2 and said to his servants, This is John the Baptist; he hath risen from the dead, and therefore do these powers work in him. 3 For Herod had seized John, and bound him, and put him in prison, on account of Herodias, his brother Philips wife. 4 For John said to him, It is not lawful for thee to have her. 5 And wishing to put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they regarded him as a prophet. 6 But when Herods birthday was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod; 7 whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatever she might ask. 8 And she, being set on by her mother, saith, Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist. 9 And the king was sorry; but on account of his oaths, and of those at table with him, he ordered it to be given, 10 and sent and beheaded John in the prison. 11 And his head was brought on a platter, and given to the damsel; and she brought it to her mother. 12 And his disciples came and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus. 13 When Jesus heard of it, he withdrew thence in a boat into a desert place apart; and the multitudes hearing of it followed him on foot from the cities. 14 And when he came forth he saw a great multitude; and he was moved with compassion for them, and healed their sick.

Matthew 21:25-27

25 The baptism of John, whence was it? From heaven, or from men? And they reasoned among themselves, saying, If we say, From heaven, he will say to us, Why then did ye not believe him? 26 But if we say, From men, we fear the multitude; for all regard John as a prophet. 27 And they answered Jesus and said, We do not know. And he said to them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

Mark 6:16-29

16 But Herod hearing of it said, John, whom I beheaded, hath risen again. 17 For Herod himself had sent forth and seized John, and bound him in prison, on account of Herodias, his brother Philips wife; for he had married her. 18 For John had said to Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brothers wife. 19 And Herodias was enraged against him, and wished to put him to death, but could not. 20 For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and was regardful of him; and on hearing him, was in much anxiety, and listened to him gladly. 21 And a convenient day having come, when Herod on his birthday made a supper for his nobles and chief captains and the principal men of Galilee, 22 and the daughter of Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and those at table with him; and the king said to the damsel, Ask of me whatever thou wilt, and I will give it thee. 23 And he swore to her, Whatever thou shalt ask of me, I will give thee, to the half of my kingdom. 24 And she went out and said to her mother, What shall I ask? And she said, The head of John the Baptizer. 25 And she came in immediately with haste to the king, and asked, saying, I desire that thou wilt give me immediately on a platter the head of John the Baptist. 26 And the king was exceedingly sorry; but on account of his oaths, and of those at table with him, he would not refuse her. 27 And the king immediately sent one of his guards, and ordered his head to be brought. And he went and beheaded him in the prison, 28 and brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the damsel; and the damsel gave it to her mother. 29 And his disciples, when they heard of it, came and took up his body, and laid it in a tomb.

13 But the angel said to him, Fear not, Zachariah; for thy prayer was heard, and thy wife Elizabeth shall bear thee a son; and thou shalt call his name John. 14 And thou wilt have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice for his birth. 15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; and will drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit from his very birth. 16 And many of the sons of Israel will he turn to the Lord their God. 17 And he will go before his face in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers to children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, to make ready for the Lord a prepared people.

Luke 1:76

76 And thou, child, shalt be called a prophet of the Most High; for thou shalt go in advance before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways,

Luke 3:1-20

1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, 2 when Annas and Caiaphas were highpriests, the word of God came to John, the son of Zachariah, in the wilderness. 3 And he came into all the country about the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; 4 as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths! 5 Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low; and the crooked places shall be made straight, and the rough ways smooth; 6 and all flesh shall see the salvation of God." 7 He said therefore to the multitudes that came forth to be baptized by him, Brood of vipers, who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance; and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; for I say to you, that God is able out of these stones to raise up children to Abraham. 9 And already also is the axe lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that beareth not good fruit is to be cut down, and cast into the fire. 10 And the multitudes asked him, saying, What then must we do? 11 He answered and said to them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath food, let him do likewise. 12 And there came also publicans to be baptized, and said to him, Teacher, what must we do? 13 And he said to them, Exact no more than hath been ordered you. 14 And soldiers also asked him, saying, And what must we do? And he said to them, Do violence to no one, accuse no one falsely, and be content with your wages. 15 And while the people were in expectation, and all were considering in their hearts concerning John, whether he were the Christ, 16 John answered and said to them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but he who is mightier than I is coming, the latchet of whose sandals I am not worthy to loose; he will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire. 17 His winnowingshovel is in his hand to thoroughly cleanse his threshingfloor, and gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire. 18 And giving many other exhortations he published the glad tidings to the people. 19 But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him on account of Herodias the wife of his brother, and on account of all the evil deeds which Herod had done, 20 added this also to them all, that he shut up John in prison.

Luke 7:24

24 And when the messengers of John had departed, he began to say to the multitudes concerning John, What have ye gone out into the wilderness to see? the reeds shaken by the wind?

John 1:6-8

6 There was a man, sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to bear witness of the light, that through him all might believe. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness of the light.

John 1:15-36

15 John beareth witness of him, and crieth, saying, This was he of whom I said, He that cometh after me hath gone before me; for he was before me. 16 For out of his fullness have we all received, and grace upon grace. 17 For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one hath ever seen God; the only begotten God, who is in the bosom of the Father, he hath made him known. 19 And this is the witness of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem, to ask him, Who art thou? 20 And he declared, and did not deny; and he declared, I am not the Christ. 21 And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elijah? And he said, I am not. Art thou the prophet? And he answered, No. 22 They said therefore to him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to those who sent us; what sayest thou of thyself? 23 He said, I am "a voice of one crying aloud in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord," as said Isaiah the prophet. 24 And they were sent from the Pharisees; 25 and they asked him and said to him, Why then dost thou baptize, if thou art not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet? 26 John answered them, saying, I baptize in water. There standeth one among you whom ye know not, 27 he who cometh after me, the latchet of whose sandal I am not worthy to loose. 28 These things took place in Bethany beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. 29 The next day he seeth Jesus coming to him, and saith, Behold, the Lamb of God, who taketh away the sin of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man, who hath gone before me; for he was before me. 31 And I knew him not; but that he might be made manifest to Israel, therefore I came baptizing in water. 32 And John bore witness, saying, I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove from heaven, and it abode upon him. 33 And I knew him not; but he who sent me to baptize in water, the same said to me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and abiding on him, he it is that baptizeth in the Holy Spirit. 34 And I have seen and have borne witness, that this is the Son of God. 35 On the morrow John was again standing, and two of his disciples; 36 and looking upon Jesus as he was walking, he saith, Behold, the Lamb of God!

John 3:27-36

27 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, unless it be given him from heaven. 28 Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I was sent before that man. 29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegrooms voice. This my joy then hath become full. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease. 31 He that cometh from above is above all. He that is from the earth is earthly, and speaketh earthly things; he that cometh from heaven 32 testifieth what he hath seen and heard; and no one receiveth his testimony. 33 He that hath received his testimony hath set his seal that God is true. 34 For he whom God sent speaketh the words of God; for he giveth not the Spirit by measure. 35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. 36 He that believeth in the Son hath everlasting life; and he that disobeyeth the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.

24 before whose coming forward John had first preached a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. 25 And as John was finishing his course, he said, Who do ye think that I am? I am not He. But lo I there cometh after me one, the sandal of whose feet I am not worthy to loose.

Acts 19:3-4

3 And he said, Into what then were ye baptized? And they said, Into Johns baptism. 4 Then said Paul, John indeed baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people, that they should believe on him that was coming after him; that is, on Jesus.
