Luke 1:35-80 Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), ὁ (the) ἄγγελος (angel) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῇ (to her), “Πνεῦμα (the Spirit) Ἅγιον (Holy) ἐπελεύσεται (will come) ἐπὶ (upon) σέ (you), καὶ (and) δύναμις (power) Ὑψίστου (of the Most High) ἐπισκιάσει (will overshadow) σοι (you); διὸ (therefore) καὶ (also) τὸ (the) γεννώμενον (being born) ἅγιον (Holy One) κληθήσεται (will be called) Υἱὸς (the Son) Θεοῦ (of God).

διὸ (therefore) καὶ (also) τὸ (the) γεννώμενον (being born) ἅγιον (Holy One) κληθήσεται (will be called) Υἱὸς (the Son) Θεοῦ (of God). ³⁶ καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), Ἐλισάβετ (Elizabeth), ἡ (the) συγγενίς (relative) σου (of you), καὶ (also) αὐτὴ (she) συνείληφεν (has conceived) υἱὸν (a son) ἐν (in) γήρει (old age) αὐτῆς (her), καὶ (and) οὗτος (this) μὴν (month) ἕκτος (the sixth) ἐστὶν (is) αὐτῇ (to her) τῇ (who) καλουμένῃ (was called) στείρᾳ (barren). ³⁷ ὅτι (For) οὐκ (not) ἀδυνατήσει (will be impossible) παρὰ (with) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) πᾶν (every) ῥῆμα (thing).” ³⁸ Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) Μαριάμ (Mary), “Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἡ (the) δούλη (handmaid) Κυρίου (of the Lord). γένοιτό (May it happen) μοι (to me) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) ῥῆμά (word) σου (of you).” καὶ (And) ἀπῆλθεν (departed) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτῆς (her) ὁ (the) ἄγγελος (angel). ³⁹ Ἀναστᾶσα (Having risen up) δὲ (then) Μαριὰμ (Mary) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) ταύταις (this), ἐπορεύθη (she went) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) ὀρεινὴν (hill country) μετὰ (with) σπουδῆς (haste), εἰς (to) πόλιν (a town) Ἰούδα (of Judah), ⁴⁰ καὶ (and) εἰσῆλθεν (she entered) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) Ζαχαρίου (of Zechariah) καὶ (and) ἠσπάσατο (greeted) τὴν (-) Ἐλισάβετ (Elizabeth). ⁴¹ καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass), ὡς (as) ἤκουσεν (heard) τὸν (the) ἀσπασμὸν (greeting) τῆς (-) Μαρίας (of Mary) ἡ (-) Ἐλισάβετ (Elizabeth), ἐσκίρτησεν (leaped) τὸ (the) βρέφος (baby) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) κοιλίᾳ (womb) αὐτῆς (of her); καὶ (and) ἐπλήσθη (was filled) Πνεύματος (with the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy) ἡ (-) Ἐλισάβετ (Elizabeth), ⁴² καὶ (and) ἀνεφώνησεν (she cried out) κραυγῇ (in a voice) μεγάλῃ (loud) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said), “Εὐλογημένη (Blessed are) σὺ (you) ἐν (among) γυναιξίν (women), καὶ (and) εὐλογημένος (blessed is) ὁ (the) καρπὸς (fruit) τῆς (of the) κοιλίας (womb) σου (of you). ⁴³ καὶ (And) πόθεν (from where) μοι (to me) τοῦτο (this), ἵνα (that) ἔλθῃ (should come) ἡ (the) μήτηρ (mother) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) μου (of me) πρὸς (to) ἐμέ (me)? ⁴⁴ ἰδοὺ (Behold) γὰρ (for), ὡς (as) ἐγένετο (came) ἡ (the) φωνὴ (voice) τοῦ (of the) ἀσπασμοῦ (greeting) σου (of you) εἰς (into) τὰ (the) ὦτά (ears) μου (of me), ἐσκίρτησεν (leaped) ἐν (in) ἀγαλλιάσει (exultation) τὸ (the) βρέφος (baby) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) κοιλίᾳ (womb) μου (of me). ⁴⁵ καὶ (And) μακαρία (blessed is) ἡ (the one) πιστεύσασα (having believed) ὅτι (that) ἔσται (there will be) τελείωσις (a fulfillment) τοῖς (to the things) λελαλημένοις (spoken) αὐτῇ (to her) παρὰ (from) Κυρίου (the Lord).” ⁴⁶ Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (said) Μαριάμ (Mary): “Μεγαλύνει (Magnifies) ἡ (the) ψυχή (soul) μου (of Me) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord), ⁴⁷ καὶ (and) ἠγαλλίασεν (rejoices) τὸ (the) πνεῦμά (spirit) μου (of me) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God), τῷ (the) Σωτῆρί (Savior) μου (of me). ⁴⁸ ὅτι (For) ἐπέβλεψεν (He has looked) ἐπὶ (upon) τὴν (the) ταπείνωσιν (humiliation) τῆς (of the) δούλης (handmaiden) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ἰδοὺ (Behold) γὰρ (for) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) νῦν (henceforth) μακαριοῦσίν (will count blessed) με (me) πᾶσαι (all) αἱ (the) γενεαί (generations). ⁴⁹ ὅτι (For) ἐποίησέν (has done) μοι (to me) μεγάλα (great things) ὁ (the) δυνατός (Mighty One). καὶ (And) ἅγιον (holy is) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ⁵⁰ καὶ (And) τὸ (the) ἔλεος (mercy) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (is to) γενεὰς (generations) καὶ (and) γενεὰς (generations), τοῖς (to those) φοβουμένοις (fearing) αὐτόν (Him). ⁵¹ Ἐποίησεν (He has shown) κράτος (strength) ἐν (with) βραχίονι (the arm) αὐτοῦ (of Him), διεσκόρπισεν (He has scattered) ὑπερηφάνους (the proud) διανοίᾳ (in the thought) καρδίας (of heart) αὐτῶν (of them). ⁵² καθεῖλεν (He has brought down) δυνάστας (rulers) ἀπὸ (from) θρόνων (thrones), καὶ (and) ὕψωσεν (exalted) ταπεινούς (the humble). ⁵³ πεινῶντας (Those hungering) ἐνέπλησεν (He has filled) ἀγαθῶν (with good things), καὶ (and) πλουτοῦντας (those being rich) ἐξαπέστειλεν (He has sent away) κενούς (empty). ⁵⁴ ἀντελάβετο (He has helped) Ἰσραὴλ (Israel) παιδὸς (the servant) αὐτοῦ (of Him), μνησθῆναι (remembering) ἐλέους (mercy), ⁵⁵ καθὼς (as) ἐλάλησεν (He spoke) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) πατέρας (fathers) ἡμῶν (of us), τῷ (-) Ἀβραὰμ (to Abraham) καὶ (and) τῷ (to the) σπέρματι (descendants) αὐτοῦ (of him) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age).” ⁵⁶ Ἔμεινεν (Dwelt) δὲ (then) Μαριὰμ (Mary) σὺν (with) αὐτῇ (her) ὡς (about) μῆνας (months) τρεῖς (three), καὶ (and) ὑπέστρεψεν (returned) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) οἶκον (home) αὐτῆς (of her). ⁵⁷ Τῇ (To) δὲ (now) Ἐλισάβετ (Elizabeth) ἐπλήσθη (was fulfilled) ὁ (the) χρόνος (time) τοῦ (-) τεκεῖν (to give birth) αὐτήν (for her), καὶ (and) ἐγέννησεν (she bore) υἱόν (a son). ⁵⁸ καὶ (And) ἤκουσαν (heard) οἱ (the) περίοικοι (neighbors) καὶ (and) οἱ (-) συγγενεῖς (relatives) αὐτῆς (of her) ὅτι (that) ἐμεγάλυνεν (was magnifying) Κύριος (the Lord) τὸ (the) ἔλεος (mercy) αὐτοῦ (of Him) μετ’ (with) αὐτῆς (her), καὶ (and) συνέχαιρον (they were rejoicing with) αὐτῇ (her). ⁵⁹ Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) ἐν (on) τῇ (-) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τῇ (the) ὀγδόῃ (eighth), ἦλθον (they came) περιτεμεῖν (to circumcise) τὸ (the) παιδίον (child), καὶ (and) ἐκάλουν (were calling) αὐτὸ (it) ἐπὶ (after) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τοῦ (of the) πατρὸς (father) αὐτοῦ (of him), Ζαχαρίαν (Zechariah). ⁶⁰ καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεῖσα (answering), ἡ (the) μήτηρ (mother) αὐτοῦ (of him) εἶπεν (said), “Οὐχί (No), ἀλλὰ (but) κληθήσεται (he will be called) Ἰωάννης (John).” ⁶¹ Καὶ (And) εἶπαν (they said) πρὸς (to) αὐτὴν (her) ὅτι (-), “Οὐδείς (No one) ἐστιν (is) ἐκ (among) τῆς (the) συγγενείας (relatives) σου (of you), ὃς (who) καλεῖται (is called) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τούτῳ (by this).” ⁶² ἐνένευον (They were making signs) δὲ (then) τῷ (to the) πατρὶ (father) αὐτοῦ (of him), τὸ (the) τί (what) ἂν (-) θέλοι (he might wish) καλεῖσθαι (to be called) αὐτό (him). ⁶³ Καὶ (And) αἰτήσας (having asked for) πινακίδιον (a writing tablet), ἔγραψεν (he wrote), λέγων (saying), “Ἰωάννης (John) ἐστὶν (is) ὄνομα (the name) αὐτοῦ (of him).” καὶ (And) ἐθαύμασαν (they marveled) πάντες (all). ⁶⁴ ἀνεῴχθη (Was opened) δὲ (then) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) αὐτοῦ (of him) παραχρῆμα (immediately), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) γλῶσσα (tongue) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ἐλάλει (he was speaking), εὐλογῶν (blessing) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God). ⁶⁵ Καὶ (And) ἐγένετο (came) ἐπὶ (upon) πάντας (all) φόβος (fear), τοὺς (those) περιοικοῦντας (dwelling around) αὐτούς (them); καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) ὀρεινῇ (hill country) τῆς (-) Ἰουδαίας (of Judea) διελαλεῖτο (were being talked about) πάντα (all) τὰ (the things), ῥήματα (words) ταῦτα (these). ⁶⁶ καὶ (And) ἔθεντο (laid them up) πάντες (all) οἱ (those) ἀκούσαντες (having heard), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) αὐτῶν (of them), λέγοντες (saying), “Τί (What) ἄρα (then) τὸ (the) παιδίον (child) τοῦτο (this) ἔσται (will be)?” καὶ (And) γὰρ (for) χεὶρ (the hand) Κυρίου (of the Lord) ἦν (was) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him). ⁶⁷ Καὶ (And) Ζαχαρίας (Zechariah), ὁ (the) πατὴρ (father) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἐπλήσθη (was filled) Πνεύματος (with the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy), καὶ (and) ἐπροφήτευσεν (prophesied), λέγων (saying), ⁶⁸ “Εὐλογητὸς (Blessed be) Κύριος (the Lord) ὁ (the) Θεὸς (God) τοῦ (-) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel), ὅτι (because) ἐπεσκέψατο (He has visited) καὶ (and) ἐποίησεν (has performed) λύτρωσιν (redemption) τῷ (on the) λαῷ (people) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ⁶⁹ καὶ (and) ἤγειρεν (has raised up) κέρας (a horn) σωτηρίας (of salvation) ἡμῖν (for us), ἐν (in) οἴκῳ (the house) Δαυὶδ (of David) παιδὸς (of the servant) αὐτοῦ (of Him); ⁷⁰ καθὼς (as) ἐλάλησεν (He spoke) διὰ (by) στόματος (the mouth) τῶν (of the) ἁγίων (holy) ἀπ’ (of) αἰῶνος (old) προφητῶν (prophets) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ⁷¹ σωτηρίαν (salvation) ἐξ (from) ἐχθρῶν (the enemies) ἡμῶν (of us), καὶ (and) ἐκ (from) χειρὸς (the hand) πάντων (of all) τῶν (those) μισούντων (hating) ἡμᾶς (us); ⁷² ποιῆσαι (to fulfill) ἔλεος (mercy) μετὰ (toward) τῶν (the) πατέρων (fathers) ἡμῶν (of us), καὶ (and) μνησθῆναι (to remember) διαθήκης (the covenant) ἁγίας (holy) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ⁷³ ὅρκον (the oath) ὃν (that) ὤμοσεν (He swore) πρὸς (to) Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham), τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) ἡμῶν (of us), τοῦ (-) δοῦναι (to grant) ἡμῖν (us), ⁷⁴ ἀφόβως (without fear), ἐκ (from) χειρὸς (the hand) ἐχθρῶν (of our enemies) ῥυσθέντας (having been saved), λατρεύειν (to serve) αὐτῷ (Him), ⁷⁵ ἐν (in) ὁσιότητι (holiness) καὶ (and) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) ἐνώπιον (before) αὐτοῦ (Him), πάσαις (all) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) ἡμῶν (of our life). ⁷⁶ Καὶ (And) σὺ (you) δέ (now), παιδίον (child), προφήτης (prophet) Ὑψίστου (of the Most High) κληθήσῃ (will be called); προπορεύσῃ (you will go) γὰρ (for) ἐνώπιον (before) Κυρίου (the Lord), ἑτοιμάσαι (to prepare) ὁδοὺς (ways) αὐτοῦ (of Him); ⁷⁷ τοῦ (-) δοῦναι (to give) γνῶσιν (knowledge) σωτηρίας (of salvation) τῷ (to) λαῷ (people) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἐν (in) ἀφέσει (forgiveness) ἁμαρτιῶν (of the sins) αὐτῶν (of them), ⁷⁸ διὰ (through) σπλάγχνα (the affections) ἐλέους (of compassion) Θεοῦ (of God) ἡμῶν (of us), ἐν (in) οἷς (which) ἐπισκέψεται (will visit) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀνατολὴ (the Sunrise) ἐξ (from) ὕψους (on high), ⁷⁹ ἐπιφᾶναι (to shine upon) τοῖς (those) ἐν (in) σκότει (darkness) καὶ (and) σκιᾷ (in the shadow) θανάτου (of death) καθημένοις (sitting); τοῦ (-) κατευθῦναι (to direct) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) ἡμῶν (of us) εἰς (into) ὁδὸν (the way) εἰρήνης (of peace).” ⁸⁰ Τὸ (-) δὲ (And) παιδίον (the child) ηὔξανεν (continued to grow) καὶ (and) ἐκραταιοῦτο (was strengthened) πνεύματι (in spirit); καὶ (and) ἦν (he was) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἐρήμοις (deserted places) ἕως (until) ἡμέρας (the day) ἀναδείξεως (of appearance) αὐτοῦ (of him) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Ἰσραήλ (Israel).
