἱ (-) δὲ (And) Φαρισαῖοι (the Pharisees), ἰδόντες (having seen), εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ἰδοὺ (Behold), οἱ (the) μαθηταί (disciples) σου (of You) ποιοῦσιν (are doing) ὃ (what) οὐκ (not) ἔξεστιν (it is lawful) ποιεῖν (to do) ἐν (on) σαββάτῳ (Sabbath).” 3 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Οὐκ (Not) ἀνέγνωτε (you have read) τί (what) ἐποίησεν (did) Δαυὶδ (David) ὅτε (when) ἐπείνασεν (he was hungry), καὶ (and) οἱ (those) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him) — 4 πῶς (how) εἰσῆλθεν (he entered) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) ἄρτους (loaves) τῆς (of the) προθέσεως (presentation) ἔφαγον (they ate), ὃ (which) οὐκ (not) ἐξὸν (lawful) ἦν (it was) αὐτῷ (for him) φαγεῖν (to eat), οὐδὲ (nor) τοῖς (for those) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) τοῖς (for the) ἱερεῦσιν (priests) μόνοις (only)? 5 Ἢ (Or) οὐκ (not) ἀνέγνωτε (have you read) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law), ὅτι (that) τοῖς (on the) σάββασιν (Sabbath) οἱ (the) ἱερεῖς (priests) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple) τὸ (the) σάββατον (Sabbath) βεβηλοῦσιν (profane), καὶ (and) ἀναίτιοί (guiltless) εἰσιν (are)? 6 λέγω (I say) δὲ (however) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) τοῦ (the) ἱεροῦ (temple) μεῖζόν (a greater than) ἐστιν (is) ὧδε (here). 7 Εἰ (If) δὲ (however) ἐγνώκειτε (you had known) τί (what) ἐστιν (is), ‘Ἔλεος (Mercy) θέλω (I desire) καὶ (and) οὐ (not) θυσίαν (sacrifice),’ οὐκ (not) ἂν (-) κατεδικάσατε (you would have condemned) τοὺς (the) ἀναιτίους (guiltless). 8 κύριος (Lord) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) τοῦ (of the) σαββάτου (Sabbath) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (of) ἀνθρώπου (Man).” 9 Καὶ (And) μεταβὰς (having departed) ἐκεῖθεν (from there), ἦλθεν (He went) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) συναγωγὴν (synagogue) αὐτῶν (of them). 10 καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), ἄνθρωπος (a man) χεῖρα (a hand) ἔχων (having) ξηράν (withered). καὶ (And) ἐπηρώτησαν (they asked) αὐτὸν (Him), λέγοντες (saying), “Εἰ (Is) ἔξεστιν (it lawful) τοῖς (on the) σάββασιν (Sabbaths) θεραπεῦσαι (to heal)?” — ἵνα (so that) κατηγορήσωσιν (they might accuse) αὐτοῦ (Him). 11 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τίς (What) ἔσται (will there be) ἐξ (among) ὑμῶν (you) ἄνθρωπος (man), ὃς (who) ἕξει (will have) πρόβατον (sheep) ἕν (one), καὶ (and) ἐὰν (if) ἐμπέσῃ (falls) τοῦτο (it) τοῖς (on the) σάββασιν (Sabbaths) εἰς (into) βόθυνον (a pit), οὐχὶ (not) κρατήσει (will he take hold of) αὐτὸ (it) καὶ (and) ἐγερεῖ (will raise it up)? 12 πόσῳ (How much) οὖν (therefore) διαφέρει (is more valuable) ἄνθρωπος (a man) προβάτου (than a sheep)! ὥστε (Therefore) ἔξεστιν (it is lawful) τοῖς (on the) σάββασιν (Sabbaths) καλῶς (good) ποιεῖν (to do).” 13 Τότε (Then) λέγει (He says) τῷ (to) ἀνθρώπῳ (the man), “Ἔκτεινόν (Stretch out) σου (your) τὴν (-) χεῖρα (hand).” καὶ (And) ἐξέτεινεν (he stretched it out), καὶ (and) ἀπεκατεστάθη (it was restored), ὑγιὴς (sound) ὡς (as) ἡ (the) ἄλλη (other). 14 ἐξελθόντες (Having gone out) δὲ (now), οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) συμβούλιον (a counsel) ἔλαβον (held) κατ’ (against) αὐτοῦ (Him), ὅπως (how) αὐτὸν (Him) ἀπολέσωσιν (they might destroy). 15 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), γνοὺς (having known), ἀνεχώρησεν (withdrew) ἐκεῖθεν (from there). καὶ (And) ἠκολούθησαν (followed) αὐτῷ (Him) [ὄχλοι] (multitudes) πολλοί (great), καὶ (and) ἐθεράπευσεν (He healed) αὐτοὺς (them) πάντας (all), 16 καὶ (and) ἐπετίμησεν (He warned) αὐτοῖς (them) ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) φανερὸν (known) αὐτὸν (Him) ποιήσωσιν (they should make) — 17 ἵνα (so that) πληρωθῇ (might be fulfilled) τὸ (that) ῥηθὲν (having been spoken) διὰ (by) Ἠσαΐου (Isaiah) τοῦ (the) προφήτου (prophet), λέγοντος (saying), 18 “Ἰδοὺ (Behold) ὁ (the) παῖς (servant) μου (of Me), ὃν (whom) ᾑρέτισα (I have chosen), ὁ (the) ἀγαπητός (beloved) μου (of Me), ‹εἰς› (in) ὃν (whom) εὐδόκησεν (has found delight) ἡ (the) ψυχή (soul) μου (of Me). θήσω (I will put) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμά (Spirit) μου (of Me) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτόν (Him), καὶ (and) κρίσιν (justice) τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles) ἀπαγγελεῖ (He will proclaim). 19 οὐκ (Not) ἐρίσει (will He quarrel) οὐδὲ (nor) κραυγάσει (will he cry out), οὐδὲ (nor) ἀκούσει (will hear) τις (anyone) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) πλατείαις (streets) τὴν (the) φωνὴν (voice) αὐτοῦ (of Him). 20 κάλαμον (A reed) συντετριμμένον (bruised) οὐ (not) κατεάξει (He will break), καὶ (and) λίνον (a wick) τυφόμενον (smoldering) οὐ (not) σβέσει (He will quench), ἕως (until) ἂν (-) ἐκβάλῃ (He leads) εἰς (to) νῖκος (victory) τὴν (-) κρίσιν (justice). 21 καὶ (And) τῷ (in the) ὀνόματι (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἔθνη (the Gentiles) ἐλπιοῦσιν (will hope).” 22 Τότε (Then) προσηνέχθη (was brought) αὐτῷ (to Him) δαιμονιζόμενος (one possessed by a demon), τυφλὸς (blind) καὶ (and) κωφός (mute), καὶ (and) ἐθεράπευσεν (He healed) αὐτόν (him), ὥστε (in order for) τὸν (the) κωφὸν (mute man) λαλεῖν (to speak) καὶ (and) βλέπειν (to see). 23 καὶ (And) ἐξίσταντο (were amazed) πάντες (all) οἱ (the) ὄχλοι (crowds), καὶ (and) ἔλεγον (were saying), “Μήτι (Whether) οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) υἱὸς (Son) Δαυίδ (of David)?” 24 Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) Φαρισαῖοι (the Pharisees), ἀκούσαντες (having heard), εἶπον (said), “Οὗτος (This man) οὐκ (not) ἐκβάλλει (casts out) τὰ (the) δαιμόνια (demons), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἐν (by) τῷ (-) Βεελζεβοὺλ (Beelzebul) ἄρχοντι (prince) τῶν (of the) δαιμονίων (demons).” 25 Εἰδὼς (Having known) δὲ (now) τὰς (the) ἐνθυμήσεις (thoughts) αὐτῶν (of them), εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Πᾶσα (Every) βασιλεία (kingdom) μερισθεῖσα (having been divided) καθ’ (against) ἑαυτῆς (itself) ἐρημοῦται (is brought to desolation), καὶ (and) πᾶσα (every) πόλις (city) ἢ (or) οἰκία (house) μερισθεῖσα (having been divided) καθ’ (against) ἑαυτῆς (itself) οὐ (not) σταθήσεται (will stand). 26 καὶ (And) εἰ (if) ὁ (-) Σατανᾶς (Satan), τὸν (-) Σατανᾶν (Satan) ἐκβάλλει (casts out), ἐφ’ (against) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ἐμερίσθη (he is divided). πῶς (How) οὖν (then) σταθήσεται (will stand) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) αὐτοῦ (of him)? 27 Καὶ (And) εἰ (if) ἐγὼ (I) ἐν (by) Βεελζεβοὺλ (Beelzebul) ἐκβάλλω (cast out) τὰ (-) δαιμόνια (demons), οἱ (the) υἱοὶ (sons) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐν (by) τίνι (whom) ἐκβάλλουσιν (do they cast out)? διὰ (On account of) τοῦτο (this), αὐτοὶ (they) κριταὶ (judges) ἔσονται (will be) ὑμῶν (of you). 28 εἰ (If) δὲ (however) ἐν (by the) Πνεύματι (Spirit) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐγὼ (I) ἐκβάλλω (cast out) τὰ (-) δαιμόνια (demons), ἄρα (then) ἔφθασεν (has come) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). 29 Ἢ (Or) πῶς (how) δύναταί (is able) τις (anyone) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) οἰκίαν (house) τοῦ (of the) ἰσχυροῦ (strong man) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) σκεύη (goods) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἁρπάσαι (to plunder), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) πρῶτον (first) δήσῃ (he bind) τὸν (the) ἰσχυρόν (strong man)? καὶ (And) τότε (then) τὴν (the) οἰκίαν (house) αὐτοῦ (of him) διαρπάσει (he will plunder). 30 Ὁ (The one) μὴ (not) ὢν (being) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (Me) κατ’ (against) ἐμοῦ (Me) ἐστιν (is), καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) μὴ (not) συνάγων (gathering) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (Me) σκορπίζει (scatters). 31 Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), πᾶσα (every) ἁμαρτία (sin) καὶ (and) βλασφημία (blasphemy) ἀφεθήσεται (will be forgiven) τοῖς (-) ἀνθρώποις (men); ἡ (-) δὲ (however) τοῦ (against) Πνεύματος (the Spirit) βλασφημία (blasphemy) οὐκ (not) ἀφεθήσεται (will be forgiven). 32 καὶ (And) ὃς (whoever) ἐὰν (if) εἴπῃ (speaks) λόγον (a word) κατὰ (against) τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man), ἀφεθήσεται (it will be forgiven) αὐτῷ (him); ὃς (whoever) δ’ (now) ἂν (-) εἴπῃ (speaks) κατὰ (against) τοῦ (-) Πνεύματος (Spirit) τοῦ (the) Ἁγίου (Holy), οὐκ (not) ἀφεθήσεται (it will be forgiven) αὐτῷ (him), οὔτε (neither) ἐν (in) τούτῳ (this) τῷ (-) αἰῶνι (age) οὔτε (nor) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) μέλλοντι (coming one). 33 Ἢ (Either) ποιήσατε (make) τὸ (the) δένδρον (tree) καλὸν (good) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) καρπὸν (fruit) αὐτοῦ (of it) καλόν (good), ἢ (or) ποιήσατε (make) τὸ (the) δένδρον (tree) σαπρὸν (bad) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) καρπὸν (fruit) αὐτοῦ (of it) σαπρόν (bad); ἐκ (by) γὰρ (for) τοῦ (the) καρποῦ (fruit), τὸ (the) δένδρον (tree) γινώσκεται (is known). 34 γεννήματα (Offspring) ἐχιδνῶν (of vipers), πῶς (how) δύνασθε (are you able) ἀγαθὰ (good things) λαλεῖν (to speak), πονηροὶ (evil) ὄντες (being)? ἐκ (Out of) γὰρ (for) τοῦ (the) περισσεύματος (abundance) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart), τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) λαλεῖ (speaks). 35 ὁ (The) ἀγαθὸς (good) ἄνθρωπος (man) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (his) ἀγαθοῦ (good) θησαυροῦ (treasure) ἐκβάλλει (puts forth) ἀγαθά (good things); καὶ (and) ὁ (the) πονηρὸς (evil) ἄνθρωπος (man) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (his) πονηροῦ (evil) θησαυροῦ (treasure) ἐκβάλλει (puts forth) πονηρά (evil things). 36 λέγω (I say) δὲ (now) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) πᾶν (every) ῥῆμα (word) ἀργὸν (careless) ὃ (that) λαλήσουσιν (will speak) οἱ (-) ἄνθρωποι (men), ἀποδώσουσιν (they will give) περὶ (of) αὐτοῦ (it) λόγον (an account) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (day) κρίσεως (of judgment). 