¹ Forasmuch as many have undertaken to compose a narrative of the facts which have been fully confirmed among us,

³¹ But these are written, that ye may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing ye may have life thro' his name.

¹ The former treatise have I composed, O Theophilus, of all things which Jesus began both to do and to teach, ² Until the day he was taken up, after having thro' the Holy Ghost given commandment to the apostles, whom he had chosen: ³ To whom also he presented himself alive after his passion, by many infallible proofs, being seen by them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.

¹⁶ The mystery of godliness is the pillar and ground of the truth, and without controversy a great thing: God was manifested in the flesh, was justified by the spirit, seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed on in the world, taken up into glory.

¹⁷ But the Lord stood by me, and strengthened me, that through me the preaching might be fully known, even that all nations might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.

¹⁶ For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eye-witnesses of his majesty. ¹⁷ For he received honour and glory from God the Father, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I delight. ¹⁸ And we being with him in the holy mountain, heard this voice coming from heaven: ¹⁹ And we have the word of prophecy more confirmed, to which ye do well that ye take heed, as to a lamp that shone in a dark place, till the day should dawn, and the day-star arise in your hearts:
