יַּעֲקב₃₄₄, יַעֲקוֺב₅ proper name, masculine and of a people Jacob, Ιακωβ, son of Isaac and Rebekah, father of tribes of Israel (explanation from עָקֵב heel Gen 25:26; Hos 12:4 i.e. supplanter; compare with עָקַב overreach Gen 27:36 one closely following according to Lag^{BN 127}; connection with Palestinian city (?) called in Egyptian Y±kb'ara (i.e. יַעֲקֹבאֵֿל) is obscure; compare Mey^{ZAW vi.1 ff.} WMM^{As.u.Eur.162 ff.} Jen^{ZA x}(1895-6), 347 ff.; see also Babylonian proper name, masculine Ya±‡ubilu, Pinches in Hom^{AHT 61, 96, 112}; hence OT יַעֲקֹב perhaps originally יעקבקל or the like. compare Palmyrene proper name בלעקב, עתעקב); — יַעֲקוֺב Jer 30:18 + 3 t.