37 ἐκ (By) γὰρ (for) τῶν (the) λόγων (words) σου (of you), δικαιωθήσῃ (you will be justified), καὶ (and) ἐκ (by) τῶν (the) λόγων (words) σου (of you), καταδικασθήσῃ (you will be condemned).” 38 Τότε (Then) ἀπεκρίθησαν (answered) αὐτῷ (him) τινες (some) τῶν (of the) γραμματέων (scribes) καὶ (and) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees), λέγοντες (saying), “Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), θέλομεν (we wish) ἀπὸ (from) σοῦ (You) σημεῖον (a sign) ἰδεῖν (to see).” 39 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Γενεὰ (A generation) πονηρὰ (evil) καὶ (and) μοιχαλὶς (adulterous) σημεῖον (a sign) ἐπιζητεῖ (seeks for), καὶ (and) σημεῖον (a sign) οὐ (not) δοθήσεται (will be given) αὐτῇ (to it), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) τὸ (the) σημεῖον (sign) Ἰωνᾶ (of Jonah) τοῦ (the) προφήτου (prophet). 40 ὥσπερ (Just as) γὰρ (for) ἦν (was) Ἰωνᾶς (Jonah) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) κοιλίᾳ (belly) τοῦ (of the) κήτους (great fish) τρεῖς (three) ἡμέρας (days) καὶ (and) τρεῖς (three) νύκτας (nights), οὕτως (so) ἔσται (will be) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth) τρεῖς (three) ἡμέρας (days) καὶ (and) τρεῖς (three) νύκτας (nights). 41 Ἄνδρες (The men) Νινευῖται (of Nineveh) ἀναστήσονται (will stand up) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) κρίσει (judgment) μετὰ (with) τῆς (the) γενεᾶς (generation) ταύτης (this), καὶ (and) κατακρινοῦσιν (will condemn) αὐτήν (it); ὅτι (for) μετενόησαν (they repented) εἰς (at) τὸ (the) κήρυγμα (preaching) Ἰωνᾶ (of Jonah); καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold), πλεῖον (greater) Ἰωνᾶ (than Jonah) ὧδε (here). 42 βασίλισσα (The queen) νότου (of the south) ἐγερθήσεται (will rise up) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) κρίσει (judgment) μετὰ (with) τῆς (the) γενεᾶς (generation) ταύτης (this), καὶ (and) κατακρινεῖ (will condemn) αὐτήν (it); ὅτι (for) ἦλθεν (she came) ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) περάτων (ends) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth) ἀκοῦσαι (to hear) τὴν (the) σοφίαν (wisdom) Σολομῶνος (of Solomon), καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold), πλεῖον (greater) Σολομῶνος (than Solomon) ὧδε (here). 43 Ὅταν (When) δὲ (now) τὸ (the) ἀκάθαρτον (unclean) πνεῦμα (spirit) ἐξέλθῃ (is gone out) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) ἀνθρώπου (man), διέρχεται (it passes) δι’ (through) ἀνύδρων (waterless) τόπων (places) ζητοῦν (seeking) ἀνάπαυσιν (rest), καὶ (and) οὐχ (none) εὑρίσκει (finds it). 44 τότε (Then) λέγει (it says), ‘Εἰς (To) τὸν (the) οἶκόν (house) μου (of me) ἐπιστρέψω (I will return), ὅθεν (from where) ἐξῆλθον (I came out).’ καὶ (And) ἐλθὸν (having come), εὑρίσκει (it finds it) σχολάζοντα (being unoccupied), 〈καὶ〉 (and) σεσαρωμένον (swept), καὶ (and) κεκοσμημένον (put in order). 45 τότε (Then) πορεύεται (it goes) καὶ (and) παραλαμβάνει (takes) μεθ’ (with) ἑαυτοῦ (itself) ἑπτὰ (seven) ἕτερα (other) πνεύματα (spirits) πονηρότερα (more evil) ἑαυτοῦ (than itself), καὶ (and) εἰσελθόντα (having entered in), κατοικεῖ (they dwell) ἐκεῖ (there); καὶ (and) γίνεται (becomes) τὰ (the) ἔσχατα (last) τοῦ (of the) ἀνθρώπου (man) ἐκείνου (that) χείρονα (worse) τῶν (than the) πρώτων (first). οὕτως (So) ἔσται (it will be) καὶ (also) τῇ (unto) γενεᾷ (generation) ταύτῃ (this) τῇ (the) πονηρᾷ (evil).” 46 Ἔτι (While) ‹δὲ› (now) αὐτοῦ (He) λαλοῦντος (was speaking) τοῖς (to the) ὄχλοις (crowds), ἰδοὺ (behold), ἡ (the) μήτηρ (mother) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἀδελφοὶ (brothers) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἱστήκεισαν (were standing) ἔξω (outside), ζητοῦντες (seeking) αὐτῷ (to Him) λαλῆσαι (to speak). 47 εἶπεν (Said) δέ (now) τις (someone) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἡ (the) μήτηρ (mother) σου (of You) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἀδελφοί (brothers) σου (of you) ἔξω (outside) ἑστήκασιν (are standing), ζητοῦντές (seeking) σοι (to You) λαλῆσαι (to speak).” 48 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (He said) τῷ (to the one) λέγοντι (telling) αὐτῷ (Him), “Τίς (Who) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) μήτηρ (mother) μου (of Me), καὶ (and) τίνες (who) εἰσὶν (are) οἱ (the) ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (of Me)?” 49 καὶ (And) ἐκτείνας (having stretched out) τὴν (the) χεῖρα (hand) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐπὶ (to) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), εἶπεν (He said), “Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἡ (the) μήτηρ (mother) μου (of Me) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (of Me). 50 ὅστις (Whoever) γὰρ (for) ἂν (-) ποιήσῃ (shall do) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me) τοῦ (who is) ἐν (in) οὐρανοῖς (the heavens), αὐτός (he) μου (My) ἀδελφὸς (brother) καὶ (and) ἀδελφὴ (sister) καὶ (and) μήτηρ (mother) ἐστίν (is).” 13 1 Ἐν (In) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ἐκείνῃ (that), ἐξελθὼν (having gone forth) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) τῆς (from the) οἰκίας (house), ἐκάθητο (was sitting) παρὰ (by) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (sea). 2 καὶ (And) συνήχθησαν (were gathered together) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) ὄχλοι (crowds) πολλοί (great), ὥστε (so that) αὐτὸν (He) εἰς (into) πλοῖον (a boat) ἐμβάντα (having entered) καθῆσθαι (sat down), καὶ (and) πᾶς (all) ὁ (the) ὄχλος (crowd) ἐπὶ (on) τὸν (the) αἰγιαλὸν (shore) εἱστήκει (stood). 3 Καὶ (And) ἐλάλησεν (He spoke) αὐτοῖς (to them) πολλὰ (many things) ἐν (in) παραβολαῖς (parables), λέγων (saying), “Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἐξῆλθεν (went out) ὁ (the one) σπείρων (sowing) τοῦ (-) σπείρειν (to sow). 4 καὶ (And) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) σπείρειν (sowing) αὐτὸν (of him), ἃ (some) μὲν (indeed) ἔπεσεν (fell) παρὰ (along) τὴν (the) ὁδόν (road), καὶ (and) ἐλθόντα (having come), τὰ (the) πετεινὰ (birds) κατέφαγεν (devoured) αὐτά (them). 5 Ἄλλα (Other) δὲ (now) ἔπεσεν (fell) ἐπὶ (upon) τὰ (the) πετρώδη (rocky places), ὅπου (where) οὐκ (not) εἶχεν (it had) γῆν (soil) πολλήν (much), καὶ (and) εὐθέως (immediately) ἐξανέτειλεν (it sprang up), διὰ (through) τὸ (-) μὴ (not) ἔχειν (having) βάθος (depth) γῆς (of soil); 6 ἡλίου (the sun) δὲ (now) ἐπὶ (upon) τὰς (the) ἀκάνθας (thorns), καὶ (and) ἀνέβησαν (grew up) αἱ (the) ἄκανθαι (thorns), καὶ (and) ἔπνιξαν* (choked) αὐτά (them). 8 Ἄλλα (Other) δὲ (now) ἔπεσεν (fell) ἐπὶ (upon) τὴν (the) γῆν (soil) τὴν (-) καλὴν (good), καὶ (and) ἐδίδου (were yielding) καρπόν (fruit), ὃ (some) μὲν (indeed) ἑκατὸν (a hundredfold), ὃ (some) δὲ (now) ἑξήκοντα (sixty), ὃ (some) δὲ (now) τριάκοντα (thirty). 9 Ὁ (The one) ἔχων (having) ὦτα (ears), ἀκουέτω (let him hear)!” 10 Καὶ (And) προσελθόντες (having come to Him), οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) ἐν (in) παραβολαῖς (parables) λαλεῖς (speak You) αὐτοῖς (to them)?” 11 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (He said) ‹αὐτοῖς› (to them), “Ὅτι (Because) Ὑμῖν (to you) δέδοται (it has been granted) γνῶναι (to know) τὰ (the) μυστήρια (mysteries) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens); ἐκείνοις (to them) δὲ (however) οὐ (not) δέδοται (it has been granted). 12 ὅστις (Whoever) γὰρ (for) ἔχει (has), δοθήσεται (will be given) αὐτῷ (to him), καὶ (and) περισσευθήσεται (he will be in abundance); ὅστις (whoever) δὲ (now) οὐκ (not) ἔχει (has), καὶ (even) ὃ (what) ἔχει (he has) ἀρθήσεται (will be taken away) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him). 13 διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ἐν (in) παραβολαῖς (parables) αὐτοῖς (to them) λαλῶ (I speak): ‘Ὅτι (Because) βλέποντες (seeing), οὐ (not) βλέπουσιν (do they see); Καὶ (and) ἀκούοντες (hearing), οὐκ (not) ἀκούουσιν (do they hear), οὐδὲ (nor) συνίουσιν (do they understand).’ 14 Καὶ (And) ἀναπληροῦται (is fulfilled) αὐτοῖς (in them) ἡ (the) προφητεία (prophecy) Ἠσαΐου (of Isaiah), ἡ (-) λέγουσα (saying): ‘Ἀκοῇ (In hearing) ἀκούσετε (you will hear), καὶ (and) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) συνῆτε (understand); Καὶ (and) βλέποντες (seeing) βλέψετε (you will see) καὶ (and) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἴδητε (perceive). 15 Ἐπαχύνθη (Has grown dull) γὰρ (for) ἡ (the) καρδία (heart) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people) τούτου (this), Καὶ (and) τοῖς (with the) ὠσὶν (ears) βαρέως (barely) ἤκουσαν (they have heard), Καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐκάμμυσαν (they have closed); Μή‿ (not) ποτε (lest) ἴδωσιν (they should see) τοῖς (with the) ὀφθαλμοῖς (eyes), Καὶ (and) τοῖς (with the) ὠσὶν (ears) ἀκούσωσιν (they should hear), Καὶ (and) τῇ (with the) καρδίᾳ (heart) συνῶσιν (they should understand), Καὶ (and) ἐπιστρέψωσιν (should return), Καὶ (and) ἰάσομαι (I will heal) αὐτούς (them).’ 16 Ὑμῶν (Of you) δὲ (however) μακάριοι (blessed) οἱ (are the) ὀφθαλμοὶ (eyes), ὅτι (because) βλέπουσιν (they see); καὶ (and) τὰ (the) ὦτα (ears) ὑμῶν (of you), ὅτι (because) ἀκούουσιν (they hear). 17 ἀμὴν (Truly) γὰρ (for) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι (that) πολλοὶ (many) προφῆται (prophets) καὶ (and) δίκαιοι (righteous men) ἐπεθύμησαν (longed) ἰδεῖν (to see) ἃ (what) βλέπετε (you see), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) εἶδαν (saw); καὶ (and) ἀκοῦσαι (to hear) ἃ (what) ἀκούετε (you hear), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἤκουσαν (heard). 18 Ὑμεῖς (You) οὖν (therefore) ἀκούσατε (hear) τὴν (the) παραβολὴν (parable) τοῦ (of the one) σπείραντος (having sown): 19 Παντὸς (Everyone) ἀκούοντος (hearing) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) συνιέντος (understanding), ἔρχεται (comes) ὁ (the) πονηρὸς (evil one) καὶ (and) ἁρπάζει (snatches away) τὸ (that) ἐσπαρμένον (having been sown) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) αὐτοῦ (of him). οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the one) παρὰ (on) τὴν (the) ὁδὸν (path) σπαρείς (having been sown). 20 Ὁ (That which) δὲ (now) ἐπὶ (upon) τὰ (the) πετρώδη (rocky places) σπαρείς (having been sown), οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the one) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) ἀκούων (hearing), καὶ (and) εὐθὺς (immediately) μετὰ (with) χαρᾶς (joy) λαμβάνων (receiving) αὐτόν (it); 21 οὐκ (no) ἔχει (he has) δὲ (now) ῥίζαν (root) ἐν (in) ἑαυτῷ (himself), ἀλλὰ (but) πρόσκαιρός (temporary) ἐστιν (is); γενομένης (having come) δὲ (however) θλίψεως (tribulation) ἢ (or) διωγμοῦ (persecution) διὰ (on account of) τὸν (the) λόγον (word), εὐθὺς (immediately) σκανδαλίζεται (he falls away). 22 Ὁ (That which) δὲ (now) εἰς (among) τὰς (the) ἀκάνθας (thorns) σπαρείς (having been sown), οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the one) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) ἀκούων (hearing), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) μέριμνα (care) τοῦ (-) αἰῶνος (present age) ‹τούτου› (of this) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀπάτη (deceit) τοῦ (-) πλούτου (of riches) συμπνίγει (choke) τὸν (the) λόγον (word), καὶ (and) ἄκαρπος (unfruitful) γίνεται (it becomes). 23 Ὁ (That) δὲ (however) ἐπὶ (on) τὴν (the) καλὴν (good) γῆν (soil) σπαρείς (having been sown), οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the one) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) ἀκούων (hearing) καὶ (and) συνιείς (understanding), ὃς (who) δὴ (indeed) καρποφορεῖ (brings forth fruit) καὶ (and) ποιεῖ (produces) — ὃ (some) μὲν (indeed) ἑκατὸν (a hundredfold), ὃ (some) δὲ (now) ἑξήκοντα (sixty), ὃ (some) δὲ (now) τριάκοντα (thirty).” 24 Ἄλλην (Another) παραβολὴν (parable) παρέθηκεν (put He before) αὐτοῖς (them), λέγων (saying), “Ὡμοιώθη (Has become like) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens), ἀνθρώπῳ (a man) σπείραντι (having sown) καλὸν (good) σπέρμα (seed) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀγρῷ (field) αὐτοῦ (of him). 25 ἐν (In) δὲ (now) τῷ (the time) καθεύδειν (are sleeping) τοὺς (the) ἀνθρώπους (men), ἦλθεν (came) αὐτοῦ (his) ὁ (-) ἐχθρὸς (enemy) καὶ (and) ἐπέσπειρεν (sowed) ζιζάνια (weeds) ἀνὰ (in the) μέσον (midst) τοῦ (of the) σίτου (wheat), καὶ (and) ἀπῆλθεν (went away). 26 ὅτε (When) δὲ (now) ἐβλάστησεν (sprouted) ὁ (the) χόρτος (plants) καὶ (and) καρπὸν (fruit) ἐποίησεν (produced), τότε (then) ἐφάνη (appeared) καὶ (also) τὰ (the) ζιζάνια (weeds). 27 Προσελθόντες (Having come to him) δὲ (now), οἱ (the) δοῦλοι (servants) τοῦ (the) οἰκοδεσπότου (master of the house) εἶπον (said) αὐτῷ (to him), ‘Κύριε (Sir), οὐχὶ (not) καλὸν (good) σπέρμα (seed) ἔσπειρας (did you sow) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) σῷ (your) ἀγρῷ (field)? πόθεν (How) οὖν (then) ἔχει (has it) ζιζάνια (the weeds)?’ 28 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἔφη (he said) αὐτοῖς (to them), ‘Ἐχθρὸς (An enemy), ἄνθρωπος (a man) τοῦτο (this) ἐποίησεν (did).’ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) δοῦλοι (the servants) αὐτῷ (to him) λέγουσιν (said), ‘Θέλεις (Do you desire) οὖν (then) ἀπελθόντες (that having gone forth), συλλέξωμεν (we should gather) αὐτά (them)?’ 29 Ὁ (-) δέ (And) φησιν (he said), ‘Οὔ (No); μή‿ (not) ποτε (lest) συλλέγοντες (gathering) τὰ (the) ζιζάνια (weeds), ἐκριζώσητε (you would uproot) ἅμα (with) αὐτοῖς (them) τὸν (the) σῖτον (wheat). 30 ἄφετε (Allow) συναυξάνεσθαι (to grow together) ἀμφότερα (both) ἕως (until) τοῦ (the) θερισμοῦ (harvest); καὶ (and) ἐν (in) καιρῷ (the time) τοῦ (of the) θερισμοῦ (harvest) ἐρῶ (I will say) τοῖς (to the) θερισταῖς (harvesters), “Συλλέξατε (Gather) πρῶτον (first) τὰ (the) ζιζάνια (weeds), καὶ (and) δήσατε (bind) αὐτὰ (them) εἰς (into) δέσμας (bundles) πρὸς (in order) τὸ (-) κατακαῦσαι (to burn) αὐτά (them); τὸν (-) δὲ (and) σῖτον (the wheat), συναγάγετε (gather together) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) ἀποθήκην (barn) μου (of me).”’” 31 Ἄλλην (Another) παραβολὴν (parable) παρέθηκεν (put He before) αὐτοῖς (them), λέγων (saying), “Ὁμοία (Like) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) κόκκῳ (to a grain) σινάπεως (of mustard), ὃν (which) λαβὼν (having taken), ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἔσπειρεν (sowed) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀγρῷ (field) αὐτοῦ (of him); 32 ὃ (which) μικρότερον (smallest) μέν (indeed) ἐστιν (is) πάντων (of all) τῶν (the) σπερμάτων (seeds); ὅταν (when) δὲ (however) αὐξηθῇ (it is grown), μεῖζον (greater) τῶν (than the) λαχάνων (garden plants) ἐστὶν (it is), καὶ (and) γίνεται (becomes) δένδρον (a tree), ὥστε (so that) ἐλθεῖν (come) τὰ (the) πετεινὰ (birds) τοῦ (of the) οὐρανοῦ (air) καὶ (and) κατασκηνοῦν* (perch) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) κλάδοις (branches) αὐτοῦ (of it).” 33 Ἄλλην (Another) παραβολὴν (parable) ἐλάλησεν (spoke He) αὐτοῖς (to them): “Ὁμοία (Like) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) ζύμῃ (to leaven), ἣν (which) λαβοῦσα (having taken), γυνὴ (a woman) ἐνέκρυψεν (hid) εἰς (in) ἀλεύρου (of flour) σάτα (measures) τρία (three), ἕως (until) οὗ (of it) ἐζυμώθη (was leavened) ὅλον (all).” 34 Ταῦτα (These things) πάντα (all) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐν (in) παραβολαῖς (parables) τοῖς (to the) ὄχλοις (crowds), καὶ (and) χωρὶς (without) παραβολῆς (a parable) οὐδὲν (not) ἐλάλει (He was speaking) αὐτοῖς (to them), 35 ὅπως (so that) πληρωθῇ (might be fulfilled) τὸ (that) ῥηθὲν (having been spoken) διὰ (by) τοῦ (the) προφήτου (prophet), λέγοντος (saying), “Ἀνοίξω (I will open) ἐν (in) παραβολαῖς (parables) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) μου (of Me); ἐρεύξομαι (I will utter) κεκρυμμένα (things hidden) ἀπὸ (from the) καταβολῆς (foundation) [κόσμου] (of the world).” 36 Τότε (Then) ἀφεὶς (having dismissed) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds), ἦλθεν (He went) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) οἰκίαν (house). Καὶ (And) προσῆλθον (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), λέγοντες (saying), “Διασάφησον (Explain) ἡμῖν (to us) τὴν (the) παραβολὴν (parable) τῶν (of the) ζιζανίων (weeds) τοῦ (of the) ἀγροῦ (field).” 37 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said), “Ὁ (The One) σπείρων (sowing) τὸ (the) καλὸν (good) σπέρμα (seed) ἐστὶν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man); 38 ὁ (-) δὲ (and) ἀγρός (the field) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world); τὸ (-) δὲ (and) καλὸν (the good) σπέρμα (seed), οὗτοί (these) εἰσιν (are) οἱ (the) υἱοὶ (sons) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom); τὰ (-) δὲ (and) ζιζάνιά (the weeds) εἰσιν (are) οἱ (the) υἱοὶ (sons) τοῦ (of the) πονηροῦ (evil one); 39 ὁ (-) δὲ (and) ἐχθρὸς (the enemy) ὁ (-) σπείρας (having sown) αὐτά (them) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) διάβολος (devil); ὁ (-) δὲ (and) θερισμὸς (the harvest) συντέλεια (the consummation) αἰῶνός (of the age) ἐστιν (is), οἱ (-) δὲ (and) θερισταὶ (the harvesters) ἄγγελοί (angels) εἰσιν (are). 40 Ὥσπερ (As) οὖν (therefore) συλλέγεται (is gathered) τὰ (the) ζιζάνια (weeds), καὶ (and) πυρὶ (in fire) κατακαίεται (is consumed), οὕτως (thus) ἔσται (it will be) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) συντελείᾳ (consummation) τοῦ (of the) αἰῶνος (age). 41 ἀποστελεῖ (Will send forth) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) τοὺς (the) ἀγγέλους (angels) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) συλλέξουσιν (they will gather) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) βασιλείας (kingdom) αὐτοῦ (of Him) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) σκάνδαλα (causes of sin) καὶ (and) τοὺς (those) ποιοῦντας (practicing) τὴν (-) ἀνομίαν (lawlessness), 42 καὶ (and) βαλοῦσιν (they will cast) αὐτοὺς (them) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κάμινον (furnace) τοῦ (of the) πυρός (fire); ἐκεῖ (there) ἔσται (will be) ὁ (the) κλαυθμὸς (weeping) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) βρυγμὸς (gnashing) τῶν (of) ὀδόντων (teeth). 43 τότε (Then) οἱ (the) δίκαιοι (righteous) ἐκλάμψουσιν (will shine forth) ὡς (as) ὁ (the) ἥλιος (sun) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τοῦ (of the) Πατρὸς (Father) αὐτῶν (of them). Ὁ (The one) ἔχων (having) ὦτα (ears), ἀκουέτω (let him hear)! 44 Ὁμοία (Like) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) θησαυρῷ (treasure) κεκρυμμένῳ (having been hidden) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀγρῷ (field), ὃν (which), εὑρὼν (having found), ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἔκρυψεν (hid), καὶ (and) ἀπὸ (for) τῆς (the) χαρᾶς (joy) αὐτοῦ (of it) ὑπάγει (goes) καὶ (and) πωλεῖ (he sells) ‹πάντα› (all) ὅσα (that) ἔχει (he has) καὶ (and) ἀγοράζει (buys) τὸν (the) ἀγρὸν (field) ἐκεῖνον (that). 45 Πάλιν (Again) ὁμοία (like) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) ‹ἀνθρώπῳ› (a man), ἐμπόρῳ (a merchant) ζητοῦντι (seeking) καλοὺς (fine) μαργαρίτας (pearls); 46 εὑρὼν (having found) δὲ (now) ἕνα (one) πολύτιμον (very precious) μαργαρίτην (pearl), ἀπελθὼν (having gone away), πέπρακεν (he has sold) πάντα (all things) ὅσα (as many as) εἶχεν (he had), καὶ (and) ἠγόρασεν (bought) αὐτόν (it). 47 Πάλιν (Again) ὁμοία (like) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) σαγήνῃ (a dragnet) βληθείσῃ (having been cast) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (sea), καὶ (and) ἐκ (of) παντὸς (every) γένους (kind) συναγαγούσῃ (having gathered together), 48 ἣν (which), ὅτε (when) ἐπληρώθη (it was filled), ἀναβιβάσαντες (having drawn up) ἐπὶ (on) τὸν (the) αἰγιαλὸν (shore) καὶ (and) καθίσαντες (having sat down), συνέλεξαν (they collected) τὰ (the) καλὰ (good) εἰς (into) ἄγγη (vessels), τὰ (the) δὲ (and) σαπρὰ (bad) ἔξω (out) ἔβαλον (they cast). 49 Οὕτως (Thus) ἔσται (will it be) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) συντελείᾳ (consummation) τοῦ (of the) αἰῶνος (age); ἐξελεύσονται (will go out) οἱ (the) ἄγγελοι (angels), καὶ (and) ἀφοριοῦσιν (will separate) τοὺς (the) πονηροὺς (evil) ἐκ (from) μέσου (the midst) τῶν (of the) δικαίων (righteous), 50 καὶ (and) βαλοῦσιν (will cast) αὐτοὺς (them) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κάμινον (furnace) τοῦ (of the) πυρός (fire). ἐκεῖ (There) ἔσται (will be) ὁ (the) κλαυθμὸς (weeping) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) βρυγμὸς (gnashing) τῶν (of the) ὀδόντων (teeth). 51 Συνήκατε (Have you understood) ταῦτα (these things) πάντα (all)?” Λέγουσιν (They say) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ναί (Yes).” 52 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), πᾶς (every) γραμματεὺς (scribe) μαθητευθεὶς (having been discipled) τῇ (into the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) ὅμοιός (like) ἐστιν (is) ἀνθρώπῳ (a man), οἰκοδεσπότῃ (a master of a house), ὅστις (who) ἐκβάλλει (puts forth) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) θησαυροῦ (treasure) αὐτοῦ (of him) καινὰ (things new) καὶ (and) παλαιά (old).” 53 Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass), ὅτε (when) ἐτέλεσεν (had finished) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) τὰς (the) παραβολὰς (parables) ταύτας (these), μετῆρεν (He withdrew) ἐκεῖθεν (from there). 54 καὶ (And) ἐλθὼν (having come) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) πατρίδα (region) αὐτοῦ (His own), ἐδίδασκεν (He was teaching) αὐτοὺς (them) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) συναγωγῇ (synagogue) αὐτῶν (of them), ὥστε (so that) ἐκπλήσσεσθαι (are astonished) αὐτοὺς (they) καὶ (and) λέγειν (are saying), “Πόθεν (From where) τούτῳ (to this man) ἡ (the) σοφία (wisdom) αὕτη (this) καὶ (and) αἱ (the) δυνάμεις (miraculous powers)? 55 οὐχ (Not) οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) τοῦ (of the) τέκτονος (carpenter) υἱός (Son)? οὐχ (Is not) ἡ (the) μήτηρ (mother) αὐτοῦ (of Him) λέγεται (called) Μαριὰμ (Mary)? καὶ (And) οἱ (the) ἀδελφοὶ (brothers) αὐτοῦ (of Him) Ἰάκωβος (James) καὶ (and) Ἰωσὴφ (Joseph) καὶ (and) Σίμων (Simon) καὶ (and) Ἰούδας (Judas)? 56 καὶ (And) αἱ (the) ἀδελφαὶ (sisters) αὐτοῦ (of Him) οὐχὶ (not) πᾶσαι (all) πρὸς (with) ἡμᾶς (us) εἰσιν (are)? πόθεν (From where) οὖν (then) τούτῳ (to this man) ταῦτα (these things) πάντα (all)?” 57 καὶ (And) ἐσκανδαλίζοντο (they were offended) ἐν (at) αὐτῷ (Him). Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Οὐκ (Not) ἔστιν (is) προφήτης (a prophet) ἄτιμος (without Honor), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πατρίδι (hometown), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) οἰκίᾳ (household) αὐτοῦ (of him).” 58 καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἐποίησεν (He did) ἐκεῖ (there) δυνάμεις (miracles) πολλὰς (many), διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) ἀπιστίαν (unbelief) αὐτῶν (of them). 14 1 Ἐν (At) ἐκείνῳ (that) τῷ (-) καιρῷ (time) ἤκουσεν (heard) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) ὁ (the) τετραάρχης (tetrarch) τὴν (the) ἀκοὴν (news) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus), 2 καὶ (and) εἶπεν (he said) τοῖς (to) παισὶν (the servants) αὐτοῦ (of him), “Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) Ἰωάννης (John) ὁ (the) Βαπτιστής (Baptist); αὐτὸς (he) ἠγέρθη (is risen) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) νεκρῶν (dead), καὶ (and) διὰ (because of) τοῦτο (this), αἱ (the) δυνάμεις (miraculous powers) ἐνεργοῦσιν (are working) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him).” 3 Ὁ (-) γὰρ (For) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) κρατήσας (having seized) τὸν (-) Ἰωάνην (John), ἔδησεν (he bound) ‹αὐτὸν› (him) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) φυλακῇ (prison) ἀπέθετο (put him), διὰ (on account of) Ἡρῳδιάδα (Herodias), τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) Φιλίππου (of Philip), τοῦ (the) ἀδελφοῦ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him). 4 ἔλεγεν (Had been saying) γὰρ (for) «ὁ (-) Ἰωάννης» (John) αὐτῷ (to him), “Οὐκ (Not) ἔξεστίν (it is lawful) σοι (for you) ἔχειν (to have) αὐτήν (her).” 5 καὶ (Although) θέλων (wishing) αὐτὸν (him) ἀποκτεῖναι (to kill), ἐφοβήθη (he feared) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (multitude), ὅτι (because) ὡς (as) προφήτην (a prophet) αὐτὸν (him) εἶχον (they were holding). 6 Γενεσίοις (The birthday) δὲ (now) γενομένοις (having been celebrated) τοῦ (-) Ἡρῴδου (of Herod), ὠρχήσατο (danced) ἡ (the) θυγάτηρ (daughter) τῆς (-) Ἡρῳδιάδος (of Herodias) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) μέσῳ (midst), καὶ (and) ἤρεσεν (pleased) τῷ (-) Ἡρῴδῃ (Herod), 7 ὅθεν (whereupon) μεθ’ (with) ὅρκου (oath) ὡμολόγησεν (he promised) αὐτῇ (to her) δοῦναι (to give) ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) αἰτήσηται (she should ask). 8 Ἡ (-) δὲ (And) προβιβασθεῖσα (having been urged on) ὑπὸ (by) τῆς (the) μητρὸς (mother) αὐτῆς (of her), “Δός (Give) μοι (me),” φησίν (she says), “Ὧδε (here) ἐπὶ (upon) πίνακι (a platter) τὴν (the) κεφαλὴν (head) Ἰωάννου (of John) τοῦ (the) Βαπτιστοῦ (Baptist).” 9 Καὶ (And) λυπηθεὶς (having been grieved) ὁ (the) βασιλεὺς (king), διὰ (on account of) τοὺς (the) ὅρκους (oaths) καὶ (and) τοὺς (those) συνανακειμένους (reclining with him), ἐκέλευσεν (he commanded it) δοθῆναι (to be given). 10 καὶ (And) πέμψας (he having sent), ἀπεκεφάλισεν (beheaded) ‹τὸν› (-) Ἰωάννην (John) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) φυλακῇ (prison). 11 Καὶ (And) ἠνέχθη (was brought) ἡ (the) κεφαλὴ (head) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐπὶ (on) πίνακι (a platter), καὶ (and) ἐδόθη (was given) τῷ (to the) κορασίῳ (girl), καὶ (and) ἤνεγκεν (she brought it) τῇ (to) μητρὶ (the mother) αὐτῆς (of her). 12 καὶ (And) προσελθόντες (having come), οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἦραν (took) τὸ (the) πτῶμα (body), καὶ (and) ἔθαψαν (buried) αὐτόν (it); καὶ (and) ἐλθόντες (having come), ἀπήγγειλαν (they told) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus). 13 Ἀκούσας (Having heard) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀνεχώρησεν (withdrew) ἐκεῖθεν (from there) ἐν (by) πλοίῳ (boat) εἰς (to) ἔρημον (a secluded) τόπον (place) κατ’ (apart) ἰδίαν (Himself). καὶ (And) ἀκούσαντες (having heard of it), οἱ (the) ὄχλοι (crowds) ἠκολούθησαν (followed) αὐτῷ (Him) πεζῇ (on foot) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) πόλεων (towns). 14 Καὶ (And) ἐξελθὼν (having gone out), εἶδεν (He saw) πολὺν (great) ὄχλον (a crowd), καὶ (and) ἐσπλαγχνίσθη (was moved with compassion) ἐπ’ (toward) αὐτοῖς (them), καὶ (and) ἐθεράπευσεν (healed) τοὺς (the) ἀρρώστους (sick) αὐτῶν (of them). 15 Ὀψίας (Evening) δὲ (now) γενομένης (having come), προσῆλθον (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples), λέγοντες (saying), “Ἔρημός (Desolate) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (this) τόπος (place), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ὥρα (time) ἤδη (already) παρῆλθεν (is gone by). ἀπόλυσον (Dismiss) 〈οὖν〉 (therefore) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds), ἵνα (that) ἀπελθόντες (having gone) εἰς (into) τὰς (the) κώμας (villages), ἀγοράσωσιν (they might buy) ἑαυτοῖς (for themselves) βρώματα (food).” 16 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Οὐ (No) χρείαν (need) ἔχουσιν (they have) ἀπελθεῖν (to go away). δότε (Give) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὑμεῖς (you) φαγεῖν (to eat).” 17 Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) λέγουσιν (they say) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Οὐκ (Not) ἔχομεν (we have) ὧδε (here), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) πέντε (five) ἄρτους (loaves) καὶ (and) δύο (two) ἰχθύας (fish).” 18 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said), “Φέρετέ (Bring) μοι (to Me) ὧδε (here) αὐτούς (them).” 19 καὶ (And) κελεύσας (having commanded) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds) ἀνακλιθῆναι (to sit down) ἐπὶ (on) τοῦ (the) χόρτου (grass), λαβὼν (having taken) τοὺς (the) πέντε (five) ἄρτους (loaves) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) δύο (two) ἰχθύας (fish), ἀναβλέψας (having looked up) εἰς (to) τὸν (-) οὐρανὸν (heaven), εὐλόγησεν (He spoke a blessing); καὶ (and) κλάσας (having broken), ἔδωκεν (He gave) τοῖς (to the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) τοὺς (the) ἄρτους (loaves), οἱ (-) δὲ (and) μαθηταὶ (the disciples) τοῖς (to the) ὄχλοις (crowds). 20 Καὶ (And) ἔφαγον (ate) πάντες (all) καὶ (and) ἐχορτάσθησαν (were satisfied); καὶ (and) ἦραν (they took up) τὸ (that) περισσεῦον (being over and above) τῶν (of the) κλασμάτων (fragments), δώδεκα (twelve) κοφίνους (hand-baskets) πλήρεις (full). 21 οἱ (Those) δὲ (then) ἐσθίοντες (eating) ἦσαν (were) ἄνδρες (men) ὡσεὶ (about) πεντακισχίλιοι (five thousand), χωρὶς (besides) γυναικῶν (women) καὶ (and) παιδίων (children). 22 Καὶ (And) εὐθέως (immediately) ἠνάγκασεν (He compelled) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) ἐμβῆναι (to enter) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πλοῖον (boat) καὶ (and) προάγειν (to go before) αὐτὸν (Him) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) πέραν (other side), ἕως (until) οὗ (that) ἀπολύσῃ (He would have dismissed) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds). 23 καὶ (And) ἀπολύσας (having dismissed) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds), ἀνέβη (He went up) εἰς (on) τὸ (the) ὄρος (mountain) κατ’ (by) ἰδίαν (Himself) προσεύξασθαι (to pray). ὀψίας (Evening) δὲ (now) γενομένης (having arrived), μόνος (alone) ἦν (He was) ἐκεῖ (there). 24 τὸ (-) δὲ (And) πλοῖον (the boat), ἤδη (now) σταδίους (stadia) πολλοὺς (many) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) γῆς (land), ἀπεῖχεν (being) βασανιζόμενον (tossed) ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (the) κυμάτων (waves) ἦν (was), γὰρ (for) ἐναντίος (contrary was) ὁ (the) ἄνεμος (wind). 25 Τετάρτῃ (In the fourth) δὲ (now) φυλακῇ (watch) τῆς (of the) νυκτὸς (night), ἦλθεν (He went) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them), περιπατῶν (walking) ἐπὶ (on) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (sea). 26 οἱ (-) δὲ (And) μαθηταὶ (the disciples), ἰδόντες (having seen) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) θαλάσσης (sea) περιπατοῦντα (walking), ἐταράχθησαν (were troubled), λέγοντες (saying) ὅτι (-), “Φάντασμά (A ghost) ἐστιν (it is)!” καὶ (And) ἀπὸ (in) τοῦ (-) φόβου (fear) ἔκραξαν (they cried out). 27 Εὐθὺς (Immediately) δὲ (now) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) «ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς» (Jesus) αὐτοῖς (to them), λέγων (saying), “Θαρσεῖτε (Take courage)! ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (it is), μὴ (not) φοβεῖσθε (fear).” 28 Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now) αὐτῷ (to Him), ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) εἶπεν (said), “Κύριε (Lord), εἰ (if) σὺ (You) εἶ (it is), κέλευσόν (command) με (me) ἐλθεῖν (to come) πρὸς (to) σὲ (You) ἐπὶ (upon) τὰ (the) ὕδατα (waters).” 29 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said), “Ἐλθέ (Come).” Καὶ (And) καταβὰς (having descended) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) πλοίου (boat), [ὁ] (-) Πέτρος (Peter) περιεπάτησεν (walked) ἐπὶ (upon) τὰ (the) ὕδατα (water) καὶ (and) ἦλθεν (came) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus). 30 βλέπων (Seeing) δὲ (now) τὸν (the) ἄνεμον (wind) ‹ἰσχυρὸν› (charging), ἐφοβήθη (he was afraid), καὶ (and) ἀρξάμενος (having begun) καταποντίζεσθαι (to sink), ἔκραξεν (he cried out), λέγων (saying), “Κύριε (Lord), σῶσόν (save) με (me)!” 31 Εὐθέως (Immediately) δὲ (now) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), ἐκτείνας (having stretched out) τὴν (the) χεῖρα (hand), ἐπελάβετο (took hold) αὐτοῦ (of him) καὶ (and) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ὀλιγόπιστε (You of little faith), εἰς (of) τί (why) ἐδίστασας (did you doubt)?” 32 Καὶ (And) ἀναβάντων (having entered) αὐτῶν (they) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πλοῖον (boat), ἐκόπασεν (ceased) ὁ (the) ἄνεμος (wind). 33 οἱ (Those) δὲ (then) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) πλοίῳ (boat) προσεκύνησαν (worshiped) αὐτῷ (Him), λέγοντες (saying), “Ἀληθῶς (Truly), Θεοῦ (of God) Υἱὸς (Son) εἶ (You are)!” 34 Καὶ (And) διαπεράσαντες (having crossed over), ἦλθον (they came) ἐπὶ (to) τὴν (the) γῆν (land) εἰς (of) Γεννησαρέτ (Gennesaret). 35 καὶ (And) ἐπιγνόντες (having recognized) αὐτὸν (Him), οἱ (the) ἄνδρες (men) τοῦ (the) τόπου (place) ἐκείνου (of that) ἀπέστειλαν (sent) εἰς (to) ὅλην (all) τὴν (the) περίχωρον (surrounding region) ἐκείνην (that) καὶ (and) προσήνεγκαν (brought) αὐτῷ (to Him) πάντας (all) τοὺς (those) κακῶς (sick) ἔχοντας (being), 36 καὶ (and) παρεκάλουν (they were begging) αὐτὸν (Him) ἵνα (that) μόνον (only) ἅψωνται (they might touch) τοῦ (the) κρασπέδου (fringe) τοῦ (of the) ἱματίου (garment) αὐτοῦ (of Him); καὶ (and) ὅσοι (as many as) ἥψαντο (touched) διεσώθησαν (were cured). 15 1 Τότε (Then) προσέρχονται (come) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus) ἀπὸ (from) Ἱεροσολύμων (Jerusalem) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) καὶ (and) γραμματεῖς (scribes), λέγοντες (saying), 2 “Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) οἱ (the) μαθηταί (disciples) σου (of You) παραβαίνουσιν (break) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) τῶν (of the) πρεσβυτέρων (elders)? οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) νίπτονται (they wash) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) ‹αὐτῶν› (of them) ὅταν (when) ἄρτον (bread) ἐσθίωσιν (they shall eat).” 3 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) παραβαίνετε (break) τὴν (the) ἐντολὴν (commandment) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) ὑμῶν (of you)? 4 ὁ (-) γὰρ (For) Θεὸς (God) εἶπεν (commanded), ‘Τίμα (Honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (Father) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother)’ καί (and), ‘Ὁ (The one) κακολογῶν (speaking evil of) πατέρα (father) ἢ (or) μητέρα (mother), θανάτῳ (in death) τελευτάτω (must end).’ 5 ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) λέγετε (say), ‘Ὃς (Whoever) ἂν (-) εἴπῃ (shall say) τῷ (to the) πατρὶ (father) ἢ (or) τῇ (the) μητρί (mother), “Δῶρον (It is a gift), ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) ἐξ (by) ἐμοῦ (me) ὠφεληθῇς (you might be profited),” 6 οὐ (no) μὴ (not) τιμήσει (he shall honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) αὐτοῦ (of himself) 〈ἢ (or) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother) αὐτοῦ〉 (of himself).’ καὶ (And) ἠκυρώσατε (you made void) τὸν (the) λόγον (commandment) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) ὑμῶν (of you)! 7 ὑποκριταί (Hypocrites)! καλῶς (Rightly) ἐπροφήτευσεν (prophesied) περὶ (concerning) ὑμῶν (you) Ἠσαΐας (Isaiah), λέγων (saying), 8 ‘Ὁ (The) λαὸς (people) οὗτος (this), τοῖς (with the) χείλεσίν (lips) με (Me) τιμᾷ (it honors); Ἡ (the) δὲ (however) καρδία (heart) αὐτῶν (of them), πόρρω (far away) ἀπέχει (is kept) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me); 9 Μάτην (in vain) δὲ (then) σέβονταί (they worship) με (Me), Διδάσκοντες (teaching as) διδασκαλίας (doctrines) ἐντάλματα (the precepts) ἀνθρώπων (of men).’” 10 Καὶ (And) προσκαλεσάμενος (having called to Him) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd), εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἀκούετε (Hear) καὶ (and) συνίετε (understand)! 11 οὐ (Not) τὸ (what) εἰσερχόμενον (is entering) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) κοινοῖ (defiles) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man); ἀλλὰ (but) τὸ (that) ἐκπορευόμενον (going forth) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) στόματος (mouth), τοῦτο (this) κοινοῖ (defiles) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man).” 12 Τότε (Then) προσελθόντες (having come near), οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) λέγουσιν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Οἶδας (Know You) ὅτι (that) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), ἀκούσαντες (having heard) τὸν (the) λόγον (saying), ἐσκανδαλίσθησαν (were offended)?” 13 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said), “Πᾶσα (Every) φυτεία (plant) ἣν (that) οὐκ (not) ἐφύτευσεν (has planted) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me) ὁ (-) οὐράνιος (Heavenly), ἐκριζωθήσεται (it will be rooted up). 14 ἄφετε (Leave) αὐτούς (them)! τυφλοί (Blind) εἰσιν (they are) ὁδηγοί (guides) τυφλῶν (of the blind). τυφλὸς (Blind) δὲ (now) τυφλὸν (blind) ἐὰν (if) ὁδηγῇ (they lead), ἀμφότεροι (both) εἰς (into) βόθυνον (a pit) πεσοῦνται (will fall).” 15 Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (then), ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Φράσον (Explain) ἡμῖν (to us) τὴν (the) παραβολήν (parable) ‹ταύτην› (this).” 16 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said), “Ἀκμὴν (Still) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ἀσύνετοί (without understanding) ἐστε (are)? 17 οὐ (Not yet) νοεῖτε (understand you) ὅτι (that) πᾶν (everything) τὸ (-) εἰσπορευόμενον (entering) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth), εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κοιλίαν (stomach) χωρεῖ (goes), καὶ (and) εἰς (into) ἀφεδρῶνα (the sewer) ἐκβάλλεται (is cast out)? 18 τὰ (The things) δὲ (however) ἐκπορευόμενα (going forth) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) στόματος (mouth), ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) καρδίας (heart) ἐξέρχεται (come forth), κἀκεῖνα (and these) κοινοῖ (defile) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man). 19 ἐκ (Out of) γὰρ (for) τῆς (the) καρδίας (heart) ἐξέρχονται (come forth) διαλογισμοὶ (thoughts) πονηροί (evil), φόνοι (murders), μοιχεῖαι (adulteries), πορνεῖαι (sexual immorality), κλοπαί (thefts), ψευδομαρτυρίαι (false testimonies), βλασφημίαι (slanders). 20 ταῦτά (These) ἐστιν (are) τὰ (the things) κοινοῦντα (defiling) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man); τὸ (-) δὲ (but) ἀνίπτοις (with unwashed) χερσὶν (hands) φαγεῖν (to eat), οὐ (not) κοινοῖ (defiles) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man).” 21 Καὶ (And) ἐξελθὼν (having gone forth) ἐκεῖθεν (from there), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀνεχώρησεν (withdrew) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) μέρη (district) Τύρου (of Tyre) καὶ (and) Σιδῶνος (Sidon). 22 καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), γυνὴ (a woman) Χαναναία (Canaanite) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) ὁρίων (region) ἐκείνων (same), ἐξελθοῦσα (having approached), ἔκραζεν (was crying out), λέγουσα (saying), “Ἐλέησόν (Have mercy on) με (me), Κύριε (Lord), υἱὸς (Son) Δαυίδ (of David); ἡ (the) θυγάτηρ (daughter) μου (of me) κακῶς (miserably) δαιμονίζεται (is possessed by a demon).” 23 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) οὐκ (not) ἀπεκρίθη (He answered) αὐτῇ (her) λόγον (a word). καὶ (And) προσελθόντες (having come to him), οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἠρώτουν (were imploring) αὐτὸν (Him), λέγοντες (saying), “Ἀπόλυσον (Dismiss) αὐτήν (her), ὅτι (for) κράζει (she cries out) ὄπισθεν (after) ἡμῶν (us)!” 24 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said), “Οὐκ (Not) ἀπεστάλην (I was sent), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) πρόβατα (sheep) τὰ (-) ἀπολωλότα (being lost) οἴκου (of the house) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel).” 25 Ἡ (-) δὲ (And) ἐλθοῦσα (having come), προσεκύνει (she was worshiping) αὐτῷ (Him), λέγουσα (saying), “Κύριε (Lord), βοήθει (help) μοι (me)!” 26 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (He said), “Οὐκ (Not) ἔστιν (it is) καλὸν (right) λαβεῖν (to take) τὸν (the) ἄρτον (bread) τῶν (of the) τέκνων (children), καὶ (and) βαλεῖν (to cast it) τοῖς (to the) κυναρίοις (dogs).” 27 Ἡ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (she said), “Ναί (Yes), κύριε (Lord); καὶ (even) γὰρ (however) τὰ (the) κυνάρια (dogs) ἐσθίει (eat) ἀπὸ (of) τῶν (the) ψιχίων (crumbs) τῶν (-) πιπτόντων (falling) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) τραπέζης (table) τῶν (of the) κυρίων (masters) αὐτῶν (of them).” 28 Τότε (Then) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῇ (to her), “Ὦ (O) γύναι (woman), μεγάλη (great is) σου (of you) ἡ (the) πίστις (faith)! γενηθήτω (Be it) σοι (to you) ὡς (as) θέλεις (you desire).” καὶ (And) ἰάθη (was healed) ἡ (the) θυγάτηρ (daughter) αὐτῆς (of her) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) ὥρας (hour) ἐκείνης χωλούς (lame), κυλλούς (crippled), τυφλούς (blind), κωφούς (mute), καὶ (and) ἑτέρους (others) πολλούς (many), καὶ (and) ἔρριψαν* (they placed) αὐτοὺς (them) παρὰ (at) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) ἐθεράπευσεν (He healed) αὐτούς (them); 31 ὥστε (so that) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd) θαυμάσαι (marveled), βλέποντας (seeing) κωφοὺς (mute) λαλοῦντας (speaking), κυλλοὺς (crippled) ὑγιεῖς (restored), καὶ (and) χωλοὺς (lame) περιπατοῦντας (walking), καὶ (and) τυφλοὺς (blind) βλέποντας (seeing); καὶ (and) ἐδόξασαν (they glorified) τὸν (the) Θεὸν (God) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel). 32 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), προσκαλεσάμενος (having called to him) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), εἶπεν (said), “Σπλαγχνίζομαι (I am moved with compassion) ἐπὶ (toward) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd), ὅτι (because) ἤδη (already) ἡμέραι (days) τρεῖς (three) προσμένουσίν (they continue) μοι (with Me), καὶ (and) οὐκ (nothing) ἔχουσιν (have) τί (that) φάγωσιν (they might eat); καὶ (and) ἀπολῦσαι (to send away) αὐτοὺς (them) νήστεις (hungry), οὐ (not) θέλω (I am willing), μή‿ (not) ποτε (lest) ἐκλυθῶσιν (they faint) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (way).” 33 Καὶ (And) λέγουσιν (say) αὐτῷ (to Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταί (disciples), “Πόθεν (From where) ἡμῖν (to us) ἐν (in) ἐρημίᾳ (a secluded place), ἄρτοι (loaves) τοσοῦτοι (so many) ὥστε (as) χορτάσαι (to satisfy) ὄχλον (a crowd) τοσοῦτον (so great).” 34 Καὶ (And) λέγει (says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Πόσους (How many) ἄρτους (loaves) ἔχετε (have you)?” Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπαν (they said), “Ἑπτά (Seven), καὶ (and) ὀλίγα (a few) ἰχθύδια (small fish).” 35 Καὶ (And) παραγγείλας (He having commanded) τῷ (the) ὄχλῳ (crowds) ἀναπεσεῖν (to sit down) ἐπὶ (on) τὴν (the) γῆν (ground), 36 ἔλαβεν (having taken) τοὺς (the) ἑπτὰ δὲ (and the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) τοῖς (to the) ὄχλοις (crowd). 37 Καὶ (And) ἔφαγον (ate) πάντες (all) καὶ (and) ἐχορτάσθησαν (were satisfied); καὶ (and) τὸ (that) περισσεῦον (being over and above) τῶν (of the) κλασμάτων (fragments), ἦραν (they took up) ἑπτὰ (seven) σπυρίδας (baskets) πλήρεις (full). 38 οἱ (Those) δὲ (then) ἐσθίοντες (eating) ἦσαν (were) τετρακισχίλιοι (four thousand) ἄνδρες (men), χωρὶς (besides) γυναικῶν (women) καὶ (and) παιδίων (children). 39 Καὶ (And) ἀπολύσας (having dismissed) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds), ἐνέβη (He entered) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πλοῖον (boat) καὶ (and) ἦλθεν (came) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) ὅρια (region) Μαγαδάν (of Magadan). 16 1 Καὶ (And) προσελθόντες (having approached), οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) καὶ (and) Σαδδουκαῖοι (Sadducees), πειράζοντες (testing), ἐπηρώτησαν (asked) αὐτὸν (Him) σημεῖον (a sign) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) ἐπιδεῖξαι (to show) αὐτοῖς (them). 2 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ὀψίας (Evening) γενομένης (having come), λέγετε (you say), ‘Εὐδία (Fair weather); πυρράζει (is red) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) οὐρανός (sky).’ 3 καὶ (And) πρωΐ (in the morning), ‘Σήμερον (Today) χειμών (a storm); πυρράζει (is red) γὰρ (for) στυγνάζων (being overcast) ὁ (the) οὐρανός (sky).’ τὸ (The) μὲν (indeed) πρόσωπον (appearance) τοῦ (of the) οὐρανοῦ (sky) γινώσκετε (you know how) διακρίνειν (to discern), τὰ (-) δὲ (but) σημεῖα (the signs) τῶν (of the) καιρῶν (times), οὐ (not) δύνασθε (you are able)! 4 γενεὰ (A generation) πονηρὰ (evil) καὶ (and) μοιχαλὶς (adulterous), σημεῖον (a sign) ἐπιζητεῖ (seeks), καὶ (and) σημεῖον (a sign) οὐ (not) δοθήσεται (will be given) αὐτῇ (to it), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) τὸ (the) σημεῖον (sign) Ἰωνᾶ (of Jonah).” καὶ (And) καταλιπὼν (having left) αὐτοὺς (them), ἀπῆλθεν (He went away). 5 Καὶ (And) ἐλθόντες (having come) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) πέραν (other side), ἐπελάθοντο (they forgot) ἄρτους (bread) λαβεῖν (to take). 6 ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς οὔπω (Not yet) νοεῖτε (do you understand), οὐδὲ (nor) μνημονεύετε (remember) τοὺς (the) πέντε (five) ἄρτους (loaves) τῶν (for the) πεντακισχιλίων (five thousand), καὶ (and) πόσους (how many) κοφίνους (hand-baskets) ἐλάβετε (you gathered)? 10 οὐδὲ (Nor) τοὺς (the) ἑπτὰ (seven) ἄρτους (loaves) τῶν (for the) τετρακισχιλίων (four thousand), καὶ (and) πόσας (how many) σπυρίδας (baskets) ἐλάβετε (you gathered)? 11 πῶς (How) οὐ (not) νοεῖτε (understand you) ὅτι (that), οὐ (not) περὶ (concerning) ἄρτων (bread) εἶπον (I spoke) ὑμῖν (to you), προσέχετε (to beware) δὲ (also) ἀπὸ (of) τῆς (the) ζύμης Βαπτιστήν (Baptist); ἄλλοι (others) δὲ (now) Ἠλίαν (Elijah); ἕτεροι (others) δὲ (now) Ἰερεμίαν (Jeremiah), ἢ (or) ἕνα (one) τῶν (of the) προφητῶν (prophets).” 15 Λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them), (Christ), ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (of) Θεοῦ (God) τοῦ (the) ζῶντος (living).” 17 Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Μακάριος (Blessed) εἶ (are you), Σίμων (Simon) Βαριωνᾶ (Barjona)! ὅτι (For) σὰρξ (flesh) καὶ (and) αἷμα (blood) οὐκ (not) ἀπεκάλυψέν (revealed it) σοι (to you), ἀλλ’ (but) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me), ὁ (who is) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens). 18 κἀγὼ (I also) δέ (now) σοι (to you) λέγω (say) ὅτι (that) σὺ (you) εἶ (are) Πέτρος (Peter), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (on) ταύτῃ (this) τῇ (the) πέτρᾳ (rock) οἰκοδομήσω (I will build) μου (My) τὴν (-) ἐκκλησίαν (church), καὶ (and) πύλαι (the gates) ᾅδου (of hades) οὐ (not) κατισχύσουσιν (will prevail against) αὐτῆς (it). 19 δώσω (I will give) σοι (to you) τὰς (the) κλεῖδας (keys) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens); καὶ (and) ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) δήσῃς (you might bind) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), ἔσται (will be) δεδεμένον (bound) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens); καὶ (and) ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) λύσῃς (you might loose) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), ἔσται (will be) λελυμένον (loosed) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens).” 20 Τότε (Then) διεστείλατο* (instructed He) τοῖς (the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) ἵνα (that) μηδενὶ (to no one) εἴπωσιν (they should say) ὅτι (that) αὐτός (He) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ). 21 Ἀπὸ (From) τότε (that time) ἤρξατο (began) ‹ὁ› (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) δεικνύειν (to show) τοῖς (to the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ὅτι (that) δεῖ (it is necessary for) αὐτὸν (Him) εἰς (to) Ἱεροσόλυμα (Jerusalem) ἀπελθεῖν (to go away), καὶ (and) πολλὰ (many things) παθεῖν (to suffer) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) πρεσβυτέρων (elders) καὶ (and) ἀρχιερέων (chief priests) καὶ (and) γραμματέων (scribes), καὶ (began) ἐπιτιμᾶν (to rebuke) αὐτῷ (Him), λέγων (saying), “Ἵλεώς (Far be it) σοι (from You), Κύριε (Lord); οὐ (never), μὴ (not) ἔσται (will be) σοι (to You) τοῦτο (this).” 23 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) στραφεὶς (having turned) εἶπεν (He said) τῷ (-) Πέτρῳ (to Peter), “Ὕπαγε (Get) ὀπίσω (behind) μου (Me), Σατανᾶ (Satan)! σκάνδαλον (A stumbling block) εἶ (you are) ἐμοῦ (to Me). ὅτι (For) οὐ (not) φρονεῖς (your thoughts are of) τὰ (the things) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἀλλὰ (but) τὰ (the) τῶν (things) ἀνθρώπων (of men).” 24 Τότε (Then) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) τοῖς (to) μαθηταῖς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), “Εἴ (If) τις (anyone) θέλει (desires) ὀπίσω (after) μου (Me) ἐλθεῖν (to come), ἀπαρνησάσθω (let him deny) ἑαυτὸν (himself), καὶ (and) ἀράτω (take up) τὸν (the) σταυρὸν (cross) αὐτοῦ (of him), (however) ἂν (-) ἀπολέσῃ (might lose) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἕνεκεν (on account of) ἐμοῦ (Me), εὑρήσει (will find) αὐτήν (it). 26 τί (What) γὰρ (for) ὠφεληθήσεται (will it profit) ἄνθρωπος (a man), ἐὰν (if) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) ὅλον (whole) κερδήσῃ (he gains), τὴν (-) δὲ (but) ψυχὴν (the soul) αὐτοῦ (of him) ζημιωθῇ (loses)? ἢ (Or) τί (what) δώσει (will give) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἀντάλλαγμα (as an exchange for) τῆς (the) ψυχῆς (soul) αὐτοῦ (of him)? 27 μέλλει (Is about) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (of the) ἀνθρώπου (man) ἔρχεσθαι (to come) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) δόξῃ (glory) τοῦ (the) Πατρὸς (Father) αὐτοῦ (of Him), μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) ἀγγέλων (angels) αὐτοῦ (of Him); καὶ (and) τότε (then) ἀποδώσει (He will give) ἑκάστῳ (to each) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) πρᾶξιν (deeds) αὐτοῦ (of him). 28 Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (-), εἰσίν (there are) τινες (some) τῶν (of those) ὧδε (here) ἑστώτων (standing) οἵτινες (who) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) γεύσωνται Καὶ (And) μεθ’ (after) ἡμέρας (days) ἓξ (six), παραλαμβάνει (takes with Him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), τὸν (-) Πέτρον (Peter) καὶ (and) Ἰάκωβον (James) καὶ (and) Ἰωάννην (John), τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ἀναφέρει (brings up) αὐτοὺς (them) εἰς (into) ὄρος (a mountain) ὑψηλὸν (high) κατ’ (by) ἰδίαν (themselves). 2 καὶ (And) μετεμορφώθη (He was transfigured) ἔμπροσθεν (before) αὐτῶν (them), καὶ (and) ἔλαμψεν (shone) τὸ (the) πρόσωπον (face) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ὡς (like) ὁ (the) ἥλιος (sun), τὰ (-) δὲ (and) ἱμάτια (the clothes) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐγένετο (became) λευκὰ (white) ὡς (as) τὸ (the) φῶς (light). 3 Καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), ὤφθη (appeared) αὐτοῖς (to them) Μωϋσῆς (Moses) καὶ (and) Ἠλίας (Elijah), συλλαλοῦντες* (talking) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him). 4 ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) εἶπεν (said) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus), “Κύριε (Lord), καλόν (good) ἐστιν (it is) ἡμᾶς (for us) ὧδε (here) εἶναι (to be). εἰ (If) θέλεις (You wish), ποιήσω (I will make) ὧδε (here) τρεῖς (three) σκηνάς (tabernacles), σοὶ (for You) μίαν (one), καὶ (and) Μωϋσεῖ (for Moses) μίαν (one), καὶ (and) Ἠλίᾳ (for Elijah) μίαν (one).” 5 Ἔτι (While yet) αὐτοῦ (he) λαλοῦντος (was speaking), ἰδοὺ (behold), νεφέλη (a cloud) φωτεινὴ (bright) ἐπεσκίασεν (overshadowed) αὐτούς (them); καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold), φωνὴ (a voice) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) νεφέλης (cloud), λέγουσα (saying), “Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱός (Son) μου (of Me), ὁ (the) ἀγαπητός (beloved), ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) εὐδόκησα (I am well pleased). ἀκούετε (Listen) αὐτοῦ (to Him)!” 6 καὶ (And) ἀκούσαντες (having heard it), οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) ἔπεσαν (fell) ἐπὶ (upon) πρόσωπον (face) αὐτῶν (of them) καὶ (and) ἐφοβήθησαν (were terrified) σφόδρα (greatly). 7 Καὶ (And) προσῆλθεν (having come to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἁψάμενος (having touched) αὐτῶν (them), εἶπεν (He said), “Ἐγέρθητε (Rise up), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) φοβεῖσθε (be afraid).” 8 ἐπάραντες (Having lifted up) δὲ (and) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) αὐτῶν (of them), οὐδένα (no one) εἶδον (they saw) εἰ (if) μὴ (not) αὐτὸν (Himself) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) μόνον (alone). 9 Καὶ (And) καταβαινόντων (as were descending) αὐτῶν (they) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) ὄρους (mountain), ἐνετείλατο (instructed) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), λέγων (saying), “Μηδενὶ (To no one) εἴπητε (tell) τὸ (the) ὅραμα (vision), ἕως (until) οὗ (that) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) ἐγερθῇ (is risen).” 10 Καὶ (And) ἐπηρώτησαν (asked) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples), λέγοντες (saying), “Τί (Why) οὖν (then) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) λέγουσιν (say) ὅτι (that) Ἠλίαν (Elijah) δεῖ (it behooves) ἐλθεῖν (to come) πρῶτον (first)?” 11 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (He said), “Ἠλίας (Elijah) μὲν (indeed) ἔρχεται (comes), καὶ (and) ἀποκαταστήσει (will restore) πάντα (all things). 12 λέγω (I say) δὲ (however) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) Ἠλίας (Elijah) ἤδη (already) ἦλθεν (is come), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐπέγνωσαν (they knew) αὐτὸν (him), ἀλλὰ* (but) ἐποίησαν (did) ἐν (to) αὐτῷ (him) ὅσα (whatever) ἠθέλησαν (they desired). οὕτως (Thus) καὶ (also), ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) μέλλει (is about) πάσχειν (to suffer) ὑπ’ (from) αὐτῶν (them).” 13 τότε (Then) συνῆκαν (understood) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) ὅτι (that) περὶ (concerning) Ἰωάννου (John) τοῦ (the) Βαπτιστοῦ (Baptist) εἶπεν (He spoke) αὐτοῖς (to them). 14 Καὶ (And) ἐλθόντων (they having come) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd), προσῆλθεν (came) αὐτῷ (to Him) ἄνθρωπος (a man) γονυπετῶν (kneeling down to) αὐτὸν (Him) 15 καὶ (and) λέγων (saying), “Κύριε (Lord), ἐλέησόν (have mercy on) μου (my) τὸν (-) υἱόν (son), ὅτι (for) σεληνιάζεται (he is epileptic) καὶ (and) κακῶς (miserably) πάσχει* (suffers); πολλάκις (often) γὰρ (for) πίπτει (he falls) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πῦρ (fire), καὶ (and) πολλάκις (often) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ὕδωρ (water). 16 καὶ (And) προσήνεγκα (I brought) αὐτὸν (him) τοῖς (to the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) σου (of You), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἠδυνήθησαν (they were able) αὐτὸν (him) θεραπεῦσαι (to heal).” 17 Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said), “Ὦ (O) γενεὰ (generation) ἄπιστος (unbelieving) καὶ (and) διεστραμμένη (perverted), ἕως (how long) πότε (when) μεθ’ (with) ὑμῶν (you) ἔσομαι (will I be)? ἕως (How long) πότε (when) ἀνέξομαι (will I bear with) ὑμῶν (you)? φέρετέ (Bring) μοι (to Me) αὐτὸν (him) ὧδε (here).” 18 καὶ (And) ἐπετίμησεν (rebuked) αὐτῷ (him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), καὶ (and) ἐξῆλθεν (went out) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (him) τὸ (the) δαιμόνιον (demon), καὶ (and) ἐθεραπεύθη (was healed) ὁ (the) παῖς (boy) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) ὥρας (hour) ἐκείνης (that). 19 Τότε (Then) προσελθόντες (having come) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus) κατ’ (in) ἰδίαν (private), εἶπον (they said), “Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) ἡμεῖς (we) οὐκ (not) ἠδυνήθημεν (were able) ἐκβαλεῖν (to cast out) αὐτό (it)?” 20 Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) λέγει (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Διὰ (Because of) τὴν (the) ὀλιγοπιστίαν (little faith) ὑμῶν (of you). ἀμὴν (Truly) γὰρ (for) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐὰν (If) ἔχητε (you have) πίστιν (faith) ὡς (as) κόκκον (a seed) σινάπεως (of mustard), ἐρεῖτε (you will say) τῷ (to the) ὄρει (mountain) τούτῳ (to this), ‘Μετάβα (Move) ἔνθεν (from here) ἐκεῖ (to there),’ καὶ (and) μεταβήσεται (it will move). καὶ (And) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἀδυνατήσει (will be impossible) ὑμῖν (for you).” 21 22 Συστρεφομένων (Were abiding) δὲ (now) αὐτῶν (they) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) Γαλιλαίᾳ (Galilee), εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Μέλλει (Is about) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) παραδίδοσθαι (to be betrayed) εἰς (into) χεῖρας (the hands) ἀνθρώπων (of men), 23 καὶ (and) ἀποκτενοῦσιν (they will kill) αὐτόν (Him), καὶ (and) τῇ (on the) τρίτῃ (third) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ἐγερθήσεται (He will be raised up).” καὶ (And) ἐλυπήθησαν (they were grieved) σφόδρα (deeply). 24 Ἐλθόντων (Having come) δὲ (now) αὐτῶν (they) εἰς (to) Καφαρναοὺμ (Capernaum), προσῆλθον (came) οἱ (those) τὰ (the) δίδραχμα (didrachmas) λαμβάνοντες (collecting) τῷ (-) Πέτρῳ (to Peter) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said), “Ὁ (The) διδάσκαλος (Teacher) ὑμῶν (of you) οὐ (not) τελεῖ (does he pay) ‹τὰ› (the) δίδραχμα (didrachmas)?” 25 Λέγει (He says), “Ναί (Yes).” Καὶ (And) ἐλθόντα (he having entered) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) οἰκίαν (house), προέφθασεν (anticipated) αὐτὸν (him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), λέγων (saying), “Τί (What) σοι (you) δοκεῖ (do think), Σίμων (Simon)? οἱ (The) βασιλεῖς (kings) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth), ἀπὸ (from) τίνων (whom) λαμβάνουσιν (do they receive) τέλη (custom) ἢ (or) κῆνσον (tribute)? ἀπὸ (From) τῶν (the) υἱῶν (sons) αὐτῶν (of them), ἢ (or) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (-) ἀλλοτρίων (strangers)?” 26 Εἰπόντος (He having said) δέ (now), “Ἀπὸ (From) τῶν (the) ἀλλοτρίων (strangers),” ἔφη (said) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἄρα¦Γε (Then) ἐλεύθεροί (free) εἰσιν (are) οἱ (the) υἱοί (sons). 27 ἵνα (That) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) σκανδαλίσωμεν (we might offend) αὐτούς (them), πορευθεὶς (having gone) εἰς (to) θάλασσαν (sea), βάλε (cast) ἄγκιστρον (a hook), καὶ (and) τὸν (the) ἀναβάντα (having come up) πρῶτον (first) ἰχθὺν (fish) ἆρον (take), καὶ (and) ἀνοίξας (having opened) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) αὐτοῦ (of it), εὑρήσεις (you will find) στατῆρα (a four-drachma coin). ἐκεῖνον (That) λαβὼν (having taken), δὸς (give) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἀντὶ (for) ἐμοῦ (Me) καὶ (and) σοῦ (yourself).” 18 1 Ἐν (In) ἐκείνῃ (that) τῇ (-) ὥρᾳ (hour) προσῆλθον (came) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus), λέγοντες (saying), “Τίς (Who) ἄρα (then) μείζων (the greatest) ἐστὶν (is) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens)?” 2 Καὶ (And) προσκαλεσάμενος (having called to Him) παιδίον (a child), ἔστησεν (He set) αὐτὸ (it) ἐν (in) μέσῳ (midst) αὐτῶν (of them), 3 καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said), “Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) στραφῆτε (you turn) καὶ (and) γένησθε (become) ὡς (as) τὰ (the) παιδία (little children), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) εἰσέλθητε (shall you enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens). 4 ὅστις (Whoever) οὖν (therefore) ταπεινώσει (will humble) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ὡς (as) τὸ (the) παιδίον (little child) τοῦτο (this), οὗτός (he) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) μείζων (greatest) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens). 5 καὶ (And) ὃς (whoever) ἐὰν (if) δέξηται (shall receive) ἓν (one) παιδίον (little child) τοιοῦτο (such) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me), ἐμὲ (Me) δέχεται (receives). 6 Ὃς (Whoever) δ’ (then) ἂν (-) σκανδαλίσῃ (shall cause to stumble) ἕνα (one) τῶν (of the) μικρῶν (little ones) τούτων (of these) τῶν (-) πιστευόντων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμέ (Me), συμφέρει (it is better) αὐτῷ (for him) ἵνα (that) κρεμασθῇ (should be hung) μύλος (a millstone) ὀνικὸς (heavy) περὶ (around) τὸν (the) τράχηλον (neck) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) καταποντισθῇ (he be sunk) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) πελάγει (depth) τῆς (of the) θαλάσσης (sea). 7 Οὐαὶ (Woe) τῷ (to the) κόσμῳ (world) ἀπὸ (because of) τῶν (the) σκανδάλων (causes of sin). ἀνάγκη (Necessary are) γὰρ (for) ἐλθεῖν (to come) τὰ (the) σκάνδαλα (stumbling blocks), πλὴν (but) οὐαὶ (woe) τῷ (to the) ἀνθρώπῳ (man) δι’ (by) οὗ (whom) τὸ (the) σκάνδαλον (offense) ἔρχεται (comes)! 8 Εἰ (If) δὲ (now) ἡ (the) χείρ (hand) σου (of you) ἢ (or) ὁ (the) πούς (foot) σου (of you) σκανδαλίζει (causes to sin) σε (you), ἔκκοψον (cut off) αὐτὸν (it) καὶ (and) βάλε (cast it) ἀπὸ (from) σοῦ (you); καλόν (better) σοί (for you) ἐστιν (it is) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (-) ζωὴν (life) κυλλὸν (crippled) ἢ (or) χωλόν (lame), ἢ (than) δύο (two) χεῖρας (hands) ἢ (or) δύο (two) πόδας (feet) ἔχοντα (having), βληθῆναι (to be cast) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πῦρ (fire) τὸ (-) αἰώνιον (eternal). 9 καὶ (And) εἰ (if) ὁ (the) ὀφθαλμός (eye) σου (of you) σκανδαλίζει (causes to sin) σε (you), ἔξελε (gouge out) αὐτὸν (it) καὶ (and) βάλε (cast it) ἀπὸ (from) σοῦ (you); καλόν (better) σοί (for you) ἐστιν (it is) μονόφθαλμον (one-eyed) εἰς (into) τὴν (-) ζωὴν (life) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter), ἢ (than) δύο (two) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) ἔχοντα (having) βληθῆναι (to be cast) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) γέενναν (hell) τοῦ (of the) πυρός (fire). 10 Ὁρᾶτε (See that) μὴ (not) καταφρονήσητε (you despise) ἑνὸς (one) τῶν (of the) μικρῶν (little ones) τούτων (of these). λέγω (I say) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) οἱ (the) ἄγγελοι (angels) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐν (in) οὐρανοῖς (the heavens) διὰ (continually) παντὸς (always) βλέπουσι (behold) τὸ (the) πρόσωπον (face) τοῦ (of the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of me), τοῦ (who is) ἐν (in) οὐρανοῖς (the heavens). 11 12 Τί (What) ὑμῖν (you) δοκεῖ (do think)? ἐὰν (If) γένηταί (there should be) τινι (to any) ἀνθρώπῳ (man) ἑκατὸν (a hundred) πρόβατα (sheep), καὶ (and) πλανηθῇ (has gone astray) ἓν (one) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them), οὐχὶ (not) ἀφήσει (will he leave) τὰ (the) ἐνενήκοντα (ninety) ἐννέα (nine) ἐπὶ (on) τὰ (the) ὄρη (mountains), καὶ (and) πορευθεὶς (having gone), ζητεῖ (seek) τὸ (the one) πλανώμενον (going astray)? 13 καὶ (And) ἐὰν (if) γένηται (he should) εὑρεῖν (find) αὐτό (it), ἀμὴν (truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) χαίρει (he rejoices) ἐπ’ (over) αὐτῷ (it) μᾶλλον (more) ἢ (than) ἐπὶ (over) τοῖς (the) ἐνενήκοντα (ninety) ἐννέα (nine) τοῖς (-) μὴ (not) πεπλανημένοις (having gone astray). 14 οὕτως (Thus) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (it is) θέλημα (the will) ἔμπροσθεν (of) τοῦ (the) Πατρὸς (Father) ὑμῶν (of you) τοῦ (who is) ἐν (in) οὐρανοῖς (the heavens), ἵνα (that) ἀπόληται (should perish) ἓν (one) τῶν (of the) μικρῶν (little ones) τούτων (of these). 15 Ἐὰν (If) δὲ (now) ἁμαρτήσῃ (sins) ‹εἰς (against) σὲ› (you) ὁ (the) ἀδελφός (brother) σου (of you), ὕπαγε (go) ἔλεγξον (reprove) αὐτὸν (him), μεταξὺ (between) σοῦ (you) καὶ (and) αὐτοῦ (him) μόνου (alone). ἐάν (If) σου (you) ἀκούσῃ (he will hear), ἐκέρδησας (you have gained) τὸν (the) ἀδελφόν (brother) σου (of you). 16 ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) ἀκούσῃ (he will hear), παράλαβε (take) μετὰ (with) σοῦ (you) ἔτι (more), ἕνα (one) ἢ (or) δύο (two), ἵνα (that) ‘Ἐπὶ (upon) στόματος (the testimony) δύο (of two) μαρτύρων (witnesses) ἢ (or) τριῶν (of three), σταθῇ (may be strengthened) πᾶν (every) ῥῆμα (word).’ 17 ἐὰν (If) δὲ (now) παρακούσῃ (he fails to listen) αὐτῶν (to them), εἰπὸν (tell it) τῇ (to the) ἐκκλησίᾳ (church). ἐὰν (If) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) τῆς (to the) ἐκκλησίας (church) παρακούσῃ (he fails to listen), ἔστω (let him be) σοι (to you) ὥσπερ (as) ὁ (the) ἐθνικὸς (pagan) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) τελώνης (tax collector). 18 Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅσα (how many) ἐὰν (if) δήσητε (you shall bind) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), ἔσται (shall have been) δεδεμένα (bound) ἐν (in) οὐρανῷ (heaven); καὶ (and) ὅσα (how many) ἐὰν (if) λύσητε (you shall loose) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), ἔσται (shall have been) λελυμένα (loosed) ἐν (in) οὐρανῷ (heaven). 19 Πάλιν (Again) ἀμὴν (truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) ἐὰν (if) δύο (two) συμφωνήσωσιν (might agree) ἐξ (of) ὑμῶν (you) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth) περὶ (concerning) παντὸς (any) πράγματος (matter), οὗ (that) ἐὰν (if) αἰτήσωνται (they shall ask), γενήσεται (it will be done) αὐτοῖς (for them) παρὰ (by) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me) τοῦ (who is) ἐν (in) οὐρανοῖς (the heavens). 20 οὗ (Where) γάρ (for) εἰσιν (are) δύο (two) ἢ (or) τρεῖς (three) συνηγμένοι (gathered together) εἰς (unto) τὸ (-) ἐμὸν (My) ὄνομα (name), ἐκεῖ (there) εἰμι (am I) ἐν (in) μέσῳ (the midst) αὐτῶν (of them).” 21 Τότε (Then) προσελθὼν (having come), «ὁ (-) Πέτρος (Peter) εἶπεν» (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Κύριε (Lord), ποσάκις (how often) ἁμαρτήσει (will sin) εἰς (against) ἐμὲ (me) ὁ (the) ἀδελφός (brother) μου (of me), καὶ (and) ἀφήσω (I will forgive) αὐτῷ (him)? ἕως (Up to) ἑπτάκις (seven times)?” 22 Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Οὐ (Not) λέγω (I say) σοι (to you) ἕως (up to) ἑπτάκις (seven times), ἀλλὰ (but) ἕως (up to) ἑβδομηκοντάκις (seventy times) ἑπτά (seven)! 23 Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ὡμοιώθη (has become like) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) ἀνθρώπῳ (to a man), βασιλεῖ (a king), ὃς (who) ἠθέλησεν (desired) συνᾶραι (to settle) λόγον (accounts) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) δούλων (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him). 24 ἀρξαμένου (Having begun) δὲ (then) αὐτοῦ (he) συναίρειν (to settle), προσηνέχθη* (was brought) εἷς (one) αὐτῷ (to him), ὀφειλέτης (a debtor) μυρίων (of ten thousand) ταλάντων (talents). 25 μὴ (Nothing) ἔχοντος (having) δὲ (now) αὐτοῦ (he) ἀποδοῦναι (to pay), ἐκέλευσεν (commanded) αὐτὸν (him) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) πραθῆναι (to be sold), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children), καὶ (and) πάντα (all) ὅσα (as many as) ἔχει (he had), καὶ (and) ἀποδοθῆναι (payment to be made). 26 Πεσὼν (Having fallen down) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (the) δοῦλος (servant) προσεκύνει (was bowing on his knees) αὐτῷ (to him), λέγων (saying), ‘Μακροθύμησον (Have patience) ἐπ’ (with) ἐμοί (me), καὶ (and) πάντα (all) ἀποδώσω (I will pay) σοι (to you).’ 27 Σπλαγχνισθεὶς (Having been moved with compassion) δὲ (now), ὁ (the) κύριος (master) τοῦ (of the) δούλου (servant) ἐκείνου (that) ἀπέλυσεν (released) αὐτόν (him), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) δάνειον (debt) ἀφῆκεν (forgave) αὐτῷ (him). 28 Ἐξελθὼν (Having gone out) δὲ (however), ὁ (the) δοῦλος (servant) ἐκεῖνος (same) εὗρεν (found) ἕνα (one) τῶν (the) συνδούλων (fellow servants) αὐτοῦ (of him) ὃς (who) ὤφειλεν (was owing) αὐτῷ (him) ἑκατὸν (a hundred) δηνάρια (denarii), καὶ (and) κρατήσας (having seized) αὐτὸν (him) ἔπνιγεν (he was throttling him), λέγων (saying), ‘Ἀπόδος (Pay) εἴ (if) τι (any) ὀφείλεις (you owe).’ 29 Πεσὼν (Having fallen down) οὖν (therefore), ὁ (the) σύνδουλος (fellow servant) αὐτοῦ (of him) παρεκάλει (was begging) αὐτὸν (him), λέγων (saying), ‘Μακροθύμησον (Have patience) ἐπ’ (with) ἐμοί (me), καὶ (and) ἀποδώσω (I will pay) σοι (you).’ 30 Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) οὐκ (not) ἤθελεν (he was willing), ἀλλὰ (rather) ἀπελθὼν (having gone), ἔβαλεν (he cast) αὐτὸν (him) εἰς (into) φυλακὴν (prison), ἕως (until) ‹οὗ› (that) ἀποδῷ (he should pay) τὸ (that which) ὀφειλόμενον (was owing). 31 Ἰδόντες (Having seen) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) σύνδουλοι (fellow servants) αὐτοῦ (of him) τὰ (the things) γενόμενα (having taken place), ἐλυπήθησαν (they were grieved) σφόδρα (deeply), καὶ (and) ἐλθόντες (having gone), διεσάφησαν (narrated) τῷ (to) κυρίῳ (master) ἑαυτῶν (of themselves) πάντα (all) τὰ (that) γενόμενα (having taken place). 32 Τότε (Then) προσκαλεσάμενος (having called to) αὐτὸν (him), ὁ (the) κύριος (master) αὐτοῦ (of him) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to him), ‘Δοῦλε (Servant) πονηρέ (evil), πᾶσαν (all) τὴν (the) ὀφειλὴν (debt) ἐκείνην (that) ἀφῆκά (I forgave) σοι (you), ἐπεὶ (because) παρεκάλεσάς (you begged) με (me). 33 οὐκ (Not) ἔδει (did it behoove) καὶ (also) σὲ (you) ἐλεῆσαι (to have pitied) τὸν (the) σύνδουλόν (fellow servant) σου (of you), ὡς (as) κἀγὼ (also I) σὲ (you) ἠλέησα (had pitied)?’ 34 καὶ (And) ὀργισθεὶς (having been angry), ὁ (the) κύριος (master) αὐτοῦ (of him) παρέδωκεν (delivered) αὐτὸν (him) τοῖς (to the) βασανισταῖς (jailers), ἕως (until) οὗ (that) ἀποδῷ (he should pay) πᾶν (all) τὸ (-) ὀφειλόμενον (being owed) 〈αὐτῷ〉 (to him). 35 Οὕτως (Thus) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me) ὁ (-) οὐράνιος (Heavenly) ποιήσει (will do) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ἀφῆτε (you forgive) ἕκαστος (each) τῷ (the) ἀδελφῷ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) καρδιῶν (heart) ὑμῶν (of you).” 19 1 Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass), ὅτε (when) ἐτέλεσεν (had finished) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) τοὺς (the) λόγους (words) τούτους (these), μετῆρεν (He withdrew) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (Galilee) καὶ (and) ἦλθεν (came) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) ὅρια (region) τῆς (-) Ἰουδαίας (of Judea) πέραν (beyond) τοῦ (the) Ἰορδάνου (Jordan). 2 καὶ (And) ἠκολούθησαν (followed) αὐτῷ (Him) ὄχλοι (crowds) πολλοί (great), καὶ (and) ἐθεράπευσεν (He healed) αὐτοὺς (them) ἐκεῖ (there).
